A weakly nonlinear study is numerically conducted to determine the behaviour near the onset of convection in rotating spherical shells. The mathematical and numerical procedure is described in generality, with the results presented for an Earth-like radius ratio. Through the weakly nonlinear analysis a Stuart--Landau equation is obtained for the amplitude of the convective instability, valid in the vicinity of its onset. Using this amplitude equation we derive a reduced order model for the saturation of the instability via nonlinear effects and can completely describe the resultant limit cycle without the need to solve initial value problems. In particular the weakly nonlinear analysis is able to determine whether convection onsets as a supercritical or subcritical Hopf bifurcation through solving only linear 2D problems, specifically one eigenvalue and two linear boundary value problems. Using this, we efficiently determine that convection can onset subcritically in a spherical shell for a range of Prandtl numbers if the shell is heated internally, confirming previous predictions. Furthermore, by examining the weakly nonlinear coefficients we show that it is the strong zonal flow created through Reynolds and thermal stresses that determines whether convection is supercritical or subcritical., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures

Planets and stars are able to generate coherent large-scale magnetic fields by helical convective motions in their interiors. This process, known as hydromagnetic dynamo, involves nonlinear interaction between the flow and magnetic field. Nonlinearity facilitates existence of bi-stable dynamo branches: a weak field branch where the magnetic field is not strong enough to enter into the leading order force balance in the momentum equation at large flow scales, and a strong field branch where the field enters into this balance. The transition between the two with enhancement of convection can be either subcritical or supercritical, depending on the strength of magnetic induction. In both cases, it is accompanied by topological changes in velocity field across the system; however, it is yet unclear how these changes are produced. In this work, we analyse transitions between the weak and strong dynamo regimes using a data-driven approach, separating different physical effects induced by dynamically active flow scales. Using Dynamic Mode Decomposition, we decompose the dynamo data from direct numerical simulations into different components (modes), identify the ones relevant for transition, and estimate relative magnitudes of their contributions Lorentz force and induction term. Our results suggest that subcritical transition to a strong dynamo is facilitated by a subharmonic instability, allowing for a more efficient mode of convection, and provide a modal basis for reduced-order models of this transition.

We discuss the applicability of quasilinear-type approximations for a turbulent system with a large range of spatial and temporal scales. We consider a paradigm fluid system of rotating convection with a vertical and horizontal temperature gradients. In particular, the interaction of rotating with the horizontal temperature gradient drives a ``thermal wind'' shear flow whose strength is controlled by a horizontal temperature gradient. Varying the parameters systematically alters the ordering of the shearing timescale, the convective timescale, and the correlation timescale. We demonstrate that quasilinear-type approximations work well when the shearing timescale or the correlation timescale is sufficiently short. In all cases, the Generalised Quasilinear approximation (GQL) systematically outperforms the Quasilinear approximation (QL). We discuss the consequences for statistical theories of turbulence interacting with mean gradients. We investigate the linear and nonlinear properties of the Goldreich-Schubert-Fricke (GSF) instability in stellar radiative zones with arbitrary local (radial and latitudinal) differential rotation. This instability may lead to turbulence that contributes to redistribution of angular momentum and chemical composition in stars. In our local Boussinesq model, we investigate varying the orientation of the shear with respect to the 'effective gravity', which we describe using the angle $\phi$. We first perform an axisymmetric linear analysis to explore the effects of varying $\phi$ on the local stability of arbitrary differential rotations. We then explore the nonlinear hydrodynamical evolution in three dimensions using a modified shearing box. The model exhibits both the diffusive GSF instability, and a non-diffusive instability that occurs when the Solberg-H\{o}iland criteria are violated. We observe the nonlinear development of strong zonal jets ("layering" in the angular momentum) with a preferred orientation in both cases, which can considerably enhance turbulent transport. By varying $\phi$ we find the instability with mixed radial and latitudinal shears transports angular momentum more efficiently (particularly if adiabatically unstable) than cases with purely radial shear $(\phi = 0)$. By exploring the dependence on box size, we find the transport properties of the GSF instability to be largely insensitive to this, implying we can meaningfully extrapolate our results to stars. However, there is no preferred length-scale for adiabatic instability, which therefore exhibits strong box-size dependence. Jupiter's weather layer exhibits long-term and quasi-periodic cycles of meteorological activity that can completely change the appearance of its belts and zones. There are cycles with intervals from 4 to 9 years, dependent on the latitude, which were detected in 5$\mu$m radiation, which provides a window into the cloud-forming regions of the troposphere; however, the origin of these cycles has been a mystery. Here we propose that magnetic torsional oscillations/waves arising from the dynamo region could modulate the heat transport and hence be ultimately responsible for the variability of the tropospheric banding. These axisymmetric waves are magnetohydrodynamic waves influenced by the rapid rotation, which have been detected in Earth's core, and have been recently suggested to exist in Jupiter by the observation of magnetic secular variations by Juno. Using the magnetic field model JRM33, together with the density distribution model, we compute the expected speed of these waves. For the waves excited by variations in the zonal jet flows, their wavelength can be estimated from the width of the alternating jets, yielding waves with a half period of 3.2-4.7 years in 14-23$^\circ$N, consistent with the intervals with the cycles of variability of Jupiter's North Equatorial Belt and North Temperate Belt identified in the visible and infrared observations. The nature of these waves, including the wave speed and the wavelength, is revealed by a data-driven technique, dynamic mode decomposition, applied to the spatio-temporal data for 5$\mu$m emission. Our results imply that exploration of these magnetohydrodynamic waves may provide a new window to the origins of quasi-periodic patterns in Jupiter's tropospheric clouds and to the internal dynamics and the dynamo of Jupiter.

Direct statistical simulation (DSS) of nonlinear dynamical systems bypasses the traditional route of accumulating statistics by lengthy direct numerical simulations (DNS) by solving the equations that govern the statistics themselves. DSS suffers, however, from the curse of dimensionality as the statistics (such as correlations) generally have higher dimension than the underlying dynamical variables. Here we investigate two approaches to reduce the dimensionality of DSS, illustrating each method with numerical experiments with the Lorenz-96 dynamical system. The forms of DSS chosen here involve approximate closures at second and third order in the equal time cumulants. We demonstrate significant reduction in computational effort that can be achieved without sacrificing the accuracy of DSS. Taylor-Couette flow is often used as a simplified model for complex rotating flows in the interior of stars and accretion disks. The flow dynamics in these objects is influenced by magnetic fields. For example, quasi-Keplerian flows in Taylor-Couette geometry become unstable to a travelling or standing wave in an external magnetic field if the fluid is conducting; there is an instability even when the flow is hydrodynamically stable. This magnetorotational instability leads to the development of chaotic states and, eventually, turbulence, when the cylinder rotation is sufficiently fast. The transition to turbulence in this flow can be complex, with the coexistence of parameter regions with spatio-temporal chaos and regions with quasi-periodic behaviour, involving one or two additional modulating frequencies. Although the unstable modes of a periodic flow can be identified with Floquet analysis, here we adopt a more flexible equation-free data-driven approach. We analyse the data from the transition to chaos in the magnetized Taylor-Couette flow and identify the flow structures related to the modulating frequencies with Dynamic Mode Decomposition; this method is based on approximating nonlinear dynamics with a linear infinite-dimensional Koopman operator. With the use of these structures, one can construct a nonlinear reduced model for the transition.

In strongly compressible magnetohydrodynamic turbulence, obliqueness between the large-scale density gradient and magnetic field gives an electromotive force mediated by density variance (intensity of density fluctuation). This effect is named ``magnetoclinicity'', and is expected to play an important role in large-scale magnetic-field generation in astrophysical compressible turbulent flows. Neural networks have proven to be remarkably successful for a wide range of complicated tasks, from image recognition and object detection to speech recognition and machine translation. One of their successes is the skill in prediction of future dynamics given a suitable training set of data. Previous studies have shown how Echo State Networks (ESNs), a subset of Recurrent Neural Networks, can successfully predict even chaotic systems for times longer than the Lyapunov time. This study shows that, remarkably, ESNs can successfully predict dynamical behavior that is qualitatively different from any behavior contained in the training set. Evidence is provided for a fluid dynamics problem where the flow can transition between laminar (ordered) and turbulent (disordered) regimes. Despite being trained on the turbulent regime only, ESNs are found to predict laminar behavior. Moreover, the statistics of turbulent-to-laminar and laminar-to-turbulent transitions are also predicted successfully, and the utility of ESNs in acting as an early-warning system for transition is discussed. These results are expected to be widely applicable to data-driven modelling of temporal behaviour in a range of physical, climate, biological, ecological and finance models characterized by the presence of tipping points and sudden transitions between several competing states., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We use direct statistical simulation (DSS) to find the low-order statistics of the well-known dynamical system, the Lorenz63 model. Instead of accumulating statistics from numerical simulation of the dynamical systems, we solve the equations of motion for the statistics themselves after closing them by making several different choices for the truncation. Fixed points of the statistics are obtained either by time evolving, or by iterative methods. The theory of turbulent transport of parallel momentum and ion heat by the interaction of stochastic magnetic fields and turbulence is presented. Attention is focused on determining the kinetic stress and the compressive energy flux. A critical parameter is identified as the ratio of the turbulent scattering rate to the rate of parallel acoustic dispersion. For the parameter large, the kinetic stress takes the form of a viscous stress. For the parameter small, the quasilinear residual stress is recovered. In practice, the viscous stress is the relevant form, and the quasilinear limit is not observable. This is the principal prediction of this paper. The nonlinear robustness of laminar plane Couette flow is considered under the action of in-phase spanwise wall oscillations by computing properties of the edge of chaos, i.e., the boundary of its basin of attraction. Three measures are used to quantify the chosen control strategy on laminar-to-turbulent transition: the kinetic energy of edge states (local attractors on the edge of chaos), the form of the minimal seed (least energetic perturbation on the edge of chaos), and the laminarization probability (the probability that a random perturbation from the laminar flow of given kinetic energy will laminarize). A novel Bayesian approach is introduced to enable the accurate computation of the laminarization probability at a fraction of the cost of previous methods. While the edge state and the minimal seed provide useful information about the dynamics of transition to turbulence, neither measure is particularly useful to judge the effectiveness of the control strategy since they are not representative of the global geometry of the edge. In contrast, the laminarization probability provides global information about the edge and can be used to evaluate the control effectiveness by computing a laminarization score (the expected laminarization probability) and the associated expected dissipation rate of the controlled flow. These two quantities allow for the determination of optimal control parameter values subject to desired constraints. In this paper we investigate the effectiveness of direct statistical simulation (DSS) for two low-order models of dynamo action. The first model, which is a simple model of solar and stellar dynamo action, is third-order and has cubic nonlinearities whilst the second has only quadratic nonlinearities and describes the interaction of convection and an aperiodically reversing magnetic field. We show how DSS can be utilised to solve for the statistics of these systems of equations both in the presence and the absence of stochastic terms, by truncating the cumulant hierarchy at either second or third order. We compare two different techniques for solving for the statistics, timestepping -- which is able to locate only stable solutions of the equations for the statistics and direct detection of the fixed points. We develop a complete methodology and symbolic package in Python for deriving the statistical equations governing the Low-order dynamic systems in cumulant expansions. We demonstrate that although direct detection of the fixed points is efficient and accurate for DSS truncated at second order, the addition of higher order terms leads to the inclusion of many unstable fixed points that may be found by direct detection of the fixed point by iterative methods. In those cases timestepping is a more robust protocol for finding meaninful solutions to DSS.

Tangled magnetic fields, often coexisting with an ordered mean field, have a major impact on turbulence and momentum transport in many plasmas, including those found in the solar tachocline and magnetic confinement devices. We present a novel mean field theory of potential vorticity mixing in $\beta$-plane magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) and drift wave turbulence. Our results show that mean-square stochastic fields strongly reduce Reynolds stress coherence. This decoherence of potential vorticity flux due to stochastic field scattering leads to suppression of momentum transport and zonal flow formation. A simple calculation suggests that the breaking of the shear-eddy tilting feedback loop by stochastic fields is the key underlying physics mechanism. A dimensionless parameter that quantifies the increment in power threshold is identified and used to assess the impact of stochastic field on the L-H transition. Dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) is utilised to identify the intrinsic signals arising from planetary interiors. Focusing on an axisymmetric quasi-geostrophic magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) wave -called torsional Alfv\'{e}n waves (TW) - we examine the utility of DMD in two types of MHD direct numerical simulations: Boussinesq magnetoconvection and anelastic convection-driven dynamos in rapidly rotating spherical shells, which model the dynamics in Earth's core and in Jupiter, respectively. We demonstrate that DMD is capable of distinguishing internal modes and boundary/interface-related modes from the timeseries of the internal velocity. Those internal modes may be realised as free TW, in terms of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of their normal mode solutions. This paper presents two techniques for characterisation of cloud-feeding coherent boundary layer structures through analysis of large-eddy simulations of shallow cumulus clouds, contrasting conditions with and without ambient shear. The first technique is a generalisation of the two-point correlation function where the correlation length-scale as well as orientation can be extracted. The second technique decomposes the vertical transport by coherent structures by the shape, size and orientation of these structures. It is found that the structures dominating the vertical flux are plume-like in character (extending from the surface into cloud), show small width/thickness asymmetry and rise near-vertically in the absence of ambient wind. The planar stretching and tilting of boundary layer structures caused by the introduction of ambient shear is also quantified, demonstrating the general applicability of the techniques for future study of other boundary layer patterns., Comment: 26 pages, 14 figures, submitted to QJRMS

We continue our investigation into the nonlinear evolution of the Goldreich-Schubert-Fricke (GSF) instability in differentially rotating radiation zones. This instability may be a key player in transporting angular momentum in stars and giant planets, but its nonlinear evolution remains mostly unexplored. In a previous paper we considered the equatorial instability, whereas here we simulate the instability at a general latitude for the first time. We adopt a local Cartesian Boussinesq model in a modified shearing box for most of our simulations, but we also perform some simulations with stress-free, impenetrable, radial boundaries. We first revisit the linear instability and derive some new results, before studying its nonlinear evolution. The instability is found to behave very differently compared with its behaviour at the equator. In particular, here we observe the development of strong zonal jets ("layering" in the angular momentum), which can considerably enhance angular momentum transport, particularly in axisymmetric simulations. The jets are, in general, tilted with respect to the local gravity by an angle that corresponds initially with that of the linear modes, but which evolves with time and depends on the strength of the flow. The instability transports angular momentum much more efficiently (by several orders of magnitude) than it does at the equator, and we estimate that the GSF instability could contribute to the missing angular momentum transport required in both red giant and subgiant stars. We consider the effect of stratification on systematic, large-scale flows generated in anelastic convection. We present results from three-dimensional numerical simulations of convection in a rotating plane layer in which the angle between the axis of rotation and gravity is allowed to vary. This model is representative of different latitudes of a spherical body. We consider two distinct parameter regimes: (i) weakly rotating and (ii) rapidly rotating. In each case, we examine the effect of stratification on the flow structure and heat transport properties focussing on the difference between Boussinesq and anelastic convection. Furthermore, we show that regimes (i) and (ii) generate very different large-scale flows and we investigate the role stratification has in modifying these flows. The stratified flows possess a net helicity not present in the Boussinesq cases which we suggest, when combined with the self-generated shear flows, could be important for dynamo action., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures. Nontrivial topology in bulk matter has been linked with the existence of topologically protected interfacial states. We show that a gaseous plasmon polariton (GPP), an electromagnetic surface wave existing at the boundary of magnetized plasma and vacuum, has a topological origin that arises from the nontrivial topology of magnetized plasma. Because a gaseous plasma cannot sustain a sharp interface with discontinuous density, one must consider a gradual density falloff with scale length comparable or longer than the wavelength of the wave. We show that the GPP may be found within a gapped spectrum in present-day laboratory devices, suggesting that platforms are currently available for experimental investigation of topological wave physics in plasmas., Comment: Supplementary Material is included

Classification of matter through topological phases and topological edge states between distinct materials has been a subject of great interest recently. While lattices have been the main setting for these studies, a relatively unexplored realm for this physics is that of continuum fluids. In the typical case of a fluid model with a point spectrum, nontrivial topology and associated edge modes have been observed previously. However, another possibility is that a continuous spectrum can coexist with the point spectrum. Here we demonstrate that a fluid plasma model can harbor nontrivial topology within its continuous spectrum, and that there are boundary modes at the interface between topologically distinct regions. We consider the ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) model. In the presence of magnetic shear, we find nontrivial topology in the Alfv\'{e}n continuum. For strong shear, the Chern number is $\pm 1$, depending on the sign of the shear. If the magnetic shear changes sign within the plasma, a topological phase transition occurs, and bulk-boundary correspondence then suggests a mode localized to the layer of zero magnetic shear. We confirm the existence of this mode numerically. Moreover, this reversed-shear Alfv\'{e}n eigenmode (RSAE) is well known within magnetic fusion as it has been observed in several tokamaks. In examining how the MHD model might be regularized at small scales, we also consider the electron limit of Hall MHD. We show that the whistler band, which plays an important role in planetary ionospheres, has nontrivial topology. More broadly, this work raises the possibility that fusion devices could be carefully tailored to produce other topological states with potentially useful behavior., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures

Transition to turbulence dramatically alters the properties of fluid flows. In most canonical shear flows, the laminar flow is linearly stable and a finite-amplitude perturbation is necessary to trigger transition. Controlling transition to turbulence is achieved via the broadening or narrowing of the basin of attraction of the laminar flow. In this paper, a novel methodology to assess the robustness of the laminar flow and the efficiency of control strategies is introduced. It relies on the statistical sampling of the phase space neighborhood around the laminar flow in order to assess the transition probability of perturbations as a function of their energy. This approach is applied to a canonical flow (plane Couette flow) and provides invaluable insight: in the presence of the chosen control, transition is significantly suppressed whereas plausible scalar indicators of the nonlinear stability of the flow, such as the edge state energy, do not provide conclusive predictions. The methodology presented here in the context of transition to turbulence is applicable to any nonlinear system displaying finite-amplitude instability.

Numerical simulations of quasi-static magnetoconvection with a vertical magnetic field are carried out up to a Chandrasekhar number of $Q=10^8$ over a broad range of Rayleigh numbers $Ra$. Three magnetoconvection regimes are identified: two of the regimes are magnetically-constrained in the sense that a leading-order balance exists between the Lorentz and buoyancy forces, whereas the third regime is characterized by unbalanced dynamics that is similar to non-magnetic convection. Each regime is distinguished by flow morphology, momentum and heat equation balances, and heat transport behavior. One of the magnetically-constrained regimes appears to represent an `ultimate' magnetoconvection regime in the dual limit of asymptotically-large buoyancy forcing and magnetic field strength; this regime is characterized by an interconnected network of anisotropic, spatially-localized fluid columns aligned with the direction of the imposed magnetic field that remain quasi-laminar despite having large flow speeds. As for non-magnetic convection, heat transport is controlled primarily by the thermal boundary layer. Empirically, the scaling of the heat transport and flow speeds with $Ra$ appear to be independent of the thermal Prandtl number within the magnetically-constrained, high-$Q$ regimes., Comment: 24 pages, 11 figures

We present an investigation into the nonlinear evolution of the Goldreich-Schubert-Fricke (GSF) instability using axisymmetric and three-dimensional simulations near the equator of a differentially rotating radiation zone. This instability may provide an important contribution to angular momentum transport in stars and planets. We adopt a local Boussinesq Cartesian shearing box model, which represents a small patch of a differentially rotating stellar radiation zone. Complementary simulations are also performed with stress-free, impenetrable boundaries in the local radial direction. The linear and nonlinear evolution of the equatorial axisymmetric instability is formally equivalent to the salt fingering instability. This is no longer the case in 3D, but we find that the instability behaves nonlinearly in a similar way to salt fingering. Axisymmetric simulations -- and those in 3D with short dimensions along the local azimuthal direction -- quickly develop strong jets along the rotation axis, which inhibit the instability and lead to predator-prey-like temporal dynamics. In 3D, the instability initially produces homogeneous turbulence and enhanced momentum transport, though in some cases jets form on a much longer timescale. We propose and validate numerically a simple theory for nonlinear saturation of the GSF instability and its resulting angular momentum transport. This theory is straightforward to implement in stellar evolution codes incorporating rotation. The precise mechanisms responsible for the natural dynamos in the Earth and Sun are still not fully understood. Numerical simulations of natural dynamos are extremely computationally intensive, and are carried out in parameter regimes many orders of magnitude away from real conditions. Parallelization in space is a common strategy to speed up simulations on high performance computers, but eventually hits a scaling limit. Additional directions of parallelization are desirable to utilise the high number of processor cores now available. Parallel-in-time methods can deliver speed up in addition to that offered by spatial partitioning but have not yet been applied to dynamo simulations. This paper investigates the feasibility of using the parallel-in-time algorithm Parareal to speed up initial value problem simulations of the kinematic dynamo, using the open source Dedalus spectral solver. Both the time independent Roberts and time dependent Galloway-Proctor 2.5D dynamos are investigated over a range of magnetic Reynolds numbers. Speed ups beyond those possible from spatial parallelization are found in both cases. Results for the Galloway-Proctor flow are promising, with Parareal efficiency found to be close to 0.3. Roberts flow results are less efficient, but Parareal still shows some speed up over spatial parallelization alone. Parallel in space and time speed ups of $\sim300$ were found for 1600 cores for the Galloway-Proctor flow, with total parallel efficiency of $\sim0.16$.

It is widely accepted that astrophysical magnetic fields are generated by dynamo action. In many cases these fields exhibit organisation on a scale larger than that of the underlying turbulent flow (e.g., the eleven-year solar cycle). The mechanism for the generation of so-called large scale fields remains an open problem. In cases where the magnetic Reynolds number ($Rm$) is small, dynamo-generated fields are coherent but at (the astrophysically relevant) high $Rm$, the fields are overwhelmed by small scale fluctuating field. Recently Tobias and Cattaneo (2013) have shown that an imposed large scale shear flow can suppress the small scale fluctuations and allow the large scale temporal behaviour to emerge. Shear is also believed to modify the electromotive force by introducing correlations between the flow and the field. However in previous models at high $Rm$ the shear is often artificially imposed or driven by an arbitrary body force. Here we consider a simple kinematic model of a convective dynamo in which shear is self consistently driven by the presence of a horizontal temperature gradient (resulting in a thermal wind) and a rotation vector that is oblique to gravity. By considering a $2.5$-dimensional system, we are able to reach high $Rm$ so that the dynamo approaches the asymptotic regime where the growth rate becomes approximately independent of $Rm$. We find the flows studied here to be excellent small-scale dynamos, but with very little systematic behaviour evident at large $Rm$. Raylaigh-Benard convection is one of the most well-studied models in fluid mechanics. Atmospheric convection, one of the most important components of the climate system, is by comparison complicated and poorly understood. A key attribute of atmospheric convection is the buoyancy source provided by the condensation of water vapour, but the presence of radiation, compressibility, liquid water and ice further complicate the system and our understanding of it. In this paper we present an idealized model of moist convection by taking the Boussinesq limit of the ideal gas equations and adding a condensate that obeys a simplified Clausius--Clapeyron relation. The system allows moist convection to be explored at a fundamental level and reduces to the classical Rayleigh-Benard model if the latent heat of condensation is taken to be zero. The model has an exact, Rayleigh-number independent `drizzle' solution in which the diffusion of water vapour from a saturated lower surface is balanced by condensation, with the temperature field (and so the saturation value of the moisture) determined self-consistently by the heat released in the condensation. This state is the moist analogue of the conductive solution in the classical problem. We numerically determine the linear stability properties of this solution as a function of Rayleigh number and a nondimensional latent-heat parameter. Unsteady spatially localized states such as puffs, slugs or spots play an important role in transition to turbulence. In plane Couette flow, steady versions of these states are found on two intertwined solution branches describing homoclinic snaking (Schneider $\textit{et al.}$ 2010a). These branches can be used to generate a number of spatially localized initial conditions whose transition can be investigated. From the low Reynolds numbers where homoclinic snaking is first observed ($Re < 175$) to transitional ones ($Re \approx 325$), these spatially localized states traverse various regimes where their relaminarisation time and dynamics are affected by the dynamical structure of phase space. These regimes are reported and characterised in this paper for a $4\pi$ periodic domain in the streamwise direction as a function of the two remaining variables: the Reynolds number and the width of the localized pattern. Close to the snaking, localized states are attracted by spatially localized periodic orbits before relaminarising. At larger values of the Reynolds number, the flow enters a chaotic transient of variable duration before relaminarising. Very long chaotic transients ($t > 10^4$) can be observed without difficulty for relatively low values of the Reynolds number ($Re \approx 250$).

Compositional convection is thought to be an important energy source for magnetic field generation within planetary interiors. The Prandtl number, $Pr$, characterizing compositional convection is significantly larger than unity, suggesting that the inertial force may not be important on the small scales of convection as long as the buoyancy force is not too strong. We develop asymptotic dynamo models for the case of small Rossby number and large Prandtl number in which inertia is absent on the convective scale. The relevant diffusivity parameter for this limit is the compositional Roberts number, $q = D/\eta$, which is the ratio of compositional and magnetic diffusivities. Dynamo models are developed for both order one $q$ and the more geophysically relevant low $q$ limit. For both cases the ratio of magnetic to kinetic energy densities, $M$, is asymptotically large and reflects the fact that Alfv\'en waves have been filtered from the dynamics. Along with previous investigations of asymptotic dynamo models for $Pr=O(1)$, our results show that the ratio $M$ is not a useful indicator of dominant force balances in the momentum equation since many different asymptotic limits of $M$ can be obtained without changing the leading order geostrophic balance. Most large-scale planetary magnetic fields are thought to be driven by low Rossby number convection of a low magnetic Prandtl number fluid. Here kinematic dynamo action is investigated with an asymptotic, rapidly rotating dynamo model for the plane layer geometry that is intrinsically low magnetic Prandtl number. The thermal Prandtl number and Rayleigh number are varied to illustrate fundamental changes in flow regime, ranging from laminar cellular convection to geostrophic turbulence in which an inverse energy cascade is present. A decrease in the efficiency of the convection to generate a dynamo, as determined by an increase in the critical magnetic Reynolds number, is observed as the buoyancy forcing is increased. This decreased efficiency may result from both the loss of correlations associated with the increasingly disordered states of flow that are generated, and boundary layer behavior that enhances magnetic diffusion locally. We find that the spatial characteristics of $\alpha$, and thus the large-scale magnetic field, is dependent only weakly on changes in flow behavior. However, our results are limited to the linear, kinematic dynamo regime, and future simulations including the Lorentz force are therefore necessary to assess the robustness of this result. We consider dynamo action driven by three-dimensional rotating anelastic convection in a spherical shell. Motivated by the behaviour of the solar dynamo, we examine the interaction of hydromagnetic modes with different symmetries and demonstrate how complicated interactions between convection, differential rotation and magnetic fields may lead to modulation of the basic cycle. For some parameters, Type 1 modulation occurs by the transfer of energy between modes of different symmetries with little change in the overall amplitude, for other parameters, the modulation is of Type 2, where the amplitude is significantly affected (leading to grand minima in activity) without significant changes in symmetry. Most importantly, we identify the presence of "supermodulation" in the solutions, where the activity switches chaotically between Type 1 and Type 2 modulation, this is believed to be an important process in solar activity., Comment: 12 pages

We investigate the processes that lead to the generation of mean flows in two-dimensional anelastic convection. The simple model consists of a plane layer that is rotating about an axis inclined to gravity. The results are two-fold: firstly we numerically investigate the onset of convection in three-dimensions, paying particular attention to the role of stratification and highlight a curious symmetry. Secondly, we investigate the mechanisms that drive both zonal and meridional flows in two dimensions. We find that, in general, non-trivial Reynolds stresses can lead to systematic flows and, using statistical measures, we quantify the role of stratification in modifying the coherence of these flows., Comment: 28 pages, 9 figures

The onset of dynamo action is investigated within the context of a newly developed low Rossby, low magnetic Prandtl number, convection-driven dynamo model. This multiscale model represents an asymptotically exact form of an $\alpha^2$ mean field dynamo model in which the small-scale convection is represented explicitly by finite amplitude, single mode solutions. Both steady and oscillatory convection are considered for a variety of horizontal planforms. The kinetic helicity is observed to be a monotonically increasing function of the Rayleigh number. As a result, very small magnetic Prandtl number dynamos can be found for sufficiently large Rayleigh numbers. All dynamos are found to be oscillatory with an oscillation frequency that increases as the strength of the convection is increased and the magnetic Prandtl number is reduced. Kinematic dynamo action is strongly controlled by the profile of the helicity; single mode solutions which exhibit boundary layer behavior in the helicity show a decrease in the efficiency of dynamo action due to the enhancement of magnetic diffusion in the boundary layer regions. For a given value of the Rayleigh number, lower magnetic Prandtl number dynamos are excited for the case of oscillatory convection in comparison to steady convection. A convection-driven multiscale dynamo model is developed in the limit of low Rossby number for the plane layer geometry in which the gravity and rotation vectors are aligned. The small-scale fluctuating dynamics are described by a magnetically-modified quasi-geostrophic equation set, and the large-scale mean dynamics are governed by a diagnostic thermal wind balance. The model utilizes three timescales that respectively characterize the convective timescale, the large-scale magnetic evolution timescale, and the large-scale thermal evolution timescale. Distinct equations are derived for the cases of order one and low magnetic Prandtl number. It is shown that the low magnetic Prandtl number model is characterized by a magnetic to kinetic energy ratio that is asymptotically large, with ohmic dissipation dominating viscous dissipation on the large-scales. For the order one magnetic Prandtl number model the magnetic and kinetic energies are equipartitioned and both ohmic and viscous dissipation are weak on the large-scales; large-scale ohmic dissipation occurs in thin magnetic boundary layers adjacent to the solid boundaries. For both magnetic Prandtl number cases the Elsasser number is small since the Lorentz force does not enter the leading order force balance. The new models can be considered fully nonlinear, generalized versions of the dynamo model originally developed by Childress and Soward [Phys. Rev. Lett., \textbf{29}, p.837, 1972]. We investigate the intermittency of energy dissipation in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence by identifying dissipative structures and measuring their characteristic scales. We find that the probability distribution of energy dissipation rates exhibits a power law tail with index very close to the critical value of -2.0, which indicates that structures of all intensities contribute equally to energy dissipation. We find that energy dissipation is uniformly spread among coherent structures with lengths and widths in the inertial range. At the same time, these structures have thicknesses deep within the dissipative regime. As the Reynolds number is increased, structures become thinner and more numerous, while the energy dissipation continues to occur mainly in large-scale coherent structures. This implies that in the limit of high Reynolds number, energy dissipation occurs in thin, tightly packed current sheets which nevertheless span a continuum of scales up to the system size, exhibiting features of both coherent structures and nanoflares previously conjectured as a coronal heating mechanism., Comment: To appear in The Astrophysical Journal. 12 pages, 10 figures

The predominant force balance in rapidly rotating planetary cores is between Coriolis, pressure, buoyancy and Lorentz forces. This magnetostrophic balance leads to a Taylor state where the spatially averaged azimuthal Lorentz force is compelled to vanish on cylinders aligned with the rotation axis. Any deviation from this state leads to a torsional oscillation, signatures of which have been observed in the Earth's secular variation and are thought to influence length of day variations via angular momentum conservation. In order to investigate the dynamics of torsional oscillations, we perform several three-dimensional dynamo simulations in a spherical shell. We find torsional oscillations, identified by their propagation at the correct Alfv\'{e}n speed, in many of our simulations. We find that the frequency, location and direction of propagation of the waves are influenced by the choice of parameters. Torsional waves are observed within the tangent cylinder and also have the ability to pass through it. Several of our simulations display waves with core travel times of 4 to 6 years. We calculate the driving terms for these waves and find that both the Reynolds force and ageostrophic convection acting through the Lorentz force are important in driving torsional oscillations.

We discuss the difficulties of predicting the solar cycle using mean-field models. Here we argue that these difficulties arise owing to the significant modulation of the solar activity cycle, and that this modulation arises owing to either stochastic or deterministic processes. We analyse the implications for predictability in both of these situations by considering two separate solar dynamo models. The first model represents a stochastically-perturbed flux transport dynamo. Here even very weak stochastic perturbations can give rise to significant modulation in the activity cycle. This modulation leads to a loss of predictability. In the second model, we neglect stochastic effects and assume that generation of magnetic field in the Sun can be described by a fully deterministic nonlinear mean-field model -- this is a best case scenario for prediction. We designate the output from this deterministic model (with parameters chosen to produce chaotically modulated cycles) as a target timeseries that subsequent deterministic mean-field models are required to predict. Long-term prediction is impossible even if a model that is correct in all details is utilised in the prediction. Furthermore, we show that even short-term prediction is impossible if there is a small discrepancy in the input parameters from the fiducial model. This is the case even if the predicting model has been tuned to reproduce the output of previous cycles.
