Moreover, the underreporting of occupational accidents, injuries and fatalities is giving a false picture of the real scope of the problem. It is possible to say that many disciplines, from law to psychology, from engineering to basic sciences, from geography to history, from social sciences to health sciences, have become sub-disciplines that directly affect this phenomenon. Occupational safety and health, which needs a multi- disciplinary scientific approach, is based on “keeping the health of workers safe and protected”. Seit den 90er Jahren sorgt der ökonomische Wandel im Arbeitsleben für fortschreitende Rationalisierungsbemühungen auf wirtschaftlicher und personeller Ebene. Durch immer schnellere und immer wieder neue Reorganisationsmaßnahmen in den Unternehmen hat sich der Fokus der Forschung immer stärker in Richtung Organisation gewandelt. Hinzu kommt der demografische Wandel, welcher erhebliche Konsequenzen für die Personalbeschaffung der Unternehmen hat. Die Zahl an Nachwuchskräften sinkt und zugleich erhöht sich der Bedarf nach Fachkräften. Doch eine wachsende Zahl von Unternehmen erkennt das Potenzial von betrieblicher Gesundheitspolitik und dass Innovationskraft sowie Wettbewerbsfähigkeit von Unternehmen, Verwaltungen und Dienstleistungsorganisationen von der Motivation und Leistungsfähigkeit ihrer Beschäftigten abhängen und ihr Denken und Handeln von ihrem Wohlbefinden und ihrer Gesundheit beeinflusst werden. Den Unternehmen wird bewusst, dass das Fördern der Mitarbeitergesundheit hilft, die Betriebsergebnisse zu verbessern und die Kosten der sozialen Sicherung zu dämpfen. Durch die betriebliche Gesundheitspolitik werden Prioritäten zum Schutz und zur Förderung von Gesundheit und Sicherheit der Mitarbeiter definiert. Es wird das zur Anwendung kommende Verständnis von Gesundheit formuliert und somit die angenommenen Wirkungsketten festgelegt. Als Teil der Unternehmenspolitik dient sie den Unternehmenszielen ebenso wie dem Wohlbefinden und der Leistungsfähigkeit der Mitarbeiter. Durch die betriebliche Gesundheitspolitik und dem daraus resultierenden Strukturwandel nehmen Arbeitsunfälle, Berufskrankheiten und tödliche Unfälle zunehmend ab.
