Flat bands in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene serve as the arena where exotic correlation physics unfolds. Previous studies have shown that phonons, through mediating an effective electron-electron interaction, can play a crucial role in determining various electronic phases. In this study, we project the full electron-phonon coupling vertex, derived from microscopic tight-binding lattice calculations, onto the basis of the topological heavy fermion model [Song and Bernevig, PRL 129, 047601 (2022)], and identify the significance of each phonon mode. With phonon fields integrated out, an on-site anti-Hund's interaction $\hat{H}_{\rm A}$ on the moir\'e-scale local $f$-orbitals is obtained, with strengths 1 to 4 meV. We solve the phonon-induced multiplet splittings, and then elaborate on phonon-favored symmetry-breaking orders at even-integer fillings. Through systematic self-consistent Hartree-Fock calculations, we uncover a tight competition between $\Gamma$-phonon-favored orbital orders, $K$-phonon-favored inter-valley coherent orders, and the kinetic and Coulomb-favored orders. A Hund's interaction $\hat{H}_{\rm H}$ with strengths 1 to 3 meV, which originates from the carbon atom Hubbard, and partly counteracts the effect of $\hat{H}_{\rm A}$, is also discussed. In the end, we explore the possibility of finding an exotic Dirac semi-metal at the charge-neutrality point which is formed solely by $c$-electrons, while $f$-impurities exhibit a symmetric Mott gap by forming non-degenerate singlets under $\hat{H}_{\rm A,H}$. Experimental features that distinguish such a state are discussed.

The electric resistivity is examined in the constrained Hilbert space of a doped Mott insulator, which is dictated by a non-Ioffe-Larkin composition rule due to the underlying mutual Chern-Simons topological gauge structure. In the low-temperature pseudogap phase, where holons remain condensed while spinons proliferate, the charge transport is governed by a chiral spinon excitation, comprising a bosonic spin-$1/2$ at the core of a supercurrent vortex. It leads to a vanishing resistivity with the "confinement" of the spinons in the superconducting phase but a low-$T$ divergence of the resistivity once the spinon confinement is disrupted by external magnetic fields. In the latter, the chiral spinons will generate a Hall number $n_H =$ doping concentration $\delta$ and a Nernst effect to signal an underlying long-range entanglement between the charge and spin degrees of freedom. Their presence is further reflected in thermodynamic quantities such as specific heat and spin susceptibility. Finally, in the high-temperature spin-disordered phase, it is shown that the holons exhibit a linear-$T$ resistivity by scattering with the spinons acting as free local moments, which generate randomized gauge fluxes as perceived by the charge degree of freedom., Comment: 6+6 pages, 6 figures

Topologically trivial insulators can be classified into atomic insulators (AIs) and obstructed atomic insulators (OAIs) depending on whether the Wannier charge centers are localized or not at spatial positions occupied by atoms. An OAI can possess unusual properties such as surface states along certain crystalline surfaces, which advantageously appear in materials with much larger bulk energy gap than topological insulators, making them more attractive for potential applications. In this work, we show that a well-known crystal, silicon (Si) is a model OAI, which naturally explains some of Si's unusual properties such as its famous (111) surface states. On this surface, using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we reveal sharp quasi-1D massive Dirac line dispersions; we also observe, using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS), topological solitons at the interface of the two atomic chains. Remarkably, we show that the different chain domains can be reversibly switched at the nanometer scale, suggesting the application potential in ultra-high density storage devices.

Potential wells are employed to constrain quantum particles into forming discrete energy levels, acting as artificial few-level systems. In contrast, an anti-parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric system can have a single pair of real energy levels, while all the remaining levels are unstable due to the negative imaginary part of the energy. In this work, we investigate the formation of bound states in a tight-binding chain induced by a harmonic imaginary potential. Exact solutions show that the real parts of energy levels are equidistant, while the imaginary parts are semi-negative definite and equidistant. This allows for the formation of an effective two-level system. For a given initial state with a wide range of profiles, the evolved state always converges to a superposition of two stable eigenstates. In addition, these two states are orthogonal under the Dirac inner product and can be mutually switched by applying a $\pi$ pulse of a linear field. Motivated by recent experimental observations of displacement-field-tuned correlated insulators at integer and half-integer fillings in chirally twisted triple bilayer graphene (CTTBG), we study the single-particle and interacting physics of CTTBG. We find that there are two inequivalent stacking orders, {\it i.e.}, ABABBC and ABABAB, and both exhibit flat bands with nontrivial topology. We then use the Hartree-Fock approximation to calculate the rich phase diagram of CTTBG at all integer and half-integer fillings in both stacking orders and under the vertical displacement field. Under a small displacement field, the groundstates are flavor polarized states for ABABBC stacking order and intervalley coherent states for ABABAB stacking order at all integer and half-integer fillings. A larger displacement field will turn them into layer-polarized states. At half-integer fillings, the groundstates also exhibit charge density wave (CDW) order. For ABABAB stacking, the groundstates are always $2\times1$ stripe state among a range of displacement fields. For ABABBC stacking, the groundstates are also $2\times1$ stripe states under a small displacement field and a larger displacement will possibly favor further translation-symmetry-breaking, depending on filling and the direction of the displacement field. We demonstrate that the CDW states observed in the experiment can originate from the strong Coulomb interaction of the flat band electrons.

We propose a general principle for the low-energy theory of narrow bands with concentrated Berry curvature and Fubini-Study metric in the form of a map to Anderson-"+" models composed of heavy fermions hybridizing and interacting with semi-metallic modes. This map resolves the obstruction preventing topological bands from being realized in a local Hamiltonian acting on the low-energy degrees of freedom. The concentrated quantum geometry is reproduced through band inversion with a dispersive semi-metal, leaving a nearly flat, trivial band which becomes the heavy fermion. This representation is natural when the narrow band is not energetically isolated on the scale of the interaction and an enlarged Hilbert space is inescapable, but also provides analytical insight into the projected-interaction limit. First exemplified in twisted bilayer graphene (TBG), we extend it to (1) the twisted checkerboard, which we find has a chiral symmetric stable anomaly that forbids a lattice realization at all energies, and (2) the Lieb lattice with gapless flat bands, where we show the heavy fermions can be obtained by minimizing a Euclidean instanton action to saturate its BPS bound. The heavy fermion approach is widely applicable and physically transparent: heavy electrons carry the strong correlations and dispersive electrons carry the topology. This simple picture unifies the dichotomous phenomena observed in TBG and points to connections between moir\'e and stoichiometric materials.

We propose a theory for how the weak phonon-mediated interaction ($J_{\rm A}\!=\!1\!\sim\!4$meV) wins over the prohibitive Coulomb repulsion ($U\!=\!30\!\sim\!60$meV) and leads to a superconductor in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG). We find the pairing mechanism akin to that in the A$_3$C$_{60}$ family of molecular superconductors: Each AA stacking region of MATBG resembles a C$_{60}$ molecule, in that optical phonons can dynamically lift the degeneracy of the moir\'e orbitals, in analogy to the dynamical Jahn-Teller effect. Such induced $J_{\rm A}$ has the form of an inter-valley anti-Hund's coupling and is less suppressed than $U$ by the Kondo screening near a Mott insulator. Additionally, we also considered an intra-orbital Hund's coupling $J_{\rm H}$ that originates from the on-site repulsion of a carbon atom. Under a reasonable approximation of the realistic model, we prove that the renormalized local interaction between quasi-particles must have a pairing (negative) channel in a doped correlated insulator at $\nu=\pm(2+\delta\nu)$, albeit the bare interaction is positive definite. The proof is non-perturbative and based on exact asymptotic behaviors of the vertex function imposed by Ward identities. Existence of an optimal $U$ for superconductivity is predicted. We also analyzed the pairing symmetry. In a large area of the parameter space of $J_{\rm A}$, $J_{\rm H}$, the ground state has a nematic $d$-wave singlet pairing, which, however, can lead to a $p$-wave-like nodal structure due to the Berry's phase on Fermi surfaces (or Euler obstruction).

The $k\cdot p$ method is significant in condensed matter physics for the compact and analytical Hamiltonian. In the presence of magnetic field, it is described by the effective Zeeman's coupling Hamiltonian with Land\'e $ g $-factors. Here, we develop an open-source package VASP2KP (including two parts: vasp2mat and mat2kp) to compute $k\cdot p$ parameters and Land\'e $g$-factors directly from the wavefunctions provided by the density functional theory (DFT) as implemented in Vienna ab initio Simulation Package (VASP). First, we develop a VASP patch vasp2mat to compute matrix representations of the generalized momentum operator $ \mathbf{\hat{\pi}}=\mathbf{\hat{p}}+\frac{1}{2mc^2}\left(\mathbf{\hat{s}}\times\nabla V(\mathbf{r})\right) $, spin operator $\mathbf{\hat{s}}$, time reversal operator $\hat{T}$ and crystalline symmetry operators $\hat{R}$ on the DFT wavefunctions. Second, we develop a python code mat2kp to obtain the unitary transformation $U$ that rotates the degenerate DFT basis towards the standard basis, and then automatically compute the $k\cdot p$ parameters and $g$-factors. The theory and the methodology behind VASP2KP are described in detail. The matrix elements of the operators are derived comprehensively and computed correctly within the projector augmented wave method. We apply this package to some materials, e.g., Bi$_2$Se$_3$, Na$_3$Bi, Te, InAs and 1H-TMD monolayers. The obtained effective model's dispersions are in good agreement with the DFT data around the specific wave vector, and the $g$-factors are consistent with experimental data. In the pseudogap phase of the cuprate, a thermal Hall response of neutral objects has been recently detected experimentally, which continuously persists into the antiferromagnetic insulating phase. In this work, we study the transport properties of neutral spinons as the elementary excitation of a doped Mott insulator, which is governed by a mutual Chern-Simons topological gauge structure. We show that such a chiral spinon as a composite of an $S=1/2$ spin sitting at the core of a supercurrent vortex, can contribute to the thermal Hall effect, thermopower, and Hall effect due to its intrinsic transverse (cyclotron) motion under internal fictitious fluxes. In particular, the magnitudes of the transport coefficients are phenomenologically determined by two basic parameters: the doping concentration and $T_c$, quantitatively consistent with the experimental measurements including the signs and qualitative temperature and magnetic field dependence. Combined with the predictions of the spinon longitudinal transport properties, including the Nernst and spin Hall effects, a phenomenological description of the pseudogap phase is established as characterized by the neutral spinon excitations, which eventually become "confined" with an intrinsic superconducting transition at $T_c$. Finally, within this theoretical framework, the "order to order" phase transition between the superconducting and antiferromagnetic insulating phases are briefly discussed, with the thermal Hall monotonically increasing into the latter., Comment: 12+5 pages, 7+2 figures

We investigate the influence of the external fields on the stability of spin helix states in a XXZ Heisenberg model. Exact diagonalization on finite system shows that random transverse fields in x and y directions drive the transition from integrability to nonintegrability. It results in the fast decay of a static helix state, which is the eigenstate of an unperturbed XXZ Heisenberg model. However, in the presence of uniform z field, the static helix state becomes a dynamic helix state with a relatively long life as a quantum scar state., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

In this work, we exhaust all the spin-space symmetries, which fully characterize collinear, non-collinear, commensurate, and incommensurate spiral magnetism, and investigate enriched features of electronic bands that respect these symmetries. We achieve this by systematically classifying the so-called spin space groups (SSGs) - joint symmetry groups of spatial and spin operations that leave the magnetic structure unchanged. Generally speaking, they are accurate (approximate) symmetries in systems where spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is negligible (finite but weaker than the interested energy scale); but we also show that specific SSGs could remain valid even in the presence of a strong SOC. By representing the SSGs as O($N$) representations, we - for the first time - obtain the complete classifications of 1421, 9542, and 56512 distinct SSGs for collinear ($N=1$), coplanar ($N=2$), and non-coplanar ($N=3$) magnetism, respectively. SSG not only fully characterizes the symmetry of spin d.o.f., but also gives rise to exotic electronic states, which, in general, form projective representations of magnetic space groups (MSGs). Surprisingly, electronic bands in SSGs exhibit features never seen in MSGs, such as nonsymmorphic SSG Brillouin zone (BZ), where SSG operations behave as glide or screw when act on momentum and unconventional spin-momentum locking, which is completely determined by SSG, independent of Hamiltonian details. To apply our theory, we identify the SSG for each of the 1604 published magnetic structures in the MAGNDATA database on the Bilbao Crystallographic Server. Material examples exhibiting aforementioned novel features are discussed with emphasis. Transitions between distinct obstructed atomic insulators (OAIs) protected by crystalline symmetries, where electrons form molecular orbitals centering away from the atom positions, must go through an intermediate metallic phase. In this work, we find that the intermediate metals will become a scale-invariant critical metal phase (CMP) under certain types of quenched disorder that respect the magnetic crystalline symmetries on average. We explicitly construct models respecting average $C_{2z}T$, $m$, and $C_{4z}T$ and show their scale-invariance under chemical potential disorder by the finite-size scaling method. Conventional theories, such as weak anti-localization and topological phase transition, cannot explain the underlying mechanism. A quantitative mapping between lattice and network models shows that the CMP can be understood through a semi-classical percolation problem. Ultimately, we systematically classify all the OAI transitions protected by (magnetic) groups $Pm$, $P2'$, $P4'$, and $P6'$ with and without spin-orbit coupling, most of which can support CMP.

The recently-introduced Topological Heavy Fermion (THF) model [Phys. Rev. Lett. 129, 047601] of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) aims to reconcile the quantum-dot-like electronic structure of the latter observed by scanning tunneling microscopy, with its electron delocalization seen in transport measurements. The THF model achieves this by coupling localized (heavy) fermions with anomalous conduction electrons. Originally, the parameters of the THF model were obtained numerically from the Bistritzer-Macdonald (BM) model of TBG [Phys. Rev. Lett. 129, 047601]. In this work, we derive analytical expressions for the THF model parameters as a function of the twist angle, the ratio between the tunneling amplitudes at the $AA$ and $AB$ regions ($w_0 / w_1$), and the screening length of the interaction potential. By numerically computing the THF model parameters across an extensive experimentally-relevant parameter space, we show that the resulting approximations are remarkably good, i.e. within the 30% relative error for almost the entire parameter space. At the single-particle level, the THF model accurately captures the energy spectrum of the BM model over a large phase space of angles and tunneling amplitude ratios. When interactions are included, we also show that the THF description of TBG is good around the magic angle for realistic values of the tunneling amplitude ratios ($0.6 \leq w_0/w_1 \leq 1.0$), for which the hybridization between the localized and conduction fermions $\gamma$ is smaller than the onsite repulsion of the heavy fermions $U_1$ (i.e. $|\gamma| < U_1$)., Comment: 18+144 pages and 6+57 figures. A number of interesting physical phenomena have been discovered in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG), such as superconductivity, correlated gapped and gapless phases, etc. The gapped phases are believed to be symmetry-breaking states described by mean-field theories, whereas gapless phases exhibit features beyond mean field. This work, combining poor man's scaling, numerical renormalization group, and dynamic mean-field theory, demonstrates that the gapless phases are the heavy Fermi liquid state with some symmetries broken and the others preserved. We adopt the recently proposed topological heavy fermion model for MATBG with effective local orbitals around AA-stacking regions and Dirac fermions surrounding them. At zero temperature and most non-integer fillings, the ground states are found to be heavy Fermi liquids and exhibit Kondo resonance peaks. The Kondo temperature $T_K$ is found at the order of 1meV. A higher temperature than $T_K$ will drive the system into a metallic LM phase where disordered LM's and a Fermi liquid coexist. At integer fillings $\pm1,\pm2$, $T_K$ is suppressed to zero or a value weaker than RKKY interaction, leading to Mott insulators or symmetry-breaking states. This theory offers a unified explanation for several experimental observations, such as zero-energy peaks and quantum-dot-like behaviors in STM, the Pomeranchuk effect, and the saw-tooth feature of inverse compressibility, etc. For future experimental verification, we predict that the Fermi surface in the gapless phase will shrink upon heating - as a characteristic of the heavy Fermi liquid. We also conjecture that the heavy Fermi liquid is the parent state of the observed unconventional superconductivity because the Kondo screening reduces the overwhelming Coulomb interaction (~60meV) to a rather small effective interaction (~1meV) comparable to possible weak attractive interactions., Comment: 14+12 pages, 5+3 figures. The topological phases of non-interacting fermions have been classified by their symmetries, culminating in a modern electronic band theory where wavefunction topology can be obtained (in part) from momentum space. Recently, Real Space Invariants (RSIs) have provided a spatially local description of the global momentum space indices. The present work generalizes this real space classification to interacting 2D states. We construct many-body local RSIs as the quantum numbers of a set of symmetry operators on open boundaries, but which are independent of the choice of boundary. Using the $U(1)$ particle number, they yield many-body fragile topological indices, which we use to identify which single-particle fragile states are many-body topological or trivial at weak coupling. To this end, we construct an exactly solvable Hamiltonian with single-particle fragile topology that is adiabatically connected to a trivial state through strong coupling. We then define global many-body RSIs on periodic boundary conditions. They reduce to Chern numbers in the band theory limit, but also identify strongly correlated stable topological phases with no single-particle counterpart. Finally, we show that the many-body local RSIs appear as quantized coefficients of Wen-Zee terms in the topological quantum field theory describing the phase., Comment: 5 + 36 pages

Phonons play a crucial role in many properties of solid state systems, such as thermal and electrical conductivity, neutron scattering and associated effects or superconductivity. Hence, it is expected that topological phonons will also lead to rich and unconventional physics and the search of materials hosting topological phonons becomes a priority in the field. In electronic crystalline materials, a large part of the topological properties of Bloch states can be indicated by their symmetry eigenvalues in reciprocal space. This has been adapted to the high-throughput calculations of topological materials, and more than half of the stoichiometric materials on the databases are found to be topological insulators or semi-metals. Based on the existing phonon materials databases, here we have performed the first catalogue of topological phonon bands for more than ten thousand three-dimensional crystalline materials. Using topological quantum chemistry, we calculate the band representations, compatibility relations, and band topologies of each isolated set of phonon bands for the materials in the phonon databases. We have also calculated the real space invariants for all the topologically trivial bands and classified them as atomic and obstructed atomic bands. In particular, surface phonon modes (dispersion) are calculated on different cleavage planes for all the materials. Remarkably, we select more than one thousand "ideal" non-trivial phonon materials to fascinate the future experimental studies. All the data-sets obtained in the the high-throughput calculations are used to build a Topological Phonon Database., Comment: 8+535 pages, 187 figures, 21 tables. Adding magnetic flux to a band structure breaks Bloch's theorem by realizing a projective representation of the translation group. The resulting Hofstadter spectrum encodes the non-perturbative response of the bands to flux. Depending on their topology, adding flux can enforce a bulk gap closing (a Hofstadter semimetal) or boundary state pumping (a Hofstadter topological insulator). In this work, we present a real-space classification of these Hofstadter phases. We give topological indices in terms of symmetry-protected Real Space Invariants (RSIs) which encode bulk and boundary responses of fragile topological states to flux. In fact, we find that the flux periodicity in tight-binding models causes the symmetries which are broken by the magnetic field to reenter at strong flux where they form projective point group representations. We completely classify the reentrant projective point groups and find that the Schur multipliers which define them are Arahanov-Bohm phases calculated along the bonds of the crystal. We find that a nontrivial Schur multiplier is enough to predict and protect the Hofstadter response with only zero-flux topology.

Asynchronous events sequences are widely distributed in the natural world and human activities, such as earthquakes records, users activities in social media and so on. How to distill the information from these seemingly disorganized data is a persistent topic that researchers focus on. The one of the most useful model is the point process model, and on the basis, the researchers obtain many noticeable results. Moreover, in recent years, point process models on the foundation of neural networks, especially recurrent neural networks (RNN) are proposed and compare with the traditional models, their performance are greatly improved. Enlighten by transformer model, which can learning sequence data efficiently without recurrent and convolutional structure, transformer Hawkes process is come out, and achieves state-of-the-art performance. However, there is some research proving that the re-introduction of recursive calculations in transformer can further improve transformers performance. Thus, we come out with a new kind of transformer Hawkes process model, universal transformer Hawkes process (UTHP), which contains both recursive mechanism and self-attention mechanism, and to improve the local perception ability of the model, we also introduce convolutional neural network (CNN) in the position-wise-feed-forward part. We conduct experiments on several datasets to validate the effectiveness of UTHP and explore the changes after the introduction of the recursive mechanism. These experiments on multiple datasets demonstrate that the performance of our proposed new model has a certain improvement compared with the previous state-of-the-art models.

In recent years, mining the knowledge from asynchronous sequences by Hawkes process is a subject worthy of continued attention, and Hawkes processes based on the neural network have gradually become the most hotly researched fields, especially based on the recurrence neural network (RNN). However, these models still contain some inherent shortcomings of RNN, such as vanishing and exploding gradient and long-term dependency problems. Meanwhile, Transformer based on self-attention has achieved great success in sequential modeling like text processing and speech recognition. Although the Transformer Hawkes process (THP) has gained huge performance improvement, THPs do not effectively utilize the temporal information in the asynchronous events, for these asynchronous sequences, the event occurrence instants are as important as the types of events, while conventional THPs simply convert temporal information into position encoding and add them as the input of transformer. With this in mind, we come up with a new kind of Transformer-based Hawkes process model, Temporal Attention Augmented Transformer Hawkes Process (TAA-THP), we modify the traditional dot-product attention structure, and introduce the temporal encoding into attention structure. We conduct numerous experiments on a wide range of synthetic and real-life datasets to validate the performance of our proposed TAA-THP model, significantly improvement compared with existing baseline models on the different measurements is achieved, including log-likelihood on the test dataset, and prediction accuracies of event types and occurrence times. In addition, through the ablation studies, we vividly demonstrate the merit of introducing additional temporal attention by comparing the performance of the model with and without temporal attention.

Abstract. Most of the real world data we encounter are asynchronous event sequence, so the last decades have been characterized by the implementation of various point process into the field of social networks,electronic medical records and financial transactions. At the beginning, Hawkes process and its variants which can simulate simultaneously the self-triggering and mutual triggering patterns between different events in complex sequences in a clear and quantitative way are more popular.Later on, with the advances of neural network, neural Hawkes process has been proposed one after another, and gradually become a research hotspot. The proposal of the transformer Hawkes process (THP) has gained a huge performance improvement, so a new upsurge of the neural Hawkes process based on transformer is set off. However, THP does not make full use of the information of occurrence time and type of event in the asynchronous event sequence. It simply adds the encoding of event type conversion and the location encoding of time conversion to the source encoding. At the same time, the learner built from a single transformer will result in an inescapable learning bias. In order to mitigate these problems, we propose a tri-transformer Hawkes process (Tri-THP) model, in which the event and time information are added to the dot-product attention as auxiliary information to form a new multihead attention. The effectiveness of the Tri-THP is proved by a series of well-designed experiments on both real world and synthetic data.

Magic-angle ($\theta=1.05^\circ$) twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) has shown two seemingly contradictory characters: the localization and quantum-dot-like behavior in STM experiments, and delocalization in transport experiments. We construct a model, which naturally captures the two aspects, from the Bistritzer-MacDonald (BM) model in a first principle spirit. A set of local flat-band orbitals ($f$) centered at the AA-stacking regions are responsible to the localization. A set of extended topological conduction bands ($c$), which are at small energetic separation from the local orbitals, are responsible to the delocalization and transport. The topological flat bands of the BM model appear as a result of the hybridization of $f$- and $c$-electrons. This model then provides a new perspective for the strong correlation physics, which is now described as strongly correlated $f$-electrons coupled to nearly free topological semimetallic $c$-electrons - we hence name our model as the topological heavy fermion model. Using this model, we obtain the U(4) and U(4)$\times$U(4) symmetries as well as the correlated insulator phases and their energies. Simple rules for the ground states and their Chern numbers are derived. Moreover, features such as the large dispersion of the charge $\pm1$ excitations and the minima of the charge gap at the $\Gamma_M$ point can now, for the first time, be understood both qualitatively and quantitatively in a simple physical picture. Topologically trivial insulators come in two kinds: atomic, where the Wannier charge centers (WCCs) are localized on the atoms, and obstructed atomic, where the WCCs are located away from the atoms. The latter, which can exhibit interesting surface states and possibly have much larger band gaps than the topological insulators, have so far not been classified in three-dimensional (3D) crystalline materials. In this paper, we developed the 3D real space invariants (RSIs) for the 1651 Shubnikov space groups with the spin-orbit coupling and provide the full classification of 3D obstructed atomic insulators (OAIs) by the RSIs. We then apply the theory to the entire database of materials on the Topological Quantum Chemistry website and Topological Magnetic Materials website, obtaining all the OAIs so far existing in nature. We find that, out of the 34013 paramagnetic and 296 magnetic topologically trivial insulators, there are 3383 paramagnetic and 30 magnetic OAIs. All of them present a filling anomaly under certain open-boundary conditions and exhibit obstructed surface states (OSSs). We further refine the atomic insulator concept to obtain the orbital-selected OAIs (OOAIs), where the WCC of the system is located at a Wyckoff position occupied by an atom but forms a symmetric representation that does not belong to the outer-shell electrons of the given atom. In such a way, we obtain a further 121 OOAIs. Furthermore, we analyze the catalytic properties of one of the OAIs in a "proof of principle" experiment. By using the single crystal of 2H-MoS2 as a hydrogen evolution catalyst, we directly prove that the catalytic activities arise from the surfaces with OSSs. Enhancing valley splitting in SiGe heterostructures is a crucial task for developing silicon spin qubits. Complex SiGe heterostructures, sharing a common feature of four-monolayer (4ML) Ge layer next to the silicon quantum well (QW), have been computationally designed to have giant valley splitting approaching 9 meV. However, none of them has been fabricated may due to their complexity. Here, we remarkably simplify the original designed complex SiGe heterostructures by laying out the Si QW directly on the Ge substrate followed by capping a (Ge4Si4)n superlattice(SL) barrier with a small sacrifice on VS as it is reduced from a maximum of 8.7 meV to 5.2 meV. Even the smallest number of periods (n = 1) will also give a sizable VS of 1.6 meV, which is large enough for developing stable spin qubits. We also develop an effective Hamiltonian model to reveal the underlying microscopic physics of enhanced valley splitting by (Ge4Si4)n SL barriers. We find that the presence of the SL barrier will reduce the VS instead of enhancing it. Only the (Ge4Si4)n SL barriers with an extremely strong coupling with Si QW valley states provide a remarkable enhancement in VS. These findings lay a solid theoretical foundation for the realization of sufficiently large VS for Si qubits.

We show that introducing spin-singlet or spin-triplet superconductivity into twisted bilayer graphene induces higher-order topological superconductivity. $C_{2z}T$-protected corner states of Majorana Kramers pairs appear at the boundary between domains with opposite signs of pairing, and zero modes materialize in Abrikosov vortices. The topology of the superconducting phase originates from the anomaly [1] -- the absence of a lattice support -- of the single-valley band structure of twisted bilayer graphene, which is protected by $C_{2z}T$ and the particle-hole symmetry $\cal P$. We prove that any pairing (spin-singlet or spin-triplet) term preserving valley-U(1), spin-SU(2), time-reversal, $C_{2z}T$, and $\cal P$ must drive the system into a higher-order topological superconductor phase. Here spin-SU(2) is the global spin-SU(2) for the singlet pairing and a combination of two SU(2)'s in the two valleys for the triplet pairing. Using a Dirac Hamiltonian, we demonstrate the existence of corner modes and confirm this with numerical calculations. These corner states are stable even if the approximate particle-hole symmetry $\cal P$ is weakly broken, which is true in experimental setups. Finally, we suggest an experiment to detect the topological superconductivity: by observing the fractional Josephson effect in a TBG-TSC Josephson system., Comment: 6+31 pages, 3+8 figures

Topological band theory has achieved great success in the high-throughput search for topological band structures both in paramagnetic and magnetic crystal materials. However, a significant proportion of materials are topologically trivial insulators at the Fermi level. In this paper, we show that, remarkably, for a subset of the topologically trivial insulators, knowing only their electron number and the Wyckoff positions of the atoms we can separate them into two groups: the obstructed atomic insulator (OAI) and the atomic insulator (AI). The interesting group, the OAI, have a center of charge not localized on the atoms. Using the theory of topological quantum chemistry, in this work we first derive the necessary and sufficient conditions for a topologically trivial insulator to be a filling enforced obstructed atomic insulator (feOAI) in the 1651 Shubnikov space groups. Remarkably, the filling enforced criteria enable the identification of obstructed atomic bands without knowing the representations of the band structures. Hence, no ab-initio calculations are needed for the filling enforced criteria, although they are needed to obtain the band gaps. With the help of the Topological Quantum Chemistry website, we have performed a high-throughput search for feOAIs and have found that 957 ICSD entries (638 unique materials) are paramagnetic feOAIs, among which 738 (475) materials have an indirect gap. Topological electronic flatten bands near or at the Fermi level are a promising avenue towards unconventional superconductivity and correlated insulating states. However, the related experiments are mostly limited to the engineered materials, such as moire systems. Here we present a catalogue of all the three-dimensional stoichiometric materials with flat bands around the Fermi level that exist in nature. We consider 55,206 materials from the Inorganic Crystal Structure Database catalogued using the Topological Quantum Chemistry website which provides their structural parameters, space group (SG), band structure, density of states and topological characterization. We combine several direct signatures and properties of band flatness to a high-throughput analysis of all crystal structures. In particular, we identify materials hosting line-graph or bipartite sublattices - either in two or three dimensions - likely leading to flat bands. From this trove of information, we create the Materials Flatband Database website, a powerful search engine for future theoretical and experimental studies. We use it to extract a curated list of 2,379 materials, with among them 345 promising candidates, potentially hosting flat bands whose charge centers are not strongly localized on the atomic sites. We showcase five representative materials: KAg[CN]2 in SG 163 $(P\bar{3}1c)$, Pb2Sb2O7 in SG 227 $(Fd\bar{3}m)$, Rb2CaH4 in SG 139 $(I4/mmm)$, Ca2NCl in SG 166 $(R\bar{3}m)$ and WO3 in SG 221 $(Pm\bar{3}m)$. Exotic phases of matter emerge from the interplay between strong electron interactions and non-trivial topology. Owing to their lack of dispersion at the single-particle level, systems harboring flat bands are excellent testbeds for strongly interacting physics, with twisted bilayer graphene serving as a prime example. On the other hand, existing theoretical models for obtaining flat bands in crystalline materials, such as the line-graph formalism, are often too restrictive for real-life material realizations. Here we present a generic technique for constructing perfectly flat bands from bipartite crystalline lattices. Our prescription encapsulates and generalizes the various flat band models in the literature, being applicable to systems with any orbital content, with or without spin-orbit coupling. Using Topological Quantum Chemistry, we build a complete topological classification in terms of symmetry eigenvalues of all the gapped and gapless flat bands, for all 1651 Magnetic Space Groups. In addition, we derive criteria for the existence of symmetry-protected band touching points between the flat and dispersive bands, and we identify the gapped flat bands as prime candidates for fragile topological phases. Exotic high-rank multipolar order parameters have been found to be unexpectedly active in more and more correlated materials in recent years. Such multipoles are usually dubbed as "Hidden Orders" since they are insensitive to common experimental probes. Theoretically, it is also difficult to predict multipolar orders via \textit{ab initio} calculations in real materials. Here, we present an efficient method to predict possible multipoles in materials based on linear response theory under random phase approximation. Using this method, we successfully predict two pure meta-stable magnetic octupolar states in monolayer $\alpha$-\ce{RuCl3}, which is confirmed by self-consistent unrestricted Hartree-Fock calculations. We then demonstrate that these octupolar states can be stabilized in monolayer $\alpha$-\ce{RuI3}, one of which becomes the octupolar ground state. Furthermore, we also predict a fingerprint of orthogonal magnetization pattern produced by the octupole moment, which can be easily detected by experiment. Various exotic topological phases of Floquet systems have been shown to arise from crystalline symmetries. Yet, a general theory for Floquet topology that is applicable to all crystalline symmetry groups is still in need. In this work, we propose such a theory for (effectively) non-interacting Floquet crystals. We first introduce quotient winding data to classify the dynamics of the Floquet crystals with equivalent symmetry data, and then construct dynamical symmetry indicators (DSIs) to sufficiently indicate the "inherently dynamical" Floquet crystals. The DSI and quotient winding data, as well as the symmetry data, are all computationally efficient since they only involve a small number of Bloch momenta. We demonstrate the high efficiency by computing all elementary DSI sets for all spinless and spinful plane groups using the mathematical theory of monoid, and find a large number of different nontrivial classifications, which contain both first-order and higher-order 2+1D anomalous Floquet topological phases. Using the framework, we further find a new 3+1D anomalous Floquet second-order topological insulator (AFSOTI) phase with anomalous chiral hinge modes., Comment: Close to the published version

We derive the Hamiltonian for trilayer moir\'e systems with the Coulomb interaction projected onto the bands near the charge neutrality point. Motivated by the latest experimental results, we focus on the twisted symmetric trilayer graphene (TSTG) with a mirror-symmetry with respect to the middle layer. We provide a full symmetry analysis of the non-interacting Hamiltonian with a perpendicular displacement field coupling the band structure made otherwise of the twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) and the high velocity Dirac fermions, and we identify a hidden non-local symmetry of the problem. In the presence of this displacement field, we construct an approximate single-particle model, akin to the tripod model for TBG, capturing the essence of non-interacting TSTG. We also derive more quantitative perturbation schemes for the low-energy physics of TSTG with displacement field, obtaining the corresponding eigenstates. This allows us to obtain the Coulomb interaction Hamiltonian projected in the active band TSTG wavefunctions and derive the full many-body Hamiltonian of the system. We also provide an efficient parameterization of the interacting Hamiltonian. Finally, we show that the discrete symmetries at the single-particle level promote the $\mathrm{U} \left( 2 \right) \times \mathrm{U} \left( 2 \right)$ spin-valley symmetry to enlarged symmetry groups of the interacting problem under different limits. The interacting part of the Hamiltonian exhibits a large $\mathrm{U} \left( 4 \right) \times \mathrm{U} \left( 4 \right) \times \mathrm{U} \left( 4 \right) \times \mathrm{U} \left( 4 \right)$ symmetry in the chiral limit. Moreover, by identifying a new symmetry which we dub spatial many-body charge conjugation, we show that the physics of TSTG is symmetric around charge neutrality., Comment: 18+43 pages, 2+7 figures

The axion insulator is a higher-order topological insulator protected by inversion symmetry. We show that under quenched disorder respecting inversion symmetry {\it on average}, the topology of the axion insulator stays robust, and an intermediate metallic phase in which states are delocalized is unavoidable at the transition from an axion insulator to a trivial insulator. We derive this conclusion from general arguments, from classical percolation theory, and from the numerical study of a 3D quantum network model simulating a disordered axion insulator through a layer construction. We find the localization length critical exponent near the delocalization transition to be $\nu=1.42\pm 0.12$. We further show that this delocalization transition is stable even to weak breaking of the average inversion symmetry, up to a critical strength. The geometric properties of a lattice can have profound consequences on its band spectrum. For example, symmetry constraints and geometric frustration can give rise to topologicially nontrivial and dispersionless bands, respectively. Line-graph lattices are a perfect example of both of these features: their lowest energy bands are perfectly flat, and here we develop a formalism to connect some of their geometric properties with the presence or absence of fragile topology in their flat bands. Using exact diagonalization, we study the projected Hamiltonian with Coulomb interaction in the 8 flat bands of first magic angle twisted bilayer graphene. Employing the U(4) (U(4)$\times$U(4)) symmetries in the nonchiral (chiral) flat band limit, we reduced the Hilbert space to an extent which allows for study around $\nu=\pm 3,\pm2,\pm1$ fillings. In the first chiral limit $w_0/w_1=0$ where $w_0$ ($w_1$) is the $AA$ ($AB$) stacking hopping, we find that the ground-states at these fillings are extremely well-described by Slater determinants in a so-called Chern basis, and the exactly solvable charge $\pm1$ excitations found in [arXiv:2009.14200] are the lowest charge excitations up to system sizes $8\times8$ (for restricted Hilbert space) in the chiral-flat limit. We also find that the Flat Metric Condition (FMC) used in [arXiv:2009.11301,2009.11872,2009.12376,2009.13530,2009.14200] for obtaining a series of exact ground-states and excitations holds in a large parameter space. For $\nu=-3$, the ground state is the spin and valley polarized Chern insulator with $\nu_C=\pm1$ at $w_0/w_1\lesssim0.9$ (0.3) with (without) FMC. At $\nu=-2$, we can only numerically access the valley polarized sector, and we find a spin ferromagnetic phase when $w_0/w_1\gtrsim0.5t$ where $t\in[0,1]$ is the factor of rescaling of the actual TBG bandwidth, and a spin singlet phase otherwise, confirming the perturbative calculation [arXiv:2009.13530]. The analytic FMC ground state is, however, predicted in the intervalley coherent sector which we cannot access [arXiv:2009.13530]. For $\nu=-3$ with/without FMC, when $w_0/w_1$ is large, the finite-size gap $\Delta$ to the neutral excitations vanishes, leading to phase transitions. Further analysis of the ground state momentum sectors at $\nu=-3$ suggests a competition among (nematic) metal, momentum $M_M$ ($\pi$) stripe and $K_M$-CDW orders at large $w_0/w_1$., Comment: 22+26 pages, 15+20 figures. We find exact analytic expressions for the energies and wavefunctions of the charged and neutral excitations above the exact ground states (at rational filling per unit cell) of projected Coulomb Hamiltonians in twisted bilayer graphene. Our exact expressions are valid for any form of the Coulomb interaction and any form of $AA$ and $AB/BA$ tunneling. The single charge excitation energy is a convolution of the Coulomb potential with a quantum geometric tensor of the TBG bands. The neutral excitations are (high-symmetry group) magnons, and their dispersion is analytically calculated in terms of the form factors of the active bands in TBG. The two-charge excitation energy and wavefunctions are also obtained, and a sufficient condition on the graphene eigenstates for obtaining a Cooper-pair from Coulomb interactions is obtained. For the actual TBG bands at the first magic angle, we can analytically show that the Cooper pair binding energy is zero in all such projected Coulomb models, implying that either phonons and/or non-zero kinetic energy are needed for superconductivity. Since the [Phys. Rev. Lett. 122, 246401] showed that the kinetic energy bounds on the superexchange energy are less $10^{-3}$ in Coulomb units, the phonon mechanism becomes then very likely. If nonetheless the superconductivity is due to kinetic terms which render the bands non-flat, one prediction of our theory is that the highest $T_c$ would not occur at the highest DOS., Comment: References added; Excitations at odd fillings in the flat nonchiral limit added

We derive the exact insulator ground states of the projected Hamiltonian of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) flat bands with Coulomb interactions in various limits, and study the perturbations away from these limits. We define the (first) chiral limit where the AA stacking hopping is zero, and a flat limit with exactly flat bands. In the chiral-flat limit, the TBG Hamiltonian has a U(4)$\times$U(4) symmetry, and we find that the exact ground states at integer filling $-4\le \nu\le 4$ relative to charge neutrality are Chern insulators of Chern numbers $\nu_C=4-|\nu|,2-|\nu|,\cdots,|\nu|-4$, all of which are degenerate. This confirms recent experiments where Chern insulators are found to be competitive low-energy states of TBG. When the chiral-flat limit is reduced to the nonchiral-flat limit which has a U(4) symmetry, we find $\nu=0,\pm2$ has exact ground states of Chern number $0$, while $\nu=\pm1,\pm3$ has perturbative ground states of Chern number $\nu_C=\pm1$, which are U(4) ferromagnetic. In the chiral-nonflat limit with a different U(4) symmetry, different Chern number states are degenerate up to second order perturbations. In the realistic nonchiral-nonflat case, we find that the perturbative insulator states with Chern number $\nu_C=0$ ($0<|\nu_C|<4-|\nu|$) at integer fillings $\nu$ are fully (partially) intervalley coherent, while the insulator states with Chern number $|\nu_C|=4-|\nu|$ are valley polarized. However, for $0<|\nu_C|\le4-|\nu|$, the fully intervalley coherent states are highly competitive (0.005meV/electron higher). At nonzero magnetic field $|B|>0$, a first-order phase transition for $\nu=\pm1,\pm2$ from Chern number $\nu_C=\text{sgn}(\nu B)(2-|\nu|)$ to $\nu_C=\text{sgn}(\nu B)(4-|\nu|)$ is expected, which agrees with recent experimental observations. We derive the explicit Hamiltonian of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) with Coulomb interaction projected into the flat bands, and study the symmetries of the Hamiltonian. First, we show that all projected TBG Hamiltonians can be written as Positive Semidefinite Hamiltonian, the first example of which was found in [PRL 122, 246401]. We then prove that the interacting TBG Hamiltonian exhibits an exact U(4) symmetry in the exactly flat band (nonchiral-flat) limit. We further define, besides a first chiral limit where the AA stacking hopping is zero, a new second chiral limit where the AB/BA stacking hopping is zero. In the first chiral-flat limit (or second chiral-flat limit) with exactly flat bands, the TBG is enhanced to have an exact U(4)$\times$U(4) symmetry, whose generators are different between the two chiral limits. While in the first chiral limit and in the non-chiral case these symmetries have been found in [PRX 10, 031034] for the $8$ lowest bands, we here prove that they are valid for projection into any $8 n_\text{max}$ particle-hole symmetric TBG bands, with $n_\text{max}>1$ being the practical case for small twist angles $<1^\circ$. Furthermore, in the first or second chiral-nonflat limit without flat bands, an exact U(4) symmetry still remains. We also elucidate the link between the U(4) symmetry presented here and the similar but different U(4) of [PRL 122, 246401]. Furthermore, we show that our projected Hamiltonian can be viewed as the normal-ordered Coulomb interaction plus a Hartree-Fock term from passive bands, and exhibits a many-body particle-hole symmetry which renders the physics symmetric around charge neutrality. We also provide an efficient parameterization of the interacting Hamiltonian. We show that the entire continuous model of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) (and not just the two active bands) with particle-hole symmetry is anomalous and hence incompatible with a lattice model. Previous works, e.g., [Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 036401], [Phys. Rev. X 9, 021013], [Phys. Rev. B 99, 195455], and others [1-4] found that the two flat bands in TBG possess a fragile topology protected by the $C_{2z}T$ symmetry. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 036401] also pointed out an approximate particle-hole symmetry ($\mathcal{P}$) in the continuous model of TBG. In this work, we numerically confirm that $\mathcal{P}$ is indeed a good approximation for TBG and show that the fragile topology of the two flat bands is enhanced to a $\mathcal{P}$-protected stable topology. This stable topology implies $4l+2$ ($l\in\mathbb{N}$) Dirac points between the middle two bands. The $\mathcal{P}$-protected stable topology is robust against arbitrary gap closings between the middle two bands the other bands. We further show that, remarkably, this $\mathcal{P}$-protected stable topology, as well as the corresponding $4l + 2$ Dirac points, cannot be realized in lattice models that preserve both $C_{2z}T$ and $\mathcal{P}$ symmetries. In other words, the continuous model of TBG is anomalous and cannot be realized on lattices. We investigate the Twisted Bilayer Graphene (TBG) model to obtain an analytic understanding of its energetics and wavefunctions needed for many-body calculations. We provide an approximation scheme which first elucidates why the BM $K_M$-point centered calculation containing only $4$ plane-waves provides a good analytical value for the first magic angle. The approximation scheme also elucidates why most many-body matrix elements in the Coulomb Hamiltonian projected to the active bands can be neglected. By applying our approximation scheme at the first magic angle to a $\Gamma_M$-point centered model of 6 plane-waves, we analytically understand the small $\Gamma_M$-point gap between the active and passive bands in the isotropic limit $w_0=w_1$. Furthermore, we analytically calculate the group velocities of passive bands in the isotropic limit, and show that they are \emph{almost} doubly degenerate, while no symmetry forces them to be. Furthermore, away from $\Gamma_M$ and $K_M$ points, we provide an explicit analytical perturbative understanding as to why the TBG bands are flat at the first magic angle, despite it is defined only by vanishing $K_M$-point Dirac velocity. We derive analytically a connected "magic manifold" $w_1=2\sqrt{1+w_0^2}-\sqrt{2+3w_0^2}$, on which the bands remain extremely flat as $w_0$ is tuned between the isotropic ($w_0=w_1$) and chiral ($w_0=0$) limits. We analytically show why going away from the isotropic limit by making $w_0$ less (but not larger) than $w_1$ increases the $\Gamma_M$- point gap between active and passive bands. Finally, perturbatively, we provide an analytic $\Gamma_M$ point $k\cdot p$ $2$-band model that reproduces the TBG band structure and eigenstates in a certain $w_0,w_1$ parameter range. Further refinement of this model suggests a possible faithful $2$-band $\Gamma_M$ point $k\cdot p$ model in the full $w_0, w_1$ parameter range., Comment: 25+21 pages, 13+7 figures. Flat-bands in magic angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) have recently emerged as a rich platform to explore strong correlations, superconductivity and mag-netism. However, the phases of MATBG in magnetic field, and what they reveal about the zero-field phase diagram remain relatively unchartered. Here we use magneto-transport and Hall measurements to reveal a rich sequence of wedge-like regions of quantized Hall conductance with Chern numbers C = +(-)1, +(-)2, +(-)3, +(-)4 which nucleate from integer fillings of the moire unit cell v = +(-)3, +(-)2, +(-)1, 0 correspondingly. We interpret these phases as spin and valley polarized Chern insulators, equivalent to quantum Hall ferro-magnets. The exact sequence and correspondence of Chern numbers and filling factors suggest that these states are driven directly by electronic interactions which specifically break time-reversal symmetry in the system. We further study quantum magneto-oscillation in the yet unexplored higher energy dispersive bands with a Rashba-like dis-persion. Analysis of Landau level crossings enables a parameter-free comparison to a newly derived magic series of level crossings in magnetic field and provides constraints on the parameters w0 and w1 of the Bistritzer-MacDonald MATBG Hamiltonian. Over-all, our data provides direct insights into the complex nature of symmetry breaking in MATBG and allows for quantitative tests of the proposed microscopic scenarios for its electronic phases.

The Hofstadter problem is the lattice analog of the quantum Hall effect and is the paradigmatic example of topology induced by an applied magnetic field. Conventionally, the Hofstadter problem involves adding $\sim 10^4$ T magnetic fields to a trivial band structure. In this work, we show that when a magnetic field is added to an initially topological band structure, a wealth of remarkable possible phases emerges. Remarkably, we find topological phases which cannot be realized in any crystalline insulators. We prove that threading magnetic flux through a Hamiltonian with nonzero Chern number enforces a phase transition at fixed filling and that a 2D Hamiltonian with nontrivial Kane-Mele invariant produces a 3D TI or 3D weak TI phase in periodic flux. We then study fragile topology protected by the product of two-fold rotation and time-reversal and show that there exists a 3D higher order TI phase where corner modes are pumped by flux. We show that a model of twisted bilayer graphene realizes this phase. Our results rely primarily on the magnetic translation group which exists at rational values of the flux. The advent of Moir\'e lattices also renders our work relevant experimentally. We present a systematic study on the strange and multi-strange particles production in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{S_{NN}} = 2.76$ TeV based on the PACIAE model simulations. Two different mechanisms, namely the single string structure variations and multiple string interactions, are implemented in the simulations. These modifications give rise to an enhancement of the string tension value involved in the Lund string fragmentation framework and generate more strange particles in the hadronic final state. By comparing the simulation results with the ALICE experimental data, it turns out that the inclusion of the variable effective string tension in the PACIAE model is capable to reach an improved agreement between theory and experiment on the strangeness production in Pb+Pb collisions., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1806.11390

Gapless criteria that can efficiently determine whether a crystal is gapless or not are particularly useful for identifying topological semimetals. In this work, we propose a sufficient gapless criterion for three-dimensional non-interacting crystals, based on the simplified expressions for the bulk average value of the static axion field. The brief logic is that two different simplified expressions give the same value in an insulator, and thus the gapless phase can be detected by the mismatch of them. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the gapless criterion in the magnetic systems with space groups 26 and 13, where mirror, glide, and inversion symmetries provide the simplified expressions. In particular, the gapless criterion can identify gapless phases that are missed by the symmetry representation approach, as illustrated by space group 26. We calculate the electronic structures of Germanium nanowires by taking the effective-mass theory. The electron and hole states at the G-valley are studied via the eight-band k.p theory. For the [111] L-valley, we expand the envelope wave function using Bessel functions to calculate the energies of the electron states for the first time. The results show that the energy dispersion curves of electron states at the L-valley are almost parabolic irrespective of the radius of Germanium nanowires. Based on the electronic structures, the density of states of Germanium nanowires are also obtained, and we find that the conduction band density of states mostly come from the electron states at the L-valley because of the eight equivalent degenerate L points in Germanium. Furthermore, the optical gain spectra of Germanium nanowires are investigated. The calculations show that there are no optical gain along z direction even though the injected carrier density is 4x1019 cm-3 when the doping concentration is zero, and a remarkable optical gain can be obtained when the injected carrier density is close to 1x1020 cm-3, since a large amount of electrons will prefer to occupy the low-energy L-valley. In this case, the negative optical gain will be encountered considering free-carrier absorption loss as the increase of the diameter. We also investigate the optical gain along z direction as functions of the doping concentration and injected carrier density for the doped Germanium nanowires. When taking into account free-carrier absorption loss, the calculated results show that a positive net peak gain is most likely to occur in the heavily doped nanowires with smaller diameters. Our theoretical studies are valuable in providing a guidance for the applications of Germanium nanowires in the field of microelectronics and optoelectronics.

In this paper, we propose a new type of bulk-boundary correspondence as a generic approach to theoretically and experimentally detect fragile topological states. When the fragile phase can be written as a difference of a trivial atomic insulator and the so-called obstructed atomic insulator, the gap between the fragile phase and other bands must close under a specific novel twist of the boundary condition of the system. We explicitly work out all the twisted boundary conditions (TBC) that can detect all the 2D fragile phases implied by symmetry eigenvalues in all wallpaper groups. We develop the concept of real space invariants - local good quantum numbers in real space - which fully characterize the eigenvalue fragile phases. We show that the number of unavoidable level crossings under the twisted boundary condition is completely determined by the real space invariants. Symmetries crucially underlie the classification of topological phases of matter. Most materials, both natural as well as architectured, possess crystalline symmetries. Recent theoretical works unveiled that these crystalline symmetries can stabilize fragile Bloch bands that challenge our very notion of topology: while answering to the most basic definition of topology, one can trivialize these bands through the addition of trivial Bloch bands. Here, we fully characterize the symmetry properties of the response of an acoustic metamaterial to establish the fragile nature of the low-lying Bloch bands. InN superconductivity is very special among III-V semiconductors, because other III-V semiconductor (like GaAs, GaN, InP, InAs etc.) usually lacks strong covalent bonding and seldom shows superconductivity at low-temperature. In this paper, via current-voltage(I-V) measurement, we probe the superconducting phase transitions in InN. The possible connection with those chemical-unstable phase separated inclusions, like metallic indium or In2O3, was removed by HCl acid etching. It finds InN samples can show different phase transition behaviors. The vortex-glass (VG) to liquid transition, which is typical in type-II superconductors, is observed in the sample with large InN grain size. In contrast, the small grain-sized sample's superconducting properties are sensitive to acid etching, shows a transition into a non-zero resistance state at the limit of temperature approaches zero. Our work suggests that the grain size and inter-grain coupling may be two key factors for realizing InN superconductivity. We study a Kitaev model on a square lattice, which describes topologically trivial superconductor when gap opens, while supports topological gapless phase when gap closes. The degeneracy points are characterized by two vortices in momentum space, with opposite winding numbers, which are not removable unless meet together. We show rigorously that the topological gapless phase always hosts a partial Majorana flat band edge modes in a ribbon geometry, although such a single band model has zero Chern number as a topologically trivial superconductor. The flat band disappears when the gapless phase becomes topologically trivial, associating with the mergence of two vortices. Numerical simulation indicates that the flat band is robust against the disorder. This finding indicates that the bulk-edge correspondence can be extended to superconductors in the topologically trivial regime as recently proposed in Ref. In this study, two ideal triple degenerate point (TDP) semimetals were predicted, namely, HfIrAs and HfIrBi, that exhibit clean TDPs around the fermi level. At the atomic level, the origin of the TDP was analyzed, and when combined with the low-energy effective 4-band model, it was found that the bulk inversion asymmetry directly determines the formation of the TDP for cubic crystals. The projected surface states and corresponding patterns of the fermi arcs with and without tensile strain were investigated for two different crystal face orientations [(111) and (110)], both of which could be detected using photoemission spectroscopy. In addition, the disappearance of the spin texture, which was studied in strained HgTe bulk states, was also observed in the surface states. The results of this study indicate that the two materials are unique platforms on which emergent phenomena, such as the interplay between the TDP of semimetals and superconductivity, can be explored., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure

A single unit cell contains all the information about the bulk system, including the topological feature. The topological invariant can be extracted from a finite system, which consists of several unit cells under certain environment, such as a non-Hermitian external field. We investigate a non- Hermitian finite-size Kitaev chain with PT-symmetric chemical potentials. Exact solution at the symmetric point shows that Majorana edge modes can emerge as the coalescing states at exceptional points and PT symmetry breaking states. The coalescing zero mode is the finite-size projection of the conventional degenerate zero modes in a Hermitian infinite system with the open boundary condition. It indicates a variant of the bulk-edge correspondence: The number of Majorana edge modes in a finite non-Hermitian system can be the topological invariant to identify the topological phase of the corresponding bulk Hermitian system., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

We study two coupled Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chains system, which is shown to contain rich quantum phases associated with topological invariants protected by symmetries. In the weak coupling region, the system supports two non-trivial topological insulating phases, characterized by winding number N = +1 or -1, and two types of edge states. The boundary between the two topological phases arises from two band closing points, which exhibit topological characteristics in one-dimensional k space. By mapping Bloch states on a vector field in k space, the band degenerate points correspond to a pair of kinks of the field, with opposite topological charges. Two topological nodal points move and merge as the inter-chain coupling strength varies. This topological invariant is protected by the translational and inversion symmetries, rather than the antiunitary operation. Furthermore, we find that when a pair of nodal points is created, a second order quantum phase transition (QPT) occurs, associating with a gap closing and spontaneously symmetry breaking.
