- Abstract
This book presents the latest development of fibre/ceramic-polymer composites for biocompatible applications, with a special emphasis on the effect of different types of fibre and ceramic fillers on the characteristics of the composites. The book contains chapters that cover fundamentals, materials used for composites, fabrication, classification, and biomedical applications. The first section of the book provides a brief overview of the fibre and ceramic-based composite materials while the subsequent sections cover the numerous types of fibre and ceramic polymeric composites with emphasis on their potential biomedical applications. Increasingly sophisticated biomedical technologies, such as tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, as well as genetic therapies and controlled drug delivery, are being developed at a breakneck pace, necessitating the development of new materials to meet the specific requirements of these fields. Single-component ceramic or polymer materials that are now available do not meet their requirements. Therefore, composites and hybrid composites have an important role to play. Aside from that, to completely meet the fundamental criteria such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, and acceptable mechanical qualities, it is necessary to find materials that can perform a variety of advanced activities at the same time. This book is a road map not only for the materials scientist but also for researchers, academics, technologists, and students working in composites for biomedical engineering applications.

- Abstract
This book discusses the different skin grafting methods, latest trends in graft designing, and its relationship with the burn injuries. An introduction to several conventional and modern skin grafting methods and how crucial the innovation is for recovery of large burns will be presented. The technologies involved in the development of skin grafts incisions, and study of their effect on the mechanical properties and systematically modified skin graft patterns, will be covered at length. The development of skin grafts using conventional, auxetic, and hierarchical patterns through computational and experimental frameworks will be discussed in detail. Also, the role of skin graft patterns on the mechanical stresses, expansion ratio or meshing ratio, will be presented. Additionally, the role of degree of burn, size of burn, and region of burn will be discussed, and its generalizability will be covered in detail. Finally, the challenges with the existing skin graft meshers and latest development in this niche area will be highlighted. This book is anticipated to serve as a key reference for medical and research professionals working in the skin grafting domain as well as the product manufacturing industries. For example, skin grafting plays an important role to cure the serious burn injuries. Current innovative skin graft patterns which cover higher area compared to traditional skin graft patterns are anticipated to help in surgery and faster recovery of larger burnt areas. Also, the current skin graft mesher, which is used to develop traditional skin grafts, cannot produce claimed expansions clinically. This book helps design novel mesher devices to reduce the difference between actual and claimed expansions clinically and increase the skin graft coverage area to recover burn sites with lesser available skin. This book is equally useful for students of medical practices, manufacturing engineering, and design engineering.

- Abstract
This book presents a revised and modern vision of cyclic steam stimulation (CSS) processes to the industry and academic community linked to hydrocarbon production, particularly to the technical community related to heavy oil thermal recovery processes. The linking of geomechanical concepts in optimizing productivity and managing these assets is offered. In general, heavy oil-producing reservoirs around the world have high values of permeability prevailing in the geological formations, which has led to not considering their reduction in productivity during the aggressive processes of CSS due to the drastic changes of temperature and pressure that consequently promote essential changes in in-situ stresses, as well as permanent changes in porosity and permeability. In this sense, the analysis of the behavior of the productivity of heavy oil reservoirs when considering the geomechanical effects offers a more realistic playing field to promote productivity optimization processes. These reservoirs are generally made up of poorly consolidated and uncemented formations that, due to the limiting elements of the in-situ conditions as well as the operational variables, promote optimal operating ranges to reduce the effects of loss of permeability in the production of these resources. Therefore, this publication aims to collect and present the geomechanical phenomena associated with the thermal recovery operation with CSS, mainly the affectation of the permeability of the reservoirs that are exploited under this technique. Likewise, it proposes a CSS management strategy that uses the thermal impact on the porous medium in favor of the reservoir's productivity. The scope is to provide a link between reservoir engineering and economic optimization by using sensible permeability models and stress paths to better forecast oil production. To achieve a comprehensive methodology, laboratory testing, simulation, and theoretical developments are presented, bringing the reader a complete view of the phenomena. The audience will find a comprehensive methodological development related to reservoir management and setting a strategy to optimize wells in CSS. These theoretical tools are widely appreciated since they offer a systematic view and solution.

- Abstract
In contrast to metals, a composite material acquires an internal structure where the imprint of its manufacturing process history is a significant part of the internal structure's makeup and in many cases determines how the material responds to external impulses. The performance for which a composite material is designed must therefore be assessed with due consideration to the manufacturing-induced features in the material volume. Failure theories based on homogenized composites cannot deliver reliable methodologies for performance assessment. This book details approaches that depart from traditional treatments by accounting for manufacturing defects in composite materials. It discusses how manufacturing defects are produced and how they affect the performance of composite materials. Serves as the only book to bring knowledge on manufacturing and failure modeling together in a coherent manner. Guides readers on mechanisms-based modeling with a focus on defects. Treats statistical simulation of microstructure with defects aimed at physical modeling. Covers manufacturing methods for polymer matrix composites. Describes failure modes in unidirectional composites and laminates in the presence of defects. Discusses fatigue damage in the presence of defects. This book is aimed at researchers in industry and academia in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, and materials science and engineering. It also serves as a reference for students taking advanced courses in composite materials.

- Abstract
This book discusses the environmental hazards in the Gulf countries (GCC). The publication of this book is of great importance to all those interested and knowledgeable in the field. Climate change leads to the occurrence of major environmental hazards that must be reduced by estimating the extent of climate change and developing appropriate solutions to mitigate those effects. Climate changes are produced indirectly as a result of human activities with uncalculated consequences. The process of climate change is always accompanied by catastrophic environmental problems such as global warming, high temperatures, storms, hurricanes, floods, desertification processes, air pollution, and the extinction of many types and forms of animals and plants. The Gulf countries are located in the eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula where the crude oil is extracted in several fields. The states suffer from many environmental problems as a result of its geographical location, global climate change, and also from oil extraction operations. The problems include high temperatures, induced earthquakes, and pollution in the soil and marine coast, as well as desertification processes, sand dunes movement, and other environmental problems. Earthquakes are also recorded from and near the oil fields, indicating the link between the oil extraction process and the occurrence of earthquakes. Indeed, the environmental studies published in the Gulf state are very few and do not meet the need of the scientific community in region which need more important environmental publications that help in the great and rapid urban developments in the area.

This book includes peer-reviewed articles from the Third World Conference on Floating Solutions WCFS 2023 Japan with an aim to pioneer the SDGs and Next SDGs by making the most use of oceans and water. In recent years, the safety and security of people's lives around the world have been threatened by frequent floods and rising sea levels attributable to climate change. The COP 26 has set a common global goal of limiting the temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. It is an urgent task to cope with climate change as well as to utilize decarbonized and renewable energy. The UN is promoting the SDGs which aim to achieve 17 Goals between 2015 and 2030. However, efforts to reach the Goals will not end in 2030 but will be an ongoing challenge for humanity beyond 2030. Here, we tentatively call the Goals to be achieved after the SDGs as'Next SDGs.'Ocean and water have the potential to provide solutions to the disasters such as flooding and sea level rise due to climate change. In this context, WCFS 2023 presents ocean and water as the urban infrastructure and explores new technology and feasible solutions. In particular, it is necessary to consider urban planning, marine architecture, port planning connecting land and sea, disaster prevention, renewable energy, and food production on the sea and water. Further, it is indispensable that knowledge, experience, dream, and strong desire to realize these challenges are supported by a diversity of people.
