In agricultural lands, we should aim for a balance between productivity and conserving native species. We may wish to revegetate selected areas with local flora, or experiment with species from other areas. Species in similar latitudes between east and west, that have been isolated for some considerable time from each other, often have useful but untested properties that can be exploited. In southern Australia, trials in the exchange of species between east and west have shown that non-endemics can flourish, especially some Western Australian ornamentals and salt-tolerant species which have so far been tested in the east. It is important to know their full potential. When considering what are the best species to plant there is a paucity of readily available information to help the land manager select the most suitable species. This Glove Box Guide provides a timely reference to assist people to make better decisions when planning new tree and shrub plantings. Recognition of the more important plant species is fundamental to the management of livestock enterprises and conservation of natural resources in western New South Wales. A major reference work, Plants of Western New South Wales by G.M. Cunningham, W.E. Mulham, P.L. Milthorpe and J.H. Leigh, was published in 1981. That book has proved to be of enduring value to pastoralists and many others with an interest in the management of semi-arid and arid rangelands. The first edition of The Glove Box Guide to Plants of the NSW Rangelands, published in 1998, was produced in response to a need expressed by both landholders and agency staff for a plant identification booklet that included the common and important species, was easy to use, and portable enough to fit in the ‘glove box'or on the bike. It aimed to present the information most commonly requested by pastoralists about rangeland plants, much of it derived from Plants of Western New South Wales, and 127 of the more common and important species for pastoral management were included. The ‘Glove Box Guide'proved popular with both pastoralists and the general public, so much so that it has been reprinted to supply the continuing demand. The text is largely unchanged from the original. We hope that it will continue to be a source of useful information for those who manage or take pleasure in the rangelands of western NSW.

Metabolitos secundarios, actividad biológica y etnobotánica de plantas de Santa Marta es una obra que reúne aspectos relacionados con la química de productos naturales vegetales de especies de la ciudad de Santa Marta (Magdalena). Se resaltan el tipo y la diversidad estructural de los metabolitos secundarios y la actividad biológica, producto del análisis de resultados reportados de los diferentes bioensayos. También se incluye la predicción de actividad biológica utilizando la herramienta PASS (predicción de espectros de actividad para sustancias biológicamente activa) de algunos de los metabolitos comunes. Se menciona igualmente el uso en medicina folclórica, a nivel mundial, de algunas especies de Santa Marta, relacionado en algunos casos con la actividad biológica reportada en la literatura científica. Las especies se presentan en el libro en orden alfabético por familia y se muestran resultados de ensayos biológicos de fracciones o extractos totales. Asimismo, se podrán encontrar esquemas y actividades de aprendizaje, además de una guía general para el uso del software PASS Online-Way2Drug, con la finalidad de motivar el desarrollo del aprendizaje autónomo o de competencias académicas.

The history of aroma and fragrance dates back through several ages and civilizations. The sagacity of smell plays a remarkable role for human beings to recognize food. Best fruits can be judged when they are ripe and fit for consumption emitting lovely smell or aroma. The same attribute from flowers attracts insects leading to cross-pollination. India has enjoyed a paramount place in the fabrication of quality perfumes and aromatics since the prehistoric era. The celebrated Chinese voyager Fa-Hien described India as the land of aromatic plants. Indian cities like Delhi, Agra, Kannauj, Lucknow, Jaunpur, Ghazipur, Aligarh, Bharatpur, Mysore, and Hyderabad emerged as centers of national and international trade in perfumery and other aromatic compounds, and were known for their quality across Asia, Europe and Africa. Aromatic plants precisely possess odorous volatile substances in root, wood, bark, stem, foliage, flower and fruit. The typical aroma is due to an assortment of composite chemical compounds. At present, information on the chemistry and properties of essential oils of only about 500 aromatic plants species is known in some detail out of a total of about 1500. Of these, about 50 species find use as commercial source of essential oils and aroma chemicals. It is realized now that perfumes are not the essentials of sumptuousness as they were in the past. It has given birth to new streams of medicinal therapy, aromatherapy, involving the use of essential oils and aromatics derived from plants to treat diseases. Essential oils are also reported to be better than antibiotics due to their safety and broad-spectrum activity. Natural essential oils are also potentially safe insecticides. The essential oil obtained from Acorus calamus having ß-asarone as an active principle produces sterility among a variety of insects of either sex. It has, therefore, been found very useful and secure for the storage of food grains. However, there is still very inadequate research for the cultivation of aromatic crops and extraction of essential oils across the globe. This book has been designed to highlight the associated issues of aromatic plants including the aspects of their classification, importance, uses and applications for human wellbeing, botany, agrotechniques, major bioactive constituents, post-harvest extraction, chemistry and biochemistry of aroma compounds along with an informative modern global research on these plants throughout the world. I hope this book will cater the scholastic services, reward diverse professionals and stakeholders, and serve as an informative handbook for theoretical as well as practical purposes.

The scientific understanding of arthropod phylogeny and evolution has changed significantly in recent decades. One of the most momentous alterations involved crustaceans, which are not a monophyletc group, but are part of a larger group along with insects: Pancrustacea. The old ideas surrounding crustacean evolution have served scientists well for many years; it is now time to turn toward new research by embracing the results derived from investigations conducted largely within this century. For example, new definitions have arisen from sources across several fields of study, and Frederick R. Schram and Stefan Koenemann have created a book that explores paleobiodiversity and the diversity of modern body plans. Developments within ontogenetic studies continue to generate remarkable insights into crustaceomorph evolution in regard to patterns of embryology and a revolution in the application of development genetics. Phylogeny techniques of analysis and new sources of data derived from molecular sequencing and genetic studies have forced scientists to consider new hypotheses concerning the interrelationships of all the pancrustaceans, both the crustaceomorphs and Hexapoda.
