Delineating farmland boundaries is essential for agricultural management such as crop monitoring and agricultural census. Traditional methods using remote sensing imagery have been efficient but limited in generalisation. The Segment Anything Model (SAM), known for its impressive zero shot performance, has been adapted for remote sensing tasks through prompt learning and fine tuning. Here, we propose a SAM based farmland boundary delineation framework 'fabSAM' that combines a Deeplabv3+ based Prompter and SAM. Also, a fine tuning strategy was introduced to enable SAMs decoder to improve the use of prompt information. Experimental results on the AI4Boundaries and AI4SmallFarms datasets have shown that fabSAM has a significant improvement in farmland region identification and boundary delineation. Compared to zero shot SAM, fabSAM surpassed it by 23.5% and 15.1% in mIOU on the AI4Boundaries and AI4SmallFarms datasets, respectively. For Deeplabv3+, fabSAM outperformed it by 4.9% and 12.5% in mIOU, respectively. These results highlight the effectiveness of fabSAM, which also means that we can more easily obtain the global farmland region and boundary maps from open source satellite image datasets like Sentinel2.

Cocoa is a multi-billion-dollar industry but research on improving yields through pollination remains limited. New embedded hardware and AI-based data analysis is advancing information on cocoa flower visitors, their identity and implications for yields. We present the first cocoa flower visitor dataset containing 5,792 images of Ceratopogonidae, Formicidae, Aphididae, Araneae, and Encyrtidae, and 1,082 background cocoa flower images. This dataset was curated from 23 million images collected over two years by embedded cameras in cocoa plantations in Hainan province, China. We exemplify the use of the dataset with different sizes of YOLOv8 models and by progressively increasing the background image ratio in the training set to identify the best-performing model. The medium-sized YOLOv8 model achieved the best results with 8% background images (F1 Score of 0.71, mAP50 of 0.70). Overall, this dataset is useful to compare the performance of deep learning model architectures on images with low contrast images and difficult detection targets. China is the leading crop producer and has successfully implemented sustainable development programs related to agriculture. Sustainable agriculture has been promoted to achieve national food security targets such as food self-sufficiency through the well-facilitated farmland construction (WFFC) approach. The WFFC is introduced in Chinas current national 10-year plan to consolidate farmlands into large and simplified production areas to maximise automation, and improve soil fertility and productivity. However, research suggests that diversified and smaller farms faciliate ecosystem services, can improve yield resilience, defuse human health threats, and increase farm profitability. Currently, WFFC has not considered ecological farmland improvements and it may miss long-term environmental benefits including ecosystem service preservation conducive to yields. Moreover, the nutritional status in China has changed in recent decades with undernutrition being dramatically reduced, but the prevalence of overweight, obesity, and chronic diseases being increased. While a strategic choice and management of crop and livestock species can improve nutrition, the environmental and production benefits of agricultural diversification are currently not well interlinked with Chinas food and nutrition security discussions. Lastly, the role of agricultural technology for socioeconomic benefits and the link with diversified agricultural production may provide vast benefits for food security. Here, we focus on the opportunities and co-benefits of agricultural diversification and technology innovations to advance food and nutrition security in China through ecosystem service and yield benefits. Our applied five-point research agenda can provide evidence-based opportunities to support China in reaching its ambitious food security targets through agricultural diversification with global ramifications.

Recent advances in Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies help ecosystem monitoring to shift towards automated monitoring with low power sensors and embedded vision on powerful processing units. Vision-based monitoring devices need an effective power management and control system (PMCS) with system-adapted power input and output capabilities to achieve power-efficient and self-sustainable operation. Here, we present a universal power management solution for automated ecosystem monitoring devices, compatible with commonly used off-the-shelf edge processing units (EPUs). The proposed design is specifically adapted for battery-powered EPU systems by incorporating power-matched energy harvesting (EH), a power switch with low-power sleep mode, and simple system integration in an MCU-less architecture with automated operation. We use a 4-month environmental case study to monitor plant growth under 4mg microplastic (MP) exposure, demonstrating that the setup achieved continuous and sustainable operation. In this plant phenology case study, our power management module is deployed in an embedded vision camera equipped with a 5W solar panel and five various environmental sensors. This work shows the usability of the power management board in environmentally relevant use cases and for tasks in agricultural applications.

Sustainable agriculture in the 21st century requires the production of sufficient food while reducing the environmental impact and safeguarding human livelihoods. Many studies have confirmed agricultural diversification practices such as intercropping, organic farming and soil inoculations as a suitable pathway to achieve these goals, but long-term viability of socioeconomic and ecological benefits is uncertain. Here, we quantified the long-term effects of agricultural diversification practices on socioeconomic and ecological benefits based on 50 years of data from 184 meta-analyses and 4,260 effect sizes. We showed that, with neutral crop yield over time, financial profitability, most variables related to biological communities, all aspects of soil quality, and carbon sequestration benefits increased by up to 2823% over 20 years of practice. Non-crop diversification practices and the use of organic amendments increased benefits by up to 2000% after 50 years. A trade-off analysis between yield and other services showed win-win outcomes during the first 25 years. Our synthesis provides the urgently needed evidence for farmers and other decision-makers that diversification increases long-term profitability, biodiversity, and climate mitigation benefits, and therefore, allows upscaling diversification for climate change mitigation and global food system transformation.

Urban land growth presents a major sustainability challenge, yet its growth patterns and dynamics remain unclear. We quantified urban land evolution by analyzing its statistical distribution in 14 regions and countries over 29 years. The results show a converging temporal trend in urban land expansion from sub-country to global scales, characterized by a coherent shift of urban area distributions from initial power law to exponential distributions, with the consequences of reduced system stability and resilience, and increased exposure of urban populations to extreme heat and air pollution. These changes are attributed to the increased influence from external economies of scale associated with globalization and are predicted to intensify in the future. The findings will advance urban science and direct current land urbanization practices toward sustainable development, especially in developing regions and medium-size cities.

Production of cocoa, the third largest trade commodity globally has experienced climate related yield stagnation since 2016, forcing farmers to expand production in forested habitats and to shift from nature friendly agroforestry systems to intensive monocultures. The goal for future large-scale cocoa production combines high yields with biodiversity friendly management into a climate adapted smart agroforestry system (SAS). As pollination limitation is a key driver of global production, we use data of more than 150,000 cocoa farms and results of hand pollination experiments to show that manually enhancing cocoa pollination (hereafter manual pollination) can produce SAS. Manual pollination can triple farm yields and double farmers annual profit in the major producer countries Ivory Coast, Ghana, and Indonesia, and can increase global cocoa supplies by up to 13%. We propose a win win scenario to mitigate negative long term price and socioeconomic effects, whereby manual pollination compensates only for yield losses resulting from climate and disease related decreases in production area and conversion of monocultures into agroforestry systems. Our results highlight that yields in biodiversity friendly and climate adapted SAS can be similar to yields currently only achieved in monocultures. Adoption of manual pollination could be achieved through wider implementation of ecocertification standards, carbon markets, and zero deforestation pledges.

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) for image recognition tasks are seeing rapid advances in the available architectures and how networks are trained based on large computational infrastructure and standard datasets with millions of images. In contrast, performance and time constraints for example, of small devices and free cloud GPUs necessitate efficient network training (i.e., highest accuracy in the shortest inference time possible), often on small datasets. Here, we hypothesize that initially decreasing image size during training makes the training process more efficient, because pre-shaping weights with small images and later utilizing these weights with larger images reduces initial network parameters and total inference time. We test this Efficient Network TRaining (ENTR) Hypothesis by training pre-trained Residual Network (ResNet) models (ResNet18, 34, & 50) on three small datasets (steel microstructures, bee images, and geographic aerial images) with a free cloud GPU. Based on three training regimes of i) not, ii) gradually or iii) in one step increasing image size over the training process, we show that initially reducing image size increases training efficiency consistently across datasets and networks. We interpret these results mechanistically in the framework of regularization theory. Support for the ENTR hypothesis is an important contribution, because network efficiency improvements for image recognition tasks are needed for practical applications.
