Search

Antiferromagnetic (AF) topological materials offer a fertile ground to explore a variety of quantum phenomena such as axion magnetoelectric dynamics and chiral Majorana fermions. To realize such intriguing states, it is essential to establish a direct link between electronic states and topology in the AF phase, whereas this has been challenging because of the lack of a suitable materials platform. Here we report the experimental realization of the AF topological-insulator phase in NdBi. By using micro-focused angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we discovered contrasting surface electronic states for two types of AF domains; the surface having the out-of-plane component in the AF-ordering vector displays Dirac-cone states with a gigantic energy gap, whereas the surface parallel to the AF-ordering vector hosts gapless Dirac states despite the time-reversal-symmetry breaking. The present results establish an essential role of combined symmetry to protect massless Dirac fermions under the presence of AF order and widen opportunities to realize exotic phenomena utilizing AF topological materials., Comment: 28 pages, 12 figures

We have fabricated a 180$^\circ$-twisted bilayer ReSe$_2$ by stacking two centrosymmetric monolayer ReSe$_2$ flakes in opposite directions, which is expected to lose spatial inversion symmetry. By the second harmonic generation and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we successfully observed spatial inversion symmetry breaking and emergent band dispersions. The band calculation shows the finite lifting of spin degeneracy (~50 meV) distinct from natural monolayer and bilayer ReSe$_2$. Our results demonstrate that the spin-momentum locked state, which leads to spintronic functions and Berry-curvature-related phenomena, can be realized even with the stacking of centrosymmetric monolayers., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

We performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on hexagonal MnTe, a candidate for an altermagnet with a high critical temperature (TN=307 K). By utilizing photon-energy-tunable ARPES in combination with first-principles calculations, we found that the band structure in the antiferromagnetic phase exhibits a strongly anisotropic band-splitting associated with the time-reversal-symmetry breaking, providing the first direct experimental evidence for the altermagnetic band-splitting. The magnitude of the splitting reaches 0.8 eV at non-high-symmetry momentum points, which is much larger than the spin-orbit gap of ~0.3 eV along the GK high-symmetry cut. Understanding the mechanism of ferromagnetism in ferromagnetic topological insulators (TIs) is a key to realize exotic time-reversal-symmetry-broken quantum phases. However, electronic states relevant to the ferromagnetism are highly controversial. Here we report angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on (CrxSb1-x)2Te3 thin films, high-Curie-temperature (T_C) ferromagnetic TIs, spanning the non-doped (T_C=0 K) to highly-doped (T_C=192 K) region. We found that, upon Cr doping to Sb2Te3, the bulk valence-band valley exhibits filling-in behavior while retaining band inversion, leading to the formation of a nearly-flat band in high-T_C regime and evolution from a six-petal flower to a Star-of-David Fermi surface. Despite the weakening of spin-orbit coupling with Cr doping, the Dirac-cone state persists up to the highest-T_C sample, and shows a clear magnetic-gap opening below TC accompanied with an unexpected band shift, signifying its strong coupling with spontaneous ferromagnetism. Mn$_{1-x}$Ga$_x$ (MnGa) with the $L1_0$ structure is a ferromagnetic material with strong perpendicular magneto-crystalline anisotropy. Although MnGa thin films have been successfully grown epitaxially and studied for various spintronics devices, fundamental understandings of its electronic structure are still lacking. To address this issue, we have investigated $L1_0$-MnGa thin films using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). We have observed a large Fermi surface with a rhombic shape in the $k_x$-$k_y$ plane overlapping neighboring Fermi surfaces. The $k_z$ dependence of the band structure suggests that the band dispersion observed by ARPES comes from the three-dimensional band structure of MnGa folded by a $\sqrt{2} \times \sqrt{2}$ reconstruction. The band dispersion across the corner of the rhombic Fermi surface forms an electron pocket with a weak $k_z$ dependence. The effective mass and the mobility of the bands crossing the Fermi level near the corner are estimated from the ARPES images. Based on the experimental findings, the relationship between the observed band structure and the spin-dependent properties in MnGa-based heterostructures is discussed., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures

We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on epitaxial VTe2 films to elucidate the relationship between the fermiology and charge-density waves (CDW). We found that a two-dimensional triangular pocket in 1 monolayer (ML) VTe2 is converted to a strongly warped quasi-one-dimensional (1D) Fermi surface in the 6ML counterpart, likely associated with the 1T-to-1T' structural phase transition. We also revealed a metallic Fermi edge on the entire Fermi surface in 6ML at low temperature distinct from anisotropic pseudogap in 1ML, signifying a contrast behavior of CDW that is also supported by first-principles band-structure caluculations. The present result points to the importance of simultaneously controlling the structural phase and fermiology to manipulate the CDW properties in ultrathin transition-metal dichalcogenides., Comment: To be published in Physical Review B

Realization of topological superconductors (TSCs) hosting Majorana fermions is a central challenge in condensed-matter physics. One approach is to use the superconducting proximity effect (SPE) in heterostructures, where a topological insulator contacted with a superconductor hosts an effective p-wave pairing by the penetration of Cooper pairs across the interface. However, this approach suffers a difficulty in accessing the topological interface buried deep beneath the surface. Here, we propose an alternative approach to realize topological superconductivity without SPE. In a Pb(111) thin film grown on TlBiSe2, we discover that the Dirac-cone state of substrate TlBiSe2 migrates to the top surface of Pb film and obtains an energy gap below the superconducting transition temperature of Pb. This suggests that a BCS superconductor is converted into a TSC by the topological proximity effect. Three-dimensional topological insulators (3D-TIs) possess a specific topological order of electronic bands, resulting in gapless surface states via bulk-edge correspondence. Exotic phenomena have been realized in ferromagnetic TIs, such as the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect with a chiral edge conduction and a quantized value of the Hall resistance ${R_{yx}}$. Here, we report on the emergence of distinct topological phases in paramagnetic Fe-doped (Bi,Sb)${_2}$Se${_3}$ heterostructures with varying structure architecture, doping, and magnetic and electric fields. Starting from a 3D-TI, a two-dimensional insulator appears at layer thicknesses below a critical value, which turns into an Anderson insulator for Fe concentrations sufficiently large to produce localization by magnetic disorder. With applying a magnetic field, a topological transition from the Anderson insulator to the QAH state occurs, which is driven by the formation of an exchange gap owing to a giant Zeeman splitting and reduced magnetic disorder. We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on transition-metal dichalcogenide 1$T$-HfTe$_2$ to elucidate the evolution of electronic states upon potassium (K) deposition. In pristine HfTe$_2$, an in-plane hole pocket and electron pockets are observed at the Brillouin-zone center and corner, respectively, indicating the semimetallic nature of bulk HfTe$_2$, with dispersion perpendicular to the plane. In contrast, the band structure of heavily K-dosed HfTe$_2$ is obviously different from that of bulk, and resembles the band structure calculated for monolayer HfTe$_2$. It was also observed that lightly K-dosed HfTe$_2$ is characterized by quantized bands originating from bilayer and trilayer HfTe$_2$, indicative of staging. The results suggest that the dimensionality-crossover from 3D (dimensional) to 2D electronic states due to systematic K intercalation takes place via staging in a single sample. One of key challenges in current material research is to search for new topological materials with inverted bulk-band structure. In topological insulators, the band inversion caused by strong spin-orbit coupling leads to opening of a band gap in the entire Brillouin zone, whereas an additional crystal symmetry such as point-group and nonsymmorphic symmetries sometimes prohibits the gap opening at/on specific points or line in momentum space, giving rise to topological semimetals. Despite many theoretical predictions of topological insulators/semimetals associated with such crystal symmetries, the experimental realization is still relatively scarce. Here, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with bulk-sensitive soft x-ray photons, we experimentally demonstrate that hexagonal pnictide CaAgAs belongs to a new family of topological insulators characterized by the inverted band structure and the mirror reflection symmetry of crystal. We have established the bulk valence-band structure in three-dimensional Brillouin zone, and observed the Dirac-like energy band and ring-torus Fermi surface associated with the line node, where bulk valence and conducting bands cross on a line in the momentum space under negligible spin-orbit coupling. Intriguingly, we found that no other bands cross the Fermi level and therefore the low-energy excitations are solely characterized by the Dirac-like band. We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) of LaSb and CeSb, a candidate of topological insulator. Using soft-x-ray photons, we have accurately determined the three-dimensional bulk band structure and revealed that the band inversion at the Brillouin-zone corner - a prerequisite for realizing topological-insulator phase - is absent in both LaSb and CeSb. Moreover, unlike the ARPES data obtained with soft-x-ray photons, those with vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photons were found to suffer significant $k_z$ broadening. These results suggest that LaSb and CeSb are topologically trivial semimetals, and unusual Dirac-cone-like states observed with VUV photons are not of the topological origin., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, to appear in Phys. We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on trigonal tellurium consisting of helical chains in the crystal. Through the band-structure mapping in the three-dimensional Brillouin zone, we found a definitive evidence for the band splitting originating from the chiral nature of crystal. A direct comparison of the band dispersion between the ARPES results and the first-principles band-structure calculations suggests the presence of Weyl nodes and tiny spin-polarized hole pockets around the H point. The present result opens a pathway toward studying the interplay among crystal symmetry, band structure, and exotic physical properties in chiral crystals., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Recently, Kobayashi et al. (arXiv:1608.07718; ref. 1) have proposed an alternative interpretation of our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) results for the dilute ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As. They claim that our ARPES data [Sci. Rep. 6, 27266 (2016); ref. 2] can be explained by locating the Fermi level EF above the valence-band top, supporting the impurity-band model of ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As. In this comment, we show that the assignment of bands' positions in respect to EF by Kobayashi et al. is not consistent with our data. By comparing the ARPES result to band-structure calculations, we demonstrate clearly that EF resides inside the valence band in accordance with the p-d Zener model., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure

We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on Tl0.5Bi2Te3, a possible topological superconductor derived from Bi2Te3. We found that the bulk Fermi surface consists of multiple three-dimensional hole pockets surrounding the Z point, produced by the direct hole doping into the valence band. The Dirac-cone surface state is well isolated from the bulk bands, and the surface chemical potential is variable in the entire band-gap range. Tl0.5Bi2Te3 thus provides an excellent platform to realize two-dimensional topological superconductivity through a proximity effect from the superconducting bulk. We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on HfSiS, which has been predicted to be a topological line-node semimetal with square Si lattice. We found a quasi-two-dimensional Fermi surface hosting bulk nodal lines, alongside the surface states at the Brillouin-zone corner exhibiting a sizable Rashba splitting and band-mass renormalization due to many-body interactions. Most notably, we discovered an unexpected Dirac-like dispersion extending one-dimensionally in k space - the Dirac-node arc - near the bulk node at the zone diagonal. These novel Dirac states reside on the surface and could be related to hybridizations of bulk states, but currently we have no explanation for its origin. Carrier-induced nature of ferromagnetism in a ferromagnetic semiconductor, (Ga,Mn)As, offers a great opportunity to observe novel spin-related phenomena as well as to demonstrate new functionalities of spintronic devices. Here, we report on low-temperature angle-resolved photoemission studies of the valence band in this model compound. By a direct determination of the distance of the split-off band to the Fermi energy EF, we conclude that EF is located within the heavy/light hole band. However, the bands are strongly perturbed by disorder and disorder-induced carrier correlations that lead to the Coulomb gap at EF, which we resolve experimentally in a series of samples, and show that its depth and width enlarge when the Curie temperature decreases. Furthermore, we have detected surprising linear magnetic dichroism in photoemission spectra of the split-off band. By a quantitative theoretical analysis we demonstrate that it arises from the Dresselhaus-type spin-orbit term in zinc-blende crystals. The spectroscopic access to the magnitude of such asymmetric part of spin-orbit coupling is worthwhile, as they account for spin-orbit torque in spintronic devices of ferromagnets without inversion symmetry., Comment: 30 pages, 5 figures, supplemental info included

We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on noncentrosymmetric Weyl semimetal candidate NbP, and determined the electronic states of both Nb- and P-terminated surfaces corresponding to the "opposite" surfaces of a polar crystal. We revealed a drastic difference in the Fermi-surface topology between the opposite surfaces, whereas the Fermi arcs on both surfaces are likely terminated at the surface projection of the same bulk Weyl nodes. Comparison of the ARPES data with our first-principles band calculations suggests notable difference in electronic structure at the Nb-terminated surface between theory and experiment. We have fabricated a high-quality monolayer WSe2 film on bilayer graphene by epitaxial growth, and revealed the electronic states by spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We observed a direct energy gap at the Brillounin-zone corner in contrast to the indirect nature of gap in bulk WSe2, which is attributed to the lack of interlayer interaction and the breaking of space-inversion symmetry in monolayer film. A giant spin splitting of ~0.5 eV, which is the largest among known monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides, is observed in the energy band around the zone corner. The present results suggest a high potential applicability of WSe2 to develop advanced devices based with the coupling of spin- and valley-degrees of freedom., Comment: accepted for publication in Appl. We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on Cux(PbSe)5(Bi2Se3)6 (CPSBS; x = 1.47), a superconductor derived from a topological insulator heterostructure, to elucidate the electronic states relevant to the occurrence of possible unconventional superconductivity. Upon Cu intercalation into the parent compound (PbSe)5(Bi2Se3)6, we observed a distinct energy shift of the bulk conduction band due to electron doping. Photon-energy dependent ARPES measurements of CPSBS revealed that the observed bulk band forms a cylindrical electronlike Fermi surface at the Brillouin-zone center. The two-dimensional nature of the bulk electronic states suggests the occurrence of odd-parity Eu pairing or even-parity d-wave pairing, both of which may provide a platform of Majorana bound states in the superconducting state., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

To realize a one-dimensional (1D) system with strong spin-orbit coupling is a big challenge in modern physics, since the electrons in such a system are predicted to exhibit exotic properties unexpected from the 2D or 3D counterparts, while it was difficult to realize genuine physical properties inherent to the 1D system. We demonstrate the first experimental result that directly determines the purely 1D band structure by performing spin-resolved angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of Bi islands on a silicon surface that contains a metallic 1D edge structure with unexpectedly large Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling suggestive of the nontopological nature. We have also found a sizable out-of-plane spin polarization of the 1D edge state, consistent with our first-principles band calculations. Our result provides a new platform to realize exotic quantum phenomena at the 1D edge of the strong spin-orbit-coupling systems.

We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on the (111) surface of the topological crystalline insulator SnTe. Distinct from a pair of Dirac-cone surface states across the X_bar point of the surface Brillouin zone on the (001) surface, we revealed two types of Dirac-cone surface states each centered at the G_bar and M_bar points, which originate from the bulk-band inversion at the L points. We also found that the energy location of the Dirac point and the Dirac velocity are different from each other. This ARPES experiment demonstrates the surface states on different crystal faces of a topological material, and it elucidates how mirror-symmetry-protected Dirac cones of a topological crystalline insulator show up on surfaces with different symmetries., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

We have performed spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of the topological insulator Pb(Bi,Sb)2Te4 (Pb124) and observed significant out-of-plane spin polarization on the hexagonally warped Dirac-cone surface state. To put this into context, we carried out quantitative analysis of the warping strengths for various topological insulators (Pb124, Bi2Te3, Bi2Se3, and TlBiSe2) and elucidated that the out-of-plane spin polarization Pz is systematically correlated with the warping strength. However, the magnitude of Pz is found to be only half of that expected from the kp theory when the warping is strong, which points to the possible role of many-body effects. Besides confirming a universal relationship between the spin polarization and the surface state structure, our data provide an empirical guiding principle for tuning the spin polarization in topological insulators., Comment: 5pages, 5 figures

We propose a lateral spin-blockade device that uses an InGaAs/InAlAs double quantum well (DQW), where the values of the Rashba spin-orbit parameter $\alpha_{\rm R}$ are opposite in sign but equal in magnitude between the constituent quantum wells (QW). By tuning the channel length of DQW and the magnitude of the externally applied in-plane magnetic field, one can block the transmission of one spin (e.g., spin-down) component, leading to a spin-polarized current. Such a spin-blocking effect, brought about by wave vector matching of the spin-split Fermi surfaces between the two QWs, paves the way for a new scheme of spin-polarized electric current generation for future spintronics applications based on semiconductor band engineering., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures

We have performed systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of the topological crystalline insulator (TCI) Pb1-xSnxTe to elucidate the evolution of its electronic states across the topological phase transition. As previously reported, the band structure of SnTe (x = 1.0) measured on the (001) surface possesses a pair of Dirac-cone surface states located symmetrically across the Xbar point in the (110) mirror plane. Upon approaching the topological phase transition into the trivial phase at x_c ~ 0.25, we discovered that Dirac cones gradually move toward the Xbar point with its spectral weight gradually reduced with decreasing x. In samples with x <= 0.2, the Dirac-cone surface state is completely gone, confirming the occurrence of the topological phase transition. Also, the evolution of the valence band feature is found to be consistent with the bulk band inversion taking place at x_c. The tunability of the location of the Dirac cones in the Brillouin zone would be useful for applications requiring Fermi-surface matching with other materials, such as spin injection., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of the strongly spin-orbit coupled low-carrier density superconductor Sn1-xInxTe (x = 0.045) to elucidate the electronic states relevant to the possible occurrence of topological superconductivity recently reported for this compound from point-contact spectroscopy. The obtained energy-band structure reveals a small holelike Fermi surface centered at the L point of the bulk Brillouin zone, together with a signature of a topological surface state which indicates that this superconductor is essentially a doped topological crystalline insulator characterized by band inversion and mirror symmetry. A comparison of the electronic states with a band-non-inverted superconductor possessing a similar Fermi surface structure, Pb1-xTlxTe, suggests that the anomalous behavior in the superconducting state of Sn1-xInxTe is likely to be related to the peculiar orbital characteristics of the bulk valence band and/or the presence of a topological surface state., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of Si-doped $\beta$-Ga$_2$O$_3$. We observed very small photoemission intensity near the Fermi level corresponding to non-dispersive states assigned to Si impurities. We show evidence for a quantization of these states that is accompanied by a confinement in the momentum space consistent with a real-space finite confinement observed in a previous scanning tunneling microscopy study. Our results suggest that this semi-localization in the conjugate spaces plays a crucial role in the electronic conduction of this material., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on (PbSe)5(Bi2Se3)3m, which forms a natural multilayer heterostructure consisting of a topological insulator (TI) and an ordinary insulator. For m = 2, we observed a gapped Dirac-cone state within the bulk-band gap, suggesting that the topological interface states are effectively encapsulated by block layers; furthermore, it was found that the quantum confinement effect of the band dispersions of Bi2Se3 layers enhances the effective bulk-band gap to 0.5 eV, the largest ever observed in TIs. In addition, we found that the system is no longer in the topological phase at m = 1, pointing to a topological phase transition between m = 1 and 2. These results demonstrate that utilization of naturally-occurring heterostructures is a new promising strategy for realizing exotic quantum phenomena and device applications of TIs., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Topological insulators materialize a topological quantum state of matter where unusual gapless metallic state protected by time-reversal symmetry appears at the edge or surface. Their discovery stimulated the search for new topological states protected by other symmetries, and a recent theory predicted the existence of "topological crystalline insulators" (TCIs) in which the metallic surface states are protected by mirror symmetry of the crystal. However, its experimental verification has not yet been reported. Here we show the first and definitive experimental evidence for the TCI phase in tin telluride (SnTe) which was recently predicted to be a TCI. Our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy shows clear signature of a metallic Dirac-cone surface band with its Dirac point slightly away from the edge of the surface Brillouin zone in SnTe. On the other hand, such a gapless surface state is absent in a cousin material lead telluride (PbTe), in line with the theoretical prediction. The three-dimensional (3D) topological insulator is a novel quantum state of matter where an insulating bulk hosts a linearly-dispersing surface state, which can be viewed as a sea of massless Dirac fermions protected by the time-reversal symmetry (TRS). Breaking the TRS by a magnetic order leads to the opening of a gap in the surface state and consequently the Dirac fermions become massive. It has been proposed theoretically that such a mass acquisition is necessary for realizing novel topological phenomena, but achieving a sufficiently large mass is an experimental challenge. Here we report an unexpected discovery that the surface Dirac fermions in a solid-solution system TlBi(S1-xSex)2 acquires a mass without explicitly breaking the TRS. We found that this system goes through a quantum phase transition from the topological to the non-topological phase, and by tracing the evolution of the electronic states using the angle-resolved photoemission, we observed that the massless Dirac state in TlBiSe2 switches to a massive state before it disappears in the non-topological phase. We performed systematic spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of TlBi(S1-xSex)2 which undergoes a topological phase transition at x ~ 0.5. In TlBiSe2 (x = 1.0), we revealed a helical spin texture of Dirac-cone surface states with an intrinsic in-plane spin polarization of ~ 0.8. The spin polarization still survives in the gapped surface states at x > 0.5, although it gradually weakens upon approaching x = 0.5 and vanishes in the non-topological phase. No evidence for the out-of-plane spin polarization was found irrespective of x and momentum. We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on Pb(Bi1-xSbx)2Te4, which is a member of lead-based ternary tellurides and has been theoretically proposed as a candidate for a new class of three-dimensional topological insulators (TIs). In PbBi2Te4, we found a topological surface state with a hexagonally deformed Dirac-cone band dispersion, indicating that this material is a strong TI with a single topological surface state at the Brillouin-zone center. Partial replacement of Bi with Sb causes a marked change in the Dirac carrier concentration, leading to the sign change of Dirac carriers from n-type to p-type. The Pb(Bi1-xSbx)2Te4 system with tunable Dirac carriers thus provides a new platform for investigating exotic topological phenomena., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We have performed spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of Bi2Te3 and present the first direct evidence for the existence of the out-of-plane spin component on the surface state of a topological insulator. We found that the magnitude of the out-of-plane spin polarization on a hexagonally deformed Fermi surface (FS) of Bi2Te3 reaches maximally 25% of the in-plane counterpart while such a sizable out-of-plane spin component does not exist in the more circular FS of TlBiSe2, indicating that the hexagonal deformation of the FS is responsible for the deviation from the ideal helical spin texture. The observed out-of-plane polarization is much smaller than that expected from existing theory, suggesting that an additional ingredient is necessary for correctly understanding the surface spin polarization in Bi2Te3., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We have performed high resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements on superconducting electron-doped NaFe$_{0.95}$Co$_{0.05}$As ($T_{c}\sim$18 K). We observed a hole-like Fermi surface around the zone center and two electron-like Fermi surfaces around the M point which can be connected by the $Q=(\pi, \pi)$ wavevector, suggesting that scattering over the near-nested Fermi surfaces is important to the superconductivity of this "111" pnicitide. Nearly isotropic superconducting gaps with sharp coherent peaks are observed below $T_c$ on all three Fermi surfaces. Upon increasing temperature through $T_c$, the gap size shows little change while the coherence vanishes. Large ratios of $2\Delta/k_{B}T_{c}\sim8$ are observed for all the bands, indicating a strong coupling in this system. High-temperature superconductivity in iron-arsenic materials (pnictides) near an antiferromagnetic phase raises the possibility of spin-fluctuation-mediated pairing. However, the interplay between antiferromagnetic fluctuations and superconductivity remains unclear in the underdoped regime, which is closer to the antiferromagnetic phase. Here we report that the superconducting gap of the underdoped pnictides scales linearly with the transition temperature, and that a distinct pseudogap coexisting with the SC gap develops on underdoping. This pseudogap occurs on Fermi surface sheets connected by the antiferromagnetic wavevector, where the superconducting pairing is stronger as well, suggesting that antiferromagnetic fluctuations drive both the pseudogap and superconductivity. Interestingly, we found that the pseudogap and the spectral lineshape vary with the Fermi surface quasi-nesting conditions in a fashion that shares similarities with the nodal-antinodal dichotomous behaviour observed in underdoped copper oxide superconductors., Comment: Main Manuscript: 19 pages, 3 figures; Supplementary Information: 10 pages, 7 figures

We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on the optimally-doped Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ compound and determined the accurate momentum dependence of the superconducting (SC) gap in four Fermi-surface sheets including a newly discovered outer electron pocket at the M point. The SC gap on this pocket is nearly isotropic and its magnitude is comparable ($\Delta$ $\sim$ 11 meV) to that of the inner electron and hole pockets ($\sim$12 meV), although it is substantially larger than that of the outer hole pocket ($\sim$6 meV). The Fermi-surface dependence of the SC gap value is basically consistent with $\Delta$($k$) = $\Delta$$_0$cos$k_x$cos$k_y$ formula expected for the extended s-wave symmetry. We have conducted a comprehensive angle-resolved photoemission study on the normal state electronic structure of the Fe-based superconductor Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$. We have identified four dispersive bands which cross the Fermi level and form two hole-like Fermi surfaces around $\Gamma$ and two electron-like Fermi surfaces around M. There are two nearly nested Fermi surface pockets connected by an antiferromagnetic ($\pi$, $\pi$) wavevector. The observed Fermi surfaces show small $k_z$ dispersion and a total volume consistent with Luttinger theorem. Compared to band structure calculations, the overall bandwidth is reduced by a factor of 2. However, many low energy dispersions display stronger mass renormalization by a factor of $\sim$ 4, indicating possible orbital (energy) dependent correlation effects. Using an effective tight banding model, we fitted the band structure and the Fermi surfaces to obtain band parameters reliable for theoretical modeling and calculations of the important physical quantities, such as the specific heat coefficient., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on heavily overdoped KFe_2As_2 (transition temperature (Tc = 3 K). We observed several renormalized bands near the Fermi level with a renormalization factor of 2-4. While the Fermi surface (FS) around the Brillouin-zone center is qualitatively similar to that of optimally-doped Ba_{1-x}K_xFe_2As_2 (x = 0.4; Tc = 37 K), the FS topology around the zone corner (M point) is markedly different: the two electron FS pockets are completely absent due to excess of hole doping. This result indicates that the electronic states around the M point play an important role in the high-Tc superconductivity of Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ and suggests that the interband scattering via the antiferromagnetic wave vector essentially controls the Tc value in the overdoped region., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of the new superconductor Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ in the low energy range. We report the observation of an anomaly around 25 meV in the dispersion of superconducting Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ samples that nearly vanishes above $T_c$. The energy scale of the related mode (13$\pm$2 meV) and its strong dependence on orbital and temperature indicates that it is unlikely related to phonons. Moreover, the momentum locations of the kink can be connected by the antiferromagnetic wavevector. Our results point towards an unconventional electronic origin of the mode and the superconducting pairing in the Fe-based superconductors, and strongly support the anti-phase s-wave pairing symmetry., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

The recent discovery of superconductivity in iron-arsenic compounds below a transition temperature (Tc) as high as 55K ended the monopoly of copper oxides (cuprates) in the family of high-Tc superconductors. A critical issue in understanding this new superconductor, as in the case of cuprates, is the nature, in particular the symmetry and orbital dependence, of the superconducting gap. There are conflicting experimental results, mostly from indirect measurements of the low energy excitation gap, ranging from one gap to two gaps, from line nodes to nodeless gap function in momentum space. Here we report a direct observation of the superconducting gap, including its momentum, temperature, and Fermi surface (FS) dependence in Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 (Tc = 37 K) using angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. We find two superconducting gaps with different values: a large gap (~ 12 meV) on the two small hole-like and electron-like FS sheets, and a small gap (~ 6 meV) on the large hole-like FS. Both gaps, closing simultaneously at the bulk Tc, are nodeless and nearly isotropic around their respective FS sheets. The isotropic pairing interactions are strongly orbital dependent, as the ratio 2Delta/kBTc switches from weak to strong coupling on different bands. The same and surprisingly large superconducting gap due to strong pairing on the two small FS, which are connected by the (pi, 0) spin-density-wave vector in the parent compound, strongly suggests that the pairing mechanism originates from the inter-band interactions between these two nested FS sheets., Comment: 4 figures

We report high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy of newly-discovered iron-based layered superconductor La(O$_{0.93}$F$_{0.07}$)FeAs (Tc = 24 K). We found that the superconducting gap shows a marked deviation from the isotropic s-wave symmetry. The estimated gap size at 5 K is 3.6 meV in the s- or axial p-wave case, while it is 4.1 meV in the polar p- or d-wave case. We also found a pseudogap of 15-20 meV above Tc, which is gradually filled-in with increasing temperature and closes at temperature far above Tc similarly to copper-oxide high-temperature superconductors., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, J. Angle resolved photoemission on underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 reveals that the magnitude and d-wave anisotropy of the superconducting state energy gap are independent of temperature all the way up to Tc. This lack of T variation of the entire k-dependent gap is in marked contrast to mean field theory. At Tc the point nodes of the d-wave gap abruptly expand into finite length ``Fermi arcs''. This change occurs within the width of the resistive transition, and thus the Fermi arcs are not simply thermally broadened nodes but rather a unique signature of the pseudogap phase., Comment: Accepted by Phys. We have performed systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on single-layered cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2CuO6 to elucidate the origin of shadow band. We found that the shadow band is exactly the c(2x2) replica of the main band irrespective of the carrier concentration and its intensity is invariable with respect to temperature, doping, and substitution constituents of block layers. This result rules out the possibility of antiferromagnetic correlation and supports the structural origin of shadow band. ARPES experiments on optimally doped La1.85Sr0.15CuO4 also clarified the existence of the c(2x2) shadow band, demonstrating that the shadow band is not a unique feature of Bi-based cuprates. High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy has been performed on Sb(111) to elucidate the origin of anomalous electronic properties in group-V semimetal surfaces. The surface was found to be metallic despite the semimetallic character of bulk. We clearly observed two surface-derived Fermi surfaces which are likely spin split, demonstrating that the spin-orbit interaction plays a dominant role in characterising the surface electronic states of group-V semimetals. We report a systematic angle-resolved photoemission study on Na$_x$CoO$_2$ for a wide range of Na concentrations ($0.3 \leq x \leq 0.72$). In all the metallic samples at different $x$, we observed (i) only a single hole-like Fermi surface centered around $\Gamma$ and (ii) its area changes with $x$ according to the Luttinger theorem. We also observed a surface state that exhibits a larger Fermi surface area. The $e_g^\prime$ band and the associated small Fermi surface pockets near the $K$ points predicted by band calculations are found to ``sink'' below the Fermi energy in a manner almost independent of the doping and temperature., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

We report ARPES results of the Fermi surface of Ca_{1.5}Sr_{0.5}RuO$_{4}, which is at the boundary of magnetic/orbital instability in the phase diagram of the Ca-substituted Sr ruthenates. Three t_{2g} energy bands and the corresponding Fermi surface sheets are observed, which are also present in the Ca-free Sr_{2}RuO$_{4}. We find that while the Fermi surface topology of the alpha, beta (d_{yz, zx}) sheets remains almost the same in these two materials, the gamma (d_{xy}) sheet exhibits a hole-like Fermi surface in Ca_{1.5}Sr_{0.5}RuO_{4} in contrast to being electron-like in Sr_{2}RuO_{4}. Our observation of all three volume conserving Fermi surface sheets clearly demonstrates the absence of orbital-selective Mott transition, which was proposed theoretically to explain the unusual transport and magnetic properties in Ca_{1.5}Sr_{0.5}RuO_{4}.

The electronic structure of single crystals Na$_{0.6}$CoO$_2$, which are closely related to the superconducting Na$_{0.3}$CoO$_2$.$y$H$_2$O ($T_c \sim 5K$), is studied by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. While the measured Fermi surface is found to be consistent with the prediction of a local density band theory, the energy dispersion is highly renormalized, with an anisotropy along the two principle axes ($\Gamma$-$K$, $\Gamma$-$M$). Our ARPES result also indicates that an extended flat band is formed slightly above $E_F$ along $\Gamma$-$K$. In addition, an unusual band splitting is observed in the vicinity of the Fermi surface along the $\Gamma$-$M$ direction, which differs from the predicted bilayer splitting., Comment: 4 figures

We have performed high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy on MgB2 and observed opening of a superconducting gap with a narrow coherent peak. We found that the superconducting gap is s-like with the gap value of 4.5 meV at 15 K. The temperature dependence (15 - 40 K) of gap value follows well the BCS form, suggesting that 2Delta/kBTc at T=0 is about 3. No pseudogap behavior is observed in the normal state.
