Search

Unveiling the emergence and prevalence of massive/bright galaxies during the epoch of reionization and beyond, within the first 600 million years of the Universe, stands as a pivotal pursuit in astronomy. Remarkable progress has been made by JWST in identifying an immense population of bright galaxies, which hints at exceptionally efficient galaxy assembly processes. However, the underlying physical mechanisms propelling their rapid growth remain unclear. With this in mind, millimeter and submillimeter-wave spectroscopic observations of redshifted far-infrared spectral lines, particularly the [O III] 88 micron and [C II] 158 micron lines, offers a crucial pathway to address this fundamental query. To this end, we develop a dual-polarization sideband-separating superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) mixer receiver, FINER, for the Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT) situated in Mexico. Harnessing advancements from ALMA's wideband sensitivity upgrade (WSU) technology, FINER covers radio frequencies spanning 120-360 GHz, delivering an instantaneous intermediate frequency (IF) of 3-21 GHz per sideband per polarization, which is followed by a set of 10.24 GHz-wide digital spectrometers. At 40% of ALMA's light-collecting area, the LMT's similar atmospheric transmittance and FINER's 5 times wider bandwidth compared to ALMA culminate in an unparalleled spectral scanning capability in the northern hemisphere, paving the way for finer spectral-resolution detection of distant galaxies., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, and 3 tables. The first public 0.9-4.4{\mu}m NIRCam images of the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) Time Domain Field (TDF) uncovered galaxies displaying point-source features in their cores as seen in the longer wavelength filters. We visually identified a sample of 66 galaxies (~1 galaxy per arcmin2) with point-like cores and have modeled their two-dimensional light profiles with GalFit, identifying 16 galactic nuclei with measurable point-source components. GalFit suggests the visual sample is a mix of both compact stellar bulge and point-source galaxy cores. This core classification is complemented by spectral energy distribution (SED) modeling to infer the sample's active galactic nucleus (AGN) and host-galaxy parameters. For galaxies with measurable point-source components, the median fractional AGN contribution to their 0.1-30.0{\mu}m flux is 0.44, and 14/16 are color-classified AGN. We conclude that near-infrared point-source galaxy cores are signatures of AGN. In addition, we define an automated sample-selection criterion to identify these point-source features. These criteria can be used in other extant and future NIRCam images to streamline the search for galaxies with unresolved IR-luminous AGN. We present a new parametric lens model for the G165.7+67.0 galaxy cluster, which was discovered with $Planck$ through its bright submillimeter flux, originating from a pair of extraordinary dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) at $z\approx 2.2$. Using JWST and interferometric mm/radio observations, we characterize the intrinsic physical properties of the DSFGs, which are separated by only $\sim 1^{\prime\prime}$ (8 kpc) and a velocity difference $\Delta V \lesssim 600~{\rm km}~{\rm s}^{-1}$ in the source plane, and thus likely undergoing a major merger. Boasting intrinsic star formation rates ${\rm SFR}_{\rm IR} = 320 \pm 70$ and $400 \pm 80~ M_\odot~{\rm yr}^{-1}$, stellar masses ${\rm log}[M_\star/M_\odot] = 10.2 \pm 0.1$ and $10.3 \pm 0.1$, and dust attenuations $A_V = 1.5 \pm 0.3$ and $1.2 \pm 0.3$, they are remarkably similar objects. We perform spatially-resolved pixel-by-pixel SED fitting using rest-frame near-UV to near-IR imaging from JWST/NIRCam for both galaxies, resolving some stellar structures down to 100 pc scales. Based on their resolved specific SFRs and $UVJ$ colors, both DSFGs are experiencing significant galaxy-scale star formation events. If they are indeed interacting gravitationally, this strong starburst could be the hallmark of gas that has been disrupted by an initial close passage. In contrast, the host galaxy of the recently discovered triply-imaged SN H0pe has a much lower SFR than the DSFGs, and we present evidence for the onset of inside-out quenching and large column densities of dust even in regions of low specific SFR. Based on the intrinsic SFRs of the DSFGs inferred from UV through FIR SED modeling, this pair of objects alone is predicted to yield an observable $1.1 \pm 0.2~{\rm CCSNe~yr}^{-1}$, making this cluster field ripe for continued monitoring., Comment: 47 pages, 21 figures, 5 tables. Hyper-luminous infrared galaxies (HyLIRGs) are the most extreme star-forming systems observed in the early Universe, and their properties still elude comprehensive understanding. We have undertaken a large XMM-Newton observing program to probe the total accreting black hole population in three HyLIRGs at z = 2.12, 3.25, and 3.55, gravitationally lensed by foreground galaxies. Selected from the Planck All-Sky Survey to Analyze Gravitationally-lensed Extreme Starbursts (PASSAGES), these HyLIRGs have apparent infrared luminosities > E14 Lsun. Our observations revealed X-ray emission in each of them. PJ1336+49 appears to be dominated by high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs). Remarkably, the luminosity of this non-AGN X-ray emission exceeds by a factor of about three the value obtained by calibration with local galaxies with much lower star formation rates. This enhanced X-ray emission most likely highlights the efficacy of dynamical HMXB production within compact clusters, which is an important mode of star formation in HyLIRGs. The remaining two (PJ0116-24 and PJ1053+60) morphologically and spectrally exhibit a compact X-ray component in addition to the extended non-AGN X-ray emission, indicating the presence of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs). The AGN appears to be centrally located in the reconstructed source plane images of PJ0116-24, which manifests its star-forming activity predominantly within an extended galactic disk. In contrast, the AGN in the field of PJ1053+60 is projected 60 kpc away from the extreme star-forming galaxy and could be ejected from it. A Type Ia supernova (SN) at $z=1.78$ was discovered in James Webb Space Telescope Near Infrared Camera imaging of the galaxy cluster PLCK G165.7+67.0 (G165; $z = 0.35$). The SN is situated 1.5-2 kpc from the host-galaxy nucleus and appears in three different locations as a result of gravitational lensing by G165. These data can yield a value for Hubble's constant using time delays from this multiply-imaged SN Ia that we call "SN H0pe." Over the cluster, we identified 21 image multiplicities, confirmed five of them using the Near-Infrared Spectrograph, and constructed a new lens model that gives a total mass within 600 kpc of ($2.6 \pm 0.3) \times 10^{14}$ $M_{\odot}$. The photometry uncovered a galaxy overdensity coincident with the SN host galaxy. NIRSpec confirmed six member galaxies, four of which surround the SN host galaxy with relative velocity $\lesssim$900 km s$^{-1}$ and projected physical extent $\lesssim$33 kpc. This compact galaxy group is dominated by the SN host galaxy, which has a stellar mass of $(5.0 \pm 0.1) \times 10^{11}$ $M_{\odot}$. The group members have specific star-formation rates of 2-260 Gyr$^{-1}$ derived from the H$\alpha$-line fluxes corrected for stellar absorption, dust extinction, and slit losses. Another group centered on a strongly-lensed dusty star forming galaxy is at $z=2.24$. The total (unobscured and obscured) SFR of this second galaxy group is estimated to be ($\gtrsim$100 $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$), which translates to a supernova rate of $\sim$1 SNe yr$^{-1}$, suggesting that regular monitoring of this cluster may yield additional SNe., Comment: 29 pages, Accepted to ApJ on November 24, 2023

Gradients in the mass-to-light ratio of distant galaxies impede our ability to characterize their size and compactness. The long-wavelength filters of $JWST$'s NIRCam offer a significant step forward. For galaxies at Cosmic Noon ($z\sim2$), this regime corresponds to the rest-frame near-infrared, which is less biased towards young stars and captures emission from the bulk of a galaxy's stellar population. We present an initial analysis of an extraordinary lensed dusty star-forming galaxy (DSFG) at $z=2.3$ behind the $El~Gordo$ cluster ($z=0.87$), named $El~Anzuelo$ ("The Fishhook") after its partial Einstein-ring morphology. The FUV-NIR SED suggests an intrinsic star formation rate of $81^{+7}_{-2}~M_\odot~{\rm yr}^{-1}$ and dust attenuation $A_V\approx 1.6$, in line with other DSFGs on the star-forming main sequence. We develop a parametric lens model to reconstruct the source-plane structure of dust imaged by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, far-UV to optical light from $Hubble$, and near-IR imaging with 8 filters of $JWST$/NIRCam, as part of the Prime Extragalactic Areas for Reionization and Lensing Science (PEARLS) program. The source-plane half-light radius is remarkably consistent from $\sim 1-4.5~\mu$m, despite a clear color gradient where the inferred galaxy center is redder than the outskirts. We interpret this to be the result of both a radially-decreasing gradient in attenuation and substantial spatial offsets between UV- and IR-emitting components. A spatial decomposition of the SED reveals modestly suppressed star formation in the inner kiloparsec, which suggests that we are witnessing the early stages of inside-out quenching., Comment: 29 pages, 11 figures, 5 tables. The massive galaxy cluster El Gordo (z=0.87) imprints multitudes of gravitationally lensed arcs onto James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) images. Eight bands of NIRCam imaging were obtained in the ``Prime Extragalactic Areas for Reionization and Lensing Science'' (``PEARLS'') program. PSF-matched photometry across Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and NIRCam filters supplies new photometric redshifts. A new light-traces-mass lens model based on 56 image multiplicities identifies the two mass peaks and yields a mass estimate within 500 kpc of ~(7.0 +/- 0.30) x 10^14 Msun. A search for substructure in the 140 cluster members with spectroscopic redshifts confirms the two main mass components. The southeastern mass peak that contains the BCG is more tightly bound than the northwestern one. The virial mass within 1.7 Mpc is (5.1 +/- 0.60) x 10^14 Msun, lower than the lensing mass. A significant transverse velocity component could mean the virial mass is underestimated. We contribute one new member to the previously known z=4.32 galaxy group. Intrinsic (delensed) positions of the five secure group members span a physical extent of ~60 kpc. Thirteen additional candidates selected by spectroscopic/photometric constraints are small and faint with a mean intrinsic luminosity ~2.2 mag fainter than L*. NIRCam imaging admits a fairly wide range of brightnesses and morphologies for the group members, suggesting a more diverse galaxy population in this galaxy overdensity., Comment: 24 pages, accepted by ApJ

The PASSAGES ($Planck$ All-Sky Survey to Analyze Gravitationally-lensed Extreme Starbursts) collaboration has recently defined a sample of 30 gravitationally-lensed dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs). These rare, submillimeter-selected objects enable high-resolution views of the most extreme sites of star formation in galaxies at Cosmic Noon. Here, we present the first major compilation of strong lensing analyses using LENSTOOL for PASSAGES, including 15 objects spanning $z=1.1-3.3$, using complementary information from $0.6^{\prime\prime}$-resolution 1 mm Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and $0.4^{\prime\prime}$ 5 cm Jansky Very Large Array continuum imaging, in tandem with 1.6$\mu$m $Hubble$ and optical imaging with Gemini-S. Magnifications range from $\mu = 2 - 28$ (median $\mu=7$), yielding intrinsic infrared luminosities of $L_{\rm IR} = 0.2 - 5.9 \times 10^{13}~L_\odot$ (median ${1.4}\times 10^{13}~L_\odot$) and inferred star formation rates of $170-6300~M_\odot~{\rm yr}^{-1}$ (median $1500~M_\odot~{\rm yr}^{-1}$). These results suggest that the PASSAGES objects comprise some of the most extreme known starbursts, rivaling the luminosities of even the brightest unlensed objects, further amplified by lensing. The intrinsic sizes of far-infrared continuum regions are large ($R_{\rm e} = {1.7 - 4.3}$ kpc; median $3.0$ kpc) but consistent with $L_{\rm IR}-R_{\rm e}$ scaling relations for $z>1$ DSFGs, suggesting a widespread spatial distribution of star formation. With modestly-high angular resolution, we explore if these objects might be maximal starbursts. Instead of approaching Eddington-limited surface densities, above which radiation pressure will disrupt further star formation, they are safely sub-Eddington -- at least on global, galaxy-integrated scales., Comment: 48 pages, 12 figures, 6 tables. We report the ALMA observation of a $z\gtrsim10$ galaxy candidate (GHZ1) discovered from the GLASS-JWST Early Release Science Program. We report the detection of an ionized gas outflow from an $X$-ray active galactic nucleus (AGN) hosted in a massive quiescent galaxy in a protocluster at $z=3.09$ (J221737.29+001823.4). It is a type-2 QSO with broad ($W_{80}>1000$ km s$^{-1}$) and strong ($\log (L_{\rm [OIII]}$ / erg s$^{-1})\approx43.4$) [O {\footnotesize III}]$\lambda\lambda$4959,5007 emission lines detected by slit spectroscopy in three-position angles using Multi-Object Infra-Red Camera and Spectrograph (MOIRCS) on the Subaru telescope and the Multi-Object Spectrometer For Infra-Red Exploration (MOSFIRE) on the Keck-I telescope. In the all slit directions, [O {\footnotesize III}] emission is extended to $\sim15$ physical kpc and indicates a powerful outflow spreading over the host galaxy. The inferred ionized gas mass outflow rate is $\rm 22\pm3~M_{\odot}~yr^{-1}$. Although it is a radio source, according to the line diagnostics using H$\beta$, [O {\footnotesize II}], and [O {\footnotesize III}], photoionization by the central QSO is likely the dominant ionization mechanism rather than shocks caused by radio jets. On the other hand, the spectral energy distribution of the host galaxy is well characterized as a quiescent galaxy that has shut down star formation by several hundred Myr ago. Our results suggest a scenario that QSOs are powered after the shut-down of the star formation and help to complete the quenching of massive quiescent galaxies at high redshift., Comment: 18 pages 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The Planck All-Sky Survey to Analyze Gravitationally-lensed Extreme Starbursts (PASSAGES) project aims to identify a population of extremely luminous galaxies using the Planck All-Sky Survey and to explore the nature of their gas fuelling, induced starburst, and the resulting feedback that shape their evolution. Here, we report the identification of 22 high redshift luminous dusty star forming galaxies (DSFGs) at $z=1.1-3.3$ drawn from a candidate list constructed using the Planck Catalog of Compact Sources (PCCS) and WISE All-Sky Survey. They are confirmed through follow-up dust continuum imaging and CO spectroscopy using AzTEC and the Redshift Search Receiver (RSR) on the Large Millimeter Telescope Alfonso Serrano (LMT). Their apparent IR luminosities span $(0.1-3.1)\times 10^{14} L_\odot$ (median of $1.2\times10^{14}L_\odot$), making them some of the most luminous galaxies found so far. They are also some of the rarest objects in the sky with a source density of $\lesssim0.01$ deg$^{-2}$. Our Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) 1.1 mm continuum observations with $\theta$ $\approx$ 0.4" resolution show clear ring or arc morphologies characteristic of strong lensing. Their lensing-corrected luminosity of $L_{\rm IR}\gtrsim 10^{13}L_\odot$ ($SFR\gtrsim10^3 M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$) indicates that they are the magnified versions of the most intrinsically luminous DSFGs found at these redshifts. Our spectral energy distribution (SED) analysis finds little detectable AGN activity despite their enormous luminosity, and any AGN activity present must be extremely heavily obscured., Comment: Page count = 28. Observations of 12CO J=1-0 and HCN J=1-0 emission from NGC 5194 (M51) made with the 50~meter Large Millimeter Telescope and the SEQUOIA focal plane array are presented. Using the HCN to CO ratio, we examine the dense gas mass fraction over a range of environmental conditions within the galaxy. Within the disk, the dense gas mass fraction varies along spiral arms but the average value over all spiral arms is comparable to the mean value of interarm regions. We suggest that the near constant dense gas mass fraction throughout the disk arises from a population of density stratified, self gravitating molecular clouds and the required density threshold to detect each spectral line. The measured dense gas fraction significantly increases in the central bulge in response to the effective pressure, P_e, from the weight from the stellar and gas components. This pressure modifies the dynamical state of the molecular cloud population and possibly, the HCN emitting regions, in the central bulge from self-gravitating to diffuse configurations in which P_e is greater than the gravitational energy density of individual clouds. Diffuse molecular clouds comprise a significant fraction of the molecular gas mass in the central bulge, which may account for the measured sublinear relationships between the surface densities of the star formation rate and molecular and dense gas., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, 5 tables. We present a detailed study of the Planck-selected binary galaxy cluster PLCK G165.7+67.0 (G165; $z$=0.348). A multiband photometric catalog is generated that incorporates new imaging from the Large Binocular Telescope/Large Binocular Camera and Spitzer/IRAC to existing imaging. To cope with the different image characteristics, robust methods are applied in the extraction of the matched-aperture photometry. Photometric redshifts are estimated for 143 galaxies in the 4 arcmin$^{2}$ field of overlap covered by all these data. We confirm that strong lensing effects yield 30 images of 11 background galaxies, of which we contribute photometric redshift estimates for three image multiplicities. These constraints enable the construction of a revised lens model that confirms the bimodal structure, and from which we measure a mass of M$_{600 kpc}$=(2.36$\pm$0.23)$\times$10$^{14}$M$_{\odot}$. In parallel, new spectroscopy using MMT/Binospec and archival data contributes thirteen galaxies which meet our velocity and transverse radius criteria for cluster membership. The two cluster components have a pair-wise velocity of $\lessapprox$100 kms$^{-1}$, favoring an orientation in the plane of the sky with a transverse velocity of 100-1700 kms$^{-1}$. At the same time, the brightest cluster galaxy is offset in velocity from the systemic mean value. New LOFAR and VLA radio maps uncover the BCG and a large red galaxy in the northeastern side to be head-tail galaxies, suggesting that this component has already traversed southwestern side and is now exiting the cluster to the northeast., Comment: ApJ Volume 932, Number 2, 18 pages including 14 figures and 2 Tables

The 2mm Mapping Obscuration to Reionization with ALMA (MORA) Survey was designed to detect high redshift ($z\gtrsim4$), massive, dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs). Here we present two, likely high redshift sources, identified in the survey whose physical characteristics are consistent with a class of optical/near-infrared (OIR) invisible DSFGs found elsewhere in the literature. We first perform a rigorous analysis of all available photometric data to fit spectral energy distributions and estimate redshifts before deriving physical properties based on our findings. Our results suggest the two galaxies, called MORA-5 and MORA-9, represent two extremes of the "OIR-dark" class of DSFGs. MORA-5 ($z_{\rm phot}=4.3^{+1.5}_{-1.3}$) is a significantly more active starburst with a star-formation rate of 830$^{+340}_{-190}$M$_\odot$yr$^{-1}$ compared to MORA-9 ($z_{\rm phot}=4.3^{+1.3}_{-1.0}$) whose star-formation rate is a modest 200$^{+250}_{-60}$M$_\odot$yr$^{-1}$. Based on the stellar masses (M$_{\star}\approx10^{10-11}$M$_\odot$), space density ($n\sim(5\pm2)\times10^{-6}$Mpc$^{-3}$, which incorporates two other spectroscopically confirmed OIR-dark DSFGs in the MORA sample at $z=4.6$ and $z=5.9$), and gas depletion timescales ($<1$Gyr) of these sources, we find evidence supporting the theory that OIR-dark DSFGs are the progenitors of recently discovered $3

We present the 3 mm wavelength spectra of 28 local galaxy merger remnants obtained with the Large Millimeter Telescope. Fifteen molecular lines from 13 different molecular species and isotopologues were identified, and 21 out of 28 sources were detected in one or more molecular lines. On average, the line ratios of the dense gas tracers, such as HCN (1-0) and HCO$^{+}$(1-0), to $^{13}$CO (1-0) are 3-4 times higher in ultra/luminous infrared galaxies (U/LIRGs) than in non-LIRGs in our sample. These high line ratios could be explained by the deficiency of $^{13}$CO and high dense gas fractions suggested by high HCN (1-0)/$^{12}$CO (1-0) ratios. We calculate the IR-to-HCN (1-0) luminosity ratio as a proxy of the dense gas star formation efficiency. There is no correlation between the IR/HCN ratio and the IR luminosity, while the IR/HCN ratio varies from source to source (1.1-6.5) $\times 10^{3}$ $L_{\odot}$/(K km s$^{-1}$ pc$^{2}$). Compared with the control sample, we find that the average IR/HCN ratio of the merger remnants is higher by a factor of 2-3 than those of the early/mid-stage mergers and non-merging LIRGs, and it is comparable to that of the late-stage mergers. The IR-to-$^{12}$CO (1-0) ratios show a similar trend to the IR/HCN ratios. These results suggest that star formation efficiency is enhanced by the merging process and maintained at high levels even after the final coalescence. Dusty star-forming galaxies at high redshift (1 < z < 3) represent the most intense star-forming regions in the Universe. Key aspects to these processes are the gas heating and cooling mechanisms. Although it is well known that these galaxies are gas-rich, little is known about the gas excitation conditions. Here we examine these processes in a sample of 24 strongly lensed star-forming galaxies identified by the \textit{Planck} satellite (LPs) at z ~ 1.1 - 3.5. We analyze 162 CO rotational transitions (ranging from Jupper = 1 - 12) and 37 atomic carbon fine-structure lines ([CI]) in order to characterize the physical conditions of the gas in sample of LPs. We simultaneously fit the CO and [CI] lines, and the dust continuum emission, using two different non-LTE, radiative transfer models. The first model represents a two component gas density, while the second assumes a turbulence driven log-normal gas density distribution. These LPs are among the most gas-rich, infrared (IR) luminous galaxies ever observed ($\mu_{\rm L}$L$_{\rm IR(8-1000\mu m) } \sim 10^{13-14.6} $\Lsun; $< \mu_{\rm L}$M$_{\rm ISM}> = 2.7 \pm 1.2 \times 10^{12}$ \Msun, with $\mu_{\rm L} \sim 10-30$ the average lens magnification factor). Our results suggest that the turbulent ISM present in the LPs can be well-characterized by a high turbulent velocity dispersion ($<\Delta V_{\rm turb}> \sim 100 $ \kms) and gas kinetic temperature to dust temperature ratios $ \sim 2.5$, sustained on scales larger than a few kpc. We speculate that the average surface density of the molecular gas mass and IR luminosity $\Sigma_{\rm M_{\rm ISM}}$ $\sim 10^{3 - 4}$ \Msun pc$^{-2}$ and $\Sigma_{\rm L_{\rm IR}}$ $\sim 10^{11 - 12}$ \Lsun kpc$^{-2}$, arise from both stellar mechanical feedback and a steady momentum injection from the accretion of intergalactic gas., Comment: 54 pages, 18 figures. We present a large-scale survey of the central molecular zone (CMZ) of our Galaxy, as well as a monitoring program of Sgr A*, with the AzTEC/Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT) in the 1.1 mm continuum. Our 1.1 mm map covers the main body of the CMZ over a field of $1.6 \times 1.1$ deg$^2$ with an angular resolution of $10.5''$ and a depth of 15 mJy/beam. To account for the intensity loss due to the background removal process, we combine this map with lower resolution CSO/Bolocam and \textit{Planck}/HFI data to produce an effective full intensity 1.1 mm continuum map. With this map and existing \textit{Herschel} surveys, we have carried out a comprehensive analysis of the spectral energy distribution (SED) of dust in the CMZ. A key component of this analysis is the implementation of a model-based deconvolution approach, incorporating the Point Spread Functions (PSFs) of the different instruments, and hence recovering a significant amount of spatial information on angular scales larger than $10.5''$. The monitoring of Sgr A* was carried out as part of a worldwide, multi-wavelength campaign when the so-called G2 object was undergoing the pericenter passage around the massive black hole (MBH). Our preliminary results include 1) high-resolution maps of column density, temperature and dust spectral index across the CMZ; 2) a 1.1~mm light curve of Sgr A* showing an outburst of $140\%$ maximum amplitude on 9th May, 2014 but otherwise only stochastic variations of $10\%$ and no systematic long-term change, consistent with other observations., Comment: Accepted for publication by MNRAS

We report the detection of a non-corotating gas component in a bright unlensed submillimeter galaxy at z=4.3, COSMOS-AzTEC-1, hosting a compact starburst. ALMA 0.17 and 0.09 arcsec resolution observations of [CII] emission clearly demonstrate that the gas kinematics is characterized by an ordered rotation. After subtracting the best-fit model of a rotating disk, we kinematically identify two residual components in the channel maps. Both observing simulations and analysis of dirty images confirm that these two subcomponents are not artificially created by noise fluctuations and beam deconvolution. One of the two has a velocity offset of 200 km/s and a physical separation of 2 kpc from the primary disk and is located along the kinematic minor axis of disk rotation. We conclude that this gas component is falling into the galaxy from a direction perpendicular to the disk rotation. The accretion of such small non-corotating gas components could stimulate violent disk instability, driving radial gas inflows into the center of galaxies and leading to formation of in-situ clumps such as identified in dust continuum and CO. Hickson Compact Group (HCG) 16 is a prototypical compact group of galaxies, apparently in an intermediate stage of evolution, where its galaxies are losing gas to the intra-group medium (IGrM). The wide variety of ongoing process in HCG 16 make it an ideal case study for exploring which processes are likely to dominate the late stages of evolution in compact groups. In order to build a coherent picture of the evolution of this group we make use of the multi-wavelength data available, but focus particularly on HI as a tracer of interactions and evolutionary phase. We reprocess archival VLA L-band data of HCG 16 using the multi-scale CLEAN algorithm to accurately recover diffuse features. Despite the clear disruption of the HI component of HCG 16 we find that it is not globally HI deficient, even though HCG 16a and b have lost the majority of their HI and almost 50% of the group's HI is in the IGrM, including a 160 kpc long tail extending towards the SE. This study indicates that in the recent past (~1 Gyr) galaxies HCG 16a and b likely underwent major interactions that unbound gas without triggering significant star formation. This gas was then swept away by a high speed, close encounter with NGC 848. The starburst events HCG 16c and d have triggered galactic winds which, in the case of HCG 16d, appears to have disrupted its HI reservoir. The tidal features still connected to these galaxies indicate that more HI will soon be lost to the IGrM, while that which remains in the discs will likely be consumed by star formation episodes. This is expected to result in a collection of gas-poor galaxies embedded in a diffuse HI structure, which will gradually be evaporated by the UV background, resembling the final stage of the evolutionary model of compact groups. We present CO observations of 78 spiral galaxies in local merger pairs. These galaxies representa subsample of a Ks-band selected sample consisting of 88 close major-merger pairs (HKPAIRs), 44 spiral-spiral (S+S) pairs and 44 spiral-elliptical (S+E) pairs, with separation $<20 h^{-1}$ kpc and mass ratio <2.5. For all objects, the star formation rate (SFR) and dust mass were derived from HERSCHEL PACS and SPIRE data, and the atomic gas mass, MHI, from the Green Bank Telescope HI observations. The complete data set allows us to study the relation between the gas (atomic and molecular) mass, dust mass and SFR in merger galaxies. We derive the molecular gas fraction (MH2/M*), molecular-to-atomic gas mass ratio (MH2/MHI), gas-to-dust mass ratio and SFE (=SFR/MH2) and study their dependences on pair type (S+S compared to S+E), stellar mass and the presence of morphological interaction signs. We find an overall moderate enhancements (~2x) in both molecular gas fraction (MH2/M*), and molecular-to-atomic gas ratio (MH2/MHI) for star-forming galaxies in major-merger pairs compared to non-interacting comparison samples, whereas no enhancement was found for the SFE nor for the total gas mass fraction (MHI+MH2)/M*. When divided into S+S and S+E, low mass and high mass, and with and without interaction signs, there is a small difference in SFE, moderate difference in MH2/M*, and strong differences in MH2/MHI between subsamples. For MH2/MHI, the difference between S+S and S+E subsamples is 0.69+-0.16 dex and between pairs with and without interaction signs is 0.53+-0.18 dex. Together, our results suggest (1) star formation enhancement in close major-merger pairs occurs mainly in S+S pairs after the first close encounter (indicated by interaction signs) because the HI gas is compressed into star-forming molecular gas by the tidal torque; (2) this effect is much weakened in the S+E pairs., Comment: Accepted in A&A, 19 pages

We present the first results from the deep and wide 5 GHz radio observations of the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS)-North ($\sigma=3.5 \; \mu Jy \; beam^{-1}$, synthesized beam size $\theta =$ 1.47 arcsec $\times$ 1.42 arcsec, and 52 sources over 109 arcmin$^{2}$) and GOODS-South ($\sigma=3.0 \; \mu Jy \; beam^{-1}$, $\theta=$0.98 arcsec $\times$ 0.45 arcsec, and 88 sources over 190 arcmin$^{2}$) fields using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. We derive radio spectral indices {\alpha} between 1.4 and 5 GHz using the beam-matched images and show that the overall spectral index distribution is broad even when the measured noise and flux bias are considered. We also find a clustering of faint radio sources around $\alpha=0.8$, but only within $S_{5GHz} < 150 \; \mu Jy$. We demonstrate that the correct radio spectral index is important for deriving accurate rest frame radio power and analyzing the radio-FIR correlation, and adopting a single value of $\alpha=0.8$ leads to a significant scatter and a strong bias in the analysis of the radio-FIR correlation, resulting from the broad and asymmetric spectral index distribution. When characterized by specific star formation rates, the starburst population (58%) dominates the 5 GHz radio source population, and the quiescent galaxy population (30%) follows a distinct trend in spectral index distribution and the radio-FIR correlation. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) was revolutionary because of the extraordinary breadth and ambition of its optical imaging and spectroscopy. We argue that a 'sub-millimeter SDSS' - a sensitive large-area imaging+spectroscopic survey in the sub-mm window - will revolutionize our understanding of galaxy evolution in the early Universe. By detecting the thermal dust continuum emission and atomic and molecular line emission of galaxies out to z~10 it will be possible to measure the redshifts, star formation rates, dust and gas content of hundreds of thousands of high-z galaxies down to ~L*. Many of these galaxies will have counterparts visible in the deep optical imaging of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope. This 3D map of galaxy evolution will span the peak epoch of galaxy formation all the way back to cosmic dawn, measuring the co-evolution of the star formation rate density and molecular gas content of galaxies, tracking the production of metals and charting the growth of large-scale structure., Comment: Science White paper submitted to the Astro2020 Decadal Survey

We report detections of two 1.2 mm continuum sources ($S_\mathrm{1.2mm}$ ~ 0.6 mJy) without any counterparts in the deep $H$- and/or $K$-band image (i.e., $K$-band magnitude $\gtrsim$ 26 mag). These near-infrared-dark faint millimeter sources are uncovered by ASAGAO, a deep and wide-field ($\simeq$ 26 arcmin$^2$) Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) 1.2 mm survey. One has a red IRAC (3.6 and 4.5 $\mu$m) counterpart, and the other has been independently detected at 850 and 870 $\mu$m using SCUBA2 and ALMA Band 7, respectively. Their optical to radio spectral energy distributions indicate that they can lie at $z \gtrsim$ 3-5 and can be in the early phase of massive galaxy formation. Their contribution to the cosmic star formation rate density is estimated to be ~ 1 $\times$ 10$^{-3}$ $M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-3}$ if they lie somewhere in the redshift range of $z$ ~ 3-5. This value can be consistent with, or greater than that of bright submillimeter galaxies ($S_\mathrm{870\mu m}>$ 4.2 mJy) at $z$ ~ 3-5. We also uncover 3 more candidates near-infrared-dark faint ALMA sources without any counterparts ($S_\mathrm{1.2mm}$ ~ 0.45-0.86 mJy). These results show that an unbiased ALMA survey can reveal the dust-obscured star formation activities, which were missed in previous deep optical/near-infrared surveys., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Mechanisms regulating the escape of Ly$\alpha$ photons and ionizing radiation remain poorly understood. To study these processes we analyze VLA 21cm observations of one Green Pea (GP), J160810+352809 (hereafter J1608), and HST COS spectra of 17 GP galaxies at $z<0.2$. All are highly ionized: J1608 has the highest [O III] $\lambda5007$/[O II] $\lambda3727$ for star-forming galaxies in SDSS, and the 17 GPs have [O III]/[O II] $\geq6.6$. We set an upper limit on J1608's HI mass of $\log M_{HI}/M_\odot=8.4$, near or below average compared to similar mass dwarf galaxies. In the COS sample, eight GPs show Ly$\alpha$ absorption components, six of which also have Ly$\alpha$ emission. The HI column densities derived from Ly$\alpha$ absorption are high, $\log N_{HI}/$cm$^{-2}=19-21$, well above the LyC optically thick limit. Using low-ionization absorption lines, we measure covering fractions ($f_{\mbox{cov}}$) of $0.1-1$, and find that $f_{\mbox{cov}}$ strongly anti-correlates with Ly$\alpha$ escape fraction. Low covering fractions may facilitate Ly$\alpha$ and LyC escape through dense neutral regions. GPs with $f_{\mbox{cov}}\sim1$ all have low neutral gas velocities, while GPs with lower $f_{\mbox{cov}}=0.2-0.6$ have a larger range of velocities. Conventional mechanical feedback may help establish low $f_{\mbox{cov}}$ in some cases, whereas other processes may be important for GPs with low velocities. Finally, we compare $f_{\mbox{cov}}$ with proposed indicators of LyC escape. Ionizing photon escape likely depends on a combination of neutral gas geometry and kinematics, complicating the use of emission-line diagnostics for identifying LyC emitters., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present new ALMA dust continuum observations of 101 $\log(\mathrm{M}_* / \mathrm{M}_\odot)$ > 9.5 galaxies in the COSMOS field to study the effect of environment on the interstellar medium at z ~ 0.7. At this redshift, our targets span a wide range of environments allowing for a diverse sample of galaxies with densities, $\Sigma$ = 0.16-10.5 Mpc$^{-2}$ (per $\Delta$ z = 0.024). Using the ALMA observations, we calculate the total ISM mass and look for depletion as a function of galaxy density in order to understand the quenching or triggering of star formation in galaxies in different environments. ISM mass is found to have a small dependence on environment, while the depletion timescale remains constant (~200 Myrs) across all environments. We find elevated ISM mass values at intermediate densities and lower values at high densities compared to low (field) densities. Our observed evolution in gas fraction with density in this single redshift slice is equivalent to the observed evolution with cosmic time over 2-3 Gyr. To explain the change in gas mass fraction seen in galaxies in intermediate and high densities, these results suggest environmental processes such as mergers and ram pressure stripping are likely playing a role in dense filamentary-cluster environments., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a study of 16 HI-detected galaxies found in 178 hours of observations from Epoch 1 of the COSMOS HI Large Extragalactic Survey (CHILES). We focus on two redshift ranges between 0.108 <= z <= 0.127 and 0.162 <= z <= 0.183 which are among the worst affected by radio frequency interference (RFI). While this represents only 10% of the total frequency coverage and 18% of the total expected time on source compared to what will be the full CHILES survey, we demonstrate that our data reduction pipeline recovers high quality data even in regions severely impacted by RFI. We report on our in-depth testing of an automated spectral line source finder to produce HI total intensity maps which we present side-by-side with significance maps to evaluate the reliability of the morphology recovered by the source finder. We recommend that this become a common place manner of presenting data from upcoming HI surveys of resolved objects. We use the COSMOS 20k group catalogue, and we extract filamentary structure using the topological DisPerSE algorithm to evaluate the \hi\ morphology in the context of both local and large-scale environments and we discuss the shortcomings of both methods. Many of the detections show disturbed HI morphologies suggesting they have undergone a recent interaction which is not evident from deep optical imaging alone. Overall, the sample showcases the broad range of ways in which galaxies interact with their environment. We present a high-sensitivity ($1\sigma<1.6~\mathrm{mJy~beam^{-1}}$) continuum observation in a 343 arcmin$^2$ area of the northeast region in the Small Magellanic Cloud at a wavelength of 1.1 mm, conducted using the AzTEC instrument on the ASTE telescope. In the observed region, we identified 20 objects by contouring $10\sigma$ emission. Through spectral energy distribution (SED) analysis using 1.1 mm, $Herschel$, and $Spitzer$ data, we estimated the gas masses of $5\times 10^3-7\times 10^4~\mathrm{M_\odot}$, assuming a gas-to-dust ratio of 1000. Dust temperature and the index of emissivity were also estimated as $18-33$ K and $0.9-1.9$, respectively, which are consistent with previous low resolution studies. The relation between dust temperature and the index of emissivity shows a weak negative linear correlation. We also investigated five CO-detected dust-selected clouds in detail. The total gas masses were comparable to those estimated from the Mopra CO data, indicating that the assumed gas-to-dust ratio of 1000 and the $X_\mathrm{CO}$ factor of $1\times10^{21}~\mathrm{cm^{-2}~(K~km~s^{-1})^{-1}}$, with uncertainties of a factor of 2, are reliable for the estimation of the gas masses of molecular or dust-selected clouds. Dust column density showed good spatial correlation with CO emission, except for an object that associates with bright young stellar objects. The $8~\mathrm{\mu m}$ filamentary and clumpy structures also showed similar spatial distribution with the CO emission and dust column density, supporting the fact that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emissions arise from the surfaces of dense gas and dust clouds., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication by ApJ

Submillimeter bright galaxies in the early Universe are vigorously forming stars at ~1000 times higher rate than the Milky Way. A large fraction of stars is formed in the central 1 kiloparsec region, that is comparable in size to massive, quiescent galaxies found at the peak of the cosmic star formation history, and eventually the core of giant elliptical galaxies in the present-day Universe. However, the physical and kinematic properties inside a compact starburst core are poorly understood because dissecting it requires angular resolution even higher than the Hubble Space Telescope can offer. Here we report 550 parsec-resolution observations of gas and dust in the brightest unlensed submillimeter galaxy at z=4.3. We map out for the first time the spatial and kinematic structure of molecular gas inside the heavily dust-obscured core. The gas distribution is clumpy while the underlying disk is rotation-supported. Exploiting the high-quality map of molecular gas mass surface density, we find a strong evidence that the starburst disk is gravitationally unstable, implying that the self-gravity of gas overcomes the differential rotation and the internal pressure by stellar radiation feedback. The observed molecular gas would be consumed by star formation in a timescale of 100 million years, that is comparable to those in merging starburst galaxies. We present the survey design, data reduction, construction of images, and source catalog of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) twenty-six arcmin^2 survey of GOODS-S at one-millimeter (ASAGAO). ASAGAO is a deep (1sigma ~ 61 uJy/beam for a 250 klambda-tapered map with a synthesized beam size of 0.51" x 0.45") and wide area (26 arcmin^2) survey on a contiguous field at 1.2 mm. By combining with ALMA archival data in the GOODS-South field, we obtained a deeper map in the same region (1sigma ~ 30 uJy/beam for a deep region with a 250 klambda-taper, and a synthesized beam size of 0.59" x 0.53"), providing the largest sample of sources (25 sources at >=5.0sigma, 45 sources at >=4.5sigma) among ALMA blank-field surveys to date. The number counts shows that 52(+11 -8)% of the extragalactic background light at 1.2 mm is resolved into discrete sources at S1.2m > 135 uJy. We create infrared (IR) luminosity functions (LFs) in the redshift range of z = 1-3 from the ASAGAO sources with KS-band counterparts, and constrain the faintest luminosity of the LF at 2.0 < z < 3.0. The LFs are consistent with previous results based on other ALMA and SCUBA-2 observations, which suggest a positive luminosity evolution and negative density evolution with increasing redshift. We find that obscured star-formation of sources with IR luminosities of log(L(IR)/Lsun)} ~> 11.8 account for ~~60%-90% of the z ~ 2 cosmic star-formation rate density., Comment: 19 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

We present a 3x3 degrees, 105-pointing, high-resolution neutral hydrogen (HI) mosaic of the M81 galaxy triplet (including the galaxies M81, M82 and NGC 3077, as well as dwarf galaxy NGC 2976) obtained with the Very Large Array (VLA) C and D arrays. This uniformly covers the entire area and velocity range of the triplet with a resolution of ~20'' or ~420 pc. The data reveal many small-scale anomalous velocity features highlighting the complexity of the interacting M81 triplet. We compare our data with Green Bank Telescope (GBT) observations of the same area. This provides evidence for a substantial reservoir of low-column density gas in the northern part of the triplet, probably associated with M82. Such a reservoir is not found in the southern part. We report a number of kpc-sized low-mass HI clouds with HI masses of a few times 10^6 Msun. Their dynamical masses are much larger than their baryonic masses, which could indicate the presence of dark matter if the clouds are rotationally supported. However, due to their spatial and kinematical association with HI tidal features, it is more likely that the velocity widths indicate tidal effects or streaming motions. We do not find any clouds not associated with tidal features down to an HI mass limit of a few times 10^4 Msun. We compare the HI column densities with resolved stellar density maps and find a star formation threshold around 3-6 10^20 cm-2$. We find that extreme velocity dispersions can be explained by a superposition of multiple components along the line of sight near M81 as well as winds or outflows around M82. The velocity dispersions found are high enough that these processes could explain the linewidths of Damped-Lyman-alpha absorbers observed at high redshift., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal. We present high-resolution observations (0".2-1".5) of multiple dense gas tracers, HCN and HCO$^+$ ($J$ = 1-0, 3-2, and 4-3), HNC ($J$ = 1-0), and CS ($J$ = 7-6) lines, toward the nearby luminous infrared galaxy VV 114 with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. All lines are robustly detected at the central gaseous filamentary structure including the eastern nucleus and the Overlap region, the collision interface of the progenitors. We found that there is no correlation between star formation efficiency and dense gas fraction, indicating that the amount of dense gas does not simply control star formation in VV 114. We predict the presence of more turbulent and diffuse molecular gas clouds around the Overlap region compared to those at the nuclear region assuming a turbulence-regulated star formation model. The intracloud turbulence at the Overlap region might be excited by galaxy-merger-induced shocks, which also explains the enhancement of gas-phase CH$_3$OH abundance previously found there. We also present spatially resolved spectral line energy distributions of HCN and HCO$^+$ for the first time, and derive excitation parameters by assuming optically-thin and local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) conditions. The LTE model revealed that warmer, HCO$^+$-poorer molecular gas medium is dominated around the eastern nucleus, harboring an AGN. The HCN abundance is remarkably flat ($\sim$3.5 $\times$ 10$^{-9}$) independently of the various environments within the filament of VV 114 (i.e., AGN, star formation, and shock)., Comment: 23 pages, 21 figures (downconverted), 5 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a study of the HI gas content of a large K-band selected sample of 88 close major-merger pairs of galaxies (H-KPAIR) which were observed by $\it Herschel$. We obtained the 21 cm HI fine-structure emission line data for a total of 70 pairs from this sample, by observing 58 pairs using the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) and retrieving the HI data for an addition 12 pairs from the literature. In this HI sample, 34 pairs are spiral-spiral (S+S) pairs, and 36 are spiral-elliptical (S+E). Based on these data, we studied the HI-to-stellar mass ratio, the HI gas fraction and the HI star formation efficiency (SFE$_{\mathrm{HI}}$ = star formation rate/$M_{\mathrm{HI}}$) and searched for differences between S+S and S+E pairs, as well as between pairs with and without signs for merger/interaction. Our results showed that the mean HI-to-stellar mass ratio of spirals in these pairs is $=7.6\pm1.0 \%$, consistent with the average HI gas fraction of spiral galaxies in general. The differences in the HI gas fraction between spirals in S+S and in S+E pairs, and between spirals in pairs with and without signs of merger/interaction are insignificant ($< 1 \sigma$). On the other hand, the mean SFE$_{\mathrm{HI}}$ of S+S pairs is $\sim4.6\times$ higher than that of S+E pairs. This difference is very significant ($\sim 4\sigma$) and is the main result of our study. There is no significant difference in the mean SFE$_{\mathrm{HI}}$ between galaxies with and without signs of merger/interaction. The mean SFE$_{\mathrm{HI}}$ of the whole pair sample is $10^{-9.55\pm 0.09}\ \mathrm{yr}^{-1}$, corresponding to a HI consumption time of $3.5\pm0.7$ Gyrs., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJS. We report the study of far-IR sizes of submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) in relation to their dust-obscured star formation rate (SFR) and active galactic nuclei (AGN) presence, determined using mid-IR photometry. We determined the millimeter-wave ($\lambda_{\rm obs}=1100 \mu$m) sizes of 69 ALMA-identified SMGs, selected with $\geq10$$\sigma$ confidence on ALMA images ($F_{\rm 1100 \mu m}=1.7$--7.4 mJy). We found that all the SMGs are located above an avoidance region in the millimeter size-flux plane, as expected by the Eddington limit for star formation. In order to understand what drives the different millimeter-wave sizes in SMGs, we investigated the relation between millimeter-wave size and AGN fraction for 25 of our SMGs at $z=1$--3. We found that the SMGs for which the mid-IR emission is dominated by star formation or AGN have extended millimeter-sizes, with respective median $R_{\rm c,e} = 1.6^{+0.34}_{-0.21}$ and 1.5$^{+0.93}_{-0.24}$ kpc. Instead, the SMGs for which the mid-IR emission corresponds to star-forming/AGN composites have more compact millimeter-wave sizes, with median $R_{\rm c,e}=1.0^{+0.20}_{-0.20}$ kpc. The relation between millimeter-wave size and AGN fraction suggests that this size may be related to the evolutionary stage of the SMG. The total star formation budget of galaxies consists of the sum of the unobscured star formation, as observed in the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV), together with the obscured component that is absorbed and re-radiated by dust grains in the infrared. We explore how the fraction of obscured star formation depends on stellar mass for mass-complete samples of galaxies at $01$. For log(M/M$_{\odot}$)$>$10.5, $>$90\% of star formation is obscured at all redshifts. We also show that at fixed total SFR, $f_{\mathrm{obscured}}$ is lower at higher redshift. At fixed mass, high-redshift galaxies are observed to have more compact sizes and much higher star formation rates, gas fractions and hence surface densities (implying higher dust obscuration), yet we observe no redshift evolution in $f_{\mathrm{obscured}}$ with stellar mass. Since their discovery, submillimetre-selected galaxies (SMGs) have revolutionized the field of galaxy formation and evolution. From the hundreds of square degrees mapped at submillimetre wavelengths, only a handful of sources have been confirmed to lie at z>5 and only two at z>6. All of these SMGs are rare examples of extreme starburst galaxies with star formation rates (SFRs) of >1000 M_sun/yr and therefore are not representative of the general population of dusty star-forming galaxies. Consequently, our understanding of the nature of these sources, at the earliest epochs, is still incomplete. Here we report the spectroscopic identification of a gravitationally amplified (mu = 9.3 +/- 1.0) dusty star-forming galaxy at z=6.027. After correcting for gravitational lensing, we derive an intrinsic less-extreme SFR of 380 +/- 50 M_sun/yr for this source and find that its gas and dust properties are similar to those measured for local Ultra Luminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs), extending the local trends to a poorly explored territory in the early Universe. The star-formation efficiency of this galaxy is similar to those measured in its local analogues, despite a ~12 Gyr difference in cosmic time., Comment: Published in Nature Astronomy. We investigate gas contents of star-forming galaxies associated with protocluster 4C23.56 at z = 2.49 by using the redshifted CO(3-2) and 1.1 mm dust continuum with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. The observations unveil seven CO detections out of 22 targeted H$\alpha$ emitters (HAEs) and four out of 19 in 1.1 mm dust continuum. They have high stellar mass ($M_{\star}>4\times 10^{10}$ $M_{\odot}$) and exhibit a specific star-formation rate typical of main-sequence star forming galaxies at $z\sim2.5$. Different gas mass estimators from CO(3-2) and 1.1 mm yield consistent values for simultaneous detections. The gas mass ($M_{\rm gas}$) and gas fraction ($f_{\rm gas}$) are comparable to those of field galaxies, with $M_{\rm gas}=[0.3, 1.8]\times10^{11} \times (\alpha_{\rm CO}/(4.36\times A(Z)$)) M$_{\odot}$, where $\alpha_{\rm CO}$ is the CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor and $A(Z)$ the additional correction factor for the metallicity dependence of $\alpha_{\rm CO}$, and $\langle f_{\rm gas}\rangle = 0.53 \pm 0.07$ from CO(3-2). Our measurements place a constraint on the cosmic gas density of high-$z$ protoclusters, indicating the protocluster is characterized by a gas density higher than that of the general fields by an order of magnitude. We found $\rho (H_2)\sim 5 \times 10^9 \,M_{\odot}\,{\rm Mpc^{-3}}$ with the CO(3-2) detections. The five ALMA CO detections occur in the region of highest galaxy surface density, where the density positively correlates with global star-forming efficiency (SFE) and stellar mass. We present the detailed characterization of two extremely red submillimeter galaxies (SMGs), ASXDF1100.053.1 and 231.1, with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and the Jansky Very Large Array (VLA). These SMGs were selected originally using AzTEC at 1100 micron, and are observed by Herschel to be faint at 100--500 micron. Their (sub)millimeter colors are as red as -- or redder -- than known z>~5 SMGs; indeed, ASXDF1100.053.1 is redder than HFLS 3, which lies at z=6.3. They are also faint and red in the near-/mid-infrared: ~1 microJy at IRAC 4.5 micron and <0.2 microJy in the Ks filter. These SMGs are also faint in the radio waveband, where F_6GHz=4.5 microJy for ASXDF1100.053.1 and F_1.4GHz=28 microJy for ASXDF1100.231.1, suggestive of z=6.5^{+1.4}_{-1.1} and z=4.1^{+0.6}_{-0.7} for ASXDF1100.053.1 and 231.1, respectively. ASXDF1100.231.1 has a flux excess in the 3.6-micron filter, probably due to H$\alpha$ emission at z=4--5. Derived properties of ASXDF1100.053.1 for z=5.5--7.5 and 231.1 for z=3.5--5.5 are as follows: their infrared luminosities are [6.5-7.4]x10^{12} and [4.2-4.5]x10^{12} L_sun; their stellar masses are [0.9-2]x10^{11} and [0.4-3]x10^{10} M_sun; their circularized half-light radii in the ALMA maps are ~1 and <~0.2 kpc (~2--3 kpc for 90% of the total flux). Lastly, their surface infrared luminosity densities, Sigma_IR, are ~1x10^{12} and >~1.5x10^{13} L_sun kpc^{-2}, similar to values seen for local (U)LIRGs. These data suggest that ASXDF1100.053.1 and 231.1 are compact SMGs at z>~4 and can plausibly evolve into z>~3 compact quiescent galaxies., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures, accepted to the Astrophysical Journal part1

We report the result from observations conducted with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to detect [CII] 158 um fine structure line emission from galaxies embedded in one of the most spectacular Lyman-alpha blobs (LABs) at z=3.1, SSA22-LAB1. Of three dusty star-forming galaxies previously discovered by ALMA 860 um dust continuum survey toward SSA22-LAB1, we detected the [CII] line from one, LAB1-ALMA3 at z=3.0993+/-0.0004. No line emission was detected, associated with the other ALMA continuum sources or from three rest-frame UV/optical selected z_spec~3.1 galaxies within the field of view. For LAB1-ALMA3, we find relatively bright [CII] emission compared to the infrared luminosity (L_[CII]/L_[CII]) and an extremely high [CII] 158 um and [NII] 205 um emission line ratio (L_[CII]/L_[NII]>55). The relatively strong [CII] emission may be caused by abundant photodissociation regions and sub-solar metallicity, or by shock heating. The origin of the unusually strong [CII] emission could be causally related to the location within the giant LAB, although the relationship between extended Lyman-alpha emission and ISM conditions of associated galaxies is yet to be understand., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters

We present high-resolution (1".0) Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of CO (1-0) and CO (2- 1) rotational transitions toward the nearby IR-luminous merger NGC 1614 supplemented with ALMA archival data of CO (3-2), and CO (6-5) transitions. The CO (6-5) emission arises from the starburst ring (central 590 pc in radius), while the lower-$J$ CO lines are distributed over the outer disk ($\sim$ 3.3 kpc in radius). Radiative transfer and photon dominated region (PDR) modeling reveal that the starburst ring has a single warmer gas component with more intense far-ultraviolet radiation field ($n_{\rm{H_2}}$ $\sim$ 10$^{4.6}$ cm$^{-3}$, $T_{\rm{kin}}$ $\sim$ 42 K, and $G_{\rm{0}}$ $\sim$ 10$^{2.7}$) relative to the outer disk ($n_{\rm{H_2}}$ $\sim$ 10$^{5.1}$ cm$^{-3}$, $T_{\rm{kin}}$ $\sim$ 22 K, and $G_{\rm{0}}$ $\sim$ 10$^{0.9}$). A two-phase molecular interstellar medium with a warm and cold ($>$ 70 K and $\sim$ 19 K) component is also an applicable model for the starburst ring. A possible source for heating the warm gas component is mechanical heating due to stellar feedback rather than PDR. Furthermore, we find evidence for non-circular motions along the north-south optical bar in the lower-$J$ CO images, suggesting a cold gas inflow. We suggest that star formation in the starburst ring is sustained by the bar-driven cold gas inflow, and starburst activities radiatively and mechanically power the CO excitation. The absence of a bright active galactic nucleus can be explained by a scenario that cold gas accumulating on the starburst ring is exhausted as the fuel for star formation, or is launched as an outflow before being able to feed to the nucleus., Comment: 20 pages, 19 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

The first 1.1 mm continuum survey toward the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) was performed using the AzTEC instrument installed on the ASTE 10-m telescope. This survey covered 4.5 deg$^2$ of the SMC with $1\sigma$ noise levels of $5-12$ mJy beam$^{-1}$, and 44 extended objects were identified. The 1.1 mm extended emission has good spatial correlation with $Herschel$ 160 $\mathrm{\mu m}$, indicating that the origin of the 1.1 mm extended emission is thermal emission from a cold dust component. We estimated physical properties using the 1.1 mm and filtered $Herschel$ data (100, 160, 250, 350, and 500 $\mathrm{\mu m}$). The 1.1 mm objects show dust temperatures of $17-45$ K and gas masses of $4\times10^3-3\times10^5~M_\odot$, assuming single-temperature thermal emission from the cold dust with an emissivity index, $\beta$, of 1.2 and a gas-to-dust ratio of 1000. These physical properties are very similar to those of giant molecular clouds (GMCs) in our galaxy and the Large Magellanic Cloud. The 1.1 mm objects also displayed good spatial correlation with the $Spitzer$ 24 $\mathrm{\mu m}$ and CO emission, suggesting that the 1.1 mm objects trace the dense gas regions as sites of massive star formation. The dust temperature of the 1.1 mm objects also demonstrated good correlation with the 24 $\mathrm{\mu m}$ flux connected to massive star formation. This supports the hypothesis that the heating source of the cold dust is mainly local star-formation activity in the 1.1 mm objects. The classification of the 1.1 mm objects based on the existence of star-formation activity reveals the differences in the dust temperature, gas mass, and radius, which reflects the evolution sequence of GMCs., Comment: 26 pages, 13 figures. We present results from a deep 2'x3' (comoving scale of 3.7 Mpc x 5.5 Mpc at z=3) survey at 1.1 mm taken with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in the SSA22 field. We observe the core region of a z = 3.09 protocluster, achieving a typical rms sensitivity of 60 micro-Jy/beam at a spatial resolution of 0".7. We detect 18 robust ALMA sources at a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) > 5. Comparison between the ALMA map and a 1.1 mm map taken with the AzTEC camera on the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE) indicates that three submillimeter sources discovered by the AzTEC/ASTE survey are resolved into eight individual submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) by ALMA. At least ten of our 18 ALMA SMGs have spectroscopic redshifts of z = 3.09, placing them in the protocluster. This shows that a number of dusty starburst galaxies are forming simultaneously in the core of the protocluster. The nine brightest ALMA SMGs with SNR > 10 have a median intrinsic angular size of 0".32+0".13-0".06 (2.4+1.0-0.4 physical kpc at z = 3.09), which is consistent with previous size measurements of SMGs in other fields. As expected the source counts show a possible excess compared to the counts in the general fields at S_1.1mm >= 1.0 mJy due to the protocluster. We report the detection of two CH$_3$OH lines (J$_K$ = 2$_K$-1$_K$ and 3$_K$-2$_K$) between the progenitor's disks ("Overlap") of the mid-stage merging galaxy VV 114 obtained using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Band 3 and Band 4. The detected CH$_3$OH emission show an extended filamentary structure (~ 3 kpc) across the progenitor's disks with relatively large velocity width (FWZI ~ 150 km/s). The emission is only significant in the "overlap" and not detected in the two merging nuclei. Assuming optically-thin emission and local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE), we found the CH$_3$OH column density relative to H$_2$ ($X_{\rm CH_3OH}$) peaks at the "Overlap" (~ 8 $\times$ 10$^{-9}$), which is almost an order of magnitude larger than that at the eastern nucleus. We suggest that kpc-scale shocks driven by galaxy-galaxy collision may play an important role to enhance the CH$_3$OH abundance at the "Overlap". This scenario is consistent with that shock-induced large velocity dispersion components of ionized gas have been detected in optical wavelength at the same region. Conversely, low $X_{\rm CH_3OH}$ at the nuclear regions might be attributed to the strong photodissociation by nuclear starbursts and/or putative active galactic nucleus (AGN), or inefficient production of CH$_3$OH on dust grains due to initial high temperature conditions (i.e., desorption of the precursor molecule, CO, into gas-phase before forming CH$_3$OH on dust grains). These ALMA observations demonstrate that CH$_3$OH is a unique tool to address kpc-scale shock-induced gas dynamics and star formation in merging galaxies., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present stacking analyses on our ALMA deep 1.1 mm imaging in the SXDF using 1.6 {\mu}m and 3.6 {\mu}m selected galaxies in the CANDELS WFC3 catalog. We detect a stacked flux of ~0.03-0.05 mJy, corresponding to LIR < 10^11 Lsun and a star formation rate (SFR) of ~ 15 Msun/yr at z = 2. We find that galaxies brighter in the rest-frame near-infrared tend to be also brighter at 1.1 mm, and galaxies fainter than m[3.6um] = 23 do not produce detectable 1.1 mm emission. This suggests a correlation between stellar mass and SFR, but outliers to this correlation are also observed, suggesting strongly boosted star formation or extremely large extinction. We also find tendencies that redder galaxies and galaxies at higher redshifts are brighter at 1.1 mm. Our field contains z ~ 2.5 H-alpha emitters and a bright single-dish source. However, we do not find evidence of bias in our results caused by the bright source. By combining the fluxes of sources detected by ALMA and fluxes of faint sources detected with stacking, we recover a 1.1 mm surface brightness of up to 20.3 +/- 1.2 Jy/deg, comparable to the extragalactic background light measured by COBE. Based on the fractions of optically faint sources in our and previous ALMA studies and the COBE measurements, we find that approximately half of the cosmic star formation may be obscured by dust and missed by deep optical surveys, Much deeper and wider ALMA imaging is therefore needed to better constrain the obscured cosmic star formation history., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

The central structure in three of the brightest unlensed z=3-4 submillimeter galaxies are investigated through 0.015" - 0.05" (120 -- 360~pc) 860 micron continuum images obtained using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The distribution in the central kpc in AzTEC1 and AzTEC8 are extremely complex, and they are composed of multiple ~200 pc clumps. AzTEC4 consists of two sources that are separated by ~1.5 kpc, indicating a mid-stage merger. The peak star formation rate densities in the central clumps are ~300 - 3000 Msun/yr/kpc^2, suggesting regions with extreme star formation near the Eddington Limit. By comparing the flux obtained by ALMA and Submillimeter Array (SMA), we find that 68-90% of the emission is extended (> 1 kpc) in AzTEC 4 and 8. For AzTEC1, we identify at least 11 additional compact (~200 pc) clumps in the extended 3 - 4 kpc region. Overall, the data presented here suggest that the luminosity surface densities observed at < 150 pc scales are roughly similar to that observed in local ULIRGs, as in the eastern nucleus of Arp 220. Between 10 to 30% of the 860 micron continuum is concentrated in clumpy structures in the central kpc while the remaining flux is distributed over > 1 kpc regions, some of which could also be clumpy. These sources can be explained by a rapid inflow of gas such as a merger of gas-rich galaxies, surrounded by extended and clumpy starbursts. We present a multi-wavelength analysis of five submillimeter sources (S_1.1mm = 0.54-2.02 mJy) that were detected during our 1.1-mm-deep continuum survey in the SXDF-UDS-CANDELS field (2 arcmin^2, 1sigma = 0.055 mJy beam^-1) using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The two brightest sources correspond to a known single-dish (AzTEC) selected bright submillimeter galaxy (SMG), whereas the remaining three are faint SMGs newly uncovered by ALMA. If we exclude the two brightest sources, the contribution of the ALMA-detected faint SMGs to the infrared extragalactic background light is estimated to be ~ 4.1^{+5.4}_{-3.0} Jy deg^{-2}, which corresponds to ~ 16^{+22}_{-12}% of the infrared extragalactic background light. This suggests that their contribution to the infrared extragalactic background light is as large as that of bright SMGs. We identified multi-wavelength counterparts of the five ALMA sources. One of the sources (SXDF-ALMA3) is extremely faint in the optical to near-infrared region despite its infrared luminosity (L_IR ~ 1e12 L_sun or SFR ~ 100 M_sun yr^{-1}). By fitting the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) at the optical-to-near-infrared wavelengths of the remaining four ALMA sources, we obtained the photometric redshifts (z_photo) and stellar masses (M_*): z_photo ~ 1.3-2.5, M_* ~ (3.5-9.5)e10 M_sun. We also derived their star formation rates (SFRs) and specific SFRs (sSFRs) as ~ 30-200 M_sun yr^{-1} and ~ 0.8-2 Gyr^{-1}, respectively. Our current understanding of galaxy evolution still has many uncertainties associated with the details of accretion, processing, and removal of gas across cosmic time. The next generation of radio telescopes will image the neutral hydrogen (HI) in galaxies over large volumes at high redshifts, which will provide key insights into these processes. We are conducting the COSMOS HI Large Extragalactic Survey (CHILES) with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array, which is the first survey to simultaneously observe HI from z=0 to z~0.5. Here, we report the highest redshift HI 21-cm detection in emission to date of the luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) COSMOS J100054.83+023126.2 at z=0.376 with the first 178 hours of CHILES data. The total HI mass is $(2.9\pm1.0)\times10^{10}~M_\odot$, and the spatial distribution is asymmetric and extends beyond the galaxy. While optically the galaxy looks undisturbed, the HI distribution suggests an interaction with candidate a candidate companion. In addition, we present follow-up Large Millimeter Telescope CO observations that show it is rich in molecular hydrogen, with a range of possible masses of $(1.8-9.9)\times10^{10}~M_\odot$. In a hierarchical Universe clusters grow via the accretion of galaxies from the field, groups and even other clusters. As this happens, galaxies can lose their gas reservoirs via different mechanisms, eventually quenching their star-formation. We explore the diverse environmental histories of galaxies through a multi-wavelength study of the combined effect of ram-pressure stripping and group "processing" in Abell 963, a massive growing cluster at $z=0.2$ from the Blind Ultra Deep HI Environmental Survey (BUDHIES). We incorporate hundreds of new optical redshifts (giving a total of 566 cluster members), as well as Subaru and XMM-Newton data from LoCuSS, to identify substructures and evaluate galaxy morphology, star-formation activity, and HI content (via HI deficiencies and stacking) out to $3\times R_{200}$. We find that Abell 963 is being fed by at least 7 groups, that contribute to the large number of passive galaxies outside the cluster core. More massive groups have a higher fraction of passive and HI-poor galaxies, while low-mass groups host younger (often interacting) galaxies. For cluster galaxies not associated with groups we corroborate our previous finding that HI gas (if any) is significantly stripped via ram-pressure during their first passage through the intra-cluster medium, and find mild evidence for a starburst associated with this event. In addition, we find an overabundance of morphologically peculiar and/or star-forming galaxies near the cluster core. We speculate that these arise as groups pass through the cluster (post-processing). We present 8.5 arcsec resolution 1.1mm continuum imaging and CO spectroscopic redshift measurements of eight extremely bright submillimetre galaxies identified from the Planck and Herschel surveys, taken with the Large Millimeter Telescope's AzTEC and Redshift Search Receiver instruments. We compiled a candidate list of high redshift galaxies by cross-correlating the Planck Surveyor mission's highest frequency channel (857 GHz, FWHM = 4.5 arcmin) with the archival Herschel Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver (SPIRE) imaging data, and requiring the presence of a unique, single Herschel counterpart within the 150 arcsec search radius of the Planck source positions with 350 micron flux density larger than 100 mJy, excluding known blazars and foreground galaxies. All eight candidate objects observed are detected in 1.1mm continuum by AzTEC bolometer camera, and at least one CO line is detected in all cases with a spectroscopic redshift between 1.3 < z(CO) < 3.3. Their infrared spectral energy distributions mapped using the Herschel and AzTEC photometry are consistent with cold dust emission with characteristic temperature between $T_d$ = 43 K and 84 K. With apparent infrared luminosity of up to L(IR) = $3\times10^{14} \mu^{-1} L_\odot$, they are some of the most luminous galaxies ever found (with yet unknown gravitational magnification factor $\mu$). The analysis of their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) suggests that star formation is powering the bulk of their extremely large IR luminosities. Derived molecular gas masses of $M_{H2}=(0.6-7.8)\times 10^{11} M_\odot$ (for $\mu$~10) also make them some of the most gas-rich high redshift galaxies ever detected., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

We report 1.1 mm number counts revealed with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey Field (SXDF). The advent of ALMA enables us to reveal millimeter-wavelength number counts down to the faint end without source confusion. However, previous studies are based on the ensemble of serendipitously-detected sources in fields originally targeting different sources and could be biased due to the clustering of sources around the targets. We derive number counts in the flux range of 0.2-2 mJy by using 23 (>=4sigma) sources detected in a continuous 2.0 arcmin$^2$ area of the SXDF. The number counts are consistent with previous results within errors, suggesting that the counts derived from serendipitously-detected sources are not significantly biased, although there could be field-to-field variation due to the small survey area. By using the best-fit function of the number counts, we find that ~40% of the extragalactic background light at 1.1 mm is resolved at S(1.1mm) > 0.2 mJy., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, Accepted for publication in PASJ

We present Herschel PACS $\&$ SPIRE far-infrared (FIR) and sub-mm imaging observations for a large K-band selected sample of 88 close major-merger pairs of galaxies (H-KPAIRs) in 6 photometric bands (70, 100, 160, 250, 350, and 500 $\mu m$). Among 132 spiral galaxies in the 44 spiral-spiral (S$+$S) pairs and 44 spiral-elliptical (S$+$E) pairs, 113 are detected in at least one Herschel band. Star formation rate (SFR) and dust mass ($M_{\rm dust}$) are derived from the IR SED fitting. Mass of total gas ($M_{\rm gas}$) is estimated by assuming a constant dust-to-gas mass ratio of 0.01. Star forming spiral galaxies (SFGs) in S$+$S pairs show significant enhancements in both specific star formation rate (sSFR) and star formation efficiency (SFE), while having nearly the same gas mass, compared to control galaxies. On the other hand, for SFGs in S$+$E pairs, there is no significant sSFR enhancement and the mean SFE enhancement is significantly lower than that of SFGs in S$+$S pairs. This suggests an important role for the disc-disc collision in the interaction induced star formation. The $M_{\rm gas}$ of SFGs in S$+$E pairs is marginally lower than that of their counterparts in both S$+$S pairs and the control sample. Paired galaxies with and without interaction signs do not differ significantly in their mean sSFR and SFE. As found in previous works, this much larger sample confirms the primary and secondary spirals in S+S pairs follow a Holmberg effect correlation on sSFR., Comment: 21 pages, 14 figures, 5 tables.
