We compute the algebraic Picard group of the category of $K(n)$-local spectra, for all heights $n$ and all primes $p$. In particular, we show that it is always finitely generated over $\mathbb{Z}_p$ and, whenever $n \geq 2$, is of rank $2$, thereby confirming a prediction made by Hopkins in the early 1990s. In fact, with the exception of the anomalous case $n=p=2$, we provide a full set of topological generators for these groups. Migraine, a prevalent neurological disorder, has been associated with various ocular manifestations suggestive of neuronal and microvascular deficits. However, there is limited understanding of the extent to which retinal imaging may discriminate between individuals with migraines versus without migraines. In this study, we apply convolutional neural networks to color fundus photography (CFP) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) data to investigate differences in the retina that may not be apparent through traditional human-based interpretations of retinal imaging. Retrospective data of CFP type 1 [posterior pole] and type 2 [optic nerve head (ONH)] from 369 and 336 participants respectively were analyzed. All participants had bilaterally normal optic nerves and maculae, with no retinal-involving diseases. CFP images were concatenated with OCT default ONH measurements, then inputted through three convolutional neural networks - VGG-16, ResNet-50, and Inceptionv3. The primary outcome was performance of discriminating between with migraines versus without migraines, using retinal microvascular and neuronal imaging characteristics. Using CFP type 1 data, discrimination (AUC [95% CI]) was high (0.84 [0.8, 0.88] to 0.87 [0.84, 0.91]) and not significantly different between VGG-16, ResNet-50, and Inceptionv3. Using CFP type 2 [ONH] data, discrimination was reduced and ranged from poor to fair (0.69 [0.62, 0.77] to 0.74 [0.67, 0.81]). OCT default ONH measurements overall did not significantly contribute to model performance. Class activation maps (CAMs) highlighted that the paravascular arcades were regions of interest. The findings suggest that individuals with migraines demonstrate microvascular differences more so than neuronal differences in comparison to individuals without migraines.

The Neural Network Field Theory correspondence (NNFT) is a mapping from neural network (NN) architectures into the space of statistical field theories (SFTs). The Bayesian renormalization group (BRG) is an information-theoretic coarse graining scheme that generalizes the principles of the exact renormalization group (ERG) to arbitrarily parameterized probability distributions, including those of NNs. In BRG, coarse graining is performed in parameter space with respect to an information-theoretic distinguishability scale set by the Fisher information metric. In this paper, we unify NNFT and BRG to form a powerful new framework for exploring the space of NNs and SFTs, which we coin BRG-NNFT. With BRG-NNFT, NN training dynamics can be interpreted as inducing a flow in the space of SFTs from the information-theoretic `IR' $\rightarrow$ `UV'. Conversely, applying an information-shell coarse graining to the trained network's parameters induces a flow in the space of SFTs from the information-theoretic `UV' $\rightarrow$ `IR'. When the information-theoretic cutoff scale coincides with a standard momentum scale, BRG is equivalent to ERG. We demonstrate the BRG-NNFT correspondence on two analytically tractable examples. First, we construct BRG flows for trained, infinite-width NNs, of arbitrary depth, with generic activation functions. As a special case, we then restrict to architectures with a single infinitely-wide layer, scalar outputs, and generalized cos-net activations. In this case, we show that BRG coarse-graining corresponds exactly to the momentum-shell ERG flow of a free scalar SFT. We prove that the image of the total power operation for Burnside rings $A(G) \to A(G\wr\Sigma_n)$ lies inside a relatively small, combinatorial subring $\mathring A(G,n) \subseteq A(G \wr \Sigma_n)$. As $n$ varies, the subrings $\mathring A(G,n)$ assemble into a commutative graded ring $\mathring A(G)$ with a universal property: $\mathring A(G)$ carries the universal family of power operations out of $A(G)$. We construct character maps for $\mathring A(G,n)$ and give a formula for the character of the total power operation. Using $\mathring A(G)$, we extend the Frobenius--Wielandt homomorphism of Dress--Siebeneicher--Yoshida to wreath products compatibly with the total power operation. Finally, we prove a generalization of Burnside's orbit counting lemma that describes the transfer map $A(G \wr \Sigma_n) \to A(\Sigma_n)$ on the subring $\mathring A(G,n)$.

The field of digital mental health is advancing at a rapid pace. Passively collected data from user engagements with digital tools and services continue to contribute new insights into mental health and illness. As the field of digital mental health grows, a concerning norm has been established -- digital service users are given little say over how their data is collected, shared, or used to generate revenue for private companies. Given a long history of service user exclusion from data collection practices, we propose an alternative approach that is attentive to this history: the consent-forward paradigm. This paradigm embeds principles of affirmative consent in the design of digital mental health tools and services, strengthening trust through designing around individual choices and needs, and proactively protecting users from unexpected harm. Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) play a crucial role in the architectural configuration and training of Artificial Deep Neural Networks (DNNs), a process known as neuroevolution. However, neuroevolution is hindered by its inherent computational expense, requiring multiple generations, a large population, and numerous epochs. The most computationally intensive aspect lies in evaluating the fitness function of a single candidate solution. To address this challenge, we employ Surrogate-assisted EAs (SAEAs). While a few SAEAs approaches have been proposed in neuroevolution, none have been applied to truly large DNNs due to issues like intractable information usage. In this work, drawing inspiration from Genetic Programming semantics, we use phenotypic distance vectors, outputted from DNNs, alongside Kriging Partial Least Squares (KPLS), an approach that is effective in handling these large vectors, making them suitable for search. Our proposed approach, named Neuro-Linear Genetic Programming surrogate model (NeuroLGP-SM), efficiently and accurately estimates DNN fitness without the need for complete evaluations. NeuroLGP-SM demonstrates competitive or superior results compared to 12 other methods, including NeuroLGP without SM, convolutional neural networks, support vector machines, and autoencoders. Additionally, it is worth noting that NeuroLGP-SM is 25% more energy-efficient than its NeuroLGP counterpart. We present Cloudy modeling of infrared emission lines in the Wolf-Rayet (WR) nebula N76 caused by one of the most luminous and hottest WR stars in the low metallicity Small Magellanic Cloud. We use spatially resolved mid-infrared Spitzer/IRS and far-infrared Herschel/PACS spectroscopy to establish the physical conditions of the ionized gas. The spatially resolved distribution of the emission allows us to constrain properties much more accurately than using spatially integrated quantities. We construct models with a range of constant hydrogen densities between n$_H$ = 4 - 10 cm$^{-3}$ and a stellar wind-blown cavity of 10 pc which reproduces the intensity and shape of most ionized gas emission lines, including the high ionization lines [OIV] and [NeV], as well as [SIII], [SIV], [OIII], and [NeIII]. Our models suggest that the majority of [SiII] emission (91%) is produced at the edge of the HII region around the transition between ionized and atomic gas while very little of the [CII] emission (<5%) is associated with the ionized gas. The physical conditions of N76 are characterized by a hot HII region with a maximum electron temperature of T$_e$ ~ 24,000 K, electron densities that range from n$_e$ ~ 4 to 12 cm$^{-3}$, and high ionization parameters of log(U) ~ -1.15 to -1.77. By analyzing a low metallicty WR nebula with a single ionization source, this work gives valuable insights on the impact WR stars have to the galaxy-integrated ionized gas properties in nearby dwarf galaxies., Comment: 27 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables. Evolutionary algorithms are increasingly recognised as a viable computational approach for the automated optimisation of deep neural networks (DNNs) within artificial intelligence. This method extends to the training of DNNs, an approach known as neuroevolution. However, neuroevolution is an inherently resource-intensive process, with certain studies reporting the consumption of thousands of GPU days for refining and training a single DNN network. To address the computational challenges associated with neuroevolution while still attaining good DNN accuracy, surrogate models emerge as a pragmatic solution. Despite their potential, the integration of surrogate models into neuroevolution is still in its early stages, hindered by factors such as the effective use of high-dimensional data and the representation employed in neuroevolution. In this context, we address these challenges by employing a suitable representation based on Linear Genetic Programming, denoted as NeuroLGP, and leveraging Kriging Partial Least Squares. The amalgamation of these two techniques culminates in our proposed methodology known as the NeuroLGP-Surrogate Model (NeuroLGP-SM). For comparison purposes, we also code and use a baseline approach incorporating a repair mechanism, a common practice in neuroevolution. Notably, the baseline approach surpasses the renowned VGG-16 model in accuracy. Given the computational intensity inherent in DNN operations, a singular run is typically the norm. To evaluate the efficacy of our proposed approach, we conducted 96 independent runs. Significantly, our methodologies consistently outperform the baseline, with the SM model demonstrating superior accuracy or comparable results to the NeuroLGP approach. We present details on a new measurement of the muon magnetic anomaly, $a_\mu = (g_\mu -2)/2$. The result is based on positive muon data taken at Fermilab's Muon Campus during the 2019 and 2020 accelerator runs. The measurement uses $3.1$ GeV$/c$ polarized muons stored in a $7.1$-m-radius storage ring with a $1.45$ T uniform magnetic field. The value of $ a_{\mu}$ is determined from the measured difference between the muon spin precession frequency and its cyclotron frequency. This difference is normalized to the strength of the magnetic field, measured using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). The ratio is then corrected for small contributions from beam motion, beam dispersion, and transient magnetic fields. We measure $a_\mu = 116 592 057 (25) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.21 ppm). This is the world's most precise measurement of this quantity and represents a factor of $2.2$ improvement over our previous result based on the 2018 dataset. In combination, the two datasets yield $a_\mu(\text{FNAL}) = 116 592 055 (24) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.20 ppm). This paper investigates the use of probabilistic neural networks (PNNs) to model aleatoric uncertainty, which refers to the inherent variability in the input-output relationships of a system, often characterized by unequal variance or heteroscedasticity. Unlike traditional neural networks that produce deterministic outputs, PNNs generate probability distributions for the target variable, allowing the determination of both predicted means and intervals in regression scenarios. Contributions of this paper include the development of a probabilistic distance metric to optimize PNN architecture, and the deployment of PNNs in controlled data sets as well as a practical material science case involving fiber-reinforced composites. The findings confirm that PNNs effectively model aleatoric uncertainty, proving to be more appropriate than the commonly employed Gaussian process regression for this purpose. Specifically, in a real-world scientific machine learning context, PNNs yield remarkably accurate output mean estimates with R-squared scores approaching 0.97, and their predicted intervals exhibit a high correlation coefficient of nearly 0.80, closely matching observed data intervals. We compute the rational homotopy groups of the $K(n)$-local sphere for all heights $n$ and all primes $p$, verifying a prediction that goes back to the pioneering work of Morava in the early 1970s. More precisely, we show that the inclusion of the Witt vectors into the Lubin-Tate ring induces a split injection on continuous stabilizer cohomology with torsion cokernel of bounded exponent, thereby proving Hopkins' chromatic splitting conjecture and the vanishing conjecture of Beaudry-Goerss-Henn rationally. In this paper we present a novel approach to interpretable AI inspired by Quantum Field Theory (QFT) which we call the NCoder. The NCoder is a modified autoencoder neural network whose latent layer is prescribed to be a subset of $n$-point correlation functions. Regarding images as draws from a lattice field theory, this architecture mimics the task of perturbatively constructing the effective action of the theory order by order in an expansion using Feynman diagrams. Alternatively, the NCoder may be regarded as simulating the procedure of statistical inference whereby high dimensional data is first summarized in terms of several lower dimensional summary statistics (here the $n$-point correlation functions), and subsequent out-of-sample data is generated by inferring the data generating distribution from these statistics. In this way the NCoder suggests a fascinating correspondence between perturbative renormalizability and the sufficiency of models. This paper introduces a novel two-stage machine learning-based surrogate modeling framework to address inverse problems in scientific and engineering fields. In the first stage of the proposed framework, a machine learning model termed the "learner" identifies a limited set of candidates within the input design space whose predicted outputs closely align with desired outcomes. Subsequently, in the second stage, a separate surrogate model, functioning as an "evaluator," is employed to assess the reduced candidate space generated in the first stage. This evaluation process eliminates inaccurate and uncertain solutions, guided by a user-defined coverage level. The framework's distinctive contribution is the integration of conformal inference, providing a versatile and efficient approach that can be widely applicable. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework compared to conventional single-stage inverse problems, we conduct several benchmark tests and investigate an engineering application focused on the micromechanical modeling of fiber-reinforced composites. The results affirm the superiority of our proposed framework, as it consistently produces more reliable solutions. Koll\'ar proved that a very general $n$-dimensional complex hypersurface of degree at least $3\lceil (n+3)/4\rceil$ is not birational to a fibration in rational curves. This is most interesting when the hypersurface is Fano, in which case it is covered by rational curves. In this paper, we extend Koll\'ar's ideas and show that for any genus $g$, there are Fano hypersurfaces (in more restrictive degree and dimension ranges) that are not birational to fibrations in genus $g$ curves. In other words, we show that the fibering genus of these hypersurfaces can be arbitrarily large. The fibering genus of a variety has been studied in work of Konno, Ein--Lazarsfeld, and Voisin, but this is the first paper to explore these ideas in the Fano range. Following Koll\'ar, we degenerate to characteristic $p>0$ to rule out these fibrations. We present a new measurement of the positive muon magnetic anomaly, $a_\mu \equiv (g_\mu - 2)/2$, from the Fermilab Muon $g\!-\!2$ Experiment using data collected in 2019 and 2020. We have analyzed more than 4 times the number of positrons from muon decay than in our previous result from 2018 data. The systematic error is reduced by more than a factor of 2 due to better running conditions, a more stable beam, and improved knowledge of the magnetic field weighted by the muon distribution, $\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p$, and of the anomalous precession frequency corrected for beam dynamics effects, $\omega_a$. From the ratio $\omega_a / \tilde{\omega}'^{}_p$, together with precisely determined external parameters, we determine $a_\mu = 116\,592\,057(25) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.21 ppm). Combining this result with our previous result from the 2018 data, we obtain $a_\mu\text{(FNAL)} = 116\,592\,055(24) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.20 ppm). The purpose of this paper is to compute the minimal fibering degree of an arbitrary projective toric variety. We prove that it equals the lattice width of the associated polytope. This gives a complete answer to a question asked in a recent paper of Levinson, Ullery and the second author. The minimal fibering degree of a polarized projective variety was introduced in that paper in order to compute the degree of irrationality (a generalization of gonality) of high degree divisors. From this perspective, our paper gives a higher dimensional analogue of results of Kawaguchi and others who computed the gonality of curves in toric surfaces in terms of lattice widths., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

Machine learning has rapidly evolved during the last decade, achieving expert human performance on notoriously challenging problems such as image classification. This success is partly due to the re-emergence of bio-inspired modern artificial neural networks (ANNs) along with the availability of computation power, vast labelled data and ingenious human-based expert knowledge as well as optimisation approaches that can find the correct configuration (and weights) for these networks. Neuroevolution is a term used for the latter when employing evolutionary algorithms. Most of the works in neuroevolution have focused their attention in a single type of ANNs, named Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). Moreover, most of these works have used a single optimisation approach. This work makes a progressive step forward in neuroevolution for vehicle trajectory prediction, referred to as neurotrajectory prediction, where multiple objectives must be considered. To this end, rich ANNs composed of CNNs and Long-short Term Memory Network are adopted. Two well-known and robust Evolutionary Multi-objective Optimisation (EMO) algorithms, NSGA-II and MOEA/D are also adopted. The completely different underlying mechanism of each of these algorithms sheds light on the implications of using one over the other EMO approach in neurotrajectory prediction. In particular, the importance of considering objective scaling is highlighted, finding that MOEA/D can be more adept at focusing on specific objectives whereas, NSGA-II tends to be more invariant to objective scaling. Additionally, certain objectives are shown to be either beneficial or detrimental to finding valid models, for instance, inclusion of a distance feedback objective was considerably detrimental to finding valid models, while a lateral velocity objective was more beneficial., Comment: 38 pages, 6 Figure, 10 Tables

We study the conformal bootstrap of 1D CFTs on the straight Maldacena-Wilson line in 4D ${\cal N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory. We introduce an improved truncation scheme with an 'OPE tail' approximation and use it to reproduce the 'bootstrability' results of Cavagli\`a et al. for the OPE-coefficients squared of the first three unprotected operators. For example, for the first OPE-coefficient squared at 't Hooft coupling $(4\pi)^2$, linear-functional methods with two sum rules from integrated correlators give the rigorous result $0.294014873 \pm 4.88 \cdot 10^{-8}$, whereas our methods give with machine-precision computations $0.294014228 \pm 6.77 \cdot 10^{-7}$. Large generative AI models (GMs) like GPT and DALL-E are trained to generate content for general, wide-ranging purposes. GM content filters are generalized to filter out content which has a risk of harm in many cases, e.g., hate speech. However, prohibited content is not always harmful -- there are instances where generating prohibited content can be beneficial. So, when GMs filter out content, they preclude beneficial use cases along with harmful ones. Which use cases are precluded reflects the values embedded in GM content filtering. Recent work on red teaming proposes methods to bypass GM content filters to generate harmful content. We coin the term green teaming to describe methods of bypassing GM content filters to design for beneficial use cases. We showcase green teaming by: 1) Using ChatGPT as a virtual patient to simulate a person experiencing suicidal ideation, for suicide support training; 2) Using Codex to intentionally generate buggy solutions to train students on debugging; and 3) Examining an Instagram page using Midjourney to generate images of anti-LGBTQ+ politicians in drag. Finally, we discuss how our use cases demonstrate green teaming as both a practical design method and a mode of critique, which problematizes and subverts current understandings of harms and values in generative AI.

In this note we present a fully information theoretic approach to renormalization inspired by Bayesian statistical inference, which we refer to as Bayesian Renormalization. The main insight of Bayesian Renormalization is that the Fisher metric defines a correlation length that plays the role of an emergent RG scale quantifying the distinguishability between nearby points in the space of probability distributions. This RG scale can be interpreted as a proxy for the maximum number of unique observations that can be made about a given system during a statistical inference experiment. The role of the Bayesian Renormalization scheme is subsequently to prepare an effective model for a given system up to a precision which is bounded by the aforementioned scale. In applications of Bayesian Renormalization to physical systems, the emergent information theoretic scale is naturally identified with the maximum energy that can be probed by current experimental apparatus, and thus Bayesian Renormalization coincides with ordinary renormalization. However, Bayesian Renormalization is sufficiently general to apply even in circumstances in which an immediate physical scale is absent, and thus provides an ideal approach to renormalization in data science contexts. To this end, we provide insight into how the Bayesian Renormalization scheme relates to existing methods for data compression and data generation such as the information bottleneck and the diffusion learning paradigm. We conclude by designing an explicit form of Bayesian Renormalization inspired by Wilson's momentum shell renormalization scheme in Quantum Field Theory. We apply this Bayesian Renormalization scheme to a simple Neural Network and verify the sense in which it organizes the parameters of the model according to a hierarchy of information theoretic importance., Comment: 20 pages, no figures. Surrogate-assisted evolutionary algorithms (SAEAs) aim to use efficient computational models with the goal of approximating the fitness function in evolutionary computation systems. This area of research has been active for over two decades and has received significant attention from the specialised research community in different areas, for example, single and many objective optimisation or dynamic and stationary optimisation problems. An emergent and exciting area that has received little attention from the SAEAs community is in neuroevolution. This refers to the use of evolutionary algorithms in the automatic configuration of artificial neural network (ANN) architectures, hyper-parameters and/or the training of ANNs. However, ANNs suffer from two major issues: (a) the use of highly-intense computational power for their correct training, and (b) the highly specialised human expertise required to correctly configure ANNs necessary to get a well-performing network. This work aims to fill this important research gap in SAEAs in neuroevolution by addressing these two issues. We demonstrate how one can use a Kriging Partial Least Squares method that allows efficient computation of good approximate surrogate models compared to the well-known Kriging method, which normally cannot be used in neuroevolution due to the high dimensionality of the data., Comment: 2 pages, 1 table

In this paper we study the degrees of irrationality of hypersurfaces of large degree in a complex projective variety. We show that the maps computing the degrees of irrationality of these hypersurfaces factor through rational fibrations of the ambient variety. As a consequence, we give tight bounds on the degree of irrationality of these hypersurfaces in terms of a new invariant of independent interest: the minimal fibering degree of a projective variety with respect to an effective divisor. As a corollary we show that the degree of irrationality of a complete intersection of sufficiently large and unbalanced degrees is roughly the product of the degrees. This gives a partial answer to a question of Bastianelli, De Poi, Ein, Lazarsfeld, and the third author.

Calculating an Air Quality Index (AQI) typically uses data streams from air quality sensors deployed at fixed locations and the calculation is a real time process. If one or a number of sensors are broken or offline, then the real time AQI value cannot be computed. Estimating AQI values for some point in the future is a predictive process and uses historical AQI values to train and build models. In this work we focus on gap filling in air quality data where the task is to predict the AQI at 1, 5 and 7 days into the future. The scenario is where one or a number of air, weather and traffic sensors are offline and explores prediction accuracy under such situations. For prime degree hypersurfaces of dimension at least 3, Mori asked if every smooth proper limit is still a hypersurface. Interestingly in dimensions 1 and 2, this is not the case. For example, Griffin constructed explicit families of quintic curves that give counterexamples in dimension 1 (Horikawa constructed similar examples for quintics in dimension 2). In this paper we propose a conjecture explaining these examples using Hacking and Prokhorov's work on Q-Gorenstein limits of the projective plane. In particular, if p is a prime number that is not a Markov number, we conjecture that any smooth projective limit of plane curves of degree p is a plane curve. We use the specialization homomorphism for the birational automorphism group to study finite order birational automorphisms. For a family of varieties over a DVR, we prove that a birational automorphism of order coprime to the residue characteristic cannot specialize to the identity. As an application, we show that very general $n$-dimensional hypersurfaces of degree $d \geq 5 \lceil (n+3)/6 \rceil$ have no finite order birational automorphisms., Comment: 10 pages

Semantics is a growing area of research in Genetic programming (GP) and refers to the behavioural output of a Genetic Programming individual when executed. This research expands upon the current understanding of semantics by proposing a new approach: Semantic-based Distance as an additional criteriOn (SDO), in the thus far, somewhat limited researched area of semantics in Multi-objective GP (MOGP). Our work included an expansive analysis of the GP in terms of performance and diversity metrics, using two additional semantic-based approaches, namely Semantic Similarity-based Crossover (SCC) and Semantic-based Crowding Distance (SCD). Each approach is integrated into two evolutionary multi-objective (EMO) frameworks: Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) and the Strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithm 2 (SPEA2), and along with the three semantic approaches, the canonical form of NSGA-II and SPEA2 are rigorously compared. The study of representations is of fundamental importance to any form of communication, and our ability to exploit them effectively is paramount. This article presents a novel theory -- Representational Systems Theory -- that is designed to abstractly encode a wide variety of representations from three core perspectives: syntax, entailment, and their properties. By introducing the concept of a construction space, we are able to encode each of these core components under a single, unifying paradigm. Using our Representational Systems Theory, it becomes possible to structurally transform representations in one system into representations in another. An intrinsic facet of our structural transformation technique is representation selection based on properties that representations possess, such as their relative cognitive effectiveness or structural complexity. A major theoretical barrier to providing general structural transformation techniques is a lack of terminating algorithms. Representational Systems Theory permits the derivation of partial transformations when no terminating algorithm can produce a full transformation. Since Representational Systems Theory provides a universal approach to encoding representational systems, a further key barrier is eliminated: the need to devise system-specific structural transformation algorithms, that are necessary when different systems adopt different formalisation approaches. Child welfare agencies across the United States are turning to data-driven predictive technologies (commonly called predictive analytics) which use government administrative data to assist workers' decision-making. While some prior work has explored impacted stakeholders' concerns with current uses of data-driven predictive risk models (PRMs), less work has asked stakeholders whether such tools ought to be used in the first place. In this work, we conducted a set of seven design workshops with 35 stakeholders who have been impacted by the child welfare system or who work in it to understand their beliefs and concerns around PRMs, and to engage them in imagining new uses of data and technologies in the child welfare system. We found that participants worried current PRMs perpetuate or exacerbate existing problems in child welfare. Participants suggested new ways to use data and data-driven tools to better support impacted communities and suggested paths to mitigate possible harms of these tools. Participants also suggested low-tech or no-tech alternatives to PRMs to address problems in child welfare. The incentive for using Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) for the automated optimization and training of deep neural networks (DNNs), a process referred to as neuroevolution, has gained momentum in recent years. The configuration and training of these networks can be posed as optimization problems. Indeed, most of the recent works on neuroevolution have focused their attention on single-objective optimization. Moreover, from the little research that has been done at the intersection of neuroevolution and evolutionary multi-objective optimization (EMO), all the research that has been carried out has focused predominantly on the use of one type of DNN: convolutional neural networks (CNNs), using well-established standard benchmark problems such as MNIST. In this work, we make a leap in the understanding of these two areas (neuroevolution and EMO), regarded in this work as neuroevolutionary multi-objective, by using and studying a rich DNN composed of a CNN and Long-short Term Memory network. Moreover, we use a robust and challenging vehicle trajectory prediction problem. A deeper understanding of the drivers of evapotranspiration and the modelling of its constituent parts (evaporation and transpiration) could be of significant importance to the monitoring and management of water resources globally over the coming decades. In this work, we developed a framework to identify the best performing machine learning algorithm from a candidate set, select optimal predictive features as well as ranking features in terms of their importance to predictive accuracy. Our experiments used 3 separate feature sets across 4 wetland sites as input into 8 candidate machine learning algorithms, providing 96 sets of experimental configurations. Given this high number of parameters, our results show strong evidence that there is no singularly optimal machine learning algorithm or feature set across all of the wetland sites studied despite their similarities. A key finding discovered when examining feature importance is that methane flux, a feature whose relationship with evapotranspiration is not generally examined, may contribute to further biophysical process understanding.

This is an extended analysis of our paper "How Child Welfare Workers Reduce Racial Disparities in Algorithmic Decisions," which looks at racial disparities in the Allegheny Family Screening Tool, an algorithm used to help child welfare workers decide which families the Allegheny County child welfare agency (CYF) should investigate. On April 27, 2022, Allegheny County CYF sent us an updated dataset and pre-processing steps. In this extended analysis of our paper, we show the results from re-running all quantitative analyses in our paper with this new data and pre-processing. We find that our main findings in our paper were robust to changes in data and pre-processing. Particularly, the Allegheny Family Screening Tool on its own would have made more racially disparate decisions than workers, and workers used the tool to decrease those algorithmic disparities. Some minor results changed, including a slight increase in the screen-in rate from before to after the implementation of the AFST reported our paper.

Motivated by the growing importance of reducing unfairness in ML predictions, Fair-ML researchers have presented an extensive suite of algorithmic 'fairness-enhancing' remedies. Most existing algorithms, however, are agnostic to the sources of the observed unfairness. As a result, the literature currently lacks guiding frameworks to specify conditions under which each algorithmic intervention can potentially alleviate the underpinning cause of unfairness. To close this gap, we scrutinize the underlying biases (e.g., in the training data or design choices) that cause observational unfairness. We present the conceptual idea and a first implementation of a bias-injection sandbox tool to investigate fairness consequences of various biases and assess the effectiveness of algorithmic remedies in the presence of specific types of bias. We call this process the bias(stress)-testing of algorithmic interventions. Unlike existing toolkits, ours provides a controlled environment to counterfactually inject biases in the ML pipeline. This stylized setup offers the distinct capability of testing fairness interventions beyond observational data and against an unbiased benchmark. In particular, we can test whether a given remedy can alleviate the injected bias by comparing the predictions resulting after the intervention in the biased setting with true labels in the unbiased regime-that is, before any bias injection. We illustrate the utility of our toolkit via a proof-of-concept case study on synthetic data. AI-based decision support tools (ADS) are increasingly used to augment human decision-making in high-stakes, social contexts. As public sector agencies begin to adopt ADS, it is critical that we understand workers' experiences with these systems in practice. In this paper, we present findings from a series of interviews and contextual inquiries at a child welfare agency, to understand how they currently make AI-assisted child maltreatment screening decisions. Overall, we observe how workers' reliance upon the ADS is guided by (1) their knowledge of rich, contextual information beyond what the AI model captures, (2) their beliefs about the ADS's capabilities and limitations relative to their own, (3) organizational pressures and incentives around the use of the ADS, and (4) awareness of misalignments between algorithmic predictions and their own decision-making objectives. We investigate how crises alter societies by analyzing the timing and channels of change using a longitudinal multi-wave survey of a representative sample of Americans throughout 2020. This methodology allows us to overcome some of the limitations of previous studies and uncover novel insights: (1) individuals with a negative personal experience during a crisis become more pro-welfare spending, in particular for policies they perceive will benefit them personally, and they become less trusting of institutions; (2) indirect shocks or the mere exposure to the crisis doesn't have a similar effect; (3) policy preferences and institutional trust can change quickly after a negative experience; and (4) consuming partisan media can mitigate or exacerbate these effects by distorting perceptions of reality. In an experiment, we find that exposing individuals to the same information can recalibrate distorted perceptions with lasting effects. Using a machine learning model to test for heterogeneous treatment effects, we find a negative personal experience did not make individuals more responsive to the information treatment, suggesting that lived and perceived experiences play an equally important role in changing preferences during a crisis.

Determining when the birational automorphism group of a Fano variety is finite is an interesting and difficult problem. The main technique for studying this problem is by the Noether-Fano method. This method has been effective in studying this problem for Fano varieties of index one and two. The purpose of this paper is to give a new approach to this problem, and to show that in every positive characteristic there are Fano varieties of arbitrarily large index with finite (or even trivial) birational automorphisms. To do this we prove that these varieties admit ample and birationally equivariant line bundles. In our previous paper, we constructed and studied a functorial extension of the evaluation map $S^1 \times \mathcal{L}X \to X$ to transfers along finite covers. In this paper, we show that this induces a natural evaluation map on the full subcategory of the homotopy category of spectra consisting of $p$-completed classifying spectra of finite groups. To do this, we leverage the close relationship between this full subcategory and the Burnside category of fusion systems.

We construct and study a functorial extension of the evaluation map $S^1 \times \mathcal{L} X \to X$ to transfers along finite covers. Randomized experiments can be susceptible to selection bias due to potential non-compliance by the participants. While much of the existing work has studied compliance as a static behavior, we propose a game-theoretic model to study compliance as dynamic behavior that may change over time. In rounds, a social planner interacts with a sequence of heterogeneous agents who arrive with their unobserved private type that determines both their prior preferences across the actions (e.g., control and treatment) and their baseline rewards without taking any treatment. The planner provides each agent with a randomized recommendation that may alter their beliefs and their action selection. We develop a novel recommendation mechanism that views the planner's recommendation as a form of instrumental variable (IV) that only affects an agents' action selection, but not the observed rewards. We construct such IVs by carefully mapping the history -- the interactions between the planner and the previous agents -- to a random recommendation. In settings where Machine Learning (ML) algorithms automate or inform consequential decisions about people, individual decision subjects are often incentivized to strategically modify their observable attributes to receive more favorable predictions. As a result, the distribution the assessment rule is trained on may differ from the one it operates on in deployment. While such distribution shifts, in general, can hinder accurate predictions, our work identifies a unique opportunity associated with shifts due to strategic responses: We show that we can use strategic responses effectively to recover causal relationships between the observable features and outcomes we wish to predict, even under the presence of unobserved confounding variables. Specifically, our work establishes a novel connection between strategic responses to ML models and instrumental variable (IV) regression by observing that the sequence of deployed models can be viewed as an instrument that affects agents' observable features but does not directly influence their outcomes. We show that our causal recovery method can be utilized to improve decision-making across several important criteria: individual fairness, agent outcomes, and predictive risk. In particular, we show that if decision subjects differ in their ability to modify non-causal attributes, any decision rule deviating from the causal coefficients can lead to (potentially unbounded) individual-level unfairness., Comment: In the 39th International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML 2022)

Semantics has become a key topic of research in Genetic Programming (GP). Semantics refers to the outputs (behaviour) of a GP individual when this is run on a data set. The majority of works that focus on semantic diversity in single-objective GP indicates that it is highly beneficial in evolutionary search. Surprisingly, there is minuscule research conducted in semantics in Multi-objective GP (MOGP). In this work we make a leap beyond our understanding of semantics in MOGP and propose SDO: Semantic-based Distance as an additional criteriOn. This naturally encourages semantic diversity in MOGP. To do so, we find a pivot in the less dense region of the first Pareto front (most promising front). This is then used to compute a distance between the pivot and every individual in the population. The resulting distance is then used as an additional criterion to be optimised to favour semantic diversity. We also use two other semantic-based methods as baselines, called Semantic Similarity-based Crossover and Semantic-based Crowding Distance. Furthermore, we also use the NSGA-II and the SPEA2 for comparison too. We use highly unbalanced binary classification problems and consistently show how our proposed SDO approach produces more non-dominated solutions and better diversity, leading to better statistically significant results, using the hypervolume results as evaluation measure, compared to the rest of the other four methods., Comment: 30 pages, 4 figures, 10 tables, journal article

We describe the installation, commissioning, and characterization of the new injection kicker system in the Muon $g-2$ Experiment (E989) at Fermilab, which makes a precision measurement of the muon magnetic anomaly. Three Blumlein pulsers drive each of the 1.27-m-long non-ferric kicker magnets, which reside in a storage ring vacuum (SRV) that is subjected to a 1.45 T magnetic field. The new system has been redesigned relative to Muon $g-2$'s predecessor experiment, and we present those details in this manuscript.

The Muon g-2 Experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) has measured the muon anomalous precession frequency $\omega_a$ to an uncertainty of 434 parts per billion (ppb), statistical, and 56 ppb, systematic, with data collected in four storage ring configurations during its first physics run in 2018. When combined with a precision measurement of the magnetic field of the experiment's muon storage ring, the precession frequency measurement determines a muon magnetic anomaly of $a_{\mu}({\rm FNAL}) = 116\,592\,040(54) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.46 ppm). This article describes the multiple techniques employed in the reconstruction, analysis and fitting of the data to measure the precession frequency. The Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory has measured the anomalous precession frequency $a^{}_\mu = (g^{}_\mu-2)/2$ of the muon to a combined precision of 0.46 parts per million with data collected during its first physics run in 2018. This paper documents the measurement of the magnetic field in the muon storage ring. The magnetic field is monitored by nuclear magnetic resonance systems and calibrated in terms of the equivalent proton spin precession frequency in a spherical water sample at 34.7$^\circ$C. The measured field is weighted by the muon distribution resulting in $\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p$, the denominator in the ratio $\omega^{}_a$/$\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p$ that together with known fundamental constants yields $a^{}_\mu$. The reported uncertainty on $\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p$ for the Run-1 data set is 114 ppb consisting of uncertainty contributions from frequency extraction, calibration, mapping, tracking, and averaging of 56 ppb, and contributions from fast transient fields of 99 ppb., Comment: Added one citation and corrected missing normalization in Eqs (35) and (36)

We present the first results of the Fermilab Muon g-2 Experiment for the positive muon magnetic anomaly $a_\mu \equiv (g_\mu-2)/2$. The anomaly is determined from the precision measurements of two angular frequencies. Intensity variation of high-energy positrons from muon decays directly encodes the difference frequency $\omega_a$ between the spin-precession and cyclotron frequencies for polarized muons in a magnetic storage ring. The storage ring magnetic field is measured using nuclear magnetic resonance probes calibrated in terms of the equivalent proton spin precession frequency ${\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p}$ in a spherical water sample at 34.7$^{\circ}$C. The ratio $\omega_a / {\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p}$, together with known fundamental constants, determines $a_\mu({\rm FNAL}) = 116\,592\,040(54)\times 10^{-11}$ (0.46\,ppm). The result is 3.3 standard deviations greater than the standard model prediction and is in excellent agreement with the previous Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) E821 measurement. After combination with previous measurements of both $\mu^+$ and $\mu^-$, the new experimental average of $a_\mu({\rm Exp}) = 116\,592\,061(41)\times 10^{-11}$ (0.35\,ppm) increases the tension between experiment and theory to 4.2 standard deviations, Comment: 10 pages; 4 figures

This paper presents the beam dynamics systematic corrections and their uncertainties for the Run-1 data set of the Fermilab Muon g-2 Experiment. Two corrections to the measured muon precession frequency $\omega_a^m$ are associated with well-known effects owing to the use of electrostatic quadrupole (ESQ) vertical focusing in the storage ring. An average vertically oriented motional magnetic field is felt by relativistic muons passing transversely through the radial electric field components created by the ESQ system. The correction depends on the stored momentum distribution and the tunes of the ring, which has relatively weak vertical focusing. Vertical betatron motions imply that the muons do not orbit the ring in a plane exactly orthogonal to the vertical magnetic field direction. A correction is necessary to account for an average pitch angle associated with their trajectories. A third small correction is necessary because muons that escape the ring during the storage time are slightly biased in initial spin phase compared to the parent distribution. Finally, because two high-voltage resistors in the ESQ network had longer than designed RC time constants, the vertical and horizontal centroids and envelopes of the stored muon beam drifted slightly, but coherently, during each storage ring fill. This led to the discovery of an important phase-acceptance relationship that requires a correction. The sum of the corrections to $\omega_a^m$ is 0.50 $\pm$ 0.09 ppm; the uncertainty is small compared to the 0.43 ppm statistical precision of $\omega_a^m$., Comment: 35 pages, 29 figures. We show that the degrees of rational endomorphisms of very general complex Fano and Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces satisfy certain congruence conditions by specializing to characteristic p. As a corollary we show that very general n-dimensional hypersurfaces of degree $d\ge 5\lceil (n+3)/6\rceil$ are not birational to elliptic fibrations. Semantic diversity in Genetic Programming has proved to be highly beneficial in evolutionary search. We have witnessed a surge in the number of scientific works in the area, starting first in discrete spaces and moving then to continuous spaces. The vast majority of these works, however, have focused their attention on single-objective genetic programming paradigms, with a few exceptions focusing on Evolutionary Multi-objective Optimization (EMO). The latter works have used well-known robust algorithms, including the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II and the Strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithm, both heavily influenced by the notion of Pareto dominance. These inspiring works led us to make a step forward in EMO by considering Multi-objective Evolutionary Algorithms Based on Decomposition (MOEA/D).
