This book constitutes the refereed post-conference proceedings of the 20th International Conference, LENLS20, held in Osaka, Japan, during November 18-20, 2023. The 19 full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 46 submissions. The conference aims to cover the topics at the Intersection of Language and logic, and so Centers Around Linguistics, both Theoretical and Computational; Logic; Philosophy; and other sorts of Formal Approaches to these topics such as Game Theory.

This volume is a collection of essays related to the work of Professor Yuriy Vasilievich Ivlev, a distinguished Russian logician and philosopher renowned for his expertise in many-valued and modal logics. Notably, his groundbreaking work on quasi-matrices for logics, now recognized as non-deterministic matrices and non-deterministic semantics, emerged in the 1970s. From a philosophical standpoint, Ivlev's research delves into the formal analysis of indeterminacy, offering a logical framework to understand how sequences of indeterminate events can yield determinate outcomes. The volume follows two complementary lines of research. Firstly, it serves as a platform for the exploration and discussion of Ivlev's seminal contributions to the algebraic characterization of both normal and non-normal modal logics, aimed at making these insights accessible to an international audience. This book constitutes the proceedings of the 22nd International Semantic Web Conference, ISWC 2023, which took place in October 2023 in Athens, Greece. The 58 full papers presented in this double volume were thoroughly reviewed and selected from 248 submissions. Many submissions focused on the use of reasoning and query answering, witha number addressing engineering, maintenance, and alignment tasks for ontologies. Likewise, there has been a healthy batch of submissions on search, query, integration, and the analysis of knowledge. Finally, following the growing interest in neuro-symbolic approaches, there has been a rise in the number of studies that focus on the use of Large Language Models and Deep Learning techniques such as Graph Neural Networks.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Logic and Argumentation, CLAR 2023, held in Hangzhou, China, during September 10-12, 2023. The 11 full papers, one short paper and one invited paper presented in this book were carefully reviewed and selected from 20 submissions. The papers focus on topics such as: ​logic and automated deduction; abstract and structured argumentation; dialogues, games and practical reasoning; and quantitative argumentation.

Samson Abramsky's wide-ranging contributions to logical and structural aspects of Computer Science have had a major influence on the field. It is not always clear what computer programs mean in the various languages in which they can be written, yet a picture can be worth 1000 words, a diagram 1000 instructions. In this unique textbook/reference, programs are drawn as string diagrams in the language of categories, which display a universal syntax of mathematics (Computer scientists use them to analyze the program semantics; programmers to display the syntax of computations). Here, the string-diagrammatic depictions of computations are construed as programs in a single-instruction programming language. This book celebrates and expands on J. Michael Dunn's work on informational interpretations of logic. Dunn, in his Ph.D. thesis (1966), introduced a semantics for first-degree entailments utilizing the idea that a sentence can provide positive or negative information about a topic, possibly supplying both or neither. He later published a related interpretation of the logic R-mingle, which turned out to be one of the first relational semantics for a relevance logic. An incompatibility relation between information states lends itself to a definition of negation and it has figured into Dunn's comprehensive investigations into representations of various negations. The informational view of semantics is also a prominent theme in Dunn's research on other logics, such as quantum logic and linear logic, and led to the encompassing theory of generalized Galois logics (or'gaggles'). Dunn's latest work addresses informational interpretations of the ternary accessibility relation and the verynature of information. The book opens with Dunn's autobiography, followed by a list of his publications. It then presents a series of papers written by respected logicians working on different aspects of information-based logics. The topics covered include the logic R-mingle, which was introduced by Dunn, and its applications in mathematical reasoning as well as its importance in obtaining results for other relevance logics. There are also interpretations of the accessibility relation in the semantics of relevance and other non-classical logics using different notions of information. Strategic behavior is the key to social interaction, from the ever-evolving world of living beings to the modern theatre of designed computational agents. Strategies can make or break participants'aspirations, whether they are selling a house, playing the stock market, or working toward a treaty that limits global warming. This book aims at understanding the phenomenon of strategic behavior in its proper width and depth. This Festschrift volume contains papers presented at a conference, Prakash Fest, held in honor of Prakash Panangaden, in Oxford, UK, in May 2014, to celebrate his 60th birthday. Prakash Panangaden has worked on a large variety of topics including probabilistic and concurrent computation, logics and duality and quantum information and computation. Despite the enormous breadth of his research, he has made significant and deep contributions. The European Summer School in Logic, Language and Information (ESSLLI) is organized every year by the Association for Logic, Language and Information (FoLLI) in different sites around Europe. The main focus of ESSLLI is on the interface between linguistics, logic and computation. ESSLLI offers foundational, introductory and advanced courses, as well as workshops, covering a wide variety of topics within the three areas of interest: Language and Computation, Language and Logic, and Logic and Computation. The 16 papers presented in this volume have been selected among 44 papers presented by talks or posters at the Student Sessions of the 24th and 25th editions of ESSLLI, held in 2012 in Opole, Poland, and 2013 in Düsseldorf, Germany. The volume contains 13 full revised papers along with 3 invited talks presented at the conference. The papers were selected after rigorous review, from 23 submissions. They cover topics related to pure and applied formal logic, foundations and philosophy of mathematics and the sciences, set theory, model theory, proof theory, areas of theoretical computer science, artificial intelligence, systems of logic in the Indian tradition, and other disciplines which are of direct interest to mathematical and philosophical logic.

The volume analyses and develops David Makinson's efforts to make classical logic useful outside its most obvious application areas. The book contains chapters that analyse, appraise, or reshape Makinson's work and chapters that develop themes emerging from his contributions. These are grouped into major areas to which Makinsons has made highly influential contributions and the volume in its entirety is divided into four sections, each devoted to a particular area of logic: belief change, uncertain reasoning, normative systems and the resources of classical logic.Among the contributions included in the volume, one chapter focuses on the “inferential preferential method”, i.e. the combined use of classical logic and mechanisms of preference and choice and provides examples from Makinson's work in non-monotonic and defeasible reasoning and belief revision. One chapter offers a short autobiography by Makinson which details his discovery of modern logic, his travels across continents and reveals his intellectual encounters and inspirations. The chapter also contains an unusually explicit statement on his views on the (limited but important) role of logic in philosophy.

This volume contains a collection of research papers centered around the concept of quantifier. Recently this concept has become the central point of research in logic. It is one of the important logical concepts whose exact domain and applications have so far been insufficiently explored, especially in the area of inferential and semantic properties of languages. It should thus remain the central point of research in the future. Moreover, during the last twenty years generalized quantifiers and logical technics based on them have proved their utility in various applications. The example of natu­ rallanguage semantics has been partcularly striking. For a long time it has been belived that elementary logic also called first-order logic was an ade­ quate theory of logical forms of natural language sentences. Recently it has been accepted that semantics of many natural language constructions can­ not be properly represented in elementary logic. It has turned out, however, that they can be described by means of generalized quantifiers. As far as computational applications oflogic are concerned, particulary interesting are semantics restricted to finite models. Under this restriction elementary logic looses several of its advantages such as axiomatizability and compactness. And for various purposes we can use equally well some semantically richer languages of which generalized quantifiers offer the most universal methods of describing extensions of elementary logic. Moreover we can look at generalized quantifiers as an explication of some specific mathematical concepts, e. g.

Quantifiers: Logics, Models and Computation is the first concentrated effort to give a systematic presentation of the main research results on the subject, since the modern concept was formulated in the late'50s and early'60s. The majority of the papers are in the nature of a handbook. All of them are self-contained, at various levels of difficulty. The Introduction surveys the main ideas and problems encountered in the logical investigation of quantifiers. The Prologue, written by Per Lindström, presents the early history of the concept of generalised quantifiers. The volume then continues with a series of papers surveying various research areas, particularly those that are of current interest. Together they provide introductions to the subject from the points of view of mathematics, linguistics, and theoretical computer science. The present volume has been prepared in parallel with Quantifiers: Logics, Models and Computation, Volume Two. Contributions, which contains a collection of research papers on the subject in areas that are too fresh to be summarised. The two volumes are complementary. For logicians, mathematicians, philosophers, linguists and computer scientists. Suitable as a text for advanced undergraduate and graduate specialised courses in logic.

This Festschrift volume, published in memory of Harald Ganzinger, contains 17 papers from colleagues all over the world and covers all the fields to which Harald Ganzinger dedicated his work during his academic career. The volume begins with a complete account of Harald Ganzinger's work and then turns its focus to the research of his former colleagues, students, and friends who pay tribute to him through their writing. Their individual papers span a broad range of topics, including programming language semantics, analysis and verification, first-order and higher-order theorem proving, unification theory, non-classical logics, reasoning modulo theories, and applications of automated reasoning in biology.

Sophus Lie (1842-1899) is without doubt one of Norway's greatest scientific talents. His mathematical works have made him famous around the world no less than Niels Henrik Abel. The terms Lie groups and Lie algebra are today part of the standard mathematical vocabulary. In his comprehensive biography the author Arild Stubhaug let us come close to both the person Sophus Lie and his time. We follow him through childhood at the vicarage in Nordfjordeid, his growing up in Moss, school and studying in Christiania, travelling in Europe and his contacts with the leading mathematicians of his time. The academic and scientific career brought Lie from Christiania to Leipzig as professor, before the attempt to call him back to Norway, when she stood on the threshhold to national sovereignty, was successful.

This book collects the papers presented at the 4th International Workshop on Logic, Rationality and Interaction/ (LORI-4), held in October 2013 at the /Center for the Study of Language and Cognition, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China. LORI is a series that brings together researchers from a variety of logic-related fields: Game and Decision Theory, Philosophy, Linguistics, Computer Science and AI. This year had a special emphasis on Norms and Argumentation. Out of 42 submissions, 23 full papers and 11 short contributions have been selected through peer-review for inclusion in the workshop program and in this volume. The quality and diversity of these contributions witnesses a lively, fast-growing, and interdisciplinary community working at the intersection of logic and rational interaction.
