Intense electromagnetic fields can result in dramatic changes in the electronic properties of solids. These changes are commonly studied using optical probes of the modified electronic structure. Here we use optical-scanning tunneling microscopy (optical-STM) equipped with near-field continuous wave (CW) laser excitation to directly measure the electronic structure of light-dressed states in a monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) semiconductor, WSe2. We find that the effective tunneling gap and tunneling density of states are strongly influenced by the intensity of the electromagnetic field when the applied field is resonant with the bandgap of the semiconductor. Our findings indicate that CW laser excitation can be used to generate light-dressed electronic states of quantum materials when confined strongly to the nanoscale.

The ability to resolve photon numbers is crucial in quantum information science and technology, driving the development of detectors with intrinsic photon-number resolving (PNR) capabilities. Although transition edge sensors represent the state-of-the-art in PNR performance, superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) offer superior efficiency, speed, noise reduction, and timing precision. Directly inferring photon numbers, however, has only recently become feasible due to advances in readout technology. Despite this, photon-number discrimination remains constrained by the nanowire's electrical properties and readout jitter. In this work, we employ waveguide-integrated SNSPDs and time-resolved measurements to explore how the nanowire kinetic inductance and system jitter affect PNR capabilities. By analyzing the latency time of the photon detection, we can resolve changes in the rising edge of the detection pulse. We find that lower jitter as well as increased kinetic inductance enhances the pulse separation for different photon numbers and improves the PNR capability. Enhancing the kinetic inductance from 165 nH to 872 nH improves PNR quality by 12%, 31% and 23% over the first three photon numbers, though at the cost of reducing the detector's count rate from 165 Mcps to 19 Mcps. Handling orientations of robots and objects is a crucial aspect of many applications. Yet, ever so often, there is a lack of mathematical correctness when dealing with orientations, especially in learning pipelines involving, for example, artificial neural networks. In this paper, we investigate reinforcement learning with orientations and propose a simple modification of the network's input and output that adheres to the Lie group structure of orientations. As a result, we obtain an easy and efficient implementation that is directly usable with existing learning libraries and achieves significantly better performance than other common orientation representations. We briefly introduce Lie theory specifically for orientations in robotics to motivate and outline our approach. Subsequently, a thorough empirical evaluation of different combinations of orientation representations for states and actions demonstrates the superior performance of our proposed approach in different scenarios, including: direct orientation control, end effector orientation control, and pick-and-place tasks., Comment: Submitted to ICRA 2025

This research explores the enhancement of lunar landing precision through an advanced structured light system, integrating machine learning, Iterative Learning Control (ILC) and Structured Illumination Microscopy (SIM) techniques. By employing Moire fringe patterns for high-precision scanning maneuvers, the study addresses the limitations of conventional structured light systems. A nonlinear mathematical optimization model is developed to refine the world model, optimizing oscillation frequency and amplitude to improve resolution. The field of single-cell biology is growing rapidly and is generating large amounts of data from a variety of species, disease conditions, tissues, and organs. Coordinated efforts such as CZI CELLxGENE, HuBMAP, Broad Institute Single Cell Portal, and DISCO, allow researchers to access large volumes of curated datasets. Although the majority of the data is from scRNAseq experiments, a wide range of other modalities are represented as well. These resources have created an opportunity to build and expand the computational biology ecosystem to develop tools necessary for data reuse, and for extracting novel biological insights. Here, we highlight achievements made so far, areas where further development is needed, and specific challenges that need to be overcome.

Graphene is a privileged 2D platform for hosting confined light-matter excitations known as surface plasmon-polaritons (SPPs), as it possesses low intrinsic losses with a high degree of optical confinement. However, the inherently isotropic optical properties of graphene limit its ability to guide and focus SPPs, making it less suitable than anisotropic elliptical and hyperbolic materials as a platform for polaritonic lensing and canalization. Here, we present the graphene/CrSBr heterostructure as an engineered 2D interface that hosts highly anisotropic SPP propagation over a wide range of frequencies in the mid-infrared and terahertz. Using a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM), and first-principles calculations, we demonstrate mutual doping in excess of 10$^{13}$ cm$^{-2}$ holes/electrons between the interfacial layers of graphene/CrSBr heterostructures. SPPs in graphene activated by charge transfer interact with charge-induced anisotropic intra- and interband transitions in the interfacial doped CrSBr, leading to preferential SPP propagation along the quasi-1D chains that compose each CrSBr layer. This multifaceted proximity effect both creates SPPs and endows them with anisotropic transport and propagation lengths that differ by an order-of-magnitude between the two in-plane crystallographic axes of CrSBr.

Dynamic critical fluctuations in magnetic materials encode important information about magnetic ordering in the associated critical exponents. Using nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond, we implement $T_2$ (spin-decoherence) noise magnetometry to study critical dynamics in a 2D Van der Waals magnet CrSBr. By analyzing NV decoherence on time scales approaching the characteristic correlation time $\tau_c$ of critical fluctuations, we extract the critical exponent $\nu$ for the correlation length. Our result deviates from the Ising prediction and highlights the role of long-range dipolar interactions in 2D CrSBr. Furthermore, analyzing the divergence of the correlation length suggests the possibility of 2D-XY criticality in CrSBr in a temperature window near $T_C$ where static magnetic domains are absent. In addition to a plethora of emergent phenomena, the spatial topology of optical vortices enables an array of applications spanning communications to quantum photonics. Nonlinear optics is essential in this context, providing access to an infinitely large set of quantum states associated with the orbital angular momentum of light. Nevertheless, the realization of such processes have failed to keep pace with the ever-growing need to shrink the fundamental length-scale of photonic technologies to the nanometer regime6. Here, we push the boundaries of vortex nonlinear optics to the ultimate limits of material dimensionality. By exploiting second and third-order frequency-mixing processes in semiconducting monolayers, we demonstrate the independent manipulation of the wavelength, orbital angular momentum, and spatial distribution of vortex light-fields. Due to the atomically-thin nature of the host quantum material, this control spans a broad spectral bandwidth in a highly-integrable platform, unconstrained by the traditional limits of bulk nonlinear optical materials. Our work heralds a new avenue for ultra-compact and scalable hybrid nanotechnologies empowered by twisted nonlinear light-matter interactions in van der Waals quantum nanomaterials.

Mechanical force is an essential feature for many physical and biological processes.1-12 Remote measurement of mechanical signals with high sensitivity and spatial resolution is needed for diverse applications, including robotics,13 biophysics,14-20 energy storage,21-24 and medicine.25-27 Nanoscale luminescent force sensors excel at measuring piconewton forces,28-32 while larger sensors have proven powerful in probing micronewton forces.33,34 However, large gaps remain in the force magnitudes that can be probed remotely from subsurface or interfacial sites, and no individual, non-invasive sensor is capable of measuring over the large dynamic range needed to understand many systems.35,36 Here, we demonstrate Tm3+-doped avalanching nanoparticle37 force sensors that can be addressed remotely by deeply penetrating near-infrared (NIR) light and can detect piconewton to micronewton forces with a dynamic range spanning more than four orders of magnitude. Using atomic force microscopy coupled with single-nanoparticle optical spectroscopy, we characterize the mechanical sensitivity of the photon avalanching process and reveal its exceptional force responsiveness. By manipulating the Tm3+ concentrations and energy transfer within the nanosensors, we demonstrate different optical force-sensing modalities, including mechanobrightening and mechanochromism. The adaptability of these nanoscale optical force sensors, along with their multiscale sensing capability, enable operation in the dynamic and versatile environments present in real-world, complex structures spanning biological organisms to nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS).

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the standard modality to understand human brain structure and function in vivo (antemortem). Decades of research in human neuroimaging has led to the widespread development of methods and tools to provide automated volume-based segmentations and surface-based parcellations which help localize brain functions to specialized anatomical regions. Recently ex vivo (postmortem) imaging of the brain has opened-up avenues to study brain structure at sub-millimeter ultra high-resolution revealing details not possible to observe with in vivo MRI. Unfortunately, there has been limited methodological development in ex vivo MRI primarily due to lack of datasets and limited centers with such imaging resources. Therefore, in this work, we present one-of-its-kind dataset of 82 ex vivo T2w whole brain hemispheres MRI at 0.3 mm isotropic resolution spanning Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. We adapted and developed a fast and easy-to-use automated surface-based pipeline to parcellate, for the first time, ultra high-resolution ex vivo brain tissue at the native subject space resolution using the Desikan-Killiany-Tourville (DKT) brain atlas. This allows us to perform vertex-wise analysis in the template space and thereby link morphometry measures with pathology measurements derived from histology. We will open-source our dataset docker container, Jupyter notebooks for ready-to-use out-of-the-box set of tools and command line options to advance ex vivo MRI clinical brain imaging research on the project webpage.

Optically bistable materials respond to a single input with two possible optical outputs, contingent upon excitation history. Such materials would be ideal for optical switching and memory, yet limited understanding of intrinsic optical bistability (IOB) prevents development of nanoscale IOB materials suitable for devices. Here, we demonstrate IOB in Nd3+-doped KPb2Cl5 avalanching nanoparticles (ANPs), which switch with high contrast between luminescent and non-luminescent states, with hysteresis characteristic of bistability. We elucidate a nonthermal mechanism in which IOB originates from suppressed nonradiative relaxation in Nd3+ ions and from the positive feedback of photon avalanching, resulting in extreme, >200th-order optical nonlinearities. Modulation of laser pulsing tunes hysteresis widths, and dual-laser excitation enables transistor-like optical switching. This control over nanoscale IOB establishes ANPs for photonic devices in which light is used to manipulate light.

Nonlinear optics lies at the heart of classical and quantum light generation. The invention of periodic poling revolutionized nonlinear optics and its commercial applications by enabling robust quasi-phase-matching in crystals such as lithium niobate. However, reaching useful frequency conversion efficiencies requires macroscopic dimensions, limiting further technology development and integration. Here we realize a periodically poled van der Waals semiconductor (3R-MoS$_2$). Due to its exceptional nonlinearity, we achieve macroscopic frequency conversion efficiency over a microscopic thickness of only 1.2${\mu}$m, $10-100\times$ thinner than current systems with similar performances. Due to unique intrinsic cavity effects, the thickness-dependent quasi-phase-matched second harmonic signal surpasses the usual quadratic enhancement by $50\%$. Further, we report the broadband generation of photon pairs at telecom wavelengths via quasi-phase-matched spontaneous parametric down-conversion. This work opens the new and unexplored field of phase-matched nonlinear optics with microscopic van der Waals crystals, unlocking applications that require simple, ultra-compact technologies such as on-chip entangled photon-pair sources for integrated quantum circuitry and sensing.

The advancement of quantum photonic technologies relies on the ability to precisely control the degrees of freedom of optically active states. Here, we realize real-time, room-temperature tunable strong plasmon-exciton coupling in 2D semiconductor monolayers enabled by a general approach that combines strain engineering plus force- and voltage-adjustable plasmonic nanocavities. We show that the exciton energy and nanocavity plasmon resonance can be controllably toggled in concert by applying pressure with a plasmonic nanoprobe, allowing in operando control of detuning and coupling strength, with observed Rabi splittings >100 meV. Leveraging correlated force spectroscopy, nano-photoluminescence (nano-PL) and nano-Raman measurements, augmented with electromagnetic simulations, we identify distinct polariton bands and dark polariton states, and map their evolution as a function of nanogap and strain tuning. Uniquely, the system allows for manipulation of coupling strength over a range of cavity parameters without dramatically altering the detuning. Further, we establish that the tunable strong coupling is robust under multiple pressing cycles and repeated experiments over multiple nanobubbles. Finally, we show that the nanogap size can be directly modulated via an applied DC voltage between the substrate and plasmonic tip, highlighting the inherent nature of the concept as a plexcitonic nano-electro-mechanical system (NEMS). We develop a general description of how information propagates through a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) system based on the method of characteristics and use that to formulate numerical boundary conditions (BCs) that are intrinsically consistent with the MHD equations. Our formulation includes two major advances for simulations of the Sun. First, we derive data-driven BCs that optimally match the state of the plasma inferred from a time series of observations of a boundary (e.g., the solar photosphere). Second, our method directly handles random noise and systematic bias in the observations, and finds a solution for the boundary evolution that is strictly consistent with MHD and maximally consistent with the observations. We validate the method against a Ground Truth (GT) simulation of an expanding spheromak. The data-driven simulation can reproduce the GT simulation above the photosphere with high fidelity when driven at high cadence. Errors progressively increase for lower driving cadence until a threshold cadence is reached and the driven simulation can no longer accurately reproduce the GT simulation. However, our characteristic formulation of the BCs still requires adherence of the boundary evolution to the MHD equations even when the driven solution departs from the true solution in the driving layer. That increasing departure clearly indicates when additional information at the boundary is needed to fully specify the correct evolution of the system. Europium intermetallic compounds show a variety of different ground states and anomalous physical properties due to the interactions between the localized 4f electrons and the delocalized electronic states. Europium is also the most reactive of the rare earth metals which might be the reason why very few works are concerned with the properties of Eu-based thin films. Here we address the low-temperature magnetic properties of ferromagnetic EuPd$_2$ thin films prepared by molecular beam epitaxy. The epitaxial (111)-oriented thin films grow on MgO (100) with eight different domain orientations. We analyze the low-temperature magnetic hysteresis behavior by means of micromagnetic simulations taking the multi-domain morphology explicitly into account and quantify the magnetic crystal anisotropy contribution. By ab initio calculations we trace back the microscopic origin of the magnetic anisotropy to thin film-induced biaxial strain.

Magnetic helicity, $H$, measures magnetic linkages in a volume. The early theoretical development of helicity focused on magnetically closed systems in $\mathcal{V}$ bounded by $\mathcal{S}$. For magnetically closed systems, $\mathcal{V}\in\mathbb{R}^3=\mathcal{V}+\mathcal{V}^*$, no magnetic flux threads the boundary, $\hat{\boldsymbol{n}}\cdot\boldsymbol{B}|_\mathcal{S}=0$. Berger and Field (1984) and Finn and Antonsen (1985) extended the definition of helicity to relative helicity, $\mathcal{H}$, for magnetically open systems where magnetic flux may thread the boundary. Berger (1999,2003) expressed this relative helicity as two gauge invariant terms that describe the self helicity of magnetic field that closes inside $\mathcal{V}$ and the mutual helicity between the magnetic field that threads the boundary $\mathcal{S}$ and the magnetic field that closes inside $\mathcal{V}$. The total magnetic field that permeates $\mathcal{V}$ entangles magnetic fields that are produced by current sources $\boldsymbol{J}$ in $\mathcal{V}$ with magnetic fields that are produced by current sources $\boldsymbol{J}^*$ in $\mathcal{V}^*$. Building on this fact, we extend Berger's expressions for relative magnetic helicity to eight gauge invariant quantities that simultaneously characterize both of these self and mutual helicities and attribute their origins to currents $\boldsymbol{J}$ in $\mathcal{V}$ and/or $\boldsymbol{J}^*$ in $\mathcal{V}^*$, thereby disentangling the domain of origin for these entangled linkages. We arrange these eight terms into novel expressions for internal and external helicity (self) and internal-external helicity (mutual) based on their domain of origin. The implications of these linkages for interpreting magnetic energy is discussed and new boundary observables are proposed for tracking the evolution of the field that threads the boundary., Comment: 27 pages, 2 figures

Ferroelectricity, a spontaneous and reversible electric polarization, is found in certain classes of van der Waals (vdW) material heterostructures. The discovery of ferroelectricity in twisted vdW layers provides new opportunities to engineer spatially dependent electric and optical properties associated with the configuration of moir\'e superlattice domains and the network of domain walls. Here, we employ near-field infrared nano-imaging and nano-photocurrent measurements to study ferroelectricity in minimally twisted WSe2. The ferroelectric domains are visualized through the imaging of the plasmonic response in a graphene monolayer adjacent to the moir\'e WSe2 bilayers. Specifically, we find that the ferroelectric polarization in moir\'e domains is imprinted on the plasmonic response of the graphene. Complementary nano-photocurrent measurements demonstrate that the optoelectronic properties of graphene are also modulated by the proximal ferroelectric domains. Our approach represents an alternative strategy for studying moir\'e ferroelectricity at native length scales and opens promising prospects for (opto)electronic devices., Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures

Delta ($\delta$) sunspots sometimes host fast photospheric flows along the central magnetic polarity inversion line (PIL). Here we study the strong Doppler shift signature in the central penumbral light bridge of solar active region NOAA 12673. Observations from the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) indicate highly sheared, strong magnetic fields. Large Doppler shifts up to 3.2 km s$^{-1}$ appeared during the formation of the light bridge and persisted for about 16 hours. A new velocity estimator, called DAVE4VMwDV, reveals fast converging and shearing motion along the PIL from HMI vector magnetograms, and recovers the observed Doppler signal much better than an old version of the algorithm. The inferred velocity vectors are largely (anti-)parallel to the inclined magnetic fields, suggesting that the observed Doppler shift contains significant contribution from the projected, field-aligned flows. High-resolution observations from the Hinode/Spectro-Polarimeter (SP) further exhibit a clear correlation between the Doppler velocity and the cosine of the magnetic inclination, which is in agreement with HMI results and consistent with a field-aligned flow of about 9.6 km s$^{-1}$. The complex Stokes profiles suggest significant gradients of physical variables along the line of sight. Photon avalanching nanoparticles (ANPs) exhibit extremely nonlinear upconverted emission valuable for sub-diffraction imaging, nanoscale sensing, and optical computing. Avalanching has been demonstrated with Tm3+, Nd3+ or Pr3+-doped nanocrystals, but their emission is limited to 600 and 800 nm, restricting applications. Here, we utilize Gd3+-assisted energy migration to tune the emission wavelengths of Tm3+-sensitized ANPs and generate highly nonlinear emission of Eu3+, Tb3+, Ho3+, and Er3+ ions. The upconversion intensities of these spectrally discrete ANPs scale with the nonlinearity factor s = 10-17 under 1064 nm excitation at power densities as low as 6 kW/cm2. This strategy for imprinting avalanche behavior on remote emitters can be extended to fluorophores adjacent to ANPs, as we demonstrate with CdS/CdSe/CdS core/shell/shell quantum dots. ANPs with rationally designed energy transfer networks provide the means to transform conventional linear emitters into a highly nonlinear ones, expanding the use of photon avalanching in biological, chemical, and photonic applications., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

Intermetallic binary compounds of europium reveal a variety of interesting phenomena due to the interconnection between two different magnetic and 4f electronic (valence) states, which are particularly close in energy. The valence states or magnetic properties are thus particularly sensitive to strain-tuning in these materials. Consequently, we grew epitaxial EuPd$_2$ (magnetic Eu$^{2+}$) and EuPd$_3$ (nonmagnetic Eu$^{3+}$) thin films on MgO(001) substrates using molecular beam epitaxy. Ambient X-ray diffraction confirms an epitaxial relationship of cubic Laves-type (C15) EuPd$_2$ with an (111)-out-of-plane orientation, whereby eight distinct in-plane crystallographic domains develop. For simple cubic EuPd$_3$ two different out-of-plane orientations can be obtained by changing the substrate annealing temperature under ultra-high vacuum conditions from 600 {\deg}C to 1000 {\deg}C for one hour. A small resistance minimum evolves for EuPd$_3$ thin films grown with low temperature substrate annealing, which was previously found even in single crystals of EuPd$_3$ and might be attributed to a Kondo or weak localization effect. Absence of influence of an applied magnetic fields and magnetotransport measurements suggest a nonmagnetic ground state for EuPd$_3$ thin films, i. e., a purely trivalent Eu valence, as found in EuPd$_3$ single crystals. For EuPd$_2$ magnetic ordering below ~72 K is observed, quite similar to single crystal behavior. Field dependent measurements of the magnetoresistance and the Hall effect show hysteresis effects below ~0.4 T and an anomalous Hall effect below ~70 K, which saturates around 1.4 T, thus proving a ferromagnetic ground state of the divalent Eu.

We present a hybrid waveguide-fiber optical parametric oscillator (OPO) exploiting degenerate four-wave mixing in tantalum pentoxide. The OPO, pumped with ultrashort pulses at 1.55 $\mu$m wavelength, generated tunable idler pulses with up to 4.1 pJ energy tunable between 1.63 $\mu$m and 1.68 $\mu$m center wavelength. A semiclassical second-order differential equation for the inhomogeneous local gap $\Delta(r)$ is derived from a strict second-order $\hbar$ expansion of the anomalous pairing tensor and compared with a similar equation given by Simonucci et al. The second-order normal density matrix is given as well. Several extra gradient terms are revealed. Second-order expressions at finite temperature are given for the first time. The corresponding Ginzburg-Landau equation is presented and it is shown that, compared to the equation of Baranov and Petrov, an extra second-order gradient term is present. Localized states in two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have been the subject of intense study, driven by potential applications in quantum information science. Despite the rapidly growing knowledge surrounding these emitters, their microscopic nature is still not fully understood, limiting their production and application. Motivated by this challenge, and by recent theoretical and experimental evidence showing that nanowrinkles generate localized room-temperature emitters, we demonstrate a method to intentionally induce wrinkles with collections of stressors, showing that long-range wrinkle direction and position are controllable with patterned array design. Nano-photoluminescence (nano-PL) imaging combined with detailed strain modeling based on measured wrinkle topography establishes a correlation between wrinkle properties, particularly shear strain, and localized exciton emission. Beyond the array-induced super-wrinkles, nano-PL spatial maps further reveal that the strain environment around individual stressors is heterogeneous due to the presence of fine wrinkles that are less deterministic. Detailed nanoscale hyperspectral images uncover a wide range of low-energy emission peaks originating from these fine wrinkles, and show that the states can be tightly confined to regions < 10 nm, even in ambient conditions. Postmortem MRI allows brain anatomy to be examined at high resolution and to link pathology measures with morphometric measurements. However, automated segmentation methods for brain mapping in postmortem MRI are not well developed, primarily due to limited availability of labeled datasets, and heterogeneity in scanner hardware and acquisition protocols. In this work, we present a high resolution of 135 postmortem human brain tissue specimens imaged at 0.3 mm$^{3}$ isotropic using a T2w sequence on a 7T whole-body MRI scanner. We developed a deep learning pipeline to segment the cortical mantle by benchmarking the performance of nine deep neural architectures, followed by post-hoc topological correction. We then segment four subcortical structures (caudate, putamen, globus pallidus, and thalamus), white matter hyperintensities, and the normal appearing white matter. We show generalizing capabilities across whole brain hemispheres in different specimens, and also on unseen images acquired at 0.28 mm^3 and 0.16 mm^3 isotropic T2*w FLASH sequence at 7T. We then compute localized cortical thickness and volumetric measurements across key regions, and link them with semi-quantitative neuropathological ratings. When developing tools for automated cortical segmentation, the ability to produce topologically correct segmentations is important in order to compute geometrically valid morphometry measures. In practice, accurate cortical segmentation is challenged by image artifacts and the highly convoluted anatomy of the cortex itself. To address this, we propose a novel deep learning-based cortical segmentation method in which prior knowledge about the geometry of the cortex is incorporated into the network during the training process. We design a loss function which uses the theory of Laplace's equation applied to the cortex to locally penalize unresolved boundaries between tightly folded sulci. Using an ex vivo MRI dataset of human medial temporal lobe specimens, we demonstrate that our approach outperforms baseline segmentation networks, both quantitatively and qualitatively., Comment: Accepted at the 28th biennial international conference on Information Processing in Medical Imaging (IPMI 2023)

Humans sometimes have an insight that leads to a sudden and drastic performance improvement on the task they are working on. Sudden strategy adaptations are often linked to insights, considered to be a unique aspect of human cognition tied to complex processes such as creativity or meta-cognitive reasoning. Here, we take a learning perspective and ask whether insight-like behaviour can occur in simple artificial neural networks, even when the models only learn to form input-output associations through gradual gradient descent. We compared learning dynamics in humans and regularised neural networks in a perceptual decision task that included a hidden regularity to solve the task more efficiently. Our results show that only some humans discover this regularity, whose behaviour was marked by a sudden and abrupt strategy switch that reflects an aha-moment. Notably, we find that simple neural networks with a gradual learning rule and a constant learning rate closely mimicked behavioural characteristics of human insight-like switches, exhibiting delay of insight, suddenness and selective occurrence in only some networks. Analyses of network architectures and learning dynamics revealed that insight-like behaviour crucially depended on a regularised gating mechanism and noise added to gradient updates, which allowed the networks to accumulate "silent knowledge" that is initially suppressed by regularised (attentional) gating. This suggests that insight-like behaviour can arise naturally from gradual learning in simple neural networks, where it reflects the combined influences of noise, gating and regularisation., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

Excitons, bound electron-hole pairs, in Two-Dimensional Hybrid Organic Inorganic Perovskites (2D HOIPs) are capable of forming hybrid light-matter states known as exciton-polaritons (E-Ps) when the excitonic medium is confined in an optical cavity. In the case of 2D HOIPs, they can self-hybridize into E-Ps at specific thicknesses of the HOIP crystals that form a resonant optical cavity with the excitons. However, the fundamental properties of these self-hybridized E-Ps in 2D HOIPs, including their role in ultrafast energy and/or charge transfer at interfaces, remain unclear. Here, we demonstrate that > 0.5 um thick 2D HOIP crystals on Au substrates are capable of supporting multiple-orders of self-hybridized E-P modes. These E-Ps have high Q factors (> 100) and modulate the optical dispersion for the crystal to enhance sub-gap absorption and emission. Through varying excitation energy and ultrafast measurements, we also confirm energy transfer from higher energy upper E-Ps to lower energy, lower E-Ps. Finally, we also demonstrate that E-Ps are capable of charge transport and transfer at interfaces. Near-field imaging has emerged as a reliable probe of the dielectric function of van der Waals crystals. In principle, analyzing the propagation patterns of subwavelength waveguide modes (WMs) allows for extraction of the full dielectric tensor. Yet previous studies have mostly been restricted to high-symmetry materials or narrowband probing. Here, we resolve in-plane anisotropic WMs in thin rhenium disulfide (ReS2) crystals across a wide range of near-infrared frequencies. By tracing the evolution of these modes as a function of crystallographic direction, polarization of the electric field and sample thickness, we have determined the anisotropic dielectric tensor including the elusive out-of-plane response. The excitonic absorption at ~1.5 eV manifests itself as a clear backbending feature in the WM dispersion and a reduction of the quality factors as fully supported by numerical calculations. The complexity of applications addressed with photonic integrated circuits is steadily rising and poses increasingly challenging demands on individual component functionality, performance and footprint. Inverse design methods have recently shown great promise to address these demands using fully automated design procedures that enable access to non-intuitive device layouts beyond conventional nanophotonic design concepts. Here we present a dynamic binarization method for the objective-first algorithm that lies at the core of the currently most successful inverse design algorithms. Our results demonstrate significant performance advantages over previous implementations of objective first algorithms, which we show for a fundamental TE00 to TE20 waveguide mode converter both in simulation and in experiments with fabricated devices., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

We investigate the cross-calibration of the Hinode/SOT-SP and SDO/HMI instrument meta-data, specifically the correspondence of the scaling and pointing information. Accurate calibration of these datasets gives the correspondence needed by inter-instrument studies and learning-based magnetogram systems, and is required for physically-meaningful photospheric magnetic field vectors. We approach the problem by robustly fitting geometric models on correspondences between images from each instrument's pipeline. This technique is common in computer vision, but several critical details are required when using scanning slit spectrograph data like Hinode/SOT-SP. We apply this technique to data spanning a decade of the Hinode mission. Our results suggest corrections to the published Level 2 Hinode/SOT-SP data. First, an analysis on approximately 2,700 scans suggests that the reported pixel size in Hinode/SOT-SP Level 2 data is incorrect by around 1%. Second, analysis of over 12,000 scans show that the pointing information is often incorrect by dozens of arcseconds with a strong bias. Regression of these corrections indicates that thermal effects have caused secular and cyclic drift in Hinode/SOT-SP pointing data over its mission. We offer two solutions. First, direct co-alignment with SDO/HMI data via our procedure can improve alignments for many Hinode/SOT-SP scans. Second, since the pointing errors are predictable, simple post-hoc corrections can substantially improve the pointing. We conclude by illustrating the impact of this updated calibration on derived physical data products needed for research and interpretation. Moir\'e superlattices in twisted two-dimensional materials have generated tremendous excitement as a platform for achieving quantum properties on demand. However, the moir\'e pattern is highly sensitive to the interlayer atomic registry, and current assembly techniques suffer from imprecise control of the average twist angle, spatial inhomogeneity in the local twist angle, and distortions due to random strain. Here, we demonstrate a new way to manipulate the moir\'e patterns in hetero- and homo-bilayers through in-plane bending of monolayer ribbons, using the tip of an atomic force microscope. This technique achieves continuous variation of twist angles with improved twist-angle homogeneity and reduced random strain, resulting in moir\'e patterns with highly tunable wavelength and ultra-low disorder. Our results pave the way for detailed studies of ultra-low disorder moir\'e systems and the realization of precise strain-engineered devices.

Materials whose luminescence can be switched by optical stimulation drive technologies ranging from superresolution imaging1-4, nanophotonics5, and optical data storage6-8, to targeted pharmacology, optogenetics, and chemical reactivity9. These photoswitchable probes, including organic fluorophores and proteins, are prone to photodegradation, and often require phototoxic doses of ultraviolet (UV) or visible light. Colloidal inorganic nanoparticles have significant stability advantages over existing photoswitchable materials, but the ability to switch emission bidirectionally, particularly with NIR light, has not been reported with nanoparticles. Here, we present 2-way, near-infrared (NIR) photoswitching of avalanching nanoparticles (ANPs), showing full optical control of upconverted emission using phototriggers in the NIR-I and NIR-II spectral regions useful for subsurface imaging. Employing single-step photodarkening10-13 and photobrightening12,14-18, we demonstrate indefinite photoswitching of individual nanoparticles (>1000 cycles over 7 h) in ambient or aqueous conditions without measurable photodegradation. Critical steps of the photoswitching mechanism are elucidated by modeling and by measuring the photon avalanche properties of single ANPs in both bright and dark states. Unlimited, reversible photoswitching of ANPs enables indefinitely rewritable 2D and 3D multi-level optical patterning of ANPs, as well as optical nanoscopy with sub-{\AA} localization superresolution that allows us to distinguish individual ANPs within tightly packed clusters., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

Bulk EuPd$_2$Si$_2$ show a temperature-driven valence transisition of europium from $\sim$+2 above 200 K to $\sim$+3 below 100 K, which is correlated with a shrinking by approximatly 2 % of the crystal lattice along the two a-axes. Due to this interconnection between lattice and electronic degrees of freedom the influence of strain in epitaxial thin films is particularly interesting. Ambient X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirms an epitaxial relationship of tetragonal EuPd$_2$Si$_2$ on MgO(001) with an out-of plane c-axis orientation for the thin film, whereby the a-axes of both lattices align. XRD at low temperatures reveals a strong coupling of the thin film lattice to the substrate, showing no abrupt compression over the temperature range from 300 to 10 K. Hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy at 300 and 20 K reveals a temperature-independent valence of +2.0 for Eu. The evolving biaxial tensile strain upon cooling is suggested to suppress the valence transition. Instead low temperature transport measurements of the resistivity and the Hall effect in a magnetic field up to 5 T point to a film thickness independent phase transition at 16-20 K, indicating magnetic ordering.

The optical properties of transition metal dichalcogenides have previously been modified at the nanoscale by using mechanical and electrical nanostructuring. However, a clear experimental picture relating the local electronic structure with emission properties in such structures has so far been lacking. Here, we use a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and near-field photoluminescence (nano-PL) to probe the electronic and optical properties of single nano-bubbles in bilayer heterostructures of WSe2 on MoSe2. We show from tunneling spectroscopy that there are electronic states deeply localized in the gap at the edge of such bubbles, which are independent of the presence of chemical defects in the layers. We also show a significant change in the local bandgap on the bubble, with a continuous evolution to the edge of the bubble over a length scale of ~20 nm. Nano-PL measurements observe a continuous redshift of the interlayer exciton on entering the bubble, in agreement with the band to band transitions measured by STM. We use self-consistent Schr\"odinger-Poisson (SP) simulations to capture the essence of the experimental results and find that strong doping in the bubble region is a key ingredient to achieving the observed localized states, together with mechanical strain.

Strong light-matter interactions in localized nano-emitters when placed near metallic mirrors have been widely reported via spectroscopic studies in the optical far-field. Here, we report a near-field nano-spectroscopic study of the localized nanoscale emitters on a flat Au substrate. We observe strong-coupling of the excitonic dipoles in quasi 2-dimensional CdSe/CdxZnS1-xS nanoplatelets with gap mode plasmons formed between the Au tip and substrate. We also observe directional propagation on the Au substrate of surface plasmon polaritons launched from the excitons of the nanoplatelets as wave-like fringe patterns in the near-field photoluminescence maps. These fringe patterns were confirmed via extensive electromagnetic wave simulations to be standing-waves formed between the tip and the emitter on the substrate plane. We further report that both light confinement and the in-plane emission can be engineered by tuning the surrounding dielectric environment of the nanoplatelets. Superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors are an enabling technology for modern quantum information science and are gaining attractiveness for the most demanding photon counting tasks in other fields. Embedding such detectors in photonic integrated circuits enables additional counting capabilities through nanophotonic functionalization. Here we show how a scalable number of waveguide-integrated superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors can be interfaced with independent fiber optic channels on the same chip. Our plug-and-play detector package is hosted inside a compact and portable closed-cycle cryostat providing cryogenic signal amplification for up to 64 channels. We demonstrate state-of-the-art photon counting performance with up to 60 % system detection efficiency and down to 26.0 ps timing accuracy for individually addressable detectors. The field of quantum information processing offers secure communication protected by the laws of quantum mechanics and is on the verge of finding wider application for information transfer of sensitive data. To overcome the obstacle of inadequate cost-efficiency, extensive research is being done on the many components required for high data throughput using quantum key distribution (QKD). Aiming for an application-oriented solution, we report on the realization of a multichannel QKD system for plug-and-play high-bandwidth secure communication at telecom wavelength. For this purpose, a rack-sized multichannel superconducting nanowire single photon detector (SNSPD) system, as well as a highly parallelized time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) unit have been developed and linked to an FPGA-controlled QKD evaluation setup allowing for continuous operation and achieving high secret key rates using a coherent-one-way protocol., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

Reinforcement learning is a promising method for robotic grasping as it can learn effective reaching and grasping policies in difficult scenarios. However, achieving human-like manipulation capabilities with sophisticated robotic hands is challenging because of the problem's high dimensionality. Although remedies such as reward shaping or expert demonstrations can be employed to overcome this issue, they often lead to oversimplified and biased policies. We present Dext-Gen, a reinforcement learning framework for Dexterous Grasping in sparse reward ENvironments that is applicable to a variety of grippers and learns unbiased and intricate policies. Full orientation control of the gripper and object is achieved through smooth orientation representation. Our approach has reasonable training durations and provides the option to include desired prior knowledge. The effectiveness and adaptability of the framework to different scenarios is demonstrated in simulated experiments.

Plasmon polaritons in van der Waals (vdW) materials hold promise for next-generation photonics. The ability to deterministically imprint spatial patterns of high carrier density in cavities and circuitry with nanoscale features underlies future progress in nonlinear nanophotonics and strong light-matter interactions. Here, we demonstrate a general strategy to atomically imprint low-loss graphene plasmonic structures using oxidation-activated charge transfer (OCT). We cover graphene with a monolayer of WSe$_2$, which is subsequently oxidized into high work-function WOx to activate charge transfer. Nano-infrared imaging reveals low-loss plasmon polaritons at the WOx/graphene interface. We insert WSe$_2$ spacers to precisely control the OCT-induced carrier density and achieve a near-intrinsic quality factor of plasmons. Finally, we imprint canonical plasmonic cavities exhibiting laterally abrupt doping profiles with single-digit nanoscale precision via programmable OCT. Specifically, we demonstrate technologically appealing but elusive plasmonic whispering-gallery resonators based on free-standing graphene encapsulated in WOx. Metals are canonical plasmonic media at infrared and optical wavelengths, allowing one to guide and manipulate light at the nano-scale. A special form of optical waveguiding is afforded by highly anisotropic crystals revealing the opposite signs of the dielectric functions along orthogonal directions. These media are classified as hyperbolic and include crystalline insulators, semiconductors and artificial metamaterials. Layered anisotropic metals are also anticipated to support hyperbolic waveguiding. Yet this behavior remains elusive, primarily because interband losses arrest the propagation of infrared modes. Here, we report on the observation of propagating hyperbolic waves in a prototypical layered nodal-line semimetal ZrSiSe. The observed waveguiding originates from polaritonic hybridization between near-infrared light and nodal-line plasmons. Unique nodal electronic structures simultaneously suppress interband loss and boost the plasmonic response, ultimately enabling the propagation of infrared modes through the bulk of the crystal.

Nonlinear frequency conversion provides essential tools for light generation, photon entanglement, and manipulation. Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) possess huge nonlinear susceptibilities and 3R-stacked TMD crystals further combine broken inversion symmetry and aligned layering, representing ideal candidates to boost the nonlinear optical gain with minimal footprint. Here, we report on the efficient frequency conversion of 3R-MoS2, revealing the evolution of its exceptional second-order nonlinear processes along the ordinary (in-plane) and extraordinary (out-of-plane) directions. By measuring second harmonic generation (SHG) of 3R-MoS2 with various thickness - from monolayer (~0.65 nm) to bulk (~1 {\mu}m) - we present the first measurement of the in-plane SHG coherence length (~530 nm) at 1520 nm and achieve record nonlinear optical enhancement from a van der Waals material, >10^4 stronger than a monolayer. It is found that 3R-MoS2 slabs exhibit similar conversion efficiencies of lithium niobate, but within propagation lengths >100-fold shorter at telecom wavelengths. Furthermore, along the extraordinary axis, we achieve broadly tunable SHG from 3R-MoS2 in a waveguide geometry, revealing the coherence length in such structure for the first time. We characterize the full refractive index spectrum and quantify both birefringence components in anisotropic 3R-MoS2 crystals with near-field nano-imaging. Empowered with these data we assess the intrinsic limits of the conversion efficiency and nonlinear optical processes in 3R-MoS2 attainable in waveguide geometries. Our analysis highlights the potential of 3R-stacked TMDs for integrated photonics, providing critical parameters for designing highly efficient on-chip nonlinear optical devices including periodically poled structures, resonators, compact optical parametric oscillators and amplifiers, and optical quantum circuits.

Improving the stability of electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) through materials design has received less attention than improving their catalytic activity. We explored the effect of Mn addition to a cobalt oxide for stabilizing the catalyst by comparing Na-containing CoOx and (Co0.7Mn0.3)Ox films electrodeposited in alkaline solution. The obtained disordered films were classified as layered oxides using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The CoOx films showed a constant decrease in the catalytic activity during cycling, confirmed by oxygen detection, while that of (Co0.7Mn0.3)Ox slightly increased as measured by electrochemical metrics. These trends were rationalized based on XAS analysis of the metal oxidation states, which were Co2.8+ and Mn3.7+ near the surface after cycling. Thus, adding Mn to CoOx successfully stabilized the catalyst material and its activity during OER cycling. Gaussian process regression is increasingly applied for learning unknown dynamical systems. In particular, the implicit quantification of the uncertainty of the learned model makes it a promising approach for safety-critical applications. When using Gaussian process regression to learn unknown systems, a commonly considered approach consists of learning the residual dynamics after applying some generic discretization technique, which might however disregard properties of the underlying physical system. Variational integrators are a less common yet promising approach to discretization, as they retain physical properties of the underlying system, such as energy conservation and satisfaction of explicit kinematic constraints. In this work, we present a novel structure-preserving learning-based modelling approach that combines a variational integrator for the nominal dynamics of a mechanical system and learning residual dynamics with Gaussian process regression. We extend our approach to systems with known kinematic constraints and provide formal bounds on the prediction uncertainty. The simulative evaluation of the proposed method shows desirable energy conservation properties in accordance with general theoretical results and demonstrates exact constraint satisfaction for constrained dynamical systems.

This article reports on studies of chlorine-substituted MAPbI3 using combined temperature-dependent XRD synchrotron and Pb-L3 edge EXAFS to analyze the anharmonicity of the lead halide bond. The EXAFS parameters were described in the orthorhombic phase by an Einstein or T2 type behavior, which was then compared with the experimental EXAFS parameters of the tetragonal/cubic phase. In the orthorhombic phase, it was observed that the asymmetry of the pair distribution function (cumulant C3) in MAPbCl3 is much lower than in MAPbI3. Compared with the behavior in the orthorhombic phase, the anharmonicity changed after the phase transition to the room temperature phase, with MAPbCl3 showing an increased anharmonicity and MAPbI3 a decrease. The differences between MAPbI3 and 2% chlorine substitution were small, both in the orthorhombic and tetragonal phases. By determining the structural parameters required to convert the effective force constants k0 and k3 resulting from the EXAFS analysis into the Morse potential parameters {\alpha} and D, we could establish that our results agree with other experimental findings. Moreover, by using XRD we found that the [PbX6] octahedra shrink slightly in the tetragonal phase of MAPbI3 and MAPbI2.94Cl0.06, towards increasing temperatures. This behavior in the tetragonal phase is related to the dominant negative tension effects observed by EXAFS.

Second harmonic generation (SHG) is a nonlinear optical response arising exclusively from broken inversion symmetry in the electric-dipole limit. Recently, SHG has attracted widespread interest as a versatile and noninvasive tool for characterization of crystal symmetry and emerging ferroic or topological orders in quantum materials. However, conventional far-field optics is unable to probe local symmetry at the deep subwavelength scale. Here, we demonstrate near-field SHG imaging of 2D semiconductors and heterostructures with the spatial resolution down to 20 nm using a scattering-type nano-optical apparatus. We show that near-field SHG efficiency is greatly enhanced by excitons in atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides. Furthermore, by correlating nonlinear and linear scattering-type nano-imaging, we resolve nanoscale variations of interlayer stacking order in bilayer WSe2, and reveal the stacking-tuned excitonic light-matter-interactions. Our work demonstrates nonlinear optical interrogation of crystal symmetry and structure-property relationships at the nanometer length scales relevant to emerging properties in quantum materials.

Recent advances in emerging atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors with strong light-matter interactions and tunable optical properties provide novel approaches for realizing new material functionalities. Coupling two-dimensional semiconductors with all-dielectric resonant nanostructures represents an especially attractive opportunity for manipulating optical properties in both the near-field and far-field regimes. Here, by integrating single-layer WSe2 and titanium oxide (TiO2) dielectric metasurfaces with toroidal resonances, we realized robust exciton emission enhancement over one order of magnitude at both room and low temperatures. Furthermore, we could control exciton dynamics and annihilation by using temperature to tailor the spectral overlap of excitonic and toroidal resonances, allowing us to selectively enhance the Purcell effect. Our results provide rich physical insight into the strong light-matter interactions in single-layer TMDs coupled with toroidal dielectric metasurfaces, with important implications for optoelectronics and photonics applications.

Ex vivo MRI of the brain provides remarkable advantages over in vivo MRI for visualizing and characterizing detailed neuroanatomy. However, automated cortical segmentation methods in ex vivo MRI are not well developed, primarily due to limited availability of labeled datasets, and heterogeneity in scanner hardware and acquisition protocols. In this work, we present a high resolution 7 Tesla dataset of 32 ex vivo human brain specimens. We benchmark the cortical mantle segmentation performance of nine neural network architectures, trained and evaluated using manually-segmented 3D patches sampled from specific cortical regions, and show excellent generalizing capabilities across whole brain hemispheres in different specimens, and also on unseen images acquired at different magnetic field strength and imaging sequences. Finally, we provide cortical thickness measurements across key regions in 3D ex vivo human brain images. Both NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and the JAXA/NASA Hinode mission include spectropolarimetric instruments designed to measure the photospheric magnetic field. SDO's Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) emphasizes full-disk high-cadence and good spatial resolution data acquisition while Hinode's Solar Optical Telescope Spectro-Polarimeter (SOT-SP) focuses on high spatial resolution and spectral sampling at the cost of a limited field of view and slower temporal cadence. This work introduces a deep-learning system named SynthIA (Synthetic Inversion Approximation), that can enhance both missions by capturing the best of each instrument's characteristics. We use SynthIA to produce a new magnetogram data product, SynodeP (Synthetic Hinode Pipeline), that mimics magnetograms from the higher spectral resolution Hinode/SOT-SP pipeline, but is derived from full-disk, high-cadence, and lower spectral-resolution SDO/HMI Stokes observations. Results on held-out data show that SynodeP has good agreement with the Hinode/SOT-SP pipeline inversions, including magnetic fill fraction, which is not provided by the current SDO/HMI pipeline. SynodeP further shows a reduction in the magnitude of the 24-hour oscillations present in the SDO/HMI data. To demonstrate SynthIA's generality, we show the use of SDO/AIA data and subsets of the HMI data as inputs, which enables trade-offs between fidelity to the Hinode/SOT-SP inversions, number of observations used, and temporal artifacts. We discuss possible generalizations of SynthIA and its implications for space weather modeling.
