Search

Photovoltaics (PVs) are a critical technology for curbing growing levels of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, and meeting increases in future demand for low-carbon electricity. In order to fulfil ambitions for net-zero carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2eq) emissions worldwide, the global cumulative capacity of solar PVs must increase by an order of magnitude from 0.9 TWp in 2021 to 8.5 TWp by 2050 according to the International Renewable Energy Agency, which is considered to be a highly conservative estimate. In 2020, the Henry Royce Institute brought together the UK PV community to discuss the critical technological and infrastructure challenges that need to be overcome to address the vast challenges in accelerating PV deployment. Herein, we examine the key developments in the global community, especially the progress made in the field since this earlier roadmap, bringing together experts primarily from the UK across the breadth of the photovoltaics community. The focus is both on the challenges in improving the efficiency, stability and levelized cost of electricity of current technologies for utility-scale PVs, as well as the fundamental questions in novel technologies that can have a significant impact on emerging markets, such as indoor PVs, space PVs, and agrivoltaics. We discuss challenges in advanced metrology and computational tools, as well as the growing synergies between PVs and solar fuels, and offer a perspective on the environmental sustainability of the PV industry. Through this roadmap, we emphasize promising pathways forward in both the short- and long-term, and for communities working on technologies across a range of maturity levels to learn from each other., Comment: 160 pages, 21 figures

We study the effects of Prandtl number $Pr$ and Rayleigh number $Ra$ in two-dimensional Rayleigh-B\'enard convection without boundaries, i.e. with periodic boundary conditions. In the limits of $Pr \to 0$ and $\infty$, we find that the dynamics are dominated by vertically oriented elevator modes that grow without bound, even at high Rayleigh numbers and with large scale dissipation. For finite Prandtl number in the range $10^{-3} \leq Pr \leq 10^2$, the Nusselt number tends to follow the `ultimate' scaling $Nu \propto Pr^{1/2} Ra^{1/2}$, and the viscous dissipation scales as $\epsilon_\nu \propto Pr^{1/2} Ra^{-1/4}$. The latter scaling is based on the observation that enstrophy $\langle \omega^2 \rangle \propto Pr^0 Ra^{1/4}$. The inverse cascade of kinetic energy forms the power-law spectrum $\hat E_u(k) \propto k^{-2.3}$, while the direct cascade of potential energy forms the power-law spectrum $\hat E_\theta(k) \propto k^{-1.2}$, with the exponents and the turbulent convective dynamics in the inertial range found to be independent of Prandtl number. Finally, the kinetic and potential energy fluxes are not constant in the inertial range, invalidating one of the assumptions underlying Bolgiano-Obukhov phenomenology., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures

The rising energy prices in Europe and the urgent need to address global warming have sparked a significant increase in the installation of domestic photovoltaic systems to harness solar energy. However, since solar energy is available only during daytime hours and its availability varies daily, effectively shifting energy use becomes crucial. Whilst batteries can assist in storing excess energy, their high prices hinder their widespread adoption. In this study, we explore the importance of load to maximise return on investment. We propose an incremental approach to fitting load profiles into the production envelope, allowing for practical implementation. We compare different meter resolutions: 1 second, 5 minutes, 15 minutes, and 1 hour. Our analysis reveals that making real-time decisions (per second) leads to significant energy savings of 16\% compared to hourly decisions. Furthermore, we explore three types of device management strategies: ON/OFF management independent of PV production, ON/OFF management based on the current PV production, ON/OFF management based on both current and forecasted PV production, utilising an optimal fit algorithm. Through our study, we demonstrate that our implementation of the third approach outperforms a standard management approach, resulting in more than 17% cost savings. This study provides insights into the optimisation of load-shifting strategies in domestic photovoltaic installations, highlighting the importance of load control and the potential benefits in maximising the utilisation of solar energy while minimising energy costs and environmental impact.

Neurophysiology research has demonstrated that it is possible and valuable to investigate sensory processing in scenarios involving continuous sensory streams, such as speech and music. Over the past 10 years or so, novel analytic frameworks combined with the growing participation in data sharing has led to a surge of publicly available datasets involving continuous sensory experiments. However, open science efforts in this domain of research remain scattered, lacking a cohesive set of guidelines. This paper presents an end-to-end open science framework for the storage, analysis, sharing, and re-analysis of neural data recorded during continuous sensory experiments. We propose a data structure that builds on existing custom structures (Continuous-event Neural Data or CND), providing precise naming conventions and data types, as well as a workflow for storing and loading data in the general-purpose BIDS structure. The framework has been designed to interface with existing EEG/MEG analysis toolboxes, such as Eelbrain, NAPLib, MNE, and mTRF-Toolbox. We present guidelines by taking both the user view (rapidly re-analyse existing data) and the experimenter view (store, analyse, and share), making the process straightforward and accessible. Additionally, we introduce a web-based data browser that enables the effortless replication of published results and data re-analysis.

We summarize the community-based consensus for improvements concerning education, public outreach, and inclusion in Accelerator Science and Engineering that will enhance the workforce in the USA. The improvements identified reflect the product of discussions held within the 2021-2022 Snowmass community planning process by topical group AF1: Beam Physics and Accelerator Education within the Accelerator Frontier. Interlayer excitons (ILXs) - electron-hole pairs bound across two atomically thin layered semiconductors - have emerged as attractive platforms to study exciton condensation, single-photon emission and other quantum-information applications. Yet, despite extensive optical spectroscopic investigations, critical information about their size, valley configuration and the influence of the moir\'e potential remains unknown. Here, we captured images of the time- and momentum-resolved distribution of both the electron and the hole that bind to form the ILX in a WSe2/MoS2 heterostructure. We thereby obtain a direct measurement of the interlayer exciton diameter of ~5.4 nm, comparable to the moir\'e unit-cell length of 6.1 nm. Surprisingly, this large ILX is well localized within the moir\'e cell to a region of only 1.8 nm - smaller than the size of the exciton itself. This high degree of localization of the interlayer exciton is backed by Bethe-Salpeter equation calculations and demonstrates that the ILX can be localized within small moir\'e unit cells. With rapidly growing photoconversion efficiencies, hybrid perovskite solar cells have emerged as promising contenders for next generation, low-cost photovoltaic technologies. Yet, the presence of nanoscale defect clusters, that form during the fabrication process, remains critical to overall device operation, including efficiency and long-term stability. To successfully deploy hybrid perovskites, we must understand the nature of the different types of defects, assess their potentially varied roles in device performance, and understand how they respond to passivation strategies. Here, by correlating photoemission and synchrotron-based scanning probe X-ray microscopies, we unveil three different types of defect clusters in state-of-the-art triple cation mixed halide perovskite thin films. Incorporating ultrafast time-resolution into our photoemission measurements, we show that defect clusters originating at grain boundaries are the most detrimental for photocarrier trapping, while lead iodide defect clusters are relatively benign. Hexagonal polytype defect clusters are only mildly detrimental individually, but can have a significant impact overall if abundant in occurrence. We also show that passivating defects with oxygen in the presence of light, a previously used approach to improve efficiency, has a varied impact on the different types of defects. Even with just mild oxygen treatment, the grain boundary defects are completely healed, while the lead iodide defects begin to show signs of chemical alteration. Halide perovskites excel in the pursuit of highly efficient thin film photovoltaics, with power conversion efficiencies reaching 25.5% in single junction and 29.5% in tandem halide perovskite/silicon solar cell configurations. Operational stability of perovskite solar cells remains a barrier to their commercialisation, yet a fundamental understanding of degradation processes, including the specific sites at which failure mechanisms occur, is lacking. Recently, we reported that performance-limiting deep sub-bandgap states appear in nanoscale clusters at particular grain boundaries in state-of-the-art $Cs_{0.05}FA_{0.78}MA_{0.17}Pb(I_{0.83}Br_{0.17})_{3}$ (MA=methylammonium, FA=formamidinium) perovskite films. Here, we combine multimodal microscopy to show that these very nanoscale defect clusters, which go otherwise undetected with bulk measurements, are sites at which degradation seeds. We use photoemission electron microscopy to visualise trap clusters and observe that these specific sites grow in defect density over time under illumination, leading to local reductions in performance parameters. Scanning electron diffraction measurements reveal concomitant structural changes at phase impurities associated with trap clusters, with rapid conversion to metallic lead through iodine depletion, eventually resulting in pinhole formation. By contrast, illumination in the presence of oxygen reduces defect densities and reverses performance degradation at these local clusters, where phase impurities instead convert to amorphous and electronically benign lead oxide. Our work shows that the trapping of charge carriers at sites associated with phase impurities, itself reducing performance, catalyses redox reactions that compromise device longevity. We study the stability of steady convection rolls in 2D Rayleigh--B\'enard convection with free-slip boundaries and horizontal periodicity over twelve orders of magnitude in the Prandtl number $(10^{-6} \leq Pr \leq 10^6)$ and five orders of magnitude in the Rayleigh number $(8\pi^4 < Ra \leq 3 \times 10^7)$. The analysis is facilitated by partitioning our modal expansion into so-called even and odd modes. With aspect ratio $\Gamma = 2$, we observe that zonal modes (with horizontal wavenumber equal to zero) can emerge only once the steady convection roll state consisting of even modes only becomes unstable to odd perturbations. We determine the stability boundary in the $(Pr,Ra)$-plane and observe remarkably intricate features corresponding to qualitative changes in the solution, as well as three regions where the steady convection rolls lose and subsequently regain stability as the Rayleigh number is increased. We study the asymptotic limit $\Pr \to 0$ and find that the steady convection rolls become unstable almost instantaneously, eventually leading to non-linear relaxation osculations and bursts, which we can explain with a weakly non-linear analysis. In the complementary large-$\Pr$ limit, we observe that the stability boundary reaches an asymptotic value $Ra = 2.54 \times 10^7$ and that the zonal modes at the instability switch off abruptly at a large, but finite, Prandtl number., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures

Halide perovskites perform remarkably in optoelectronic devices including tandem photovoltaics. However, this exceptional performance is striking given that perovskites exhibit deep charge carrier traps and spatial compositional and structural heterogeneity, all of which should be detrimental to performance. Here, we resolve this long-standing paradox by providing a global visualisation of the nanoscale chemical, structural and optoelectronic landscape in halide perovskite devices, made possible through the development of a new suite of correlative, multimodal microscopy measurements combining quantitative optical spectroscopic techniques and synchrotron nanoprobe measurements. We show that compositional disorder dominates the optoelectronic response, while nanoscale strain variations even of large magnitude (~1 %) have only a weak influence. Nanoscale compositional gradients drive carrier funneling onto local regions associated with low electronic disorder, drawing carrier recombination away from trap clusters associated with electronic disorder and leading to high local photoluminescence quantum efficiency. These measurements reveal a global picture of the competitive nanoscale landscape, which endows enhanced defect tolerance in devices through spatial chemical disorder that outcompetes both electronic and structural disorder., Comment: 26 pages, 4 figures

The SNO+ experiment is located 2 km underground at SNOLAB in Sudbury, Canada. A low background search for neutrinoless double beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay will be conducted using 780 tonnes of liquid scintillator loaded with 3.9 tonnes of natural tellurium, corresponding to 1.3 tonnes of $^{130}$Te. This paper provides a general overview of the SNO+ experiment, including detector design, construction of process plants, commissioning efforts, electronics upgrades, data acquisition systems, and calibration techniques. The SNO+ collaboration is reusing the acrylic vessel, PMT array, and electronics of the SNO detector, having made a number of experimental upgrades and essential adaptations for use with the liquid scintillator. With low backgrounds and a low energy threshold, the SNO+ collaboration will also pursue a rich physics program beyond the search for $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay, including studies of geo- and reactor antineutrinos, supernova and solar neutrinos, and exotic physics such as the search for invisible nucleon decay. A liquid scintillator consisting of linear alkylbenzene as the solvent and 2,5-diphenyloxazole as the fluor was developed for the SNO+ experiment. This mixture was chosen as it is compatible with acrylic and has a competitive light yield to pre-existing liquid scintillators while conferring other advantages including longer attenuation lengths, superior safety characteristics, chemical simplicity, ease of handling, and logistical availability. Its properties have been extensively characterized and are presented here. We analyse the nonlinear dynamics of the large scale flow in Rayleigh-B\'enard convection in a two-dimensional, rectangular geometry of aspect ratio $\Gamma$. We impose periodic and free-slip boundary conditions in the streamwise and spanwise directions, respectively. As Rayleigh number Ra increases, a large scale zonal flow dominates the dynamics of a moderate Prandtl number fluid. At high Ra, in the turbulent regime, transitions are seen in the probability density function (PDF) of the largest scale mode. For $\Gamma = 2$, the PDF first transitions from a Gaussian to a trimodal behaviour, signifying the emergence of reversals of the zonal flow where the flow fluctuates between three distinct turbulent states: two states in which the zonal flow travels in opposite directions and one state with no zonal mean flow. Further increase in Ra leads to a transition from a trimodal to a unimodal PDF which demonstrates the disappearance of the zonal flow reversals. On the other hand, for $\Gamma = 1$ the zonal flow reversals are characterised by a bimodal PDF of the largest scale mode, where the flow fluctuates only between two distinct turbulent states with zonal flow travelling in opposite directions., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

A search has been performed for neutrinos from two sources, the $hep$ reaction in the solar $pp$ fusion chain and the $\nu_e$ component of the diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB), using the full dataset of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory with a total exposure of 2.47 kton-years after fiducialization. The $hep$ search is performed using both a single-bin counting analysis and a likelihood fit. We find a best-fit flux that is compatible with solar model predictions while remaining consistent with zero flux, and set a one-sided upper limit of $\Phi_{hep} < 30\times10^{3}~\mathrm{cm}^{-2}~\mathrm{s}^{-1}$ [90% credible interval (CI)]. No events are observed in the DSNB search region, and we set an improved upper bound on the $\nu_e$ component of the DSNB flux of $\Phi^\mathrm{DSNB}_{\nu_e} < 19~\textrm{cm}^{-2}~\textrm{s}^{-1}$ (90% CI) in the energy range $22.9 < E_\nu < 36.9$~MeV., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

In this paper, beam diagnostic and monitoring tools developed by the MAX IV Operations Group are discussed. In particular, new beam position monitoring and accelerator tunes visualization software tools, as well as tools that directly influence the beam quality and stability are introduced. An availability and downtime monitoring application is also presented.

Neutrons produced in nuclear interactions initiated by cosmic-ray muons present an irreducible background to many rare-event searches, even in detectors located deep underground. Models for the production of these neutrons have been tested against previous experimental data, but the extrapolation to deeper sites is not well understood. Here we report results from an analysis of cosmogenically produced neutrons at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory. A specific set of observables are presented, which can be used to benchmark the validity of GEANT4 physics models. In addition, the cosmogenic neutron yield, in units of $10^{-4}\;\text{cm}^{2}/\left(\text{g}\cdot\mu\right)$, is measured to be $7.28 \pm 0.09\;\text{stat.} ^{+1.59}_{-1.12}\;\text{syst.}$ in pure heavy water and $7.30 \pm 0.07\;\text{stat.} ^{+1.40}_{-1.02}\;\text{syst.}$ in NaCl-loaded heavy water. These results provide unique insights into this potential background source for experiments at SNOLAB.

Neutron production in GeV-scale neutrino interactions is a poorly studied process. We have measured the neutron multiplicities in atmospheric neutrino interactions in the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory experiment and compared them to the prediction of a Monte Carlo simulation using GENIE and a minimally modified version of GEANT4. We analyzed 837 days of exposure corresponding to Phase I, using pure heavy water, and Phase II, using a mixture of Cl in heavy water. Neutrons produced in atmospheric neutrino interactions were identified with an efficiency of $15.3\%$ and $44.3\%$, for Phase I and II respectively. The neutron production is measured as a function of the visible energy of the neutrino interaction and, for charged current quasi-elastic interaction candidates, also as a function of the neutrino energy. This study is also performed classifying the complete sample into two pairs of event categories: charged current quasi-elastic and non charged current quasi-elastic, and $\nu_{\mu}$ and $\nu_e$. Results show good overall agreement between data and Monte Carlo for both phases, with some small tension with a statistical significance below $2\sigma$ for some intermediate energies.

Point 1: Shape characterizers are metrics that quantify aspects of the overall geometry of a 3D digital surface. When computed for biological objects, the values of a shape characterizer are largely independent of homology interpretations and often contain a strong ecological and functional signal. Thus shape characterizers are useful for understanding evolutionary processes. Dirichlet Normal Energy (DNE) is a widely used shape characterizer in morphological studies. Point 2: Recent studies found that DNE is sensitive to various procedures for preparing 3D mesh from raw scan data, raising concerns regarding comparability and objectivity when utilizing DNE in morphological research. We provide a robustly implemented algorithm for computing the Dirichlet energy of the normal (ariaDNE) on 3D meshes. Point 3: We show through simulation that the effects of preparation-related mesh surface attributes such as triangle count, mesh representation, noise, smoothing and boundary triangles are much more limited on ariaDNE than DNE. Furthermore, ariaDNE retains the potential of DNE for biological studies, illustrated by its effectiveness in differentiating species by dietary preferences. Point 4: Use of ariaDNE can dramatically enhance assessment of ecological aspects of morphological variation by its stability under different 3D model acquisition methods and preparation procedure. This paper reports results from a search for nucleon decay through 'invisible' modes, where no visible energy is directly deposited during the decay itself, during the initial water phase of SNO+. However, such decays within the oxygen nucleus would produce an excited daughter that would subsequently de-excite, often emitting detectable gamma rays. A search for such gamma rays yields limits of $2.5 \times 10^{29}$ y at 90% Bayesian credibility level (with a prior uniform in rate) for the partial lifetime of the neutron, and $3.6 \times 10^{29}$ y for the partial lifetime of the proton, the latter a 70% improvement on the previous limit from SNO. We also present partial lifetime limits for invisible dinucleon modes of $1.3\times 10^{28}$ y for $nn$, $2.6\times 10^{28}$ y for $pn$ and $4.7\times 10^{28}$ y for $pp$, an improvement over existing limits by close to three orders of magnitude for the latter two., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

The long baseline between the Earth and the Sun makes solar neutrinos an excellent test beam for exploring possible neutrino decay. The signature of such decay would be an energy-dependent distortion of the traditional survival probability which can be fit for using well-developed and high precision analysis methods. Here a model including neutrino decay is fit to all three phases of $^8$B solar neutrino data taken by the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory. This fit constrains the lifetime of neutrino mass state $\nu_2$ to be ${>8.08\times10^{-5}}$ s/eV at $90\%$ confidence. An analysis combining this SNO result with those from other solar neutrino experiments results in a combined limit for the lifetime of mass state $\nu_2$ of ${>1.04\times10^{-3}}$ s/eV at $99\%$ confidence.

Experimental tests of Lorentz symmetry in systems of all types are critical for ensuring that the basic assumptions of physics are well-founded. Data from all phases of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory, a kiloton-scale heavy water Cherenkov detector, are analyzed for possible violations of Lorentz symmetry in the neutrino sector. Such violations would appear as one of eight possible signal types in the detector: six seasonal variations in the solar electron neutrino survival probability differing in energy and time dependence, and two shape changes to the oscillated solar neutrino energy spectrum. No evidence for such signals is observed, and limits on the size of such effects are established in the framework of the Standard Model Extension, including 40 limits on perviously unconstrained operators and improved limits on 15 additional operators. This makes limits on all minimal, Dirac-type Lorentz violating operators in the neutrino sector available for the first time.

In this work we realize a narrow spectroscopic feature using a technique that we refer to as magnetically-induced optical transparency. A cold ensemble of $^{88}$Sr atoms interacts with a single mode of a high-finesse optical cavity via the 7.5kHz linewidth, spin forbidden $^1$S$_0$ to $^3$P$_1$ transition. By applying a magnetic field that shifts two excited state Zeeman levels, we open a transmission window through the cavity where the collective vacuum Rabi splitting due to a single level would create destructive interference for probe transmission. The spectroscopic feature approaches the atomic transition linewidth, which is much narrower than the cavity linewidth, and is highly immune to the reference cavity length fluctuations that limit current state-of-the-art laser frequency stability., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Today's best atomic clocks are limited by frequency noise on the lasers used to interrogate the atoms. A proposed solution to this problem is to create a superradiant laser using an optical clock transition as its gain medium. This laser would act as an active atomic clock, and would be highly immune to the fluctuations in reference cavity length that limit today's best lasers. Here, we demonstrate and characterize superradiant emission from the mHz linewidth clock transition in an ensemble of laser-cooled $^{87}$Sr atoms trapped within a high-finesse optical cavity. We measure a collective enhancement of the emission rate into the cavity mode by a factor of more than 10,000 compared to independently radiating atoms. We also demonstrate a method for seeding superradiant emission and observe interference between two independent transitions lasing simultaneously. SNO+ is a large liquid scintillator-based experiment located 2km underground at SNOLAB, Sudbury, Canada. It reuses the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory detector, consisting of a 12m diameter acrylic vessel which will be filled with about 780 tonnes of ultra-pure liquid scintillator. Designed as a multipurpose neutrino experiment, the primary goal of SNO+ is a search for the neutrinoless double-beta decay (0$\nu\beta\beta$) of 130Te. In Phase I, the detector will be loaded with 0.3% natural tellurium, corresponding to nearly 800 kg of 130Te, with an expected effective Majorana neutrino mass sensitivity in the region of 55-133 meV, just above the inverted mass hierarchy. Recently, the possibility of deploying up to ten times more natural tellurium has been investigated, which would enable SNO+ to achieve sensitivity deep into the parameter space for the inverted neutrino mass hierarchy in the future. Additionally, SNO+ aims to measure reactor antineutrino oscillations, low-energy solar neutrinos, and geoneutrinos, to be sensitive to supernova neutrinos, and to search for exotic physics. A first phase with the detector filled with water will begin soon, with the scintillator phase expected to start after a few months of water data taking. The ability to synthesize high-quality samples over large areas and at low cost is one of the biggest challenges during the developmental stage of any novel material. While chemical vapor deposition (CVD) methods provide a promising low-cost route for CMOS compatible, large-scale growth of materials, it often falls short of the high-quality demands in nanoelectronics and optoelectronics. We present large-scale CVD synthesis of single- and few- layered MoS2 using direct vapor-phase sulfurization of MoO2, which enables us to obtain extremely high-quality single-crystal monolayer MoS2 samples with field-effect mobility exceeding 30 cm2/Vs in monolayers. These samples can be readily synthesized on a variety of substrates, and demonstrate a high-degree of optoelectronic uniformity in Raman and photoluminescence mapping over entire crystals with areas exceeding hundreds of square micrometers. Owing to their high crystalline quality, Raman spectroscopy on these samples reveal a range of multi-phonon processes through peaks with equal or better clarity compared to past reports on mechanically exfoliated samples. This enables us to investigate the layer thickness- and substrate-dependence of the extremely weak phonon processes at 285 cm-1 and 487 cm-1 in 2D MoS2. The ultra-high, optoelectronic-grade crystalline quality of these samples could be further established through photocurrent spectroscopy, which clearly reveal excitonic states at room temperature, a feat that has been previously demonstrated only on device fabricated with mechanically exfoliated that were artificially suspended across trenches. We use malleable deformations combined with spectral gap rigidity theory, in the framework of Popa's deformation/rigidity theory to prove unique tensor product decomposition results for II$_1$ factors arising as tensor product of wreath product factors. The sizes, temperatures and free neutron to proton ratios of the initial interaction zones produced in the collisions of 40 MeV/nucleon $^{40}$Ar + $^{112}$Sn and 55 MeV/nucleon$^{27}$Al + $^{124}$Sn are derived using total detected neutron plus charged particle multiplicity as a measure of the impact parameter range and number of participant nucleons. The size of the initial interaction zone, determined from a coalescence model analysis, increases significantly with decreasing impact parameter. The temperatures and free neutron to proton ratios in the interaction zones are relatively similar for different impact parameter ranges and evolve in a similar fashion., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures

Calorimetric and coalescence techniques have been employed to probe equilibration for hot nuclei produced in heavy ion collisions of 35 to 55 MeV/u projectiles with medium mass targets. Entrance channel mass asymmetries and energies were selected in order that very hot composite nuclei of similar mass and excitation would remain after early stage pre-equilibrium particle emission. Inter-comparison of the properties and de-excitation patterns for these different systems provides evidence for the production of hot nuclei with decay patterns relatively independent of the specific entrance channel., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

The critical behavior for the light nuclei with A$\sim 36$ has been investigated experimentally by the NIMROD multi-detectors. An extensive experimental survey of the features of the disassembly of a small quasi-projectile system with $A \sim$ 36, produced in the reactions of 47 MeV/nucleon $^{40}$Ar + $^{27}$Al, $^{48}$Ti and $^{58}$Ni, has been carried out. Nuclei in the excitation energy range of 1-9 MeV/u have been investigated employing a new method to reconstruct the quasi-projectile source. At an excitation energy $\sim$ 5.6 MeV/nucleon many observables indicate the presence of maximal fluctuations in the de-excitation processes. The fragment topological structure shows that the rank sorted fragments obey Zipf's law at the point of largest fluctuations providing another indication of a liquid gas phase transition. The caloric curve for this system shows a monotonic increase of temperature with excitation energy and no apparent plateau. The temperature at the point of maximal fluctuations is $8.3 \pm 0.5$ MeV. Taking this temperature as the critical temperature and employing the caloric curve information we have extracted the critical exponents $\beta$, $\gamma$ and $\sigma$ from the data. Their values are also consistent with the values of the universality class of the liquid gas phase transition. The kinetic energy variation of emitted light clusters has been employed as a clock to explore the time evolution of the temperature for thermalizing composite systems produced in the reactions of 26A, 35A and 47A MeV $^{64}$Zn with $^{58}$Ni, $^{92}$Mo and $^{197}$Au. For each system investigated, the double isotope ratio temperature curve exhibits a high maximum apparent temperature, in the range of 10-25 MeV, at high ejectile velocity. These maximum values increase with increasing projectile energy and decrease with increasing target mass. The time at which the maximum in the temperature curve is reached ranges from 80 to 130 fm/c after contact. For each different target, the subsequent cooling curves for all three projectile energies are quite similar. Temperatures comparable to those of limiting temperature systematics are reached 30 to 40 fm/c after the times corresponding to the maxima, at a time when AMD-V transport model calculations predict entry into the final evaporative or fragmentation stage of de-excitation of the hot composite systems. We investigate the relationship between the metric boundary and the Gromov boundary of a hyperbolic metric space. We show that the Gromov boundary is a quotient topological space of the metric boundary, and that therefore a word-hyperbolic group has an amenable action on the metric boundary of its Cayley graph. This result has significance for the study of Lip-norms on group C*-algebras., Comment: 9 pages. AMSLaTeX

We provide a geometric condition which determines whether or not every point on the metric boundary of a graph with the standard path metric is a Busemann point, that is it is the limit point of a geodesic ray. We apply this and a related condition to investigate the structure of the metric boundary of Cayley graphs. We show that every metric boundary point of the Cayley graph of a finitely generated Abelian group is a Busemann point, but groups such as the braid group and the discrete Heisenberg group have boundary points of the Cayley graph which are not Busemann points when equipped with their usual generators., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures

The reaction systems, 64Zn + 58Ni, 64Zn + 92Mo, 64Zn + 197Au, at 26A, 35A and 47A MeV, have been studied both in experiments with a 4$\pi$ detector array, NIMROD, and with Antisymmetrized Molecular Dynamics model calculations employing effective interactions corresponding to soft and stiff equations of state (EOS). Direct experimental observables, such as multiplicity distributions, charge distributions, energy spectra and velocity spectra, have been compared in detail with those of the calculations and a reasonable agreement is obtained. The velocity distributions of $\alpha$ particles and fragments with Z >= 3 show distinct differences in calculations with the soft EOS and the stiff EOS. The velocity distributions of $\alpha$ particle and Intermediate Mass Fragments (IMF's) are best described by the stiff EOS. Neither of the above direct observables nor the strength of the elliptic flow are sensitive to changes in the in-medium nucleon-nucleon (NN) cross sections. A detailed analysis of the central collision events calculated with the stiff EOS revealed that multifragmentation with cold fragment emission is a common feature predicted for all reactions studied here. A possible multifragmentation scenario is presented; after the preequilibrium emission ceases in the composite system, cold light fragments are formed in a hotter gas of nucleons and stay cold until the composite system underdoes multifragmentation. For reaction with 197Au at 47A MeV a significant radial expansion takes place. For reactions with 58Ni and 92Mo at 47A MeV semi-transparency becomes prominent. The differing reaction dynamics drastically change the kinematic characteristics of emitted fragments. This scenario gives consistent explanations for many existing experimental results in the Fermi energy domain., Comment: 34 pages, 43 figures

A wide variety of observables indicate that maximal fluctuations in the disassembly of hot nuclei with A ~ 36 occur at an excitation energy of 5.6 +- 0.5 MeV/u and temperature of 8.3 +- 0.5 MeV. Associated with this point of maximal fluctuations are a number of quantitative indicators of apparent critical behavior. The associated caloric curve does not appear to show a flattening such as that seen for heavier systems. This suggests that, in contrast to similar signals seen for liquid-gas transitions in heavier nuclei, the observed behavior in these very light nuclei is associated with a transition much closer to the critical point., Comment: v2: Major changes, new model calculations, new figures

The cross sections and velocity distributions of heavy residues from the reaction of 20 AMeV 124Sn + 27Al have been measured at forward angles using the MARS recoil separator at Texas A&M in a wide mass range. A consistent overall description of the measured cross sections and velocity distributions was achieved using a model calculation employing the concept of deep-inelastic transfer for the primary stage of peripheral collisions, pre-equilibrium emission and incomplete fusion for the primary stage of more violent central collisions and the statistical model of multifragmentation (SMM code) for the deexcitation stage. An alternative calculation employing the sequential binary decay (GEMINI code) could not reproduce the observed yields of the residues from violent collisions (A<90) due to different kinematic properties. The success of SMM demonstrates that the heavy residues originate from events where a competition of thermally equilibrated fragment partitions takes place rather than a sequence of binary decays., Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures, LaTeX, to appear in NPA

The cross sections and velocity distributions of projectile-like fragments from the reaction of 25 MeV/nucleon 86Kr + 64Ni have been measured using the MARS recoil separator at Texas A&M, with special emphasis on the neutron rich isotopes. Proton-removal and neutron pick-up isotopes have been observed with large cross sections. A model of deep-inelastic transfer (DIT) for the primary interaction stage and the statistical evaporation code GEMINI for the deexcitation stage have been used to describe the properties of the product distributions. The results have also been compared with the EPAX parametrization of high-energy fragmentation yields. The experimental data show an enhancement in the production of neutron-rich isotopes close to the projectile, relative to the predictions of DIT/GEMINI and the expectations of EPAX. We attribute this enhancement mainly to the effect of the extended neutron distribution (neutron ``skin'') of the 64Ni target in peripheral interactions of 86Kr with 64Ni. The large cross sections of such reactions near the Fermi energy, involving peripheral nucleon exchange, suggest that, not only the N/Z of the projectile and the target, but also the N/Z distribution at the nuclear surface may properly be exploited in the production of neutron-rich rare isotopes. This synthesis approach may offer a fruitful pathway to extremely neutron-rich nuclei, towards the neutron-drip line., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. Lett B

The relationship between nuclear temperature and excitation energy of hot nuclei formed by 8 GeV/c negative pion and antiproton beams incident on 197Au has been investigated with the ISiS 4-pidetector array at the BNL AGS accelerator. The double-isotope-ratio technique was used to calculate the temperature of the hot system. The two thermometers used (p/d-3He/4He) and (d/t-3He/4He) are in agreement below E*/A ~ 7 MeV when corrected for secondary decay. Comparison of these caloric curves to those from other experiments shows some differences that may be attributable to instrumentation and analysis procedures. For many years it has been speculated that excited nuclei would undergo a liquid to vapor phase transition. For even longer, it has been known that clusterization in a vapor carries direct information on the liquid- vapor equilibrium according to Fisher's droplet model. Now the thermal component of the 8 GeV/c pion + 197Au multifragmentation data of the ISiS Collaboration is shown to follow the scaling predicted by Fisher's model, thus providing the strongest evidence yet of the liquid to vapor phase transition., Comment: four pages, four figures, first two in color (corrected typo in Ref. Experimental data from the reaction of an 8.0 GeV/c pi- beam incident on a 197Au target have been analyzed in order to investigate the integrated breakup time scale for hot residues. Alpha-particle energy spectra and particle angular distributions supported by a momentum tensor analysis suggest that at large excitation energy, above 3-5 MeV/nucleon, light-charged particles are emitted prior to or at the same time as the emission of the heavy fragments. Comparison with the SMM and GEMINI models is presented. A binary fission-like mechanism fits the experimental data at low excitation energies, but seems unable to reproduce the data at excitation energies above 3-5 MeV/nucleon., Comment: 12 pages including 3 postscript figures

Excitation-energy-gated two-fragment correlation functions have been studied between 2 to 9A MeV of excitation energy for equilibrium-like sources formed in $\pi^-$ and p + $^{197}$Au reactions at beam momenta of 8,9.2 and 10.2 GeV/c. Comparison of the data to an N-body Coulomb-trajectory code shows a decrease of one order of magnitude in the fragment emission time in the excitation energy interval 2-5A MeV, followed by a nearly constant breakup time at higher excitation energy. The observed decrease in emission time is shown to be strongly correlated with the increase of the fragment emission probability, and the onset of thermally-induced radial expansion. This result is interpreted as evidence consistent with a transition from surface-dominated to bulk emission expected for spinodal decomposition., Comment: 11 pages including 3 postscript figures (1 color)

We have created quasiprojectiles of varying isospin via peripheral reactions of 28Si + 112Sn and 124Sn at 30 and 50 MeV/nucleon. The quasiprojectiles have been reconstructed from completely isotopically identified fragments. The difference in N/Z of the reconstructed quasiprojectiles allows the investigation of the disassembly as a function of the isospin of the fragmenting system. The isobaric yield ratio 3H/3He depends strongly on N/Z ratio of quasiprojectiles. The dependences of mean fragment multiplicity and mean N/Z ratio of the fragments on N/Z ratio of the quasiprojectile are different for light charged particles and intermediate mass fragments. Observation of a different N/Z ratio of light charged particles and intermediate mass fragments is consistent with an inhomogeneous distribution of isospin in the fragmenting system., Comment: 5 pages, 4 Postscript figures, RevTeX

A dependence of the isobaric ratio Y(3H)/Y(3He) on the N/Z ratio of the reconstructed quasiprojectile for the reaction of 28Si beam with 112,124Sn targets at two different projectile energies 30 and 50 MeV/nucleon is presented. We demonstrate a linear dependence of ln(Y(3H)/Y(3He)) on the quasiprojectile N/Z ratio and show the dependence of the slope on reconstructed excitation energy of the quasiprojectile. We relate this slope dependence at a given excitation energy to the temperature of the fragmenting system. Using the model assumptions of the statistical multifragmentation model, a method of temperature determination is proposed. Multifragmentation of quasiprojectiles was studied in reactions of 28Si beam with 112Sn and 124Sn targets at projectile energies 30 and 50 MeV/nucleon. The quasiprojectile observables were reconstructed using isotopically identified charged particles with Z_f <= 5 detected at forward angles. The nucleon exchange between projectile and target was investigated using isospin and excitation energy of reconstructed quasiprojectile. For events with total reconstructed charge equal to the charge of the beam (Z_tot = 14) the influence of beam energy and target isospin on neutron transfer was studied in detail. Simulations employing subsequently model of deep inelastic transfer, statistical model of multifragmentation and software replica of FAUST detector array were carried out. A concept of deep inelastic transfer provides good description of production of highly excited quasiprojectiles. The isospin and excitation energy of quasiprojectile were described with good overall agreement. The fragment multiplicity, charge and isospin were reproduced satisfactorily. Fragment kinetic energy spectra for reactions induced by 8.0 GeV/c $\rm{\pi^-}$ beams incident on a $\rm{^{197}}$Au target have been analyzed in order to deduce the possible existence and influence of thermal expansion. The average fragment kinetic energies are observed to increase systematically with fragment charge but are nearly independent of excitation energy. Comparison of the data with statistical multifragmentation models indicates the onset of extra collective thermal expansion near an excitation energy of E*/A $\rm{\approx}$ 5 MeV. However, this effect is weak relative to the radial expansion observed in heavy-ion-induced reactions, consistent with the interpretation that the latter expansion may be driven primarily by dynamical effects such as compression/decompression., Comment: 12 pages including 4 postscript figures

Excitation-energy distributions have been derived from measurements of 5.0-14.6 GeV/c antiproton, proton and pion reactions with $^{197}$Au target nuclei, using the ISiS 4$\pi$ detector array. The maximum probability for producing high excitation-energy events is found for the antiproton beam relative to other hadrons, $^3$He and $\bar{p}$ beams from LEAR. For protons and pions, the excitation-energy distributions are nearly independent of hadron type and beam momentum above about 8 GeV/c. The excitation energy enhancement for $\bar{p}$ beams and the saturation effect are qualitatively consistent with intranuclear cascade code predictions. For all systems studied, maximum cluster sizes are observed for residues with E*/A $\sim$ 6 MeV., Comment: 14 pages including 5 figures and 1 table.
