Accurate characterization of ferroelectric properties in polymer piezoelectrics is critical for optimizing the performance of flexible and wearable ultrasound transducers, such as screen-printed PVDF devices. Standard charge measurement techniques, like the Sawyer-Tower circuit, often fall short when applied to ferroelectric polymers due to low-frequency leakage. In this work, we present PEtra, an open-source and versatile piezoelectric loop tracer. PEtra employs a transimpedance amplifier (LMP7721, TI) to convert picoampere-level currents into measurable voltages, covering a frequency range of 0.1 Hz to 5 Hz for a gain setting of 10^7 V/A, and 0.1 Hz to 200 Hz for gain settings between 10^3 V/A to 10^6 V/A (10-fold increments). We demonstrate through simulations and experimental validations that PEtra achieves a sensitivity down to 2 pA, effectively addressing the limitations of traditional charge measurement methods. Compared to the Sawyer-Tower circuit, PEtra directly amplifies currents without the need for a reference capacitor. As a result, it is less susceptible to leakage and can operate at lower frequencies, improving measurement accuracy and reliability. PEtra's design is fully open source, offering researchers and engineers a versatile tool to drive advancements in flexible PVDF transducer technology.

We propose a seasonal AR model with time-varying parameter processes in both the regular and seasonal parameters. The model is parameterized to guarantee stability at every time point and can accommodate multiple seasonal periods. The time evolution is modeled by dynamic shrinkage processes to allow for long periods of essentially constant parameters, periods of rapid change as well as abrupt jumps. A Gibbs sampler is developed with a particle Gibbs update step for the AR parameter trajectories. The near-degeneracy of the model, caused by the dynamic shrinkage processes, is shown to pose a challenge for particle methods. To address this, a more robust, faster and accurate approximate sampler based on the extended Kalman filter is proposed. The model and the numerical effectiveness of the Gibbs sampler are investigated on simulated and real data. An application to more than a century of monthly US industrial production data shows interesting clear changes in seasonality over time, particularly during the Great Depression and the recent Covid-19 pandemic. We propose a new data representation method based on Quantum Cognition Machine Learning and apply it to manifold learning, specifically to the estimation of intrinsic dimension of data sets. The idea is to learn a representation of each data point as a quantum state, encoding both local properties of the point as well as its relation with the entire data. Inspired by ideas from quantum geometry, we then construct from the quantum states a point cloud equipped with a quantum metric. The metric exhibits a spectral gap whose location corresponds to the intrinsic dimension of the data. The proposed estimator is based on the detection of this spectral gap. When tested on synthetic manifold benchmarks, our estimates are shown to be robust with respect to the introduction of point-wise Gaussian noise. This is in contrast to current state-of-the-art estimators, which tend to attribute artificial ``shadow dimensions'' to noise artifacts, leading to overestimates. This is a significant advantage when dealing with real data sets, which are inevitably affected by unknown levels of noise. We show the applicability and robustness of our method on real data, by testing it on the ISOMAP face database, MNIST, and the Wisconsin Breast Cancer Dataset.

In modern society, service robots are increasingly recognized for their wide range of practical applications. In large and crowded social spaces, such as museums and hospitals, these robots are required to safely move in the environment while exhibiting user-friendly behavior. Ensuring the safe and socially acceptable operation of robots in such settings presents several challenges. To enhance the social acceptance in the design process of service robots, we present a systematic analysis of requirements, categorized into functional and non-functional. These requirements are further classified into different categories, with a single requirement potentially belonging to multiple categories. Finally, considering the specific case of a receptionist robotic agent, we discuss the requirements it should possess to ensure social acceptance.

The damage detection problem in mechanical systems, using vibration measurements, is commonly called Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). Many tools are able to detect damages by changes in the vibration pattern, mainly, when damages induce nonlinear behavior. However, a more difficult problem is to detect structural variation associated with damage, when the mechanical system has nonlinear behavior even in the reference condition. In these cases, more sophisticated methods are required to detect if the changes in the response are based on some structural variation or changes in the vibration regime, because both can generate nonlinearities. Among the many ways to solve this problem, the use of the Volterra series has several favorable points, because they are a generalization of the linear convolution, allowing the separation of linear and nonlinear contributions by input filtering through the Volterra kernels. On the other hand, the presence of uncertainties in mechanical systems, due to noise, geometric imperfections, manufacturing irregularities, environmental conditions, and others, can also change the responses, becoming more difficult the damage detection procedure. An approach based on a stochastic version of Volterra series is proposed to be used in the detection of a breathing crack in a beam vibrating in a nonlinear regime of motion, even in reference condition (without crack). The system uncertainties are simulated by the variation imposed in the linear stiffness and damping coefficient. The results show, that the nonlinear analysis done, considering the high order Volterra kernels, allows the approach to detect the crack with a small propagation and probability confidence, even in the presence of uncertainties.

The damage detection problem becomes a more difficult task when the intrinsically nonlinear behavior of the structures and the natural data variation are considered in the analysis because both phenomena can be confused with damage if linear and deterministic approaches are implemented. Therefore, this work aims the experimental application of a stochastic version of the Volterra series combined with a novelty detection approach to detect damage in an initially nonlinear system taking into account the measured data variation, caused by the presence of uncertainties. The experimental setup is composed by a cantilever beam operating in a nonlinear regime of motion, even in the healthy condition, induced by the presence of a magnet near to the free extremity. The damage associated with mass changes in a bolted connection (nuts loosed) is detected based on the comparison between linear and nonlinear contributions of the stochastic Volterra kernels in the total response, estimated in the reference and damaged conditions. The experimental measurements were performed on different days to add natural variation to the data measured. The results obtained through the stochastic proposed approach are compared with those obtained by the deterministic version of the Volterra series, showing the advantage of the stochastic model use when we consider the experimental data variation with the capability to detect the presence of the damage with statistical confidence. Besides, the nonlinear metric used presented a higher sensitivity to the occurrence of the damage compared with the linear one, justifying the application of a nonlinear metric when the system exhibits intrinsically nonlinear behavior.

We prove that the Fisher information is monotone decreasing in time along solutions of the space-homogeneous Boltzmann equation for a large class of collision kernels covering all classical interactions derived from systems of particles. For general collision kernels, a sufficient condition for the monotonicity of the Fisher information along the flow is related to the best constant for an integro-differential inequality for functions on the sphere, which belongs in the family of the Log-Sobolev inequalities. As a consequence, we establish the existence of global smooth solutions to the space-homogeneous Boltzmann equation in the main situation of interest where this was not known, namely the regime of very soft potentials. This is opening the path to the completion of both the classical program of qualitative study of space-homogeneous Boltzmann equation, initiated by Carleman, and the program of using the Fisher information in the study of the Boltzmann equation, initiated by McKean. Data poisoning attacks on clustering algorithms have received limited attention, with existing methods struggling to scale efficiently as dataset sizes and feature counts increase. These attacks typically require re-clustering the entire dataset multiple times to generate predictions and assess the attacker's objectives, significantly hindering their scalability. This paper addresses these limitations by proposing Sonic, a novel genetic data poisoning attack that leverages incremental and scalable clustering algorithms, e.g., FISHDBC, as surrogates to accelerate poisoning attacks against graph-based and density-based clustering methods, such as HDBSCAN. We empirically demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of Sonic in poisoning the target clustering algorithms. We then conduct a comprehensive analysis of the factors affecting the scalability and transferability of poisoning attacks against clustering algorithms, and we conclude by examining the robustness of hyperparameters in our attack strategy Sonic., Comment: preprint paper

This paper studies the dynamics of a network of diffusively-coupled bistable systems. Under mild conditions and without requiring smoothness of the vector field, we analyze the network dynamics and show that the solutions converge globally to the set of equilibria for generic monotone (but not necessarily strictly monotone) regulatory functions. Sufficient conditions for global state synchronization are provided. Finally, by adopting a piecewise linear approximation of the vector field, we determine the existence, location and stability of the equilibria as function of the coupling gain. The theoretical results are illustrated with numerical simulations.

Radio Frequency (RF) wireless power transfer is a promising technology that has the potential to constantly power small Internet of Things (IoT) devices, enabling even battery-less systems and reducing their maintenance requirements. However, to achieve this ambitious goal, carefully designed RF energy harvesting (EH) systems are needed to minimize the conversion losses and the conversion efficiency of the limited power. For intelligent internet of things sensors and devices, which often have non-constant power requirements, an additional power management stage with energy storage is needed to temporarily provide a higher power output than the power being harvested. This paper proposes an RF wireless power energy conversion system for miniaturized IoT composed of an impedance matching network, a rectifier, and power management with energy storage. The proposed sub-system has been experimentally validated and achieved an overall power conversion efficiency (PCE) of over 30 % for an input power of -10 dBm and a peak efficiency of 57 % at 3 dBm.

In this paper, we present an application of the optimal control theory to orbital transfer of Low Earth Orbit satellites. The optimal control problem is treated with Dynamic Programming techniques which require solving the Hamilton--Jacobi--Bellman equation on a suitable state space, with the reconstruction of the optimal controls made in the form of a static feedback. In order to validate the numerical scheme without the complexity of the full model, this first study sets the problem in planar form, thus working in a four-dimensional state space. We will study various techniques to speed up the computation, and assess the accuracy of the numerical solution. This project is born from the attempt of evaluating and applying direct method of optimal control techniques based on Dynamic Programming as a complementary approach to the well known indirect methods, as Pontryagin or Lawden. In particular, the final aim is to treat the case of low thrust engines from real use cases, in the full 3-D problem.

Strip and pixels sensors, fabricated on high resistivity silicon substrate, normally of p-type, are used in detectors for High Energy Physics (HEP) typically in a hybrid detector assembly. Furthermore, and owing to their inherent advantages over hybrid sensors, Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (MAPS) fabricated in CMOS technology have been increasingly implemented in HEP experiments. In all cases, their use in higher radiation areas (HL-LHC and beyond) will require options to improve their radiation hardness and time resolution. These aspects demand a deep understanding of their radiation damage and reliable models to predict their behaviours at high fluences. As a first step, we fabricated several Schottky and n-on-p diodes, to allow a comparison of results and provide a backup solution for test devices, on 6 or 4-inch p-type silicon wafers with 50 {\mu}m epitaxial thickness and of doping concentration as they are normally used in HEP detectors and CMOS MAPS devices. In this paper, details of the design and fabrication process, along with test results of the fabricated devices before irradiation, will be provided. Additional test results on irradiated devices will be provided in subsequent publications.

We introduce a novel adaptive Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) methodology for efficient construction of surrogate models for Bayesian inverse problems with expensive forward model evaluations. An adaptive design strategy focuses on optimizing both the positioning and simulation accuracy of training data in order to reduce the computational cost of simulating training data without compromising the fidelity of the posterior distributions of parameters. The method interleaves a goal-oriented active learning algorithm selecting evaluation points and tolerances based on the expected impact on the Kullback-Leibler divergence of surrogated and true posterior with a Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling of the posterior. Mass customization and shorter manufacturing cycles are becoming more important among small and medium-sized companies. However, classical industrial robots struggle to cope with product variation and dynamic environments. In this paper, we present CoBT, a collaborative programming by demonstration framework for generating reactive and modular behavior trees. CoBT relies on a single demonstration and a combination of data-driven machine learning methods with logic-based declarative learning to learn a task, thus eliminating the need for programming expertise or long development times. The proposed framework is experimentally validated on 7 manipulation tasks and we show that CoBT achieves approx. 93% success rate overall with an average of 7.5s programming time. In the field of control engineering, the connection between Signal Temporal Logic (STL) and time-varying Control Barrier Functions (CBF) has attracted considerable attention. CBFs have demonstrated notable success in ensuring the safety of critical applications by imposing constraints on system states, while STL allows for precisely specifying spatio-temporal constraints on the behavior of robotic systems. Leveraging these methodologies, this paper addresses the safety-critical navigation problem, in Socially Responsible Navigation (SRN) context, presenting a CBF-based STL motion planning methodology. This methodology enables task completion at any time within a specified time interval considering a dynamic system subject to velocity constraints. The proposed approach involves real-time computation of a smooth CBF, with the computation of a dynamically adjusted parameter based on the available path space and the maximum allowable velocity. A simulation study is conducted to validate the methodology, ensuring safety in the presence of static and dynamic obstacles and demonstrating its compliance with spatio-temporal constraints under non-linear velocity constraints.

Over the past decade, a multitude of service robots have been developed to fulfill a wide range of practical purposes. Notably, roles such as reception and robotic guidance have garnered extensive popularity. In these positions, robots are progressively assuming the responsibilities traditionally held by human staff in assisting customers. Ensuring the safe and socially acceptable operation of robots in such environments poses a fundamental challenge within the context of Socially Responsible Navigation (SRN). This article presents an architecture for user identification and social navigation with a mobile robot that employs computer vision, machine learning, and artificial intelligence algorithms to identify and guide users in a social navigation context, thereby providing an intuitive and user-friendly experience with the robot.

A motion planning methodology based on the combination of Control Barrier Functions (CBF) and Signal Temporal Logic (STL) is employed in this paper. This methodology allows task completion at any point within a specified time interval, considering a dynamic system subject to velocity constraints. In this work, we apply this approach into the context of Socially Responsible Navigation (SRN), introducing a rotation constraint. This constraint is designed to maintain the user within the robot's field of view (FOV), enhancing human-robot interaction with the concept of side-by-side human-robot companion. This angular constraint offers the possibility to customize social navigation to specific needs, thereby enabling safe SRN. Its validation is carried out through simulations demonstrating the system's effectiveness in adhering to spatio-temporal constraints, including those related to robot velocity, rotation, and the presence of static and dynamic obstacles.

The transformer neural network has significantly out-shined all other neural network architectures as the engine behind large language models. We provide a theoretical analysis of the expressivity of the transformer architecture through the lens of topos theory. From this viewpoint, we show that many common neural network architectures, such as the convolutional, recurrent and graph convolutional networks, can be embedded in a pretopos of piecewise-linear functions, but that the transformer necessarily lives in its topos completion. In particular, this suggests that the two network families instantiate different fragments of logic: the former are first order, whereas transformers are higher-order reasoners. Analogue test structures were fabricated using the Tower Partners Semiconductor Co. CMOS 65 nm ISC process. The purpose was to characterise and qualify this process and to optimise the sensor for the next generation of Monolithic Active Pixels Sensors for high-energy physics. The technology was explored in several variants which differed by: doping levels, pixel geometries and pixel pitches (10-25 $\mu$m). These variants have been tested following exposure to varying levels of irradiation up to 3 MGy and $10^{16}$ 1 MeV n$_\text{eq}$ cm$^{-2}$. Here the results from prototypes that feature direct analogue output of a 4$\times$4 pixel matrix are reported, allowing the systematic and detailed study of charge collection properties. Measurements were taken both using $^{55}$Fe X-ray sources and in beam tests using minimum ionizing particles. The results not only demonstrate the feasibility of using this technology for particle detection but also serve as a reference for future applications and optimisations.

A multi-output Gaussian process (GP) is introduced as a model for the joint posterior distribution of the local predictive ability of set of models and/or experts, conditional on a vector of covariates, from historical predictions in the form of log predictive scores. Following a power transformation of the log scores, a GP with Gaussian noise can be used, which allows faster computation by first using Hamiltonian Monte Carlo to sample the hyper-parameters of the GP from a model where the latent GP surface has been marginalized out, and then using these draws to generate draws of joint predictive ability conditional on a new vector of covariates. A Gaussian process is proposed as a model for the posterior distribution of the local predictive ability of a model or expert, conditional on a vector of covariates, from historical predictions in the form of log predictive scores. Assuming Gaussian expert predictions and a Gaussian data generating process, a linear transformation of the predictive score follows a noncentral chi-squared distribution with one degree of freedom. Motivated by this we develop a noncentral chi-squared Gaussian process regression to flexibly model local predictive ability, with the posterior distribution of the latent GP function and kernel hyperparameters sampled by Hamiltonian Monte Carlo. We show that a cube-root transformation of the log scores is approximately Gaussian with homoscedastic variance, making it possible to estimate the model much faster by marginalizing the latent GP function analytically. A multi-output Gaussian process regression is also introduced to model the dependence in predictive ability between experts, both for inference and prediction purposes. Evaluating the adversarial robustness of deep networks to gradient-based attacks is challenging. While most attacks consider $\ell_2$- and $\ell_\infty$-norm constraints to craft input perturbations, only a few investigate sparse $\ell_1$- and $\ell_0$-norm attacks. In particular, $\ell_0$-norm attacks remain the least studied due to the inherent complexity of optimizing over a non-convex and non-differentiable constraint. However, evaluating adversarial robustness under these attacks could reveal weaknesses otherwise left untested with more conventional $\ell_2$- and $\ell_\infty$-norm attacks. In this work, we propose a novel $\ell_0$-norm attack, called $\sigma$-zero, which leverages a differentiable approximation of the $\ell_0$ norm to facilitate gradient-based optimization, and an adaptive projection operator to dynamically adjust the trade-off between loss minimization and perturbation sparsity. Extensive evaluations using MNIST, CIFAR10, and ImageNet datasets, involving robust and non-robust models, show that $\sigma$-zero finds minimum $\ell_0$-norm adversarial examples without requiring any time-consuming hyperparameter tuning, and that it outperforms all competing sparse attacks in terms of success rate, perturbation size, and efficiency., Comment: Code available at https://github.com/Cinofix/sigma-zero-adversarial-attack

In a recent paper, we have studied the Teukolsky equations for fermions with mass $m_e\neq 0$ and rotating black hole of mass $M$. There, we have studied two cases: $\tilde{m}_e=m_e\,M^{-1}\ll 1$ and $a\omega\ll 1$; $\tilde{m}_e\ll 1$ and $a\omega \gtrsim 1$. Here we study the two remaining case case in which $\tilde{m}_e\gtrsim 1$ and $a\omega\ll 1$ using a semi-analytical approach and $\tilde{m}_e\gtrsim 1$ and $a\omega\gtrsim 1$ using a numerical approach. In this work, we aim at solving the Teukolsky equations for a fermion with mass $m_e\neq 0$ in the presence of a rotating black hole with mass $M$. We consider two different regimes: $\tilde{m}_e= M^{-1} m_e\ll 1$ and $a\omega \ll 1$; $\tilde{m}_e\ll 1$ and $a\omega \gtrsim 1$. We treat each of these two regimes in different ways: we use a perturbative approach for the first, similar to the \emph{usual} one employed for spin 0, 1, 2 and mass-less 1/2 fields, but with two small parameters (a$\omega$ and $\tilde{m}_e$); as we shall see, the second can be treated with a semi-analytical approach. In a forthcoming paper we shall study the remaining two cases in which $\tilde{m}_e \gtrsim 1$, while $a\omega \ll 1$ or $a\omega \gtrsim 1$. The regime with $\tilde{m}_e \ll 1$, but $a\omega\gtrsim 1$ is probably the most interesting from the astrophysics point of view, but this last two cases might be of some interest for the study of the interaction of fermions with very small black holes, which may be formed, for example, in the last stages of the Hawking evaporation., Comment: 17 pages

Hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) is a material having an intrinsically high radiation hardness that can be deposited on flexible substrates like Polyimide. For these properties a-Si:H can be used for the production of flexible sensors. a-Si:H sensors can be successfully utilized in dosimetry, beam monitoring for particle physics (x-ray, electron, gamma-ray and proton detection) and radiotherapy, radiation flux measurement for space applications (study of solar energetic particles and stellar events) and neutron flux measurements. In this paper we have studied the dosimetric x-ray response of n-i-p diodes deposited on Polyimide. We measured the linearity of the photocurrent response to x-rays versus dose-rate from which we have extracted the dosimetric x-ray sensitivity at various bias voltages. In particular low bias voltage operation has been studied to assess the high energy efficiency of these kind of sensor. A measurement of stability of x-ray response versus time has been shown. The effect of detectors annealing has been studied. Operation under bending at various bending radii is also shown.

Background and objectives: Patients suffering from neurological diseases may develop dysarthria, a motor speech disorder affecting the execution of speech. Close and quantitative monitoring of dysarthria evolution is crucial for enabling clinicians to promptly implement patient management strategies and maximizing effectiveness and efficiency of communication functions in term of restoring, compensating or adjusting. In the clinical assessment of orofacial structures and functions, at rest condition or during speech and non-speech movements, a qualitative evaluation is usually performed, throughout visual observation. Methods: To overcome limitations posed by qualitative assessments, this work presents a store-and-forward self-service telemonitoring system that integrates, within its cloud architecture, a convolutional neural network (CNN) for analyzing video recordings acquired by individuals with dysarthria. This architecture, called facial landmark Mask RCNN, aims at locating facial landmarks as a prior for assessing the orofacial functions related to speech and examining dysarthria evolution in neurological diseases. Results: When tested on the Toronto NeuroFace dataset, a publicly available annotated dataset of video recordings from patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and stroke, the proposed CNN achieved a normalized mean error equal to 1.79 on localizing the facial landmarks. We also tested our system in a real-life scenario on 11 bulbar-onset ALS subjects, obtaining promising outcomes in terms of facial landmark position estimation. Discussion and conclusions: This preliminary study represents a relevant step towards the use of remote tools to support clinicians in monitoring the evolution of dysarthria.

Piezoelectricity of organic polymers has attracted increasing interest because of several advantages they exhibit over traditional inorganic ceramics. While most organic piezoelectrics rely on the presence of intrinsic local dipoles, a highly nonlocal electronic polarization can be foreseen in conjugated polymers, characterised by delocalized and highly responsive ${\pi}$-electrons. These 1D systems represent a physical realization of a Thouless pump, a mechanism of adiabatic charge transport of topological nature which results, as shown in this work, in anomalously large dynamical effective charges, inversely proportional to the band gap energy. A structural (ferroelectric) phase transition further contributes to an enhancement of the piezoelectric response reminiscent of that observed in piezoelectric perovskites close to morphotropic phase boundaries. First-principles Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations performed in two representative conjugated polymers using hybrid functionals, show that state-of-the-art organic piezoelectric are outperformed by piezoelectric conjugated polymers, mostly thanks to strongly anomalous effective charges of carbon, larger than 5e - ordinary values being of the order of 1e - and reaching the giant value of 30e for band gaps of the order of 1 eV., Comment: 23 pages, 12 figures

Context. Galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) and solar particles with energies greater than tens of MeV penetrate spacecraft and instruments hosted aboard space missions. The Solar Orbiter Metis coronagraph is aimed at observing the solar corona in both visible (VL) and ultraviolet (UV) light. Particle tracks are observed in the Metis images of the corona. An algorithm has been implemented in the Metis processing electronics to detect the VL image pixels crossed by cosmic rays. This algorithm was initially enabled for the VL instrument only, since the process of separating the particle tracks in the UV images has proven to be very challenging. Aims. We study the impact of the overall bulk of particles of galactic and solar origin on the Metis coronagraph images. We discuss the effects of the increasing solar activity after the Solar Orbiter mission launch on the secondary particle production in the spacecraft. Methods. We compared Monte Carlo simulations of GCRs crossing or interacting in the Metis VL CMOS sensor to observations gathered in 2020 and 2022. We also evaluated the impact of solar energetic particle events of different intensities on the Metis images. Results. The study of the role of abundant and rare cosmic rays in firing pixels in the Metis VL images of the corona allows us to estimate the efficiency of the algorithm applied for cosmic-ray track removal from the images and to demonstrate that the instrument performance had remained unchanged during the first two years of the Solar Orbiter operations. The outcome of this work can be used to estimate the Solar Orbiter instrument's deep charging and the order of magnitude for energetic particles crossing the images of Metis and other instruments such as STIX and EUI., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

The growing spread of robots for service and industrial purposes calls for versatile, intuitive and portable interaction approaches. In particular, in industrial environments, operators should be able to interact with robots in a fast, effective, and possibly effortless manner. To this end, reality enhancement techniques have been used to achieve efficient management and simplify interactions, in particular in manufacturing and logistics processes. Building upon this, in this paper we propose a system based on mixed reality that allows a ubiquitous interface for heterogeneous robotic systems in dynamic scenarios, where users are involved in different tasks and need to interact with different robots. By means of mixed reality, users can interact with a robot through manipulation of its virtual replica, which is always colocated with the user and is extracted when interaction is needed. The system has been tested in a simulated intralogistics setting, where different robots are present and require sporadic intervention by human operators, who are involved in other tasks. In our setting we consider the presence of drones and AGVs with different levels of autonomy, calling for different user interventions. We constructively prove that every deep ReLU network can be rewritten as a functionally identical three-layer network with weights valued in the extended reals. Based on this proof, we provide an algorithm that, given a deep ReLU network, finds the explicit weights of the corresponding shallow network. Deep ReLU Networks can be decomposed into a collection of linear models, each defined in a region of a partition of the input space. This paper provides three results extending this theory. First, we extend this linear decompositions to Graph Neural networks and tensor convolutional networks, as well as networks with multiplicative interactions. Second, we provide proofs that neural networks can be understood as interpretable models such as Multivariate Decision trees and logical theories. Finally, we show how this model leads to computing cheap and exact SHAP values. We validate the theory through experiments with on Graph Neural Networks.

Metaverse is an immersive shared space that remote users can access through virtual and augmented reality interfaces, enabling their avatars to interact with each other and the surrounding. Although digital objects can be manipulated, physical objects cannot be touched, grasped, or moved within the metaverse due to the lack of a suitable interface. This work proposes a solution to overcome this limitation by introducing the concept of a Physical Metaverse enabled by a new interface named "Avatarm". The Avatarm consists in an avatar enhanced with a robotic arm that performs physical manipulation tasks while remaining entirely hidden in the metaverse. The users have the illusion that the avatar is directly manipulating objects without the mediation by a robot. The Avatarm is the first step towards a new metaverse, the "Physical Metaverse", where users can physically interact each other and with the environment.

The characteristics of a hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) detector are presented here for monitoring in space solar flares and the evolution of large energetic proton events up to hundreds of MeV. The a-Si:H presents an excellent radiation hardness and finds application in harsh radiation environments for medical purposes, for particle beam characterization and in space weather science and applications. In this chapter, we will take a trip around several hot-spots where Bohmian mechanics and its capacity to describe the microscopic reality, even in the absence of measurements, can be harnessed as computational tools, in order to help in the prediction of phenomenologically accessible information (also useful for the followers of the Copenhagen theory). As a first example, we will see how a Stochastic Schr\"odinger Equation, when used to compute the reduced density matrix of a non-Markovian open quantum system, necessarily seems to employ the Bohmian concept of a conditional wavefunction. We will see that by dressing these conditional wavefunctions with an interpretation, the Bohmian theory can prove to be a useful tool to build general quantum frameworks, like a high-frequency electron transport model. As a second example, we will introduce how a Copenhagen "observable operator" can be derived from numerical properties of the Bohmian trajectories, which within Bohmian mechanics, are well-defined even for an "unmeasured" system. Most importantly in practice, even if these numbers are given no ontological meaning, not only we will be able to simulate (thus, predict and talk about) them, but we will see that they can be operationally determined in a weak value experiment. The ALICE ITS3 (Inner Tracking System 3) upgrade project and the CERN EP R&D on monolithic pixel sensors are investigating the feasibility of the Tower Partners Semiconductor Co. 65 nm process for use in the next generation of vertex detectors. The ITS3 aims to employ wafer-scale Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors thinned down to 20 to 40 um and bent to form truly cylindrical half barrels. Among the first critical steps towards the realisation of this detector is to validate the sensor technology through extensive characterisation both in the laboratory and with in-beam measurements. The Digital Pixel Test Structure (DPTS) is one of the prototypes produced in the first sensor submission in this technology and has undergone a systematic measurement campaign whose details are presented in this article. The results confirm the goals of detection efficiency and non-ionising and ionising radiation hardness up to the expected levels for ALICE ITS3 and also demonstrate operation at +20 C and a detection efficiency of 99% for a DPTS irradiated with a dose of $10^{15}$ 1 MeV n$_{\mathrm{eq}}/$cm$^2$. We define the bicategory of Graph Convolutional Neural Networks $\mathbf{GCNN}_n$ for an arbitrary graph with $n$ nodes. We show it can be factored through the already existing categorical constructions for deep learning called $\mathbf{Para}$ and $\mathbf{Lens}$ with the base category set to the CoKleisli category of the product comonad. We prove that there exists an injective-on-objects, faithful 2-functor $\mathbf{GCNN}_n \to \mathbf{Para}(\mathsf{CoKl}(\mathbb{R}^{n \times n} \times -))$. We show that this construction allows us to treat the adjacency matrix of a GCNN as a global parameter instead of a a local, layer-wise one. This gives us a high-level categorical characterisation of a particular kind of inductive bias GCNNs possess. Lastly, we hypothesize about possible generalisations of GCNNs to general message-passing graph neural networks, connections to equivariant learning, and the (lack of) functoriality of activation functions., Comment: 21 pages

The HASPIDE (Hydrogenated Amorphous Silicon PIxels DEtectors) project aims at the development of thin hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) detectors on flexible substrates (mostly Polyimide) for beam monitoring, neutron detection and space applications. Since a-Si:H is a material with superior radiation hardness, the benefit for the above-mentioned applications can be appreciated mostly in radiation harsh environments. Furthermore, the possibility to deposit this material on flexible substrates like Polyimide (PI), polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) or polyethylene terephthalate (PET) facilitates the usage of these detectors in medical dosimetry, beam flux and beam profile measurements. Particularly interesting is its use when positioned directly on the flange of the vacuum-to-air separation interface in a beam line, as well as other applications where a thin self-standing radiation flux detector is envisaged. In this paper, the HASPIDE project will be described and some preliminary results on PI and glass substrates will be reported.

Feature importance techniques have enjoyed widespread attention in the explainable AI literature as a means of determining how trained machine learning models make their predictions. We consider Shapley value based approaches to feature importance, applied in the context of time series data. We present closed form solutions for the SHAP values of a number of time series models, including VARMAX. We also show how KernelSHAP can be applied to time series tasks, and how the feature importances that come from this technique can be combined to perform "event detection". The space environment encountered by operating spacecraft is populated by a continuous flux of charged particles that penetrate into electronic devices inducing phantom commands and loss of control, eventually leading to satellite failure. Moreover, electron static discharge that results from secondary electron emission of the device materials can also be responsible for satellite malfunction. In this regard, the estimate of the total electron yield is fundamental for our understanding of the test-mass charging associated with galactic cosmic rays in the LISA Pathfinder mission and in the forthcoming gravitational wave observatory LISA. To unveil the role of low energy electrons in this process owing to galactic and solar energetic particle events, in this work we study the interaction of keV and sub-keV electrons with a gold slab using a mixed Monte Carlo and ab-initio framework. We determine the energy spectrum of the electrons emerging from such a gold slab hit by a primary electron beam by considering the relevant energy loss mechanisms as well as the elastic scattering events. We also show that our results are consistent with experimental data and Monte Carlo simulations carried out with the GEANT4-DNA toolkit.

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) of the European Space Agency (ESA) will be the first low-frequency gravitational-wave observatory orbiting the Sun at 1 AU. The LISA Pathfinder (LPF) mission, aiming at testing of the instruments to be located on board the LISA spacecraft (S/C), hosted, among the others, fluxgate magnetometers and a particle detector as parts of a diagnostics subsystem. These instruments allowed us for the estimate of the magnetic and Coulomb spurious forces acting on the test masses that constitute the mirrors of the interferometer. With these instruments we also had the possibility to study the galactic cosmic-ray short term-term variations as a function of the particle energy and the associated interplanetary disturbances. Platform magnetometers and particle detectors will be also placed on board each LISA S/C. This work reports about an empirical method that allowed us to disentangle the interplanetary and onboard-generated components of the magnetic field by using the LPF magnetometer measurements. Moreover, we estimate the number and fluence of solar energetic particle events expected to be observed with the ESA Next Generation Radiation Monitor during the mission lifetime. An additional cosmic-ray detector, similar to that designed for LPF, in combination with magnetometers, would permit to observe the evolution of recurrent and non-recurrent galactic cosmic-ray variations and associated increases of the interplanetary magnetic field at the transit of high-speed solar wind streams and interplanetary counterparts of coronal mass ejections. In this paper, we study the notion of mending, i.e. given a partial solution to a graph problem, we investigate how much effort is needed to turn it into a proper solution. For example, if we have a partial coloring of a graph, how hard is it to turn it into a proper coloring? In prior work (SIROCCO 2022), this question was formalized and studied from the perspective of mending radius: if there is a hole that we need to patch, how far do we need to modify the solution? In this work, we investigate a complementary notion of mending volume: how many nodes need to be modified to patch a hole? We focus on the case of locally checkable labeling problems (LCLs) in trees, and show that already in this setting there are two infinite hierarchies of problems: for infinitely many values $0 < \alpha \le 1$, there is an LCL problem with mending volume $\Theta(n^\alpha)$, and for infinitely many values $k \ge 1$, there is an LCL problem with mending volume $\Theta(\log^k n)$. Hence the mendability of LCL problems on trees is a much more fine-grained question than what one would expect based on the mending radius alone. We define three variants of the theme: (1) existential mending volume, i.e., how many nodes need to be modified, (2) expected mending volume, i.e., how many nodes we need to explore to find a patch if we use randomness, and (3) deterministic mending volume, i.e., how many nodes we need to explore if we use a deterministic algorithm. We show that all three notions are distinct from each other, and we analyze the landscape of the complexities of LCL problems for the respective models.

Cubic gold-platinum free-falling test masses (TMs) constitute the mirrors of future LISA and LISA-like interferometers for low-frequency gravitational wave detection in space. High-energy particles of Galactic and solar origin charge the TMs and thus induce spurious electrostatic and magnetic forces that limit the sensitivity of these interferometers. Prelaunch Monte Carlo simulations of the TM charging were carried out for the LISA Pathfinder (LPF) mission, that was planned to test the LISA instrumentation. Measurements and simulations were compared during the mission operations. The measured net TM charging agreed with simulation estimates, while the charging noise was three to four times higher. We aim to bridge the gap between LPF TM charging noise simulations and observations. New Monte Carlo simulations of the LPF TM charging due to both Galactic and solar particles were carried out with the FLUKA/LEI toolkit. This allowed propagating low-energy electrons down to a few electronvolt. These improved FLUKA/LEI simulations agree with observations gathered during the mission operations within statistical and Monte Carlo errors. The charging noise induced by Galactic cosmic rays is about one thousand charges per second. This value increases to tens of thousands charges per second during solar energetic particle events. We develop in this work a simple qualitative quantum electron transport model, in the strong light-matter coupling regime under dipole approximation, able to capture polaritonic signatures in the time-dependent electrical current. The effect of the quantized electromagnetic field in the displacement current of a resonant tunneling diode inside an optical cavity is analyzed. The original peaks of the bare electron transmission coefficient split into two new peaks due to the resonant electron-photon interaction, leading to coherent Rabi oscillations among the polaritonic states that are developed in the system in the strong coupling regime. This mimics known effects predicted by a Jaynes-Cummings model in closed systems, and shows how a full quantum treatment of electrons and electromagnetic fields may open interesting paths for engineering new THz electron devices. The computational burden involved in the multi-time measurements of THz currents is tackled by invoking a Bohmian description of the light-matter interaction. We also show that the traditional static transmission coefficient used to characterize DC quantum electron devices has to be substituted by a new displacement current coefficient in high-frequency AC scenarios., Comment: 26 pages, 8 figures

Without access to the full quantum state, modeling quantum transport in mesoscopic systems requires dealing with a limited number of degrees of freedom. In this work, we analyze the possibility of modeling the perturbation induced by the non-simulated degrees of freedom on the simulated ones as a transition between single-particle pure states. First, we show that Bohmian conditional wave functions (BCWF) allow a rigorous discussion of the dynamics of electrons inside open quantum systems in terms of such single-particle pure states, either under Markovian or non-Markovian conditions. Second, we discuss the practical application of the method for modeling light-matter interaction phenomena in a resonant tunneling device (RTD), where a single photon is interacting with a single electron. Third, we emphasize the importance of interpreting such scattering mechanism as a transition between initial and final single-particle BCWF with well-defined energies (rather than with well-defined momenta).

Deep-learning (DL) algorithms are becoming the standard for processing ultrasound (US) fetal images. Despite a large number of survey papers already present in this field, most of them are focusing on a broader area of medical-image analysis or not covering all fetal US DL applications. This paper surveys the most recent work in the field, with a total of 145 research papers published after 2017. Each paper is analyzed and commented on from both the methodology and application perspective. We categorized the papers in (i) fetal standard-plane detection, (ii) anatomical-structure analysis, and (iii) biometry parameter estimation. For each category, main limitations and open issues are presented. Summary tables are included to facilitate the comparison among the different approaches. Publicly-available datasets and performance metrics commonly used to assess algorithm performance are summarized, too. This paper ends with a critical summary of the current state of the art on DL algorithms for fetal US image analysis and a discussion on current challenges that have to be tackled by researchers working in the field to translate the research methodology into the actual clinical practice.

Missing values in covariates due to censoring by signal interference or lack of sensitivity in the measuring devices are common in industrial problems. We propose a full Bayesian solution to the prediction problem with an efficient Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm that updates all the censored covariate values jointly in a random scan Gibbs sampler. We show that the joint updating of missing covariate values can be at least two orders of magnitude more efficient than univariate updating. This increased efficiency is shown to be crucial for quickly learning the missing covariate values and their uncertainty in a real-time decision making context, in particular when there is substantial correlation in the posterior for the missing values. The approach is evaluated on simulated data and on data from the telecom sector. Our results show that the proposed Bayesian imputation gives substantially more accurate predictions than na\"ive imputation, and that the use of auxiliary variables in the imputation gives additional predictive power.

To avoid the computational burden of many-body quantum simulation, the interaction of an electron with a photon (phonon) is typically accounted for by disregarding the explicit simulation of the photon (phonon) degree of freedom and just modelling its effect on the electron dynamics. For quantum models developed from the (reduced) density matrix or its Wigner-Weyl transformation, the modelling of collisions may violate complete positivity (precluding the typical probabilistic interpretation). In this paper, we show that such quantum transport models can also strongly violate the energy conservation in the electron-photon (electron-phonon) interactions. After comparing collisions models to exact results for an electron interacting with a photon, we conclude that there is no fundamental restriction that prevents a collision model developed within the (reduced) density matrix or Wigner formalisms to satisfy simultaneously complete positivity and energy conservation. However, at the practical level, the development of such satisfactory collision model seems very complicated. Collision models with an explicit knowledge of the microscopic state ascribed to each electron seems recommendable, since they allow to model collisions of each electron individually in a controlled way satisfying both conditions.

Surfing on the internet boom, the digital marketing industry has seen an exponential growth in the recent years and is often at the origin of the financial success of the biggest tech firms. In this paper we study the current landscape of this industry and comment on the monopoly that Google has managed to gain over the years through technical innovations and intelligent acquisitions. We then propose potential avenues to explore in an effort to help moving the digital marketing industry towards a fairer model.

We propose local prediction pools as a method for combining the predictive distributions of a set of experts conditional on a set of variables believed to be related to the predictive accuracy of the experts. This is done in a two step process where we first estimate the conditional predictive accuracy of each expert given a vector of covariates$\unicode{x2014}$or pooling variables$\unicode{x2014}$and then combine the predictive distributions of the experts conditional on this local predictive accuracy. To estimate the local predictive accuracy of each expert, we introduce the simple, fast, and interpretable caliper method. Expert pooling weights from the local prediction pool approaches the equal weight solution whenever there is little data on local predictive performance, making the pools robust and adaptive. We also propose a local version of the widely used optimal prediction pools. Local prediction pools are shown to outperform the widely used optimal linear pools in a macroeconomic forecasting evaluation, and in predicting daily bike usage for a bike rental company., Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables
