This thesis presents a series of experimental techniques based on scanning probe microscopy, which make it possible access the degree of freedom of protons both in real and energy space. These novel techniques and methods allow direct visualization of the concerted quantum tunneling of protons within the hydrogen-bonded network and quantification of the quantum component of a single hydrogen bond at a water–solid interface for the first time. Furthermore, the thesis demonstrates that the anharmonic quantum fluctuations of hydrogen nuclei further weaken the weak hydrogen bonds and strengthen the strong ones. However, this trend was reversed when the hydrogen bond coupled to the local environment. These pioneering findings substantially advance our understanding of the quantum nature of H bonds at the molecular level.

The aim of this book is to present the theory of image and contrast formation and the analytical modes in transmission electron microscopy. The principles of particle and wave optics of electrons are described. Electron-specimen interactions are discussed for evaluating the theory of scattering and phase contrast. Also discussed are the kinematical and dynamical theories of electron diffraction and their applications for crystal structure determination and imaging of lattice defects. X-ray microanalysis and energy-loss spectroscopy are treated as analytical methods. The characterisation of materials and material systems is an essential aspect of materials science. A few decades ago it became obvious that, because the properties of materials depend so critically on the microstructure of their components, this characterisation must be determined to the atomic level. This means that the position - as well as the nature - of individual atoms has to be determined at'critical'regions close to defects such as dislocations, interfaces, and surfaces. The great impact of advanced transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques became apparent in the area of semiconducting materials, where the nature of internal interfaces between silicon and the corresponding silicides could be identified, and the results used to enhance the understanding of the properties of the compounds studied. At that time, advanced TEM techniques existed predominantly in the US. However, advanced TEM instrumentation was not available in the ma­ terials science and solid-state science communities in Germany. This gap was bridged by the late Peter Haasen who, after a visit to the US, initiated a Priority Programme on Microstructural Characterisation at the Volkswagen Foundation (Hannover). The programme was in effect from 1985 to 1997 and supported a wide range of research projects - from fundamental, trendy, innovative projects to projects in applied materials science.

Any book that covers a large variety of subjects and is written by one author lacks by necessity the depth provided by an expert in his or her own field of specialization. This book is no exception. It has been written with the encouragement of my students and colleagues, who felt that an extensive card file I had accumulated over the years of teaching solid state and semiconductor physics would be helpful to more than just a few of us. This file, updated from time to time, contained lecture notes and other entries that were useful in my research and permitted me to give to my students a broader spectrum of information than is available in typical textbooks. When assembling this material into a book, I divided the top­ ics into material dealing with the homogeneous semiconductor, the subject of the previously published Volume 1, and the inhomoge­ neous semiconductor, the subject of this Volume 2. In order to keep the book to a manageable size, sections of tutorial character which can be used as text for a graduate level class had to be interwoven with others written in shorter, reference style. The pointers at the right-hand page header will assist in distinguishing the more diffi­ cult reference parts of the book (with the pointer to the right) from the more easy-to-read basic educational sections (with the pointer tending to the left).

This volume contains review articles written by the invited speakers at the ninth International Summer Institute in Surface Science (ISISS 1989), held at the Uni­ versity of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in August of 1989. During the last five years transmission electron microscopy (TEM) has added numerous important new data to mineralogy and has considerably changed its outlook. This is partly due to the fact that metallurgists and crystal physicists­ having solved most of the structural and crystallographic problems in metals­ have begun to show a widening interest in the much more complicated structures of minerals, and partly to recent progress in experimental techniques, mainly the availability of ion-thinning devices. While electron microscopists have become increasingly interested in minerals (judging from special symposia at recent meetings such as Fifth European Congress on Electron microscopy, Man­ chester 1972; Eight International Congress on Electron Microscopy, Canberra 1974) mineralogists have realized advantages of the new technique and applied it with increasing frequency. In an effort to coordinate the growing quantity of research, electron microscopy sessions have been included in meetings of mineralogists (e. g. Geological Society of America, Minneapolis, 1972, American Crystallographic Association, Berkeley, 1974). The tremendous response for the TEM symposium which H. -R. Wenk and G. Thomas organized at the Berkeley Conference of the American Crystallographic Association formed the basis for this book. It appeared useful at this stage to summarize the achievements of electron microscopy, scattered in many different journals in several different fields and present them to mineralogists. A group of participants as the Berkeley symposium formed an Editorial Committee and outlined the content of this book.

This 18th volume of the series includes invited papers from the Seventh All-Union Conference on the Growth of Crystals and the Symposium on Molecular-Beam Epitaxy that were held in Moscow in November, 1988. In choosing papers, the Program Committee of the conference gave priority to studies in rapidly emerging areas of the growth and preparation of crystalS and crystalline films. The qualifications of the authors were also consid­ ered. This ensured that the material was of a high standard and that the problems discussed covered a wide range. These examine problems applicable to various crystallization media: instability of the crystallization front (for a more general case than before and for a comparatively complicated system, a solution), adsorption and migration of atoms and molecules (the analysis is made on a quantum-chemical level), and the kinetics of step and dislocation growth in the presence of surface anisotropy as well as impurity adsorption (several earlier known methods are summarized). Modern materials science and biophysics has increasingly focused on studying and controlling intermolecular interactions on the single-molecule level. The peer-reviewed literature contains an increasing number of studies that either measure the interaction forces directly or use mechanical forces to deform the molecules or trigger structural transitions. Molecular force spectroscopy is the result of unprecedented advances in the capabilities of modern force measurement instruments in the past decade and describes a number of techniques that use mechanical force measurements to study interactions between single molecules and molecular assemblies in chemical and biological systems. Examples of these techniques include atomic force microscopy, optical tweezers, surface forces apparatus, and magnetic tweezers.
