Search

We present the results of a nation-wide baseline survey, conducted by us, for the status of Astronomy education among secondary school students in India. The survey was administered in 10 different languages to over 2000 students from diverse backgrounds, and it explored multiple facets of their perspectives on astronomy. The topics included students' views on the incorporation of astronomy in curricula, their grasp of fundamental astronomical concepts, access to educational resources, cultural connections to astronomy, and their levels of interest and aspirations in the subject. We find notable deficiencies in students' knowledge of basic astronomical principles, with only a minority demonstrating proficiency in key areas such as celestial sizes, distances, and lunar phases. Furthermore, access to resources such as telescopes and planetariums remain limited across the country. Despite these challenges, a significant majority of students expressed a keen interest in astronomy. We further analyze the data along socioeconomic and gender lines. Particularly striking were the socioeconomic disparities, with students from resource-poor backgrounds often having lower levels of access and proficiency. Some differences were observed between genders, although not very pronounced. The Pulsar timing data from NANOGrav Collaboration has regenerated interest in the possibility of observing stochastic gravitational wave background arising from cosmic strings. In the standard theory, the cosmic string network forms during spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) phase transition in the whole universe via the so called Kibble mechanism. This scenario would not be possible, e.g., in models of low energy inflation, where the reheat temperature is much lower than the energy scale of cosmic strings. We point out a very different possibility, where a network of even high energy scale cosmic strings can form when the temperature of the Universe is much lower. We consider local heating of plasma in the early universe by evaporating primordial black holes (PBHs). It is known that for suitable masses of PBHs, their Hawking radiation may re-heat the surrounding plasma to high temperatures, restoring certain symmetries {\it locally} which are broken at the ambient temperature at that stage. Expansion of the hot plasma cools it so that the {\it locally restored symmetry} is spontaneously broken again. If this SSB supports formation of cosmic strings, then string loops will form in this region around the PBH. Further, resulting temperature gradients lead to pressure gradients such that plasma develops radial flow with the string loops getting stretched as they get dragged by the flow. For a finite density of PBHs of suitable masses, one will get local hot spots, each one contributing to expanding cosmic string loops. For suitable PBH density, the loops from different regions may intersect. It is believed that the core of a neutron star can be host to various novel phases of matter, from nucleon superfluid phase to exotic high baryon density quantum chromodynamics (QCD) phases. Different observational signals for such phase transitions have been discussed in the literature. Here, we point out a unique phenomenon associated with phase transition to a superfluid phase, which may be the nucleon superfluid phase or a phase like the CFL phase, allowing for superfluid vortices. In any superfluid phase transition, a random network of vortices forms via the so-called Kibble-Zurek mechanism, which eventually mostly decays away, finally leaving primarily vortices arising from the initial angular momentum of the core. This transient, random vortex network can have a non-zero net angular momentum for the superfluid component, which will generally be oriented in an arbitrary direction. This is in contrast to the final vortices, which arise from initial rotation and hence have the initial angular momentum of the neutron star. The angular momentum of the random vortex network is balanced by an equal and opposite angular momentum in the normal fluid due to the conservation of angular momentum, thereby imparting an arbitrarily oriented angular momentum component to the outer shell of the neutron star. This will affect the pulse timing and pulse profile of a pulsar. These changes in the pulses will decay away in a characteristic manner such that the random vortex network decays, obeying specific scaling laws leading to universal features for the detection of superfluid transitions occurring in a pulsar core., Comment: 9 pages, no figures

It is believed that cores of neutron stars provide a natural laboratory where exotic high baryon density QCD phases may exist.The theoretically well established {\it neutron superfluid phase} is also believed to be found only inside neutron stars. Focus on neutron stars has intensified in recent years with the direct detection of gravitational waves (GWs) from binary neutron star (BNS) merger, which has allowed the possibility of directly probing the properties of the interior of a neutron star. A remarkable phenomenon manifested by rapidly rotating neutron stars is in their {\it avatar} as {\it Pulsars}. The accuracy of pulsar timing allowed the first indirect detection of GWs from a BNS system and opened up a few exciting possibilities. Any pulsar deformation, even if incredibly tiny, can leave imprints on the pulses by introducing tiny perturbations of the moment of inertia (MI) tensor components. While the diagonal MI components of the perturbed MI tensor affect the pulse timings, the off-diagonal components lead to the pulsar's wobbling and affecting the pulse profile. This opens up an opportunity to explore various phase transitions inside a pulsar core by induced density fluctuations through the observable effects on the pulse timing and profile. Such perturbations also naturally induce a rapidly changing quadrupole moment of the star, thereby providing a new source of GW emission. Another remarkable possibility arises when we consider the effect of an external GW on a neutron star. With the possibility of detecting any minute changes in its configuration through pulse observations, the neutron star has the potential to perform as a Weber detector of GWs. Acoustic black holes are formed when a fluid flowing with subsonic velocities, accelerates and becomes supersonic. When the flow is directed from the subsonic to supersonic region, the surface on which the normal component of fluid velocity equals the local speed of sound acts as an acoustic horizon. This is because no acoustic perturbation from the supersonic region can cross it to reach the subsonic part of the fluid. One can show that if the fluid velocity is locally irrotational, the field equations for acoustic perturbations of the velocity potential are identical to that of a massless scalar field propagating in a black hole background. One, therefore, expects Hawking radiation in the form of a thermal spectrum of phonons. There have been numerous investigations of this possibility, theoretically, as well as experimentally, in systems ranging from cold atom systems to quark-gluon plasma formed in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Here we investigate this possibility in the hydrodynamic flow of electrons. Resulting Hawking radiation in this case should be observable in terms of current fluctuations. We propose a novel technique to probe shape of a single microbe embedded in a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) sample by observing geometry of dark brushes with optical microscope using a cross-polarizer set up. Assuming certain anchoring conditions for the NLC director at the surface of the microbe, we determine the resulting shapes of brushes using numerical simulations. Our results suggest that for asymmetrical microbes (such as cylindrical shaped bacteria/viruses), resulting brushes may carry the imprints of this asymmetry (e.g. the aspect ratio of cylindrical shape) at relatively large distances to be able to be seen using simple optical microscopy even for microbe sizes in few tens to few hundred nanometer range., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, final published version

We calculate detailed modification of pulses from a pulsar arising from the effects of phase transition induced density fluctuations on the pulsar moment of inertia. We represent general statistical density fluctuations using a simple model where the initial moment of inertia tensor of the pulsar (taken to be diagonal here) is assumed to get random additional contributions for each of its component which are taken to be Gaussian distributed with certain width characterized by the strength of density fluctuations $\epsilon$. Using sample values of $\epsilon$, (and the pulsar deformation parameter $\eta$) we numerically calculate detailed pulse modifications by solving Euler's equations for the rotational dynamics of the pulsar. We also give analytical estimates which can be used for arbitrary values of $\epsilon$ and $\eta$. We show that there are very specific patterns in the perturbed pulses which are observable in terms of modulations of pulses over large time periods. In view of the fact that density fluctuations fade away eventually leading to a uniform phase in the interior of pulsar, the off-diagonal components of MI tensor also vanish eventually. Thus, the modification of pulses due to induced wobbling (from the off-diagonal MI components) will also die away eventually. This allows one to distinguish these transient pulse modulations from the effects of any wobbling originally present. We propose a new analogue model of gravity - the evolving quark gluon plasma (QGP) produced in relativistic heavy ion collisions. This quark gluon plasma is the "most inviscid" fluid known. Such low kinematic viscosity is believed to reflect strongly correlated nature for QGP in these experiments. Hence, it may provide a good example of a quantum fluid naturally suited to studies of acoustic Hawking radiation. Due to rapid longitudinal expansion, presence of a sonic horizon is also naturally guaranteed here, though, in general, this horizon is not static. Using Ultra relativistic quantum molecular dynamics (UrQMD) simulations, we show that, under certain conditions, the longitudinal velocity of the plasma, near the sonic horizon, can become time independent for a short span during the evolution of the system. During this period, we can have a conformally static acoustic metric with a (conformal) Killing horizon coinciding with the apparent horizon. An asymptotic observer will then see a thermal flux of phonons, constituting the Hawking radiation, coming from the horizon. For the relatively low energy collision considered here, where the resulting QCD system is governed by non-relativistic hydrodynamics, we estimate the Hawking temperature to be about 4-5 MeV (with the temperature of the QCD fluid being about 135 MeV). We discuss the experimental signatures of this Hawking radiation in terms of a thermal component in the rapidity dependence of the transverse momentum distribution of detected particles. Flow has emerged as a crucial probe for the properties of the thermalized medium produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The evolution of initial state fluctuations leaves imprints on the power spectrum of flow coefficients. Therefore flow coefficients are a crucial probe of initial state fluctuations arising from the parton distributions of the colliding nuclei. This has a very strong correspondence with the physics of power spectrum of cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR) anisotropies which directly probes initial inflationary fluctuations. Much work has been done to probe these interesting interconnections, in particular, in developing techniques for the measurements of higher flow coefficients. We present a short review of these developments. The effect of initial magnetic field on these features will also be reviewed. By now many gravitational wave (GW) signals have been detected by LIGO and Virgo, with the waves reaching earth directly from their respective sources. These waves will also travel to different pulsars and will cause (tiny) transient deformations in the pulsar shape. Some of us have recently shown that the resultant transient change in the pulsar moment of inertia may leave an observable imprint on the pulsar signals as detected on earth, especially at resonance. The pulsars may thus act as remotely stationed Weber gravitational wave detectors. This allows us to revisit the past GW events via pulsars. We give here a list of specific pulsars whose future signals will carry the imprints of past GW events, to be specific we constrain it within 50 years. Some interesting cases are, supernova SN1987A with earliest perturbed signals from pulsars J0709-5923 and B0559-57 expected to reach earth in 2023 and 2024 respectively, Crab supernova, with perturbed signal arrival date from pulsar J1856-3754 in 2057, and GW170814 event with its imprints on the signals on the pulsar J0437-4715 reaching earth between 2035-2043. Even the earliest recorded supernova SN185 event may become observable again via pulsar J0900-3144 with the perturbed pulsar signal reaching us sometime between 2033-2066. Importantly, even though the strength of the signal will depend on the interior properties of the pulsar, the expected dates of signal arrival are completely model independent, depending only on the locations of the source and the relevant pulsar., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, 2 tables

Formation of topological defects during symmetry breaking phase transitions via the {\it Kibble mechanism} is extensively used in systems ranging from condensed matter physics to the early stages of the universe. Kibble mechanism uses topological arguments and predicts equal probabilities for the formation of defects and anti-defects. Certain situations, however, require a net bias in the production of defects (or antidefects) during the transition, for example, superfluid transition in a rotating vessel, or flux tubes formation in a superconducting transition in the presence of external magnetic field. In this paper we present a modified Kibble mechanism for a specific system, $^4$He superfluid transition in a rotating vessel, which can produce the required bias of vortices over antivortices. Our results make distinctive predictions which can be tested in superfluid $^4$He experiments. These results also have important implications for superfluid phase transitions in rotating neutron stars and also for any superfluid phases of QCD arising in the non-central low energy heavy-ion collision experiment due to an overall rotation., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, more explanations added

A gravitational wave passing through a pulsar will lead to a variation in the moment of inertia of the pulsar affecting its rotation. This will affect the extremely accurately measured spin rate of the pulsar as well as its pulse profile (due to induced wobbling depending on the source direction). The effect will be most pronounced at resonance and should be detectable by accurate observations of the pulsar signal. The pulsar, in this sense, acts as a remotely stationed Weber detector of gravitational waves whose signal can be monitored on earth. With possible gravitational wave sources spread around in the universe, pulsars in their neighborhoods can provide us a family of \textit{remote} detectors all of which can be monitored on earth. Even if GW are detected directly by earth based conventional detectors, such pulsar detectors can provide additional information for accurate determination of the source location. This can be of crucial importance for sources which do not emit any other form of radiation such as black hole mergers. For the gravitational wave events already detected by LIGO (and Virgo), our proposal suggests that one should look for specific pulsars which would have been disturbed by these events, and will transmit this disturbance via their pulse signals in any foreseeable future. We discuss the issue of setting appropriate initial conditions for inflation. Specifically, we consider natural inflation model and discuss the fine tuning required for setting almost homogeneous initial conditions over a region of order several times the Hubble size which is orders of magnitude larger than any relevant correlation length for field fluctuations. We then propose to use the special propagating front solutions of reaction-diffusion equations for localized field domains of smaller sizes. Due to very small velocities of these propagating fronts we find that the inflaton field in such a ${\it field domain}$ changes very slowly, contrary to naive expectation of rapid roll down to the true vacuum. Continued expansion leads to the energy density in the Hubble region being dominated by the vacuum energy, thereby beginning the inflationary phase. Our results show that inflation can occur even with a single localized field domain of size smaller than the Hubble size. Very strong magnetic fields can arise in non-central heavy-ion collisions at ultrarelativistic energies, which may not decay quickly in a conducting plasma. We carry out relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (RMHD) simulations to study the effects of this magnetic field on the evolution of the plasma and on resulting flow fluctuations in the ideal RMHD limit. Our results show that magnetic field leads to enhancement in elliptic flow for small impact parameters while it suppresses it for large impact parameters (which may provide a signal for initial stage magnetic field). Interestingly, we find that magnetic field in localized regions can temporarily increase in time as evolving plasma energy density fluctuations lead to reorganization of magnetic flux. This can have important effects on chiral magnetic effect. Magnetic field has non-trivial effects on the power spectrum of flow fluctuations. For very strong magnetic field case one sees a pattern of even-odd difference in the power spectrum of flow coefficients arising from reflection symmetry about the magnetic field direction if initial state fluctuations are not dominant. We discuss the situation of nontrivial magnetic field configurations arising from collision of deformed nuclei and show that it can lead to anomalous elliptic flow. Topological defects arise in a variety of systems, e.g. vortices in superfluid helium to cosmic strings in the early universe. There is an indirect evidence of neutron superfluid vortices from glitches in pulsars. One also expects that topological defects may arise in various high baryon density phases of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), e.g. superfluid topological vortices in the color flavor locked (CFL) phase. Though vastly different in energy/length scales, there are universal features, e.g. in the formation of all these defects. Utilizing this universality, we investigate the possibility of detecting these topological superfluid vortices in laboratory experiments, namely heavy-ion collisions. Using hydrodynamic simulations, we show that vortices can qualitatively affect the power spectrum of flow fluctuations. This can give unambiguous signal for superfluid transition resulting in vortices, allowing for check of defect formation theories in a relativistic quantum field theory system, and the detection of superfluid phases of QCD. We carry out hydrodynamical simulation of the evolution of fluid in relativistic heavy-ion collisions with random initial fluctuations. The time evolution of power spectrum of momentum anisotropies shows very strong correspondence with the physics of cosmic microwave anisotropies as was earlier predicted by some of us. In particular our results demonstrate suppression of superhorizon fluctuations and the correspondence between the location of the first peak in the power spectrum of momentum anisotropies and the length scale of fluctuations and expected freezeout time scale (more precisely, the sound horizon size at freezeout)., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

There are indications of formation of a thermalized medium in high multiplicity pp collisions at LHC energy. It is possible that such a medium may reach high enough energy density/temperature so that a transient stage of quark-gluon plasma, where chiral symmetry is restored, may be achieved. Due to rapid 3-dimensional expansion, the system will quickly cool undergoing spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking transition. We study the dynamics of chiral field, after the symmetry breaking transition, for such an event using reaction-diffusion equation approach which we have recently applied for studying QCD transitions in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We show that the interior of such a rapidly expanding system is likely to lead to the formation of a single large domain of disoriented chiral condensate (DCC) which has been a subject of intensive search in earlier experiments. We argue that large multiplicity pp collisions naturally give rise to required boundary conditions for the existence of slowly propagating front solutions of reaction-diffusion equation with resulting dynamics of chiral field leading to the formation of a large DCC domain., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures

Reaction-diffusion equations with suitable boundary conditions have special propagating solutions which very closely resemble the moving interfaces in a first order transition. We show that the dynamics of chiral order parameter for chiral symmetry breaking transition in heavy-ion collisions, with dissipative dynamics, is governed by one such equation, specifically, the Newell-Whitehead equation. Further, required boundary conditions are automatically satisfied due to the geometry of the collision. The chiral transition is, therefore, completed by a propagating interface, exactly as for a first order transition, even though the transition actually is a crossover for relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Same thing also happens when we consider the initial confinement-deconfinement transition with Polyakov loop order parameter. The resulting equation, again with dissipative dynamics, can then be identified with the reaction-diffusion equation known as the Fitzhugh-Nagumo equation which is used in population genetics. We show that density fluctuations during phase transitions in pulsar cores may have non-trivial effects on pulsar timings, and may also possibly account for glitches and anti-glitches. These density fluctuations invariably lead to non-zero off-diagonal components of the moment of inertia, leading to transient wobbling of star. During the evolution of a pulsar, various phase transitions may occur in its dense interior, such as superfluid transition, as well as transition to various exotic phases of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). We propose a technique which allows to probe these phases and associated transitions by detecting changes in rotation of the star arising from density changes and fluctuations during the transition affecting star's moment of inertia. Our results suggest that these changes may be observable, and may possibly account for glitches and (recently observed) anti-glitches. Accurate measurements of pulsar timing and intensity modulations (arising from wobbling of star due to development of the off-diagonal components of moment of inertia) may be used to pin down the particular phase transition occurring inside the pulsar core. Rapid thermalization in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions leads to fast changing potential between a heavy quark and antiquark from zero temperature potential to the finite temperature one. Time dependent perturbation theory can then be used to calculate the survival probability of the initial quarkonium state. In view of very short time scales of thermalization at RHIC and LHC energies, we calculate the survival probability of $J/\psi$ and $\Upsilon$ using sudden approximation. Our results show that quarkonium decay may be significant even when temperature of QGP remains low enough so that the conventional quarkonium melting due to Debye screening is ineffective., Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures

In this paper, we extend our earlier study of spontaneous CP violating scattering of quarks and anti-quarks from QCD $Z\left(3\right)$ domain walls for the situation when these walls have asymmetric profiles of the Polyakov loop order parameter $l(x)$. Dynamical quarks lead to explicit breaking of $Z(3)$ symmetry, which lifts the degeneracy of the $Z(3)$ vacua arising from spontaneous breaking of the $Z(3)$ symmetry in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) phase. Resulting domain walls have asymmetric profile of $l(x)$ (under reflection $x \rightarrow -x$ for a domain wall centered at the origin). We calculate the background gauge field profile $A_0$ associated with this domain wall profile. Interestingly, even with the asymmetric $l(x)$ profile, quark-antiquark scattering from the corresponding gauge field configuration does not reflect this asymmetry. We show that the expected asymmetry in scattering arises when we include the effect of asymmetric profile of $l(x)$ on the effective mass of quarks and antiquarks and calculate resultant scattering. We discuss a novel mechanism for segregation of baryons and anti-baryons in the quark-gluon plasma phase which can lead to formation of quark and antiquark nuggets in the early universe, irrespective of the order of the quark-hadron phase transition. This happens due to CP violating scattering of quarks and antiquarks from moving $Z(3)$ domain walls. CP violation here is spontaneous in nature and arises from the nontrivial profile of the background gauge field ($A_{0}$ ) between different $Z(3)$ vacua. We study the effect of this spontaneous CP violation on the baryon transport across the collapsing large $Z(3)$ domain walls (which can arise in the context of certain low energy scale inflationary models). Our results show that this CP violation can lead to large concentrations of baryons and anti-baryons in the early universe. In this paper we discuss the possibility of $J/\psi$ disintegration due the $Z(3)$ domain walls that are expected to form in QGP medium. These domain walls give rise to localised color electric field which disintegrates $J/\psi$, on interaction, by changing the color composition and simultaneously exciting it to higher states of $c\bar{c}$ system., Comment: Revised version. 7 pages, 3 figures

We model the initial confinement-deconfinement transition in relativistic heavy-ion collisions as a rapid quench in view of expected rapid thermalization to a QGP state. The transition is studied using the Polyakov loop model, with the initial field configuration (in the confining phase) covering a small neighborhood of the confining vacuum $l \simeq 0$, as appropriate for $T < T_c$. Quench is implemented by evolving this initial configuration with the effective potential at a temperature $T > T_c$. We study the formation of Z(3) domain structure and its evolution during the transition as $l$ rolls down in different directions from the top of the central hill in the effective potential of $l$. When explicit Z(3) symmetry breaking effects (arising from dynamical quark effects) are small, then we find well defined Z(3) domains which coarsen in time. Remarkably, the magnitude plot of $l$ shows vacuum bubble like configurations arising during the quench. This first order transition like behavior occurs even though there is no metastable vacuum separated by a barrier from the true vacuum for the parameter values used. When the initial field configuration everywhere rolls down roughly along the same direction (as will happen with large explicit symmetry breaking) then we do not find such bubble-like configurations. However, in this case we find huge oscillations of $l$ with large length scales. We show that flow anisotropies in relativistic heavy-ion collisions can be analyzed using a certain technique of shape analysis of excursion sets recently proposed by us for CMBR fluctuations to investigate anisotropic expansion history of the universe. The technique analyzes shapes (sizes) of patches above (below) certain threshold value for transverse energy/particle number (the excursion sets) as a function of the azimuthal angle and rapidity. Modeling flow by imparting extra anisotropic momentum to the momentum distribution of particles from HIJING, we compare the resulting distributions for excursion sets at two different azimuthal angles. Angles with maximum difference in the two distributions identify the event plane, and the magnitude of difference in the two distributions relates to the magnitude of momentum anisotropy, i.e. elliptic flow., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We investigate the effects of explicit breaking of Z(3) symmetry due to the presence of dynamical quarks on the formation and evolution of Z(3) walls and associated QGP strings within Polyakov loop model. We carry out numerical simulations of the first order quark-hadron phase transition via bubble nucleation (which may be appropriate, for example, at finite baryon chemical potential) in the context of relativistic heavy-ion collision experiments. Using appropriate shifting of the order parameter in the Polyakov loop effective potential, we calculate the bubble profiles using bounce technique, for the true vacuum as well as for the metastable Z(3) vacua, and estimate the associated nucleation probabilities. These different bubbles are then nucleated and evolved and resulting formation and dynamics of Z(3) walls and QGP strings is studied. We discuss various implications of the existence of these Z(3) interfaces and the QGP strings, especially in view of the effects of the explicit breaking of the Z(3) symmetry on the formation and dynamical evolution of these objects., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, PDFLatex

In this paper, we explore the possibility of spontaneous CP violation in the scattering of quarks and anti-quarks from QCD Z(3) domain walls. The CP violation here arises from the nontrivial profile of the background gauge field $(A_{0})$ between different Z(3) vacua. We calculate the spatial variation of $A_{0}$ across the Z(3) interface from the profile of the Polyakov loop $L(\vec{x})$ for the Z(3) interface and calculate the reflection of quarks and antiquarks using the Dirac equation. This spontaneous CP violation has interesting consequences for the relativistic heavy-ion collision experiments, such as baryon enhancement at high $P_{T}$. It also acts as a source of additional J/$\psi$ suppression. We propose a simple technique to detect any anisotropic expansion stage in the history of the universe starting from the inflationary stage to the surface of last scattering from the CMBR data. We use the property that any anisotropic expansion in the universe would deform the shapes of the primordial density perturbations and this deformation can be detected in a shape analysis of superhorizon fluctuations in CMBR. It is known that the presence of background magnetic field in cosmic plasma distorts the acoustic peaks in CMBR. This primarily results from different types of waves in the plasma with velocities depending on the angle between the magnetic field and the wave vector. We consider the consequences of these effects in relativistic heavy-ion collisions where very strong magnetic fields arise during early stages of the plasma evolution. We show that flow coefficients can be significantly affected by these effects when the magnetic field remains strong during early stages due to strong induced fields in the conducting plasma. We study the dynamics of confinement-deconfinement (C-D) phase transition in the context of relativistic heavy-ion collisions within the framework of effective models for the Polyakov loop order parameter. We study the formation of $Z(3)$ walls and associated strings in the initial transition from the confining (hadronic) phase to the deconfining (QGP) phase via the so called Kibble mechanism. Essential physics of the Kibble mechanism is contained in a sort of domain structure arising after any phase transition which represents random variation of the order parameter at distances beyond the typical correlation length. We implement this domain structure by using the Polyakov loop effective model with a first order phase transition and confine ourselves with temperature/time ranges so that the first order C-D transition proceeds via bubble nucleation, leading to a well defined domain structure. The formation of $Z(3)$ walls and associated strings results from the coalescence of QGP bubbles expanding in the confining background. We investigate the evolution of the $Z(3)$ wall and string network. We also calculate the energy density fluctuations associated with $Z(3)$ wall network and strings which decay away after the temperature drops below the quark-hadron transition temperature during the expansion of QGP. We discuss evolution of these quantities with changing temperature via Bjorken's hydrodynamical model and discuss possible experimental signatures resulting from the presence of $Z(3)$ wall network and associate strings., Comment: 23 pages and 12 figures

Recently we have shown that there are crucial similarities in the physics of cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR) anisotropies and the flow anisotropies in relativistic heavy-ion collision experiments (RHICE). We also argued that, following CMBR anisotropy analysis, a plot of root-mean square values of the flow coefficients, calculated in a lab fixed frame for RHICE, can yield important information about the nature of initial state anisotropies and their evolution. We focus on the initial state spatial anisotropies, originating at the thermalization stage, for central collisions in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We propose that a plot of the root mean square values of the flow coefficients $\sqrt{\bar {v_n^2}} \equiv v_n^{rms}$, calculated in a lab fixed coordinate system, for a large range of $n$, from 1 to about 30, can give non-trivial information about the initial stages of the system and its evolution. We also argue that for all wavelengths $\lambda$ of the anisotropy (at the surface of the plasma region) much larger than the acoustic horizon size $H_s^{fr}$ at the freezeout stage, the resulting values of $v_n^{rms}$ should be suppressed by a factor of order $2H_s^{fr}/\lambda$. With initial flow being zero, we discuss the possibility that the resulting flow could show imprints of coherent oscillations in the plot of $v_n^{rms}$ for sub-horizon modes. For gold-gold collision at 200 GeV, these features are expected to occur for n $\ge$ 5, with $n < 4$ modes showing supression. This has strong similarities with the physics of the anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR) resulting from inflationary density fluctuations in the universe. It seems possible that the statistical fluctuations due to finite multiplicity may not be able to mask such features in the flow data, or, at least a non-trivial overall shape of the plot of $v_n^{rms}$ may be inferred. We present observation of large, expanding string loops forming around a heated wire tip embedded in a nematic liquid crystal sample. Loops expand due to convective stretching. This observation leads to a new insight into phenomena which could occur in the early universe. We show that local heating of plasma in the early universe by evaporating primordial black holes can lead to formation of large, expanding cosmic string loops, just as observed in the liquid crystal experiment. Intercommutation of string loops from neighboring black holes can lead to percolation, thereby forming an infinite string network. We discuss the possibility of generation of baryon inhomogeneities in a quark-gluon plasma phase due to moving Z(3) interfaces. By modeling the dependence of effective mass of the quarks on the Polyakov loop order parameter, we study the reflection of quarks from collapsing Z(3) interfaces and estimate resulting baryon inhomogeneities in the context of the early universe. We argue that in the context of certain low energy scale inflationary models, it is possible that large Z(3) walls arise at the end of the reheating stage. Collapse of such walls could lead to baryon inhomogeneities which may be separated by large distances near the QCD scale. Importantly, the generation of these inhomogeneities is insensitive to the order, or even the existence, of the quark-hadron phase transition. We consider the intersection of N different interfaces interpolating between different $Z_N$ vacua of an SU(N) gauge theory using the Polyakov loop order parameter. Topological arguments show that at such a string-like junction, the order parameter should vanish, implying that the core of this string (i.e. the junction region of all the interfaces) is in the confining phase. Using the effective potential for the Polyakov loop proposed by Pisarski for QCD, we use numerical minimization technique and estimate the energy per unit length of the core of this string to be about 2.7 GeV/fm at a temperature about twice the critical temperature. For the parameters used, the interface tension is obtained to be about 7 GeV/fm$^2$. Lattice simulation of pure gauge theories should be able to investigate properties of these strings. For QCD with quarks, it has been discussed in the literature that this $Z_N$ symmetry may still be meaningful, with quark contributions leading to explicit breaking of this $Z_N$ symmetry. At the quark-hadron transition, when quarks get confined to hadrons, certain orbitally excited states, namely those which have excitation energies above the respective $L = 0$ states of the same order as the transition temperature $T_c$, may form easily because of thermal velocities of quarks at the transition temperature. We propose that the ratio of multiplicities of such excited states to the respective $L = 0$ states can serve as an almost model independent signal for the quark-gluon plasma formation in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. For example, the ratio $R^*$ of multiplicities of $D_{SJ}^{*\pm}(2317)(J^P = 0^+)$ and $D_S^{*\pm}(2112)(J^P = 1^-)$ when plotted with respect to the center of mass energy of the collision $\sqrt{s}$ (or vs. centrality/number of participants), should show a jump at the value of $\sqrt{s}$ beyond which the QGP formation occurs. This should happen irrespective of the shape of the overall plot of $R^*$ vs. $\sqrt{s}$. Recent data from RHIC on $\Lambda^*/\Lambda$ vs. N$_{part}$ for large values of N$_{part}$ may be indicative of such a behavior, though there are large error bars. Formation of topological objects during phase transitions has been discussed extensively in literature. In all these discussions defects and anti-defects form with equal probabilities. In contrast, many physical situations, such as formation of baryons in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at present energies, flux tube formation in superconductors in the presence of external magnetic field, and formation of superfluid vortices in a rotating vessel, require a mechanism which can bias (say) defects over anti-defects. Such a bias can crucially affect defect-anti-defect correlations, apart from its effects on defect density. In this paper we initiate an investigation for the basic mechanism of biased formation of defects. For Skyrmions in 1+1 dimensions, we show that incorporation of a chemical potential term in the effective potential leads to a domain structure where order parameter is spatially varying. We have earlier shown that cosmic strings moving through the plasma at the time of a first order quark-hadron transition in the early universe can generate large scale baryon inhomogeneities. In this paper, we calculate detailed structure of these inhomogeneities at the quark-hadron transition. Our calculations show that the inhomogeneities generated by cosmic string wakes can strongly affect nucleosynthesis calculations. A comparison with observational data suggests that such baryon inhomogeneities should not have existed at the nucleosynthesis epoch. If this disagreement holds with more accurate observations, then it will lead to the conclusions that cosmic string formation scales above $10^{14} - 10^{15}$ GeV may not be consistent with nucleosynthesis and CMBR observations. Alternatively, some other input in our calculation should be constrained, for example, if the average string velocity remains sufficiently small so that significant density perturbations are never produced at the QCD scale, or if strings move ultra-relativistically so that string wakes are very thin, trapping negligible amount of baryons. We investigate the dynamics of a first order transition when the order parameter field undergoes resonant oscillations, driven by a periodically varying parameter of the free energy. This parameter could be a background oscillating field as in models of pre-heating after inflation. In the context of condensed matter systems, it could be temperature $T$, or pressure, external electric/magnetic field etc. We show that with suitable driving frequency and amplitude, the system remains in a type of mixed phase, without ever completing transition to the stable phase, even when the oscillating parameter of the free energy remains below the corresponding critical value (for example, with oscillating temperature, $T$ always remains below the critical temperature $T_c$). This phenomenon may have important implications. In cosmology, it will imply prolonged mixed phase in a first order transition due to coupling with background oscillating fields. In condensed matter systems, it will imply that using oscillating temperature (or, more appropriately, pressure waves) one may be able to sustain liquids in a mixed phase indefinitely at low temperatures, without making transition to the frozen phase., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, Expanded version with more details

From the theory of topological defect formation proposed for the early universe, the so called Kibble mechanism, it follows that the density correlation functions of defects and anti-defects in a given system should be completely determined in terms of a single length scale $\xi$, the relevant domain size. Thus, when lengths are expressed in units of $\xi$, these distributions should show universal behavior, depending only on the symmetry of the order parameter, and space dimensions. We have verified this prediction by analyzing the distributions of defects/anti-defects formed in the isotropic-nematic phase transition in a thin layer of nematic liquid crystals. We consider the presence of cosmic string induced density fluctuations in the universe at temperatures below the electroweak phase transition temperature. Resulting temperature fluctuations can restore the electroweak symmetry locally, depending on the amplitude of fluctuations and the background temperature. The symmetry will be spontaneously broken again in a given fluctuation region as the temperature drops there (for fluctuations with length scales smaller than the horizon), resulting in the production of baryon asymmetry. The time scale of the transition will be governed by the wavelength of fluctuation and, hence, can be much smaller than the Hubble time. This leads to strong enhancement in the production of baryon asymmetry for a second order electroweak phase transition as compared to the case when transition happens due to the cooling of the universe via expansion. For a two-Higgs extension of the Standard Model (with appropriate CP violation), we show that one can get the required baryon to entropy ratio if fluctuations propagate without getting significantly damped. If fluctuations are damped rapidly, then a volume factor suppresses the baryon production. Still, the short scale of the fluctuation leads to enhancement of the baryon to entropy ratio by at least 3 - 4 orders of magnitude compared to the conventional case of second order transition where the cooling happens due to expansion of the universe., Comment: 17 pages,1 figure. It is possible that under certain situations, in a relativistic heavy-ion collision, partons may expand out forming a shell like structure. We analyze the process of hadronization in such a picture for the case when the quark-hadron transition is of first order, and argue that the inside region of such a shell must correspond to a supercooled (to $T = 0$) deconfined vacuum. Hadrons from that region escape out, leaving a bubble of pure deconfined vacuum with large vacuum energy. This bubble undergoes relativistic collapse, with highly Lorentz contracted bubble walls, and may concentrate the entire energy into extremely small regions. Eventually different portions of bubble wall collide, with the energy being released in the form of particle production. Thermalization of this system can lead to very high temperatures. With a reasonably conservative set of parameters, at LHC, the temperature of the hot spot can reach as high as 3 GeV, and well above it with more optimistic parameters. Such a hot spot can leave signals like large $P_T$ partons, dileptons, and enhanced production of heavy quarks. We also briefly discuss a speculative possibility where the electroweak symmetry may get restored in the highly dense region resulting from the decay of the bubble wall via the phenomenon of non-thermal symmetry restoration (which is usually employed in models of pre-heating after inflation). Cosmic strings moving through matter produce wakes where density is higher than the background density. We investigate the effects of such wakes occurring at the time of a first order quark-hadron transition in the early universe and show that they can lead to separation of quark-gluon plasma phase in the wake region, while the region outside the wake converts to the hadronic phase. Moving interfaces then trap large baryon densities in sheet like regions which can extend across the entire horizon. Typical separation between such sheets, at formation, is of the order of a km. Regions of baryon inhomogeneity of this nature, i.e. having a planar geometry, and separated by such large distance scales, appear to be well suited for the recent models of inhomogeneous nucleosynthesis to reconcile with the large baryon to photon ratio implied by the recent measurements of the cosmic microwave background power spectrum., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

We discuss the possibility of generating the baryon asymmetry of the Universe when the temperature of the Universe is much below the electroweak scale. In our model the evaporation of primordial black holes or the decay of massive particles re-heats the surrounding plasma to temperatures above the electroweak transition temperature leading to the restoration of electroweak symmetry locally. The symmetry is broken again spontaneously as the plasma cools and a baryon asymmetry is generated during the phase transition. This mechanism generates sufficient asymmetry for a second order electroweak phase transition. For a first order phase transition, sufficient asymmetry is generated if viscous effects slow down the heated plasma as it moves away from the black hole. We describe a novel phenomenon in which vortices are produced due to resonant oscillations of a scalar field which is driven by a periodically varying temperature T, with T remaining much below the critical temperature $T_c$. Also, in a rapid heating of a localized region to a temperature {\it below} $T_c$, far separated vortex and antivortex can form. We compare our results with recent models of defect production during reheating after inflation. We present observations of strength one defects and antidefects formed in isotropic-nematic phase transition in a thin layer of nematic liquid crystals, using a cross-polarizer setup. We measure the widths of the distributions of {\it net} winding number in small regions, and determine the exponent characterizing the correlation between defects and antidefects to be 0.26$\pm$0.11, in very good agreement with the value 1/4 predicted by the Kibble mechanism for defect production. We argue that disoriented chiral condensate (DCC) domains are not well defined for temperatures above the Ginzburg temperature $T_G$ ($\simeq 0.7 T_c$). Above $T_G$, the dynamics of DCC domains is dominated by thermal fluctuations leading to fluctuating orientation of the chiral field in a given domain. It implies that DCC domains may form even in relatively lower energy collisions where the temperature only reaches $T_G$, and never rises to $T_c$. It also means that detection of DCC can not be taken as a signal for an intermediate chirally symmetric phase of matter. We discuss an outside-inside scenario for a first order quark-hadron transition in the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) expected to be produced in heavy ion collisions, wherein the entire QGP region itself becomes like a subcritical bubble, and starts shrinking. We argue that this shrinking QGP bubble will lead to concentration of baryon number in a narrow beam like region in center, which can be detected by HBT analysis, or as a raised plateau in the rapidity plot of baryon number., Comment: 9 pages, Latex, 2 postscript figures

We carry out numerical simulation of the formation of U(1) global vortices in a first order phase transition in 2+1 dimensions in the presence of small explicit symmetry breaking. Bubbles of broken symmetry phase are randomly nucleated, which grow and coalesce. Vortices form at junctions of bubbles via standard Kibble mechanism as well as due to a new mechanism, recently proposed by us, where defect-antidefect pairs are produced due to field oscillations. In a simulation involving nucleation of 63 bubbles, with bias in phase distribution inside bubbles arising from explicit symmetry breaking, we find that not a single vortex/antivortex is produced via the Kibble mechanism, while the new mechanism leads to production of 104 vortices and antivortices. Even without biasing the phase distribution inside bubbles, the vortex production is completely dominated by this new mechanism, which accounts for the production of about 80% of the vortices and antivortices, remaining 20% being produced via the Kibble mechanism. We study the dependence of the effectiveness of the new mechanism on the magnitude of explicit symmetry breaking, as well as on the nucleation rate of bubbles. We also study the effect of damping on this mechanism and show that damping suppresses this mode of vortex production., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures(1 new figure added).
