This volume, originally published in 1958, contains a selection of the most important and interesting articles by Knut Wicksell, which had hitherto only been published in Swedish. They cover Wicksell's views on Economics and monetary theory, his theory of production and distribution, some review articles on the works of Pareto, Böhm-Bawerk, Carl Menger and Bowley and some papers on foreign trade problems, written after the First World War. Erik Lindahl's introductory essay gives a picture of Wicksell the social reformer, who radical opinions often brought him into conflict with the authorities and the general public.

Papers in Economics and Sociology is a compilation of materials authored by the Polish economist Oskar Lange. The coverage of the essays covers the interrelations between economic and social issues. The text first covers the Marxist and socialist theory, and then proceeds to tackling political economy and socialism. Next, the selection deals with economic theory, along with the mathematical models, econometrics, and statistics utilized in economic analysis. In the last decades, machine learning techniques – especially techniques of deep learning – led to numerous successes in many application areas, including economics. The use of machine learning in economics is the main focus of this book; however, the book also describes the use of more traditional econometric techniques. Applications include practically all major sectors of economics: agriculture, health (including the impact of Covid-19), manufacturing, trade, transportation, etc. Several papers analyze the effect of age, education, and gender on economy – and, more generally, issues of fairness and discrimination.We hope that this volume will:help practitioners to become better knowledgeable of the state-of-the-art econometric techniques, especially techniques of machine learning,and help researchers to further develop these important research directions. This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 24th International Conference on Group Decision and Negotiation, GDN 2024, which took place in Porto, Portugal, during June 2–5, 2024. The field of Group Decision and Negotiation focuses on decision processes with at least two participants and a common goal but conflicting individual goals. This book explores the under-researched sources of the consumerist culture and the environmental damage it has brought about. The book is an outcome of the symposium on “The Ethics of Consumption” organised and hosted by the Las Casas Institute at the Blackfriars Hall, University of Oxford as part of its Economics as a Moral Science Programme. This book contains eight papers focusing on factors associated with the growth of government. There is a large literature in public economics, especially public choice, on the determinants of the growth of government. The papers in this volume focus on a number of arguments related to why government has grown in many developed countries during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Chapters focus on taxation, trade openness, technology, income changes, and tax compliance. The volume features prominent scholars such as Nobel Laureate Gary Becker, Casey Mulligan, Gordon Tullock, Randall Holcombe, and Tyler Cowen.

From May 20 to May 24, 1986 a conference on distributive justice and in­ equality was held at the Institute for Advanced Study Berlin (Wis­ senschaftskolleg zu Berlin). More than thirty scholars participated in this conference. The topics of the presentations ranged from ethics, welfare economics and social choice theory to characterizations of inequality meas­ ures and redistributive taxation schemes. This book contains a selection of the papers given at the conference. This collection of articles also appeared as issues 2 and 3 of volume 5 of Social Choice and Welfare. In the first paper P. Suppes argues for a pluralistic concept of equity. For too long the emphasis has been on income distribution but there are other characteristics which are important when one talks about equity. Suppes suggests that it would be desirable to have Lorenz curves for a variety of fea­ tures of societies, such as education, health and housing. P. Dasgupta studies the quality of lives in terms of an index of living stand­ ards. One has to distinguish between'same number choices'(the number of lives is given) and'different numbers choices'(problem of optimum popUlation). The author argues that in the latter case the anonymity (or sym­ metry) axiom cannot be readily defended. Once it is dropped, however, an incoherence in the moral ordering of possible worlds arises. The moral basis for different numbers choices becomes generation-dependent, an overall moral ordering of possible worlds no longer exists.

State of the art modeling of investment behavior and analysis of incentive and allocative effects of taxation on investment behavior are reported in these proceedings. Leading researchers from seven OECD countries treat problems ranging from modeling investment behavior and estimating investment equations with various data sets to detailed studies of tax influences on investment behavior. Particular attention is paid to tax reform plans, especially in West Germany and the UK. The role of financial variables and uncertainty is analysed. A major topic in the volume is recent work within Tobin's Q-theoretic framework. Papers report developments and applications of Q-type investment functions, and for the first time estimated Q-theoretic investment equations are presented for West German industries taking into account the complex tax structure.

This book presents the proceedings of the International Science and Technology Conference “FarEastCon 2020,” which took place on October 6–9, 2020, in Vladivostok, Russian Federation. The conference provided a platform for gathering expert opinions on projects and initiatives aimed at the implementation of far-sighted scientific research and development and allowed current theoretical and practical advances to be shared with the broader research community. Featuring selected papers from the conference, this book is of interest to experts in various fields whose work involves developing innovative solutions and increasing the efficiency of economic activities.

This compilation begins by discussing the connection between perceived employability and job insecurity on psychological health and job-related outcome variables. A study testing this correlation is presented, with results suggesting that perceived employability and job insecurity facilitates the effects of self-efficacy on psychological health, job satisfaction, and dedication. Additionally, research on productivity growth in 55 major Australian urban water utilities over a four-year period is described. In this study, productivity growth was broken-down into technical efficiency and technological change by way of Malmquist indices. Later, price dynamics are investigated to determine market integration, market efficiency and spatial arbitrage. Based on empirical investigations, several policy implications are derived in terms of efficacy and effectiveness of policy measures, or interventions on trade policies. The authors provide a review of federal-level regulation of the U.S. interstate natural gas pipeline industry, placing modern rules and regulations into their appropriate historical context by reviewing the evolution of gas pipeline regulation over the course of the 20th Century. The authors also examine the question of the creation of global government and global currency, especially analyzing the current unstable financial system and the threat of war resulting from unstable intergovernmental relationships. The use of global currency is imagined under the surveillance of a Global Central Bank, which would consist of representatives of national governments with voting rights determined by the share of national GNP in total gross product in the community of participating nations. A paper exploring restaurant bankruptcy in the U.S. between 1980 and 2014 is included, with the goal of developing a bankruptcy prediction model and explaining that restaurateurs should be more cautious in selecting their operation types to aid in financial stability. The active relationship between economic growth, inflation, stock market development, and globalization is studied using the panel VAR methodology, with the objective of determining the behavior of certain variables and observing how these elements interact with one another. Another paper studies whether or not the financial market of China is integrated with the financial market of the U.S., with its data converted into cumulative partial sums by using a software component created by the authors in Octave language. By estimating the asymmetric generalized impulse response functions, the authors suggest that these financial markets are linked interactively when the markets are falling. A final paper is presented investigating the nature of dependence between stock prices and exchange rate in Nigeria from January of 2000 to December of 2015. Overall, the evidence indicates the dominance of the portfolio balance effect, with stock prices leading the exchange rate. This leads the authors to determine that stabilizing the stock market is imperative for exchange rate management to minimize the transmission of systemic risk and contagion between both markets.

This paper proposes an empirical framework that distinguishes voluntary from involuntary compliance with fiscal deficit targets on the basis of economic, institutional, and political factors. The framework is applied to Spain's Autonomous Communities (regions) over the period 2002-2015. Fiscal noncompliance among Spain's regions has shown to be persistent. It increases with the size of growth forecast errors and the extent to which fiscal targets are tightened, factors not fully under the control of regional governments. Non-compliance also tends to increase during election years, when vertical fiscal imbalances accentuate, and market financing costs subside. Strong fiscal rules have not shown any significant impact in containing fiscal non-compliance. Reducing fiscal non-compliance in multilevel governance systems such as the one in Spain requires a comprehensive assessment of intergovernmental fiscal arrangements that looks beyond rules-based frameworks by ensuring enforcement procedures are politically credible.

This book asks, how would a stable, prosperous economy of the future look if one started with a blank sheet of paper? Given that the world's economy is locked into a coevolution with nature, the urgency of this question is brought into stark relief by the 2020 coronavirus pandemic and ongoing climate change. While physical technologies to build such an economy mostly exist, the social technologies, in the form of institutions, governance and policies, do not. The development of these social technologies will necessitate a reconsideration of economic norms: in particular, what is the economy for, and what are we, as actors within it, striving for? This book integrates normative, institutional, political and economic requirements into a systematic framework to drive our present growth economy toward a future planetarian one. It outlines a suite of interrelated policies to increase the economy's material efficiency, establish a basic living standard, and reform the money system, while along the way eliminating economic debt and balancing government budgets. The framework and policies together form a paradigm of market planetarianism: the idea that the power of markets may be used to steer the economy toward a desired long-term goal. The methodological aspects of this paradigm are covered in the companion volume, Economics of a Crowded Planet.

An important feature of this book is its analysis of various contemporary issues in applied economics, distinguished by advanced theoretical research and empirical analysis focusing on Japan and Korea. Agent-based modeling/simulation is an emergent approach to the analysis of social and economic systems. It provides a bottom-up experimental method to be applied to social sciences such as economics, management, sociology and politics as well as some engineering fields dealing with social activities. This book includes selected papers presented at the Eighth International Workshop on Agent-Based Approaches in Economic and Social Complex Systems held in Tokyo, Japan, in 2013. At the workshop, 23 reviewed full papers were presented and of those, 13 were selected to be included in this volume.

The ATOP (Agent-Based Technologies and Applications for Enterprise Interoperability) workshop series focuses on technologies that support interoperability in networked organizations, on successful applications of these technologies, and on lessons learned. So far two ATOP workshops have been held at the AAMAS conferences in Utrecht, The Netherlands, in July 2005, and in Estoril, Portugal, in May 2008. The 13 papers presented here are extended versions of carefully reviewed and selected contributions to the workshops. The topics covered are business interoperability; organizations and virtual institutions; modeling multiagent systems; agent interaction; and security. The main goal was to collect approaches for the application of agent technologies in these areas. Current trends in the development of agent technologies are compared with recent developments in service-oriented and model-driven system design, with respect to their ability to solve interoperability problems.

This compilation explores the unique form of Dutch government taken at the time, and its relationship with trade policy successes of the most prosperous semi-gubernatorial body of the early modern period – the Dutch East India Company (VOC). By examining the unique form of government taken by the Dutch Republic, the authors work out the nature of the relationship between the Dutch polity and the VOC, attempting to discern the link between the successes of the company and government policies. Afterwards, the authors analyse the main contributions of scientific literature so as to demonstrate that tourism, although having certain limitations as an instrument of economic development in some countries, may be an interesting tool for the improvement of a population's living conditions under specific circumstances. This book compiles the world's main tourist destinations according to the growth of the economic performance of the tourist activity and of the tourist and economic development experienced during the last decade. With this objective, the authors combine information from a set of tourist and economic indicators for the main 45 tourist destinations over the period between 2000 and 2010. Destinations are ranked with respect to their average growth rate over the sample period. A paper is included which focuses on competitiveness research and examines the nature of tourism to provide a rationale for a Tourism Destination Competitiveness (TDC) model specific to tourism by evaluating the literature on the meaning of competitiveness and different perspectives of the concept. An assessment of the main arguments for and against comparative advantage and competitive advantage aids in building a better understanding on tourism flows on the basis of an integrated TDC model. Afterwards, the export structure and export performance of Macedonian economy is analysed, as a less developed transitional CEE country, in order to identify the main export opportunities for future economic growth by applying new structural economics and product space theory. In order to better inform related resource allocation and policy-level decisions, as well as to generate a rationale for continued support for health and development programs in Papua New Guinea, the book examines a range of related development constraints and develops a series of recommendations for their resolution based on smart intervention design, with a specific focus on monitoring and evaluation (M&E) components. Lastly, this collection examines the effect of financial development on economic growth conditions at the level of institutional quality for a panel of 21 Sub-Saharan African countries in the period of 1986-2010. This evidence suggest the existing institutions has not enhanced the finance-growth relationship in the region.
