Search

The NEO Coordination Centre (NEOCC) of the European Space Agency is an operational centre that, among other activities, computes the orbits of near-Earth objects and their probabilities of impact with the Earth. The NEOCC started providing information about near-Earth objects in 2012 on a dedicated web portal, accessible at https://neo.ssa.esa.int/. Since the beginning of the operational phase, many developments and improvements have been implemented regarding the software, the data provided, and the portal. One of the most important upgrades is that the NEOCC is now independently providing data through a newly developed Orbit Determination and Impact Monitoring system, named Aegis. All the data computed by Aegis is publicly available on the NEOCC web portal, and Aegis is also used to maintain all the major services offered. The most important services comprise an orbital catalogue of all known asteroids, a list of possible future impacts with the Earth (also called Risk List), a list of forthcoming close approaches, a set of graphical toolkits, and an on-demand ephemerides service. Many of the services are also available through dedicated APIs, which can be used to automatically retrieve data. Here we give an overview of the algorithms implemented in the Aegis software, and provide a summary of the services offered by the NEOCC that are supported by Aegis., Comment: Accepted for publication on CMDA

Pointers are a powerful, but dangerous feature provided by the C and C++ programming languages, and incorrect use of pointers is a common source of bugs and security vulnerabilities. Making secure software is crucial, as vulnerabilities exploited by malicious actors not only lead to monetary losses, but possibly loss of human lives. Fixing these vulnerabilities is costly if they are found at the end of development, and the cost will be even higher if found after deployment. That is why it is desirable to find the bugs as early in the development process as possible. We propose a framework that can statically find use-after-free bugs at compile-time and report the errors to the users. It works by tracking the lifetime of objects and memory locations pointers might point to and, using this information, a possibly invalid dereferencing of a pointer can be detected. The framework was tested on over 100 handwritten small tests, as well as 5 real-world projects, and has shown good results detecting errors, while at the same time highlighting some scenarios where false positive reports may occur. Electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft are emerging as a modern transportation solution aimed at reducing urban traffic congestion and improving the carbon footprint. The power architecture in eVTOLs is defined by the dc bus formed by the battery packs and the power converter used to drive eVTOL motors. A high dc bus voltage is preferred for the power architecture since it can reduce the weight of power cables for a given power rating. However, the impact of high dc bus voltage on the efficiency of the drivetrain power converter must be considered, since reduced efficiency leads to poor battery pack utilization. In this paper, a systematic optimization study is performed considering SiC-based inverter for the drivetrain power converter. Optimal value of dc bus voltage is determined considering the flight profile of eVTOLs. A power converter topology is proposed that can provide optimal performance and enhance the lifetime of the batteries along with providing better monitoring, diagnostics and protection. The optimization strategy is validated experimentally, demonstrating the proposed power architecture's ability to maximize efficiency while enhancing the safety of the battery energy storage system in eVTOLs.

Large Language Models (LLMs) have taken the field of AI by storm, but their adoption in the field of Artificial Life (ALife) has been, so far, relatively reserved. In this work we investigate the potential synergies between LLMs and ALife, drawing on a large body of research in the two fields. We explore the potential of LLMs as tools for ALife research, for example, as operators for evolutionary computation or the generation of open-ended environments. Reciprocally, principles of ALife, such as self-organization, collective intelligence and evolvability can provide an opportunity for shaping the development and functionalities of LLMs, leading to more adaptive and responsive models. By investigating this dynamic interplay, the paper aims to inspire innovative crossover approaches for both ALife and LLM research. Along the way, we examine the extent to which LLMs appear to increasingly exhibit properties such as emergence or collective intelligence, expanding beyond their original goal of generating text, and potentially redefining our perception of lifelike intelligence in artificial systems.

A key function of battery management systems (BMS) in e-mobility applications is estimating the battery state of health (SoH) with high accuracy. This is typically achieved in commercial BMS using model-based methods. There has been considerable research in developing data-driven methods for improving the accuracy of SoH estimation. The data-driven methods are diverse and use different machine-learning (ML) or artificial intelligence (AI) based techniques. Complex AI/ML techniques are difficult to implement in low-cost microcontrollers used in BMS due to the extensive use of non-linear functions and large matrix operations. This paper proposes a computationally efficient and data-lightweight SoH estimation technique. Online impedance at four discrete frequencies is evaluated to derive the features of a linear regression problem. The proposed solution avoids complex mathematical operations and it is well-suited for online implementation in a commercial BMS. The accuracy of this method is validated on two experimental datasets and is shown to have a mean absolute error (MAE) of less than 2% across diverse training and testing data.

This article extends the known restricted isometric projection of sparse datasets in Euclidean spaces $\mathbb{R}^N$ down into low-dimensional subspaces $\mathbb{R}^k, k \ll N,$ to the case of low-dimensional varieties $\mathcal{M} \subset \mathbb{R}^N,$ of codimension $N - k = \omega(N)$. Applications to structured/hierarchical datasets are considered.

This work provides an exact mathematical characterization of the meniscus formed by a liquid of density $\rho$ (model for tumor tissue) when probed with a cantilever device, operating by gravity (acceleration $g$) and with surface tension coefficient $\sigma$ (material-dependent for the specific choice of liquid and cantilever). The shape and extremal parameters (maximum height $\mathcal{H}$, break-off volume $\mathcal{V}$) of the meniscus formed, as functions of $\sigma, \rho$, are found by an exact analysis. Having knowledge of the explicit relationship between these parameters allows to perform in one procedure both diagnosis and treatment.

This note expands on the recent proof \cite{ABKT} that the extremal domains for analytic content in two dimensions can only be disks and annuli. This result's unexpected implication for theoretical physics is that, for extremal domains, the analytic content is a measure of non-commutativity of the (multiplicative) adjoint operators $T, T^{\dag}$, where $T^{\dag} = \bar z$, and therefore of the quantum deformation parameter (``Planck's constant"). The annular solution (which includes the disk as a special case) is, in fact, a continuous family of solutions, corresponding to all possible positive values of the deformation parameter, consistent with the physical requirement that conformal invariance in two dimensions forbids the existence of a special length scale.

The Laplacian Growth (LG) model is known as a universality class of scale-free aggregation models in two dimensions, characterized by classical integrability and featuring finite-time boundary singularity formation. A discrete counterpart, Diffusion-Limited Aggregation (or DLA), has a similar local growth law, but significantly different global behavior. For both LG and DLA, a proper description for the scaling properties of long-time solutions is not available yet. In this note, we outline a possible approach towards finding the correct theory yielding a regularized LG and its relation to DLA.

We are united in how emotions are central to shaping our experiences; and yet, individuals differ greatly in how we each identify, categorize, and express emotions. In psychology, variation in the ability of individuals to differentiate between emotion concepts is called emotion granularity (determined through self-reports of one's emotions). High emotion granularity has been linked with better mental and physical health; whereas low emotion granularity has been linked with maladaptive emotion regulation strategies and poor health outcomes. In this work, we propose computational measures of emotion granularity derived from temporally-ordered speaker utterances in social media (in lieu of self-reports that suffer from various biases). We then investigate the effectiveness of such text-derived measures of emotion granularity in functioning as markers of various mental health conditions (MHCs). We establish baseline measures of emotion granularity derived from textual utterances, and show that, at an aggregate level, emotion granularities are significantly lower for people self-reporting as having an MHC than for the control population. Modeling of Li-ion cells is used in battery management systems (BMS) to determine key states such as state-of-charge (SoC), state-of-health (SoH), etc. Accurate models are also useful in developing a cell-level digital-twin that can be used for protection and diagnostics in the BMS. In this paper, a low-complexity model development is proposed based on the equivalent circuit model (ECM) of the Li-ion cells. The proposed approach uses online impedance measurement at discrete frequencies to derive the ECM that matches closely with the results from the electro-impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The proposed method is suitable to be implemented in a microcontroller with low-computational power, typically used in BMS. Practical design guidelines are proposed to ensure fast and accurate model development. Using the proposed method to enhance the functions of a typical automotive BMS is described. Experimental validation is performed using large prismatic cells and small-capacity cylindrical cells. Root-mean-square error (RMSE) of less than 3\% is observed for a wide variation of operating conditions.

Research in psychopathology has shown that, at an aggregate level, the patterns of emotional change over time -- emotion dynamics -- are indicators of one's mental health. One's patterns of emotion change have traditionally been determined through self-reports of emotions; however, there are known issues with accuracy, bias, and ease of data collection. Recent approaches to determining emotion dynamics from one's everyday utterances addresses many of these concerns, but it is not yet known whether these measures of utterance emotion dynamics (UED) correlate with mental health diagnoses. Here, for the first time, we study the relationship between tweet emotion dynamics and mental health disorders. We find that each of the UED metrics studied varied by the user's self-disclosed diagnosis. For example: average valence was significantly higher (i.e., more positive text) in the control group compared to users with ADHD, MDD, and PTSD. Valence variability was significantly lower in the control group compared to ADHD, depression, bipolar disorder, MDD, PTSD, and OCD but not PPD. Rise and recovery rates of valence also exhibited significant differences from the control. This work provides important early evidence for how linguistic cues pertaining to emotion dynamics can play a crucial role as biosocial markers for mental illnesses and aid in the understanding, diagnosis, and management of mental health disorders., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

The ability to invent novel and interesting problems is a remarkable feature of human intelligence that drives innovation, art, and science. We propose a method that aims to automate this process by harnessing the power of state-of-the-art generative models to produce a diversity of challenging yet solvable problems, here in the context of Python programming puzzles. Inspired by the intrinsically motivated literature, Autotelic CodE Search (ACES) jointly optimizes for the diversity and difficulty of generated problems. We represent problems in a space of LLM-generated semantic descriptors describing the programming skills required to solve them (e.g. string manipulation, dynamic programming, etc.) and measure their difficulty empirically as a linearly decreasing function of the success rate of Llama-3-70B, a state-of-the-art LLM problem solver. ACES iteratively prompts a large language model to generate difficult problems achieving a diversity of target semantic descriptors (goal-directed exploration) using previously generated problems as in-context examples. ACES generates problems that are more diverse and more challenging than problems produced by baseline methods and three times more challenging than problems found in existing Python programming benchmarks on average across 11 state-of-the-art code LLMs.

Origami structures have been widely explored in robotics due to their many potential advantages. Origami robots can be very compact, as well as cheap and efficient to produce. In particular, they can be constructed in a flat format using modern manufacturing techniques. Rotational motion is essential for robotics, and a variety of origami rotational joints have been proposed in the literature. However, few of these are even approximately flat-foldable. One potential enabler of flat origami rotational joints is the inclusion of lightweight pneumatic pouches which actuate the origami's folds; however, pouch actuators only enable a relatively small amount of rotational displacement. The previously proposed Four-Vertex Origami is a flat-foldable structure which provides an angular multiplier for a pouch actuator, but suffers from a degenerate state. This paper presents a novel rigid origami, the Self-Lock Origami, which eliminates this degeneracy by slightly relaxing the assumption of flat-foldability. This joint is analysed in terms of a trade-off between the angular multiplier and the mechanical advantage. Furthermore, the Self-Lock Origami is a modular joint which can be connected to similar or different joints to produce complex movements for various applications; three different manipulator designs are introduced as a proof of concept., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

Emerging psychopathology studies are showing that patterns of changes in emotional state -- emotion dynamics -- are associated with overall well-being and mental health. More recently, there has been some work in tracking emotion dynamics through one's utterances, allowing for data to be collected on a larger scale across time and people. However, several questions about how emotion dynamics change with age, especially in children, and when determined through children's writing, remain unanswered. In this work, we use both a lexicon and a machine learning based approach to quantify characteristics of emotion dynamics determined from poems written by children of various ages. We show that both approaches point to similar trends: consistent increasing intensities for some emotions (e.g., anger, fear, joy, sadness, arousal, and dominance) with age and a consistent decreasing valence with age. We also find increasing emotional variability, rise rates (i.e., emotional reactivity), and recovery rates (i.e., emotional regulation) with age. These results act as a useful baselines for further research in how patterns of emotions expressed by children change with age, and their association with mental health., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures

Emotion arcs capture how an individual (or a population) feels over time. They are widely used in industry and research; however, there is little work on evaluating the automatically generated arcs. This is because of the difficulty of establishing the true (gold) emotion arc. Our work, for the first time, systematically and quantitatively evaluates automatically generated emotion arcs. We also compare two common ways of generating emotion arcs: Machine-Learning (ML) models and Lexicon-Only (LexO) methods. By running experiments on 18 diverse datasets in 9 languages, we show that despite being markedly poor at instance level emotion classification, LexO methods are highly accurate at generating emotion arcs when aggregating information from hundreds of instances. We also show, through experiments on six indigenous African languages, as well as Arabic, and Spanish, that automatic translations of English emotion lexicons can be used to generate high-quality emotion arcs in less-resource languages. This opens up avenues for work on emotions in languages from around the world; which is crucial for commerce, public policy, and health research in service of speakers often left behind. Humans learn to master open-ended repertoires of skills by imagining and practicing their own goals. This autotelic learning process, literally the pursuit of self-generated (auto) goals (telos), becomes more and more open-ended as the goals become more diverse, abstract and creative. The resulting exploration of the space of possible skills is supported by an inter-individual exploration: goal representations are culturally evolved and transmitted across individuals, in particular using language. Current artificial agents mostly rely on predefined goal representations corresponding to goal spaces that are either bounded (e.g. list of instructions), or unbounded (e.g. the space of possible visual inputs) but are rarely endowed with the ability to reshape their goal representations, to form new abstractions or to imagine creative goals. In this paper, we introduce a language model augmented autotelic agent (LMA3) that leverages a pretrained language model (LM) to support the representation, generation and learning of diverse, abstract, human-relevant goals. The LM is used as an imperfect model of human cultural transmission; an attempt to capture aspects of humans' common-sense, intuitive physics and overall interests. Specifically, it supports three key components of the autotelic architecture: 1)~a relabeler that describes the goals achieved in the agent's trajectories, 2)~a goal generator that suggests new high-level goals along with their decomposition into subgoals the agent already masters, and 3)~reward functions for each of these goals. Without relying on any hand-coded goal representations, reward functions or curriculum, we show that LMA3 agents learn to master a large diversity of skills in a task-agnostic text-based environment.

It turns out that some empirical facts in Big Data are the effects of properties of large numbers. Zipf's law 'noise' is an example of such an artefact. We expose several properties of the power law distributions and of similar distribution that occur when the population is finite and the rank and counts of elements in the population are natural numbers. We are particularly concerned with the low-rank end of the graph of the law, the potential of noise in the law, and with the approximation of the number of types of objects at various ranks. For a transparent well with a known volume capacity, changes in fluid level result in predictable changes in magnification of an overhead light source. For a given well size and fluid, the relationship between volume and magnification can be calculated if the fluid's index of refraction is known or in a naive fashion with a calibration procedure. Light source magnification can be measured through a camera and processed using computer vision contour analysis with OpenCV. This principle was applied in the design of a 3D printable sensing device using a raspberry pi zero and a camera

Laboratory scientists are well equipped with statistical tools for univariate data, yet many phenomena of scientific interest are time-variant or otherwise multidimensional. Functional data analysis is one way of approaching such data: by representing these more complex data as single data points in a mathematical space of functions. The mathematical concept of functional depth provides a notion of centrality which allows for descriptive statistics and some comparative statistics on these data. Here, we present statdepth, a Python package for functional depth-based analyses which naturally extends familiar single-data-point L-statistics and related methods to time-variant data trajectories or multidimensional data.

Building open-ended agents that can autonomously discover a diversity of behaviours is one of the long-standing goals of artificial intelligence. This challenge can be studied in the framework of autotelic RL agents, i.e. agents that learn by selecting and pursuing their own goals, self-organizing a learning curriculum. Recent work identified language as a key dimension of autotelic learning, in particular because it enables abstract goal sampling and guidance from social peers for hindsight relabelling. Within this perspective, we study the following open scientific questions: What is the impact of hindsight feedback from a social peer (e.g. selective vs. exhaustive)? How can the agent learn from very rare language goal examples in its experience replay? How can multiple forms of exploration be combined, and take advantage of easier goals as stepping stones to reach harder ones? To address these questions, we use ScienceWorld, a textual environment with rich abstract and combinatorial physics. We show the importance of selectivity from the social peer's feedback; that experience replay needs to over-sample examples of rare goals; and that following self-generated goal sequences where the agent's competence is intermediate leads to significant improvements in final performance., Comment: In review at ICML 2023

ATHENA has been designed as a general purpose detector capable of delivering the full scientific scope of the Electron-Ion Collider. Careful technology choices provide fine tracking and momentum resolution, high performance electromagnetic and hadronic calorimetry, hadron identification over a wide kinematic range, and near-complete hermeticity. This article describes the detector design and its expected performance in the most relevant physics channels. It includes an evaluation of detector technology choices, the technical challenges to realizing the detector and the R&D required to meet those challenges.

Automatically generated emotion arcs -- that capture how an individual or a population feels over time -- are widely used in industry and research. However, there is little work on evaluating the generated arcs. This is in part due to the difficulty of establishing the true (gold) emotion arc. Our work, for the first time, systematically and quantitatively evaluates automatically generated emotion arcs. We also compare two common ways of generating emotion arcs: Machine-Learning (ML) models and Lexicon-Only (LexO) methods. Using a number of diverse datasets, we systematically study the relationship between the quality of an emotion lexicon and the quality of the emotion arc that can be generated with it. We also study the relationship between the quality of an instance-level emotion detection system (say from an ML model) and the quality of emotion arcs that can be generated with it. We show that despite being markedly poor at instance level, LexO methods are highly accurate at generating emotion arcs by aggregating information from hundreds of instances. This has wide-spread implications for commercial development, as well as research in psychology, public health, digital humanities, etc. that values simple interpretable methods and disprefers the need for domain-specific training data, programming expertise, and high-carbon-footprint models.

The EIC Comprehensive Chromodynamics Experiment (ECCE) detector has been designed to address the full scope of the proposed Electron Ion Collider (EIC) physics program as presented by the National Academy of Science and provide a deeper understanding of the quark-gluon structure of matter. To accomplish this, the ECCE detector offers nearly acceptance and energy coverage along with excellent tracking and particle identification. The ECCE detector was designed to be built within the budget envelope set out by the EIC project while simultaneously managing cost and schedule risks. This article presents a collection of simulation studies using the ECCE detector concept in the context of the EIC's exclusive, diffractive, and tagging physics program, which aims to further explore the rich quark-gluon structure of nucleons and nuclei. To successfully execute the program, ECCE proposed to utilize the detecter system close to the beamline to ensure exclusivity and tag ion beam/fragments for a particular reaction of interest. Preliminary studies confirmed the proposed technology and design satisfy the requirements. The projected physics impact results are based on the projected detector performance from the simulation at 10 or 100 fb^-1 of integrated luminosity. Additionally, a few insights on the potential 2nd Interaction Region can (IR) were also documented which could serve as a guidepost for the future development of a second EIC detector.

DNNs are known to be vulnerable to so-called adversarial attacks that manipulate inputs to cause incorrect results that can be beneficial to an attacker or damaging to the victim. Recent works have proposed approximate computation as a defense mechanism against machine learning attacks. We show that these approaches, while successful for a range of inputs, are insufficient to address stronger, high-confidence adversarial attacks. To address this, we propose DNNSHIELD, a hardware-accelerated defense that adapts the strength of the response to the confidence of the adversarial input. Our approach relies on dynamic and random sparsification of the DNN model to achieve inference approximation efficiently and with fine-grain control over the approximation error. DNNSHIELD uses the output distribution characteristics of sparsified inference compared to a dense reference to detect adversarial inputs. We show an adversarial detection rate of 86% when applied to VGG16 and 88% when applied to ResNet50, which exceeds the detection rate of the state of the art approaches, with a much lower overhead. We demonstrate a software/hardware-accelerated FPGA prototype, which reduces the performance impact of DNNSHIELD relative to software-only CPU and GPU implementations.

We performed feasibility studies for various measurements that are related to unpolarized TMD distribution and fragmentation functions. The processes studied include semi-inclusive Deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) where single hadrons (pions and kaons) were detected in addition to the scattered DIS lepton. The single hadron cross sections and multiplicities were extracted as a function of the DIS variables $x$ and $Q^2$, as well as the semi-inclusive variables $z$, which corresponds to the momentum fraction the detected hadron carries relative to the struck parton and $P_T$, which corresponds to the transverse momentum of the detected hadron relative to the virtual photon. The expected statistical precision of such measurements is extrapolated to accumulated luminosities of 10 fb$^{-1}$ and potential systematic uncertainties are approximated given the deviations between true and reconstructed yields., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, to be submitted in joint ECCE proposal NIM-A volume

We performed feasibility studies for various single transverse spin measurements that are related to the Sivers effect, transversity and the tensor charge, and the Collins fragmentation function. The processes studied include semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) where single hadrons (pions and kaons) were detected in addition to the scattered DIS lepton. The data were obtained in {\sc pythia}6 and {\sc geant}4 simulated e+p collisions at 18 GeV on 275 GeV, 18 on 100, 10 on 100, and 5 on 41 that use the ECCE detector configuration. Typical DIS kinematics were selected, most notably $Q^2 > 1 $ GeV$^2$, and cover the $x$ range from $10^{-4}$ to $1$. The single spin asymmetries were extracted as a function of $x$ and $Q^2$, as well as the semi-inclusive variables $z$, and $P_T$. They are obtained in azimuthal moments in combinations of the azimuthal angles of the hadron transverse momentum and transverse spin of the nucleon relative to the lepton scattering plane. The initially unpolarized MonteCarlo was re-weighted in the true kinematic variables, hadron types and parton flavors based on global fits of fixed target SIDIS experiments and $e^+e^-$ annihilation data. The expected statistical precision of such measurements is extrapolated to 10 fb$^{-1}$ and potential systematic uncertainties are approximated given the deviations between true and reconstructed yields. The impact on the knowledge of the Sivers functions, transversity and tensor charges, and the Collins function has then been evaluated in the same phenomenological extractions as in the Yellow Report. The impact is found to be comparable to that obtained with the parameterized Yellow Report detector and shows that the ECCE detector configuration can fulfill the physics goals on these quantities., Comment: 22 pages, 22 figures, to be submitted to joint ECCE proposal NIM-A volume

The ECCE detector has been recommended as the selected reference detector for the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). A series of simulation studies have been carried out to validate the physics feasibility of the ECCE detector. In this paper, detailed studies of heavy flavor hadron and jet reconstruction and physics projections with the ECCE detector performance and different magnet options will be presented. The ECCE detector has enabled precise EIC heavy flavor hadron and jet measurements with a broad kinematic coverage. Exclusive heavy quarkonium photoproduction is one of the most popular processes in EIC, which has a large cross section and a simple final state. Due to the gluonic nature of the exchange Pomeron, this process can be related to the gluon distributions in the nucleus. The momentum transfer dependence of this process is sensitive to the interaction sites, which provides a powerful tool to probe the spatial distribution of gluons in the nucleus. Recently the problem of the origin of hadron mass has received lots of attention in determining the anomaly contribution $M_{a}$. The trace anomaly is sensitive to the gluon condensate, and exclusive production of quarkonia such as J/$\psi$ and $\Upsilon$ can serve as a sensitive probe to constrain it. The recently approved Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) will provide a unique new opportunity for searches of charged lepton flavor violation (CLFV) and other new physics scenarios. In contrast to the $e \leftrightarrow \mu$ CLFV transition for which very stringent limits exist, there is still a relatively large discovery space for the $e \to \tau$ CLFV transition, potentially to be explored by the EIC. With the latest detector design of ECCE (EIC Comprehensive Chromodynamics Experiment) and projected integral luminosity of the EIC, we find the $\tau$-leptons created in the DIS process $ep\to \tau X$ are expected to be identified with high efficiency. A first ECCE simulation study, restricted to the 3-prong $\tau$-decay mode and with limited statistics for the Standard Model backgrounds, estimates that the EIC will be able to improve the current exclusion limit on $e\to \tau$ CLFV by an order of magnitude., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, to be submitted to NIM

We describe the design and performance the calorimeter systems used in the ECCE detector design to achieve the overall performance specifications cost-effectively with careful consideration of appropriate technical and schedule risks. The calorimeter systems consist of three electromagnetic calorimeters, covering the combined pseudorapdity range from -3.7 to 3.8 and two hadronic calorimeters. In this extended abstract we discuss the opportunities and challenges of studying intrinsically-motivated agents for exploration in textual environments. We argue that there is important synergy between text environments and autonomous agents. We identify key properties of text worlds that make them suitable for exploration by autonmous agents, namely, depth, breadth, progress niches and the ease of use of language goals; we identify drivers of exploration for such agents that are implementable in text worlds. We discuss the opportunities of using autonomous agents to make progress on text environment benchmarks. Finally we list some specific challenges that need to be overcome in this area.

Nanocrystalline Si and Ge are of high interest for integrated Si photonics related to light emission, optical sensors, photodetectors, solar energy harvesting and conversion devices, and also for floating gate non-volatile memories (NVMs). In this review, we have focused on nanocrystalline porous Si (nc-PS) with extension to Si nanodots, and Ge nanocrystals (NCs)/quantum dots (QDs)/nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in oxides (SiO$_2$, TiO$_2$, HfO$_2$, Al$_2$O$_3$). The great asset of nc-PS is its intense photoluminescence in VIS at room temperature (RT), while Ge NCs/NPs embedded in oxides show high photosensitivity in VIS-NIR-SWIR in the spectral photocurrent up to 1325 nm at RT. Ge NCs/NPs/QDs floating gate NVMs present high memory performance, the retention characteristics corresponding to the state of the art for NCs floating gate NVMs. We prove the relevance of controlling the preparation parameters for obtaining films with targeted photoluminescence, photosensitivity and charge storage properties for applications, e.g. VIS-NIR-SWIR optical sensors and photodetectors, and electronic and photoelectric NVMs. We evidence the correlation of preparation conditions, morphology, composition and crystalline structure with optical, electrical, photoelectrical and charge storage properties and also evidence the contribution of quantum confinement effect, localized states and trapping centers.

We predicted, observed, and analyzed the multichord stellar occultation of the Second Gaia Data Release (Gaia DR2) source 3449076721168026624 (m$_v$ = 14.1 mag) by the plutino object 2003 VS$_2$ (hereafter, VS$_2$) on 2019 October 22. We also carried out photometric observations to derive the rotational light curve amplitude and rotational phase of VS$_2$ during the stellar occultation. Combining the results and assuming a triaxial shape, we derived the 3D shape of VS$_2$. Out of the 39 observatories involved in the observational campaign, 12 sites reported a positive detection; this makes it one of the best observed stellar occultations by a TNO so far. We obtained a rotational light curve amplitude of ${\Delta}$m = 0.264 $\pm$ 0.017 mag, a mean area-equivalent diameter of D$_{A_{eq}}$ = 545 $\pm$ 13 km, and a geometric albedo of 0.134 $\pm$ 0.010. The best triaxial shape obtained for VS$_2$ has semiaxes a = 339 $\pm$ 5 km, b = 235 $\pm$ 6 km, and c = 226 $\pm$ 8 km. The derived aspect angle is ${\theta}$ = 59${\deg} \pm$ 2${\deg}$ or its supplementary ${\theta}$ = 121${\deg} \pm$ 2${\deg}$, depending on the north-pole position. The spherical-volume equivalent diameter is D$_{V_{eq}}$ = 524 $\pm$ 7 km. If we consider large albedo patches on its surface, the semi-major axis of the ellipsoid could be ~10 km smaller. These results are compatible with the previous ones determined from the single-chord 2013 and four-chord 2014 stellar occultations and with the effective diameter and albedo derived from Herschel and Spitzer data. They provide evidence that VS$_2$'s 3D shape is not compatible with a homogeneous triaxial body in hydrostatic equilibrium, but it might be a differentiated body and/or might be sustaining some stress. No secondary features related to rings or material orbiting around VS$_2$ were detected.

The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) is a cutting-edge accelerator facility that will study the nature of the "glue" that binds the building blocks of the visible matter in the universe. The proposed experiment will be realized at Brookhaven National Laboratory in approximately 10 years from now, with detector design and R&D currently ongoing. Notably, EIC is one of the first large-scale facilities to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) already starting from the design and R&D phases. The EIC Comprehensive Chromodynamics Experiment (ECCE) is a consortium that proposed a detector design based on a 1.5T solenoid. The EIC detector proposal review concluded that the ECCE design will serve as the reference design for an EIC detector. Herein we describe a comprehensive optimization of the ECCE tracker using AI. The work required a complex parametrization of the simulated detector system. Our approach dealt with an optimization problem in a multidimensional design space driven by multiple objectives that encode the detector performance, while satisfying several mechanical constraints. We describe our strategy and show results obtained for the ECCE tracking system. The AI-assisted design is agnostic to the simulation framework and can be extended to other sub-detectors or to a system of sub-detectors to further optimize the performance of the EIC detector., Comment: 16 pages, 18 figures, 2 appendices, 3 tables

The Electron Ion Collider (EIC) is the next generation of precision QCD facility to be built at Brookhaven National Laboratory in conjunction with Thomas Jefferson National Laboratory. There are a significant number of software and computing challenges that need to be overcome at the EIC. During the EIC detector proposal development period, the ECCE consortium began identifying and addressing these challenges in the process of producing a complete detector proposal based upon detailed detector and physics simulations. In this document, the software and computing efforts to produce this proposal are discussed; furthermore, the computing and software model and resources required for the future of ECCE are described.

In this article we design a physically-inspired model-based assist-as-needed semi-autonomous control (ASC) algorithm to address the problem of safely driving a vehicle (a power wheelchair) in an environment with static obstacles. Once implemented online, the proposed algorithm requires limited computing power and relies on pre-computed (offline) maps (look-up tables). These are readily available by implementing policy iteration that minimizes the expected time to termination (safely stopping near an obstacle), by taking into account: (i) the vehicle dynamics; (ii) the drivers' intention modeled as three separate stochastic processes. We call them the expert driver, the naughty child and the blind driver models. A study with healthy participants confirmed that ASC outperforms a baseline rule-based control (a statistically significant result).

At design time, modern operating systems are locked in a specific safety and isolation strategy that mixes one or more hardware/software protection mechanisms (e.g. user/kernel separation); revisiting these choices after deployment requires a major refactoring effort. This rigid approach shows its limits given the wide variety of modern applications' safety/performance requirements, when new hardware isolation mechanisms are rolled out, or when existing ones break. We present FlexOS, a novel OS allowing users to easily specialize the safety and isolation strategy of an OS at compilation/deployment time instead of design time. This modular LibOS is composed of fine-grained components that can be isolated via a range of hardware protection mechanisms with various data sharing strategies and additional software hardening. The OS ships with an exploration technique helping the user navigate the vast safety/performance design space it unlocks. We implement a prototype of the system and demonstrate, for several applications (Redis/Nginx/SQLite), FlexOS' vast configuration space as well as the efficiency of the exploration technique: we evaluate 80 FlexOS configurations for Redis and show how that space can be probabilistically subset to the 5 safest ones under a given performance budget. Voxel-based structures provide a modular, mechanically flexible periodic lattice which can be used as a soft robot through internal deformations. To engage these structures for robotic tasks, we use a finite element method to characterize the motion caused by deforming single degrees of freedom and develop a reduced kinematic model. We find that node translations propagate periodically along geometric planes within the lattice, and briefly show that translational modes dominate the energy usage of the actuators. The resulting kinematic model frames the structural deformations in terms of user-defined control and end effector nodes, which further reduces the model size. The derived Planes of Motion (POM) model can be equivalently used for forward and inverse kinematics, as demonstrated by the design of a tripod stable gait for a locomotive voxel robot and validation of the quasi-static model through physical experiments., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

Deep neural network (DNN) classifiers are powerful tools that drive a broad spectrum of important applications, from image recognition to autonomous vehicles. Unfortunately, DNNs are known to be vulnerable to adversarial attacks that affect virtually all state-of-the-art models. These attacks make small imperceptible modifications to inputs that are sufficient to induce the DNNs to produce the wrong classification. In this paper we propose a novel, lightweight adversarial correction and/or detection mechanism for image classifiers that relies on undervolting (running a chip at a voltage that is slightly below its safe margin). We propose using controlled undervolting of the chip running the inference process in order to introduce a limited number of compute errors. We show that these errors disrupt the adversarial input in a way that can be used either to correct the classification or detect the input as adversarial. We evaluate the proposed solution in an FPGA design and through software simulation. We evaluate 10 attacks and show average detection rates of 77% and 90% on two popular DNNs.

Language is an interface to the outside world. In order for embodied agents to use it, language must be grounded in other, sensorimotor modalities. While there is an extended literature studying how machines can learn grounded language, the topic of how to learn spatio-temporal linguistic concepts is still largely uncharted. To make progress in this direction, we here introduce a novel spatio-temporal language grounding task where the goal is to learn the meaning of spatio-temporal descriptions of behavioral traces of an embodied agent. This is achieved by training a truth function that predicts if a description matches a given history of observations. The descriptions involve time-extended predicates in past and present tense as well as spatio-temporal references to objects in the scene. To study the role of architectural biases in this task, we train several models including multimodal Transformer architectures; the latter implement different attention computations between words and objects across space and time. We test models on two classes of generalization: 1) generalization to randomly held-out sentences; 2) generalization to grammar primitives. We observe that maintaining object identity in the attention computation of our Transformers is instrumental to achieving good performance on generalization overall, and that summarizing object traces in a single token has little influence on performance. We then discuss how this opens new perspectives for language-guided autonomous embodied agents. Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) are employed in an increasing number of applications, some of which are safety critical. Unfortunately, DNNs are known to be vulnerable to so-called adversarial attacks that manipulate inputs to cause incorrect results that can be beneficial to an attacker or damaging to the victim. Multiple defenses have been proposed to increase the robustness of DNNs. In general, these defenses have high overhead, some require attack-specific re-training of the model or careful tuning to adapt to different attacks. This paper presents HASI, a hardware-accelerated defense that uses a process we call stochastic inference to detect adversarial inputs. We show that by carefully injecting noise into the model at inference time, we can differentiate adversarial inputs from benign ones. HASI uses the output distribution characteristics of noisy inference compared to a non-noisy reference to detect adversarial inputs. We show an adversarial detection rate of 86% when applied to VGG16 and 93% when applied to ResNet50, which exceeds the detection rate of the state of the art approaches, with a much lower overhead. We demonstrate two software/hardware-accelerated co-designs, which reduces the performance impact of stochastic inference to 1.58X-2X relative to the unprotected baseline, compared to 15X-20X overhead for a software-only GPU implementation.

A low cost remote imaging platform for biological applications was developed. The "Picroscope" is a device that allows the user to perform longitudinal imaging studies on multi-well cell culture plates. Here we present the network architecture and software used to facilitate communication between modules within the device as well as external cloud services. A web based console was created to control the device and view experiment results. Post processing tools were developed to analyze captured data in the cloud. A potentiostat is an essential piece of analytical equipment for studying electrochemical devices and reactions. As the design of electrochemical devices evolve applications for systems with multiple working electrodes have become more common. These applications drive a need for low-cost multi-channel potentiostat systems. We have developed a portable low-cost scalable system with a modular design that can support 8 to 64 channels at a cost as low as \$8 per channel. This design can replace the functionality of commercial potentiostats which cost upwards of \$10k for certain applications. Each channel in the multi-channel potentiostat has an independent adjustable voltage source with a built-in ammeter and switch, making the device flexible for various configurations. The multi-channel potentiostat is designed for low current applications (nA range), but its purpose can change by varying its shunt resistor value. The system can either function as a standalone device or remotely controlled. We demonstrate the functionality of this system for the control of a 24-channel bioelectronic ion pump for open- and closed- loop control of pH., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

Unikernels are famous for providing excellent performance in terms of boot times, throughput and memory consumption, to name a few metrics. However, they are infamous for making it hard and extremely time consuming to extract such performance, and for needing significant engineering effort in order to port applications to them. We introduce Unikraft, a novel micro-library OS that (1) fully modularizes OS primitives so that it is easy to customize the unikernel and include only relevant components and (2) exposes a set of composable, performance-oriented APIs in order to make it easy for developers to obtain high performance. Our evaluation using off-the-shelf applications such as nginx, SQLite, and Redis shows that running them on Unikraft results in a 1.7x-2.7x performance improvement compared to Linux guests. In addition, Unikraft images for these apps are around 1MB, require less than 10MB of RAM to run, and boot in around 1ms on top of the VMM time (total boot time 3ms-40ms). We review the zeta-function representation of codewords allowed by a parity-check code based on a bipartite graph, and then investigate the effect of disorder on the effective distribution of codewords. The randomness (or disorder) is implemented by sampling the graph from an ensemble of random graphs, and computing the average zeta function of the ensemble. In the limit of arbitrarily large size for the vertex set of the graph, we find an exponential decay of the likelihood for nontrivial codewords corresponding to graph cycles. This result provides a quantitative estimate of the effect of randomization in cybersecurity applications.

With the increase in adoption of machine learning tools by organizations risks of unfairness abound, especially when human decision processes in outcomes of socio-economic importance such as hiring, housing, lending, and admissions are automated. We reveal sources of unfair machine learning, review fairness criteria, and provide a framework which, if implemented, would enable an organization to both avoid implementing an unfair machine learning model, but also to avoid the common situation that as an algorithm learns with more data it can become unfair over time. Issues of behavioral ethics in machine learning implementations by organizations have not been thoroughly addressed in the literature, because many of the necessary concepts are dispersed across three literatures: ethics, machine learning, and management. Further, tradeoffs between fairness criteria in machine learning have not been addressed with regards to organizations. We propose a modular architecture for neuromorphic closed-loop control based on bistable relaxation oscillator modules consisting of three spiking neurons each. Like its biological prototypes, this basic component is robust to parameter variation but can be modulated by external inputs. By combining these modules, we can construct a neural state machine capable of generating the cyclic or repetitive behaviors necessary for legged locomotion. A concrete case study for the approach is provided by a modular robot constructed from flexible plastic volumetric pixels, in which we produce a forward crawling gait entrained to the natural frequency of the robot by a minimal system of twelve neurons organized into four modules., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures
