Recent advancements in robotics, including applications like self-driving cars, unmanned systems, and medical robots, have had a significant impact on the job market. On one hand, big robotics companies offer training programs based on the job requirements. However, these training programs may not be as beneficial as general robotics programs offered by universities or community colleges. On the other hand, community colleges and universities face challenges with required resources, especially qualified instructors, to offer students advanced robotics education. Furthermore, the diverse backgrounds of undergraduate students present additional challenges. Some students bring extensive industry experiences, while others are newcomers to the field. To address these challenges, we propose a student-centered personalized learning framework for robotics. This framework allows a general instructor to teach undergraduate-level robotics courses by breaking down course topics into smaller components with well-defined topic dependencies, structured as a graph. This modular approach enables students to choose their learning path, catering to their unique preferences and pace. Moreover, our framework's flexibility allows for easy customization of teaching materials to meet the specific needs of host institutions. In addition to teaching materials, a frequently-asked-questions document would be prepared for a general instructor. If students' robotics questions cannot be answered by the instructor, the answers to these questions may be included in this document. For questions not covered in this document, we can gather and address them through collaboration with the robotics community and course content creators. CoNb$_2$O$_6$ is one of the few materials that is known to approximate the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model (1D-TFIM) near its quantum critical point. It has been inferred that Co$^{2+}$ acts as a pseudo-spin 1/2 with anisotropic exchange interactions that are largely Ising-like, enabling the realization of the TFIM. However, the behavior of CoNb$_2$O$_6$ is known to diverge from the ideal TFIM under transverse magnetic fields that are far from the quantum critical point, requiring the consideration of additional anisotropic, bond-dependent (Kitaev-like) terms in the microscopic pseudo-spin 1/2 Hamiltonian. These terms are expected to be controlled in part by single-ion physics, namely the wavefunction for the pseudo-spin 1/2 angular momentum doublet. Here, we present the results of both inelastic neutron scattering measurements and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy on CoNb$_2$O$_6$, which elucidate the single-ion physics of Co$^{2+}$ in CoNb$_2$O$_6$ for the first time. We find that the system is well-described by an intermediate spin-orbit coupled Hamiltonian, and the ground state is a well-isolated Kramers doublet with an anisotropic $g$-tensor. We provide the approximate wavefunctions for this doublet, which we expect will be useful in theoretical investigations of the anisotropic exchange interactions., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

We present a prognostic, one-equation model for eddy-mean flow interactions to parameterize the divergence of the Eliassen-Palm flux tensor (EPFT) that arises from thickness-weighted averaging (TWA) the hydrostatic Boussinesq equations. The TWA system of equations does not invoke approximations beyond those for which the hydrostatic Boussinesq equations are valid, constituting a mathematically consistent framework with clear physical interpretations. This model is intended for the adiabatic interior of zonally symmetric flows, in the absence of topographic features, where terms corresponding to eddy interfacial form drag in the EPFT dominate forces. We model eddy interfacial form drag terms for vertical flux of horizontal momentum using the gradient hypothesis, as the product of an eddy viscosity and the vertical gradient of horizontal momentum. We use mixing length theory to relate viscosity to an eddy length scale and an eddy velocity, which is proportional to the eddy energy in the TWA system. The eddy length scale is modeled as the first Rossby radius of deformation, which we calculate as a function of the mean flow. We use a prognostic equation for vertically integrated eddy energy at each horizontal location, which we derive from the TWA framework, and then simplify to the flows of interest by ignoring transport, redistribution and diabatic terms. The prognostic vertically integrated eddy energy is projected onto the water column using the eigenvalue of the first baroclinic mode to obtain the eddy energy at each vertical position. The eddy viscosity has horizontal as well as vertical structure. We diagnosed the model equations in an eddy resolving numerical simulation of a zonally re-entrant channel representative of the Southern Ocean. We have implemented the model parameterization in an ocean model and tested it to simulate a parameterized simulation of this flow.

Super Resolution is the problem of recovering a high-resolution image from a single or multiple low-resolution images of the same scene. It is an ill-posed problem since high frequency visual details of the scene are completely lost in low-resolution images. To overcome this, many machine learning approaches have been proposed aiming at training a model to recover the lost details in the new scenes. Such approaches include the recent successful effort in utilizing deep learning techniques to solve super resolution problem. As proven, data itself plays a significant role in the machine learning process especially deep learning approaches which are data hungry. Therefore, to solve the problem, the process of gathering data and its formation could be equally as vital as the machine learning technique used. Herein, we are proposing a new data acquisition technique for gathering real image data set which could be used as an input for super resolution, noise cancellation and quality enhancement techniques. We use a beam-splitter to capture the same scene by a low resolution camera and a high resolution camera. Since we also release the raw images, this large-scale dataset could be used for other tasks such as ISP generation. Unlike current small-scale dataset used for these tasks, our proposed dataset includes 11,421 pairs of low-resolution high-resolution images of diverse scenes. To our knowledge this is the most complete dataset for super resolution, ISP and image quality enhancement. The benchmarking result shows how the new dataset can be successfully used to significantly improve the quality of real-world image super resolution.

Knowledge Graphs are an emerging form of knowledge representation. While Google coined the term Knowledge Graph first and promoted it as a means to improve their search results, they are used in many applications today. In a knowledge graph, entities in the real world and/or a business domain (e.g., people, places, or events) are represented as nodes, which are connected by edges representing the relations between those entities. While companies such as Google, Microsoft, and Facebook have their own, non-public knowledge graphs, there is also a larger body of publicly available knowledge graphs, such as DBpedia or Wikidata. In a previous article a characteristic discontinuous Galerkin (CDG) advection scheme was presented for tracer transport. The scheme is conservative, unconditionally stable with respect to time step and scales sub-linearly with the number of tracers being advected. Here we present the implementation of the CDG advection scheme for tracer transport within MPAS-Ocean, a Boussinesque unstructured grid ocean model with an arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian vertical coordinate. The scheme is implemented in both the vertical and horizontal dimensions, and special care is taken to ensure that the scheme remains conservative in the context of moving vertical layers. Consistency is ensured with respect to the dynamics by a renormalization of the fluxes with respect to the volume fluxes derived from the continuity equation. For spherical implementations, the intersection of the flux swept regions and the Eulerian grid are determined for great circle arcs, and the fluxes and element assembly are performed on the plane via a length preserving projection. Solutions are presented for a suite of test cases and comparisons made to the existing flux corrected transport scheme in MPAS-Ocean.

We evaluate the Community ocean Vertical Mixing (CVMix) project version of the K-profile parameterization (KPP). For this purpose, one-dimensional KPP simulations are compared across a suite of oceanographically relevant regimes against large eddy simulations (LES). The LES is forced with horizontally uniform boundary fluxes and has horizontally uniform initial conditions, allowing its horizontal average to be compared to one-dimensional KPP tests. We find the standard configuration of KPP consistent with LES across many forcing regimes, supporting the physical basis of KPP. Our evaluation motivates recommendations for "best practices" for using KPP within ocean circulation models, and identifies areas where further research is warranted. Further, our test suite can be used as a baseline for evaluation of a broad suite of boundary layer models. The original treatment of KPP recommends the matching of interior diffusivities and their gradients to the KPP predicted values computed in the ocean surface boundary layer (OSBL). However, we find that difficulties in representing derivatives of rapidly changing diffusivities near the base of the OSBL can lead to loss of simulation fidelity. We propose two alternative approaches. We find the KPP entrainment buoyancy flux to be sensitive to vertical grid resolution and details of how to diagnose the KPP boundary layer depth. We modify the KPP turbulent shear velocity parameterization to reduce resolution dependence. Additionally, our results show that the KPP parameterized non-local tracer flux is incomplete due to the assumption that it solely redistributes the surface tracer flux. However, examination of the LES vertical turbulent scalar flux budgets show that non-local fluxes can exist in the absence of surface tracer fluxes. This result motivates further studies of the non-local flux parameterization.

We present a methodology to determine the best turbulence closure for an eddy-permitting ocean model through measurement of the error-landscape of the closure's subgrid spectral transfers and flux. We apply this method to 6 different closures for forced-dissipative simulations of the barotropic vorticity equation on a f-plane (2D Navier-Stokes equation). Using a high-resolution benchmark, we compare each closure's model of energy and enstrophy transfer to the actual transfer observed in the benchmark run. The error-landscape norms enable us to both make objective comparisons between the closures and to optimize each closure's free parameter for a fair comparison. The hyper-viscous closure most closely reproduces the enstrophy cascade, especially at larger scales due to the concentration of its dissipative effects to the very smallest scales. The viscous and Leith closures perform nearly as well, especially at smaller scales where all three models were dissipative. The Smagorinsky closure dissipates enstrophy at the wrong scales. The anticipated potential vorticity closure was the only model to reproduce the upscale transfer of kinetic energy from the unresolved scales, but would require high-order Laplacian corrections in order to concentrate dissipation at the smallest scales. The Lagrangian-averaged alpha-model closure did not perform successfully for forced 2D isotropic Navier-Stokes: small-scale filamentation is only slightly reduced by the model while small-scale roll-up is prevented. The long-term success of climate models that operate on multi-resolution grids will depend on access to subgrid parameterizations that act appropriately across a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. As the first step in a series of efforts to obtain such scale-aware subgrid parametrizations, in this article we focus on the anticipated potential vorticity method (APVM) on quasi-uniform grids with varying resolutions. By a scale analysis technique and the phenomenological theories for two-dimensional turbulent flows, we derive a new formulation of the APVM, which depends on a single parameter that is, in principle, invariant with respect to the time step size, the grid resolution and the flow itself. Results of numerical experiments with this new formulation demonstrate that the optimal parameter of the APVM is invariant with respect to the time step size, insensitive to the flows, and is only weakly dependent on the grid resolution., Comment: Manuscript submitted to Monthly Weather Review. The variational free-Lagrange (VFL) method for shallow water is a free-Lagrange method with the additional property that it preserves the variational structure of shallow water. The VFL method was first derived in this context by \cite{AUG84} who discretized Hamilton's action principle with a free-Lagrange data structure. The purpose of this article is to assess the long-time conservation properties of the VFL method for regularized shallow water which are useful for climate simulation. Long-time regularized shallow water simulations show that the VFL method exhibits no secular drift in the (i) energy error through the application of symplectic integrators; and (ii) the potential vorticity error through the construction of discrete curl, divergence and gradient operators which satisfy semi-discrete divergence and potential vorticity conservation laws. These diagnostic semi-discrete equations augment the description of the VFL method by characterizing the evolution of its respective irrotational and solenoidal components in the Lagrangian frame. Like the continuum equations, the former exhibits a $\text{div}^2\mathbf{U}$ term which indicates that the flow has a very strong tendency towards a purely rotational state. Numerical results show (i) the preservation of shape and strength of an initially radially symmetric vortex pair in purely rotational regularized shallow water and (ii) how the Voronoi diagram retains the history of the flow field and (iii) that energy is conserved to $\mathcal{O}(\Delta^2)$ and potential vorticity error to within 5% with no secular growth over a 50 year period., Comment: A 27 page extended version (with 10 figures) of a two-page article submitted to the ICIAM 07 proceedings

We prove that there exists a universal constant $r_3$ such that if $X$ is a smooth projective threefold over $\mathbb{C}$ with non-negative Kodaira dimension, then the linear system $|r K_X|$ admits a fibration that is birational to the Iitaka fibration as soon as $r \geq r_3$ and sufficiently divisible. This gives an affirmative answer to a conjecture of Hacon and McKernan in the case of threefolds. In this paper, we study the growth of the number of fixed points from iterating an endomorphism of an abelian variety. Using the estimates obtained on an abelian variety, we are able to extend the results to endomorphisms on varieties of Kodaira dimension zero and more generally their periodic subvarieties., Comment: 10 pages

We introduce calculus-based formulas for the continuous Euler and homotopy operators. The 1D continuous homotopy operator automates integration by parts on the jet space. Its 3D generalization allows one to invert the total divergence operator. As a practical application, we show how the operators can be used to symbolically compute local conservation laws of nonlinear systems of partial differential equations in multi-dimensions. By analogy to the continuous case, we also present concrete formulas for the discrete Euler and homotopy operators. Essentially, the discrete homotopy operator carries out summation by parts. We use it to algorithmically invert the forward difference operator. We apply the discrete operator to compute fluxes of differential-difference equations in (1+1) dimensions. Our calculus-based approach allows for a straightforward implementation of the operators in major computer algebra system, such as Mathematica and Maple. The symbolic algorithms for integration and summation by parts are illustrated with elementary examples. The algorithms to compute conservation laws are illustrated with nonlinear PDEs and their discretizations arising in fluid dynamics and mathematical physics.
