Stereochemically active lone-pair (SCALP) cations are attractive units for realizing optical anisotropy. Antimony (III) chloride perovskites with SCALP have remained largely unknown till date. We synthesized vacancy ordered Cs3Sb2Cl9 perovskite single crystals with SbCl6 octahedral linkage containing SCALP. Remarkably, Cs3Sb2Cl9 single crystals exhibit an exceptional birefringence of 0.12 +(-) 0.01 at 550 nm, which is the largest among pristine all-inorganic halide perovskites. The SCALP brings a large local structural distortion of the SbCl6 octahedra promoting birefringence optical responses in Cs3Sb2Cl9 single crystals. Theoretical calculations reveal that the considerable hybridization of Sb 5s with Sb 5p and Cl 3p states largely contribute to the SCALP. Furthermore, the change in the Sb-Cl-Sb bond angle creates distortion in the SbCl6 octahedral arrangement in the apical and equatorial directions within the crystal structure incorporating the required anisotropy for the birefringence. This work explores pristine inorganic halide perovskite single crystals as a potential birefringent material with prospects in integrated optical devices.

We report the synthesis, characterization, low-temperature magnetic, and thermodynamic measurements of the novel milli-Kelvin adiabatic demagnetization refrigeration (mK-ADR) candidate material NaYbGeO$_4$ which exhibits a distorted square lattice arrangement of YbO$_{6}$ magnetic units. Magnetization and specific heat indicate weakly interacting effective spin-1/2 moments below 10~K, with a Curie-Weiss temperature of only 15~mK, that can be polarized by magnetic fields of order 1~T. For the ADR performance test, we start the demagnetization from 5~T at a temperature of $\sim 2$~K and reach a minimum temperature of 150~mK at zero field. The warming curve indicates a sharp magnetic transition in the heat capacity at 210~mK, implying only weak magnetic frustration. The entropy density of $S_{\rm GS}\simeq 101$ mJ K$ ^{-1}$cm$^{-3}$ and hold time below 2~K of 220~min are competitive while the minimal temperature is higher compared to frustrated Ytterbium-oxide ADR materials studied under similar conditions., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

The occurrence of a noncollinear magnetic structure at a Mn monolayer grown epitaxially on Fe(100) is predicted theoretically, using spinor density-functional theory, and observed experimentally, using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and linear dichroism (XMLD) spectroscopies. The combined use of XMCD and XMLD at the Mn-absorption edge allows us to assess the existence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic order at the interface, and also to determine the moment orientations with element specificity. The experimental results thus obtained are in excellent agreement with the magnetic structure determined theoretically.

Motivated by experimental suggestions of anionic redox processes helping to design higher energy lithium ion-battery cathode materials, we investigate this effect using first-principles electronic structure calculations for Li-rich layered sulfides. We identify the determination of the energetic contribution of intra-atomic Hund's exchange coupling as a major obstacle to a reliable theoretical description. We overcome this challenge by developing a particularly efficient flavor of charge-self-consistent combined density functional + dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) calculations. Our scheme allows us to describe the spin ground states of the transition metal d shell, the electronic structure of the materials, and its energetics. As a result of the high-spin to low-spin transition the average intercalation voltage shows intriguing non-monotonic behavior. We rationalize these findings by an analysis of the fluctuations of spin and charge degrees of freedom. Our work demonstrates the relevance of most recent insights into correlated electron materials for the physics of functional materials such as Li-ion battery compounds.

Attaining milli-Kelvin temperatures is often a prerequisite for the study of novel quantum phenomena and the operation of quantum devices. Adiabatic demagnetization refrigeration (ADR) is an effective, easy and sustainable alternative to evaporation or dilution cooling with the rare and super-expensive $^3$He. Paramagnetic salts, traditionally used for mK-ADR, suffer from chemical instability related to water of crystallization. We report synthesis, characterization as well as low-temperature magnetization and specific heat measurements of two new UHV compatible candidate materials NaYbP$_2$O$_7$ and KYbP$_2$O$_7$. Utilizing the PPMS at 2 K, the ADR of sintered pellets with Ag powder admixture starting at 5 T yields base temperatures (warm-up times) of 45 mK (55 min) and 37 mK (35 min) for NaYbP$_2$O$_7$ and KYbP$_2$O$_7$, respectively, slightly advantageous to KBaYb(BO$_3$)$_2$ (45 mK and 40 min) studied under similar conditions., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

In this article we employ density functional theory in the generalized gradient approximation to investigate the structural and electronic properties of the solid solution alloy $\text{Zn}\text{Se}_x\text{S}_{1-x}$ in the wurtzite structure. We analyzed the character of the bond lengths and angles at the atomic scale, using a supercell approach that does not impose any constraint on the crystal potential. We show that the bond lengths of pristine ZnS and ZnSe compounds are almost preserved between nearest neighbors, which is different from what would be anticipated if Vegard's law were valid at the atomic level. We also show that bond lengths start behaving in accordance to Vegard's law from the third shell of nearest neighbors onward, which in turn determines the average lattice parameters of the alloys determined by diffraction experiments. Fundamental building blocks around the anions are identified and are shown to be non-rigid but still volume preserving. Finally, the geometrical analysis is connected to the trend exhibited by the electronic structure, and in particular by the band gap. The latter is found to exhibit a small deviation from the linearity with respect to the Se concentration, in accordance to available experimental data. By assuming a quadratic dependence, we can extract a bowing parameter and analyze various contributions to it with various calculations under selected constraints. The structural deformation in response to the doping process is shown to be the driving force behind the deviation from linearity. The difference in stiffness between ZnS and ZnSe is showed to play a key role in the asymmetric behavior of the bowing parameter observed in the S-rich and Se-rich regions.

The optoelectronic properties and ultimately photovoltaic performance of hybrid lead halide perovskites, is inherently related to the dynamics of the organic cations. Here we report on the dynamics of the formamidinium (FA) cation in FAPbX3 perovskites for chloride and bromide varieties, as studied by neutron spectroscopy. Elastic fixed window scan measurements showed the onset of reorientational motion of FA cations in FAPbCl3 to occur at a considerably higher temperature compared to that in FAPbBr3. In addition, we observed two distinct dynamical transitions only in the chloride system, suggesting a significant variation in the reorientational motions of the FA cation with temperature. Quasielastic neutron scattering data analysis of FAPbCl3 showed that in the low temperature orthorhombic phase, FA cations undergo 2-fold jump reorientations about the C-H axis which evolve into an isotropic rotation in the intermediate tetragonal and high temperature cubic phases. Comparing the results with those from FAPbBr3, reveal that the time scale, barrier to reorientation and the geometry of reorientational motion of the FA cation are significantly different for the two halides. We note that this dependence of the dynamic properties of the A-site cation on the halide, is unique to the FA series; the geometry of methylammonium (MA) cation dynamics in MAPbX3 is known to be insensitive to different halides.

Two seemingly similar crystal structures of the low-temperature (~100 K) MAPbX$_3$ (X=I,Br,Cl) perovskites, but with different relative Methylammonium (MA) ordering, have appeared as representatives of this orthorhombic phase. Distinguishing them by X-ray diffraction experiments is difficult and conventional first-principles based molecular-dynamics approaches are often too computationally intensive to be feasible. Therefore, to determine the thermodynamically stable structure, we use a recently introduced on-the-fly Machine-Learning Force Field method, which reduces the computation time from years to days. The molecules exhibit a large degree of anharmonic motion depending on temperature: i.e. rattling, twisting and tumbling. We observe the crystal's 'librational pathways' while slowly heating it in isothermal-isobaric simulations. Marked differences in the thermal evolution of structural parameters allow us to determine the real structure of the system via a comparison with experimentally determined crystal structures.

We present a combination of thermodynamic and dynamic experimental signatures of a disorder driven dynamic cooperative paramagnet in a 50% site diluted triangular lattice spin-1/2 system, Y$_2$CuTiO$_6$. Magnetic ordering and spin freezing are absent down to 50 mK, far below the Curie Weiss scale of ~-134 K. We observe scaling collapses of the magnetic field- and temperature-dependent magnetic heat capacity and magnetisation data, respectively, in conformity with expectations from the random singlet physics. Chemical exfoliation of MoS$_2$ via Li-intercalation route has led to many desirable properties and spectacular applications due to the presence of a metastable state in addition to the stable H phase. However, the nature of the specific metastable phase formed, and its basic charge conduction properties have remained controversial. Using spatially resolved Raman spectroscopy (~1 micrometer resolution) and photoelectron spectroscopy (~120 nm resolution), we probe such chemically exfoliated MoS$_2$ samples in comparison to a mechanically exfoliated H phase sample and confirm that the dominant metastable state formed by this approach is a distorted T' state with a small semiconducting gap. Investigating two such samples with different extents of Li residues present, we establish that Li+ ions, not only help to exfoliate MoS$_2$ into few layer samples, but also contribute to enhancing the relative stability of the metastable state as well as dope the system with electrons, giving rise to a lightly doped small bandgap system with the T' structure, responsible for its spectacular properties., Comment: 34 pages, Main manuscript + Supplementary Material

MoS_2 in its two-dimensional (2D) form is known to exhibit many fundamentally interesting and technologically important properties. One of the most popular routes to form extensive amount of such 2D samples is the chemical exfoliation route. However, the nature and origin of the specific polymorph of MoS_2 primarily responsible for such spectacular properties has remained controversial with claims of both T and T' phases as well as metallic and semiconducting natures. We show that a comprehensive scrutiny of the available literature data of Raman spectra from such samples allow little scope for such ambiguities, providing overwhelming evidence for the formation of the T' phase as the dominant metastable state in all such samples. We also explain that this small band-gap T' phase may attain substantial conductivity due to thermal and chemical doping of charge-carriers, explaining the contradictory claims of metallic and semiconducting nature of such samples, thereby attaining a consistent view of all reports available so far., Comment: 22 pages, 6 Figures. On a lattice composed of triangular plaquettes where antiferromagnetic exchange interactions between localized spins cannot be simultaneously satisfied, the system becomes geometrically frustrated with magnetically disordered phases remarkably different from a simple paramagnet. Spin liquid belongs to one of these exotic states, in which a macroscopic degeneracy of the ground state gives rise to the rich spectrum of collective phenomena. Here, we report on the discovery of a new magnetic state in the heterostructures derived from a single unit cell (111)-oriented spinel CoCr2O4 sandwiched between nonmagnetic Al2O3 spacers. The artificial quasi-two-dimensional material composed of three triangle and one kagome atomic planes shows a degree of magnetic frustration which is almost two orders of magnitude enlarged compared to the bulk crystals. Combined resonant X-ray absorption and torque magnetometry measurements confirm that the designer system exhibits no sign of spin ordering down to 30 mK, implying a possible realization of a quantum spin liquid state in the two dimensional limit.

Tailoring transport properties of strongly correlated electron systems in a controlled fashion counts among the dreams of materials scientists. In copper oxides, varying the carrier concentration is a tool to obtain high-temperature superconducting phases. In manganites, doping results in exotic physics such as insulator-metal transitions (IMT), colossal magnetoresistance (CMR), orbital- or charge-ordered (CO) or charge-disproportionate (CD) states. In most oxides, antiferromagnetic order and charge-disproportionation are asssociated with insulating behavior. Here we report the realization of a unique physical state that can be induced by Mo doping in LaFeO$_3$: the resulting metallic state is a site-selective Mott insulator where itinerant electrons evolving in low-energy Mo states coexist with localized carriers on the Fe sites. In addition, a local breathing-type lattice distortion induces charge disproportionation on the latter, without destroying the antiferromagnetic order. A state, combining antiferromangetism, metallicity and CD phenomena is rather rare in oxides and may be of utmost significance for future antiferromagnetic memory devices., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

We study the optical properties of the Ruddlesden-Popper series of iridates Sr$_{n+1}$Ir$_n$O$_{3n+1}$ ($n$=1, 2 and $\infty$) by solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE), where the quasiparticle (QP) energies and screened interactions $W$ are obtained by the $GW$ approximation including spin-orbit coupling. The computed optical conductivity spectra show strong excitonic effects and reproduce very well the experimentally observed double-peak structure, in particular for the spin-orbital Mott insulators Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ and Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$. However, $GW$ does not account well for the correlated metallic state of SrIrO$_3$ owing to a much too small band renormalization, and this affects the overall quality of the optical conductivity. Our analysis describes well the progressive redshift of the main optical peaks as a function of dimensionality ($n$), which is correlated with the gradual decrease of the electronic correlation (quantified by the constrained random phase approximation) towards the metallic $n=\infty$ limit. We have also assessed the quality of a computationally cheaper BSE approach that is based on a model dielectric function and conducted on top of DFT+$U$ one-electron energies. Unfortunately, this model BSE approach does not accurately reproduce the outcome of the full $GW$+BSE method and leads to larger deviations to the measured spectra., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

What is so unique in TlCuCl3 which drives so many unique magnetic features in this compound? To study these properties, here we employ a combination of ab-initio band structure, tight-binding model, and an effective quantum field theory. Within a density-functional theory (DFT) calculation, we find an unexpected bulk Dirac cone without spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Tracing back to its origin, we identify, for the first time, the presence of a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) like dimerized Cu chain lying in the 3D crystal structure. The SSH chain, combined with SOC, stipulates an anisotropic 3D Dirac cone where chiral and helical states are intertwined. As a Heisenberg interaction is introduced, we show that the dimerized Cu sublattices of the SSH chain condensate into spin-singlet, dimerized magnets. In the magnetic ground state, we also find a topological phase, distinguished by the axion angle. Finally, to study how the topological axion term couples to magnetic excitations, we derive a Chern-Simons-Ginzburg-Landau action from the 3D SSH Hamiltonian. We find that axion term provides an additional mass term to the Higgs mode, and a lifetime to paramagnons, which are independent of the quantum critical physics. Extremely large magnetoresistance (XMR), observed in transition metal dichalcogendies, WTe$_2$, has attracted recently a great deal of research interests as it shows no sign of saturation up to the magnetic field as high as 60 T, in addition to the presence of type-II Weyl fermions. Currently, there has been a lot of discussion on the role of band structure changes on the temperature dependent XMR in this compound. In this contribution, we study the band structure of WTe$_2$ using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and first-principle calculations to demonstrate that the temperature dependent band structure has no substantial effect on the temperature dependent XMR as our measurements do not show band structure changes on increasing the sample temperature between 20 and 130 K. We further observe an electronlike surface state, dispersing in such a way that it connects the top of bulk holelike band to the bottom of bulk electronlike band. Interestingly, similar to bulk states, the surface state is also mostly intact with the sample temperature. Transition-metal dichalcogenides (WTe$_2$ and MoTe$_2$) have drawn much attention, recently, because of the nonsaturating extremely large magnetoresistance (XMR) observed in these compounds in addition to the predictions of likely type-II Weyl semimetals. Contrary to the topological insulators or Dirac semimetals where XMR is linearly dependent on the field, in WTe$_2$ and MoTe$_2$ the XMR is nonlinearly dependent on the field, suggesting an entirely different mechanism. Electron-hole compensation has been proposed as a mechanism of this nonsaturating XMR in WTe$_2$, while it is yet to be clear in the case of MoTe$_2$ which has an identical crystal structure of WTe$_2$ at low temperatures. In this paper, we report low-energy electronic structure and Fermi surface topology of MoTe$_2$ using angle-resolved photoemission spectrometry (ARPES) technique and first-principle calculations, and compare them with that of WTe$_2$ to understand the mechanism of XMR. Our measurements demonstrate that MoTe$_2$ is an uncompensated semimetal, contrary to WTe$_2$ in which compensated electron-hole pockets have been identified, ruling out the applicability of charge compensation theory for the nonsaturating XMR in MoTe$_2$. A trigonal phase existing only as small patches on chemically exfoliated few layer, thermodynamically stable 1H phase of MoS2 is believed to influence critically properties of MoS2 based devices. This phase has been most often attributed to the metallic 1T phase. We investigate the electronic structure of chemically exfoliated MoS2 few layered systems using spatially resolved (lesser than 120 nm resolution) photoemission spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy in conjunction with state-of-the-art electronic structure calculations. On the basis of these results, we establish that the ground state of this phase is a small gap (~90 meV) semiconductor in contrast to most claims in the literature; we also identify the specific trigonal (1T') structure it has among many suggested ones.

We show that charge ordering (more precisely, two-sublattice bond disproportionation) in the rare earth nickelate perovskites is intimately related to a negative charge transfer energy. By adding an additional potential on the Ni d states we are able to vary the charge tranfer energy and compute relaxed structures within an ab-initio framework. We show that the difference in Ni-O bond lengths and the value of the ordered state magnetic moment correlate with the charge transfer energy and that the transition to the bond-disproportionated state occurs when the effective charge transfer energy becomes negative., Comment: 4 figures

Combining multiple emergent correlated properties such as superconductivity and magnetism within the topological matrix can have exceptional consequences in garnering new and exotic physics. Here, we study the topological surface states from a noncentrosymmetric $\alpha$-BiPd superconductor by employing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and first principle calculations. We observe that the Dirac surface states of this system have several interesting and unusual properties, compared to other topological surface states. The surface state is strongly anisotropic and the in-plane Fermi velocity varies rigorously on rotating the crystal about the $y$-axis. Moreover, it acquires an unusual band gap as a function of $k_y$, possibly due to hybridization with bulk bands, detected upon varying the excitation energy. The high efficiency of lead organo-metal-halide perovskite solar cells has raised many questions about the role of the methylammonium (MA) molecules in the Pb-I framework. Experiments indicate that the MA molecules are able to 'freely' spin around at room temperature even though they carry an intrinsic dipole moment. We have performed large supercell (2592 atoms) finite temperature ab-initio molecular dynamics calculations to study the correlation between the molecules in the framework. An underlying long range anti-ferroelectric ordering of the molecular dipoles is observed. The dynamical correlation between neighboring molecules shows a maximum around room temperature in the mid-temperature phase. In this phase, the rotations are slow enough to (partially) couple to neighbors via the Pb-I cage. This results in a collective motion of neighboring molecules in which the cage acts as the mediator. At lower and higher temperatures the motions are less correlated.

The electronic structure of transition metal oxides featuring correlated electrons can be rationalized within the Zaanen-Sawatzky-Allen framework. Following a brief description of the present paradigms of electronic behavior, we focus on the physics of rare earth nickelates as an archetype of complexity emerging within the charge transfer regime. The intriguing prospect of realizing the physics of high $T_c$ cuprates through heterostructuring resulted in a massive endeavor to epitaxially stabilize these materials in ultra-thin form. A plethora of new phenomena unfolded in such artificial structures due to the effect of epitaxial strain, quantum confinement, and interfacial charge transfer. Here we review the present status of artificial rare-earth nickelates in an effort to uncover the interconnection between the electronic and magnetic behavior and the underlying crystal structure. We conclude by discussing future directions to disentangle the puzzle regarding the origin of the metal-insulator transition, the role of oxygen holes, and the true nature of the antiferromagnetic spin configuration in the ultra-thin limit., Comment: Invited review article (Annual Review of Materials Research)

We study the effects of dilute La and Rh doping on the electronic structure of the relativistic Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ using fully relativistic and magnetically non-collinear density functional theory with the inclusion of an on-site Hubbard $U$. To model doping effects, we have adopted the supercell approach that allows for a realistic treatment of structural relaxations and electronic effects beyond a purely rigid band approach. By means of the band unfolding technique we have computed the spectral function and constructed the effective band structure and Fermi surface (FS), which are readily comparable with available experimental data. Our calculations clearly indicate that La and Rh doping can be interpreted as effective electron and (fractional) hole doping, respectively. In Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$IrO$_4$ the IMT is accompanied by a moderate renormalization of the electronic correlation substantiated by a reduction of the effective on-site Coulomb repulsion $U-J$ from 1.6 eV ($x=0$) to 1.4 eV (metallic regime $x=12.5\%$). The progressive closing of the relativistic Mott gap leads to the emergence of connected elliptical electron pockets at ($\pi$/2,$\pi$/2) and less intense features at $X$ in the FS. The substitution of Ir with the nominally isovalent Rh is accompanied by a substantial hole transfer from the Rh site to the nearest neighbor Ir sites. This shifts down the chemical potential, creates almost circular disconnected hole pockets in the FS and establishes the emergence of a two-dimensional metallic state formed by conducting Rh-planes intercalated by insulating Ir-planes. Finally, our data indicate that hole doping causes a flipping of the in-plane net ferromagnetic moment in the Rh plane and induces a magnetic transition from the AF-I to the AF-II ordering.

Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we studied the effect of the impurity potential on the electronic structure of FeTe$_{0.5}$Se$_{0.5}$ superconductor by substituting 10\% of Ni for Fe which leads to an electron doping of the system. We could resolve three hole pockets near the zone center and an electron pocket near the zone corner in the case of FeTe$_{0.5}$Se$_{0.5}$, whereas only two hole pockets near the zone center and an electron pocket near the zone corner are resolved in the case of Fe$_{0.9}$Ni$_{0.1}$Te$_{0.5}$Se$_{0.5}$, suggesting that the hole pocket having predominantly the $xy$ orbital character is very sensitive to the impurity scattering. Upon electron doping, the size of the hole pockets decrease and the size of the electron pockets increase as compared to the host compound. However, the observed changes in the size of the electron and hole pockets are not consistent with the rigid-band model. Moreover, the effective mass of the hole pockets is reduced near the zone center and of the electron pockets is increased near the zone corner in the doped Fe$_{0.9}$Ni$_{0.1}$Te$_{0.5}$Se$_{0.5}$ as compared to FeTe$_{0.5}$Se$_{0.5}$. We have revisited the valence band electronic structure of NiO by means of hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES) together with theoretical calculations using both the GW method and the local density approximation + dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT) approaches. The effective impurity problem in DMFT is solved through the exact diagonalization (ED) method. We show that the LDA+DMFT method alone cannot explain all the observed structures in the HAXPES spectra. GW corrections are required for the O bands and Ni-s and p derived states to properly position their binding energies. Our results establish that a combination of the GW and DMFT methods is necessary for correctly describing the electronic structure of NiO in a proper ab-initio framework. We also demonstrate that the inclusion of photoionization cross section is crucial to interpret the HAXPES spectra of NiO.We argue that our conclusions are general and that the here suggested approach is appropriate for any complex transition metal oxide., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures

The development of high efficiency perovskite solar cells has sparked a multitude of measurements on the optical properties of these materials. For the most studied methylammonium(MA)PbI$_3$ perovskite, a large range (6-55 meV) of exciton binding energies has been reported by various experiments. The existence of excitons at room temperature is unclear. For the MAPb$X_3$ perovskites we report on relativistic $GW$-BSE calculations. This method is capable to directly calculate excitonic properties from first-principles. At low temperatures it predicts exciton binding energies in agreement with the reported 'large' values. For MAPbI$_3$, phonon modes present in this frequency range have a negligible contribution to the ionic screening. By calculating the polarisation in time from finite temperature molecular dynamics, we show that at room temperature this does not change. We therefore exclude ionic screening as an explanation for the experimentally observed reduction of the exciton binding energy at room temperature.

Strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effects of heavy $d$-orbital elements have long been neglected in describing the ground states of their compounds thereby overlooking a variety of fascinating and yet unexplored magnetic and electronic states, until recently. The spin-orbit entangled electrons in such compounds can get stabilized into unusual spin-orbit multiplet $J$-states which warrants severe investigations. Here we show using detailed magnetic and thermodynamic studies and theoretical calculations the ground state of Ba$_3$ZnIr$_2$O$_9$, a 6$H$ hexagonal perovskite is a close realisation of the elusive $J$~=~0 state. However, we find that local Ir moments are spontaneously generated due to the comparable energy scales of the singlet-triplet splitting driven by SOC and the superexchange interaction mediated by strong intra-dimer hopping. While the Ir ions within the structural Ir$_2$O$_9$ dimer prefers to form a spin-orbit singlet state (SOS) with no resultant moment, substantial interdimer exchange interactions from a frustrated lattice ensure quantum fluctuations till the lowest measured temperatures and stabilize a spin-orbital liquid phase., Comment: Main Text: 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 table; Supplementary: 4 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables

We put forward a scheme to study the anisotropic magnetic couplings in Sr2IrO4 by mapping fully relativistic constrained noncollinear density functional theory including an on-site Hubbard U correction onto a general spin model Hamiltonian. This procedure allows for the simultaneous account and direct control of the lattice, spin and orbital interactions within a fully ab initio scheme. We compute the isotropic, single site anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) coupling parameters, and clarify that the origin of the canted magnetic state in Sr2IrO4 arises from the interplay between structural distortions and the competition between isotropic exchange and DM interactions. A complete magnetic phase diagram with respect to the tetragonal distortion and the rotation of IrO6 octahedra is constructed, revealing the presence of two types of canted to collinear magnetic transitions: a spin-flop transition with increasing tetragonal distortion and a complete quenching of the basal weak ferromagnetic moment below a critical octahedral rotation.

The origin of a high Neel temperature in a 5$d$ oxide, NaOsO$_3$, has been analyzed within the mean-field limit of a multiband Hubbard model and compared with the analogous 4$d$ oxide, SrTcO$_3$. Our analysis shows that there are a lot of similarities in both these oxides on the dependence of the the effective exchange interaction strength ($J_0$) on the electron-electron interaction strength ($U$). However, the relevant value of $U$ in each system puts them in different portions of the parameter space. Although the Neel temperature for NaOsO$_3$ is less than that for SrTcO$_3$, our results suggest that there could be examples among other 5$d$ oxides which have a higher Neel temperature. We have also examined the stability of the G-type antiferromagnetic state found in NaOsO$_3$ as a function of electron doping within GGA+U calculations and find a robust G-type antiferromagnetic metallic state stabilized. The most surprising aspect of the doped results is the rigid band-like evolution of the electronic structure which indicates that the magnetism in NaOsO$_3$ is not driven by fermi surface nesting., Comment: Accepted in Phys. Scattering of charge carriers and flicker noise in electrical transport are the central performance limiting factors in electronic devices, but their microscopic origin in molybdenum disulphide~(MoS$_2$)-based field effect transistors remains poorly understood. Here, we show that both carrier scattering and low-frequency $1/f$ noise in mechanically exfoliated ultra-thin MoS$_2$ layers are determined by the localized trap states located within the MoS$_2$ channel itself. The trap states not only act as Coulomb scattering centers that determine transport in both equilibrium ($eV< k_BT$) and non-equilibrium ($eV>k_BT$) regimes, where $V$ and $T$ are the source drain bias and temperature respectively, but also exchange carriers with the channel to produce the conductivity noise. The internal origin of the trap states was further confirmed by studying noise in MoS$_2$ films deposited on crystalline boron nitride substrates. We report results of magnetization and ac susceptibility measurements down to very low fields on a single crystal of the perovskite manganite, La$_{0.82}$Ca$_{0.18}$MnO$_3$. This composition falls in the intriguing ferromagnetic insulator region of the manganite phase diagram. In contrast to earlier beliefs, our investigations reveal that the system is magnetically (and in every other sense) single-phase with a ferromagnetic ordering temperature of $\sim$ 170 K. However, this ferromagnetic state is magnetically frustrated, and the system exhibits pronounced glassy dynamics below 90 K. Based on measured dynamical properties, we propose that this quasi-long-ranged ferromagnetic phase, and associated superspin glass behavior, is the true magnetic state of the system, rather than being a macroscopic mixture of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases as often suggested. Our results provide an understanding of the quantum phase transition from an antiferromagnetic insulator to a ferromagnetic metal via this ferromagnetic insulating state as a function of $x$ in La$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$, in terms of the possible formation of magnetic polarons., Comment: to appear in PRX

NiS, exhibiting a text-book example of a first-order transition with many unusual properties at low temperatures, has been variously described in terms of conflicting descriptions of its ground state during the past several decades. We calculate these physical properties within first-principle approaches based on the density functional theory and conclusively establish that all experimental data can be understood in terms of a rather unusual ground state of NiS that is best described as a self-doped, nearly compensated, antiferromagnetic metal, resolving the age-old controversy. We trace the origin of this novel ground state to the specific details of the crystal structure, band dispersions and a sizable Coulomb interaction strength that is still sub-critical to drive the system in to an insulating state. We also show how the specific antiferromagnetic structure is a consequence of the less-discussed 90 degree and less than 90 degree superexchange interactions built in to such crystal structures.

Extensively studied Mn-doped semiconductor nanocrystals have invariably exhibited photoluminescence (PL) over a narrow energy window of width <= 149 meV in the orange-red region and a surprisingly large spectral width (>= 180 meV), contrary to its presumed atomic-like origin. Carrying out emission measurements on individual single nanocrystals and supported by ab initio calculations, we show that Mn PL emission, in fact, can (i) vary over a much wider range (~ 370 meV) covering the deep green-deep red region and (ii) exhibit widths substantially lower (~ 60-75 meV) than reported so far, opening newer application possibilities and requiring a fundamental shift in our perception of the emission from Mn-doped semiconductor nanocrystals., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Mn-doped SrTiO_3.0, when synthesized free of impurities, is a paramagnetic insulator with interesting dielectric properties. Since delocalized charge carriers are known to promote ferromagnetism in a large number of systems via diverse mechanisms, we have looked for the possibility of any intrinsic, spontaneous magnetization by simultaneous doping of Mn ions and electrons into SrTiO_3 via oxygen vacancies, thereby forming SrTi_(1-x)Mn_xO_(3-d), to the extent of making the doped system metallic. We find an absence of any enhancement of the magnetization in the metallic sample when compared with a similarly prepared Mn doped, however, insulating sample. Our results, thus, are not in agreement with a recent observation of a weak ferromagnetism in metallic Mn doped SrTiO_3 system., Comment: 10 pages and 4 figures

We observe an unusual tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) phenomenon in a composite of La$_{2/3}$Sr$_{1/3}$MnO$_{3}$ with CoFe$_{2}$O$_{4}$ where the TMR versus applied magnetic field loop suggests a "negative coercive field". Tracing its origin back to a "dipolar-biasing" of La$_{2/3}$Sr$_{1/3}$MnO$_{3}$ by CoFe$_{2}$O$_{4}$, we show that the TMR of even a single composite can be tuned continuously so that the resistance peak or the highest sensitivity of the TMR can be positioned anywhere on the magnetic field axis with a suitable magnetic history of the sample. Naturally occurring spin-valve-type magnetoresistance (SVMR), recently observed in Sr2FeMoO6 samples, suggests the possibility of decoupling the maximal resistance from the coercivity of the sample. Here we present the evidence that SVMR can be engineered in specifically designed and fabricated core-shell nanoparticle systems, realized here in terms of soft magnetic Fe3O4 as the core and hard magnetic insulator CoFe2O4 as the shell materials. We show that this provides a magnetically switchable tunnel barrier that controls the magnetoresistance of the system, instead of the magnetic properties of the magnetic grain material, Fe3O4, and thus establishing the feasibility of engineered SVMR structures., Comment: Copyright (2013) American Institute of Physics. Unusual low temperature magneto-resistance (MR) of ferromagnetic Sr$_{2}$FeMoO$_{6}$ polycrystals has been attributed to magnetically hard grain boundaries which act as spin valves. We detected the different magnetic hysteresis curves for the grains and the grain boundaries of polycrystalline Sr$_{2}$FeMoO$_{6}$ by utilizing the different probing depths of the different detection modes of x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), namely, the total electron yield (TEY) mode (probing depth $\sim$5 nm) and the total fluorescence yield (TFY) mode (probing depth $\sim$100 nm). At 20 K, the magnetic coercivity detected in the TEY mode ($H_{\rm c,TEY}$) was several times larger than that in the TFY mode ($H_{\rm c,TFY}$), indicating harder ferromagnetism of the grain boundaries than that of the grains. At room temperature, the grain boundary magnetism became soft and $H_{\rm c,TEY}$ and $H_{\rm c,TFY}$ were nearly the same. From line-shape analysis of the XAS and XMCD spectra, we found that in the grain boundary region the ferromagnetic component is dominated by Fe$^{2+}$ or well-screened signals while the non-magnetic component is dominated by Fe$^{3+}$ or poorly-screened signals., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

All-Heusler multilayer structures have been investigated by means of high kinetic x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, aiming to address the amount of disorder and interface diffusion induced by annealing of the multilayer structure. The studied multilayers consist of ferromagnetic Co$_2$MnGe and non-magnetic Rh$_2$CuSn layers with varying thicknesses. We find that diffusion begins already at comparably low temperatures between 200 $^{\circ}$C and 250 $^{\circ}$C, where Mn appears to be most prone to diffusion. We also find evidence for a 4 {\AA} thick magnetically dead layer that, together with the identified interlayer diffusion, are likely reasons for the small magnetoresistance found for current-perpendicular-to-plane giant magneto-resistance devices based on this all-Heusler system.

We report magnetic, dielectric and magnetodielectric responses of pure monoclinic bulk phase of partially-disordered La2NiMnO6, exhibiting a spectrum of unusual properties and establish that this system intrinsically is a true multiglass with a large magnetodielectric coupling (8-20%) over a wide range of temperatures (150 - 300 K). Specifically, our results establish a unique way to obtain colossal magnetodielectricity, independent of any striction effects, by engineering the asymmetric hopping contribution to the dielectric constant via the tuning of the relative spin orientations between neighboring magnetic ions in a transition metal oxide system. By employing x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), we have been able to establish the occurrence of charge-transfer doping in few-layer graphene covered with electron acceptor (TCNE) and donor (TTF) molecules. We have performed quantitative estimates of the extent of charge transfer in these complexes and elucidated the origin of unusual shifts of their Raman G bands and explained the differences in the dependence of conductivity on n- and p-doping. The study unravels the cause of the apparent difference between the charge-transfer doping and electrochemical doping., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

The microscopic origin of the high Neel temperature (T_N) observed experimentally in SrTcO_3 has been examined using a combination of ab-initio electronic structure calculations and mean-field solutions of a multiband Hubbard model. The G-type antiferromagnetic state is found to be robust for a large region of parameter space, with large stabilization energies found, surprisingly, for small values of intraatomic exchange interaction strength as well as large bandwidths. The microscopic origin of this is traced to specific aspects associated with the d3 configuration at the transition-metal site. Considering values of interaction strengths appropriate for SrTcO3 and the corresponding 3d oxide SrMnO_3, we find a ratio of 4:1 for the TN as well as magnitudes consistent with experiment.

We studied structural and magnetic properties of a series of insulating double perovskite compounds, La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuRuO$_{6}$ (0 $\le$ x $\le$ 1), representing doping via \textit{A}-site substitution. The end members La$_{2}$CuRuO$_{6}$ and LaSrCuRuO$_{6}$ form in monoclinic structure while the intermediate Sr doped compounds stabilise in triclinic structure. The Cu and Ru ions sit on alternate B-sites of the perovskite lattice with $\sim$15% anti-site defects in the undoped sample while the Sr doped samples show a tendency to higher ordering at B-sites. The undoped (x = 0) compound shows a ferrimagnetic-like behaviour at low temperatures. In surprising contrast to the usual expectation of an enhancement of ferromagnetic interaction on doping, an antiferromagnetic-like ground state is realized for all doped samples (x $>$ 0). Heat capacity measurements indicate the absence of any long range magnetic order in any of these compounds. The magnetic relaxation and memory effects observed in all compounds suggest glassy dynamical properties associated with magnetic disorder and frustration. We show that the observed magnetic properties are dominated by the competition between the nearest neighbour Ru -- O -- Cu 180$^\circ$ superexchange interaction and the next nearest neighbour Ru -- O -- O -- Ru 90$^\circ$ superexchange interaction as well as by the formation of anti-site defects with interchanged Cu and Ru positions. Our calculated exchange interaction parameters from first principles calculations for $x$ = 0 and $x$ = 1 support this interpretation., Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures

Several doped 6H hexagonal ruthenates, having the general formula Ba3MRu2O9, have been studied over a significant period of time in order to understand the unusual magnetism of ruthenium metal. However, among them, the M=Fe compound appears different since it is observed that unlike others, the 3d Fe ions and 4d Ru ions can easily exchange their crystallographic positions and as a result many possible magnetic interactions become realizable. The present study involving several experimental methods on this compound establish that the magnetic structure of Ba3FeRu2O9 is indeed very different from all other 6H ruthenates. Local structural study reveals that the possible Fe/Ru-site disorder further extends to create local chemical inhomogeneity, affecting the high temperature magnetism of this material. There is a gradual decrease of 57Fe M\"ossbauer spectral intensity with decreasing temperature (below 100 K), which reveals that there is a large spread in the magnetic ordering temperatures, corresponding to many spatially inhomogeneous regions. However, finally at about 25 K, the whole compound is found to take up a global glass-like magnetic ordering., Comment: 24 page, 7 figures

The unusual magnetoresistance (MR) behavior in Sr2FeMoO6, recently termed as spin-valve type MR (SVMR), presents several anomalies that are little understood so far. The difficulty in probing the origin of this phenomenon, arising from the magnetic property of only a small volume fraction of the ferromagnetic bulk, is circumvented in the present study by the use of ac susceptibility measurements that are sensitive to the slope rather than the magnitude of the magnetization. The present study unravels a spin-glass (SG) like surface layer around each soft ferromagnetic (FM) grain of Sr2FeMoO6. It is also observed that there is a very strong exchange coupling between the two, generating `exchange bias' effect, which consequently creates the `valve', responsible for the unusual MR effects., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures

We study the phenomenon of self-assembly of silica micro-spheres on a glass plate during evaporation of the solvent from a colloidal suspension. Our experiments unveil an interesting competition between ordering and compaction in a strongly driven, out of equilibrium system arising from a slowing down of dynamics due to an impending glass transition. A suitable choice of experimental conditions minimizing the influence of many other competing phenomena that usually complicate probing of this underlying physics is crucial for our study. Using NMTO-downfolding technique we have revisited the issue of relative stability between zincblende (ZB) and wurtzite (WZ) symmetries in case of CdS, CdSe and CdTe semiconductors. Our computed ionicity factors using accurate NMTO-downfolding successfully brings out the right trend within the CdX series - CdS being most ionic stabilizes in WZ symmetry while CdSe and CdTe being more covalent stabilizes in ZB symmetry. Our NMTO constructed Wannier functions corresponding to only valence bands provide a nice demonstration of this fact. Employing first principles density functional calculations, together with solution of the low-energy, model Hamiltonian constructed in a first principles manner, we explored the origin of magnetism and $T_c$ trend in Cr-based double perovskite series, Sr$_2$CrB$'$O$_6$ (B$'$=W/Re/Os). Our study shows that the apparently puzzling $T_c$ trend in Sr$_2$CrB$'$O$_6$ (B$'$=W/Re/Os) series can be understood in terms of the interplay of the hybridization driven mechanism and the super-exchange mechanism., Comment: to be appeared in Phys. Combining experiments with first principles calculations, we show that site-specific doping of Mn into SrTiO3 has a decisive influence on the dielectric properties of these doped systems. We find that phonon contributions to the dielectric constant invariably decrease sharply on doping at any site. However, a sizable, random dipolar contribution only for Mn at the Sr site arises from a strong off-centric displacement of Mn in spite of Mn being in a non-d0 state; this leads to a large dielectric constant at higher temperatures and gives rise to a relaxor ferroelectric behavior at lower temperatures. We investigated the rare-earth transition metal oxide series, Ln2CuTiO6 (Ln=Y, Dy, Ho, Er and Yb), crystallizing in the hexagonal structure with non-centrosymmetric P63cm space group for possible occurrences of multiferroic properties. Our results show that while these compounds, except Ln=Y, exhibit a low temperature antiferromagnetic transition due to the ordering of the rare-earth moments, the expected ferroelectric transition is frustrated by the large size difference between Cu and Ti at the B-site. Interestingly, this leads these compounds to attain a rare and unique combination of desirable paraelectric properties with high dielectric constants, low losses and weak temperature and frequency dependencies. First-principles calculations establish these exceptional properties result from a combination of two effects. A significant difference in the MO5 polyhedral sizes for M = Cu and M = Ti suppress the expected co-operative tilt pattern of these polyhedra, required for the ferroelectric transition, leading to relatively large values of the dielectric constant for every compound investigated in this series. Additionally, it is shown that the majority contribution to the dielectric constant arises from intermediate-frequency polar vibrational modes, making it relatively stable against any temperature variation. Changes in the temperature stability of the dielectric constant amongst different members of this series are shown to arise from changes in relative contributions from soft polar modes., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. The metal to insulator transition in the charge transfer NiS{2-x}Se{x} compound has been investigated through infrared reflectivity. Measurements performed by applying pressure to pure NiS2 (lattice contraction) and by Se-alloying (lattice expansion) reveal that in both cases an anomalous metallic state is obtained. We find that optical results are not compatible with the linear Se-alloying vs Pressure scaling relation previously established through transport, thus pointing out the substantially different microscopic origin of the two transitions., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys.
