This is a tribute to the scientific career and life of Jule G. Charney (1917-1981). The centerpiece of this memorial volume is a transcription of a taped interview with Jule Charney shortly before his death in 1981. George W. Platzman who also conducted the interview, edited the transcript of the tapes to what is now chapter 2 in this book. The remainder of this volume is devoted to essays by several highly respected experts in the field of meteorology. Some are dealing with Jule Charney's influence on his field, others with appreciations of specific phases of his work. The volume is completed by reprints of some of Jule Charney's own work. For those who were fortunate enough to know Jule Charney personally, this volume will be a reminder of his presence. This book is composed of 12 review papers invited for the Palmen Memorial Symposium on Extratropical Cyclones held in Helsinki, Finland, 29 August - 2 September 1988. To celebrate the 90th anniversary of the birth of Professor Erik Palmén, this symposium was organized to give a state-of-the-art picture of research on the structure and dynamics of extratropical cyclones, a topic which Palmén pioneered during the era of advances in aerological analysis. This symposium was organized by the Geophysical Society of Finland and the American Meteorological Society in cooperation with the Danish, Norwegian and Swedish Geophysical Societies. Extratropical Cyclones offers state-of-the-art information on extratropical cyclones, and recent findings by European and American authorities in various subject areas. The first two chapters discuss Palmen's works on cyclones and his early general circulation concepts. The ten chapters following chronicle the advancesin understanding cyclones; the theory, structure, and physical processes of cyclones; orographic cyclogenesis; and more. Extratropical Cyclones also contains synoptic case analyses, modeling results, examples of the phenomena discussed, and abundant references. While particular aspects are emphasized in the individual contributions, the book as a whole summarizes the major features of various kinds of extratropical cyclones based on observational analyses, theory and numerical experimentation. This volume is of interest to researchers in dynamic and synoptic meteorology, climatology and mesometeorology, as well as in numerical modeling and weather forecasting. Gisela Kutzbach has provided an unparalleled account of the mainstream of meteorological thought during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This book takes us from the era of attempts to describe disturbances as mechanistic interactions of air currents, through Espy's introduction in the 1830's of the proposition that cyclones are convective systems driven by heat of condensation in central rainy areas, up to the distinctively different polar front theory of 1920, often considered as the birth of modern meteorology. Based on a data series of more than 50 years, this book discusses spatial and seasonal variability in air-mass and frontal extreme precipitation frequency and as well as the relationship between their occurrence and atmospheric circulation. The climatology of air-mass and frontal extreme precipitation is presented for the first time on a European scale. Since there is no robust, automatic method of locating atmospheric fronts, this challenging task has to be performed manually. Moreover, there is limited availability of the complex sub-daily data that is necessary to recognize the dynamic of meteorological fronts. The results show a clear regional and seasonal variety in the relationship between extreme precipitation occurrence and atmospheric circulation depending on precipitation origin. The probability of air-mass and frontal precipitation occurrence provides crucial information for studies in predictability and modeling. Dieses Buch ist als Einführung in die Meteorologie gedacht. Es informiert über die ver­ schiedenen Prozesse in der Atmosphäre der Erde. Das Buch sollte in erster Linie als Lehrbuch für den akademischen Unterricht in Meteorologie dienen, kann aber auch in anderen Wissenschaftszweigen, wie z. B. in der Geographie, Verwendung finden. Für das Verständnis des Buches sind nur die Gymnasialkenntnisse der Mathematik nötig. Selbst Leser ohne eigentliche Mathematikkenntnisse können sich daraus das Wesentliche aneignen. Die ersten 22 Kapitel des Buches kommen in logischer Abfolge; es werden zunächst die einfachen meteorologischen Grundbegriffe eingeführt, die im folgenden angewendet werden. Die Schlußkapitel 23 bis 27 haben einen mehr vervollständigenden und informativen Charakter. Die schwedische Ausgabe dieses Buches erschien 1962 und wurde seither als Lehrbuch im Meteorologiestudium an schwedischen Universitäten verwendet. Mit den dabei ge­ wonnenen Erfahrungen wurde die deutsche Ausgabe überarbeitet und modernisiert. Außerdem wurde das Buch in mancher Hinsicht für Studierende in Mitteleuropa an­ gepaßt, vor allem, was die Diskussion der Wetterlagen und die Illustrationen betrifft. Universitätsdozent Dr. Konrad Cehak, Wien, hat nicht nur die Übersetzung vorgenommen, sondern hat auch große Teile der Revision des Buches ausgeführt.
