Highly coherent and powerful light sources capable of generating frequency combs in the soft x-ray domain are essential for advancing high precision measurements and conducting rigorous tests of fundamental physics. In this work, we derive the analytical conditions required for the emission of coherent radiation, including coherent frequency combs, from an electron beam colliding with a laser pulse, modeled as a plane wave. Using numerical simulations, we demonstrate that this scheme can produce a coherent soft x-ray frequency comb, provided the electron beam is sufficiently monoenergetic and electrons in the beam are regularly spaced. Furthermore, we highlight the advantageous role of employing few-cycle laser pulses in relaxing the stringent monoenergeticity requirements for coherent emission. The conditions derived here can also be used to optimize coherent emission from electron beam-laser interactions in other frequency ranges, such as the terahertz domain.

Attosecond pulses of coherent extreme ultraviolet (XUV) light are instrumental for studying sub-atomic dynamics, and are often produced from a free electron laser (FEL) by electron microbunches in an undulator. An optical-FEL (OFEL) utilizes a counter-propagating laser pulse instead of an undulator, and has been proposed as a more compact and tunable source than a FEL. Yet, an OFEL is difficult to realize because of the high electron density required and subsequent high emittance. We demonstrate that broadband coherent XUV light, which in the temporal domain corresponds to a train of attosecond pulses with 8-as duration at 92-as intervals, can be generated by microbunching of relativistic electrons and positrons in an optical laser pulse. The symmetry between electrons and positrons in the bunch stabilizes the system and enables the rapid formation of dense microbunches over a ten-micrometer distance instead of the tens of meters typically required in an undulator. The high microbunch density and the stable spectral phase up to emitted photon energies of about 350 eV, allow for the creation of orders of magnitude more compact sources of XUV light that could be employed in physics, chemistry, biology, and industry.

High-entropy materials shift the traditional materials discovery paradigm to one that leverages disorder, enabling access to unique chemistries unreachable through enthalpy alone. We present a self-consistent approach integrating computation and experiment to understand and explore single-phase rock salt high-entropy oxides. By leveraging a machine-learning interatomic potential, we rapidly and accurately map high-entropy composition space using our two descriptors: bond length distribution and mixing enthalpy. The single-phase stabilities for all experimentally stabilized rock salt compositions are correctly resolved, with dozens more compositions awaiting discovery.

In A/B testing two variants of a piece of software are compared in the field from an end user's point of view, enabling data-driven decision making. While widely used in practice, no comprehensive study has been conducted on the state-of-the-art in A/B testing. This paper reports the results of a systematic literature review that analyzed 141 primary studies. The results shows that the main targets of A/B testing are algorithms and visual elements. Single classic A/B tests are the dominating type of tests. Stakeholders have three main roles in the design of A/B tests: concept designer, experiment architect, and setup technician. The primary types of data collected during the execution of A/B tests are product/system data and user-centric data. The dominating use of the test results are feature selection, feature rollout, and continued feature development. Stakeholders have two main roles during A/B test execution: experiment coordinator and experiment assessor. The main reported open problems are enhancement of proposed approaches and their usability. Interesting lines for future research include: strengthen the adoption of statistical methods in A/B testing, improving the process of A/B testing, and enhancing the automation of A/B testing.

Current automated machine learning (ML) tools are model-centric, focusing on model selection and parameter optimization. However, the majority of the time in data analysis is devoted to data cleaning and wrangling, for which limited tools are available. Here we present DataAssist, an automated data preparation and cleaning platform that enhances dataset quality using ML-informed methods. We show that DataAssist provides a pipeline for exploratory data analysis and data cleaning, including generating visualization for user-selected variables, unifying data annotation, suggesting anomaly removal, and preprocessing data. The exported dataset can be readily integrated with other autoML tools or user-specified model for downstream analysis. Our data-centric tool is applicable to a variety of fields, including economics, business, and forecasting applications saving over 50% time of the time spent on data cleansing and preparation.

The trajectories of relativistic particles in an intense electromagnetic field can be described by the Landau-Lifshitz (LL) equation, where radiation reaction (RR) is accounted for via a self-force, and interparticle fields are often neglected as an approximation. Yet, the inclusion of interparticle fields is necessary to ensure energy-momentum conservation, in particular during coherent emission. We present a simple generalization of the LL equation for many bodies, which includes coherence effects in the self-force. This theory is shown both analytically and numerically to satisfy energy-momentum conservation as expected. By simulating a neutral, relativistic bunch of electrons and positrons ($e^-/e^+$) colliding with a laser pulse, we show that the inclusion of interparticle fields can significantly affect the particle dynamics and the emission spectrum, even though the external field dominates over the interparticle fields., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures

A/B testing is a common approach used in industry to facilitate innovation through the introduction of new features or the modification of existing software. Traditionally, A/B tests are conducted sequentially, with each experiment targeting the entire population of the corresponding application. This approach can be time-consuming and costly, particularly when the experiments are not relevant to the entire population. To tackle these problems, we introduce a new self-adaptive approach called AutoPABS, short for Automated Pipelines of A/B tests using Self-adaptation, that (1) automates the execution of pipelines of A/B tests, and (2) supports a split of the population in the pipeline to divide the population into multiple A/B tests according to user-based criteria, leveraging machine learning. We started the evaluation with a small survey to probe the appraisal of the notation and infrastructure of AutoPABS. Then we performed a series of tests to measure the gains obtained by applying a population split in an automated A/B testing pipeline, using an extension of the SEAByTE artifact. The survey results show that the participants express the usefulness of automating A/B testing pipelines and population split. The tests show that automatically executing pipelines of A/B tests with a population split accelerates the identification of statistically significant results of the parallel executed experiments of A/B tests compared to a traditional approach that performs the experiments sequentially.

Modern software systems often have to cope with uncertain operation conditions, such as changing workloads or fluctuating interference in a wireless network. To ensure that these systems meet their goals these uncertainties have to be mitigated. One approach to realize this is self-adaptation that equips a system with a feedback loop. The feedback loop implements four core functions -- monitor, analyze, plan, and execute -- that share knowledge in the form of runtime models. For systems with a large number of adaptation options, i.e., large adaptation spaces, deciding which option to select for adaptation may be time consuming or even infeasible within the available time window to make an adaptation decision. This is particularly the case when rigorous analysis techniques are used to select adaptation options, such as formal verification at runtime, which is widely adopted. One technique to deal with the analysis of a large number of adaptation options is reducing the adaptation space using machine learning. State of the art has showed the effectiveness of this technique, yet, a systematic solution that is able to handle different types of goals is lacking. In this paper, we present ML2ASR+, short for Machine Learning to Adaptation Space Reduction Plus. Central to ML2ASR+ is a configurable machine learning pipeline that supports effective analysis of large adaptation spaces for threshold, optimization, and setpoint goals. We evaluate ML2ASR+ for two applications with different sizes of adaptation spaces: an Internet-of-Things application and a service-based system. The results demonstrate that ML2ASR+ can be applied to deal with different types of goals and is able to reduce the adaptation space and hence the time to make adaptation decisions with over 90%, with negligible effect on the realization of the adaptation goals.

Highly polarized, multi-kiloampere-current electron bunches from compact laser-plasma accelerators are desired for numerous applications. Current proposals to produce these beams suffer from intrinsic limitations to the reproducibility, charge, beam shape and final polarization degree. In this Letter, we propose colliding pulse injection as a technique for the generation of highly polarized electron bunches from pre-polarized plasma sources. Using particle-in-cell simulations, we show that colliding pulse injection enables trapping and precise control over electron spin evolution, resulting in the generation of high-current (multi-kA) electron bunches with high degrees of polarization (up to 95 % for > 2 kA). Bayesian optimization is employed to optimize the multidimensional parameter space associated with colliding pulse injection to obtain percent-level energy spread, sub-micron normalized emittance electron bunches with 90 % polarization using 100-TW class laser systems., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Employing colliding-pulse injection has been shown to enable high-quality electron beams to be generated from laser-plasma accelerators. Here by leveraging test particle simulations, Hamiltonian analysis, and multidimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations, we lay the theoretical framework of spin-polarized electron beam generation in the colliding-pulse injection scheme. In the past two decades, artificial structures known as metamaterials have been found to exhibit extraordinary material properties that enable the unprecedented manipulation of electromagnetic waves, elastic waves, molecules, and particles. Phenomena such as negative refraction, bandgaps, near perfect wave absorption, wave focusing, negative Poissons ratio, negative thermal conductivity, etc., all are possible with these materials. Metamaterials were originally theorized and fabricated in electrodynamics, but research into their applications has expanded into acoustics, thermodynamics, seismology, classical mechanics, and mass transport. In this Research Update we summarize the history, current state of progress, and emerging directions of metamaterials by field, focusing the unifying principles at the foundation of each discipline. We discuss the different designs and mechanisms behind metamaterials as well as the governing equations and effective material parameters for each field. Also, current and potential applications for metamaterials are discussed. Artifacts support evaluating new research results and help comparing them with the state of the art in a field of interest. Over the past years, several artifacts have been introduced to support research in the field of self-adaptive systems. While these artifacts have shown their value, it is not clear to what extent these artifacts support research on problems in self-adaptation that are relevant to industry. This paper provides a set of guidelines for artifacts that aim at supporting industry-relevant research on self-adaptation. The guidelines that are grounded on data obtained from a survey with practitioners were derived during working sessions at the 17th International Symposium on Software Engineering for Adaptive and Self-Managing Systems. Artifact providers can use the guidelines for aligning future artifacts with industry needs; they can also be used to evaluate the industrial relevance of existing artifacts. Many software systems today face uncertain operating conditions, such as sudden changes in the availability of resources or unexpected user behavior. Without proper mitigation these uncertainties can jeopardize the system goals. Self-adaptation is a common approach to tackle such uncertainties. When the system goals may be compromised, the self-adaptive system has to select the best adaptation option to reconfigure by analyzing the possible adaptation options, i.e., the adaptation space. Yet, analyzing large adaptation spaces using rigorous methods can be resource- and time-consuming, or even be infeasible. One approach to tackle this problem is by using online machine learning to reduce adaptation spaces. However, existing approaches require domain expertise to perform feature engineering to define the learner, and support online adaptation space reduction only for specific goals. To tackle these limitations, we present 'Deep Learning for Adaptation Space Reduction Plus' -- DLASeR+ in short. DLASeR+ offers an extendable learning framework for online adaptation space reduction that does not require feature engineering, while supporting three common types of adaptation goals: threshold, optimization, and set-point goals. We evaluate DLASeR+ on two instances of an Internet-of-Things application with increasing sizes of adaptation spaces for different combinations of adaptation goals. We compare DLASeR+ with a baseline that applies exhaustive analysis and two state-of-the-art approaches for adaptation space reduction that rely on learning. Results show that DLASeR+ is effective with a negligible effect on the realization of the adaptation goals compared to an exhaustive analysis approach, and supports three common types of adaptation goals beyond the state-of-the-art approaches., Comment: 41 pages

Micro-services are a common architectural approach to software development today. An indispensable tool for evolving micro-service systems is A/B testing. In A/B testing, two variants, A and B, are applied in an experimental setting. By measuring the outcome of an evaluation criterion, developers can make evidence-based decisions to guide the evolution of their software. Recent studies highlight the need for enhancing the automation when such experiments are conducted in iterations. To that end, we contribute a novel artifact that aims at enhancing the automation of an experimentation pipeline of a micro-service system relying on the principles of self-adaptation. Concretely, we propose SEAByTE, an experimental framework for testing novel self-adaptation solutions to enhance the automation of continuous A/B testing of a micro-service based system. In this paper, we present an unsupervised learning approach to identify the user points of interest (POI) by exploiting WiFi measurements from smartphone application data. Due to the lack of GPS positioning accuracy in indoor, sheltered, and high rise building environments, we rely on widely available WiFi access points (AP) in contemporary urban areas to accurately identify POI and mobility patterns, by comparing the similarity in the WiFi measurements. We propose a system architecture to scan the surrounding WiFi AP, and perform unsupervised learning to demonstrate that it is possible to identify three major insights, namely the indoor POI within a building, neighbourhood activity, and micro-mobility of the users. Recently, we have been witnessing an increasing use of machine learning methods in self-adaptive systems. Machine learning methods offer a variety of use cases for supporting self-adaptation, e.g., to keep runtime models up to date, reduce large adaptation spaces, or update adaptation rules. Yet, since machine learning methods apply in essence statistical methods, they may have an impact on the decisions made by a self-adaptive system. Given the wide use of formal approaches to provide guarantees for the decisions made by self-adaptive systems, it is important to investigate the impact of applying machine learning methods when such approaches are used. In this paper, we study one particular instance that combines linear regression to reduce the adaptation space of a self-adaptive system with statistical model checking to analyze the resulting adaptation options. We use computational learning theory to determine a theoretical bound on the impact of the machine learning method on the predictions made by the verifier. We illustrate and evaluate the theoretical result using a scenario of the DeltaIoT artifact. To conclude, we look at opportunities for future research in this area.

With the increasing ubiquity and scale of self-adaptive systems, there is a growing need to decentralize the functionality that realizes self-adaptation. Our focus is on architecture-based self-adaptive systems where one or more functions for monitoring, analyzing, planning, and executing are realized by multiple components that coordinate with one another. While some earlier studies have shed light on existing work on the decentralization of self-adaptive systems, there is currently no clear overview of the state of the art in decentralization of self-adaptive systems. Yet, having a precise view on the state of the art in decentralized self-adaptive systems is crucial for researchers to understand existing solutions and drive future research efforts. To address this gap, we conducted a mapping study. The study focused on papers published at 24 important venues that publish research on self-adaptation. The study focused on the motivations for choosing a decentralized approach to realize self-adaptation, the adaptation functions that are decentralized, the realization of the coordination, and the open challenges in the area.

Recently, we witness a rapid increase in the use of machine learning in self-adaptive systems. Machine learning has been used for a variety of reasons, ranging from learning a model of the environment of a system during operation to filtering large sets of possible configurations before analysing them. While a body of work on the use of machine learning in self-adaptive systems exists, there is currently no systematic overview of this area. Such overview is important for researchers to understand the state of the art and direct future research efforts. This paper reports the results of a systematic literature review that aims at providing such an overview. We focus on self-adaptive systems that are based on a traditional Monitor-Analyze-Plan-Execute feedback loop (MAPE). The research questions are centred on the problems that motivate the use of machine learning in self-adaptive systems, the key engineering aspects of learning in self-adaptation, and open challenges. The search resulted in 6709 papers, of which 109 were retained for data collection. Analysis of the collected data shows that machine learning is mostly used for updating adaptation rules and policies to improve system qualities, and managing resources to better balance qualities and resources. These problems are primarily solved using supervised and interactive learning with classification, regression and reinforcement learning as the dominant methods. Surprisingly, unsupervised learning that naturally fits automation is only applied in a small number of studies. Key open challenges in this area include the performance of learning, managing the effects of learning, and dealing with more complex types of goals. From the insights derived from this systematic literature review we outline an initial design process for applying machine learning in self-adaptive systems that are based on MAPE feedback loops.

Understanding the nutritional content of food from visual data is a challenging computer vision problem, with the potential to have a positive and widespread impact on public health. Studies in this area are limited to existing datasets in the field that lack sufficient diversity or labels required for training models with nutritional understanding capability. We introduce Nutrition5k, a novel dataset of 5k diverse, real world food dishes with corresponding video streams, depth images, component weights, and high accuracy nutritional content annotation. We demonstrate the potential of this dataset by training a computer vision algorithm capable of predicting the caloric and macronutrient values of a complex, real world dish at an accuracy that outperforms professional nutritionists. Further we present a baseline for incorporating depth sensor data to improve nutrition predictions. Analyser-Based Phase-Contrast imaging (ABPCI) is a phase-contrast imaging method that produces high contrast images of weakly absorbing materials. However, it is only sensitive to phase variations lying in the diffraction plane of the analyser crystal (i.e in one dimension; 1-D), as it is highly sensitive to phase variations lying in the diffraction plane of the analyser crystal. In order to accurately account for and measure phase effects produced by the wavefield-sample interaction, ABPCI and other 1-D phase sensitive methods must achieve 2-D phase sensitivity. We applied an inclined geometry method to a Laue geometry setup for X-ray ABPCI through rotation of the detector and object about the optical axis. This allowed this traditionally 1-D phase sensitive phase contrast method to possess 2-D phase sensitivity. We acquired tomographic datasets over 360 degrees of a multi-material phantom with the detector and sample tilted by 8 degrees. The real and imaginary parts of the refractive index were reconstructed for the phantom.

This white paper highlights compact object and fundamental physics science opportunities afforded by high-throughput broadband (0.1-60 keV) X-ray polarization observations. X-ray polarimetry gives new observables with geometric information about stellar remnants which are many orders of magnitude too small for direct imaging. The X-ray polarimetric data also reveal details about the emission mechanisms and the structure of the magnetic fields in and around the most extreme objects in the Universe. Whereas the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) to be launched in 2021 will obtain first results for bright objects, a follow-up mission could be one order of magnitude more sensitive and would be able to use a broader bandpass to perform physics type experiments for representative samples of sources., Comment: White Paper submitted to the Astro2020 Astronomy and Astrophysics Decadal Survey organized by the Board of Physics and Astronomy and the Space Studies Board of the National Academies

We present the discovery of an optical transient (OT) in Messier 51, designated M51 OT2019-1 (also ZTF19aadyppr, AT 2019abn, ATLAS19bzl), by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF). The OT rose over 15 days to an observed luminosity of $M_r=-13$ (${\nu}L_{\nu}=9\times10^6~L_{\odot}$), in the luminosity gap between novae and typical supernovae (SNe). Spectra during the outburst show a red continuum, Balmer emission with a velocity width of $\approx400$ km s$^{-1}$, Ca II and [Ca II] emission, and absorption features characteristic of an F-type supergiant. The spectra and multiband light curves are similar to the so-called "SN impostors" and intermediate-luminosity red transients (ILRTs). We directly identify the likely progenitor in archival Spitzer Space Telescope imaging with a $4.5~\mu$m luminosity of $M_{[4.5]}\approx-12.2$ and a $[3.6]-[4.5]$ color redder than 0.74 mag, similar to those of the prototype ILRTs SN 2008S and NGC 300 OT2008-1. Intensive monitoring of M51 with Spitzer further reveals evidence for variability of the progenitor candidate at [4.5] in the years before the OT. The progenitor is not detected in pre-outburst Hubble Space Telescope optical and near-IR images. The optical colors during outburst combined with spectroscopic temperature constraints imply a higher reddening of $E(B-V)\approx0.7$ mag and higher intrinsic luminosity of $M_r\approx-14.9$ (${\nu}L_{\nu}=5.3\times10^7~L_{\odot}$) near peak than seen in previous ILRT candidates. Moreover, the extinction estimate is higher on the rise than on the plateau, suggestive of an extended phase of circumstellar dust destruction. These results, enabled by the early discovery of M51 OT2019-1 and extensive pre-outburst archival coverage, offer new clues about the debated origins of ILRTs and may challenge the hypothesis that they arise from the electron-capture induced collapse of extreme asymptotic giant branch stars., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures, published in ApJL

Fetal brain imaging is a cornerstone of prenatal screening and early diagnosis of congenital anomalies. Knowledge of fetal gestational age is the key to the accurate assessment of brain development. This study develops an attention-based deep learning model to predict gestational age of the fetal brain. The proposed model is an end-to-end framework that combines key insights from multi-view MRI including axial, coronal, and sagittal views. The model also uses age-activated weakly-supervised attention maps to enable rotation-invariant localization of the fetal brain among background noise. We evaluate our methods on the collected fetal brain MRI cohort with a large age distribution from 125 to 273 days. We present an experimental and theoretical study of the electronic band structure of ReS2 and ReSe2 at high hydrostatic pressures. The experiments are performed by photoreflectance spectroscopy and are analyzed in terms of ab initio calculations within the density functional theory. Experimental pressure coefficients for the two most dominant excitonic transitions are obtained and compared with those predicted by the calculations. We assign the transitions to the Z k-point of the Brillouin zone and other k-points located away from highsymmetry points. The origin of the pressure coefficients of the measured direct transitions is discussed in terms of orbital analysis of the electronic structure and van der Waals interlayer interaction. The anisotropic optical properties are studied at high pressure by means of polarization-resolved photoreflectance measurements.

Comprehensive and quantitative investigations of social theories and phenomena increasingly benefit from the vast breadth of data describing human social relations, which is now available within the realm of computational social science. Such data are, however, typically proxies for one of the many interaction layers composing social networks, which can be defined in many ways and are typically composed of communication of various types (e.g., phone calls, face-to-face communication, etc.). As a result, many studies focus on one single layer, corresponding to the data at hand. Several studies have, however, shown that these layers are not interchangeable, despite the presence of a certain level of correlations between them. Here, we investigate whether different layers of interactions among individuals lead to similar conclusions with respect to the presence of homophily patterns in a population---homophily represents one of the widest studied phenomenon in social networks. To this aim, we consider a dataset describing interactions and links of various nature in a population of Asian students with diverse nationalities, first language and gender. We study homophily patterns, as well as their temporal evolutions in each layer of the social network. To facilitate our analysis, we put forward a general method to assess whether the homophily patterns observed in one layer inform us about patterns in another layer. For instance, our study reveals that three network layers---cell phone communications, questionnaires about friendship, and trust relations---lead to similar and consistent results despite some minor discrepancies. The homophily patterns of the co-presence network layer, however, does not yield any meaningful information about other network layers.

This work reports on the experimental investigation of the wide band gap compounds LiMgZ (Z = P, As, Sb), which are promising candidates for opto-electronics and anode materials for Lithium batteries. The compounds crystallize in the cubic (C1_b) MgAgAs structure (space group F-43m). The polycrystalline samples were synthesized by solid state reaction methods. X-ray and neutron diffraction measurements show a homogeneous, single-phased samples. The electronic properties were studied using the direct current (DC) method. Additionally UV-VIS diffuse reflectance spectra were recorded in order to investigate the band gap nature. The measurements show that all compounds exhibit semiconducting behavior with direct band gaps of 1.0 eV to 2.3 eV depending on the Z element. A decrease of the peak widths in the static 7Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra with increasing temperature was observed, which can directly be related to an increase of Li ion mobility., Comment: 8 pages

We identify a prominent absorption feature at 1115 GHz, detected in first HIFI spectra towards high-mass star-forming regions, and interpret its astrophysical origin. The characteristic hyperfine pattern of the H2O+ ground-state rotational transition, and the lack of other known low-energy transitions in this frequency range, identifies the feature as H2O+ absorption against the dust continuum background and allows us to derive the velocity profile of the absorbing gas. By comparing this velocity profile with velocity profiles of other tracers in the DR21 star-forming region, we constrain the frequency of the transition and the conditions for its formation. In DR21, the velocity distribution of H2O+ matches that of the [CII] line at 158\mu\m and of OH cm-wave absorption, both stemming from the hot and dense clump surfaces facing the HII-region and dynamically affected by the blister outflow. Diffuse foreground gas dominates the absorption towards Sgr B2. The integrated intensity of the absorption line allows us to derive lower limits to the H2O+ column density of 7.2e12 cm^-2 in NGC 6334, 2.3e13 cm^-2 in DR21, and 1.1e15 cm^-2 in Sgr B2., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A
