Ayant occupé une place de premier ordre dans l'histoire de la Chine contemporaine, Mao Tse-toung aura été aussi ardemment loué que violemment combattu. « Soleil rouge » et source de renouveau pour les uns, « bandit » et source d'obscurantisme pour les autres, l'homme et l'oeuvre ont été déformés par les uns comme par les autres. Dans chaque camp, l'historiographie retranche, ajoute, maquille ou déforme. Après avoir été « choisis », ses écrits ont été amputés, remaniés ou commentés en fonction des exigences du moment. Personne n'a pu saisir le personnage, et déjà il se retire. Certes, il ne saurait être question de vouloir faire la pleine lumière sur Mao Tse-Toung alors que celui-ci n'appartient pas encore à l'Histoire. Aussi ce Cahier n'est-il ni une biographie, ni une étude exhaustive des différents aspects de l'homme ou de sa pensée. Nous avons fait appel à un grand nombre de spécialistes, de nationalités diverses et d'opinions différentes. Nous n'avons pas craint de proposer des études dont les conclusions partielles ou générales se contredisent, estimant que cela ne pouvait que contribuer à la remise en cause de toutes les idées reçues, quelles qu'elles soient. D'ailleurs, il n'est pas certain que le maoïsme comporte en lui-même cette unité qu'on lui prête parfois : l'affirmer serait déjà juger, ce que nous avons voulu éviter. Si nous nous sommes bornés à déplacer les projecteurs autour du personnage, de ses idées et de son action, ce n'était pas avec l'espoir d'en fixer l'image, mais plutôt avec la volonté d'en montrer les innombrables facettes. Tel ou tel éclairage pourra heurter telle ou telle opinion toute faite. Tant mieux, car nous n'avons pas cherché à satisfaire les opinions toutes faites. Yet I think it would be true to say that one could hardly hope to advance very far in the understanding of contemporary theology without some knowledge Of Heidegger's thought. His influence seems to appear everywhere — in demythologizing and the problem of hermeneutics; in the doctrine of man; in theories of revelation; in the debate about God; and in other matters besides. Though not himself a theologian, he is a maker of theology, in the same way in which Plato and Aristotle and Kant have been makers of theology. SO we make no excuse for including him in this series. Heidegger's philosophy is no substitute for Christian theology, and certainly it should not be allowed to dominate the work of the theologian, but it does provide the kind of conceptual framework that the theologian needs if he is to state the Christian faith in terms intelligible to today's world.
