We present a comprehensive study based on multi-wavelength observations from the NuSTAR, NICER, Swift, Fermi, NEOWISE, and ATCA telescopes during the 2022 outburst of the black hole X-ray binary IGR J17091-3624. Our investigation concentrates on the heartbeat-like variability in the X-ray emission, with the aim of using it as a tool to unravel the origin of the non-thermal emission during the heartbeat state. Through X-ray timing and spectral analysis, we observe that the heartbeat-like variability correlates with changes in the disk temperature, supporting the disk radiation pressure instability scenario. Moreover, in addition to a Comptonization component, our time-averaged and phase-resolved spectroscopy reveal the presence of a power-law component that varies independently from the disk component. Combined with the radio to X-ray spectral energy distribution fitting, our results suggest that the power-law component could originate from synchrotron self-Compton radiation in the jet, which requires a strong magnetic field of about $B = (0.3$-$3.5)\times10^6$ G. Additionally, assuming that IGR J17091-3624 and GRS 1915+105 share the same radio-X-ray correlation coefficient during both the hard and the heartbeat states, we obtain a distance of $13.7\pm2.3$ kpc for IGR J17091-3624., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables; accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the discovery of X-ray polarization from the neutron star low-mass X-ray binary and Z-source, GX~340$+$0, using an Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) observation in March 2024. Along with the IXPE observation, we conducted an extensive X-ray and radio monitoring campaign to ascertain the source properties during and around the IXPE observation. The source was within the horizontal branch throughout the multiwavelength campaign. We measured a significant X-ray polarization in 2--8 keV with polarization degree (PD) = $4.02 \pm 0.35$% and polarization angle (PA) = $37.6 \pm 2.5^\circ$. The energy-dependent polarization indicates that in the 2-2.5 keV energy range, the PA is much lower, $\sim9\pm8^\circ$, while other energy bands are consistent with the PA found over 2.5--8 keV. The simultaneous AstroSat-IXPE spectro-polarimetric observations provide some evidence for independent polarization from various spectral components, hinting at a disparity in the PA from the accretion disk and the Comptonized emission, while suggesting an unpolarized emission from the blackbody component. Radio observations in the 0.7--9 GHz frequency range reveal a non-detection of radio emission in 0.7-1.5 GHz and a significant detection in 5.5--9 GHz, suggesting the presence of a spectral break in 1.5-5.5 GHz. Using ATCA observation we place upper limits on the radio polarization at $<$6% on the linear polarization and $<$4% on the circular polarization at 3$\sigma$ level. Multi-wavelength polarimetry and radio observations of Swift J1727.8-1613 at the beginning of its recent 2023 outburst suggested the presence of a bright compact jet aligned in the north-south direction, which could not be confirmed without high angular resolution images. Using the Very Long Baseline Array and the Long Baseline Array, we imaged Swift J1727.8-1613, during the hard/hard-intermediate state, revealing a bright core and a large, two-sided, asymmetrical, resolved jet. The jet extends in the north-south direction, at a position angle of $-0.60\pm0.07\deg$ East of North. At 8.4 GHz, the entire resolved jet structure is $\sim110 (d/2.7\,\text{kpc})/\sin i$ AU long, with the southern approaching jet extending $\sim80 (d/2.7\,\text{kpc})/\sin i$ AU from the core, where $d$ is the distance to the source and $i$ is the inclination of the jet axis to the line of sight. These images reveal the most resolved continuous X-ray binary jet, and possibly the most physically extended continuous X-ray binary jet ever observed. Based on the brightness ratio of the approaching and receding jets, we put a lower limit on the intrinsic jet speed of $\beta\geq0.27$ and an upper limit on the jet inclination of $i\leq74\deg$. In our first observation we also detected a rapidly fading discrete jet knot $66.89\pm0.04$ mas south of the core, with a proper motion of $0.66\pm0.05$ mas hour$^{-1}$, which we interpret as the result of a downstream internal shock or a jet-ISM interaction, as opposed to a transient relativistic jet launched at the beginning of the outburst., Comment: Accepted in ApJL

Modelling of colloidal and nano-suspension transport in porous media has garnered significant attention due to the prevalence of these processes in many engineering applications. A number of experimental studies have reported retention profiles after coreflooding that are hyper-exponential, a feature that the traditional models for deep bed filtration are unable to capture. The aim of this work is the development of a model for binary particle transport which can account for hyper-exponential retention profiles (HERPs). Averaging of the binary model results in a non-linear dependence of the capture rate on the suspended particle concentration. The averaged model demonstrates how nonlinear capture behaviour arises due to particle heterogeneity even when individual particle populations filter traditionally. The model establishes that nonlinear capture behaviour, including the prediction of HERPs, is possible even for dilute particle suspensions given that particle heterogeneity is significant. An exact solution of the colloidal transport equations is presented for any non-linear suspension function and any step-wise-constant injected concentration. The binary suspension function cannot be written explicitly, and so we present asymptotic expansions for several limiting cases where the suspension function can be expressed directly. The asymptotic expansions show good agreement with the binary model, and correctly capture the HERPs calculated with the exact solution. Several laboratory tests exhibiting HERPs have been matched by the traditional, binary, and asymptotic expansion models. The traditional model significantly deviates from the laboratory data due to its inability to capture the hyper-exponential behaviour, while both the binary and asymptotic models capture this behaviour well, Comment: 29 pages, 11 figures

Relativistic jets are observed from accreting and cataclysmic transients throughout the Universe, and have a profound affect on their surroundings. Despite their importance, their launch mechanism is not known. For accreting neutron stars, the speed of their compact jets can reveal whether the jets are powered by magnetic fields anchored in the accretion flow or in the star itself, but to-date no such measurements exist. These objects can display bright explosions on their surface due to unstable thermonuclear burning of recently accreted material, called type-I X-ray bursts, during which the mass accretion rate increases. Here, we report on bright flares in the jet emission for a few minutes after each X-ray burst, attributed to the increased accretion rate. With these flares, we measure the speed of a neutron star compact jet to be $v=0.38^{+0.11}_{-0.08}$c, much slower than those from black holes at similar luminosities. This discovery provides a powerful new tool in which we can determine the role that individual system properties have on the jet speed, revealing the dominant jet launching mechanism., Comment: 27 pages, 7 figures. The fourth-DR3 version (4FGL-DR3) of the Fermi/LAT catalogue of $\gamma$-ray sources contains $\sim$ 1000 objects at a galactic latitude |b| > 10$^{\circ}$ which are not identified with an optical counterpart (UGS). We performed a systematic study of these sources, focusing on 190 objects that have a unique X-ray counterpart in the available Swift/XRT observations. Optical counterparts are then selected, and for 33 sources optical spectra were found in the literature. We found that 21 can be classified as BL Lac objects. Among these we were able to provide the redshift for 8 of them while for 2 others we established a lower limit to the redshift by detecting intervening absorption. The other 12 objects display optical spectra with prominent emission lines (0.036

We studied the multiband properties of two ultraluminous X-ray sources (2CXO J225728.9-410211 = X-1 and 2CXO J225724.7-410343 = X-2) and their surroundings, in the spiral galaxy NGC 7424. Both sources have approached X-ray luminosities L_{X} ~ 10^{40} erg/s at some epochs. Thanks to a more accurate astrometric solution (based on Australia Telescope Compact Array and Gaia data), we identified the point-like optical counterpart of X-1, which looks like an isolated B8 supergiant (M ~ 9 Msun, age ~ 30 Myr). Instead, X-2 is in a star-forming region (size of about 100 pc x 150 pc), near young clusters and ionized gas. Very Large Telescope long-slit spectra show a spatially extended region of HeII 4686 emission around the X-ray position, displaced by about 50 pc from the brightest star cluster, which corresponds to the peak of lower-ionization line emission. We interpret the HeII 4686 emission as a signature of X-ray photo-ionization from the ULX, while the other optical lines are consistent with UV ionization in an ordinary HeII region. The luminosity of this He^{++} nebula puts it in the same class as other classical photo-ionized ULX nebulae such as those around Holmberg II X-1 and NGC 5408 X-1. We locate a strong (5.5-GHz luminosity nu L_{nu} ~ 10^{35} erg/s), steep-spectrum, unresolved radio source at the peak of the low-ionization lines, and discuss alternative physical scenarios for the radio emission. Finally, we use WISE data to obtain an independent estimate of the reddening of the star-forming clump around X-2., Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures, 6.7 MB. We use soft x-ray vector-ptychographic tomography to determine the three-dimensional magnetization field in superparamagnetic nanoparticles self-assembled at the liquid-liquid interface and reveal the magnetic order induced by layered structure. The spins in individual nanoparticles become more aligned with increasing number of layers, resulting in a larger net magnetization. Our experimental results show a magnetic short-range order in the monolayer due to the proliferation of thermally induced magnetic vortices and a magnetic long-range order in the bilayer and trilayer, stemming from the strengthened dipolar interactions that effectively suppress thermal fluctuations. We also observe a screening effect of magnetic vortices and the attractive interaction between the magnetic vortices with opposite topological charges. Our work demonstrates the crucial role of layered structure in shaping the magnetization of nanoparticle assemblies, providing new opportunities to modulate these properties through strategic layer engineering.

Black hole X-ray binaries (BH XRBs) are ideal targets to study the connection between accretion inflow and jet outflow. Here we present quasi-simultaneous, multi-wavelength observations of the Galactic black hole system MAXI J1820+070, throughout its 2018-2019 outburst. Our data set includes coverage from the radio through X-ray bands from 17 different instruments/telescopes, and encompasses 19 epochs over a 7 month time period, resulting in one of the most well-sampled multi-wavelength data sets of a BH XRB outburst to date. With our data, we compile and model the broad-band spectra of this source using a phenomenological model that includes emission from the jet, companion star, and accretion flow. This modeling allows us to track the evolution of the spectral break in the jet spectrum, a key observable that samples the jet launching region. We find that the spectral break location changes over at least $\approx3$ orders of magnitude in electromagnetic frequency over this period. Using these spectral break measurements, we link the full cycle of jet behavior, including the rising, quenching, and re-ignition, to the changing accretion flow properties as the source evolves through its different accretion states. Our analyses show a consistent jet behavior with other sources in similar phases of their outbursts, reinforcing that the jet quenching and recovery may be a global feature of BH XRB systems in outburst. The Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) measured with high significance the X-ray polarization of the brightest Z-source Scorpius X-1, resulting in the nominal 2-8 keV energy band in a polarization degree of 1.0(0.2)% and a polarization angle of 8(6){\deg} at 90% of confidence level. This observation was strictly simultaneous with observations performed by NICER, NuSTAR, and Insight-HXMT, which allowed for a precise characterization of its broad-band spectrum from soft to hard X-rays. The source has been observed mainly in its soft state, with short periods of flaring. We also observed low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations. From a spectro-polarimetric analysis, we associate a polarization to the accretion disk at <3.2% at 90% of confidence level, compatible with expectations for an electron-scattering dominated optically thick atmosphere at the Sco X-1 inclination of 44{\deg}; for the higher-energy Comptonized component, we obtain a polarization of 1.3(0.4)%, in agreement with expectations for a slab of Thomson optical depth of ~7 and an electron temperature of ~3 keV. A polarization rotation with respect to previous observations by OSO-8 and PolarLight, and also with respect to the radio-jet position angle, is observed. This result may indicate a variation of the polarization with the source state that can be related to relativistic precession or to a change in the corona geometry with the accretion flow.

We report on an observational campaign on the bright black hole X-ray binary Swift J1727.8$-$1613 centered around five observations by the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). These observations track for the first time the evolution of the X-ray polarization of a black hole X-ray binary across a hard to soft state transition. The 2--8 keV polarization degree decreased from $\sim$4\% to $\sim$3\% across the five observations, but the polarization angle remained oriented in the North-South direction throughout. Based on observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), we find that the intrinsic 7.25 GHz radio polarization aligns with the X-ray polarization. Assuming the radio polarization aligns with the jet direction (which can be tested in the future with higher spatial resolution images of the jet), our results imply that the X-ray corona is extended in the disk plane, rather than along the jet axis, for the entire hard intermediate state. This in turn implies that the long ($\gtrsim$10 ms) soft lags that we measure with the Neutron star Interior Composition ExploreR (NICER) are dominated by processes other than pure light-crossing delays. Moreover, we find that the evolution of the soft lag amplitude with spectral state does not follow the trend seen for other sources, implying that Swift J1727.8$-$1613 is a member of a hitherto under-sampled sub-population., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 21 pages, 8 figures

We report on the coordinated observations of the neutron star low-mass X-ray binary (NS-LMXB) \gx in X-rays (IXPE, NICER, Nustar and INTEGRAL), optical (REM and LCO), near-infrared (REM), mid-infrared (VLT VISIR), and radio (ATCA). This Z-source was observed by \IXPE twice in March-April 2023 (Obs. 1 and 2). In the radio band, the source was detected, but only upper-limits to the linear polarization were obtained at a $3\sigma$ level of $6.1\%$ at 5.5 GHz and $5.9\%$ at 9 GHz in Obs.~1 and $12.5\%$ at 5.5~GHz and $20\%$ at 9~GHz in Obs.~2. The mid-IR, near-IR and optical observations suggest the presence of a compact jet which peaks in the mid- or far-IR. The X-ray polarization degree was found to be $3.7\% \pm 0.4 \%$ (at $90\%$ confidence level) during Obs.~1 when the source was in the horizontal branch of the Z-track and $1.8\% \pm 0.4 \%$ during Obs.~2 when the source was in the normal-flaring branch. These results confirm the variation of polarization degree as a function of the position of the source in the color-color diagram as for previously observed Z-track sources (Cyg~X-2 and XTE~1701$-$462). Evidence for a variation of the polarization angle $\sim 20^\circ$ with energy is found in both observations, likely related to the different, non-orthogonal polarization angles of the disk and Comptonization components which peak at different energies., Comment: Submitted to Astronomy and Astrophysics on 06 July 2023. Star block copolymers (s-BCPs) have potential applications as novel surfactants or amphiphiles for emulsification, compatbilization, chemical transformations and separations. s-BCPs are star-shaped macromolecules comprised of linear chains of different chemical blocks (e.g., solvophilic and solvophobic blocks) that are covalently joined at one junction point. Various parameters of these macromolecules can be tuned to obtain desired surface properties, including the number of arms, composition of the arms, and the degree-of-polymerization of the blocks (or the length of the arm). This makes identification of the optimal s-BCP design highly non-trivial as the total number of plausible s-BCPs architectures is experimentally or computationally intractable. In this work, we use molecular dynamics (MD) simulations coupled with reinforcement learning based Monte Carlo tree search (MCTS) to identify s-BCPs designs that minimize the interfacial tension between polar and non-polar solvents. We first validate the MCTS approach for design of small- and medium-sized s-BCPs, and then use it to efficiently identify sequences of copolymer blocks for large-sized s-BCPs. The structural origins of interfacial tension in these systems are also identified using the configurations obtained from MD simulations. Chemical insights on the arrangement of copolymer blocks that promote lower interfacial tension were mined using machine learning (ML) techniques. Overall, this work provides an efficient approach to solve design problems via fusion of simulations and ML and provide important groundwork for future experimental investigation of s-BCPs sequences for various applications.

This paper reports the first detection of polarization in the X-rays for atoll-source 4U 1820-303, obtained with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) at 99.999% confidence level (CL). Simultaneous polarimetric measurements were also performed in the radio with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). The IXPE observations of 4U 1820-303 were coordinated with Swift-XRT, NICER, and NuSTAR aiming to obtain an accurate X-ray spectral model covering a broad energy interval. The source shows a significant polarization above 4 keV, with a polarization degree of 2.0(0.5)% and a polarization angle of -55(7) deg in the 4-7 keV energy range, and a polarization degree of 10(2)% and a polarization angle of -67(7) deg in the 7-8 keV energy bin. This polarization also shows a clear energy trend with polarization degree increasing with energy and a hint for a position-angle change of about 90 deg at 96% CL around 4 keV. The spectro-polarimetric fit indicates that the accretion disk is polarized orthogonally to the hard spectral component, which is presumably produced in the boundary/spreading layer. We do not detect linear polarization from the radio counterpart, with a 99.97% upper limit of 50% at 7.25 GHz.

We present a high time resolution, multi-frequency linear polarization analysis of Very Large Array (VLA) radio observations during some of the brightest radio flaring (~1 Jy) activity of the 2015 outburst of V404 Cygni. The VLA simultaneously captured the radio evolution in two bands (each with two 1 GHz base-bands), recorded at 5/7 GHz and 21/26 GHz, allowing for a broadband polarimetric analysis. Given the source's high flux densities, we were able to measure polarization on timescales of ~13 minutes, constituting one of the highest temporal resolution radio polarimetric studies of a black hole X-ray binary (BHXB) outburst to date. Across all base-bands, we detect variable, weakly linearly polarized emission (<1%) with a single, bright peak in the time-resolved polarization fraction, consistent with an origin in an evolving, dynamic jet component. We applied two independent polarimetric methods to extract the intrinsic electric vector position angles and rotation measures from the 5 and 7 GHz base-band data and detected a variable intrinsic polarization angle, indicative of a rapidly evolving local environment or a complex magnetic field geometry. Comparisons to the simultaneous, spatially-resolved observations taken with the Very Long Baseline Array at 15.6 GHz, do not show a significant connection between the jet ejections and the polarization state., Comment: 24 pages, 9 figures, accepted by MNRAS

Suspension-colloidal-nano transport in porous media encompasses the detachment of detrital fines against electrostatic attraction and authigenic fines by breakage, from the rock surface. While much is currently known about the underlying mechanisms governing detachment of detrital particles, including detachment criteria at the pore scale and its upscaling for the core scale, a critical gap exists due to absence of this knowledge for authigenic fines. Integrating 3D Timoshenkos beam theory of elastic cylinder deformation with CFD-based model for viscous flow around the attached particle and with strength failure criteria for particle-rock bond, we developed a novel theory for fines detachment by breakage at the pore scale. The breakage criterium derived includes analytical expressions for tensile and shear stress maxima along with two geometric diagrams which allow determining the breaking stress. This leads to an explicit formula for the breakage flow velocity. Its upscaling yields a mathematical model for fines detachment by breakage, expressed in the form of the maximum retained concentration of attached fines versus flow velocity -- maximum retention function (MRF) for breakage. We performed corefloods with piecewise constant increasing flow rates, measuring breakthrough concentration and pressure drop across the core. The behaviour of the measured data is consistent with two-population colloidal transport, attributed to detrital and authigenic fines migration. Indeed, the laboratory data show high match with the analytical model for two-population colloidal transport, which validates the proposed mathematical model for fines detachment by breakage., Comment: 38 pages, 17 figures, 1 table

Spontaneous emulsification, resulting from the assembly and accumulation of surfactants at liquid-liquid interfaces, is an interfacial instability where microdroplets are generated and diffusively spread from the interface until complete emulsification. Here, we show that an external magnetic field can modulate the assembly of paramagnetic nanoparticle surfactants (NPSs) at liquid-liquid interfaces and trigger an oversaturation in the areal density of the NPSs at the interface, as evidenced by a marked reduction in the interfacial tension, {\gamma}, and corroborated with a magnetostatic continuum theory. Despite the significant reduction in {\gamma}, the presence of the magnetic field does not cause stable interfaces to become unstable. Upon rapid removal of the field, however, an explosive ejection of a plume of microdroplets from the surface occurs, a dynamical interfacial instability which is termed explosive emulsification. This explosive event rapidly reduces the areal density of the NPSs to its pre-field level, stabilizing the interface. The ability to externally suppress or trigger the explosive emulsification and controlled generation of tens of thousands of microdroplets, uncovers an efficient energy storage and release process, that has potential applications for controlled and directed delivery of chemicals and remotely controlled soft microrobots, taking advantage of the ferromagnetic nature of the microdroplets., Comment: Main text and supporting information. We present a detailed study of the evolution of the Galactic black hole transient GRS 1716-249 during its 2016-2017 outburst at optical (Las Cumbres Observatory), mid-infrared (Very Large Telescope), near-infrared (Rapid Eye Mount telescope), and ultraviolet (the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory Ultraviolet/Optical Telescope) wavelengths, along with archival radio and X-ray data. We show that the optical/near-infrared and UV emission of the source mainly originates from a multi-temperature accretion disk, while the mid-infrared and radio emission are dominated by synchrotron emission from a compact jet. The optical/UV flux density is correlated with the X-ray emission when the source is in the hard state, consistent with an X-ray irradiated accretion disk with an additional contribution from the viscous disk during the outburst fade. We also report the long-term optical light curve of the source and find that the quiescent i-band magnitude is 21.39$\pm$0.15 mag. Furthermore, we discuss how previous estimates of the system parameters of the source are based on various incorrect assumptions, and so are likely to be inaccurate. By comparing our GRS 1716-249 dataset to those of other outbursting black hole X-ray binaries, we find that while GRS 1716-249 shows similar X-ray behaviour, it is noticeably optically fainter, if the literature distance of 2.4 kpc is adopted. Using several lines of reasoning, we argue that the source distance is further than previously assumed in the literature, likely within 4-17 kpc, with a most likely range of $\sim$4-8 kpc., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Radio continuum observations offer a new window on compact objects in globular clusters compared to typical X-ray or optical studies. As part of the MAVERIC survey, we have used the Australia Telescope Compact Array to carry out a deep (median central noise level of approximately 4 microJy per beam) radio continuum survey of 26 southern globular clusters at central frequencies of 5.5 and 9.0 GHz. This paper presents a catalogue of 1285 radio continuum sources in the fields of these 26 clusters. Considering the surface density of background sources, we find significant evidence for a population of radio sources in seven of the 26 clusters, and also identify at least 11 previously known compact objects (6 pulsars and 5 X-ray binaries). While the overall density of radio continuum sources with 7.25-GHz flux densities greater than about 20 microJy in typical globular clusters is relatively low, the survey has already led to the discovery of several exciting compact binaries, including a candidate ultracompact black hole X-ray binary in 47 Tuc. Many of the unclassified radio sources near the centres of the clusters are likely to be true cluster sources, and multi-wavelength follow-up will be necessary to classify these objects and better understand the demographics of accreting compact binaries in globular clusters., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

This paper considers (partial) identification of a variety of counterfactual parameters in binary response models with possibly endogenous regressors. Our framework allows for nonseparable index functions with multi-dimensional latent variables, and does not require parametric distributional assumptions. We leverage results on hyperplane arrangements and cell enumeration from the literature on computational geometry in order to provide a tractable means of computing the identified set. We demonstrate how various functional form, independence, and monotonicity assumptions can be imposed as constraints in our optimization procedure to tighten the identified set. Finally, we apply our method to study the effects of health insurance on the decision to seek medical treatment.

We study the problem of choosing optimal policy rules in uncertain environments using models that may be incomplete and/or partially identified. We consider a policymaker who wishes to choose a policy to maximize a particular counterfactual quantity called a policy transform. We characterize learnability of a set of policy options by the existence of a decision rule that closely approximates the maximin optimal value of the policy transform with high probability. Sufficient conditions are provided for the existence of such a rule. However, learnability of an optimal policy is an ex-ante notion (i.e. before observing a sample), and so ex-post (i.e. after observing a sample) theoretical guarantees for certain policy rules are also provided. Our entire approach is applicable when the distribution of unobservables is not parametrically specified, although we discuss how semiparametric restrictions can be used. Finally, we show possible applications of the procedure to a simultaneous discrete choice example and a program evaluation example.

We calculate the expected effects on the spectral energy distributions and light curves in X-ray binary jets from eclipses by the donor stars. Jets will be eclipsed for all inclination angles, with just the height along the jet where the eclipse takes place being set by the orbital parameters. Typically, eclipses will lead to 5-10\% reductions in the jet emission over a range of a factor of few in wavelength with a periodic modulation. In ideal systems with high inclination angles, relatively even mass ratios, and modest jet speeds, the eclipses may be deeper. We discuss how eclipses can be used to measure binary system parameters, as well as the height of the bases of the jets. We also discuss how, with data sets that will likely require future facilities, more detailed tests of models of jet physics could be made, by establishing deviations from the standard recipes for compact conical flat spectrum jets, and by determining the ingress and egress durations of the eclipses and measuring the transverse size of the jets. We provide representative calculations of expectations for different classes of systems, demonstrating that the most promising target for showing this effect in the radio band are the longer period "atoll"-class neutron star X-ray binaries, while in the optical and infrared bands, the best candidates are likely to be the most edge-on black hole X-ray binaries. High-energy neutrinos are a promising tool for identifying astrophysical sources of high and ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECR). Prospects of detecting neutrinos at high energies ($\gtrsim$TeV) from blazars have been boosted after the recent association of IceCube-170922A and TXS 0506+056. We investigate the high-energy neutrino, IceCube-190331A, a high-energy starting event (HESE) with a high likelihood of being astrophysical in origin. We initiated a Swift/XRT and UVOT tiling mosaic of the neutrino localisation, and followed up with ATCA radio observations, compiling a multiwavelength SED for the most likely source of origin. NuSTAR observations of the neutrino location and a nearby X-ray source were also performed. We find two promising counterpart in the 90% confidence localisation region and identify the brightest as the most likely counterpart. However, no Fermi/LAT $\gamma$-ray source and no prompt Swift/BAT source is consistent with the neutrino event. At this point it is unclear whether any of the counterparts produced IceCube-190331A. We note that the Helix Nebula is also consistent with the position of the neutrino event, and we calculate that associated particle acceleration processes cannot produce the required energies to generate a high-energy HESE neutrino., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures. Aims: Flip-flops are top-hat-like X-ray flux variations which occur in some transient accreting black hole binary systems and feature simultaneous changes in the spectral hardness and the Power Density Spectrum (PDS). They occur at a crucial time in the evolution of these systems, when the accretion disk emission starts to dominate over coronal emission. Flip-flops have only rarely been observed and are poorly understood. Methods: We detect 15 flip-flops in the 2018 outburst of Swift J1658.2-4242, in observations by XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, Astrosat, Swift, Insight-HXMT, INTEGRAL, and ATCA. We analyse their light curves, search for periodicities, compute their PDS, and fit their X-ray spectra, to investigate the source behaviour during flip-flop transitions, and how the interval featuring flip-flops differs from the rest of the outburst. Results: The flip-flops of Swift J1658.2-4242 are of an extreme variety, exhibiting flux differences of up to 77% within ~100s, much larger than has been seen so far. We observe radical changes in the PDS simultaneous with the sharp flux variations, featuring transitions between the Quasi-Periodic Oscillation types C and A, which have never been observed before. Changes to the PDS are delayed, but more rapid than changes in the light curve. Flip-flops occur in two intervals, separated by two weeks in which these phenomena were not seen. Transitions between the two flip-flop states occurred at random integer multiples of a fundamental period, of 2.761ks in the first interval, and 2.61ks in the second. Spectral analysis reveals the high and low flux flip-flop states to be similar, but distinct from intervals lacking flip-flops. A change in the inner temperature of the accretion disk is responsible for most of the flux difference in the flip-flops. We present a new catalogue of radio sources in the face-on spiral galaxy M83. Radio observations taken in 2011, 2015, and 2017 with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) at 5.5 and 9 GHz have detected 270 radio sources. Although a small number of these sources are background extragalactic sources, most are either H II regions or supernova remnants (SNRs) within M83 itself. Three of the six historical supernovae are detected, as is the very young remnant that had been identified in a recent study, which is likely the result of a supernova that exploded in the last ~100 years but was missed. All of these objects are generally fading with time. Confusion limits our ability to measure the radio emission from a number of the SNRs in M83, but 64 were detected in unconfused regions, and these have the approximate power-law luminosity function which has been observed in other galaxies. The SNRs in M83 are systematically smaller in diameter and brighter than those that have been detected at radio wavelengths in M33. A number of the radio sources are coincident with X-ray sources in M83; most of these coincident sources turn out to be supernova remnants. Our dual frequency observations are among the most sensitive to date for a spiral galaxy outside the Local Group; despite this we were not able to place realistic constraints on the spectral indices, and as a result, it was not possible to search for supernova remnants based on their radio properties alone., Comment: 23 pages, 17 figures, 8 tables. Infrared interferometry is a new frontier for precision ground based observing, with new instrumentation achieving milliarcsecond (mas) spatial resolutions for faint sources, along with astrometry on the order of 10 microarcseconds. This technique has already led to breakthroughs in the observations of the supermassive black hole at the Galactic centre and its orbiting stars, AGN, and exo-planets, and can be employed for studying X-ray binaries (XRBs), microquasars in particular. Beyond constraining the orbital parameters of the system using the centroid wobble and spatially resolving jet discrete ejections on mas scales, we also propose a novel method to discern between the various components contributing to the infrared bands: accretion disk, jets and companion star. We demonstrate that the GRAVITY instrument on the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) should be able to detect a centroid shift in a number of sources, opening a new avenue of exploration for the myriad of transients expected to be discovered in the coming decade of radio all-sky surveys. We also present the first proof-of-concept GRAVITY observation of a low-mass X-ray binary transient, MAXI J1820+070, to search for extended jets on mas scales. Microquasars are neutron star or black hole X-ray binaries with jets. These jets can create shock-ionized bubbles of hot plasma that can masquerade as peculiar supernova remnants (SNRs) in extragalactic surveys. To see if this is the case in the well-studied spiral galaxy M83, where one microquasar candidate (M83-MQ1) has already been identified, we studied the properties of nine SNR candidates, selected because of their elongated or irregular morphology, from the set of previously identified SNRs in that galaxy. Using multiwavelength data from Chandra, the Hubble Space Telescope, Gemini, and the Australia Telescope Compact Array, we found that at least six of our nine sources are best interpreted as SNRs. For one source, we do not have enough observational data to explain its linear morphology. Another source shows a nebular optical spectrum dominated by photo-ionization by O stars, but its excess [Fe II] and radio luminosity suggest a possible hidden SNR. Finally, one source (S2) shows an elongated structure of ionized gas, two radio sources along that line, and an accretion-powered X-ray source in between them (the Chandra source L14-139). While S2 could be a chance alignment of multiple SNRs and one X-ray binary, it seems more likely that it is a single physical structure powered by the jet from the accreting compact object. In the latter case, the size and luminosity of S2 suggest a kinetic power of around 10^{40} erg/s, in the same class as the most powerful microquasars in the local universe (e.g., S26 in NGC7793 and SS433 in our own Galaxy)., Comment: Accepted by ApJ. Nearby blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies are arguably our best local analogues of galaxies in the earlier Universe that may host relics of black hole (BH) seeds. Here we present high-resolution Chandra X-ray Observatory and Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) observations of five nearby BCDs with stellar masses of less than the Small Magellanic Cloud ($M_\star \sim 10^{7} - 10^{8.4}$ $M_\odot$). We search for signatures of accreting massive BHs at X-ray and radio wavelengths, which are more sensitive to lower BH accretion rates than optical searches. We detect a total of 10 hard X-ray sources and 10 compact radio sources at luminosities consistent with star-formation-related emission. We find one case of a spatially-coincident X-ray and radio source within the astrometric uncertainties. If the X-ray and radio emission are indeed coming from the same source, the origin of the radiation is plausibly from an active massive BH with log $(M_{\rm BH}/M_{\odot}) \sim 4.8 \pm 1.1$. However, given that the X-ray and radio emission are also coincident with a young star cluster complex, we consider the combination of an X-ray binary and a supernova remnant (or \HII region) a viable alternative explanation. Overall, we do not find compelling evidence for active massive BHs in our target BCDs, which on average have stellar masses more than an order of magnitude lower than previous samples of dwarf galaxies found to host massive BHs. Powerful relativistic jets are one of the main ways in which accreting black holes provide kinetic feedback to their surroundings. Jets launched from or redirected by the accretion flow that powers them should be affected by the dynamics of the flow, which in accreting stellar-mass black holes has shown increasing evidence for precession due to frame dragging effects that occur when the black hole spin axis is misaligned with the orbital plane of its companion star. Recently, theoretical simulations have suggested that the jets can exert an additional torque on the accretion flow, although the full interplay between the dynamics of the accretion flow and the launching of the jets is not yet understood. Here we report a rapidly changing jet orientation on a timescale of minutes to hours in the black hole X-ray binary V404 Cygni, detected with very long baseline interferometry during the peak of its 2015 outburst. We show that this can be modelled as Lense-Thirring precession of a vertically-extended slim disk that arises from the super-Eddington accretion rate. Our findings suggest that the dynamics of the precessing inner accretion disk could play a role in either directly launching or redirecting the jets within the inner few hundred gravitational radii. Similar dynamics should be expected in any strongly-accreting black hole whose spin is misaligned with the inflowing gas, both affecting the observational characteristics of the jets, and distributing the black hole feedback more uniformly over the surrounding environment., Comment: This is a pre-print of an article published in Nature. We report on a multi-wavelength study of the unclassified X-ray source CXOU J110926.4-650224 (J1109). We identified the optical counterpart as a blue star with a magnitude of $\sim$20.1 (3300-10500 $\require{mediawiki-texvc} \AA$). The optical emission was variable on timescales from hundreds to thousands of seconds. The spectrum showed prominent emission lines with variable profiles at different epochs. Simultaneous XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations revealed a bimodal distribution of the X-ray count rates on timescales as short as tens of seconds, as well as sporadic flaring activity. The average broad-band (0.3-79 keV) spectrum was adequately described by an absorbed power law model with photon index of $\Gamma$=1.63$\pm$0.01 (at 1$\sigma$ c.l.), and the X-ray luminosity was (2.16$\pm$0.04)$\times$10$^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$ for a distance of 4 kpc. Based on observations with different instruments, the X-ray luminosity has remained relatively steady over the past $\sim$15 years. J1109 is spatially associated with the gamma-ray source FL8Y J1109.8-6500, which was detected with Fermi at an average luminosity of (1.5$\pm$0.2)$\times$10$^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$ (assuming the distance of J1109) over the 0.1-300 GeV energy band between 2008 and 2016. The source was undetected during ATCA radio observations that were simultaneous with NuSTAR, down to a 3$\sigma$ flux upper limit of 18 $\mu$Jy/beam (at 7.25 GHz). We show that the phenomenological properties of J1109 point to a binary transitional pulsar candidate currently in a sub-luminous accretion disk state, and that the upper limits derived for the radio emission are consistent with the expected radio luminosity for accreting neutron stars at similar X-ray luminosities., Comment: 21 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The black hole candidate MAXI J1836-194 was discovered in 2011 when it went into an outburst, and was the subject of numerous, quasi-simultaneous, multi-wavelength observations in the radio, infrared, optical and X-rays. In this paper, we model its multi-wavelength radio to optical spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with an internal shock jet model. The jet emission is modelled on five dates of the outburst, during which the source is in the hard and hard intermediate X-ray spectral states. The model assumes that fluctuations of the jet velocity are driven by the variability in the accretion flow which is traced by the observed X-ray timing properties of the source. While the global shape of the SED is well reproduced by this model for all the studied observations, the variations in bolometric flux and typical energies require at least two parameters to evolve during the outburst. Here we investigate variations of the jet power and mean Lorentz factor, which are both found to increase with the source luminosity. Our results are compatible with the evolution of the jet Lorentz factor reported in earlier studies of this source. This paper proposes a new approach to obtain uniformly valid inference for linear functionals or scalar subvectors of a partially identified parameter defined by linear moment inequalities. The procedure amounts to bootstrapping the value functions of randomly perturbed linear programming problems, and does not require the researcher to grid over the parameter space. The low-level conditions for uniform validity rely on genericity results for linear programs. The unconventional perturbation approach produces a confidence set with a coverage probability of 1 over the identified set, but obtains exact coverage on an outer set, is valid under weak assumptions, and is computationally simple to implement.

Pixel detectors currently in use by high energy physics experiments such as ATLAS, CMS, LHCb, etc., are critical systems for tagging $B$ hadrons within particle jets. However, the performance of standard tagging algorithms begins to fall in the case of highly boosted $B$ hadrons ($\gamma \beta = p/m >200$). This paper builds on the work of our previous study that uses the jump in hit multiplicity among the pixel layers when a $B$ hadron decays within the detector volume. First, multiple $pp$ interactions within a finite luminous region were found to have little effect. Second, the study has been extended to use the multivariant techniques of an artificial neural network (ANN). Predicting the large-amplitude deformations of thin elastic sheets is difficult due to the complications of self-contact, geometric nonlinearities, and a multitude of low-lying energy states. We study a simple two-dimensional setting where an annular polymer sheet floating on an air-water interface is subjected to different tensions on the inner and outer rims. The sheet folds and wrinkles into many distinct morphologies that break axisymmetry. These states can be understood within a recent geometric approach for determining the gross shape of extremely bendable yet inextensible sheets by extremizing an appropriate area functional. Our analysis explains the remarkable feature that the observed buckling transitions between wrinkled and folded shapes are insensitive to the bending rigidity of the sheet., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We study the indentation of a thin elastic film floating at the surface of a liquid. We focus on the onset of radial wrinkles at a threshold indentation depth and the evolution of the wrinkle pattern as indentation progresses far beyond this threshold. Comparison between experiments on thin polymer films and theoretical calculations shows that the system very quickly reaches the Far from Threshold (FT) regime, in which wrinkles lead to the relaxation of azimuthal compression. Furthermore, when the indentation depth is sufficiently large that the wrinkles cover most of the film, we recognize a novel mechanical response in which the work of indentation is transmitted almost solely to the liquid, rather than to the floating film. We attribute this unique response to a nontrivial isometry attained by the deformed film, and discuss the scaling laws and the relevance of similar isometries to other systems in which a confined sheet is subjected to weak tensile loads., Comment: 5 pages, close to published version

The incidence and properties of present-day dwarf galaxies hosting massive black holes (BHs) can provide important constraints on the origin of high-redshift BH seeds. Here we present high-resolution X-ray and radio observations of the low-metallicity, star-forming, dwarf-galaxy system Mrk 709 with the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. These data reveal spatially coincident hard X-ray and radio point sources with luminosities suggesting the presence of an accreting massive BH (M_BH ~ 10^5-10^7 Msun). Based on imaging from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we find that Mrk 709 consists of a pair of compact dwarf galaxies that appear to be interacting with one another. The position of the candidate massive BH is consistent with the optical center of the southern galaxy (Mrk 709 S), while no evidence for an active BH is seen in the northern galaxy (Mrk 709 N). We derive stellar masses of M ~ 2.5 x 10^9 Msun and M ~ 1.1 x 10^9 Msun for Mrk 709 S and Mrk 709 N, respectively, and present an analysis of the SDSS spectrum of the BH-host Mrk 709 S. At a metallicity of just ~10% solar, Mrk 709 is among the most metal-poor galaxies with evidence for an active galactic nucleus. Moreover, this discovery adds to the growing body of evidence that massive BHs can form in dwarf galaxies and that deep, high-resolution X-ray and radio observations are ideally suited to reveal accreting massive BHs hidden at optical wavelengths., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

We study the effects of chirality at the segment scale on the thermodynamics of block copolymer melts using self consistent field theory. In linear diblock melts where segments of one block prefer a twisted, or cholesteric, texture, we show that melt assembly is critically sensitive to the ratio of random coil size to the preferred pitch of cholesteric twist. For weakly-chiral melts (large pitch), mesophases remain achiral, while below a critical value of pitch, two mesocopically chiral phases are stable: an undulated lamellar phase; and a phase of hexagonally-ordered helices. We show that the non-linear sensitivity of meso-scale chiral order to preferred pitch derives specifically from the geometric and thermodynamic coupling of the helical mesodomain shape to the twisted packing of chiral segments within the core, giving rise to a second-order cylinder-to-helix transition., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

The mechanism by which a patterned state accommodates the breaking of translational symmetry by a phase boundary or a sample wall has been addressed in the context of Landau branching in type-I superconductors, refinement of magnetic domains, and compressed elastic sheets. We explore this issue by studying an ultrathin polymer sheet floating on the surface of a fluid, decorated with a pattern of parallel wrinkles. At the edge of the sheet, this corrugated profile meets the fluid meniscus. Rather than branching of wrinkles into generations of ever-smaller sharp folds, we discover a smooth cascade in which the coarse pattern in the bulk is matched to fine structure at the edge by the continuous introduction of discrete, higher wavenumber Fourier modes. The observed multiscale morphology is controlled by a dimensionless parameter that quantifies the relative strength of the edge forces and the rigidity of the bulk pattern., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

In this paper we show that two seemingly unrelated problems in economics, the hypothesis of integrability and the hypothesis of additive separability are linked by the absence of curvature of connections on webs naturally associated with each problem.

The controlled self-assembly of thiol stabilized gold nanocrystals in a mediating solvent and confined within mesoporous alumina was probed in situ with small angle x-ray scattering. The evolution of the self-assembly process was controlled reversibly via regulated changes in the amount of solvent condensed from an undersaturated vapor. Analysis indicated that the nanoparticles self-assembled into cylindrical monolayers within the porous template. Nanoparticle nearest-neighbor separation within the monolayer increased and the ordering decreased with the controlled addition of solvent. The process was reversible with the removal of solvent. Isotropic clusters of nanoparticles were also observed to form temporarily during desorption of the liquid solvent and disappeared upon complete removal of liquid. Measurements of the absorption and desorption of the solvent showed strong hysteresis upon thermal cycling. In addition, the capillary filling transition for the solvent in the nanoparticle-doped pores was shifted to larger chemical potential, relative to the liquid/vapor coexistence, by a factor of 4 as compared to the expected value for the same system without nanoparticles., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, appeared in Phys.
