This book —the first of a two-volume monograph— seeks to unify the hitherto perceived-as-disparate foundations of psychology and artificial intelligence. It does this by replacing their constitutive notions with a novel common one: noémon system. The ensued Theory of Noémon Systems is developed in terms of an interdisciplinary, language- based, axiomatic approach. The first volume details the development of the foundations of the theory and expounds ramifications for cognitive science and AI including novel solutions to the AGI debate and Darwin's mental gap issue, while offering the first complete definition of AI. The book concurrently explores the similarities and differences between humans and AI/robot systems with respect to the evolution-dependent phenomena of representation, thinking, understanding and communication. They feel they do not have time for it, believe it is not worth the effort, find it irrelevant or emotionally draining, or do not trust the media, among other reasons. Why and how do people circumvent news? Which groups are more and less reluctant to follow the news? In what ways is news avoidance a problem—for individuals, for the news industry, for society—and how can it be addressed?This groundbreaking book explains why and how so many people consume little or no news despite unprecedented abundance and ease of access. Drawing on interviews in Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States as well as extensive survey data, Avoiding the News examines how people who tune out traditional media get information and explores their “folk theories” about how news organizations work. Based on the original 1951 edition by Canadian professor and author of seminal works on media, communication theory, and Canadian economic history, Harold A. Innis (d. 1952). Innis explores the role of media in shaping the culture and development of civilizations. He argued that a balance between oral and written forms of communication contributed to the flourishing of Greek civilization in the 5th century BC. Das Thema Kommunikation war oft nicht das Zentrum. Viele Texte entstanden ursprünglich auch in interdisziplinären Kolloquien. Die Arbeiten hier zusammenzufügen entspringt der Absicht, eine vorher teilweise latente Sinnlinie freizulegen. Man könnte von einer Transformation von Publikationen in Spolien sprechen. This handbook fills a substantial gap in the international academic literature on animation at large, on music studies, and on the aural dimensions of Japanese animation more specifically. It offers a unique contribution at the intersection between music and popular culture studies on the one hand, and research on Japanese animated productions (often called ‘anime') as popular art forms and formats of entertainment, on the other. The book is designed as a reference work consisting of an organic sequence of theory-grounded essays on the development of music, sounds, and voices in Japanese animation for cinema and television since the 1930s. Each chapter deals with a phase of this history, focusing on composers and performers, films, series, and genres used in the soundtracks for animations made in Japan. The chapters also offer valuable interviews with prominent figures of music in Japanese animation, as well as chapter boxes clarifying specific aspects.

This book presents the restoration of rural mobile cinema network in the Great Triangle region at the conjunction of Yunnan, Sichuan, and Tibet in China in the new century, which has added a new chapter to the long-standing complex relationship between cinema and social change. Based on five years of multi-sited fieldwork, abundant interviews and oral history narratives, this work shows the entanglement of the State, the projectionists and local film viewers in the historical and social context in a holistic analytic framework. By using the key concept of “being present” to examine the tangling relations between the actors in mobile cinema as social practice, the work argues that mobile cinema and contemporary Chinese society are mutually constructed in both textual and practical level.

Die Frage ist, weshalb kommunikatives Handeln auch ohne Gewalt und Herrschaft Macht haben kann. Eine Antwort auf diese Frage hat die Soziologie bislang noch nicht geben können. Hier wird eine Antwort entworfen, indem gezeigt wird, dass und wie alltägliche Kommunikationsmacht sich im kommunikativen Mit- und Gegeneinander erst aufbauen muss, um dann wirken zu können. Dabei kommen der Beziehung der Menschen zueinander, deren gegenseitige Anerkennung und die daraus folgenden Auswirkungen auf die Identität der Beteiligten eine besondere Bedeutung zu. Ein solches Verständnis der alltäglichen Macht von kommunikativem Handeln kann dabei auch helfen zu verstehen, wann und unter welchen Bedingungen Kommunikation in den privaten und öffentlichen (digitalen) Medien wirksam sein kann. Ein Verständnis kann jedoch auch dabei helfen, selbst über kommunikatives Handeln Wirkung zu erzielen bzw. sich gegen kommunikative Zumutungen zu wehren.

Corona as a staged instrument of oppression, secretly kept vaccination deaths or politicians drinking children's blood: at the latest since the outbreak of the Covid 19 pandemic, conspiracy ideologies are booming and harm social peace and democratic will formation through their dogmatism. So-called conspiracy theories generate systematic distrust of legitimate political institutions and can contribute to social polarization, dangerous populism and extremist escalation. Conspiracy ideologies have always been a topic in movies and television series, as they have always dealt with the relationship between reality and illusion, truth and fiction, reality and dream, sense and madness through their cinematic means. Series and films not only serve as a discursive space for social self-understanding, but also, through their complex narratives, constellations of characters and aesthetics, offer catchy explanations for the emergence and spread of conspiracy narratives. At the same time, theymake suggestions, some of them astonishingly concrete, for dealing with such collective delusions. What can we learn from the fictional worlds of series and films for dealing with this very real contemporary phenomenon?

In dieser Studie geht es um junge Menschen, die zur ersten Generation gehören, die in eine hochgradig digitalisierte und mediatisierte Welt hinein sozialisiert wird. Es geht darum zu erforschen, wie die Nutzung digitaler Medien mit den ihnen inhärenten Strukturen sich auf adoleszente Individuation auswirkt. Digitale Medien bieten den Jugendlichen mittels Präsenz und Form sowohl neuartige Möglichkeiten der Individuierung als auch Herausforderungen und Hemmnisse. Man könnte also sagen, sie bieten Adoleszenten einen medial erweiterten Möglichkeitsraum, der mit dem analogen psychosozialen Möglichkeitsraum der Adoleszenz auf je individuelle Weise verschwimmt und dessen mediale Form einerseits auf produktive und andererseits auch auf kontraproduktive Weise in den Prozess der adoleszenten Individuierung eingreifen kann. Digitale Medien können somit zur „Entstehung des Neuen in der Adoleszenz“ beitragen. Es werden typische Aneignungsweisen digitaler Medien im Prozess adoleszenter Individuierung rekonstruiert. Dabei wird den Fragen nachgegangen, inwieweit emanzipierende Potenziale für die Bewältigung adoleszenter Entwicklungsaufgaben entstehen können und ob auch ein Zusammenhang mit einer den Jugendlichen immer wieder zugeschriebenen Konformität bestehen kann.

This book examines the relationship between media and medicine. Drawing on insights from anthropology, linguistics, and media studies, it considers the fundamental role of news coverage in constructing wider cultural understandings of health and disease. This accessible guide through audience studies'histories outlines a contemporary Cultural Studies approach to audiences for the digital age. This book is not a survey of all existing audience research. Instead, its chapters survey parts of the field in order to draw some ‘through-lines'from older traditions to contemporary debates, giving students a ‘way in'to thinking about the current landscape from an ‘audience-sensitive'perspective. In order to do this, the book utilises a series of verbs to organise and cut a path through audience research and register its ongoing relevance today. These verbs are: audience, anchor, mean, feel and work. The list is not exhaustive and the reader is invited to think about what verbs they would add or change throughout the book. The effects of social media can be observed particularly in relation to the religious commitment and religious practices of young people - who today are summarized under terms such as'internet generation','media generation'or'digital natives'. Online media exert a major influence on their lives, their understanding of the world, their religious orientations and actions. Their identity constructions, their cultural and religious orientations are closely intertwined with social media. This is precisely where the present study started with the question of what subjective consequences interaction on the social web has for the religious orientations, practices and self-conceptions of Muslim young people in Austria. The focus was on the connections between media use, media images of Islam and lived religiosity. On the one hand, the results show that the use of social media creates objective spaces of opportunity that can go hand in hand with an expansion of individual scope for action, whereby religious authority is increasingly being questioned. On the other hand, the study also shows that the use of digital media can also lead to a narrowing of individual religious orientations.

Cultural, social and economic production is always medially constituted, since it is formed through processing, storage and transmission of certain data or materials. This is why the concept of mediality can be used to stress the performative character of all culture, whose multiplicity of techniques conversely interacts with the mediality in question. The contributors focus on a given cultural medium's genuine structure as a particular deployment without falling into some kind of hardware determinism, therefore considering culture beyond textuality.

Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund werden in der deutschen Berichterstattung zahlreichen Analysen zufolge überproportional in Problemzusammenhängen dargestellt. Um das zu ändern, gibt es etliche Aktivitäten wie Preisverleihungen für diversitätssensible Berichte oder Analysen der medialen Repräsentation von MigrantInnen. Kaum berücksichtigt wird dabei jedoch die Sensibilisierung von JournalistInnen für die kulturelle Diversität, obwohl sie 2007 im Nationalen Integrationsplan gefordert wurde. Außerdem legt das Gros der bisherigen Aktivitäten eine Vorstellung von homogenen (National-)Kulturen zugrunde. So untersuchen viele Inhaltsanalysen die Berichterstattung über „die Migranten“ (v.a. „die Türken“) und vernachlässigen dabei verschiedene Diversitätskategorien (z.B. Geschlecht, Alter). Derlei Homogenisierungen verfestigen normative Vorstellungen von Differenz. Daher analysiert der vorliegende Band,, welchen Beitrag repräsentationskritische ethnologische Perspektiven auf Kultur, Diversitätund Ausgrenzung zu der Auseinandersetzung mit Diversity im Journalismus leisten können. In der Zeit des wirtschaftlichen Aufschwungs Deutschlands nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg waren die Wochenschauen im Vorprogramm jeder Kinovorstellung eine bedeutende Informationsquelle. Mit eindrucksvollen Bildern auf einer großen Leinwand – begleitet von gesprochenem Kommentar, Musik und Geräusch – gaben sie Orientierung und prägten die Erinnerung. In zahlreichen dokumentarischen Film- und Fernsehformaten werden bis heute einzelne Bilder oder kurze Sequenzen aus der Kino-Wochenschau als historische Belege, als Illustrationen oder zur Dramatisierung verwendet. Die außergewöhnlichen Prinzipien der Informationsvermittlung kommen dabei jedoch nicht mehr zur Geltung. Um das Publikum zu erreichen, war damals eine Mischung aus informativen Berichten und unterhaltenden Beiträgen unerlässlich. Die in diesem Buch vorgenommenen Fallanalysen spiegeln elementare Themenbereiche der Zeit des wirtschaftlichen Aufschwungs beider deutscher Staaten (1950-1965) wider. Dieses Buch untersucht die Chancen und Risiken von Social Media im Kontext der Streitkräfte aus einer internationalen, sozialwissenschaftlichen Perspektive. Es erörtert die Auswirkungen sozialer Medien auf den Alltag von Militärangehörigen und analysiert, inwieweit soziale Medien deren Leistung beeinflussen, sei es als Ablenkung oder als Quelle wahrgenommener Wertschätzung. Umgekehrt können die sozialen Medien den Militärangehörigen eine Stimme verleihen und ihnen ermöglichen, sich öffentlich Gehör zu verschaffen. Da Diskussionen in sozialen Medien nur begrenzt kontrollierbar sind, verändert der Kontext, in dem die Streitkräfte diskutiert werden, ihren Einflussbereich und führt möglicherweise zu einem Kontrollverlust. Ein extremes Beispiel hierfür ist die Nutzung sozialer Medien als Instrument zur strategischen Verbreitung von Fehlinformationen, um die öffentliche Meinung zu beeinflussen und die nationale Sicherheit zu gefährden. Darüber hinaus führt die Nutzung sozialer Medien zur Demoralisierung von Gegnern oder zur Beeinträchtigung ihrer Glaubwürdigkeit dazu, dass soziale Medien als Cyberwaffe betrachtet werden, die Politik und militärische Aktivitäten beeinflusst.

Between 1880 and 1920, newspapers, magazines, and journals figured as the most important media for the public discussion of current events, as central nodes for the circulation of mass entertainments, and as windows into bustling art scenes. Periodicals thus presented themselves as crucial media for the negotiation and implementation of cultural modernization processes. Modernity and the Periodical Press explores this privileged role of the periodical press and focuses in particular on the often-neglected intersections between mass print culture and the practices of literary and artistic avant-gardes.
