Oracle Bone Inscriptions is one of the oldest existing forms of writing in the world. However, due to the great antiquity of the era, a large number of Oracle Bone Inscriptions (OBI) remain undeciphered, making it one of the global challenges in the field of paleography today. This paper introduces a novel approach, namely Puzzle Pieces Picker (P$^3$), to decipher these enigmatic characters through radical reconstruction. We deconstruct OBI into foundational strokes and radicals, then employ a Transformer model to reconstruct them into their modern (conterpart)\textcolor{blue}{counterparts}, offering a groundbreaking solution to ancient script analysis. To further this endeavor, a new Ancient Chinese Character Puzzles (ACCP) dataset was developed, comprising an extensive collection of character images from seven key historical stages, annotated with detailed radical sequences. The experiments have showcased considerable promising insights, underscoring the potential and effectiveness of our approach in deciphering the intricacies of ancient Chinese scripts. Direct laser acceleration of electrons in near-critical-density (NCD) carbon nanotube foams (CNFs) has its advantages in the high-efficiency generation of relativistic electrons and broadband X-rays. Here, we report the first simultaneous measurement on the spectra of laser-driven electrons and X-rays from CNFs at moderately relativistic intensities of around 5\times{10}^{19}\ W/cm^2.\ The density and thickness of the CNFs were scanned in the experiments, indicating the optimized electrons temperature of 5.5 MeV and X-ray critical energy of 5 keV. Two-dimensional (2D) particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations confirm that the electrons, with a temperature significantly higher than the pondermotive scale, are directly accelerated by the laser along the NCD plasma channel, while the bright X-rays are emitted by these electrons through betatron radiation or Thomson backscattering inside the channel. Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) is a versatile class of quantum materials of interest to various fields including, e.g., nanoelectronics, optical devices, and topological and correlated quantum matter. Tailoring the electronic properties of TMDs is essential to their applications in many directions. Here, we report that a highly controllable and uniform on-chip 2D metallization process converts a class of atomically thin TMDs into robust superconductors, a property belonging to none of the starting materials. As examples, we demonstrate the introduction of superconductivity into a class of 2D air-sensitive topological TMDs, including monolayers of Td-WTe2, 1T'-MoTe2 and 2H-MoTe2, as well as their natural and twisted bilayers, metalized with an ultrathin layer of Palladium. This class of TMDs are known to exhibit intriguing topological phases ranging from topological insulator, Weyl semimetal to fractional Chern insulator. The unique, high-quality two-dimensional metallization process is based on our recent findings of the long-distance, non-Fickian in-plane mass transport and chemistry in 2D that occur at relatively low temperatures and in devices fully encapsulated with inert insulating layers. Highly compatible with existing nanofabrication techniques for van der Waals (vdW) stacks, our results offer a route to designing and engineering superconductivity and topological phases in a class of correlated 2D materials., Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures. Oracle bone script, one of the earliest known forms of ancient Chinese writing, presents invaluable research materials for scholars studying the humanities and geography of the Shang Dynasty, dating back 3,000 years. The immense historical and cultural significance of these writings cannot be overstated. However, the passage of time has obscured much of their meaning, presenting a significant challenge in deciphering these ancient texts. With the advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI), employing AI to assist in deciphering Oracle Bone Characters (OBCs) has become a feasible option. Yet, progress in this area has been hindered by a lack of high-quality datasets. To address this issue, this paper details the creation of the HUST-OBC dataset. This dataset encompasses 77,064 images of 1,588 individual deciphered characters and 62,989 images of 9,411 undeciphered characters, with a total of 140,053 images, compiled from diverse sources. The hope is that this dataset could inspire and assist future research in deciphering those unknown OBCs. All the codes and datasets are available at https://github.com/Yuliang-Liu/Open-Oracle.

The earliest extant Chinese characters originate from oracle bone inscriptions, which are closely related to other East Asian languages. These inscriptions hold immense value for anthropology and archaeology. However, deciphering oracle bone script remains a formidable challenge, with only approximately 1,600 of the over 4,500 extant characters elucidated to date. Further scholarly investigation is required to comprehensively understand this ancient writing system. Artificial Intelligence technology is a promising avenue for deciphering oracle bone characters, particularly concerning their evolution. However, one of the challenges is the lack of datasets mapping the evolution of these characters over time. In this study, we systematically collected ancient characters from authoritative texts and websites spanning six historical stages: Oracle Bone Characters - OBC (15th century B.C.), Bronze Inscriptions - BI (13th to 221 B.C.), Seal Script - SS (11th to 8th centuries B.C.), Spring and Autumn period Characters - SAC (770 to 476 B.C.), Warring States period Characters - WSC (475 B.C. to 221 B.C.), and Clerical Script - CS (221 B.C. to 220 A.D.). Subsequently, we constructed an extensive dataset, namely EVolution Oracle Bone Characters (EVOBC), consisting of 229,170 images representing 13,714 distinct character categories. We conducted validation and simulated deciphering on the constructed dataset, and the results demonstrate its high efficacy in aiding the study of oracle bone script. This openly accessible dataset aims to digitalize ancient Chinese scripts across multiple eras, facilitating the decipherment of oracle bone script by examining the evolution of glyph forms.

Optical spectroscopy of quantum materials at ultralow temperatures is rarely explored, yet it may provide critical characterizations of quantum phases not possible using other approaches. We describe the development of a novel experimental platform that enables optical spectroscopic studies, together with standard electronic transport, of materials at millikelvin temperatures inside a dilution refrigerator. The instrument is capable of measuring both bulk crystals and micron-sized two-dimensional van der Waals materials and devices. We demonstrate the performance by implementing photocurrent-based Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy on a monolayer WTe$_2$ device and a multilayer 1T-TaS$_2$ crystal, with a spectral range available from the near-infrared to the terahertz regime and in magnetic fields up to 5 T. In the far-infrared regime, we achieve spectroscopic measurements at a base temperature as low as ~ 43 mK and a sample electron temperature of ~ 450 mK. While Landau's Fermi liquid theory provides the standard description for two- and three-dimensional (2D/3D) conductors, the physics of interacting one-dimensional (1D) conductors is governed by the distinct Luttinger liquid (LL) theory. Can a LL-like state, in which electronic excitations are fractionalized modes, emerge in a 2D system as a stable zero-temperature phase? This long-standing question, first brought up by Anderson decades ago, is crucial in the study of non-Fermi liquids but remains unsettled. A recent experiment identified a moir\'e superlattice of twisted bilayer tungsten ditelluride (tWTe_2) with a small interlayer twist angle as a 2D host of the LL physics at temperatures of a few kelvins. Here we report experimental evidence for a 2D anisotropic LL state in a substantially reduced temperature regime, down to at least 50 mK, spontaneously formed in a tWTe_2 system with a twist angle of ~ 3 degree. While the system is metallic-like and nearly isotropic above 2 K, a dramatically enhanced electronic anisotropy develops in the millikelvin regime, featuring distinct transport behaviors along two orthogonal in-plane directions. In the strongly anisotropic phase, we observe transport characteristics of a 2D LL phase, i.e., the universal power law scaling behaviors in across-wire conductance and a zero-bias dip in the differential resistance along the wire direction. Conventional vapor deposition or epitaxial growth of two-dimensional (2D) materials and heterostructures is conducted in a large chamber in which masses transport from the source to the substrate. Here we report a chamber-free, on-chip approach for growing a 2D crystalline structures directly in a nanoscale surface-confined 2D space. The method is based on a surprising discovery of a rapid, long-distance, non-Fickian transport of a uniform layer of atomically thin palladium (Pd) on a monolayer crystal of tungsten ditelluride (WTe2), at temperatures well below the known melting points of all materials involved. The resulting nanoconfined growth realizes a controlled formation of a stable new 2D crystalline material, Pd7WTe2 , when the monolayer seed is either free-standing or fully encapsulated in a van der Waals stack. The approach is generalizable and highly compatible with nanodevice fabrication, promising to expand the library of 2D materials and their functionalities.

The superconductor to insulator or metal transition in two dimensions (2D) provides a valuable platform for studying continuous quantum phase transitions (QPTs) and critical phenomena. Distinct theoretical models, including both fermionic and bosonic localization scenarios, have been developed, but many questions remain unsettled despite decades of research. Extending Nernst experiments down to millikelvin temperatures, we uncover anomalous quantum fluctuations and identify an unconventional superconducting quantum critical point (QCP) in a gate-tuned excitonic quantum spin Hall insulator (QSHI), the monolayer tungsten ditelluride (WTe2). The observed vortex Nernst effect reveals singular superconducting fluctuations in the resistive normal state induced by magnetic fields or temperature, even well above the transition. Near the doping-induced QCP, the Nernst signal driven by quantum fluctuations is exceptionally large in the millikelvin regime, with a coefficient of ~ 4,100 uV/KT at zero magnetic field, an indication of the proliferation of vortices. Surprisingly, the Nernst signal abruptly disappears when the doping falls below the critical value, in striking conflict with conventional expectations. This series of phenomena, which have no prior analogue, call for careful examinations of the mechanism of the QCP, including the possibility of a continuous QPT between two distinct ordered phases in the monolayer. Our experiments open a new avenue for studying unconventional QPTs and quantum critical matter.

Very thin free-flowing liquid sheets are promising targets for high-repetition-rate laser-ion acceleration. In this work, we report the generation of micrometer-thin free-flowing liquid sheets from the collision of two liquid jets, and study the vibration and jitter in their surface normal direction. The dependence of their motion amplitudes on the generation parameters is studied in detail. The origins of the vibration and jitter are discussed. Our results indicate that when the generation parameters are optimized, the motion amplitudes in the stable region can be stabilized below 3.7 {\mu}m to meet the stringent requirement of sheet position stability for a tight-focusing setup in laser-ion acceleration experiments., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, Original Reasearch

Post-acceleration of protons in helical coil targets driven by intense, ultrashort laser pulses can enhance the ion energy by utilizing the transient current originating from the self-discharging of the targets. The acceleration length of the protons can exceed a few millimeters, and the accelerating gradient is in the order of GeV/m. How to ensure the synchronization of the accelerating electric field with the protons is a crucial problem for an efficient post-acceleration. In this paper, we study how the electric field mismatch induced by the current dispersion affects the synchronous acceleration of the protons. We propose a scheme using a two-stage helical coil to control the current dispersion. With optimized parameters, the energy gain of protons is enhanced by 4 times. And it is expected that the proton energy would reach 45 MeV using a hundreds-terawatt laser, or over 100 MeV using a petawatt laser, by controlling the current dispersion.

Here we report the generation of MeV alpha-particles from H-11B fusion initiated by laser-accelerated boron ions. Boron ions with maximum energy of 6MeV and fluence of 10^9/MeV/sr@5MeV were generated from 60-nm-thick self-supporting boron nanofoils irradiated by 1J femtosecond pulses at an intensity of 10^19W/cm^2. By bombarding secondary hydrogenous targets with the boron ions, 3*10^5/sr alpha-particles from H-11B fusion were registered, which is consistent with the theoretical yield calculated from the measured boron energy spectra. Our results demonstrate an alternative way toward ultrashort MeV alpha-particle sources employing compact femtosecond lasers. The ion acceleration and product measurement scheme are referential for the studies on the ion stopping power and cross-section of the H-11B reaction in solid or plasma.

In this work, the high-energy-density plasmas (HEDP) evolved from joule-class-femtosecond-laser-irradiated nanowire array (NWA) targets are numerically and experimentally studied. The particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations indicate that ions accelerated in the sheath field around the nanowires' surface were eventually confined in NWA plasma, contributing most to the high energy densities. The protons emitted from the front surface of targets provide rich information about the interaction. The electron and ion energy densities in a broad target parameter range are given. Compared to planar targets, the ion energy density is one order of magnitude higher, and the volume of the HEDP is several-fold larger. At optimal target parameters, 8% of the laser energy can be converted to confined protons and results in ion energy densities of up to GJ/cm3 level. Experimental measurements of the emitted ions and neutrons from 2H(d, n)3He fusion from polyethylene and deuterated polyethylene NWA targets confirm the above results.

High-concurrency asynchronous training upon parameter server (PS) architecture and high-performance synchronous training upon all-reduce (AR) architecture are the most commonly deployed distributed training modes for recommendation models. Although synchronous AR training is designed to have higher training efficiency, asynchronous PS training would be a better choice for training speed when there are stragglers (slow workers) in the shared cluster, especially under limited computing resources. An ideal way to take full advantage of these two training modes is to switch between them upon the cluster status. However, switching training modes often requires tuning hyper-parameters, which is extremely time- and resource-consuming. We find two obstacles to a tuning-free approach: the different distribution of the gradient values and the stale gradients from the stragglers. This paper proposes Global Batch gradients Aggregation (GBA) over PS, which aggregates and applies gradients with the same global batch size as the synchronous training. A token-control process is implemented to assemble the gradients and decay the gradients with severe staleness. We provide the convergence analysis to reveal that GBA has comparable convergence properties with the synchronous training, and demonstrate the robustness of GBA the recommendation models against the gradient staleness. Experiments on three industrial-scale recommendation tasks show that GBA is an effective tuning-free approach for switching. Compared to the state-of-the-art derived asynchronous training, GBA achieves up to 0.2% improvement on the AUC metric, which is significant for the recommendation models. Meanwhile, under the strained hardware resource, GBA speeds up at least 2.4x compared to synchronous training.

In many web applications, deep learning-based CTR prediction models (deep CTR models for short) are widely adopted. Traditional deep CTR models learn patterns in a static manner, i.e., the network parameters are the same across all the instances. However, such a manner can hardly characterize each of the instances which may have different underlying distributions. It actually limits the representation power of deep CTR models, leading to sub-optimal results. In this paper, we propose an efficient, effective, and universal module, named as Adaptive Parameter Generation network (APG), which can dynamically generate parameters for deep CTR models on-the-fly based on different instances. Extensive experimental evaluation results show that APG can be applied to a variety of deep CTR models and significantly improve their performance. Meanwhile, APG can reduce the time cost by 38.7\% and memory usage by 96.6\% compared to a regular deep CTR model. Alleviating the delayed feedback problem is of crucial importance for the conversion rate(CVR) prediction in online advertising. Previous delayed feedback modeling methods using an observation window to balance the trade-off between waiting for accurate labels and consuming fresh feedback. Moreover, to estimate CVR upon the freshly observed but biased distribution with fake negatives, the importance sampling is widely used to reduce the distribution bias. While effective, we argue that previous approaches falsely treat fake negative samples as real negative during the importance weighting and have not fully utilized the observed positive samples, leading to suboptimal performance. In this work, we propose a new method, DElayed Feedback modeling with UnbiaSed Estimation, (DEFUSE), which aim to respectively correct the importance weights of the immediate positive, the fake negative, the real negative, and the delay positive samples at finer granularity. Specifically, we propose a two-step optimization approach that first infers the probability of fake negatives among observed negatives before applying importance sampling. To fully exploit the ground-truth immediate positives from the observed distribution, we further develop a bi-distribution modeling framework to jointly model the unbiased immediate positives and the biased delay conversions. Experimental results on both public and our industrial datasets validate the superiority of DEFUSE. A recent Letter by Zhu et al [Phys. Rev. Lett. 127, 247702 (2021)] claimed a unified mechanism for quantum oscillations (QOs) in graphite-gated 2D devices based on studies of three cases (WTe2, MoTe$_2$/WSe$_2$ heterobilayers and bilayer graphene (BLG)). The Luttinger liquid (LL) model of one-dimensional (1D) electronic systems provides a powerful tool for understanding strongly correlated physics including phenomena such as spin-charge separation. Substantial theoretical efforts have attempted to extend the LL phenomenology to two dimensions (2D), especially in models of closely packed arrays of 1D quantum wires, each being described as a LL. Such coupled-wire models have been successfully used to construct 2D anisotropic non-Fermi liquids, quantum Hall states, topological phases, and quantum spin liquids. However, an experimental demonstration of high-quality arrays of 1D LLs suitable for realizing these models remains absent. Here we report the experimental realization of 2D arrays of 1D LLs with crystalline quality in a moir\'e superlattice made of twisted bilayer tungsten ditelluride (tWTe$_{2}$). Originating from the anisotropic lattice of the monolayer, the moir\'e pattern of tWTe$_{2}$ hosts identical, parallel 1D electronic channels, separated by a fixed nanoscale distance, which is tunable by the interlayer twist angle. At a twist angle of ~ 5 degrees, we find that hole-doped tWTe$_{2}$ exhibits exceptionally large transport anisotropy with a resistance ratio of ~ 1000 between two orthogonal in-plane directions. The across-wire conductance exhibits power-law scaling behaviors, consistent with the formation of a 2D anisotropic phase that resembles an array of LLs. Nowadays, deep learning models are widely adopted in web-scale applications such as recommender systems, and online advertising. In these applications, embedding learning of categorical features is crucial to the success of deep learning models. In these models, a standard method is that each categorical feature value is assigned a unique embedding vector which can be learned and optimized. Although this method can well capture the characteristics of the categorical features and promise good performance, it can incur a huge memory cost to store the embedding table, especially for those web-scale applications. Such a huge memory cost significantly holds back the effectiveness and usability of EDRMs. In this paper, we propose a binary code based hash embedding method which allows the size of the embedding table to be reduced in arbitrary scale without compromising too much performance. Embedding learning for categorical features is crucial for the deep learning-based recommendation models (DLRMs). Each feature value is mapped to an embedding vector via an embedding learning process. Conventional methods configure a fixed and uniform embedding size to all feature values from the same feature field. However, such a configuration is not only sub-optimal for embedding learning but also memory costly. Existing methods that attempt to resolve these problems, either rule-based or neural architecture search (NAS)-based, need extensive efforts on the human design or network training. They are also not flexible in embedding size selection or in warm-start-based applications. In this paper, we propose a novel and effective embedding size selection scheme. Specifically, we design an Adaptively-Masked Twins-based Layer (AMTL) behind the standard embedding layer. AMTL generates a mask vector to mask the undesired dimensions for each embedding vector. The mask vector brings flexibility in selecting the dimensions and the proposed layer can be easily added to either untrained or trained DLRMs. Extensive experimental evaluations show that the proposed scheme outperforms competitive baselines on all the benchmark tasks, and is also memory-efficient, saving 60\% memory usage without compromising any performance metrics., Comment: CIKM 2021, 5 pages; The first two authors contributed equally to this work

The phenomenon of group motion is common in nature, ranging from the schools of fish, birds and insects, to avalanches, landslides and sand drift. If we treat objects as collectively moving particles, such phenomena can be studied from a physical point of view, and the research on many-body systems has proved that marvelous effects can arise from the simplest individuals. The motion of numerous individuals presents different dynamic phases related to the ordering of the system. However, it is usually difficult to study the dynamic ordering and their transitions through experiments. Electron bubble states formed in a two-dimensional electron gas, as a type of electron solids, can be driven by an external electric field and provide a platform to study the dynamic collective behaviors. Here, we demonstrate that noise spectrum is a powerful method to investigate the dynamics of bubble states. We observed not only the phenomena from dynamically ordered and disordered structures, but also unexpected alternations between them. Our results show that a dissipative system can convert between chaotic structures and ordered structures when tuning global parameters, which is concealed in conventional transport measurements of resistance or conductance. Cross features play an important role in click-through rate (CTR) prediction. Most of the existing methods adopt a DNN-based model to capture the cross features in an implicit manner. These implicit methods may lead to a sub-optimized performance due to the limitation in explicit semantic modeling. Although traditional statistical explicit semantic cross features can address the problem in these implicit methods, it still suffers from some challenges, including lack of generalization and expensive memory cost. Few works focus on tackling these challenges. In this paper, we take the first step in learning the explicit semantic cross features and propose Pre-trained Cross Feature learning Graph Neural Networks (PCF-GNN), a GNN based pre-trained model aiming at generating cross features in an explicit fashion. In real-world search, recommendation, and advertising systems, the multi-stage ranking architecture is commonly adopted. Such architecture usually consists of matching, pre-ranking, ranking, and re-ranking stages. In the pre-ranking stage, vector-product based models with representation-focused architecture are commonly adopted to account for system efficiency. However, it brings a significant loss to the effectiveness of the system. In this paper, a novel pre-ranking approach is proposed which supports complicated models with interaction-focused architecture. It achieves a better tradeoff between effectiveness and efficiency by utilizing the proposed learnable Feature Selection method based on feature Complexity and variational Dropout (FSCD). Evaluations in a real-world e-commerce sponsored search system for a search engine demonstrate that utilizing the proposed pre-ranking, the effectiveness of the system is significantly improved. Moreover, compared to the systems with conventional pre-ranking models, an identical amount of computational resource is consumed.

Estimating click-through rate (CTR) accurately has an essential impact on improving user experience and revenue in sponsored search. For CTR prediction model, it is necessary to make out user real-time search intention. Most of the current work is to mine their intentions based on user real-time behaviors. However, it is difficult to capture the intention when user behaviors are sparse, causing the behavior sparsity problem. Moreover, it is difficult for user to jump out of their specific historical behaviors for possible interest exploration, namely weak generalization problem. We propose a new approach Graph Intention Network (GIN) based on co-occurrence commodity graph to mine user intention. By adopting multi-layered graph diffusion, GIN enriches user behaviors to solve the behavior sparsity problem. By introducing co-occurrence relationship of commodities to explore the potential preferences, the weak generalization problem is also alleviated. To the best of our knowledge, the GIN method is the first to introduce graph learning for user intention mining in CTR prediction and propose end-to-end joint training of graph learning and CTR prediction tasks in sponsored search. At present, GIN has achieved excellent offline results on the real-world data of the e-commerce platform outperforming existing deep learning models, and has been running stable tests online and achieved significant CTR improvements.

We demonstrate the high-efficiency generation of water-window soft x-ray emissions from polyethylene nanowire array targets irradiated by femtosecond laser pulses at the intensity of 4*10^19 W/cm^2. The experimental results indicate more than one order of magnitude enhancement of the water-window x-ray emissions from the nanowire array targets compared to the planar targets. The highest energy conversion efficiency from laser to water-window x-rays is measured as 0.5%/sr, which comes from the targets with the longest nanowires. Supported by particle-in-cell simulations and atomic kinetic codes, the physics that leads to the high conversion efficiency is discussed.

Single-shot laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) measurements of multi-type free-standing ultrathin foils were performed in vacuum environment for 800 nm laser pulses with durations {\tau} ranging from 50 fs to 200 ps. Results show that the laser damage threshold fluences (DTFs) of the ultrathin foils are significantly lower than those of corresponding bulk materials. Wide band gap dielectric targets such as SiN and formvar have larger DTFs than those of semiconductive and conductive targets by 1-3 orders of magnitude depending on the pulse duration. The damage mechanisms for different types of targets are studied. Based on the measurement, the constrain of the LIDTs on the laser contrast is discussed.

We report the experimental results of simultaneous measurements on the electron and X-ray spectra from near-critical-density (NCD) double-layer targets irradiated by relativistic femtosecond pulses at the intensity of 5E19 W/cm^2. The dependence of the electron and X-ray spectra on the density and thickness of the NCD layer was studied. For the optimal targets, electrons with temperature of 5.5 MeV and X-rays with critical energy of 5 keV were obtained. 2D particle-in-cell simulations based on the experimental parameters confirm the electrons are accelerated in the plasma channel through direct laser acceleration, resulting in temperature significantly higher than the pondermotive temperature. Bright X-rays are generated from betatron emission and Thomson backscattering before the electrons leave the double-layer targets.

In strongly correlated materials, quasiparticle excitations can carry fractional quantum numbers. An intriguing possibility is the formation of fractionalized, charge-neutral fermions, e.g., spinons and fermionic excitons, that result in neutral Fermi surfaces and Landau quantization in an insulator. While previous experiments in quantum spin liquids, topological Kondo insulators, and quantum Hall systems have hinted at charge-neutral Fermi surfaces, evidence for their existence remains far from conclusive. Here we report experimental observation of Landau quantization in a two dimensional (2D) insulator, i.e., monolayer tungsten ditelluride (WTe$_{2}$), a large gap topological insulator. Using a detection scheme that avoids edge contributions, we uncover strikingly large quantum oscillations in the monolayer insulator's magnetoresistance, with an onset field as small as ~ 0.5 tesla. Despite the huge resistance, the oscillation profile, which exhibits many periods, mimics the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in metals. Remarkably, at ultralow temperatures the observed oscillations evolve into discrete peaks near 1.6 tesla, above which the Landau quantized regime is fully developed. Such a low onset field of quantization is comparable to high-mobility conventional two-dimensional electron gases. Our experiments call for further investigation of the highly unusual ground state of the WTe$_{2}$ monolayer. The interplay between topology and correlations can generate a variety of quantum phases, many of which remain to be explored. Recent advances have identified monolayer WTe2 as a promising material for doing so in a highly tunable fashion. The ground state of this two-dimensional (2D) crystal can be electrostatically tuned from a quantum spin Hall insulator (QSHI) to a superconductor. However, much remains unknown about the gap-opening mechanism of the insulating state. Here we report evidence that the QSHI is also an excitonic insulator (EI), arising from the spontaneous formation of electron-hole bound states (excitons). We reveal the presence of an intrinsic insulating state at the charge neutrality point (CNP) in clean samples and confirm the correlated nature of this charge-neutral insulator by tunneling spectroscopy. We provide evidence against alternative scenarios of a band insulator or a localized insulator and support the existence of an EI phase in the clean limit. These observations lay the foundation for understanding a new class of correlated insulators with nontrivial topology and identify monolayer WTe2 as a promising candidate for exploring quantum phases of ground-state excitons., Comment: 39 pages; Nat. We present the results of neutron detection in a laser plasma experiment with a CD$_2$ nanowire target. A hybrid semiconductor pixel detector Timepix3 covered with neutron converters was used for the detection of neutrons. D-D fusion neutrons were detected in a polyethylene converter through recoiled protons. Both the energy of recoiled protons and the time-of-flight of neutrons (and thus their energy) were determined. We report $(2.4 \pm 1.8) \times 10^7$ neutrons generated for 1~J of incoming laser energy. The acceleration of super-heavy ions (SHIs) from plasmas driven by ultrashort (tens of femtoseconds) laser pulses is a challenging topic waiting for breakthrough. The detecting and controlling of the ionization process, and the adoption of the optimal acceleration scheme are crucial for the generation of highly energetic SHIs. Here, we report the experimental results on the generation of deeply ionized super-heavy ions (Au) with unprecedented energy of 1.2 GeV utilizing ultrashort laser pulses (22 fs) at the intensity of 10^22 W/cm2. A novel self-calibrated diagnostic method was developed to acquire the absolute energy spectra and charge state distributions of Au ions abundant at the charge state of 51+ and reaching up to 61+. The measured charge state distributions supported by 2D particle-in-cell simulations serves as an additional tool to inspect the ionization dynamics associated with SHI acceleration, revealing that the laser intensity is the crucial parameter for the acceleration of Au ions over the pulse duration. The use of double-layer targets results in a prolongation of the acceleration time without sacrificing the strength of acceleration field, which is highly favorable for the generation of high-energy super heavy ions.

The spin-polarized even-denominator fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states in the second Landau level (LL), i.e. 5/2 and 7/2, may possess novel quasi-particle excitations obeying non-Abelian statistics. However, the spin polarization of the 7/2 FQH state has not been investigated experimentally and the spin polarization of the 5/2 FQH state from tilted field experiments remains controversial. Using a piezo-driven sample rotator with the lowest electron temperature down to 25 mK, we studied the energy gap of the even-denominator FQH states in the second LL by precise control of the tilted angles with a resolution less than 0.1{\deg}. We observed two different energy gap dependences on the in-plane magnetic field for 5/2, 7/2, other FQH states (7/3 and 8/3) in the second LL and reentrant integer quantum Hall (RIQH) states in the third LL. Though the transition fields vary from states, their corresponding in-plane magnetic lengths are comparable to the quantum well thickness of the sample, which may result from the influence of the finite-thickness effect. At low in-plane magnetic fields, before the conjectured finite-thickness effect starts to dominate, the energy gaps of both 5/2 and 7/2 states show a non-decreasing behavior, supporting spin-polarized ground states. Our results also suggest that the 7/3, 8/3 FQH states, and the RIQH states in the third LL are spin-polarized or partially spin-polarized.

Recent progresses in condensed matter physics, such as graphene, topological insulator and Weyl semimetal, often origin from the specific topological symmetries of their lattice structures. Quantum states with different degrees of freedom, e.g. spin, valley, layer, etc., arise from these symmetries, and the coherent superpositions of these states form multiple energy subbands. The pseudospin, a concept analogy to the Dirac spinor matrices, is a successful description of such multi-subband systems. When the electron-electron interaction dominates, many-body quantum phases arise. They usually have digitized pseudospin polarizations and exhibit sharp phase transitions at certain universal critical pseudospin energy splittings. In this manuscript, we present our remarkable discovery of hydrostatic pressure induced degeneracy between the two lowest Landau levels. This degeneracy is evidenced by the pseudospin polarization transitions of the fragile correlated quantum liquid phases near Landau level filling factor $\nu$ = 3/2. Benefitted from the constant hole concentration and the sensitive nature of these transitions, we can study the fine-tuning effect of the hydrostatic pressure of the order of 10 $\mu$eV, well beyond the meV-level state-of-the-art resolution of other techniques.

Piezo-driven rotator is convenient for tilted magnetic field experiments due to its precise angle control. However, the rotator itself and the sample mounted on it are difficult to be cooled down because of extra heat leaks and presumably bad thermal contacts from the piezo. Here, we report a piezo-driven sample rotation system designed for ultra-low temperature environment. The sample, as well as the rotating sample holder, can be cooled to as low as 25 mK by customized thermal links and thermal contacts. More importantly, the electron temperature in the electrical transport measurements can also be cooled down to 25 mK with the help of home-made filters. To demonstrate the application of our rotation system at ultra-low electron temperature, a measurement revealing tilt-induced localization and delocalization in the second Landau level of two-dimensional electron gas is provided., Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures

We report a positioning method for transparent targets with an accuracy of \SI{2}{\mu m} for a compact laser proton accelerator. The positioning system consists of two light-emitting diodes (LED), a long working distance objective and two charge coupled devices (CCD) for illumination, imaging and detection, respectively. We developed a defocusing method making transparent targets visible as phase objects and applied it to our system. Precise positioning of transparent targets can be realized by means of minimizing the image contrast of the phase objects. Fast positioning based on the relationship between the radius of spherical aberration ring and defocusing distance is also realized. Among the various geometries to study the fractional quantum Hall effect in two dimensional electron gas, the Corbino disc owns the advantage to probe the bulk properties directly. In this work we explore the influence of in-plane electric fields on the stability of the 5/2 fractional quantum Hall state realized in Corbino geometry. The effect of weak electric fields is investigated at ultra-low temperatures in order to compare with a theoretical proposal of enhanced Pfaffian state under weak electric fields.

We report low-temperature transport measurements in strained InAs/Ga0.68In0.32Sb quantum wells, which supports time-reversal symmetry-protected helical edge states. The temperature and bias voltage dependence of the helical edge conductance for devices of various sizes are consistent with the theoretical expectation of a weakly interacting helical edge state. Moreover, we found that the magnetoresistance of the helical edge states is related to the edge interaction effect and the disorder strength., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures

We measured the activation energy gap of the N = 2 bubble states using tilted-field technique in two GaAs/AlGaAs samples with Corbino geometry, and observed monotonically decreasing energy gaps with the increasing total magnetic field. The observed tilt angle dependence is discussed based on magneto-orbital coupling and finite-size effect. We also found a bubble state at an uncommon filling factor of 4.67, with an unanticipated energy gap of up to 5.35 K and opposite in-plane field dependence.

Even-denominator fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states, such as 5/2 and 7/2, have been well known in a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) for decades and are still investigated as candidates of non-Abelian statistics. In this paper, we present the observation of a 3/2 FQH plateau in a single-layer 2DEG with lateral confinement at a bulk filling factor of 5/3. The 3/2 FQH plateau is quantized at (h/e^2 )/(3/2) within 0.02%, and can survive up to 300 mK. This even-denominator FQH plateau may imply intriguing edge structure and excitation in FQH system with lateral confinement. The observations in this work demonstrate that understanding the effect of the lateral confinement on the many-body system is critical in the pursuit of important theoretical proposals involving edge physics, such as the demonstration of non-Abelian statistics and the realization of braiding for fault-tolerant quantum computation., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures

Some theories predict that the filling factor 5/2 fractional quantum Hall state can exhibit non-Abelian statistics, which makes it a candidate for fault-tolerant topological quantum computation. Although the non-Abelian Pfaffian state and its particle-hole conjugate, the anti-Pfaffian state, are the most plausible wave functions for the 5/2 state, there are a number of alternatives with either Abelian or non-Abelian statistics. Recent experiments suggest that the tunneling exponents are more consistent with an Abelian state rather than a non-Abelian state. Here, we present edge-current-tunneling experiments in geometrically confined quantum point contacts, which indicate that Abelian and non-Abelian states compete at filling factor 5/2. Our results are consistent with a transition from an Abelian state to a non-Abelian state in a single quantum point contact when the confinement is tuned. Our observation suggests that there is an intrinsic non-Abelian 5/2 ground state, but that the appropriate confinement is necessary to maintain it. This observation is important not only for understanding the physics of the 5/2 state, but also for the design of future topological quantum computation devices.

We have studied the breakdown of the integer quantum Hall (QH) effect with fully broken symmetry, in an ultra-high mobility graphene device sandwiched between two single crystal hexagonal boron nitride substrates. The evolution and stabilities of the QH states are studied quantitatively through the nonlinear transport with dc Hall voltage bias. The mechanism of the QH breakdown in graphene and the movement of the Fermi energy with the electrical Hall field are discussed. This is the first study in which the stabilities of fully symmetry broken QH states are probed all together. Diverse phenomena emerge at the interface between band insulators LaAlO3 and SrTiO3, such as superconductivity and ferromagnetism, showing an opportunity for potential applications as well as bringing fundamental research interests. Particularly, the two-dimensional electron gas formed at LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface offers an appealing platform for quantum phase transition from a superconductor to a weakly localized metal. Here we report the superconductor-metal transition in superconducting two-dimensional electron gas formed at LaAlO3/SrTiO3(110) interface driven by a perpendicular magnetic field. Interestingly, when approaching the quantum critical point, the dynamic critical exponent is not a constant but a diverging value, which is a direct evidence of quantum Griffiths singularity raised from quenched disorder at ultralow temperatures. Furthermore, the hysteretic property of magnetoresistance was firstly observed at LaAlO3/SrTiO3(110) interfaces, which suggests potential coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism.

We report on the observation of a helical Luttinger-liquid in the edge of InAs/GaSb quantum spin Hall insulator, which shows characteristic suppression of conductance at low temperature and low bias voltage. Moreover, the conductance shows power-law behavior as a function of temperature and bias voltage. The results underscore the strong electron-electron interaction effect in transport of InAs/GaSb edge states. Because of the fact that the Fermi velocity of the edge modes is controlled by gates, the Luttinger parameter can be fine tuned. Realization of a tunable Luttinger-liquid offers a one-dimensional model system for future studies of predicted correlation effects., Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures

While in the lowest Landau level the electron-electron interaction leads to the formation of the Wigner crystal, in higher Landau levels a solid phase with multiple electrons in a lattice site of crystal was predicted, which was called the bubble phase. Reentrant integer quantum Hall states are believed to be the insulating bubble phase pinned by disorder. We carry out nonlinear transport measurements on the reentrant states and study the de-pinning of the bubble phase, which is complementary to previous microwave measurements and provides unique information. In this study, conductivity is directly measured with Corbino geometry. Based on the threshold electric field of de-pinning, a phase diagram of the reentrant state is mapped. We discuss an interaction-driven topological phase transition between the integer quantum Hall state and the reentrant integer quantum Hall state., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures
