X-ray emissions due to the two-electron one-photon (TEOP) process in the neon projectile and aluminum target have been successfully observed for the beam energy window of 1.8-2.1 MeV. Experimental TEOP transition energies have been compared with theoretical predictions of flexible atomic structure code (FAC) and General-purpose Relativistic Atomic Structure (GRASP) package. Present results have been verified with reported theoretical and experimental values. Transition rates of the TEOP transitions have also been studied using the said codes. The observed lines have been assigned when the measured transition energies are in good agreement with the theoretical values. Such assignments have further been validated with the good agreements between the experimental and theoretical transition rates. Note that only the TEOP lines in projectile ions are seen with 1.8 MeV energy. In contrast, the TEOP lines in target ions are also observed well with 2.1 MeV energy. A significant challenge for computation offloading in wireless multi-hop networks is the complex interaction among traffic flows in the presence of interference. Existing approaches often ignore these key effects and/or rely on outdated queueing and channel state information. To fill these gaps, we reformulate joint offloading and routing as a routing problem on an extended graph with physical and virtual links. We adopt the state-of-the-art shortest path-biased Backpressure routing algorithm, which allows the destination and the route of a job to be dynamically adjusted at every time step based on network-wide long-term information and real-time states of local neighborhoods. Graph neural networks (GNNs) are powerful tools for developing scalable, decentralized artificial intelligence in large-scale networked systems, such as wireless networks, power grids, and transportation networks. Currently, GNNs in networked systems mostly follow a paradigm of `centralized training, distributed execution', which limits their adaptability and slows down their development cycles. In this work, we fill this gap for the first time by developing a communication-efficient, fully distributed online training approach for GNNs applied to large networked systems. For a mini-batch with $B$ samples, our approach of training an $L$-layer GNN only adds $L$ rounds of message passing to the $LB$ rounds required by GNN inference, with doubled message sizes. Through numerical experiments in graph-based node regression, power allocation, and link scheduling in wireless networks, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in training GNNs under supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning paradigms.

Deep neural networks trained via empirical risk minimisation often exhibit significant performance disparities across groups, particularly when group and task labels are spuriously correlated (e.g., "grassy background" and "cows"). Existing bias mitigation methods that aim to address this issue often either rely on group labels for training or validation, or require an extensive hyperparameter search. Such data and computational requirements hinder the practical deployment of these methods, especially when datasets are too large to be group-annotated, computational resources are limited, and models are trained through already complex pipelines. In this paper, we propose Targeted Augmentations for Bias Mitigation (TAB), a simple hyperparameter-free framework that leverages the entire training history of a helper model to identify spurious samples, and generate a group-balanced training set from which a robust model can be trained. A mixture of streaming and short-lived traffic presents a common yet challenging scenario for Backpressure routing in wireless multi-hop networks. Although state-of-the-art shortest-path biased backpressure (SP-BP) can significantly improve the latency of backpressure routing while retaining throughput optimality, it still suffers from the last-packet problem due to its inherent per-commodity queue structure and link capacity assignment. To address this challenge, we propose Ant Backpressure (Ant-BP), a fully distributed routing scheme that incorporates the multi-path routing capability of SP-BP into ant colony optimization (ACO) routing, which allows packets of different commodities to share link capacity in a first-in-first-out (FIFO) manner. Numerical evaluations show that Ant-BP can improve the latency and delivery ratio over SP-BP and ACO routing schemes, while achieving the same throughput of SP-BP under low-to-medium traffic loads.

In order to deploy deep neural networks (DNNs) in high-stakes scenarios, it is imperative that DNNs provide inference robust to external perturbations - both intentional and unintentional. Although the resilience of DNNs to intentional and unintentional perturbations has been widely investigated, a unified vision of these inherently intertwined problem domains is still missing. In this work, we fill this gap by providing a survey of the state of the art and highlighting the similarities of the proposed approaches.We also analyze the research challenges that need to be addressed to deploy resilient and secure DNNs. As there has not been any such survey connecting the resilience of DNNs to intentional and unintentional perturbations, we believe this work can help advance the frontier in both domains by enabling the exchange of ideas between the two communities.

Given a graph $G = (V, E)$ and an integer $k$, the Minimum Membership Dominating Set problem asks to compute a set $S \subseteq V$ such that for each $v \in V$, $1 \leq |N[v] \cap S| \leq k$. The problem is known to be NP-complete even on split graphs and planar bipartite graphs. In this paper, we approach the problem from the algorithmic standpoint and obtain several interesting results. We give an $\mathcal{O}^*(1.747^n)$ time algorithm for the problem on split graphs. Following a reduction from a special case of 1-in-3 SAT problem, we show that there is no sub-exponential time algorithm running in time $\mathcal{O}^*(2^{o(n)})$ for bipartite graphs, for any $k \geq 2$. We also prove that the problem is NP-complete when $\Delta = k+2$, for any $k\geq 5$, even for bipartite graphs. We investigate the parameterized complexity of the problem for the parameter twin cover and the combined parameter distance to cluster, membership($k$) and prove that the problem is fixed-parameter tractable. Automatic Sign Language (SL) recognition is an important task in the computer vision community. To build a robust SL recognition system, we need a considerable amount of data which is lacking particularly in Indian sign language (ISL). In this paper, we introduce a large-scale isolated ISL dataset and a novel SL recognition model based on skeleton graph structure. The dataset covers 2002 daily used common words in the deaf community recorded by 20 (10 male and 10 female) deaf adult signers (contains 40033 videos). We propose a SL recognition model namely Hierarchical Windowed Graph Attention Network (HWGAT) by utilizing the human upper body skeleton graph. The HWGAT tries to capture distinctive motions by giving attention to different body parts induced by the human skeleton graph. The utility of the proposed dataset and the usefulness of our model are evaluated through extensive experiments. We pre-trained the proposed model on the presented dataset and fine-tuned it across different sign language datasets further boosting the performance of 1.10, 0.46, 0.78, and 6.84 percentage points on INCLUDE, LSA64, AUTSL and WLASL respectively compared to the existing state-of-the-art keypoints-based models.

To reduce the latency of Backpressure (BP) routing in wireless multi-hop networks, we propose to enhance the existing shortest path-biased BP (SP-BP) and sojourn time-based backlog metrics, since they introduce no additional time step-wise signaling overhead to the basic BP. Rather than relying on hop-distance, we introduce a new edge-weighted shortest path bias built on the scheduling duty cycle of wireless links, which can be predicted by a graph convolutional neural network based on the topology and traffic of wireless networks. Additionally, we tackle three long-standing challenges associated with SP-BP: optimal bias scaling, efficient bias maintenance, and integration of delay awareness. Our proposed solutions inherit the throughput optimality of the basic BP, as well as its practical advantages of low complexity and fully distributed implementation. Our approaches rely on common link features and introduces only a one-time constant overhead to previous SP-BP schemes, or a one-time overhead linear in the network size to the basic BP. The most recent advances in medical imaging that have transformed diagnosis, especially in the case of interpreting X-ray images, are actively involved in the healthcare sector. The advent of digital image processing technology and the implementation of deep learning models such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have made the analysis of X-rays much more accurate and efficient. In this article, some essential techniques such as edge detection, region-growing technique, and thresholding approach, and the deep learning models such as variants of YOLOv8-which is the best object detection and segmentation framework-are reviewed. We further investigate that the traditional image processing techniques like segmentation are very much simple and provides the alternative to the advanced methods as well. Our review gives useful knowledge on the practical usage of the innovative and traditional approaches of manual X-ray interpretation. The information flows among the people while they communicate through social media websites. Due to the dependency on digital media, a person shares important information or regular updates with friends and family. The set of persons on social media forms a social network. Influence Maximization (IM) is a known problem in social networks. In social networks, information flows from one person to another using an underlying diffusion model. There are two fundamental diffusion models: the Independent Cascade Model (ICM) and the Linear Threshold Model (LTM). In this paper, we study a variant of the IM problem called Minimum Influential Seeds (MINFS) problem proposed by Qiang et al.[16]. It generalizes the classical IM problem with LTM as the diffusion model. Compared to IM, this variant has additional parameters: the influence threshold for each node and the propagation range. The propagation range is a positive integer that specifies how far the information can propagate from a node. A node on the network is not immediately influenced until it receives the same information from enough number of neighbors (influence threshold). Similarly, any node does not forward information until it receives the same information from a sufficient number of neighbors (activation threshold). Once a node becomes activated, it tries to activate or influence its neighbors. The MINFS problem aims to select the minimum number of initial spreader nodes such that all nodes of the graph are influenced. In this paper, we extend the study of the MINFS problem. We propose heuristics that construct seed sets based on the average degree of non-activated nodes, closest first, and backbone-based heaviest path.

Supervised learning methods have been found to exhibit inductive biases favoring simpler features. When such features are spuriously correlated with the label, this can result in suboptimal performance on minority subgroups. Despite the growing popularity of methods which learn from unlabeled data, the extent to which these representations rely on spurious features for prediction is unclear. In this work, we explore the impact of spurious features on Self-Supervised Learning (SSL) for visual representation learning. We first empirically show that commonly used augmentations in SSL can cause undesired invariances in the image space, and illustrate this with a simple example. We further show that classical approaches in combating spurious correlations, such as dataset re-sampling during SSL, do not consistently lead to invariant representations. Motivated by these findings, we propose LateTVG to remove spurious information from these representations during pre-training, by regularizing later layers of the encoder via pruning. We find that our method produces representations which outperform the baselines on several benchmarks, without the need for group or label information during SSL.

Nowadays, organizations use viral marketing strategies to promote their products through social networks. It is expensive to directly send the product promotional information to all the users in the network. In this context, Kempe et al. \cite{kempe2003maximizing} introduced the Influence Maximization (IM) problem, which identifies $k$ most influential nodes (spreader nodes), such that the maximum number of people in the network adopts the promotional message. Many variants of the IM problem have been studied in the literature, namely, Perfect Evangelising Set (PES), Perfect Awareness Problem (PAP), etc. In this work, we propose a maximization version of PAP called the \IM{} problem. Different people have different levels of interest in a particular product. This is modeled by assigning an interest value to each node in the network. Then, the problem is to select $k$ initial spreaders such that the sum of the interest values of the people (nodes) who become aware of the message is maximized. We study the \IM{} problem under two popular diffusion models: the Linear Threshold Model (LTM) and the Independent Cascade Model (ICM). We show that the \IM{} problem is NP-Hard under LTM. We give linear programming formulation for the problem under LTM. We propose four heuristic algorithms for the \IM{} problem: \LBE{} (\LB{}), Maximum Degree First Heuristic (\MD{}), \PBE{} (\PB{}), and Maximum Profit Based Greedy Heuristic (\MP{}). Extensive experimentation has been carried out on many real-world benchmark data sets for both diffusion models. The results show that among the proposed heuristics, \MP{} performs better in maximizing the interest value.

Scanning Thermal Microscopy (SThM) has become an important measurement tool for characterizing the thermal properties of materials at the nanometer scale. This technique requires a SThM probe that combines an Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) probe and a very sensitive resistive thermometry; the thermometer being located at the apex of the probe tip allows the mapping of temperature or thermal properties of nanostructured materials with very high spatial resolution. The high interest of the SThM technique in the field of thermal nanoscience currently suffers from a low temperature sensitivity despite its high spatial resolution. To address this challenge, we developed a high vacuum-based AFM system hosting a highly sensitive niobium nitride (NbN) SThM probe to demonstrate its unique performance. As a proof of concept, we utilized this custom-built system to carry out thermal measurements using the 3$\omega$ method. By measuring the $V_{3\omega}$ voltage on the NbN resistive thermometer in vacuum conditions we were able to determine the SThM probe's thermal conductance and thermal time constant. Human gait has been shown to provide crucial motion cues for various applications. Recognizing patterns in human gait has been widely adopted in various application areas such as security, virtual reality gaming, medical rehabilitation, and ailment identification. Furthermore, wearable inertial sensors have been widely used for not only recording gait but also to predict users' demography. Machine Learning techniques such as deep learning, combined with inertial sensor signals, have shown promising results in recognizing patterns in human gait and estimate users' demography. However, the black-box nature of such deep learning models hinders the researchers from uncovering the reasons behind the model's predictions. Therefore, we propose leveraging deep learning and Layer-Wise Relevance Propagation (LRP) to identify the important variables that play a vital role in identifying the users' demography such as age and gender. To assess the efficacy of this approach we train a deep neural network model on a large sensor-based gait dataset consisting of 745 subjects to identify users' age and gender. Using LRP we identify the variables relevant for characterizing the gait patterns. Thus, we enable interpretation of non-linear ML models which are experts in identifying the users' demography based on inertial signals. We believe this approach can not only provide clinicians information about the gait parameters relevant to age and gender but also can be expanded to analyze and diagnose gait disorders.

The key premise of federated learning (FL) is to train ML models across a diverse set of data-owners (clients), without exchanging local data. An overarching challenge to this date is client heterogeneity, which may arise not only from variations in data distribution, but also in data quality, as well as compute/communication latency. An integrated view of these diverse and concurrent sources of heterogeneity is critical; for instance, low-latency clients may have poor data quality, and vice versa. In this work, we propose FLASH(Federated Learning Across Simultaneous Heterogeneities), a lightweight and flexible client selection algorithm that outperforms state-of-the-art FL frameworks under extensive sources of heterogeneity, by trading-off the statistical information associated with the client's data quality, data distribution, and latency. FLASH is the first method, to our knowledge, for handling all these heterogeneities in a unified manner. To do so, FLASH models the learning dynamics through contextual multi-armed bandits (CMAB) and dynamically selects the most promising clients. Through extensive experiments, we demonstrate that FLASH achieves substantial and consistent improvements over state-of-the-art baselines -- as much as 10% in absolute accuracy -- thanks to its unified approach. Importantly, FLASH also outperforms federated aggregation methods that are designed to handle highly heterogeneous settings and even enjoys a performance boost when integrated with them.

We propose a learning-based framework for efficient power allocation in ad hoc interference networks under episodic constraints. The problem of optimal power allocation -- for maximizing a given network utility metric -- under instantaneous constraints has recently gained significant popularity. Several learnable algorithms have been proposed to obtain fast, effective, and near-optimal performance. However, a more realistic scenario arises when the utility metric has to be optimized for an entire episode under time-coupled constraints. In this case, the instantaneous power needs to be regulated so that the given utility can be optimized over an entire sequence of wireless network realizations while satisfying the constraint at all times. Solving each instance independently will be myopic as the long-term constraint cannot modulate such a solution. Instead, we frame this as a constrained and sequential decision-making problem, and employ an actor-critic algorithm to obtain the constraint-aware power allocation at each step. Parameter-efficient tuning (PET) methods such as LoRA, Adapter, and Visual Prompt Tuning (VPT) have found success in enabling adaptation to new domains by tuning small modules within a transformer model. However, the number of domains encountered during test time can be very large, and the data is usually unlabeled. Thus, adaptation to new domains is challenging; it is also impractical to generate customized tuned modules for each such domain. Toward addressing these challenges, this work introduces PLUTO: a Plug-and-pLay modUlar Test-time domain adaptatiOn strategy. We pre-train a large set of modules, each specialized for different source domains, effectively creating a ``module store''. Given a target domain with few-shot unlabeled data, we introduce an unsupervised test-time adaptation (TTA) method to (1) select a sparse subset of relevant modules from this store and (2) create a weighted combination of selected modules without tuning their weights. This plug-and-play nature enables us to harness multiple most-relevant source domains in a single inference call. Comprehensive evaluations demonstrate that PLUTO uniformly outperforms alternative TTA methods and that selecting $\leq$5 modules suffice to extract most of the benefit. At a high level, our method equips pre-trained transformers with the capability to dynamically adapt to new domains, motivating a new paradigm for efficient and scalable domain adaptation.

We propose a joint channel estimation and data detection algorithm for massive multilple-input multiple-output systems based on diffusion models. Our proposed method solves the blind inverse problem by sampling from the joint posterior distribution of the symbols and channels and computing an approximate maximum a posteriori estimation. To achieve this, we construct a diffusion process that models the joint distribution of the channels and symbols given noisy observations, and then run the reverse process to generate the samples. A unique contribution of the algorithm is to include the discrete prior distribution of the symbols and a learned prior for the channels. Indeed, this is key as it allows a more efficient exploration of the joint search space and, therefore, enhances the sampling process. Through numerical experiments, we demonstrate that our method yields a lower normalized mean squared error than competing approaches and reduces the pilot overhead.

We report a comprehensive study on the electronic transport properties of SrZn2Ge2 single crystals. The electrical resistivity of the compound exhibits metallic behavior, following a T^2 dependence below 35 K, consistent with the Fermi liquid behavior. However, a notable deviation is observed from this behavior at lower temperatures as a pronounced resistivity plateau emerges below 10 K. This plateau is remarkably robust, and persists under the magnetic fields of up to 10 T. Both the transverse and longitudinal magnetoresistance exhibit a crossover at critical field B* from weak-field quadratic-like to high-field unsaturated linear field dependence at low temperatures (T \leq 50 K). Possible sources of linear magnetoresistance are discussed based on the Fermi surface topology, classical and quantum transport models. The Hall resistivity data establish SrZn2Ge2 as a multiband system with contributions from both the electrons and holes. The Hall coefficient is observed to decrease with increasing temperature and magnetic field, changing its sign from positive to negative. The negative Hall coefficient observed at low temperatures in high fields and at high temperatures over the entire field range suggests that the highly mobile electron charge carriers dominate the electronic transport. Our first-principles calculations show that nontrivial topological surface states exist in SrZn2Ge2 within the bulk gap along the Gamma-M path. Notably, these surface states extend from the valence to conduction band with their number varying based on the Sr and Ge termination plane. The Fermi surface of the compound exhibits a distinct tetragonal petal-like structure, with one open and several closed surfaces. Backpressure (BP) routing is a well-established framework for distributed routing and scheduling in wireless multi-hop networks. However, the basic BP scheme suffers from poor end-to-end delay due to the drawbacks of slow startup, random walk, and the last packet problem. Biased BP with shortest path awareness can address the first two drawbacks, and sojourn time-based backlog metrics were proposed for the last packet problem. Furthermore, these BP variations require no additional signaling overhead in each time step compared to the basic BP. In this work, we further address three long-standing challenges associated with the aforementioned low-cost BP variations, including optimal scaling of the biases, bias maintenance under mobility, and incorporating sojourn time awareness into biased BP. Our analysis and experimental results show that proper scaling of biases can be achieved with the help of common link features, which can effectively reduce end-to-end delay of BP by mitigating the random walk of packets under low-to-medium traffic, including the last packet scenario. Electronic properties of spin polarized antiferromagnetic ACrO3 (A = La, Y) are explored with Hubbard Model using Density Functional Theory (DFT). These two isostructural systems are investigated using the different Hubbard energy and analyzed the hybridization of chromium 3d orbitals and oxygen 2p orbitals and the change in energy band gaps against the Hubbard energy. The bond length and bond angle affect significantly the orbital contributions of Cr-3d and O-2p electrons for both the system. We noticed that the Cr-O hybridization affects the orbital degeneracy and is substantiated with partial density of states. These results emphasize the contribution of Hubbard energy in correlated electron systems.

Given a graph $G = (V, E)$, a non-empty set $S \subseteq V$ is a defensive alliance, if for every vertex $v \in S$, the majority of its closed neighbours are in $S$, that is, $|N_G[v] \cap S| \geq |N_G[v] \setminus S|$. The decision version of the problem is known to be NP-Complete even when restricted to split and bipartite graphs. The problem is \textit{fixed-parameter tractable} for the parameters solution size, vertex cover number and neighbourhood diversity. For the parameters treewidth and feedback vertex set number, the problem is W[1]-hard. \\ \hspace*{2em} In this paper, we study the defensive alliance problem for graphs with bounded degree. We show that the problem is \textit{polynomial-time solvable} on graphs with maximum degree at most 5 and NP-Complete on graphs with maximum degree 6. This rules out the fixed-parameter tractability of the problem for the parameter maximum degree of the graph. We also consider the problem from the standpoint of parameterized complexity. We provide an FPT algorithm using the Integer Linear Programming approach for the parameter distance to clique. Given a graph $G=(V, E)$, the problem of Graph Burning is to find a sequence of nodes from $V$, called a burning sequence, to burn the whole graph. This is a discrete-step process, and at each step, an unburned vertex is selected as an agent to spread fire to its neighbors by marking it as a burnt node. A burnt node spreads the fire to its neighbors at the next consecutive step. The goal is to find the burning sequence of minimum length. The Graph Burning problem is NP-Hard for general graphs and even for binary trees. A few approximation results are known, including a $ 3$-approximation algorithm for general graphs and a $ 2$-approximation algorithm for trees. The Graph Burning on directed graphs is more challenging than on undirected graphs. In this paper, we propose 1) A $2.75$-approximation algorithm for a cactus graph (undirected), 2) A $3$-approximation algorithm for multi-rooted directed trees (polytree) and 3) A $1.905$-approximation algorithm for single-rooted directed tree (arborescence). We propose the deep demixing (DDmix) model, a graph autoencoder that can reconstruct epidemics evolving over networks from partial or aggregated temporal information. Assuming knowledge of the network topology but not of the epidemic model, our goal is to estimate the complete propagation path of a disease spread. A data-driven approach is leveraged to overcome the lack of model awareness. To solve this inverse problem, DDmix is proposed as a graph conditional variational autoencoder that is trained from past epidemic spreads. DDmix seeks to capture key aspects of the underlying (unknown) spreading dynamics in its latent space. Using epidemic spreads simulated in synthetic and real-world networks, we demonstrate the accuracy of DDmix by comparing it with multiple (non-graph-aware) learning algorithms. The generalizability of DDmix is highlighted across different types of networks. Network digital twins (NDTs) facilitate the estimation of key performance indicators (KPIs) before physically implementing a network, thereby enabling efficient optimization of the network configuration. In this paper, we propose a learning-based NDT for network simulators. The proposed method offers a holistic representation of information flow in a wireless network by integrating node, edge, and path embeddings. Through this approach, the model is trained to map the network configuration to KPIs in a single forward pass. Hence, it offers a more efficient alternative to traditional simulation-based methods, thus allowing for rapid experimentation and optimization. Our proposed method has been extensively tested through comprehensive experimentation in various scenarios, including wired and wireless networks. Results show that it outperforms baseline learning models in terms of accuracy and robustness. Moreover, our approach achieves comparable performance to simulators but with significantly higher computational efficiency.

Depth completion from RGB images and sparse Time-of-Flight (ToF) measurements is an important problem in computer vision and robotics. While traditional methods for depth completion have relied on stereo vision or structured light techniques, recent advances in deep learning have enabled more accurate and efficient completion of depth maps from RGB images and sparse ToF measurements. To evaluate the performance of different depth completion methods, we organized an RGB+sparse ToF depth completion competition. The competition aimed to encourage research in this area by providing a standardized dataset and evaluation metrics to compare the accuracy of different approaches. In this report, we present the results of the competition and analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the top-performing methods. We also discuss the implications of our findings for future research in RGB+sparse ToF depth completion. We hope that this competition and report will help to advance the state-of-the-art in this important area of research. Over the last few years, there has been an increasing interest in sub-solar mass black holes due to their potential to provide valuable information about cosmology or the black hole population. Motivated by this, we study observable phenomena connected to the merger of a sub-solar mass black hole with a neutron star. For this purpose, we perform new numerical-relativity simulations of a binary system composed of a black hole with mass $0.5M_\odot$ and a neutron star with mass $1.4 M_\odot$. We investigate the merger dynamics of this exotic system and provide information about the connected gravitational-wave and kilonova signals. Our study indicates that current gravitational-waveform models are unable to adequately describe such systems and that phenomenological relations connecting the binary parameters with the ejecta and remnant properties are not applicable to our system. Furthermore, we find a dependence of the kilonova signal on the azimuthal viewing angle due to the asymmetric mass ejection. Predicting the throughput of WLAN deployments is a classic problem that occurs in the design of robust and high performance WLAN systems. However, due to the increasingly complex communication protocols and the increase in interference between devices in denser and denser WLAN deployments, traditional methods either have substantial runtime or enormous prediction error and hence cannot be applied in downstream tasks. Recently, Graph Neural Networks have been proven to be powerful graph analytic models and have been broadly applied to various networking problems such as link scheduling and power allocation. In this work, we propose HTNet, a specialized Heterogeneous Temporal Graph Neural Network that extracts features from dynamic WLAN deployments. Analyzing the unique graph structure of WLAN deployment graphs, we show that HTNet achieves the maximum expressive power on each snapshot. Based on a powerful message passing scheme, HTNet requires fewer number of layers compared with other GNN-based methods which entails less supporting data and runtime. To evaluate the performance of HTNet, we prepare six different setups with more than five thousands dense dynamic WLAN deployments that cover a wide range of real-world scenarios. We propose a novel data-driven approach to allocate transmit power for federated learning (FL) over interference-limited wireless networks. The proposed method is useful in challenging scenarios where the wireless channel is changing during the FL training process and when the training data are not independent and identically distributed (non-i.i.d.) on the local devices. Intuitively, the power policy is designed to optimize the information received at the server end during the FL process under communication constraints. Ultimately, our goal is to improve the accuracy and efficiency of the global FL model being trained. The proposed power allocation policy is parameterized using graph convolutional networks (GCNs), and the associated constrained optimization problem is solved through a primal-dual (PD) algorithm. Theoretically, we show that the formulated problem has a zero duality gap and, once the power policy is parameterized, optimality depends on how expressive this parameterization is. Numerically, we demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms existing baselines under different wireless channel settings and varying degrees of data heterogeneity.

We develop an efficient and near-optimal solution for beamforming in multi-user multiple-input-multiple-output single-hop wireless ad-hoc interference networks. Inspired by the weighted minimum mean squared error (WMMSE) method, a classical approach to solving this problem, and the principle of algorithm unfolding, we present unfolded WMMSE (UWMMSE) for MU-MIMO. This method learns a parameterized functional transformation of key WMMSE parameters using graph neural networks (GNNs), where the channel and interference components of a wireless network constitute the underlying graph. These GNNs are trained through gradient descent on a network utility metric using multiple instances of the beamforming problem. Deployed language models decay over time due to shifting inputs, changing user needs, or emergent world-knowledge gaps. When such problems are identified, we want to make targeted edits while avoiding expensive retraining. However, current model editors, which modify such behaviors of pre-trained models, degrade model performance quickly across multiple, sequential edits. We propose GRACE, a lifelong model editing method, which implements spot-fixes on streaming errors of a deployed model, ensuring minimal impact on unrelated inputs. GRACE writes new mappings into a pre-trained model's latent space, creating a discrete, local codebook of edits without altering model weights. This is the first method enabling thousands of sequential edits using only streaming errors. Our experiments on T5, BERT, and GPT models show GRACE's state-of-the-art performance in making and retaining edits, while generalizing to unseen inputs. We propose a throughput-optimal biased backpressure (BP) algorithm for routing, where the bias is learned through a graph neural network that seeks to minimize end-to-end delay. Classical BP routing provides a simple yet powerful distributed solution for resource allocation in wireless multi-hop networks but has poor delay performance. A low-cost approach to improve this delay performance is to favor shorter paths by incorporating pre-defined biases in the BP computation, such as a bias based on the shortest path (hop) distance to the destination. In this work, we improve upon the widely-used metric of hop distance (and its variants) for the shortest path bias by introducing a bias based on the link duty cycle, which we predict using a graph convolutional neural network. Numerical results show that our approach can improve the delay performance compared to classical BP and existing BP alternatives based on pre-defined bias while being adaptive to interference density. In terms of complexity, our distributed implementation only introduces a one-time overhead (linear in the number of devices in the network) compared to classical BP, and a constant overhead compared to the lowest-complexity existing bias-based BP algorithms., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, submitted to IEEE ICASSP 2023

Multi-messenger observations of binary neutron star mergers provide a unique opportunity to constrain the dense-matter equation of state. Although it is known from quantum chromodynamics that hadronic matter will undergo a phase transition to exotic forms of matter, e.g., quark matter, the onset density of such a phase transition cannot be computed from first principles. Hence, it remains an open question if such phase transitions occur inside isolated neutron stars or during binary neutron star mergers, or if they appear at even higher densities that are not realized in the Cosmos. In this article, we perform numerical-relativity simulations of neutron-star mergers and investigate scenarios in which the onset density of such a phase transition is exceeded in at least one inspiralling binary component. Our simulations reveal that shortly before the merger it is possible that such stars undergo a "reverse phase transition", i.e., densities decrease and the quark core inside the star disappears leaving a purely hadronic star at merger. After the merger, when densities increase once more, the phase transition occurs again and leads, in the cases considered in this work, to a rapid formation of a black hole. We compute the gravitational-wave signal and the mass ejection for our simulations of such scenarios and find clear signatures that are related to the post-merger phase transition, e.g., smaller ejecta masses due to the softening of the equation of state through the quark core formation. We present the second data release of gravitational waveforms from binary neutron star merger simulations performed by the Computational Relativity (CoRe) collaboration. The current database consists of 254 different binary neutron star configurations and a total of 590 individual numerical-relativity simulations using various grid resolutions. The released waveform data contain the strain and the Weyl curvature multipoles up to $\ell=m=4$. They span a significant portion of the mass, mass-ratio,spin and eccentricity parameter space and include targeted configurations to the events GW170817 and GW190425. CoRe simulations are performed with 18 different equations of state, seven of which are finite temperature models, and three of which account for non-hadronic degrees of freedom. About half of the released data are computed with high-order hydrodynamics schemes for tens of orbits to merger; the other half is computed with advanced microphysics. We showcase a standard waveform error analysis and discuss the accuracy of the database in terms of faithfulness. Accurate numerical-relativity simulations are essential to study the rich phenomenology of binary neutron star systems. In this work, we focus on the material that is dynamically ejected during the merger process and on the kilonova transient it produces. Typically, radiative transfer simulations of kilonova light curves from ejecta make the assumption of homologous expansion, but this condition might not always be met at the end of usually very short numerical-relativity simulations. In this article, we adjust the infrastructure of the BAM code to enable longer simulations of the dynamical ejecta with the aim of investigating when the condition of homologous expansion is satisfied. In fact, we observe that the deviations from a perfect homologous expansion are about 30% at roughly 100ms after the merger. To determine how these deviations might affect the calculation of kilonova light curves, we extract the ejecta data for different reference times and use them as input for radiative transfer simulations. Our results show that the light curves for extraction times later than 80ms after the merger deviate by less than 0.4mag and are mostly consistent with numerical noise. Accordingly, deviations from the homologous expansion for the dynamical ejecta component are negligible for the purpose of kilonova modelling.

Meaningful uncertainty quantification in computer vision requires reasoning about semantic information -- say, the hair color of the person in a photo or the location of a car on the street. To this end, recent breakthroughs in generative modeling allow us to represent semantic information in disentangled latent spaces, but providing uncertainties on the semantic latent variables has remained challenging. In this work, we provide principled uncertainty intervals that are guaranteed to contain the true semantic factors for any underlying generative model. The method does the following: (1) it uses quantile regression to output a heuristic uncertainty interval for each element in the latent space (2) calibrates these uncertainties such that they contain the true value of the latent for a new, unseen input. The endpoints of these calibrated intervals can then be propagated through the generator to produce interpretable uncertainty visualizations for each semantic factor. Given a graph $G=(V,E)$, the problem of \gb{} is to find a sequence of nodes from $V$, called burning sequence, in order to burn the whole graph. This is a discrete-step process, in each step an unburned vertex is selected as an agent to spread fire to its neighbors by marking it as a burnt node. A node that is burnt spreads the fire to its neighbors at the next consecutive step. The goal is to find the burning sequence of minimum length. The \gb{} problem is NP-Hard for general graphs and even for binary trees. A few approximation results are known, including a $3$-approximation algorithm for general graphs and a $2$- approximation algorithm for trees. In this paper, we propose an approximation algorithm for trees that produces a burning sequence of length at most $\lfloor 1.75b(T) \rfloor + 1$, where $b(T)$ is length of the optimal burning sequence, also called the burning number of the tree $T$. We investigate the efficacy of visual prompting to adapt large-scale models in vision. Following the recent approach from prompt tuning and adversarial reprogramming, we learn a single image perturbation such that a frozen model prompted with this perturbation performs a new task. Through comprehensive experiments, we demonstrate that visual prompting is particularly effective for CLIP and robust to distribution shift, achieving performance competitive with standard linear probes. We further analyze properties of the downstream dataset, prompt design, and output transformation in regard to adaptation performance. The surprising effectiveness of visual prompting provides a new perspective on adapting pre-trained models in vision. Distributed scheduling algorithms for throughput or utility maximization in dense wireless multi-hop networks can have overwhelmingly high overhead, causing increased congestion, energy consumption, radio footprint, and security vulnerability. For wireless networks with dense connectivity, we propose a distributed scheme for link sparsification with graph convolutional networks (GCNs), which can reduce the scheduling overhead while keeping most of the network capacity. In a nutshell, a trainable GCN module generates node embeddings as topology-aware and reusable parameters for a local decision mechanism, based on which a link can withdraw itself from the scheduling contention if it is not likely to win. In medium-sized wireless networks, our proposed sparse scheduler beats classical threshold-based sparsification policies by retaining almost $70\%$ of the total capacity achieved by a distributed greedy max-weight scheduler with $0.4\%$ of the point-to-point message complexity and $2.6\%$ of the average number of interfering neighbors per link., Comment: 5 pages, 11 figures, accepted to IEEE ICASSP 2022. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2111.07017

We study neutrino oscillations in a rotating spacetime under the weak gravity limit for the trajectories of neutrinos which are constrained in the equatorial plane. Using the asymptotic form of the Kerr metric, we show that the rotation of the gravitational source non-trivially modifies the neutrino phase. We find that the oscillation probabilities deviate significantly from the corresponding results in the Schwarzschild spacetime when neutrinos are produced near the black hole (still in the weak-gravity limit) with non-zero angular momentum and detected on the same side, i.e., the non-lensed neutrino. Moreover, for a given gravitational body and geometric parameters, there exists a distance scale for every energy scale (and vice versa), after which the rotational contribution in the neutrino phase becomes significant. Using the sun-sized gravitational body in the numerical analysis of the one-sided neutrino propagation, we show that even a small rotation of the gravitational object can significantly change the survival or appearance events of a neutrino flavor registered by the detector, which is located on the earth. These effects are expected to be prominent for cosmological/astrophysical scenarios where neutrinos travel past by many (rotating) gravitational bodies and for large distances. Experimental energy values of two-electron one-photon transitions are compared with previously reported theoretical and experimental values. We propose a data-driven approach for power allocation in the context of federated learning (FL) over interference-limited wireless networks. The power policy is designed to maximize the transmitted information during the FL process under communication constraints, with the ultimate objective of improving the accuracy and efficiency of the global FL model being trained. The proposed power allocation policy is parameterized using a graph convolutional network and the associated constrained optimization problem is solved through a primal-dual algorithm. Numerical experiments show that the proposed method outperforms three baseline methods in both transmission success rate and FL global performance.

In wireless multi-hop networks, delay is an important metric for many applications. However, the max-weight scheduling algorithms in the literature typically focus on instantaneous optimality, in which the schedule is selected by solving a maximum weighted independent set (MWIS) problem on the interference graph at each time slot. These myopic policies perform poorly in delay-oriented scheduling, in which the dependency between the current backlogs of the network and the schedule of the previous time slot needs to be considered. To address this issue, we propose a delay-oriented distributed scheduler based on graph convolutional networks (GCNs). In a nutshell, a trainable GCN module generates node embeddings that capture the network topology as well as multi-step lookahead backlogs, before calling a distributed greedy MWIS solver. This paper presents a novel multi-fake evolutionary generative adversarial network(MFEGAN) for handling imbalance hyperspectral image classification. It is an end-to-end approach in which different generative objective losses are considered in the generator network to improve the classification performance of the discriminator network. Thus, the same discriminator network has been used as a standard classifier by embedding the classifier network on top of the discriminating function. The effectiveness of the proposed method has been validated through two hyperspectral spatial-spectral data sets. The same generative and discriminator architectures have been utilized with two different GAN objectives for a fair performance comparison with the proposed method. It is observed from the experimental validations that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods with better classification performance.

Numerical studies of the dynamics of gravitational systems, e.g., black hole-neutron star systems, require physical and constraint-satisfying initial data. In this article, we present the newly developed pseudo-spectral code Elliptica, an infrastructure for construction of initial data for various binary and single gravitational systems of all kinds. The elliptic equations under consideration are solved on a single spatial hypersurface of the spacetime manifold. Using coordinate maps, the hypersurface is covered by patches whose boundaries can adapt to the surface of the compact objects. To solve elliptic equations with arbitrary boundary condition, Elliptica deploys a Schur complement domain decomposition method with a direct solver. In this version, we use cubed sphere coordinate maps and the fields are expanded using Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind. Here, we explain the building blocks of Elliptica and the initial data construction algorithm for a black hole-neutron star binary system. We perform convergence tests and evolve the data to validate our results. Within our framework, the neutron star can reach spin values close to breakup with arbitrary direction, while the black hole can have arbitrary spin with dimensionless spin magnitude $\sim 0.8$., Comment: PRD version

We study the problem of optimal power allocation in single-hop multi-antenna ad-hoc wireless networks. A standard technique to solve this problem involves optimizing a tri-convex function under power constraints using a block-coordinate-descent based iterative algorithm. This approach, termed WMMSE, tends to be computationally complex and time consuming. Several learning-based approaches have been proposed to speed up the power allocation process. A recent work, UWMMSE, learns an affine transformation of a WMMSE parameter in an unfolded structure to accelerate convergence. In spite of achieving promising results, its application is limited to single-antenna wireless networks. In this work, we present a UWMMSE framework for power allocation in (multiple-input multiple-output) MIMO interference networks. A major advantage of this method lies in its use of low-complexity learnable systems in which the number of parameters scales linearly with respect to the hidden layer size of embedded neural architectures and the product of the number of transmitter and receiver antennas only, fully independent of the number of transceivers in the network. We illustrate the superiority of our method through an empirical study of our approach in comparison to WMMSE and also analyze its robustness to changes in channel conditions and network size., Comment: Accepted at MILCOM 2021

Efficient scheduling of transmissions is a key problem in wireless networks. The main challenge stems from the fact that optimal link scheduling involves solving a maximum weighted independent set (MWIS) problem, which is known to be NP-hard. In practical schedulers, centralized and distributed greedy heuristics are commonly used to approximately solve the MWIS problem. However, most of these greedy heuristics ignore important topological information of the wireless network. To overcome this limitation, we propose fast heuristics based on graph convolutional networks (GCNs) that can be implemented in centralized and distributed manners. Our centralized heuristic is based on tree search guided by a GCN and 1-step rollout. In our distributed MWIS solver, a GCN generates topology-aware node embeddings that are combined with per-link utilities before invoking a distributed greedy solver. Moreover, a novel reinforcement learning scheme is developed to train the GCN in a non-differentiable pipeline. Test results on medium-sized wireless networks show that our centralized heuristic can reach a near-optimal solution quickly, and our distributed heuristic based on a shallow GCN can reduce by nearly half the suboptimality gap of the distributed greedy solver with minimal increase in complexity. The first detections of black hole - neutron star mergers (GW200105 and GW200115) by the LIGO-Virgo-Kagra Collaboration mark a significant scientific breakthrough. The physical interpretation of pre- and post-merger signals requires careful cross-examination between observational and theoretical modelling results. Here we present the first set of black hole - neutron star simulations that were obtained with the numerical-relativity code BAM. Our initial data are constructed using the public LORENE spectral library which employs an excision of the black hole interior. BAM, in contrast, uses the moving-puncture gauge for the evolution. Therefore, we need to ``stuff'' the black hole interior with smooth initial data to evolve the binary system in time. This procedure introduces constraint violations such that the constraint damping properties of the evolution system are essential to increase the accuracy of the simulation and in particular to reduce spurious center-of-mass drifts. Within BAM we evolve the Z4c equations and we compare our gravitational-wave results with those of the SXS collaboration and results obtained with the SACRA code. While we find generally good agreement with the reference solutions and phase differences $\lesssim 0.5$ rad at the moment of merger, the absence of a clean convergence order in our simulations does not allow for a proper error quantification. We study decoherence effects in neutrino flavour oscillations in curved spacetime with particular emphasis on the lensing in a Schwarzschild geometry. Assuming Gaussian wave packets for neutrinos, we argue that the decoherence length derived from the exponential suppression of the flavour transition amplitude depends on the proper time of the geodesic connecting the events of the production and detection in general gravitational setting. In the weak gravity limit, the proper time between two events of given proper distance is smaller than that in the flat spacetime. Therefore, in presence of a Schwarzschild object, the neutrino wave packets have to travel relatively more physical distance in space to lapse the same amount of proper time before they decoher. For non-radial propagation applicable to the lensing phenomena, we show that the decoherence, in general, is sensitive to the absolute values of neutrino masses as well as the classical trajectories taken by neutrinos between the source and detector along with the spatial widths of neutrino wave packets. At distances beyond the decoherence length, the probability of neutrino flavour transition due to lensing attains a value which depends only on the leptonic mixing parameters.
