We propose a novel approach to tackle integrability problem for evolutionary differential-difference equations (D$\Delta$Es) on free associative algebras, also referred to as nonabelian D$\Delta$Es. This approach enables us to derive necessary integrability conditions, determine the integrability of a given equation, and make progress in the classification of integrable nonabelian D$\Delta$Es. This work involves establishing symbolic representations for the nonabelian difference algebra, difference operators, and formal series, as well as introducing a novel quasi-local extension for the algebra of formal series within the context of symbolic representations. Applying this formalism, we solve the classification problem of integrable skew-symmetric quasi-linear nonabelian equations of orders $(-1,1)$, $(-2,2)$, and $(-3,3)$, consequently revealing some new equations in the process.

This paper builds upon our recent work, published in Lett. Math. Phys., 112: 94, 2022, where we established that the integrable Volterra lattice on a free associative algebra and the whole hierarchy of its symmetries admits a quantisation dependent on a parameter $\omega$. We also uncovered an intriguing aspect: all odd-degree symmetries of the hierarchy admits an alternative, non-deformation quantisation, resulting in a non-commutative algebra for any choice of the quantisation parameter $\omega$. In this study, we demonstrate that each equation within the quantum Volterra hierarchy can be expressed in the Heisenberg form. We provide explicit expressions for all quantum Hamiltonians and establish their commutativity. In the classical limit, these quantum Hamiltonians yield explicit expressions for the classical ones of the commutative Volterra hierarchy. Furthermore, we present Heisenberg equations and their Hamiltonians in the case of non-deformation quantisation. Finally, we discuss commuting first integrals, central elements of the quantum algebra, and the integrability problem for periodic reductions of the Volterra lattice in the context of both quantisations.

In this paper we study the algebraic properties of a new integrable differential-difference equation. This equation can be seen as a deformation of the modified Narita-Itoh-Bogoyavlensky equation and has the Kaup-Kupershmidt equation in its continuous limit. Using its Lax representation we explicitly construct a recursion operator for this equation and prove that it is a Nijenhuis operator. In this paper we explore a recently emerged approach to the problem of quantisation based on the notion of quantisation ideals. We explicitly prove that the nonabelian Volterra together with the whole hierarchy of its symmetries admit a deformation quantisation. We show that all odd-degree symmetries of the Volterra hierarchy admit also a non-deformation quantisation. We discuss the quantisation problem for periodic Volterra hierarchy including their quantum Hamiltonians, central elements of the quantised algebras, and demonstrate super-integrability of the quantum systems obtained. In this paper we extensively study the notion of Hamiltonian structure for nonabelian differential-difference systems, exploring the link between the different algebraic (in terms of double Poisson algebras and vertex algebras) and geometric (in terms of nonabelian Poisson bivectors) definitions. We introduce multiplicative double Poisson vertex algebras (PVAs) as the suitable noncommutative counterpart to multiplicative PVAs, used to describe Hamiltonian differential-difference equations in the commutative setting, and prove that these algebras are in one-to-one correspondence with the Poisson structures defined by difference operators, providing a sufficient condition for the fulfilment of the Jacobi identity. Moreover, we define nonabelian polyvector fields and their Schouten brackets, for both finitely generated noncommutative algebras and infinitely generated difference ones: this allows us to provide a unified characterisation of Poisson bivectors and double quasi-Poisson algebra structures. Finally, as an application we obtain some results towards the classification of local scalar Hamiltonian difference structures and construct the Hamiltonian structures for the nonabelian Kaup, Ablowitz-Ladik and Chen-Lee-Liu integrable lattices., Comment: 66 pages - final version

In this paper, we carry out the algebraic study of integrable differential-difference equations whose field variables take values in an associative (but not commutative) algebra. We adapt the Hamiltonian formalism to nonabelian difference Laurent polynomials and describe how to obtain a recursion operator from the Lax representation of an integrable nonabelian differential-difference system. As an application, we propose a novel family of integrable equations: the nonabelian Narita-Itoh-Bogoyavlensky lattice, for which we construct their recursion operators and Hamiltonian operators and prove the locality of infinitely many commuting symmetries generated from their highly nonlocal recursion operators. Finally, we discuss the nonabelian version of several integrable difference systems, including the relativistic Toda chain and Ablowitz-Ladik lattice., Comment: 32 pages. In this paper we extend to the difference case the notion of Poisson-Lichnerowicz cohomology, an object encapsulating the building blocks for the theory of deformations of Hamiltonian operators. A local scalar difference Hamiltonian operator is a polynomial in the shift operator and its inverse, with coefficients in the algebra of difference functions, endowing the space of local functionals with the structure of a Lie algebra. Its Poisson-Lichnerowicz cohomology carries the information about the center, the symmetries and the admissible deformations of such algebra. The analogue notion for the differential case has been widely investigated: the first and most important result is the triviality of all but the lowest cohomology for first order Hamiltonian differential operators, due to Getzler arXiv:math/0002164 . We study the Poisson-Lichnerowicz cohomology for the operator $K_0 = \mathcal{S} - \mathcal{S}^{-1}$, which is the normal form for $(-1,1)$ order scalar difference Hamiltonian operators; we obtain the same result as Getzler did, namely $H^p(K_0)=0$ $\forall p > 1$, and explicitly compute $H^0(K_0)$ and $H^1(K_0)$. We then apply our main result to the classification of lower order scalar Hamiltonian operators recently obtained by De Sole, Kac, Valeri and Wakimoto arXiv:1806.05536, Comment: 32 pages

In this paper we are developing a theory of rational (pseudo) difference Hamiltonian operators, focusing in particular on its algebraic aspects. We show that a pseudo--difference Hamiltonian operator can be represented as a ratio $AB^{-1}$ of two difference operators with coefficients from a difference field $\mathcal{F}$ where $A$ is preHamiltonian. A difference operator $A$ is called preHamiltonian if its image is a Lie subalgebra with respect to the Lie bracket of evolutionary vector fields on $\mathcal{F}$. We show that a skew-symmetric difference operator is Hamiltonian if and only if it is preHamiltonian and satisfies simply verifiable conditions on its coefficients. We show that if $H$ is a rational Hamiltonian operator, then to find a second Hamiltonian operator $K$ compatible with $H$ is the same as to find a preHamiltonian pair $A$ and $B$ such that $AB^{-1}H$ is skew-symmetric. We apply our theory to non-trivial multi-Hamiltonian structures of Narita-Itoh-Bogoyavlensky and Adler-Postnikov equations.

In this paper we introduce preHamiltonian pairs of difference operators and study their connections with Nijenhuis operators and the existence of weakly non-local inverse recursion operators for differential-difference equations. We begin with a rigorous setup of the problem in terms of the skew field $Q$ of rational (pseudo--difference) operators over a difference field $F$ with a zero characteristic subfield of constants $k\subset F$ and the principal ideal ring $M_n(Q)$ of matrix rational (pseudo-difference) operators. In particular, we give a criteria for a rational operator to be weakly non--local. A difference operator $H$ is called preHamiltonian, if its image is a Lie $k$-subalgebra with respect the the Lie bracket on $F$. Two preHamiltonian operators form a preHamiltonian pair if any $k$-linear combination of them is preHamiltonian. Then we show that a preHamiltonian pair naturally leads to a Nijenhuis operator, and a Nijenhuis operator can be represented in terms of a preHamiltonian pair. This provides a systematical method to check whether a rational operator is Nijenhuis. As an application, we construct a preHamiltonian pair and thus a Nijenhuis recursion operator for the differential-difference equation recently discovered by Adler \& Postnikov. The Nijenhuis operator obtained is not weakly non-local. We prove that it generates an infinite hierarchy of local commuting symmetries. We also illustrate our theory on the well known examples including the Toda, the Ablowitz-Ladik and the Kaup-Newell differential-difference equations., Comment: 44 pages

We consider a Lax pair found by Xia, Qiao and Zhou for a family of two-component analogues of the Camassa-Holm equation, including an arbitrary function $H$, and show that this apparent freedom can be removed via a combination of a reciprocal transformation and a gauge transformation, which reduces the system to triangular form. The resulting triangular system may or may not be integrable, depending on the choice of $H$. In addition, we apply the formal series approach of Dubrovin and Zhang to show that scalar equations of Camassa-Holm type with homogeneous nonlinear terms of degree greater than three are not integrable.

We classify integrable scalar polynomial partial differential equations of second order generalizing the short pulse equation.

We extend the symbolic representation to the ring of N=1 supersymmetric differential polynomials, and demonstrate that operations on the ring, such as the super derivative, Frechet derivative and super commutator, can be carried out in the symbolic way. Using the symbolic representation, we classify scalar $\lambda$-homogeneous N=1 supersymmetric evolutionary equations with nonzero linear term when $\lambda>0$ for arbitrary order and give a comprehensive description of all such integrable equations., Comment: 24 pages

In the paper we develop the dressing method for the solution of the two-dimensional periodic Volterra system with a period N. We derive soliton solutions of arbitrary rank $k$ and give a full classification of rank 1 solutions. We have found a new class of exact solutions corresponding to wave fronts which represent smooth interfaces between two nonlinear periodic waves or a periodic wave and a trivial (zero) solution. The wave fronts are non-stationary and they propagate with a constant average velocity. The system also has soliton solutions similar to breathers, which resembles soliton webs in the KP theory. We associate the classification of soliton solutions with the Schubert decomposition of the Grassmanians ${\rm Gr}_{\mathbb{R}}(k,N)$ and ${\rm Gr}_{\mathbb{C}}(k,N)$.

A classification of integrable two-component systems of non-evolutionary partial differential equations that are analogous to the Camassa-Holm equation is carried out via the perturbative symmetry approach. Independently, a classification of compatible pairs of Hamiltonian operators is carried out, which leads to bi-Hamiltonian structures for the same systems of equations. Some exact solutions and Lax pairs are also constructed for the systems considered.

We propose a method for construction of Darboux transformations, which is a new development of the dressing method for Lax operators invariant under a reduction group. We apply the method to the vector sine-Gordon equation and derive its B\"acklund transformations. We show that there is a new Lax operator canonically associated with our Darboux transformation resulting an evolutionary differential-difference system on a sphere. The latter is a generalised symmetry for the chain of B\"acklund transformations. Using the re-factorisation approach and the Bianchi permutability of the Darboux transformations we derive new vector Yang-Baxter map and integrable discrete vector sine-Gordon equation on a sphere.

In this paper, we develop the dressing method to study the exact solutions for the vector sine-Gordon equation. The explicit formulas for one kink and one breather are derived. The method can be used to construct multi-soliton solutions. Two soliton interactions are also studied. The formulas for position shift of the kink and position and phase shifts of the breather are given. In this paper, we first give a short account on the indecomposable sl(2,C) modules in the Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand (BGG) category O. We show these modules naturally arise for homogeneous integrable nonlinear evolutionary systems. We then develop an approach to construct master symmetries for such integrable systems. This method naturally enables us to compute the hierarchy of time-dependent symmetries. We finally illustrate the method using both classical and new examples. We compare our approach to the known existing methods used to construct master symmetries. For the new integrable equations such as a Benjamin-Ono type equation, a new integrable Davey-Stewartson type equation and two different versions of (2+1)-dimensional generalised Volterra Chains, we generate their conserved densities using their master symmetries.

We construct the Darboux transformation with Dihedral reduction group for the 2-dimensional generalisation of the periodic Volterra lattice. The resulting Backlund transformation can be viewed as a nonevolutionary integrable differential difference equation. We also find its generalised symmetry and the Lax representation for this symmetry. Using formal diagonalisation of the Darboux matrix we obtain local conservation laws of the system.

In this paper we review two concepts directly related to the Lax representations: Darboux transformations and Recursion operators for integrable systems. We then present an extensive list of integrable differential-difference equations together with their Hamiltonian structures, recursion operators, nontrivial generalised symmetries and Darboux-Lax representations. The new results include multi-Hamiltonian structures and recursion operators for integrable Volterra type equations, integrable discretization of derivative nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations such as the Kaup-Newell lattice, the Chen-Lee-Liu lattice and the Ablowitz-Ramani-Segur (Gerdjikov-Ivanov) lattice. We also compute the weakly nonlocal inverse recursion operators.

Group based moving frames have a wide range of applications, from the classical equivalence problems in differential geometry to more modern applications such as computer vision. Here we describe what we call a discrete group based moving frame, which is essentially a sequence of moving frames with overlapping domains. We demonstrate a small set of generators of the algebra of invariants, which we call the discrete Maurer--Cartan invariants, for which there are recursion formulae. We show that this offers significant computational advantages over a single moving frame for our study of discrete integrable systems. We demonstrate that the discrete analogues of some curvature flows lead naturally to Hamiltonian pairs, which generate integrable differential-difference systems. In particular, we show that in the centro-affine plane and the projective space, the Hamiltonian pairs obtained can be transformed into the known Hamiltonian pairs for the Toda and modified Volterra lattices respectively under Miura transformations. We also show that a specified invariant map of polygons in the centro-affine plane can be transformed to the integrable discretization of the Toda Lattice. Moreover, we describe in detail the case of discrete flows in the homogeneous 2-sphere and we obtain realizations of equations of Volterra type as evolutions of polygons on the sphere.

In this paper we describe a well-chosen discrete moving frame and their associated invariants along projective polygons in $\RP^n$, and we use them to write explicit general expressions for invariant evolutions of projective $N$-gons. We then use a reduction process inspired by a discrete Drinfeld-Sokolov reduction to obtain a natural Hamiltonian structure on the space of projective invariants, and we establish a close relationship between the projective $N$-gon evolutions and the Hamiltonian evolutions on the invariants of the flow. We prove that {any} Hamiltonian evolution is induced on invariants by an evolution of $N$-gons - what we call a projective realization - and we give the direct connection. Finally, in the planar case we provide completely integrable evolutions (the Boussinesq lattice related to the lattice $W_3$-algebra), their projective realizations and their Hamiltonian pencil. We generalize both structures to $n$-dimensions and we prove that they are Poisson. We define explicitly the $n$-dimensional generalization of the planar evolution (the discretization of the $W_n$-algebra) and prove that it is completely integrable, providing also its projective realization.

We construct a recursion operator for the family of Narita-Itoh-Bogoyavlensky infinite lattice equations using its Lax presentation and present their mastersymmetries and bi-Hamiltonian structures. We show that this highly nonlocal recursion operator generates infinite many local symmetries.

We present a new recursion and Hamiltonian operators for the Viallet equation. This new recursion operator and the recursion operator found in [Theoretical and Mathematical Physics, 167:421--443 (2011), arXiv:1004.5346] satisfy the elliptic curve equation associated with the Viallet equation.

In this paper we discuss the concept of cosymmetries and co--recursion operators for difference equations and present a co--recursion operator for the Viallet equation. We also discover a new type of factorisation for the recursion operators of difference equations. This factorisation enables us to give an elegant proof that the recursion operator given in arXiv:1004.5346 is indeed a recursion operator for the Viallet equation. Moreover, we show that this operator is Nijenhuis and thus generates infinitely many commuting local symmetries. This recursion operator and its factorisation into Hamiltonian and symplectic operators can be applied to Yamilov's discretisation of the Krichever-Novikov equation.

In this paper, we present extraordinary algebraic and geometrical structures for the Hunter-Saxton equation: infinitely many commuting and non-commuting $x,t$-independent higher order symmetries and conserved densities. Using a recursive relation, we explicitly generate infinitely many higher order conserved densities dependent on arbitrary parameters. We find three Nijenhuis recursion operators resulting from Hamiltonian pairs, of which two are new. They generate three hierarchies of commuting local symmetries. Finally, we give a local recursion operator depending on an arbitrary parameter. As a by-product, we classify all anti-symmetric operators of a definite form that are compatible with the Hamiltonian operator $D_x^{-1}$.

In this paper we make an attempt to give a consistent background and definitions suitable for the theory of integrable difference equations. We adapt a concept of recursion operator to difference equations and show that it generates an infinite sequence of symmetries and canonical conservation laws for a difference equation. Similar to the case of partial differential equations these canonical densities can serve as integrability conditions for difference equations. We have found the recursion operators for the Viallet and all ABS equations.

We prove that for compatible weakly nonlocal Hamiltonian and symplectic operators, hierarchies of infinitely many commuting local symmetries and conservation laws can be generated under some easily verified conditions no matter whether the generating Nijenhuis operators are weakly nonlocal or not. We construct a recursion operator of the two dimensional periodic Volterra chain from its Lax representation and prove that it is a Nijenhuis operator. Furthermore we show this system is a (generalised) bi-Hamiltonian system. Rather surprisingly, the product of its weakly nonlocal Hamiltonian and symplectic operators gives rise to the square of the recursion operator., Comment: Submit to Journal of Mathematical Physics

We present a new integrable partial differential equation found by Vladimir Novikov. Like the Camassa-Holm and Degasperis-Procesi equations, this new equation admits peaked soliton (peakon) solutions, but it has nonlinear terms that are cubic, rather than quadratic. We give a matrix Lax pair for V. Novikov's equation, and show how it is related by a reciprocal transformation to a negative flow in the Sawada-Kotera hierarchy. Infinitely many conserved quantities are found, as well as a bi-Hamiltonian structure. The latter is used to obtain the Hamiltonian form of the finite-dimensional system for the interaction of $N$ peakons, and the two-body dynamics (N=2) is explicitly integrated. This is a review paper of recent results in the perturbative symmetry approach in the symbolic representation.

We study a class of evolutionary partial differential systems with two components related to second order (in time) non-evolutionary equations of odd order in spatial variable. We develop the formal diagonalisation method in symbolic representation, which enables us to derive an explicit set of necessary conditions of existence of higher symmetries. Using these conditions we globally classify all such homogeneous integrable systems, i.e. systems which possess a hierarchy of infinitely many higher symmetries., Comment: Submitted to Studies in Applied Mathematics

We develop the symbolic representation method to derive the hierarchies of $(2+1)$-dimensional integrable equations from the scalar Lax operators and to study their properties globally. The method applies to both commutative and noncommutative cases in the sense that the dependent variable takes its values in ${\mathbb C}$ or a noncommutative associative algebra. We prove that these hierarchies are indeed quasi-local in the commutative case as conjectured by Mikhailov and Yamilov in 1998. We propose a ring extension based on the symbolic representation. As examples, we give noncommutative versions of KP, mKP and Boussinesq equations., Comment: 17 pages

We study partial differential equations of second order (in time) that possess a hierarchy of infinitely many higher symmetries. The famous Boussinesq equation is a member of this class after the extension of the differential polynomial ring. We develop the perturbative symmetry approach in symbolic representation. Applying it, we classify the integrable equations of 4th and 6th order (in the space derivative) equations, as well as we have found three new 10th order integrable equations. To prove the integrability we provide the corresponding bi-Hamiltonian structures and recursion operators., Comment: 22 pages

In this paper we present a family of second order in time nonlinear partial differential equations, which have only one higher symmetry. These equations are not integrable, but have a solution depending on one arbitrary function.

Algorithms for the symbolic computation of conserved densities, fluxes, generalized symmetries, and recursion operators for systems of nonlinear differential-difference equations are presented. In the algorithms we use discrete versions of the Frechet and variational derivatives, as well as discrete Euler and homotopy operators. The algorithms are illustrated for prototypical nonlinear lattices, including the Kac-van Moerbeke (Volterra) and Toda lattices. In this paper we show that if one writes down the structure equations for the evolution of a curve embedded in an (n)-dimensional Riemannian manifold with constant curvature this leads to a symplectic, a Hamiltonian and an hereditary operator. This gives us a natural connection between finite dimensional geometry, infinite dimensional geometry and integrable systems. Moreover one finds a Lax pair in (\orth{n+1}) with the vector modified Korteweg-De Vries equation (vmKDV) \[ \vk{t}= \vk{xxx}+\fr32 ||\vk{}||^2 \vk{x} \] as integrability condition. We indicate that other integrable vector evolution equations can be found by using a different Ansatz on the form of the Lax pair. We obtain these results by using the {\em natural} or {\em parallel} frame and we show how this can be gauged by a generalized Hasimoto transformation to the (usual) {\em Fren{\^e}t} frame. If one chooses the curvature to be zero, as is usual in the context of integrable systems, then one loses information unless one works in the natural frame.
