Finding and designing ferromagnets that operate above room temperature is crucial in advancing high-performance spintronic devices. The pioneering van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnet Fe$_3$GaTe$_2$ has extended the way for spintronic applications by achieving a record-high Curie temperature among its analogues. However, the physical mechanism of increasing Cuire temperature still needs to be explored. Here, we propose a practical approach to discovering high-temperature ferromagnetic materials for spintronic applications through flat band engineering. We simulate the magnetic transition directly from strongly correlated calculations, reconciling the dual nature of $d$-electrons with both localization and itinerant characters. Significantly, our systematic studies unveil the emergence of quasi-particle flat bands arising from collective many-body excitations preceding the ferromagnetic phase transition, reinforcing magnetic stability through a positive feedback mechanism. This research provides a promising pathway for exploring next-generation spintronic devices utilizing low-dimensional vdW flat band systems.

Developing a comprehensive magnetic theory of correlated itinerant magnets is a challenging task due to the difficulty in reconciling both local moments and itinerant electrons. In this work, we investigate the microscopic process of magnetic phase transition in ferromagnet metal Fe$_{3-\delta}$GeTe$_2$. A new paradigm is proposed to describe the magnetic phase transition in correlated metallic ferromagnets, where Hund's coupling dominates the spectral weight transfer between different spin channels, rather than spin-splitting as described by the Stoner model. We recognize that our theory should be universal for itinerant magnets. Additionally, we reveal an efficient way to achieve novel quantum states from various competing orders in multi-site crystal structures. Our research shows that Fe1 are proximate to Mott physics, while Fe2 exhibit Hund physics due to their distinct atomic environments. These competing orders work together to produce heavy fermion behavior within ferromagnetic long-range order through well-defined quasiparticle bands, which are promoted by Hund's coupling and further hybridized with relative itinerant bands. The complex interactions of competing orders drive correlated magnetic metal to a new frontier for discovering outstanding quantum states and exotic phenomena in condensed matter physics.

Manipulating point defects for tailored macroscopic properties remains a formidable challenge in materials science. This study demonstrates a proof-of-principle for a universal law involving element Mn, significantly enhancing vacancy diffusion through an unprecedented anomalous Friedel Oscillations phenomenon, across most metals in the periodic table. The correlation between Mn-induced point-defect dynamic changes and intrinsic macro-properties is robustly validated through the first-principles theory and well-designed experiments. The physical origin stems from Mn's exceptionally large effective intra-elemental 3d electron interactions, surpassing the Coulomb attraction induced by vacancy and disrupting the electron screening effect. Given the ubiquitous nature of vacancies and their recognition as the most crucial defects influencing nearly all physical and mechanical properties of crystalline materials, this outcome may drive advances in a broad domain.

We present a proof-of-principle demonstration of a universal law for the element Mn, which greatly enhances vacancy diffusion through an anomalous Friedel Oscillation effect in a series of Ni-based concentrated solid-solution alloys, regardless of the type of atom involved. The antiferromagnetic element Mn possesses a unique half-filled 3d electron structure, creating split virtual bound states near the Fermi energy level and producing a large local magnetic moment after vacancy formation. The resultant electron spin oscillations reduce the number of electrons involved in charge density oscillations, destroying charge screening and lowering potential interaction at the saddle point between the vacancy and diffusing atom. This ultimately facilitates vacancy diffusion by reducing energy level variations of conduction band electrons during the diffusion process. These findings offer valuable insights into atom diffusion mechanisms and open up new avenues for manipulating defect properties through unique element design, thereby enabling the creation of high-performance alloys in a broad range of fields.

Based on ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, we determined the melting curve of magnesium (Mg) up to ~460 GPa using the solid-liquid coexistence method. Between ~30 and 100 GPa, our melting curve is noticeably lower than those from static experiments, but is in good agreement with recent shock experiments. Up to ~450 GPa, our melting curve is generally consistent with the melting points from first-principles calculations using the small-cell coexistence method. We found that, at high pressures of a few hundred GPa, due to the strong softening of interatomic interactions in the liquid phase, solid-liquid coexistence simulations of Mg show some characteristics distinctively different from other metal systems, such as aluminum. For example, at a given volume, the pressure and temperature range for maintaining a stable solid-liquid coexistence state can be very small. The strong softening in the liquid phase also causes the unusual behavior of reentrant melting to occur at very high pressures. The onset of reentrant melting is predicted at ~305 GPa, close to that at ~300 GPa from the small-cell coexistence method. We show that the calculated melting points, considering reentrant melting, can be excellently fitted to a low-order Kechin equation, thereby making it possible for us to obtain a first-principles melting curve of Mg at pressures above 50 GPa for the first time. Similar characteristics in solid-liquid coexistence simulations, as well as reentrant melting, are also expected for other systems with strong softening in the liquid phase at high pressures., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures

Vacancy is known to play a critical role in solid state diffusion and determine many properties of the materials. We report a proof-of-principle result on Mn in the role of tuning vacancy diffusion by an anomalous Friedel Oscillations effect in an equivalent NiCoFeCrMn high entropy alloy. The vacancy induced Friedel Oscillations is destroyed by the presence of the first nearest neighboring Mn, opening a channel for long-range influence on the surrounding atoms from the vacancy, resulting in a lower vacancy diffusion barrier energy, despite of the atom type. The effects lead to a remarkable diffusion overlaps of the two type defects, vacancy and interstitial, enhancing their recombination, which can explain well for the experimental results with suppression of vacancy clusters under irradiation. This finding presents new understanding on the atomic diffusion mechanism and thus suggests novel concepts for tuning defect properties in the design of advanced materials with outstanding properties, in a broad field., Comment: 15 pages, including 4 figures in the manuscript, 5 figures and 1 table in the supplemental material

Solid solution is an important way to enhance the structural and functional performances of materials. In this work, we develop a structural modeling approach to solid solutions based on the similar atomic environment (SAE). We propose the similarity function associated with any type of atom cluster to describe quantitatively the configurational deviation from the desired solid solution structure that is fully disordered or contains short-range order (SRO). In this manner, the structural modeling for solid solution is transferred to a minimization problem in the configuration space. Moreover, we pay efforts to enhance the practicality and functionality of this approach. The approach and implementation are demonstrated by the cross-validations with the special quasi-random structure (SQS) method. We apply the SAE method to the typical quinary CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy, continuous binary Ta-W alloy and ternary CoCrNi medium-entropy alloy with SRO as prototypes. For the moment, there is no exact description of van der Waals (vdW) interactions. ACFD-RPA \cite{Gould1} is expected to better describe vdW bonding, but it is not exact. The PBE/DFT-D2 method is less satisfactory, however, its results are in good agreement with experimental data. Although our fitting technique may weaken (not neglect) the vdW interactions and produce interlayer potentials with weakened vdW, the obtained interlayer potentials reproduce energetics of graphite near the equilibrium interlayer distance very well, as shown in Ref. \cite{Chen}. If having inputs which fully include vdW interactions and having better fitting functions, we believe that interlayer potentials can also fully include vdW interactions in graphite system., Comment: 4 pages 1 figure
