This book gathers contributions on various aspects of the theory and applications of linear and nonlinear waves and associated phenomena, as well as approaches developed in a global partnership of researchers with the national Centre of Excellence in Nonlinear Studies (CENS) at the Department of Cybernetics of Tallinn University of Technology in Estonia.The papers chiefly focus on the role of mathematics in the analysis of wave phenomena. They highlight the complexity of related topics concerning wave generation, propagation, transformation and impact in solids, gases, fluids and human tissues, while also sharing insights into selected mathematical methods for the analytical and numerical treatment of complex phenomena. In addition, the contributions derive advanced mathematical models, share innovative ideas on computing, and present novel applications for a number of research fields where both linear and nonlinear wave problems play an important role.The papers are written in a tutorial style, intended for non-specialist researchers and students. The authors first describe the basics of a problem that is currently of interest in the scientific community, discuss the state of the art in related research, and then share their own experiences in tackling the problem.Each chapter highlights the importance of applied mathematics for central issues in the study of waves and associated complex phenomena in different media. The topics range from basic principles of wave mechanics up to the mathematics of Planet Earth in the broadest sense, including contemporary challenges in the mathematics of society. In turn, the areas of application range from classic ocean wave mathematics to material science, and to human nerves and tissues. All contributions describe the approaches in a straightforward manner, making them ideal material for educational purposes, e.g. for courses, master class lectures, or seminar presentations.

Mathematical modelling and computer simulations are playing a crucial role in the solution of the complex problems arising in the field of biomedical sciences and provide a support to clinical and experimental practices in an interdisciplinary framework.Indeed, the development of mathematical models and efficient numerical simulation tools is of key importance when dealing with such applications.Moreover, since the parameters in biomedical models have peculiar scientific interpretations and their values are often unknown, accurate estimation techniques need to be developed for parameter identification against the measured data of observed phenomena. In the light of the new challenges brought by the biomedical applications, computational mathematics paves the way for the validation of the mathematical models and the investigation of control problems.The volume hosts high-quality selected contributions containing original research results as well as comprehensive papers and survey articles including prospective discussion focusing on some topical biomedical problems. This book discusses the modern theory of Laplace eigenfunctions through the lens of a new tool called geodesic beams. The authors provide a brief introduction to the theory of Laplace eigenfunctions followed by an accessible treatment of geodesic beams and their applications to sup norm estimates, L^p estimates, averages, and Weyl laws. Geodesic beams have proven to be a valuable tool in the study of Laplace eigenfunctions, but their treatment is currently spread through a variety of rather technical papers. The authors present a treatment of these tools that is accessible to a wider audience of mathematicians. Every two years the members of GIRET (= Centre for International Re­ search on Economic Tendency Surveys) meet at conferences in order to promote the scientific discussion and to encourage the exchange of ideas. CIRET is an international study group for research in the field of business cycle surveys. CIRET was founded in 1960 and has at present about 350 full and corresponding members in 35 different coun­ tries. The members either carry out business, investment or consumer 1 surveys or are working on a practical or methodological level with the results of such surveys. The most important topics of the GIRET conferences are the predictive value of survey data as trade cycle indicators, the utilization of qualitative data in econometric models, forecasts of capital expenditures based on plans of private companies, the usefulness of consumer surveys for trade cycle analyses. In September 1977 the 13th CIRET Conference took place in Munich. On the occasion of the three-day conference 27 papers were presented.

Cooperation is pervasive throughout nature, but its origin remains an open question. For decades, social scientists, business leaders, and economists have struggled with an important question: why is cooperation so ubiquitous among unrelated humans? The answers would have profound effects because anything that promotes cooperation leads to more productive work environments and benefits society at large. Game theory provides an ideal framework for studying social dilemmas, or those situations in which people decide whether to cooperate with others (benefitting the group) or defect by prioritizing their self-interest (benefitting only the individual). The social dilemma is formulated as a mathematical game and then programmed into a computer model. Simulating the game allows researchers to investigate potential theories to explain how cooperation emerges and what promotes its persistence. Over the past 25 years, countless papers on social dilemma games have been published, yet arguably little progress has been made. The problem is the social dilemma game models are unrealistic in the sense they contain artificial constructs that deviate from the way humans act. This book describes the shortcomings in current social dilemma game modeling techniques and provides guidance on designing more effective models. A basic introduction to game theory is provided with an emphasis on the prisoner's dilemma, the most widely studied social dilemma game. Individual chapters are provided detailing the shortcomings of weak selection, spatial games, and the Moran process. Computer model validation is also discussed at length. The recommendations found in this book should help design more realistic social dilemma game models likely to produce a better understanding of human cooperation.

This volume is an effort to bring together important contributions to the mathe­ matical development of demography and to suggest briefly their historical context. We have tried to find who first thought of the several concepts and devices commonly used by demographers, what sort of problem he was facing to which the device or concept seemed the solution, and how his invention developed subsequently in the hands of others. Historically, the book starts with a Roman table of life expectancies from the third century a. d. about which we know little, and with John Graunt's explora­ tions in an area that was still popularly suspect when he wrote in 1662. These are followed by the astronomer Halley, who looked into the field long enough to invent the life table and to notice that Their Majesties would take a sizeable loss on the annuity scheme they had just launched; and by Euler, who was first to devise the formulas of stable population theory and to apply them to filling gaps in data To these we add the handful of further contributions in the 19th century and many pieces from the explosion of contributions that began in this century with Lotka. We doubt that we have managed to trace everything back to its ultimate beginning, and suspect that our nominees in some cases have been anticipated by predecessors who will be turned up by other students.

This volume, published jointly with the Association for Computing Machinery, comprises a collection of research articles celebrating the occasion of Victor Klee's sixty-fifth birthday in September 1990. During his long career, Klee has made contributions to a wide variety of areas, such as discrete and computational geometry, convexity, combinatorics, graph theory, functional analysis, mathematical programming and optimization, and theoretical computer science. In addition, Klee made important contributions to mathematics education, mathematical methods in economics and the decision sciences, applications of discrete mathematics in the biological and social sciences, and the transfer of knowledge from applied mathematics to industry. In honor of Klee's achievements, this volume presents more than forty papers on topics related to Klee's research. While the majority of the papers are research articles, a number of survey articles are also included. Mirroring the breadth of Klee's mathematical contributions, this book shows how different branches of mathematics interact. It is a fitting tribute to one of the foremost leaders in discrete mathematics.

This book reviews math topics relevant to non-mathematics students and scientists, but which they may not have seen or studied for a while. The organizers of the conference Contemporary Mathematics in Kielce 2020 warmly welcome all the mathematicians interested in that field to participate in our meeting. The conference is hosted by the Jan Kochanowski University in Kielce, Poland, and takes place in the period from February 24-27, 2021, and will be held ONLINE, on the MS Teams platform. Our conference is held under the patronage of the President of the Jan Kochanowski University in Kielce. The main purpose of the conference is to stimulate the exchange of new ideas in algebra, topology and geometry, and to celebrate 50 years of the Jan Kochanowski University. On the occasion of the jubilee, we plan to remember the brightest moments of mathematical research and education in Kielce. The conference will be divided into two parts - the anniversary and the scientific. The first one gives the opportunity to meet many of the former and the current employees of our Institute. The second, provides the space for scientific discussions in thematic sessions, that will be Topology & Algebra, Analysis, Geometry and Didactics. This book contains eleven original and survey scientific research articles arose from presentations given by invited speakers at International Workshop on Image Processing and Inverse Problems, held in Beijing Computational Science Research Center, Beijing, China, April 21–24, 2018. The book was dedicated to Professor Raymond Chan on the occasion of his 60th birthday.The contents of the book cover topics including image reconstruction, image segmentation, image registration, inverse problems and so on. Deep learning, PDE, statistical theory based research methods and techniques were discussed. The state-of-the-art developments on mathematical analysis, advanced modeling, efficient algorithm and applications were presented. The collected papers in this book also give new research trends in deep learning and optimization for imaging science. It should be a good reference for researchers working on related problems, as well as for researchers working on computer vision and visualization, inverse problems, image processing and medical imaging.

This book contains some of the results presented at the mini-symposium titled Emerging Problems in the Homogenization of Partial Differential Equations, held during the ICIAM2019 conference in Valencia in July 2019. The papers cover a large range of topics, problems with weak regularity data involving renormalized solutions, eigenvalue problems for complicated shapes of the domain, homogenization of partial differential problems with strongly alternating boundary conditions of Robin type with large parameters, multiscale analysis of the potential action along a neuron with a myelinated axon, and multi-scale model of magnetorheological suspensions. The present volume contains selected papers issued from the sixth edition of the International Conference'Numerical methods for hyperbolic problems'that took place in 2019 in Málaga (Spain). NumHyp conferences, which began in 2009, focus on recent developments and new directions in the field of numerical methods for hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs) and their applications. This proceedings volume gathers a selection of outstanding research papers presented at the third Conference on Isogeometric Analysis and Applications, held in Delft, The Netherlands, in April 2018. This conference series, previously held in Linz, Austria, in 2012 and Annweiler am Trifels, Germany, in 2014, has created an international forum for interaction between scientists and practitioners working in this rapidly developing field. Isogeometric analysis is a groundbreaking computational approach that aims to bridge the gap between numerical analysis and computational geometry modeling by integrating the finite element method and related numerical simulation techniques into the computer-aided design workflow, and vice versa. Although she was famous as the'mother of modern algebra,'Emmy Noether's life and work have never been the subject of an authoritative scientific biography. Emmy Noether – Mathematician Extraordinaire represents the most comprehensive study of this singularly important mathematician to date. Focusing on key turning points, it aims to provide an overall interpretation of Noether's intellectual development while offering a new assessment of her role in transforming the mathematics of the twentieth century.Hermann Weyl, her colleague before both fled to the United States in 1933, fully recognized that Noether's dynamic school was the very heart and soul of the famous Göttingen community. Beyond her immediate circle of students, Emmy Noether's lectures and seminars drew talented mathematicians from all over the world. Four of the most important were B.L. van der Waerden, Pavel Alexandrov, Helmut Hasse, and Olga Taussky. Noether's classic papers on ideal theory inspiredvan der Waerden to recast his research in algebraic geometry. Her lectures on group theory motivated Alexandrov to develop links between point set topology and combinatorial methods. Noether's vision for a new approach to algebraic number theory gave Hasse the impetus to pursue a line of research that led to the Brauer–Hasse–Noether Theorem, whereas her abstract style clashed with Taussky's approach to classical class field theory during a difficult time when both were trying to find their footing in a foreign country.Although similar to Proving It Her Way: Emmy Noether, a Life in Mathematics, this lengthier study addresses mathematically minded readers. Thus, it presents a detailed analysis of Emmy Noether's work with Hilbert and Klein on mathematical problems connected with Einstein's theory of relativity. These efforts culminated with her famous paper'Invariant Variational Problems,'published one year before she joined the Göttingen faculty in 1919.

Marking 94 years since its first appearance, this book provides an annotated translation of Sainte-Laguë's seminal monograph Les réseaux (ou graphes), drawing attention to its fundamental principles and ideas. Sainte-Laguë's 1926 monograph appeared only in French, but in the 1990s H. Gropp published a number of English papers describing several aspects of the book. He expressed his hope that an English translation might sometime be available to the mathematics community. In the 10 years following the appearance of Les réseaux (ou graphes), the development of graph theory continued, culminating in the publication of the first full book on the theory of finite and infinite graphs in 1936 by Dénes König. This remained the only well-known text until Claude Berge's 1958 book on the theory and applications of graphs. By 1960, graph theory had emerged as a significant mathematical discipline of its own. This book will be of interest to graph theoristsand mathematical historians.

This book highlights the mathematical depth and sophistication of techniques used in different areas of robotics. Each chapter is a peer-reviewed version of a paper presented during the 2021 IMA Conference on the Mathematics of Robotics, held online September 8–10, 2021. The conference gave a platform to researchers with fundamental contributions and for academic and to share new ideas. The book illustrates some of the current interest in advanced mathematics and robotics such as algebraic geometry, tropical geometry, monodromy and homotopy continuation methods applied to areas such as kinematics, path planning, swam robotics, dynamics and control. It is hoped that the conference and this publications will stimulate further related mathematical research in robotics.

This book includes the joint proceedings of the International Conference on Particle Systems and PDEs VI, VII and VIII. Particle Systems and PDEs VI was held in Nice, France, in November/December 2017, Particle Systems and PDEs VII was held in Palermo, Italy, in November 2018, and Particle Systems and PDEs VIII was held in Lisbon, Portugal, in December 2019. Most of the papers are dealing with mathematical problems motivated by different applications in physics, engineering, economics, chemistry and biology. This book fills an important gap in studies on D. D. Kosambi. For the first time, the mathematical work of Kosambi is described, collected and presented in a manner that is accessible to non-mathematicians as well.
