- Abstract
This book problematises and then reshapes critical social work to bring a range of perspectives to what constitutes truly effective and ethical social work practice, moving beyond binary oppositions (where two states or concepts are defined as opposite to each other) to create new words and concepts to be inclusive of a range of identities, practice contexts, and groups or communities of service users.Currently, critical social work, derived from sociological critical theories proliferated in the 1960s, enjoys dominance as the theory that encompasses the ethical principles of social work in Australia. While on the surface critical social work appears to align with the Australian Association of Social Workers'(AASW) ethical principles of social justice, professional integrity, and respect for persons, practitioners, and students alike find enacting it can be problematic in complex practice situations.Reporting original research of cases from the field, the book focuses on the impact of intersectionality and shows new ways to address the nuance of othering and modern-day colonialism. It will be of interest to researchers, practitioners, and students who are keen to engage with the latest in the field of critical social work and consider implications of this for the development of their own identity.

- Abstract
Tribalism is a key evolutionary feature of humans, and the recent growth in tribal polarisation presents a serious challenge to our highly individualistic civilisation. This fascinating book examines the psychological origins and consequences of tribalism both in our private and in our public lives. The chapters explore how social, evolutionary, biological, and cognitive factors shape our tribal habits, featuring contributions from eminent international researchers. The chapters review the nature and origins of tribalism, the psychological mechanisms promoting tribalism, how tribal narratives can distort rationality and perceptions of reality, and the role of tribalism in politics and public affairs. The contributions investigate how insecurity, the search for meaning and attachment, victimhood, grievance, and cognitive shortcomings can facilitate tribal bonding and how such groups once formed can foster conflict, hatred, and irrational behaviours. The book suggests that the survival of our extremely successful civilisation based on the enlightenment values of liberty and individualism may well depend on our ability to understand and manage the human evolutionary propensity for tribalism. The book will be of great interest to students and researchers in psychology, sociology, and other disciplines of behavioural and social sciences, as well as all readers who seek to understand one of the most intriguing issues that shape human social life.

- Abstract
Geographic information, spatial analysis and geospatial technologies play an important role in understanding changes in planetary health and in defining the drivers contributing to different health outcomes both locally and globally. Patterns influencing health outcomes and disease in the environment are complex and require an understanding of the ecology of the disease and how these interact in space and time. Knowing where and when diseases are prevalent, who is affected and what may be driving these outcomes is important for determining how to respond. In reality, we all would like to be healthy and live in healthy places. In this book, epidemiology and public health are integrated with spatial data science to examine health issues in dynamically changing environments. This is too broad a field to be completely covered in one book, and so, it has been necessary to be selective with the topics, methods and examples used to avoid overwhelming introductory readers while at the same time providing sufficient depth for geospatial experts interested in health and for health professionals interested in integrating geospatial elements for health analysis. A variety of geographic information (some novel, some volunteered, some authoritative, some big and messy) is used with a mix of methods consisting of spatial analysis, data science and spatial statistics to better understand health risks and disease outcomes.Key Features: Makes spatial data science accessible to health Integrates epidemiology and disease ecology with spatial data science Integrates theoretical geographic information science concepts Provides practical and applied approaches for examining and exploring health and disease risks Provides spatial data science skill development ranging from map making to spatial modelling

- Abstract
As the field of behavioral health continues to evolve beyond the confines of traditional outpatient office settings, there is a growing need for providers who are adept at delivering evidence-based services across various specialty environments. This need is particularly pronounced when it comes to pediatric populations, where the consequences of unidentified or untreated behavioral health issues can be severe and long lasting. Recognizing these challenges, this book edition aims to facilitate workforce and skills development for professionals working in multiple specialty settings where pediatric behavioral health concerns frequently arise. The text will serve as a comprehensive resource for supervisors and trainees, emphasizing a discrete skill and competency-based approach tailored to the unique demands of each setting. By focusing on the development of specific competencies, the text will ensure that providers are equipped to address the diverse needs of pediatric patients effectively. This includes settings such as schools, hospitals, primary care clinics, and community-based programs, where early identification and intervention are crucial. In schools, for example, behavioral health providers need to be proficient in collaborating with educators and understanding the educational impacts of behavioral health issues. They must also be skilled in implementing school-wide interventions and working directly with students who exhibit behavioral or emotional difficulties. In hospital settings, providers must be prepared to address the complex interplay between physical and mental health, often working as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide holistic care to young patients. Primary care clinics represent another critical setting, where behavioral health concerns are often first identified. Providers in these environments need to be skilled in integrating behavioral health services into routine medical care, conducting screenings, and offering brief interventions. Community-based programs, on the other hand, require providers to engage with diverse populations, often in under-resourced areas, necessitating a high degree of cultural competence and adaptability. Overall, this text will highlight the importance of specialized training and continuous professional development to meet the evolving needs of pediatric populations in various specialty settings. By promoting a competency-based approach, it will empower providers to deliver high-quality, evidence-based care, ultimately improving outcomes for children and adolescents facing behavioral health challenges.

- Abstract
This book provides an in-depth treatment of three important topical areas related to regulatory, ethical, and technical discussions in the context of information retrieval and recommender systems (IRRSs): (1) bias, fairness, and non-discrimination, (2) transparency and explainability, and (3) privacy and security. Sometimes referred to as trustworthiness dimensions, they are analyzed by taking an interdisciplinary perspective and incorporating views from computer science, social sciences, psychology, and law and by particularly considering the related technical challenges, societal impact, ethical considerations, and regulatory approaches. After an introduction, the book first provides an overview of recent initiatives and already operational policies to regulate AI technology and discusses them in the context of IRRSs, focusing on regulations in Europe, the US, and China. Subsequent chapters present categories of biases, their relation to fairness and non-discrimination and ways to discover and mitigate harmful biases; major facets of transparency, with a focus on explainability (including common strategies to achieve it), traceability, and auditability; and privacy and security including technical approaches to mitigate privacy risks such as anonymization techniques and encryption methods. Eventually, the last chapter provides an outlook on the grand challenges in IRRSs, such as dealing with discrepancies between formal attempts, human perception, and regulatory frameworks for trustworthy IRRSs; understanding the capabilities and limitations of existing solutions in terms of fairness, transparency, and privacy; and adopting a multistakeholder perspective when developing solutions for fair, transparent, and privacy-preserving IRRSs. The book targets a mostly technical readership and aims to equip it with the necessary understanding of the ethical implications of their research and development in IRRSs as well as of recent policy initiatives and regulatory approaches. While a basic knowledge of IRRSs is assumed to fully comprehend the more technical and algorithmic parts of the book, even a lay audience in terms of technical background should benefit from the book.

While the work of Sofia Coppola is sometimes dismissed as being stereotypically feminine and placing more focus on spectacle over substance, Sofia Coppola and Generation X (So Far): Anxious and Effervescent draws attention to common characteristics present in Coppola's films to present an authorial signature and aesthetic that are both familiar yet evocative of Generation X's perception in the public consciousness. In analyzing Coppola's films from The Virgin Suicides (1999) to Priscilla (2023), this book argues that her filmography acts as a reflection of her generation's evolving mindset and self-image from its initial rise to prominence during the late 1980s to its current sentiment of discomfort with its fading influence.

- Abstract
There are currently over 1.3 billion people globally who experience exclusion and inequality rooted in persistent and deep ableism. Quality research with and about disabled people is vital to changing this situation. Such research presents ethical challenges and complexities which have not been given the attention they deserve if we are to advance disability rights as promised by the UNCRPD and other equality and human rights commitments. Considering important aspects of general ethical principles, including respect, consent, privacy and confidentiality, this volume of Advances in Research Ethics and Integrity fills that gap. It does so while also recognising the broad scope, diversity and significant size of the disabled population. Experienced researchers from the field examine processes of disablement and the specificities which arise when researching the lives of people with physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments. Authors also incorporate social factors such as gender, ethnicity and age and how they interact with disability. - Abstract
Animal Welfare in a Pandemic explores the impact of COVID-19 on a wide array of animals, from those in the wild to companion and captive animals. During the height of the pandemic, a range of animals were infected, and many died, but this was hard to predict, even using up-to-date bioinformatics. Lockdowns around the world had, and continue to have, a major effect on animals'welfare, influencing pet ownership and care, as well as impacting on the work of conservation institutes due to the lack of visitors and funding and lack of tourist presence in the wild which impacted on anti-poaching efforts. Some of the vast amount of personal protection equipment (PPE) that was distributed was discarded, creating both dangers and occasional opportunities for wild animals. With the rollout of human vaccines, some countries started developing animal vaccines, only some of which were deployed. In summary, the pandemic had a wide-ranging influence on animal welfare around the world. This is reviewed to highlight what can be learned to protect and enhance animal welfare in future epidemics/pandemics, and contribute to a genuinely One Health approach where the health and welfare of both humans and animals are considered holistically. This book is authored by members of the University of the West of England, Bristol, who span a range of expertise in Biological Sciences, Social Sciences, Animal Welfare, and Ethics.

29. Information, Institutions, and Local Government in England, 1550-1700 : Turning Inside
- Author
-
Paul Griffiths and Paul Griffiths
- Abstract
The years between 1550 and 1700 saw significant changes in the nature and scope of local government: sophisticated information and intelligence systems were developed; magistrates came to rely more heavily on surveillance to inform'good government'; and England's first nationwide system of incarceration was established within bridewells. But while these sizeable and lasting shifts have been well studied, less attention has been paid to the important characteristic that they shared: the'turning inside'of the title. What was happening beneath this growth in activity was a shift from'open'to'closed'management of a host of problems--from the representation of authority itself to treatment of every kind of local disorder, from petty crime and poverty to dirty streets. Information, Institutions, and Local Government in England, 1550-1700 explores the character and consequences of these changes for the first time. Drawing on wide-ranging archival research in 34 archives, the book examines the ways in which the notion of representing authority and ethics in public (including punishment) was increasingly called into question in early modern England, and how and why local government officials were involved in this. This'turning inside'was encouraged by insistence on precision and clarity in broad bodies of knowledge, culture, and practice that had lasting impacts on governance, as well as a range of broader demographic, social, and economic changes that led to deeper poverty, thinner resources, more movement, and imagined or real crime-waves. In so doing, and by drawing on a diverse range of examples, the book offers important new perspectives on local government, visual representation, penal cultures, institutions, incarceration, and surveillance in the early modern period.

- Author
-

- Abstract
The fields of molecular evolution, genome evolution, and evolutionary genetics are now well-established. Remarkably, however, although all evolutionary modifications begin at the cellular level, and despite the advances made in cell biology and microbiology over the past few decades, there is as yet no recognised discipline of evolutionary cell biology. The goal of this book is to help establish the foundations for this emerging field. Its principal aims are twofold: firstly, to promote an understanding among evolutionary biologists as to why the cellular details matter if we are to understand the mechanisms of evolution; secondly, to make clear to non-evolutionary biologists - cell biologists in particular - that evolution is not just a matter of natural selection and optimization, but a process whose reach depends on other population genetic features such as mutation, recombination, and random genetic drift. Although there are many excellent books on cell biology, microbiology, and biophysics, almost no attention is given to evolution. Likewise, although there are numerous evolutionary biology books on the market, none of them gives more than passing attention to details at the cellular level. Thus Evolutionary Cell Biology is genuinely novel, offering a broader understanding of evolutionary processes and an appreciation for the many interesting problems that remain to be solved at the cellular and subcellular levels. This advanced textbook is aimed at both cell biologists and evolutionary biologists. It will be accessible to upper-level undergraduates in biology, and certainly to graduate students in all areas of the life sciences. Professionals from a wide range of fields - cell biology, microbiology, evolution, biophysics, biochemistry, and mathematics - will be exposed to entirely new ideas not traditionally covered in their primary fields of expertise.

- Abstract
This book offers integrative treatments for clinical depression based on the biopsychosocial model. Keith Dobson synthesizes decades of research and professional experience in this comprehensive guide that follows the therapy process from beginning to end. He starts with a theoretical overview of depression, including its associated features, risk and resiliency factors, and offers a comparative evaluation of various models of depression. Clinical chapters review the intake process, from the initial interview, to formulating an early case conceptualization and ensuring the client's involvement. Dobson then presents an organizational model to determine which issues to focus on in therapy, and the optimal interventions to address them. He also describes common strategies to target problematic behaviors and cognitions, develop problem-solving skills, and modify maladaptive thoughts and schemas. Guidelines for ending therapy and preventing relapse are also provided, as are considerations related to comorbid disorders, clients'relationships with significant others, and in-person vs. distance treatment. Recurring case examples with two hypothetical clients help to demonstrate the entire process for assessing, conceptualizing, and treating clinical depression.

- Abstract
Myopia, commonly called nearsightedness, has been increasing globally. If current trends continue, there will be 5 billion near-sighted individuals globally by 2050. The understanding of myopia has been enhanced by advances in genetics, investigations employing animal models, understanding of physiology, ocular imaging, epidemiology, environmental research, and clinical trials of interventional strategies. To further develop the knowledge base related to myopia and to reduce the incidence and negative consequences of the disease, eye care professionals, federal agencies, and funding agencies need to make improvements to standardize care, increase funding to study treatments, encourage outdoor time, and overall facilitate the standardization of assessments and diagnostics. Progress in these areas is imperative to address the current increase in myopia across the country. Myopia: Causes, Prevention, and Treatment of an Increasingly Common Disease identifies and assesses the current mechanistic understanding of myopia pathogenesis and the causes of its increased prevalence. This report also examines knowledge gaps and barriers to progress and develops a research agenda aimed at better understanding the biological and environmental factors that could explain the increasing incidence of myopia.
