Search

Over a hundred gravitational-wave signals have now been detected from the mergers of black holes and neutron stars, but other sources of gravitational waves have not yet been discovered. Some of the most violent explosive events in the Universe are predicted to emit bursts of gravitational waves, and may result in the next big multi-messenger discovery. Gravitational-wave burst signals often have an unknown waveform shape, and unknown gravitational-wave energy, due to unknown or very complicated progenitor astrophysics. Potential sources of gravitational-wave bursts include core-collapse supernovae, cosmic strings, fast radio bursts, eccentric binary systems, and gravitational-wave memory. In this review, we discuss the astrophysical properties of the main predicted sources of gravitational-wave bursts, and the known features of their gravitational-wave emission. We summarise their future detection prospects, and discuss the challenges of searching for gravitational-wave burst signals and interpreting the astrophysics of the source.

Supernova theory has struggled to explain the lightest known neutron star candidate with an accurate mass determination, the $1.174\mathrm{M}_\odot$ companion in the eccentric compact binary system J0453+1559. To improve the theoretical lower limit for neutron star birth masses, we perform 3D supernova simulations for five stellar models close to the minimum mass for iron core collapse. We obtain a record-low neutron star mass of $1.192\mathrm{M}_\odot$ and a substantial kick of $\mathord{\sim} 100\,\mathrm{km}\,\mathrm{s}^{-1}$. Given residual uncertainties in stellar evolution, a neutron star origin for the $1.174\mathrm{M}_\odot$ object remains plausible., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. Submitted to Physical Review Letters

Gravitational waveform predictions from 3D simulations of explosions of non-rotating massive stars with no magnetic fields have been extensively studied. However, the impact of magnetic fields and rotation on the core-collapse supernova gravitational-wave signal is not well understood beyond the core-bounce phase. Therefore, we perform four magnetohydrodynamical simulations of the explosion of a $15\,M_{\odot}$ star with the SFHx and SFHo equations of state. All of the models start with a weak magnetic field strength of $10^{8}$\,G, and two of the models are rapidly rotating. We discuss the impact of the rotation and magnetic fields on the gravitational-wave signals. We find that the weak pre-collapse fields do not have a significant impact on the gravitational-wave signal amplitude. With rapid rotation, the f/g-mode trajectory can change in shape, and the dominant emission band becomes broader. We include the low-frequency memory component of the gravitational-wave signal from both matter motions and neutrino emission anisotropy. We show that including the gravitational waves from anisotropic neutrino emission increases the supernova detection distances for the Einstein Telescope, and would also be detectable out to Mpc distances by a moon-based gravitational-wave detector.

Core-collapse supernova (CCSN) explosions powered by rotation and magnetic fields present an interesting astrophysical site for nucleosynthesis that potentially contributes to the production of $r$-process elements. Here we present yields of the innermost ejecta in 3D magnetorotational CCSN models simulated using the CoCoNuT-FMT code. Strong magnetic fields tap the rotational energy of the proto-neutron star and lead to earlier and more energetic ($\sim 3\times 10^{51}$ erg) explosions than typical neutrino-driven CCSNe. Compared to a reference non-magnetic model, the ejecta in the magnetorotational models have much more neutron-rich components with Ye down to $\sim$0.25. Our post-processing calculations with the reaction network SkyNet show significant production of weak $r$-process elements up to mass number $\sim$130. We find negligible differences in the synthesis of heavy elements between two magnetorotational models with different initial field strength of 10$^{10}$ and 10$^{12}$ G, in accord with their similar explosion dynamics. The magnetorotational models produce about $\sim$0.19 and 0.14 Msun of radioactive $^{56}$Ni, on the low end of inferred hypernova nickel masses. Gravitational waves are emitted from deep within a core-collapse supernova, which may enable us to determine the mechanism of the explosion from a gravitational-wave detection. Previous studies suggested that it is possible to determine if the explosion mechanism is neutrino-driven or magneto-rotationally powered from the gravitational-wave signal. However, long duration magneto-rotational waveforms, that cover the full explosion phase, were not available during the time of previous studies, and explosions were just assumed to be magneto-rotationally driven if the model was rapidly rotating. Therefore, we perform an updated study using new 3D long-duration magneto-rotational core-collapse supernova waveforms that cover the full explosion phase, injected into noise for the Advanced LIGO, Einstein Telescope and NEMO gravitational-wave detectors. We also include a category for failed explosions in our signal classification results. We then determine the explosion mechanism of the signals using three different methods: Bayesian model selection, dictionary learning, and convolutional neural networks. The three different methods are able to distinguish between neutrino-driven explosions and magneto-rotational explosions, even if the neutrino-driven explosion model is rapidly rotating. We present the results from a search for gravitational-wave transients associated with core-collapse supernovae observed optically within 30 Mpc during the third observing run of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo. No gravitational wave associated with a core-collapse supernova has been identified. We then report the detection efficiency for a variety of possible gravitational-wave emissions. For neutrino-driven explosions, the distance at which we reach 50% detection efficiency is up to 8.9 kpc, while more energetic magnetorotationally-driven explosions are detectable at larger distances. The distance reaches for selected models of the black hole formation, and quantum chromodynamics phase transition are also provided. We then constrain the core-collapse supernova engine across a wide frequency range from 50 Hz to 2 kHz. The upper limits on gravitational-wave energy and luminosity emission are at low frequencies down to $10^{-4}\,M_\odot c^2$ and $6 \times 10^{-4}\,M_\odot c^2$/s, respectively. The upper limits on the proto-neutron star ellipticity are down to 3 at high frequencies. Finally, by combining the results obtained with the data from the first and second observing runs of LIGO and Virgo, we improve the constraints of the parameter spaces of the extreme emission models. The global network of gravitational-wave observatories now includes five detectors, namely LIGO Hanford, LIGO Livingston, Virgo, KAGRA, and GEO 600. These detectors collected data during their third observing run, O3, composed of three phases: O3a starting in April of 2019 and lasting six months, O3b starting in November of 2019 and lasting five months, and O3GK starting in April of 2020 and lasting 2 weeks. In this paper we describe these data and various other science products that can be freely accessed through the Gravitational Wave Open Science Center at https://gwosc.org. Using relativistic supernova simulations of massive progenitor stars with a quark-hadron equation of state (EoS) and a purely hadronic EoS, we identify a distinctive feature in the gravitational-wave signal that originates from a buoyancy-driven mode (g-mode) below the proto-neutron star convection zone. The mode frequency lies in the range $200\lesssim f\lesssim 800\,\text{Hz}$ and decreases with time. As the mode lives in the core of the proto-neutron star, its frequency and power are highly sensitive to the EoS, in particular the sound speed around twice saturation density., Comment: Accepted Phys. We perform three-dimensional simulations of magnetorotational supernovae using a $39\,M_{\odot}$ progenitor star with two different initial magnetic field strengths of $10^{10}$ G and $10^{12}$ G in the core. Both models rapidly undergo shock revival and their explosion energies asymptote within a few hundred milliseconds to values of $\gtrsim 2\times10^{51}$ erg after conservatively correcting for the binding energy of the envelope. Magnetically collimated, non-relativistic jets form in both models, though the jets are subject to non-axisymmetric instabilities. The jets do not appear crucial for driving the explosion, as they only emerge once the shock has already expanded considerably. Our simulations predict moderate neutron star kicks of about $150\, \mathrm{km}\,\mathrm{s}^{-1}$, no spin-kick alignment, and rapid early spin-down that would result in birth periods of about $20\, \mathrm{ms}$, too slow to power an energetic gamma-ray burst jet. More than $0.2\,M_\odot$ of iron-group material are ejected, but we estimate that the mass of ejected $^{56}\mathrm{Ni}$ will be considerably smaller as the bulk of this material is neutron-rich. Explosive burning does not contribute appreciable amounts of $^{56}\mathrm{Ni}$ because the burned material originates from the slightly neutron-rich silicon shell. The iron-group ejecta also show no pronounced bipolar geometry by the end of the simulations. The models thus do not immediately fit the characteristics of observed hypernovae, but may be representative of other transients with moderately high explosion energies. The gravitational-wave emission reaches high frequencies of up to 2000 Hz and amplitudes of over 100 cm. The gravitational-wave emission is detectable out to distances of $\sim4$ Mpc in the planned Cosmic Explorer detector.

Transient noise glitches in gravitational-wave detector data limit the sensitivity of searches and contaminate detected signals. In this Paper, we show how glitches can be simulated using generative adversarial networks. We produce hundreds of synthetic images for the 22 most common types of glitches seen in the LIGO, KAGRA, and Virgo detectors. The artificial glitches can be used to improve the performance of searches and parameter-estimation algorithms. We perform a neural network classification to show that our artificial glitches are an excellent match for real glitches, with an average classification accuracy across all 22 glitch types of 99.0%.

Nearby core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) are powerful multi-messenger sources for gravitational-wave, neutrino and electromagnetic telescopes as they emit gravitational waves in the ideal frequency band for ground based detectors. Once a CCSN gravitational-wave signal is detected, we will need to determine the parameters of the signal, and understand how those parameters relate to the source's explosion, progenitor and remnant properties. This is a challenge due to the stochastic nature of CCSN explosions, which is imprinted on their time series gravitational waveforms. In this paper, we perform Bayesian parameter estimation of CCSN signals using an asymmetric chirplet signal model to represent the dominant high-frequency mode observed in spectrograms of CCSN gravitational-wave signals. We use design sensitivity Advanced LIGO noise and CCSN waveforms from four different hydrodynamical supernova simulations with a range of different progenitor stars. We determine how well our model can reconstruct time-frequency images of the emission modes, and show how well we can determine parameters of the signal such as the frequency, amplitude, and duration. We show how the parameters of our signal model may allow us to place constraints on the proto-neutron star mass and radius, the turbulent kinetic energy onto the proto-neutron star, and the time of shock revival.

We investigate the impact of rotation and magnetic fields on the dynamics and gravitational wave emission in 2D core-collapse supernova simulations with neutrino transport. We simulate 17 different models of $15\,M_\odot$ and $39\,M_\odot$ progenitor stars with various initial rotation profiles and initial magnetic fields strengths up to $10^{12}\, \mathrm{G}$, assuming a dipolar field geometry in the progenitor. Strong magnetic fields generally prove conducive to shock revival, though this trend is not without exceptions. The impact of rotation on the post-bounce dynamics is more variegated, in line with previous studies. A significant impact on the time-frequency structure of the gravitational wave signal is found only for rapid rotation or strong initial fields. For rapid rotation, the angular momentum gradient at the proto-neutron star surface can appreciably affect the frequency of the dominant mode, so that known analytic relations for the high-frequency emission band no longer hold. In case of two magnetorotational explosion models, the deviation from these analytic relations is even more pronounced. One of the magnetorotational explosions has been evolved to more than half a second after the onset of the explosion and shows a subsidence of high-frequency emission at late times. Its most conspicuous gravitational wave signature is a high-amplitude tail signal. We also estimate the maximum detection distances for our waveforms. We performed a detailed analysis of the detectability of a wide range of gravitational waves derived from core-collapse supernova simulations using gravitational-wave detector noise scaled to the sensitivity of the upcoming fourth and fifth observing runs of the Advanced LIGO, Advanced Virgo, and KAGRA. We use the coherent WaveBurst algorithm, which was used in the previous observing runs to search for gravitational waves from core-collapse supernovae. As coherent WaveBurst makes minimal assumptions on the morphology of a gravitational-wave signal, it can play an important role in the first detection of gravitational waves from an event in the Milky Way. We predict that signals from neutrino-driven explosions could be detected up to an average distance of 10 kpc, and distances of over 100 kpc can be reached for explosions of rapidly rotating progenitor stars. An estimated minimum signal-to-noise ratio of 10-25 is needed for the signals to be detected. We quantify the accuracy of the waveforms reconstructed with coherent WaveBurst and we determine that the most challenging signals to reconstruct are those produced in long-duration neutrino-driven explosions and models that form black holes a few seconds after the core bounce., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables

We present 3D core-collapse supernova simulations of massive Pop-III progenitor stars at the transition to the pulsational pair instability regime. We simulate two progenitor models with initial masses of $85\,\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ and $100\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$ with the LS220, SFHo, and SFHx equations of state. The $85\,\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ progenitor experiences a pair instability pulse coincident with core collapse, whereas the $100\,\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ progenitor has already gone through a sequence of four pulses $1\mathord,500$ years before collapse in which it ejected its H and He envelope. The $85\,\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ models experience shock revival and then delayed collapse to a black hole (BH) due to ongoing accretion within hundreds of milliseconds. The diagnostic energy of the incipient explosion reaches up to $2.7\times10^{51}\,\mathrm{erg}$ in the SFHx model. Due to the high binding energy of the metal core, BH collapse by fallback is eventually unavoidable, but partial mass ejection may be possible. The $100\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$ models have not achieved shock revival or undergone BH collapse by the end of the simulation. All models exhibit relatively strong gravitational-wave emission both in the high-frequency g-mode emission band and at low frequencies. The SFHx and SFHo models show clear emission from the standing accretion shock instability. For our models, we estimate maximum detection distances of up to $\mathord{\sim}46\,\mathrm{kpc}$ with LIGO and $\mathord{\sim} 850\,\mathrm{kpc}$ with Cosmic Explorer.

This paper presents the SPIIR pipeline used for public alerts during the third advanced LIGO and Virgo observation run (O3 run). The SPIIR pipeline uses infinite impulse response (IIR) filters to perform extremely low-latency matched filtering and this process is further accelerated with graphics processing units (GPUs). It is the first online pipeline to select candidates from multiple detectors using a coherent statistic based on the maximum network likelihood ratio statistic principle. Here we simplify the derivation of this statistic using the singular-value-decomposition (SVD) technique and show that single-detector signal-to-noise ratios from matched filtering can be directly used to construct the statistic for each sky direction. Coherent searches are in general more computationally challenging than coincidence searches due to extra search over sky direction parameters. The search over sky directions follows an embarrassing parallelization paradigm and has been accelerated using GPUs. The detection performance is reported using a segment of public data from LIGO-Virgo's second observation run. We demonstrate that the median latency of the SPIIR pipeline is less than 9 seconds, and present an achievable roadmap to reduce the latency to less than 5 seconds. During the O3 online run, SPIIR registered triggers associated with 38 of the 56 non-retracted public alerts. The extreme low-latency nature makes it a competitive choice for joint time-domain observations, and offers the tantalizing possibility of making public alerts prior to the merger phase of binary coalescence systems involving at least one neutron star., Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures

Machine learning has emerged as a popular and powerful approach for solving problems in astrophysics. We review applications of machine learning techniques for the analysis of ground-based gravitational-wave detector data. Examples include techniques for improving the sensitivity of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo gravitational-wave searches, methods for fast measurements of the astrophysical parameters of gravitational-wave sources, and algorithms for reduction and characterization of non-astrophysical detector noise. These applications demonstrate how machine learning techniques may be harnessed to enhance the science that is possible with current and future gravitational-wave detectors.

We present three-dimensional simulations of the core-collapse of massive rotating and non-rotating progenitors performed with the general relativistic neutrino hydrodynamics code CoCoNuT-FMT and analyse their explosion properties and gravitational-wave signals. The progenitor models include Wolf-Rayet stars with initial helium star masses of $39\,M_{\odot}$ and $20\,M_{\odot}$, and an $18\,M_{\odot}$ red supergiant. The $39\,M_{\odot}$ model is a rapid rotator, whereas the two other progenitors are non-rotating. Both Wolf-Rayet models produce healthy neutrino-driven explosions, whereas the red supergiant model fails to explode. By the end of the simulations, the explosion energies have already reached $1.1\times 10^{51}\,\mathrm{erg}$ and $0.6\times 10^{51}\,\mathrm{erg}$ for the $39\,M_{\odot}$ and $20\,M_{\odot}$ model, respectively. The explosions produce neutron stars of relatively high mass, but with modest kicks. Due to the alignment of the bipolar explosion geometry with the rotation axis, there is a relatively small misalignment of $30^\circ$ between the spin and the kick in the $39\,M_{\odot}$ model. In terms of gravitational-wave signals, the massive and rapidly rotating $39\,M_{\odot}$ progenitor stands out by large gravitational-wave amplitudes that would make it detectable out to almost 2 Mpc by the Einstein Telescope. For this model, we find that rotation significantly changes the dependence of the characteristic gravitational-wave frequency of the f-mode on the proto-neutron star parameters compared to the non-rotating case. The other two progenitors have considerably smaller detection distances, despite significant low-frequency emission in the most sensitive frequency band of current gravitational-wave detectors due to the standing accretion shock instability in the $18\,M_{\odot}$ model.

We describe a search and classification procedure for gravitational waves emitted by core-collapse supernova (CCSN) explosions, using a convolutional neural network (CNN) combined with an event trigger generator known as Wavelet Detection Filter (WDF). We employ both a 1-D CNN search using time series gravitational-wave data as input, and a 2-D CNN search with time-frequency representation of the data as input. To test the accuracies of our 1-D and 2-D CNN classification, we add CCSN waveforms from the most recent hydrodynamical simulations of neutrino-driven core-collapse to simulated Gaussian colored noise with the Virgo interferometer and the planned Einstein Telescope sensitivity curve. We find classification accuracies, for a single detector, of over 95% for both 1-D and 2-D CNN pipelines. For the first time in machine learning CCSN studies, we add short duration detector noise transients to our data to test the robustness of our method against false alarms created by detector noise artifacts. The mass and spin distributions of compact binary gravitational-wave sources are currently uncertain due to complicated astrophysics involved in their formation. Multiple sub-populations of compact binaries representing different evolutionary scenarios may be present among sources detected by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo. In addition to hierarchical modelling, unmodelled methods can aid in determining the number of sub-populations and their properties. In this paper, we apply Gaussian mixture model clustering to 1000 simulated gravitational-wave compact binary sources from a mixture of five sub-populations. Using both mass and spin as input parameters, we determine how many binary detections are needed to accurately determine the number of sub-populations and their mass and spin distributions. In the most difficult case that we consider, where two sub-populations have identical mass distributions but differ in their spin, which is poorly constrained by gravitational-wave detections, we find that ~ 400 detections are needed before we can identify the correct number of sub-populations.

A population of binary black hole mergers has now been observed in gravitational waves by Advanced LIGO and Virgo. The masses of these black holes appear to show evidence for a pile-up between $30$--$45$ $M_\odot$ and a cut-off above $\sim 45$ $M_\odot$. One possible explanation for such a pile-up and subsequent cut-off are pulsational pair-instability supernovae (PPISNe) and pair-instability supernovae (PISNe) in massive stars. We investigate the plausibility of this explanation in the context of isolated massive binaries. We study a population of massive binaries using the rapid population synthesis software COMPAS, incorporating models for PPISNe and PISNe. Our models predict a maximum black hole mass of $40$ $M_\odot$. We expect $\sim 10$\% of all binary black hole mergers at redshift z = 0 will include at least one component that went through a PPISN (with mass $30$--$40$ $M_\odot$), constituting $\sim 20$--$50$\% of binary black hole mergers observed during the first two observing runs of Advanced LIGO and Virgo. Empirical models based on fitting the gravitational-wave mass measurements to a combination of a power law and a Gaussian find a fraction too large to be associated with PPISNe in our models. The rates of PPISNe and PISNe track the low metallicity star formation rate, increasing out to redshift $z = 2$. The next generation of gravitational wave detectors will improve the detection prospects for gravitational waves from core-collapse supernovae. The complex astrophysics involved in core-collapse supernovae pose a significant challenge to modeling such phenomena. The Supernova Model Evidence Extractor (SMEE) attempts to capture the main features of gravitational wave signals from core-collapse supernovae by using numerical relativity waveforms to create approximate models. These models can then be used to perform Bayesian model selection to determine if the targeted astrophysical feature is present in the gravitational wave signal. In this paper, we extend SMEE's model selection capabilities to include features in the gravitational wave signal that are associated with g-modes and the standing accretion shock instability. For the first time, we test SMEE's performance using simulated data for planned future detectors, such as the Einstein Telescope, Cosmic Explorer, and LIGO Voyager. Further to this, we show how the performance of SMEE is improved by creating models from the spectrograms of supernova waveforms instead of their timeseries waveforms that contain stochastic features. In third generation detector configurations, we find that about 50% of neutrino-driven simulations were detectable at 100 kpc, and 10% at 275 kpc. The explosion mechanism was correctly determined for all detected signals.

Core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) are a potential source for ground-based gravitational wave detectors, as their predicted emission peaks in the detectors' frequency band. Typical searches for gravitational wave bursts reconstruct signals using wavelets. However, as CCSN signals contain multiple complex features in the time-frequency domain, these techniques often struggle to reconstruct the entire signal. An alternative method developed in recent years involves applying principal component analysis (PCA) to a set of simulated CCSN models. This technique enables model selection between astrophysical CCSN models as well as waveform reconstruction. However, PCA faces its own difficulties, such as being unable to reconstruct signals longer than the simulations; many CCSN simulations are stopped before the emission peaks due to insufficient computational resources. In this study, we show how combining PCA with dynamic time warping (DTW) improves the reconstruction of CCSN gravitational wave signals in Gaussian noise characteristic of Advanced LIGO at design sensitivity. For the waveforms used in this analysis, we find that the number of PCs needed to represent 90% of the data is reduced from nine to four by applying DTW, and that the match between the original and reconstructed waveforms improves for signal-to-noise ratios in the range [0,50].

Understanding gravitational wave emission from core-collapse supernovae will be essential for their detection with current and future gravitational wave detectors. This requires a sample of waveforms from modern 3D supernova simulations reaching well into the explosion phase, where gravitational wave emission is expected to peak. However, recent waveforms from 3D simulations with multi-group neutrino transport do not reach far into the explosion phase, and some are still obtained from non-exploding models. We therefore calculate waveforms up to 0.9\,s after bounce using the neutrino hydrodynamics code \textsc{CoCoNuT-FMT}. We consider two models with low and normal explosion energy, namely explosions of an ultra-stripped progenitor with an initial helium star mass of $3.5\,M_{\odot}$, and of an $18\,M_{\odot}$ single star. Both models show gravitational wave emission from the excitation of surface g-modes in the proto-neutron star with frequencies between $\mathord{\sim}800\,\mathrm{Hz}$ and 1000\,Hz at peak emission. The peak amplitudes are about $6\, \mathrm{cm}$ and $10\, \mathrm{cm}$, respectively, which is somewhat higher than in most recent 3D models of the pre-explosion or early explosion phase. Using a Bayesian analysis, we determine the maximum detection distances for our models in simulated Advanced LIGO, Advanced Virgo, and Einstein Telescope design sensitivity noise. The more energetic $18 M_\odot$ explosion will be detectable to about $17.5 \,\mathrm{kpc}$ by the LIGO/Virgo network and to about $180\, \mathrm{kpc}$ with the Einstein Telescope.

Bayesian parameter estimation is fast becoming the language of gravitational-wave astronomy. It is the method by which gravitational-wave data is used to infer the sources' astrophysical properties. We introduce a user-friendly Bayesian inference library for gravitational-wave astronomy, Bilby. This python code provides expert-level parameter estimation infrastructure with straightforward syntax and tools that facilitate use by beginners. It allows users to perform accurate and reliable gravitational-wave parameter estimation on both real, freely-available data from LIGO/Virgo, and simulated data. We provide a suite of examples for the analysis of compact binary mergers and other types of signal model including supernovae and the remnants of binary neutron star mergers. These examples illustrate how to change the signal model, how to implement new likelihood functions, and how to add new detectors. Bilby has additional functionality to do population studies using hierarchical Bayesian modelling. The number of astrophysical sources detected by Advanced LIGO and Virgo is expected to increase as the detectors approach their design sensitivity. Gravitational wave detectors are also sensitive to transient noise sources created by the environment and the detector, known as `glitches'. As the rate of astrophysical sources increases, the probability that a signal will occur at the same time as a glitch also increases. This has occurred previously in the gravitational wave binary neutron star detection GW170817. In the case of GW170817, the glitch in the Livingston detector was easy to identify, and much shorter than the total duration of the signal, making it possible for the glitch to be removed. In this paper, we examine the effect of glitches on the measurement of signal parameters and Bayes factors used for model selection for much more difficult cases, where it may not be possible to determine that the glitch is present or to remove it. We include binary black holes similar to current detections, sine Gaussian bursts, and core-collapse supernovae. We find that the worst effects occur when the glitch is coincident with the signal maximum, and the signal to noise ratio (SNR) of the glitch is larger than the signal SNR. We have shown that for accurate parameter estimation of future gravitational wave signals it will be essential to develop further methods to either remove or reduce the effect of the glitches.

A detection of a core-collapse supernova signal with an Advanced LIGO and Virgo gravitational-wave detector network will allow us to measure astrophysical parameters of the source. In real advanced gravitational-wave detector data there are transient noise artifacts that may mimic a true gravitational-wave signal. In this paper, we outline a procedure implemented in the Supernova Model Evidence Extractor (SMEE) that determines if a core-collapse supernova signal candidate is a noise artefact, a rapidly-rotating core-collapse supernova signal, or a neutrino explosion mechanism core-collapse supernova signal. Further to this, we use the latest available three-dimensional gravitational-wave core-collapse supernova simulations, and we outline a new procedure for the rejection of background noise transients when only one detector is operational. We find the minimum SNR needed to detect all waveforms is reduced when using three-dimensional waveforms as signal models.

A detection of a core-collapse supernova (CCSN) gravitational-wave (GW) signal with an Advanced LIGO and Virgo detector network may allow us to measure astrophysical parameters of the dying massive star. GWs are emitted from deep inside the core and, as such, they are direct probes of the CCSN explosion mechanism. In this study we show how we can determine the CCSN explosion mechanism from a GW supernova detection using a combination of principal component analysis and Bayesian model selection. We use simulations of GW signals from CCSN exploding via neutrino-driven convection and rapidly-rotating core collapse. Previous studies have shown that the explosion mechanism can be determined using one LIGO detector and simulated Gaussian noise. As real GW detector noise is both non-stationary and non-Gaussian we use real detector noise from a network of detectors with a sensitivity altered to match the advanced detectors design sensitivity. For the first time we carry out a careful selection of the number of principal components to enhance our model selection capabilities. We show that with an advanced detector network we can determine if the CCSN explosion mechanism is neutrino-driven convection for sources in our Galaxy and rapidly-rotating core collapse for sources out to the Large Magellanic Cloud.

The data taken by the advanced LIGO and Virgo gravitational-wave detectors contains short duration noise transients that limit the significance of astrophysical detections and reduce the duty cycle of the instruments. As the advanced detectors are reaching sensitivity levels that allow for multiple detections of astrophysical gravitational-wave sources it is crucial to achieve a fast and accurate characterization of non-astrophysical transient noise shortly after it occurs in the detectors. Previously we presented three methods for the classification of transient noise sources. They are Principal Component Analysis for Transients (PCAT), Principal Component LALInference Burst (PC-LIB) and Wavelet Detection Filter with Machine Learning (WDF-ML). In this study we carry out the first performance tests of these algorithms on gravitational-wave data from the Advanced LIGO detectors. We use the data taken between the 3rd of June 2015 and the 14th of June 2015 during the 7th engineering run (ER7), and outline the improvements made to increase the performance and lower the latency of the algorithms on real data. This work provides an important test for understanding the performance of these methods on real, non stationary data in preparation for the second advanced gravitational-wave detector observation run, planned for later this year. We show that all methods can classify transients in non stationary data with a high level of accuracy and show the benefits of using multiple classifiers.

Noise of non-astrophysical origin will contaminate science data taken by the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (aLIGO) and Advanced Virgo gravitational-wave detectors. Prompt characterization of instrumental and environmental noise transients will be critical for improving the sensitivity of the advanced detectors in the upcoming science runs. During the science runs of the initial gravitational-wave detectors, noise transients were manually classified by visually examining the time-frequency scan of each event. Here, we present three new algorithms designed for the automatic classification of noise transients in advanced detectors. Two of these algorithms are based on Principal Component Analysis. They are Principal Component Analysis for Transients (PCAT), and an adaptation of LALInference Burst (LIB). The third algorithm is a combination of an event generator called Wavelet Detection Filter (WDF) and machine learning techniques for classification. We test these algorithms on simulated data sets, and we show their ability to automatically classify transients by frequency, SNR and waveform morphology.
