- Abstract
This edited volume covers the development of egg freezing over the last few decades since the pioneering work of Chen in 1986, addressing both the scientific breakthroughs that have occurred and the social and demographic changes that are currently driving an increased demand for'social'egg freezing and a recognition of the important role of'medical'egg freezing for women facing potentially sterilizing oncology therapy. It presents the latest research in egg vitrification, methodologies for optimizing laboratory performance and contemporary clinical management of patients seeking oocyte cryopreservation. Audited international data on access, take-up, use and birth outcomes for women undertaking egg freezing are included. The book also discusses the ethical issues related to access and funding and considers how different legal jurisdictions have approached matters such as storage duration, ownership, donation, anonymity and identification. Such wide-ranging contents will bridge the gap between the highly technical laboratory handbooks and the'popular'tabloid accounts directed at young women considering egg freezing. Drawing on the different approaches to fertility preservation prevailing around the world, with chapters written by leading international experts and edited by Gillian Lockwood, a pioneer of the field whose clinic produced the UK's first'frozen egg'baby in 2002, Egg Freezing in the 21st Century will have an authoritative and global appeal, and may hopefully encourage a change of attitude in some jurisdictions.

This is an open access book. The position of Indonesia and most countries in IMF calculations, facing the same challenges. Each country requires the legal instruments of a good and reliable system of Government to guards against the worst possible economic turmoil. Good governance is an insistence of the constitution in the economic Article 33 paragraph (5), subsequently published Constitution Number: 30 Year of 2014 on Government Administration, contains 17 principles of a good governance. One of the important points of the principle is a government without corruption and manipulation of policy concepts in order to provide access to consolidation in politics and economy. The latest Transparency International report for 2023 shows that Indonesia's corruption perception index was recorded at 34 points on a scale of 0-100 in 2022. This is a 4-point decrease from the previous year. This decline in the CPI also brought down the ranking of Indonesia's CPI globally. It was noted that Indonesia's CPI in 2022 ranked 110th. In the previous year, Indonesia's CPI was ranked 96th globally. Good Governance is all aspects related to the control and supervision of the power of the Government in carrying out its functions through formal and informal institutions. To implement the principles of Good Governance and Clean Government, the Government must implement the principles of accountability and efficient resource management. Good and clean governance will contribute to economic growth and economic growth will have an impact on human development. During the last decades of 20th century, the needs for a good governance has given some impacts and became a recurring theme in literature related to human development. The intervention of government or the quality of government become crucially important in relation to the high achievement of human development. Whereas an effort in improving society's welfare is through economic development. One of dominant aspects in economic development is through legal development. Good law or policy in such country will have some impacts to the existence of good economic growth because supremacy of law is one aspect of a good governance. Law supremacy is an important institution which is related to economic growth because rule of law ensures personal safety, property rights, unbiased contract enforcement, stability of politics, freedom of speech and control of corruption. According to those various issues and debates on economic, legal development and good governance, then the Doctoral Program of the Faculty of Law Sebelas Maret University needs to hold an international conference as a place in exchanging some academic ideas in order to contributes to those legal issues with a theme, “INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON LAW, ECONOMICS, AND GOOD GOVERNANCE”

- Abstract
To Singapore's immediate south, Indonesia's Riau Islands has a population of 2 million and a land area of 8,200 sq kilometres scattered across some 2,000 islands. The better-known islands include: Batam, the province's economic motor; Bintan, the area's cultural heartland and site of the provincial capital, Tanjungpinang; and Karimun, a ship-building hub strategically located near the Straits of Malacca. Leveraging on its proximity to Singapore, the Riau Islands—and particularly Batam—have been a key part of Indonesia's strategy to develop its manufacturing sector since the 1990s. In addition to generating a large number of formal sector jobs and earning foreign exchange, this reorientation opened the way for a number of far-reaching political and social developments. Key among them has been: large-scale migration from other parts of the country; the secession of the Riau Islands from the larger Riau Province; and the creation of a new provincial government. Building on earlier work by the ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute on the SIJORI Cross-Border Region, spanning Singapore, the Malaysian state of Johor, and the Riau Islands, and a second volume looking specifically at Johor, the third volume in this series explores the key challenges facing this fledgling Indonesian province. Adopting a multidisciplinary framework, this book explores three issues: what have been the social, political, and environmental effects of the rapid economic change set in motion in the Riau Islands; to what extent can or should the province seek to reconfigure its manufacturing-based economy; and how have the decentralization reforms implemented across Indonesia affected the Riau Islands.'The Riau Islands: Setting Sail, edited by Francis. E. Hutchinson and Siwage Dharma Negara completes the SIJORI series, following the publications of earlier studies on the Singapore Cross-Border Region and Johor. The book comprises a rich collection of essays covering: the economic development challenges faced by Batam and the other islands; the political setting which highlights centre-periphery dynamics and issues related to the governance of the new province; as well as the social-cultural impacts of economic development which has attracted migration from other parts of Indonesia. This book provides valuable contributions to the study on Cross-Border Regions, enhances our understanding about the dynamics of the SIJORI Growth Triangle, and last but not least fills a gap in knowledge about the Riau Islands which, as the book says, is regarded as marginal from the perspective of Jakarta, but is central in its relation to Singapore as the subregional metropolis.'-- Dewi Fortuna Anwar, Research Professor at the Research Center for Politics, Indonesian Institute of Sciences; Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors, The Habibie Center, Jakarta'This edited volume provides a very comprehensive assessment of the Riau Islands Province, an area that promises to become a new frontier for the economic development of archipelagic Indonesia. Building on its history as a hub for manufacturing, this province now is a growth centre for tourism and the IT business. This in turn creates challenges for policymakers as the province's population grows rapidly, stressing urban areas, changing communities, and placing stress on the environment. In addition, the Riau Islands Province is an interesting subregional arrangement, including another subnational territory, the Malaysian state of Johor, and a nation-state, Singapore. This area is a new frontier in terms of its place and role in global and regional supply chains, and is key for regional development in Asia, as well as the mega-regional arrangements of the CPTPP and RCEP. This volume is an enriching addition to the literature on Indonesian economic development, and will be a reference for central and local government officials, researchers and students, members of the business community, as well as the public.'-- J

- Abstract
This book analyses the intersections between contemporary art and environmental activism in Indonesia.Exploring how the arts have promoted ecological awareness from the late 1960s to the early 2020s, the book shows how the arts have contributed to societal change and public and political responses to environmental crises. This period covers Indonesia's rapid urban development under the totalitarian New Order regime (1967–1998) as well as the enhanced freedom of expression, alternative development models, and environmental problems under the democratic governments since 1998. The book applies the concept of ‘artivism'to refer to the vital role of art in activism. It seeks to identify and contextualise both the potential and limits of environmental artivism in Indonesia, a country whose vibrant art scenes and monumental social transformations provide a productive laboratory for exploring the power of creativity as a social and political change agent. It provides a comprehensive overview of contemporary art from Indonesia, with an in-depth analysis of artivists who seek to address and find solutions for some of the most pressing environmental issues of our times. With its detailed, empirical approach to environmental art from Southeast Asia, this project fills in an important gap in the literature on art and activism. It is aimed at academics, students, artists, curators, policymakers, activists, and general readers with an interest in the environment, art history, and Indonesian culture, society, and politics.

- Abstract
The digital economy, broadly defined as the economy operating on the basis of interconnectivity between people and businesses, has gradually spread over the world. Although a global phenomenon, the digital economy plays out in local economic, political, and regulatory contexts. The problems thus created by the digital economy may be approached differently depending on the context. This edited collection brings together leading scholars based in Asia to detail how their respective jurisdictions respond to the competition law problems evolving out of the deployment of the digital economy. This book is timely, because it will show to what extent new competition law regimes or those with a history of lax enforcement can respond to these new developments in the economy. Academics in law and business strategies with an interest in competition law, both in Asia and more broadly, will find the insights in this edited collection invaluable. Further, this volume will be a key resource for scholars, practitioners and students.

- Abstract
This book presents the first-ever comprehensive assessment of whether national laws enacted in 50 countries across Asia, Africa, and Latin America comply with international standards on expropriation, compensation, and resettlement as established in Section 16 of the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries, and Forests in the Context of National Food Security (VGGTs). The VGGTs are supported by the international consensus of governments, civil society, and the private sector. The UN Committee on World Food Security officially endorsed the VGGTs in 2012. This book uses indicators to compare laws with international standards. Illustrative examples of how expropriation laws are implemented in practice, including a case study of Nigeria's Lekki Free Trade Zone expropriation case, are provided to highlight the importance of adopting international standards. Along with establishing a benchmark for measuring progress that indicates most of the national laws assessed do not comply with international standards, this book offers a set of recommended legal reforms that support the adoption of international standards in national laws.

- Abstract
Redefining Diversity and Dynamics of Natural Resources Management in Asia, Volumes 1-4 brings together scientific research and policy issues across various topographical area in Asia to provide a comprehensive overview of the issues facing the region. Sustainable Natural Resources Management in Dynamic Southeast Asia, Volume 1, pulls together regional experts in the field to look specifically at sustainability issues across the region, to see what has been implemented, what the impacts have been, and what other options are available. In the race to be a developed region, many Southeast Asian countries have foregone natural resources through haphazard use. As a result, the people are faced with numerous environmental challenges, particularly deforestation and forest degradation, biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation, reduction in soil quality, and decreases in the quantity of available water. Community-based forest management is the involvement of local communities in the protection, conservation and management of public forests to prevent degradation through sustainable practices while still responding to the basic social and economic needs of local populations. When the people who depend on forest resources for their livelihoods are jointly responsible for managing and protecting them, they tend to do so in a more sustainable manner by focusing on the long-term benefits rather than the immediate short-term gains. However, when tenure rights are weak, unclear, or insecure, or offer limited benefits, people are incited in extracting more immediate benefits, resulting in suboptimal forest management and the reduction of carbon stocks. - Features case studies that cover issues such as rising levels of deforestation, forest degradation, regional food security, ecosystem degradation, biodiversity loss, conflicts over natural resource use, water management issues, and impacts on local communities - Includes contributions from local researchers who are dealing with these issues first hand, and on a daily basis - Includes a comparative review on REDD+ implementation in different communities - Focuses on sustainability issues across the region

- Abstract
The debate on indigenous rights has revealed some serious difficulties for current international law, posed mainly by different understandings of important concepts. This book explores the extent to which indigenous claims, as recorded in the United Nations forums, can be accommodated by international law. By doing so, it also highlights how the indigenous debate has stretched the contours and ultimately evolved international human rights standards. The book first reflects on the international law responses to the theoretical arguments on cultural membership. After a comprehensive analysis of the existing instruments on indigenous rights, the discussion turns to self-determination. Different views are assessed and a fresh perspective on the right to self-determination is outlined. Ultimately, the author refuses to shy away from difficult questions and challenging issues and offers a comprehensive discussion of indigenous rights and their contribution to international law.
