The active galactic nucleus (AGN) within M87, a giant elliptical galaxy, is responsible for one of the closest kiloparsec-scale relativistic jet to Earth. We unearthed unpublished M87 polarization maps taken with the Faint Object Camera (FOC) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), obtained between 1995 and 1999. At a rate of one observation per year, we can follow the evolution of the polarized flux knots in the jet. We can thus constrain the time scale of variation of the magnetic field up to a spatial resolution of one tenth of an arcsecond (11.5 pc). After coherently reducing the five observations using the same methodology presented in the first paper of this series, the analysis of polarized maps from POS 1 (base of the jet) and POS 3 (end of the jet) reveals significant temporal and spatial dynamics in the jet's magnetic fields morphology. Despite minimal changes in overall intensity structure, notable fluctuations in polarization degrees and angles are detected across various knots and inter-knot regions. In addition, the emission and polarization characteristics of M87's jet differ significantly between POS1 and POS3. POS1 shows a more collimated jet with strong variability in polarization, while POS3 reveals a thicker structure, a quasi-absence of variability and complex magnetic field interactions. This suggests that the jet may have co-axial structures with distinct kinetic properties. We used the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) satellite to measure, for the first time, the 2-8 keV polarization of NGC 1068. We pointed IXPE for a net exposure time of 1.15 Ms on the target, in addition to two ~ 10 ks each Chandra snapshots in order to account for the potential impact of several ultraluminous X-ray source (ULXs) within IXPE's field-of-view. We measured a 2 - 8 keV polarization degree of 12.4% +/- 3.6% and an electric vector polarization angle of 101{\deg} +/- 8{\deg} at 68% confidence level. If we exclude the spectral region containing the bright Fe K lines and other soft X-ray lines where depolarization occurs, the polarization fraction rises up to 21.3% +/- 6.7% in the 3.5 - 6.0 keV band, with a similar polarization angle. The observed polarization angle is found to be perpendicular to the parsec scale radio jet. Using a combined Chandra and IXPE analysis plus multi-wavelength constraints, we estimated that the circumnuclear "torus" may sustain a half-opening angle of 50{\deg} - 55{\deg} (from the vertical axis of the system). Thanks to IXPE, we have measured the X-ray polarization of NGC 1068 and found comparable results, both in terms of polarization angle orientation with respect to the radio-jet and torus half-opening angle, to the X-ray polarimetric measurement achieved for the other archetypal Compton-thick AGN : the Circinus galaxy. We present the results of the first X-ray polarimetric observation of the low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1957+115, performed with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer in May 2023. The binary system has been in a high-soft spectral state since its discovery and is thought to host a black hole. The $\sim$571 ks observation reveals a linear polarisation degree of $1.9\% \pm 0.6\%$ and a polarisation angle of $-41^\circ.8 \pm 7^\circ.9$ in the 2-8 keV energy range. Spectral modelling is consistent with the dominant contribution coming from the standard accretion disc, while polarimetric data suggest a significant role of returning radiation: photons that are bent by strong gravity effects and forced to return to the disc surface, where they can be reflected before eventually reaching the observer. We present higher Chern-Simons-Antoniadis-Savvidy (ChSAS) forms based on crossed modules. We start from introducing a generalized multilineal symmetric invariant polynomial for the differential crossed modules and constructing a metric independent, higher gauge invariant, and closed form using the higher curvature forms. Then, we establish the higher Chern-Weil theorem and prove that the higher ChSAS forms is a special case of this theorem. Finally, we get the link of two independent higher ChSAS theories.

We report on a comprehensive analysis of simultaneous X-ray polarimetric and spectral data of the bright atoll source GX 9+9 with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) and NuSTAR. The source is significantly polarized in the 4--8 keV band, with a degree of $2.2\% \pm 0.5\%$ (uncertainty at the 68% confidence level). The NuSTAR broad-band spectrum clearly shows an iron line, and is well described by a model including thermal disk emission, a Comptonized component, and reflection. From a spectro-polarimetric fit, we obtain an upper limit to the polarization degree of the disk of 4% (at 99% confidence level), while the contribution of Comptonized and reflected radiation cannot be conclusively separated. However, the polarization is consistent with resulting from a combination of Comptonization in a boundary or spreading layer, plus reflection off the disc, which gives a significant contribution in any realistic scenario., Comment: 10 pages, accepted for publication in A&A

We present an X-ray spectro-polarimetric analysis of the bright Seyfert galaxy IC 4329A. The Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) observed the source for ~500 ks, supported by XMM-Newton (~60 ks) and NuSTAR (~80 ks) exposures. We detect polarisation in the 2-8 keV band with 2.97 sigma confidence. We report a polarisation degree of $3.3\pm1.1$ per cent and a polarisation angle of $78\pm10$ degrees (errors are 1 sigma confidence). The X-ray polarisation is consistent with being aligned with the radio jet, albeit partially due to large uncertainties on the radio position angle. We jointly fit the spectra from the three observatories to constrain the presence of a relativistic reflection component. From this, we obtain constraints on the inclination angle to the inner disc (< 39 degrees at 99 per cent confidence) and the disc inner radius (< 11 gravitational radii at 99 per cent confidence), although we note that modelling systematics in practice add to the quoted statistical error. Our spectro-polarimetric modelling indicates that the 2-8 keV polarisation is consistent with being dominated by emission directly observed from the X-ray corona, but the polarisation of the reflection component is completely unconstrained. Our constraints on viewer inclination and polarisation degree tentatively favour more asymmetric, possibly out-flowing, coronal geometries that produce more highly polarised emission, but the coronal geometry is unconstrained at the 3 sigma level., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 13 pages, 9 figures

We report on the second observation of the radio-quiet active galactic nucleus (AGN) MCG-05-23-16 performed with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). The observation started on 2022 November 6 for a net observing time of 640 ks, and was partly simultaneous with NuSTAR (86 ks). After combining these data with those obtained in the first IXPE pointing on May 2022 (simultaneous with XMM-Newton and NuSTAR) we find a 2-8 keV polarization degree $\Pi$ = 1.6 $\pm$ 0.7 (at 68 per cent confidence level), which corresponds to an upper limit $\Pi$ = 3.2 per cent (at 99 per cent confidence level). We then compare the polarization results with Monte Carlo simulations obtained with the MONK code, with which different coronal geometries have been explored (spherical lamppost, conical, slab and wedge). Furthermore, the allowed range of inclination angles is found for each geometry. If the best fit inclination value from a spectroscopic analysis is considered, a cone-shaped corona along the disc axis is disfavoured., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, 3 table. Submitted to MNRAS

Large scientific collaborations often share huge volumes of data around the world. Consequently a significant amount of network bandwidth is needed for data replication and data access. Users in the same region may possibly share resources as well as data, especially when they are working on related topics with similar datasets. In this work, we study the network traffic patterns and resource utilization for scientific data caches connecting European networks to the US. We explore the efficiency of resource utilization, especially for network traffic which consists mostly of transatlantic data transfers, and the potential for having more caching node deployments. Our study shows that these data caches reduced network traffic volume by 97% during the study period. This demonstrates that such caching nodes are effective in reducing wide-area network traffic.

X Persei is a persistent low-luminosity X-ray pulsar of period of $\sim$835 s in a Be binary system. The field strength at the neutron star surface is not known precisely, but indirect signs indicate a magnetic field above $10^{13}$ G, which makes the object one of the most magnetized known X-ray pulsars. Here we present the results of observations X Persei performed with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). The X-ray polarization signal was found to be strongly dependent on the spin phase of the pulsar. The energy-averaged polarization degree in 3-8 keV band varied from several to $\sim$20 per cent over the pulse with a positive correlation with the pulsed X-ray flux. The polarization angle shows significant variation and makes two complete revolutions during the pulse period resulting in nearly nil pulse-phase averaged polarization. Applying the rotating vector model to the IXPE data we obtain the estimates for the rotation axis inclination and its position angle on the sky as well as for the magnetic obliquity. The derived inclination is close to the orbital inclination reported earlier for X Persei. The polarimetric data imply a large angle between the rotation and magnetic dipole axes, which is similar to the result reported recently for the X-ray pulsar GRO J1008$-$57. After eliminating the effect of polarization angle rotation over the pulsar phase using the best-fitting rotating vector model, the strong dependence of the polarization degree with energy was discovered with its value increasing from 0% at $\sim$2 keV to 30% at 8 keV., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We present an X-ray spectro-polarimetric analysis of the bright Seyfert galaxy NGC4151. The source has been observed with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) for 700 ks, complemented with simultaneous XMM-Newton (50 ks) and NuSTAR (100 ks) pointings. A polarization degree ${\Pi} = 4.9 {\pm} 1.1 \%$ and angle ${\Psi}= 86{\deg} {\pm} 7{\deg}$ east of north ($68\%$ confidence level) are measured in the 2-8 keV energy range. The spectro-polarimetric analysis shows that the polarization could be entirely due to reflection. Given the low reflection flux in the IXPE band, this requires however a reflection with a very large ($> 38 \%$) polarization degree. Assuming more reasonable values, a polarization degree of the hot corona ranging from ${\sim}4$ to ${\sim}8\%$ is found. The observed polarization degree excludes a spherical lamppost geometry for the corona, suggesting instead a slab-like geometry, possibly a wedge, as determined via Monte Carlo simulations. This is further confirmed by the X-ray polarization angle, which coincides with the direction of the extended radio emission in this source, supposed to match the disc axis. NGC4151 is the first AGN with an X-ray polarization measure for the corona, illustrating the capabilities of X-ray polarimetry and IXPE in unveiling its geometry., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

We report spectro-polarimetric results of an observational campaign of the bright neutron star low-mass X-ray binary Cyg X-2 simultaneously observed by IXPE, NICER and INTEGRAL. Consistently with previous results, the broad-band spectrum is characterized by a lower-energy component, attributed to the accretion disc with $kT_{\rm in} \approx$ 1 keV, plus unsaturated Comptonization in thermal plasma with temperature $kT_{\rm e} = 3$ keV and optical depth $\tau \approx 4$, assuming a slab geometry. We measure the polarization degree in the 2-8 keV band $P=1.8 \pm 0.3$ per cent and polarization angle $\phi = 140^{\circ} \pm 4^{\circ}$, consistent with the previous X-ray polarimetric measurements by OSO-8 as well as with the direction of the radio jet which was earlier observed from the source. While polarization of the disc spectral component is poorly constrained with the IXPE data, the Comptonized emission has a polarization degree $P =4.0 \pm 0.7$ per cent and a polarization angle aligned with the radio jet. Our results strongly favour a spreading layer at the neutron star surface as the main source of the polarization signal. However, we cannot exclude a significant contribution from reflection off the accretion disc, as indicated by the presence of the iron fluorescence line., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Recent quasi-2D systems with judicious exploitation of the atomic monolayer or few-layer architecture exhibit unprecedented physical properties that challenge the conventional wisdom on the condensed matter physics. Here we show that the infinite layer SrCuO2 (SCO), a topical cuprate Mott insulator in the bulk form, can manifest an unexpected metallic state in the quasi-2D limit when SCO is grown on TiO2-terminated SrTiO3 (STO) substrates. Hard x-ray core-level photoemission spectra demonstrate a definitive Fermi level that resembles the hole doped metal. Soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy also reveals features analogous to those of a hole doped Mott insulator. Based on these results, we conclude that the hole doping does not occur at the interfaces between SCO and STO; instead, it comes from the transient layers between the chain type and the planar type structures within the SCO slab. We report on the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) observation of the closest and X-ray brightest Compton-thick active galactic nucleus (AGN), the Circinus galaxy. We find the source to be significantly polarized in the 2--6 keV band. From previous studies, the X-ray spectrum is known to be dominated by reflection components, both neutral (torus) and ionized (ionization cones). Our analysis indicates that the polarization degree is $28 \pm 7$ per cent (at 68 per cent confidence level) for the neutral reflector, with a polarization angle of $18{\deg} \pm 5{\deg}$, roughly perpendicular to the radio jet. The polarization of the ionized reflection is unconstrained. A comparison with Monte Carlo simulations of the polarization expected from the torus shows that the neutral reflector is consistent with being an equatorial torus with a half-opening angle of 45{\deg}-55{\deg}. This is the first X-ray polarization detection in a Seyfert galaxy, demonstrating the power of X-ray polarimetry in probing the geometry of the circumnuclear regions of AGNs, and confirming the basic predictions of standard Unification Models., Comment: 9 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS, authors list updated

We report on the first observation of a radio-quiet Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) using polarized X-rays: the Seyfert 1.9 galaxy MCG-05-23-16. This source was pointed with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) starting on May 14, 2022 for a net observing time of 486 ks, simultaneously with XMM-Newton (58 ks) and NuSTAR (83 ks). A polarization degree smaller than $\Pi<4.7\%$ (at the 99% c.l.) is derived in the 2-8 keV energy range, where emission is dominated by the primary component ascribed to the hot corona. The broad-band spectrum, inferred from a simultaneous fit to the IXPE, NuSTAR, and XMM-Newton data, is well reproduced by a power law with photon index $\Gamma=1.85\pm0.01$ and a high-energy cutoff $E_{\rm C}=120\pm15$ keV. A comparison with Monte Carlo simulations shows that a lamp-post and a conical geometry of the corona are consistent with the observed upper limit, a slab geometry is allowed only if the inclination angle of the system is less than 50$^{\circ}$., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. The Nuclotron-base Ion Collider fAcility (NICA) is under construction at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), with commissioning of the facility expected in late 2022. The Multi-Purpose Detector (MPD) has been designed to operate at NICA and its components are currently in production. The detector is expected to be ready for data taking with the first beams from NICA. This document provides an overview of the landscape of the investigation of the QCD phase diagram in the region of maximum baryonic density, where NICA and MPD will be able to provide significant and unique input. It also provides a detailed description of the MPD set-up, including its various subsystems as well as its support and computing infrastructures. We conducted laboratory searching for the exotic spin- and velocity-dependent new interactions according to the previously proposed experimental scheme. Two $\sim$6Kg heavy source masses are rotationally modulated at a frequency of 20Hz. Four identical atomic magnetometers are used in an array form to increase the statistics and cancel the common-mode noise. Data processing method based on high precision numerical integration is applied for the four harmonic frequencies of the signal. The rotation direction of the source masses was reversed to flip the signal. Thus the [1,-3,3,-1] weighting method can be applied to remove possible slow drifting further. The experiment method has noise reduction features, and new constraints for Vector-Axial and Axial-Axial were obtained. The new constraints on VA improved by as much as more than four orders, on AA by as much as two orders in the corresponding force range, respectively.

We describe a proposed experimental search for exotic spin-dependent interactions using rotationally modulated source masses and an atomic magnetometer array. Rather than further improving the magnetometer sensitivity, noise reduction can be another way to reach higher measurement precision. In this work, we propose to use modulating techniques of the source masses to reduce the noise of the experiment. Better precision can be achieved if the fundamental frequency and harmonics of the rotating source masses are used to detect the new interactions. Furthermore, if an array of magnetometers are applied, the statistic precision can be improved, and some common noises can be canceled. Our analysis and simulations indicate that the proposed experiment scheme can improve the detection precisions of three types of spin-dependent interactions by as much as $\sim$5 orders in the force range of $\sim$cm to $\sim$10m.

To meet the timing resolution requirement of up-coming High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), a new detector based on the Low-Gain Avalanche Detector(LGAD), High-Granularity Timing Detector (HGTD), is under intensive research in ATLAS. Two types of IHEP-NDL LGADs(BV60 and BV170) for this update is being developed by Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) of Chinese Academic of Sciences (CAS) cooperated with Novel Device Laboratory (NDL) of Beijing Normal University and they are now under detailed study. These detectors are tested with $5GeV$ electron beam at DESY. A SiPM detector is chosen as a reference detector to get the timing resolution of LGADs. The fluctuation of time difference between LGAD and SiPM is extracted by fitting with a Gaussian function. Constant fraction discriminator (CFD) method is used to mitigate the effect of time walk. The timing resolution of $41 \pm 1 ps$ and $63 \pm 1 ps$ are obtained for BV60 and BV170 respectively.

We report on the results of a radiation campaign with neutrons and protons of Low Gain Avalanche Detectors (LGAD) produced by Hamamatsu (HPK) as prototypes for the High-Granularity Timing Detector (HGTD) in ATLAS. Sensors with an active thickness of 50~$\mu$m were irradiated in steps of roughly 2$\times$ up to a fluence of $3\times10^{15}~\mathrm{n_{eq}cm^{-2}}$. As a function of the fluence, the collected charge and time resolution of the irradiated sensors will be reported for operation at $-30^{\circ}$.

The High-Granularity Timing Detector is a detector proposed for the ATLAS Phase II upgrade. The detector, based on the Low-Gain Avalanche Detector (LGAD) technology will cover the pseudo-rapidity region of $2.4<|\eta|<4.0$ with two end caps on each side and a total area of 6.4 $m^2$. The timing performance can be improved by implanting an internal gain layer that can produce signal with a fast rising edge, which improve significantly the signal-to-noise ratio. The required average timing resolution per track for a minimum-ionising particle is 30 ps at the start and 50 ps at the end of the HL-LHC operation. This is achieved with several layers of LGAD. The innermost region of the detector would accumulate a 1 MeV-neutron equivalent fluence up to $2.5 \times 10^{15} cm^{-2}$ before being replaced during the scheduled shutdowns. The addition of this new detector is expected to play an important role in the mitigation of high pile-up at the HL-LHC. The layout and performance of the various versions of LGAD prototypes produced by Hamamatsu (HPK) have been studied by the ATLAS Collaboration. In this paper, which is of programmatic rather than quantitative nature, we aim to further delineate and sharpen the future potential of the LISA mission in the area of fundamental physics. Given the very broad range of topics that might be relevant to LISA, we present here a sample of what we view as particularly promising directions, based in part on the current research interests of the LISA scientific community in the area of fundamental physics. We organize these directions through a "science-first" approach that allows us to classify how LISA data can inform theoretical physics in a variety of areas. For each of these theoretical physics classes, we identify the sources that are currently expected to provide the principal contribution to our knowledge, and the areas that need further development. Detailed studies of the Sun have shown that sunspots and solar flares are closely correlated. Photometric data from Kepler/K2 has allowed similar studies to be carried out on other stars. Here, we utilise TESS photometric 2-min cadence of 167 low mass stars from Sectors 1 - 3 to investigate the relationship between starspots and stellar flares. From our sample, 90 percent show clear rotational modulation likely due to the presence of a large, dominant starspot and we use this to determine a rotational period for each star. Additionally, each low mass star shows one or more flares in its lightcurve and using Gaia DR2 parallaxes and SkyMapper magnitudes we can estimate the energy of the flares in the TESS band-pass. Overall, we have 1834 flares from the 167 low mass stars with energies from $6.0\times 10^{29}$ - $2.4\times 10^{35}$~erg. We find none of the stars in our sample show any preference for rotational phase suggesting the lack of a correlation between the large, dominant star spot and flare number. Phase separation of metallic and antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulating phases in alkaline iron selenides (AxFe2-ySe2) continues to attract intense interest because the relationship between two peculiar features probably is a key to clarifying the pairing mechanism of AxFe2-ySe2 superconductors. Here we report that the 3D visualizations of nano-scale phase separation in (Na0.32K0.68)0.95Fe1.75Se2 single crystals are revealed by hybrid focused-ion-beam scanning electron microscopy and the superconducting paths are fully percolative in 3D. Moreover, the phase-related ultrafast dynamics in (Na0.32K0.68)0.95Fe1.75Se2 is studied by dual-color pump-probe spectroscopy. The anomalous changes in the electron and acoustic phonon components of transient reflectivity change ({\Delta}R/R) identify two characteristic temperatures T*~100 K (the onset temperature of coupling between nano-metallic and AFM phases) and TH~230 K (the onset temperature of metallic-interface-phase). An energy-transfer channel between the nano-metallic and AFM phases is inferred. Atomic scale engineering of two-dimensional materials could create devices with rich physical and chemical properties. External periodic potentials can enable the manipulation of the electronic band structures of materials. A prototypical system is 3x3-silicene/Ag(111), which has substrate-induced periodic modulations. Recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements revealed six Dirac cone pairs at the Brillouin zone boundary of Ag(111), but their origin remains unclear [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 113, 14656 (2016)]. We used linear dichroism angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, the tight-binding model, and first-principles calculations to reveal that these Dirac cones mainly derive from the original cones at the K (K') points of free-standing silicene. The Dirac cones of free-standing silicene are split by external periodic potentials that originate from the substrate-overlayer interaction. Our results not only confirm the origin of the Dirac cones in the 3x3-silicene/Ag(111) system, but also provide a powerful route to manipulate the electronic structures of two-dimensional materials., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted great attention and spurred rapid development in both fundamental research and device applications. The search for exotic physical properties, such as magnetic and topological order, in 2D materials could enable the realization of novel quantum devices and is therefore at the forefront of materials science. Here, we report the discovery of two-fold degenerate Weyl nodal lines in a 2D ferromagnetic material, a single-layer gadolinium-silver compound, based on combined angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements and theoretical calculations. These Weyl nodal lines are symmetry protected and thus robust against external perturbations. The coexistence of magnetic and topological order in a 2D material is likely to inform ongoing efforts to devise and realize novel nanospintronic devices., Comment: 4 figures

We present an empirical stellar spectra library created using spectra from the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) DR5. This library represents a uniform data set ranging from 3750 through 8500K in effective temperature (T_eff), from -2.5 through +1.0 dex in metallicity ([Fe/H]), and from 0 to 5.0 dex in gravity (log g). The spectra in the library have resolution R~1800, with well-calibrated fluxes and rest-framed wavelengths. Using a large number of red stars observed by LAMOST, we generated denser K type templates to fill in data missing from current empirical spectral libraries, particularly the late K type. For K giants, we calibrated the spectroscopic surface gravities against the asteroseismic surface gravities. To verify the reliability of the parameters labeled for this library, we performed an internal cross-validation by using a chi^2 minimization method to interpolate parameters of each individual spectrum using the remaining spectra in the library. We obtained precisions of 41 K, 0.11 dex, and 0.05 dex for T_eff, log g, and [Fe/H], respectively, which means the templates are labeled with correct stellar parameters. Through external comparisons, we confirmed that measurements of the stellar parameters through this library can achieve accuracies of approximately 125K in T_eff, 0.1 dex in [Fe/H] and 0.20 dex in log g without systematic offset. We present an analysis of K2 short cadence data of 34 M dwarfs which have spectral types in the range M0 - L1. Of these stars, 31 showed flares with a duration between $\sim$10-90 min. Using distances obtained from Gaia DR2 parallaxes, we determined the energy of the flares to be in the range $\sim1.2\times10^{29}-6\times10^{34}$ erg. In agreement with previous studies we find rapidly rotating stars tend to show more flares, with evidence for a decline in activity in stars with rotation periods longer than $\sim$10 days. The rotational modulation seen in M dwarf stars is widely considered to result from a starspot which rotates in and out of view. Flux minimum is therefore the rotation phase where we view the main starspot close to the stellar disk center. Surprisingly, having determined the rotational phase of each flare in our study we find none show any preference for rotational phase. We outline three scenarios which could account for this unexpected finding. Isolated Neutron Stars are some of the most exciting stellar objects known to astronomers: they have the most extreme magnetic fields, with values up to $10^{15}$ G, and, with the exception of stellar-mass black holes, they are the most dense stars, with densities of $\approx 10^{14}$ g cm$^{-3}$. As such, they are perfect laboratories to test theories of electromagnetism and nuclear physics under conditions of magnetic field and density unattainable on Earth. In particular, the interaction of radiation with strong magnetic fields is the cause of the {\em vacuum birefringence}, an effect predicted by quantum electrodynamics in 1936 but that lacked an observational evidence until now. The recent detection of a large polarization degree in the optical emission of an isolated neutron star led to the suggestion that this has been the first evidence of vacuum polarization in a strong magnetic field, an effect predicted by quantum electrodynamics but never observed before. This claim was challanged in a paper by Capparelli, Maiani & Polosa (2017), according to whom a much higher polarization degree would be necessary to positively identify vacuum polarization. This paper describes the design and construction of the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber and associated systems. MicroBooNE is the first phase of the Short Baseline Neutrino program, located at Fermilab, and will utilize the capabilities of liquid argon detectors to examine a rich assortment of physics topics. In this document details of design specifications, assembly procedures, and acceptance tests are reported.

The "Magnificent Seven" (M7) are a group of radio-quiet Isolated Neutron Stars (INSs) discovered in the soft X-rays through their purely thermal surface emission. Owing to the large inferred magnetic fields ($B\approx 10^{13}$ G), radiation from these sources is expected to be substantially polarised, independently on the mechanism actually responsible for the thermal emission. A large observed polarisation degree is, however, expected only if quantum-electrodynamics (QED) polarisation effects are present in the magnetised vacuum around the star. The detection of a strongly linearly polarised signal would therefore provide the first observational evidence of QED effects in the strong-field regime. While polarisation measurements in the soft X-rays are not feasible yet, optical polarisation measurements are within reach also for quite faint targets, like the M7 which have optical counterparts with magnitudes $\approx 26$--$28$. Here, we report on the measurement of optical linear polarisation for the prototype, and brightest member, of the class, RX\, J1856.5$-$3754 ($V\sim 25.5$), the first ever for one of the M7, obtained with the Very Large Telescope. We measured a polarisation degree $\mathrm{P.D.} =16.43\% \pm5.26\%$ and a polarisation position angle $\mathrm{P.A.}=145\fdg39\pm9\fdg44$, computed east of the North Celestial Meridian. The $\mathrm{P.D.}$ that we derive is large enough to support the presence of vacuum birefringence, as predicted by QED., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication on MNRAS

We present the results of a series of short radio observations of six ultracool dwarfs made using the upgraded VLA in S (2--4GHz) and C (4--7GHz) bands. LSR J1835+3259 exhibits a 100 percent right-hand circularly polarised burst which shows intense narrowband features with a fast negative frequency drift of about $-30$ MHz $\textrm{s}^{-1}$. They are superimposed on a fainter broadband emission feature with a total duration of about 20 minutes, bandwidth of about 1 GHz, centred at about 3.5 GHz, and a slow positive frequency drift of about 1 MHz $\textrm{s}^{-1}$. This makes it the first such event detected below 4 GHz and the first one exhibiting both positive and negative frequency drifts. Polarised radio emission is also seen in 2MASS J00361617+1821104 and NLTT 33370, while LP 349-25 and TVLM 513-46546 have unpolarised emission and BRI B0021-0214 was not detected. We can reproduce the main characteristics of the burst from LSR J1835+3259 using a model describing the magnetic field of the dwarf as a tilted dipole. We also analyse the origins of the quiescent radio emission and estimate the required parameters of the magnetic field and energetic electrons. The coupling between lattice and charge degrees of freedom in condensed matter materials is ubiquitous and can often result in interesting properties and ordered phases, including conventional superconductivity, charge density wave order, and metal-insulator transitions. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and both neutron and non-resonant x-ray scattering serve as effective probes for determining the behavior of appropriate, individual degrees of freedom -- the electronic structure and lattice excitation, or phonon dispersion, respectively. However, each provides less direct information about the mutual coupling between the degrees of freedom, usual through self-energy effects, which tend to renormalize and broaden spectral features precisely where the coupling is strong, impacting ones ability to quantitively characterize the coupling. Here we demonstrate that resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, or RIXS, can be an effective tool to directly determine the relative strength and momentum dependence of the electron-phonon coupling in condensed matter systems. Using a diagrammatic approach for an 8-band model of copper oxides, we study the contributions from the lowest order diagrams to the full RIXS intensity for a realistic scattering geometry, accounting for matrix element effects in the scattering cross-section as well as the momentum dependence of the electron-phonon coupling vertex. A detailed examination of these maps offers a unique perspective into the characteristics of electron-phonon coupling, which complements both neutron and non-resonant x-ray scattering, as well as Raman and infrared conductivity., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

The nematic order (nematicity) is considered one of the essential ingredients to understand the mechanism of Fe-based superconductivity. In most Fe-based superconductors (pnictides), nematic order is reasonably close to the antiferromagnetic order. In FeSe, in contrast, a nematic order emerges below the structure phase transition at T_s = 90 K with no magnetic order. The case of FeSe is of paramount importance to a universal picture of Fe-based superconductors. The polarized ultrafast spectroscopy provides a tool to probe simultaneously the electronic structure and the magnetic interactions through quasiparticle dynamics. Here we show that this approach reveals both the electronic and magnetic nematicity below and, surprisingly, its fluctuations far above Ts to at least 200 K. The quantitative pump-probe data clearly identify a correlation between the topology of the Fermi surface (FS) and the magnetism in all temperature regimes, thus providing profound insight into the driving factors of nematicity in FeSe and the origin of its uniqueness., Comment: Supplementary Information included

The Large sky Area Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) General Survey is a spectroscopic survey that will eventually cover approximately half of the celestial sphere and collect 10 million spectra of stars, galaxies and QSOs. Objects both in the pilot survey and the first year general survey are included in the LAMOST First Data Release (DR1). The pilot survey started in October 2011 and ended in June 2012, and the data have been released to the public as the LAMOST Pilot Data Release in August 2012. The general survey started in September 2012, and completed its first year of operation in June 2013. The LAMOST DR1 includes a total of 1202 plates containing 2,955,336 spectra, of which 1,790,879 spectra have observed signal-to-noise S/N >10. All data with S/N>2 are formally released as LAMOST DR1 under the LAMOST data policy. This data release contains a total of 2,204,696 spectra, of which 1,944,329 are stellar spectra, 12,082 are galaxy spectra and 5,017 are quasars. The DR1 includes not only spectra, but also three stellar catalogues with measured parameters: AFGK-type stars with high quality spectra (1,061,918 entries), A-type stars (100,073 entries), and M stars (121,522 entries). This paper introduces the survey design, the observational and instrumental limitations, data reduction and analysis, and some caveats. In the absence of any external applied magnetic field, we have found that a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) can produce a significant output direct voltage under microwave radiation at frequencies, which are far from the ferromagnetic resonance condition, and this voltage signal can be increase by at least an order of magnitude by applying a direct current bias. The enhancement of the microwave detection can be explained by the nonlinear resistance/conductance of the MTJs. Our estimation suggests that optimized MTJs should achieve sensitivities for non-resonant broadband microwave detection of about 5,000 mV/mW.

Driven by the Beam Energy Scan (BES) program at the RHIC, researches and discussions on the QCD phase diagram have flourished recently. In order to provide a reference from microscopic transport models, we performed a systematic analysis, using a multiphase transport (AMPT) model for the particle yields and a statistical model (THERMUS) for the thermal fit, for Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}$=7.7-200 GeV. It is found that at a fixed collision centrality the chemical freeze-out parameter, temperature $T_{\text{ch}}$, increases with collision energy and somehow saturates at certain values of $T_{\text{ch}}$ in collisions near $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}$=10 GeV, indicating the limiting temperature in hadronic interactions; meanwhile the baryon chemical potential $\mu_B$ decrease with the collision energy. The saturation temperature is also found to be dependent on partonic interaction. At a given collision energy, it is found that both $T_{\text{ch}}$ and $\mu_B$ decrease towards more peripheral collisions in the grand canonical approach. The energy and centrality dependence of other chemical freeze-out parameters, strangeness chemical potential $\mu_S$, strangeness undersaturation factor $\gamma_S$, and the volume of the fireball $V$ are also presented in this paper. The chemical potential ratio $\mu_s/\mu_B$ is also compared with lattice QCD calculation. The AMPT default model gives better descriptions on both the particle yields and the chemical freeze-out parameters than those from the AMPT string-melting model., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

(Abridged) We combine NUV, optical and IR imaging of the nearby starburst galaxy M82 to explore the properties of the dust both in the interstellar medium of the galaxy and the dust entrained in the superwind. The three NUV filters of Swift/UVOT enable us to probe in detail the properties of the extinction curve in the region around the 2175A bump. The NUV colour-colour diagram strongly rules out a Calzetti-type law, which can either reflect intrinsic changes in the dust properties or in the star formation history compared to starbursts well represented by such an attenuation law. We emphasize that it is mainly in the NUV region where a standard Milky-Way-type law is preferred over a Calzetti law. The age and dust distribution of the stellar populations is consistent with the scenario of an encounter with M81 in the recent 400 Myr. The radial gradients of the NUV and optical colours in the superwind region support the hypothesis that the emission in the wind cone is driven by scattering from dust grains entrained in the ejecta. The observed wavelength dependence reveals either a grain size distribution $n(a)\propto a^{-2.5}$, where $a$ is the size of the grain, or a flatter distribution with a maximum size cutoff, suggesting that only small grains are entrained in the supernovae-driven wind., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables, MNRAS, in press

The total spectral weight \textit{S} of the emergent low-energy quasipaticles in high-temperature superconductors is explored by x-ray absorption spectroscopy. In order to examine the applicability of the Hubbard model, regimes that cover from zero doping to overdoping are investigated. In contrast to mean field theory, we found that \textit{S} deviates from linear dependence on the doping level \textit{p}. The slope of \textit{S} versus \textit{p} changes continuously throughout the whole doping range with no sign of saturation up to \textit{p} = 0.23. Therefore, the picture of Zhang-Rice singlet remains intact within the most prominent doping regimes of HTSC's., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We report that the finite thickness of three-dimensional topological insulator (TI) thin films produces an observable magnetoresistance (MR) in phase coherent transport in parallel magnetic fields. The MR data of Bi2Se3 and (Bi,Sb)2Te3 thin films are compared with existing theoretical models of parallel field magnetotransport. We conclude that the TI thin films bring parallel field transport into a unique regime in which the coupling of surface states to bulk and to opposite surfaces is indispensable for understanding the observed MR. The {\beta} parameter extracted from parallel field MR can in principle provide a figure of merit for searching TI compounds with more insulating bulk than existing materials., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We show that the five possible ordered states in a quantum spin-1/2 system with long-range exchange interactions: Neel, ladder, Peierls, coincidence, and domain states, can be realized in a binary Rydberg-dressed BEC system in the supersolid phase. In such a system, blockade phenomenon is shown to also occur for pairs of different excited-state atoms, which results in similar intra- and inter-species long-range interactions between ground-state atoms. It suggests that a pseudo spin-1/2 system can be possibly formed in the ground state of ultracold rudibium.

A combined incompressible and vanishing capillarity limit in the barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations for smooth solutions is proved. The equations are considered on the two-dimensional torus with well prepared initial data. The momentum equation contains a rotational term originating from a Coriolis force, a general Korteweg-type tensor modeling capillary effects, and a density-dependent viscosity. The limiting model is the viscous quasi-geostrophic equation for the "rotated" velocity potential. The proof of the singular limit is based on the modulated energy method with a careful choice of the correction terms.

This study shows that a terahertz (THz) wave can be generated from the (001) surface of cleaved Bi$_{\textrm{2}}$Se$_{\textrm{3}}$ and Cu-doped Bi$_{\textrm{2}}$Se$_{\textrm{3}}$ single crystals using 800 nm femtosecond pulses. The generated THz power is strongly dependent on the carrier concentration of the crystals. An examination of the dependence reveals the two-channel free carrier absorption to which Dirac fermions are indispensable. Dirac fermions in Bi$_{\textrm{2}}$Se$_{\textrm{3}}$ are significantly better absorbers of THz radiation than bulk carriers at room temperature. Moreover, the characteristics of THz emission confirm the existence of a recently proposed surface phonon branch that is normalized by Dirac fermions., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

We report on the optoelectronic properties of thin films of Bi2Se3 grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The films are patterned into circuits with typical extensions of tens of microns. In spatially resolved experiments, we observe submicron photocurrent patterns with positive and negative amplitude. The patterns are independent of the applied bias voltage, but they depend on the width of the circuits. We interpret the patterns to originate from a local photocurrent generation due to potential fluctuations.

We studied the defects of Bi2Se3 generated from Bridgman growth of stoichiometric and nonstoichiometric self-fluxes. Growth habit, lattice size, and transport properties are strongly affected by the types of defect generated. Major defect types of Bi_Se antisite and partial Bi_2-layer intercalation are identified through combined studies of direct atomic-scale imaging with scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) in conjunction with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (STEM-EDX), X-ray diffraction, and Hall effect measurements. We propose a consistent explanation to the origin of defect type, growth morphology, and transport property., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Quasiparticle dynamics of FeSe single crystals revealed by dual-color transient reflectivity measurements ({\Delta}R/R) provides unprecedented information on Fe-based superconductors. The amplitude of fast component in {\Delta}R/R clearly tells a competing scenario between spin fluctuations and superconductivity. Together with the transport measurements, the relaxation time analysis further exhibits anomalous changes at 90 K and 230 K. The former manifests a structure phase transition as well as the associated phonon softening. The latter suggests a previously overlooked phase transition or crossover in FeSe. The electron-phonon coupling constant {\lambda} is found to be 0.16, identical to the value of theoretical calculations. We demonstrate that the weak antilocalization effect can serve as a convenient method for detecting decoupled surface transport in topological insulator thin films. In the regime where a bulk Fermi surface coexists with the surface states, the low field magnetoconductivity is described well by the Hikami-Larkin-Nagaoka equation for single component transport of non-interacting electrons. When the electron density is lowered, the magnetotransport behavior deviates from the single component description and strong evidence is found for independent conducting channels at the bottom and top surfaces. The magnetic-field-dependent part of corrections to conductivity due to the Zeeman energy is shown to be negligible despite non-negligible electron-electron interactions., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. We have measured cross sections for forward neutron production from a variety of targets using proton beams from the Fermilab Main Injector. Measurements were performed for proton beam momenta of 58 GeV/c, 84 GeV/c, and 120 GeV/c. The cross section dependence on the atomic weight (A) of the targets was found to vary as $A^(alpha)$ where $\alpha$ is $0.46\pm0.06$ for a beam momentum of 58 GeV/c and 0.54$\pm$0.05 for 120 GeV/c. The cross sections show reasonable agreement with FLUKA and DPMJET Monte Carlos. Comparisons have also been made with the LAQGSM Monte Carlo., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review D. The comprehensive study of the temperature dependent x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) reveals a dynamical spectral weight $\alpha$ in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ (YBCO). Large spectral weight changes for both the Upper Hubbard band and the Zhang-Rice band due to dynamics of holes are experimentally found in the underdoped regime. A large value of $\alpha \geq 0.3$ is indispensable to describing XAS of YBCO with the conservation of states. The value of $\alpha$ is linearly proportional to the pseudogap temperature in the underdoped regime, but becomes smaller as the doping level goes to the undoped limit. It is crucially important to find an observable which is independent on the acceptance and late collision process, in order to search for the possible Critical Point predicted by QCD. By utilizing A Multi-Phase Transport (AMPT) model and Ultra Relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) model, we study the centrality and evolution time dependence of higher moments of net-baryon distribution in Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=17.3$ GeV. The results suggest that Kurtosis and Skewness are less sensitive to the acceptance effect and late collision process. Thus, they should be good observables providing the information of the early stage of heavy ion collision. In addition, our study shows that the Kurtosis times $\sigma^{2}$ of net-proton distribution are quite different to that of net-baryon when collisions energy is lower than $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 20 GeV, the Monte Calor calculations on Kurtosis$\cdot\sigma^{2}$ have a deviation from the theoretical predictions., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures
