In this paper, we address the development of a robotic rehabilitation system for the upper limbs based on collaborative end-effector solutions. The use of commercial collaborative robots offers significant advantages for this task, as they are optimized from an engineering perspective and ensure safe physical interaction with humans. However, they also come with noticeable drawbacks, such as the limited range of sizes available on the market and the standard control modes, which are primarily oriented towards industrial or service applications. To address these limitations, we propose an optimization-based design method to fully exploit the capability of the cobot in performing rehabilitation tasks. Additionally, we introduce a novel control architecture based on an admittance-type Virtual Fixture method, which constrains the motion of the robot along a prescribed path. This approach allows for an intuitive definition of the task to be performed via Programming by Demonstration and enables the system to operate both passively and actively. In passive mode, the system supports the patient during task execution with additional force, while in active mode, it opposes the motion with a braking force. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method., Comment: 11 pages, 15 Figures, submitted to Journal

The D theory is a $\mathcal{N}=2$ conformal SYM theory in four dimensions with gauge group SU($N$), four matter hypermultiplets in the fundamental and two in the anti-symmetric representation, and a flavor symmetry that contains a U(4) factor. Its holographic dual is obtained via a combination of orbifold and orientifold projections from Type II B string theory on $\mathrm{AdS}_5 \times S^5$ and possesses a sector of open strings attached to D7 branes with U(4) Chan-Paton factors. The AdS Veneziano amplitude of the U(4) gluons is dual to four-point correlators of moment-map operators of the U(4) flavor symmetry in the D theory. An integrated version of these correlators is captured by a deformation of the D theory in which the fundamental hypermultiplets acquire a mass. The partition function of this massive theory can be evaluated with matrix-model techniques using localization. In this paper we analyze the matrix model of the mass-deformed D theory arising from localization using the so-called ``full Lie algebra'' approach in a $1/N$ expansion. In particular, we study the partition function and its mass derivatives up to $O(1/N^2)$ corrections obtaining exact expressions that are valid for all values of the 't Hooft coupling. We also analyze their behavior at strong coupling where our results produce useful constraints on the dual open string scattering amplitudes in AdS., Comment: 31 pages

We consider the $4d$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal quiver gauge theory obtained by a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifold of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills (SYM). By exploiting supersymmetric localization, we study the integrated correlator of two Coulomb branch and two moment map operators and the integrated correlator of four moment map operators, determining exact expressions valid for any value of the 't Hooft coupling in the planar limit. Additionally, for the second correlator, we obtain an exact expression also for the next-to-planar contribution. Then, we derive the leading terms of their strong-coupling expansions and outline the differences with respect to the $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory.

Structurally anisotropic materials are ubiquitous in several application fields, yet their accurate optical characterization remains challenging due to the lack of general models linking their scattering coefficients to the macroscopic transport observables, and the need to combine multiple measurements to retrieve their direction-dependent values. Here, we present an improved method for the experimental determination of light transport tensor coefficients from the diffusive rates measured along all three directions, based on transient transmittance measurements and a generalized Monte Carlo model. We apply our method to the characterization of light transport properties in two common anisotropic materials - polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) tape and paper - highlighting the magnitude of systematic deviations that are typically incurred when neglecting anisotropy.

Anisotropic light transport is extremely common among scattering materials, yet a comprehensive picture of how macroscopic diffusion is determined by microscopic tensor scattering coefficients is not fully established yet. In this work, we present a theoretical and experimental study of diffusion in structurally anisotropic media with uniaxially symmetric scattering coefficients. Exact analytical relations are derived in the case of index-matched turbid media, unveiling the general relation between microscopic scattering coefficients and the resulting macroscopic diffusion tensor along different directions. Excellent agreement is found against anisotropic Monte Carlo simulations up to high degrees of anisotropy, in contrast with previously proposed approaches. The obtained solutions are used to analyze experimental measurements of anisotropic light transport in polystyrene foam samples under different degrees of uniaxial compression, providing a practical example of their applicability.

Coupling a system to two different baths can lead to novel phenomena escaping the constraints of thermal equilibrium. In quantum materials inside optical cavities, this feature can be exploited as electrons and cavity-photons are easily pulled away from their mutual equilibrium, even in the steady state. This offers new routes for a non-invasive control of material properties and functionalities. We show that the absence of thermal equilibrium between electrons and photons leads to reduced symmetries of the steady-state electronic distribution function. Moreover, by defining an effective temperature from the on-shell distribution function, we find a non-monotonic behaviour as a function of cavity frequency, consistent with recent experimental findings. Finally, we show that, the non-thermal behaviour leads to qualitative modifications of the material's properties, as the standard Sommerfeld expansion for observables is modified by a leading-order correction linearly proportional to the temperature difference between the two baths and to the frequency-derivative of the electron damping.

We provide a comprehensive theoretical study of the radio-frequency (rf) spectra of a two-component Fermi gas with balanced populations in the normal region of the temperature-vs-coupling phase diagram. In particular, rf spectra are analyzed in terms of two characteristic peaks, which can be either distinct or overlapping. On the BEC side of the crossover, these two contributions are associated with a fermionic quasi-particle peak and a bosonic-like contribution due to pairing. On the BCS side of the crossover, the two peaks are instead associated with interactions between particles occurring, respectively, at high or low relative momenta. Through this two-peak analysis, we show how and to what extent the correlation between the widths of the rf spectra and the pair size, previously identified in the superfluid phase at low temperature, can be extended to the normal phase, as well as how the temperature-vs-coupling phase diagram of the BCS-BEC crossover can be partitioned in a number of distinct physical sectors. Several analytic results for the shape and widths of the rf spectra are also derived in appropriate temperature and coupling limits., Comment: 23 pages, 16 figures

We consider 4-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 2$ superconformal quiver theories with $SU(N)^M$ gauge group and bi-fundamental matter and we evaluate correlation functions of $n$ coincident Wilson loops in the planar limit of the theory. Exploiting specific untwisted/twisted combinations of these operators and using supersymmetric localization, we are able to resum the whole perturbative expansion and find exact expressions for these correlators that are valid for all values of the 't Hooft coupling. Moreover, we analytically derive the leading strong coupling behaviour of the correlators, showing that they obey a remarkable simple rule. Our analysis is complemented by numerical checks based on a Pad\'e resummation of the perturbative series.

Low-carbon dispatchable power underpins a sustainable energy system, providing load balancing complementing wide-scale deployment of intermittent renewable power. In this new context, fossil fuel-fired power plants must be coupled with a post-combustion carbon capture (PCC) process capable of highly transient operation. To tackle design and operational challenges simultaneously, we have developed a computational framework that integrates process design with techno-economic assessment. The backbone of this is a high-fidelity PCC mathematical model of a pressure-vacuum swing adsorption process. We demonstrate that the cost-optimal design has limited process flexibility, challenging reactiveness to disturbances, such as those in the flue gas feed conditions. The results illustrate that flexibility can be introduced by relaxing the CO$_2$ recovery constraint on the operation, albeit at the expense of the capture efficiency of the process. We discover that adsorption-based processes can accommodate for significant flexibility and improved performance with respect to the operational constraints on CO$_2$ recovery and purity. The results herein demonstrate a trade-off between process economics and process operability, which must be effectively rationalised to integrate CO$_2$ capture units in the design of low-carbon energy systems., Comment: Pre-print paper currently under review. 32 pages, 6 figures. Pini and Vantini (2017) introduced the interval-wise testing procedure which performs local inference for functional data defined on an interval domain, where the output is an adjusted p-value function that controls for type I errors. We extend this idea to a general setting where domain is a Riemannian manifolds. This requires new methodology such as how to define adjustment sets on product manifolds and how to approximate the test statistic when the domain has non-zero curvature. We propose to use permutation tests for inference and apply the procedure in three settings: a simulation on a "chameleon-shaped" manifold and two applications related to climate change where the manifolds are a complex subset of $S^2$ and $S^2 \times S^1$, respectively. We note the tradeoff between type I and type II errors: increasing the adjustment set reduces the type I error but also results in smaller areas of significance. However, some areas still remain significant even at maximal adjustment.

Transport processes underpin a multitude of phenomena, ranging from the propagation of atoms on lattices, to the mobility patterns of microorganisms and earthquakes, to name a few. The dynamics of these processes is very rich and key to understanding the complex nature of the underlying physics, but the way in which we classify them is often too simplistic to fully reflect this complexity. Here, we report on the experimental observation of a breakdown of self-similar propagation for light inside a scattering medium - a transport regime exhibiting different scaling rates for each spatial moment of the associated probability distribution. Notably, we show that this phenomenon arises for light waves even in the simple case of isotropic and homogeneous disorder, and can be controlled by tuning the turbidity of the system. These results support the idea that the traditional dichotomy between normal and anomalous diffusion is reductive and that a richer framework should be constructed based on the concept of self-similarity as this class of transport regimes may be far more common that it is currently believed. In addition, this insight can help understand scenarios where transport is dominated by rare propagation events, as in non-linear and active media, or more generally in other fields of research.

We consider the problem of mixed linear regression (MLR), where each observed sample belongs to one of $K$ unknown linear models. In practical applications, the proportions of the $K$ components are often imbalanced. Unfortunately, most MLR methods do not perform well in such settings. Motivated by this practical challenge, in this work we propose Mix-IRLS, a novel, simple and fast algorithm for MLR with excellent performance on both balanced and imbalanced mixtures. In contrast to popular approaches that recover the $K$ models simultaneously, Mix-IRLS does it sequentially using tools from robust regression. Empirically, Mix-IRLS succeeds in a broad range of settings where other methods fail. These include imbalanced mixtures, small sample sizes, presence of outliers, and an unknown number of models $K$. In addition, Mix-IRLS outperforms competing methods on several real-world datasets, in some cases by a large margin. We complement our empirical results by deriving a recovery guarantee for Mix-IRLS, which highlights its advantage on imbalanced mixtures.

Physics - Physics and Society - Abstract
With increasing concerns over climate change, scientists must imperatively acknowledge their share in CO2 emissions. Considering the large emissions associated with scientific traveling - especially international conferences - initiatives to mitigate such impact are blooming. With the COVID-19 pandemic shattering our notion of private/professional interactions, the moment should be seized to reinvent science conferences and collaborations with a model respectful of the environment. Yet, despite efforts to reduce the footprint of conferences, there is a lack of a robust approach based on reliable numbers (emissions, carbon offsetting/removals, etc.) to accompany this shift of paradigm. Here, considering a representative scientific society, the International Adsorption Society, we report on a case study of the problem: making conferences carbon neutral while respecting the needs of scientists. We first provide a quantitative analysis of the CO2 emissions for the IAS conference in 2022 related to accommodation, catering, flights, etc. Second, we conduct two surveys probing our community view on the carbon footprint of our activities. These surveys mirror each other, and were distributed two years before and in the aftermath of our triennial conference (also corresponding to pre/post COVID times). By combining the different parts, we propose ambitious recommendations to shape the future of conferences.

The evolution of an attractive polarized two-component Fermi gas at zero temperature is analyzed as its polarization is progressively decreased, from full polarization (corresponding to the polaronic limit) down to a critical polarization when superfluidity sets in. This critical polarization and the nature of the associated superfluid instability are determined within a fully self-consistent $t$-matrix approach implemented exactly at zero temperature. In this way, the polarization-vs-coupling phase diagram at zero temperature is constructed throughout the whole BCS-BEC crossover. Depending on the coupling strength of the inter-particle interaction between the two components, the superfluid instability can be either toward a Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase or toward a standard polarized BCS phase. The evolution with polarization of the quasi-particle parameters in the normal Fermi gas turns out to be notably different in the two cases. When the instability is toward a polarized BCS superfluid, quasi-particles in the proximity of the two Fermi surfaces remain well defined for all polarizations. When the instability is instead toward an FFLO superfluid, precursor effects become apparent upon approaching the FFLO quantum critical point (QCP), where the quasi-particle residues vanish and the effective masses diverge. This behavior leads to a complete breakdown of the quasi-particle picture characteristic of a Fermi liquid, similarly to what occurs in heavy-fermion materials at an antiferromagnetic QCP. At unitarity, the system is further investigated at finite temperature, making it possible to identify a non-Fermi liquid region in the temperature-vs-polarization phase diagram associated with the underlying FFLO QCP., Comment: 24 pages, 10 figures; modified Fig. 5 and text discussing it, added Appendix A7 and Fig. 10, added References, other minor corrections

We study the 3-point functions of gauge-invariant scalar operators in four dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal quiver theories using supersymmetric localization in the planar limit of a large number of colors. By exploiting a web of nontrivial relations, we show that the 3-point functions can be expressed in terms of the 2-point functions through exact Ward-like identities that are valid for all values of the coupling constant. In this way, using recent results about the 2-point functions, we are able to obtain the asymptotic strong-coupling expansion of the 3-point functions and of the corresponding structure constants in the planar limit. Our results extend to sub-leading orders what has been recently found at leading order, where a precise match with calculations within the AdS/CFT correspondence at the supergravity level is possible. Therefore, our findings can be interpreted also as a prediction for the sub-leading string corrections to these holographic calculations., Comment: 25 pages, 2 figures, a few references added

The goal of autonomous vehicles is to navigate public roads safely and comfortably. To enforce safety, traditional planning approaches rely on handcrafted rules to generate trajectories. Machine learning-based systems, on the other hand, scale with data and are able to learn more complex behaviors. However, they often ignore that agents and self-driving vehicle trajectory distributions can be leveraged to improve safety. In this paper, we propose modeling a distribution over multiple future trajectories for both the self-driving vehicle and other road agents, using a unified neural network architecture for prediction and planning. During inference, we select the planning trajectory that minimizes a cost taking into account safety and the predicted probabilities. Our approach does not depend on any rule-based planners for trajectory generation or optimization, improves with more training data and is simple to implement. We extensively evaluate our method through a realistic simulator and show that the predicted trajectory distribution corresponds to different driving profiles. We also successfully deploy it on a self-driving vehicle on urban public roads, confirming that it drives safely without compromising comfort. The imitation learning of self-driving vehicle policies through behavioral cloning is often carried out in an open-loop fashion, ignoring the effect of actions to future states. Training such policies purely with Empirical Risk Minimization (ERM) can be detrimental to real-world performance, as it biases policy networks towards matching only open-loop behavior, showing poor results when evaluated in closed-loop. In this work, we develop an efficient and simple-to-implement principle called Closed-loop Weighted Empirical Risk Minimization (CW-ERM), in which a closed-loop evaluation procedure is first used to identify training data samples that are important for practical driving performance and then we these samples to help debias the policy network. We evaluate CW-ERM in a challenging urban driving dataset and show that this procedure yields a significant reduction in collisions as well as other non-differentiable closed-loop metrics., Comment: v2: minor update in dataset and results (no changes in improvements or conclusions)

Knowing the exact 3D location of workers and robots in a collaborative environment enables several real applications, such as the detection of unsafe situations or the study of mutual interactions for statistical and social purposes. In this paper, we propose a non-invasive and light-invariant framework based on depth devices and deep neural networks to estimate the 3D pose of robots from an external camera. The method can be applied to any robot without requiring hardware access to the internal states. We introduce a novel representation of the predicted pose, namely Semi-Perspective Decoupled Heatmaps (SPDH), to accurately compute 3D joint locations in world coordinates adapting efficient deep networks designed for the 2D Human Pose Estimation. The proposed approach, which takes as input a depth representation based on XYZ coordinates, can be trained on synthetic depth data and applied to real-world settings without the need for domain adaptation techniques. To this end, we present the SimBa dataset, based on both synthetic and real depth images, and use it for the experimental evaluation. Within the framework of Gaussian graphical models, a prior distribution for the underlying graph is introduced to induce a block structure in the adjacency matrix of the graph and learning relationships between fixed groups of variables. A novel sampling strategy named Double Reversible Jumps Markov chain Monte Carlo is developed for block structural learning, under the conjugate G-Wishart prior. The algorithm proposes moves that add or remove not just a single link but an entire group of edges. The method is then applied to smooth functional data. The classical smoothing procedure is improved by placing a graphical model on the basis expansion coefficients, providing an estimate of their conditional independence structure. Since the elements of a B-Spline basis have compact support, the independence structure is reflected on well-defined portions of the domain. A known partition of the functional domain is exploited to investigate relationships among the substances within the compound.

The dependence of the velocity of surface acoustic wave (SAW) as a function of an external applied magnetic field is investigated in a Fe thin film epitaxially grown on a piezoelectric GaAs substrate. The SAW velocity is observed to strongly depend on both the amplitude and direction of the magnetic field. To interpret the experimental data a phenomenological approach to the relative change in SAW velocity is implemented. We find that the experimental velocity variation can be well reproduced provided that the spin wave dispersion is taken into account. The validity of this phenomenological model is attested by the comparison with a quasi-exact magnetoelastic one.

The inductive matrix completion (IMC) problem is to recover a low rank matrix from few observed entries while incorporating prior knowledge about its row and column subspaces. In this work, we make three contributions to the IMC problem: (i) we prove that under suitable conditions, the IMC optimization landscape has no bad local minima; (ii) we derive a simple scheme with theoretical guarantees to estimate the rank of the unknown matrix; and (iii) we propose GNIMC, a simple Gauss-Newton based method to solve the IMC problem, analyze its runtime and derive recovery guarantees for it. The guarantees for GNIMC are sharper in several aspects than those available for other methods, including a quadratic convergence rate, fewer required observed entries and stability to errors or deviations from low-rank. Empirically, given entries observed uniformly at random, GNIMC recovers the underlying matrix substantially faster than several competing methods.

We investigate the phase diagram of a fluid of hard-core disks confined to the surface of a sphere and whose interaction potential contains a short-range attraction followed by a long-range repulsive tail (SALR). Based on previous works in the bulk we derive a stability criterion for the homogeneous phase of the fluid, and locate a region of instability linked to the presence of a negative minimum in the spherical harmonics expansion of the interaction potential. The inhomogeneous phases contained within this region are characterized using a mean-field density functional theory. We find several inhomogeneous patterns that can be separated into three broad classes: cluster crystals, stripes, and bubble crystals, each containing topological defects. Interestingly, while the periodicity of inhomogeneous phases at large densities is mainly determined by the position of the negative minimum of the potential expansion, the finite size of the system induces a richer behavior at smaller densities.

The parameterised post-Newtonian (PPN) formalism is a weak-field slow-motion approximation for both GR and some of its generalisations. It permits various parameterisations of the motion, among which are the Lagrange-type and Gauss-type orbital equations. Often, these equations are developed under the Lagrange constraint, which makes the evolving orbital elements parameterise instantaneous conics tangent to the orbit. Arbitrary mathematically, this choice of a constraint is convenient under perturbations dependent only on positions. Under perturbations dependent also on velocities (like relativistic corrections) the Lagrange constraint unnecessarily complicates solutions that can be simplified by introducing a freedom in the orbit parameterisation, which is analogous to the gauge freedom in electrodynamics and gauge theories. Geometrically, this freedom is the freedom of nonosculation, i.e. of the degree to which the instantaneous conics are permitted to be non-tangent to the actual orbit. Under the same perturbation, all solutions with different degree of nonosculation look mathematically different, though describe the same physical orbit. While non-intuitive, the modeling of an orbit with a sequence of nontangent instantaneous conics can at times simplify calculations. The appropriately generalised ("gauge-generalised") Lagrange-type equations, and their applications, appeared in the literature hitherto. We in this paper derive the gauge-generalised Gauss-type equations and apply them to the PPN two-body problem. Fixing the gauge freedom in three different ways (i.e. modeling an orbit with non-osculating elements of three different types) we find three parameterisations of the PPN two-body dynamics. These parameterisations render orbits with either a fixed non-osculating semimajor axis, or a fixed non-osculating eccentricity, or a fixed non-osculating argument of periastron.

Recently, learning frameworks have shown the capability of inferring the accurate shape, pose, and texture of an object from a single RGB image. However, current methods are trained on image collections of a single category in order to exploit specific priors, and they often make use of category-specific 3D templates. In this paper, we present an alternative approach that infers the textured mesh of objects combining a series of deformable 3D models and a set of instance-specific deformation, pose, and texture. Differently from previous works, our method is trained with images of multiple object categories using only foreground masks and rough camera poses as supervision. Without specific 3D templates, the framework learns category-level models which are deformed to recover the 3D shape of the depicted object. The instance-specific deformations are predicted independently for each vertex of the learned 3D mesh, enabling the dynamic subdivision of the mesh during the training process. Experiments show that the proposed framework can distinguish between different object categories and learn category-specific shape priors in an unsupervised manner. Predicted shapes are smooth and can leverage from multiple steps of subdivision during the training process, obtaining comparable or state-of-the-art results on two public datasets. Models and code are publicly released., Comment: Accepted at 3DV 2021

We consider $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal quiver gauge theories in four dimensions and evaluate the chiral/anti-chiral correlators of single-trace operators. We show that it is convenient to form particular twisted and untwisted combinations of these operators suggested by the dual holographic description of the theory. The various twisted sectors are orthogonal and the correlators in each sector have always the same structure, as we show at the lowest orders in perturbation theory with Feynman diagrams. Using localization we then map the computation to a matrix model. In this way we are able to obtain formal expressions for the twisted correlators in the planar limit that are valid for all values of the 't Hooft coupling $\lambda$, and find that they are proportional to $1/\lambda$ at strong coupling. We successfully test the correctness of our extrapolation against a direct numerical evaluation of the matrix model and argue that the $1/\lambda$ behavior qualitatively agrees with the holographic description., Comment: 45 pages, 9 figures

Low rank matrix recovery problems, including matrix completion and matrix sensing, appear in a broad range of applications. In this work we present GNMR -- an extremely simple iterative algorithm for low rank matrix recovery, based on a Gauss-Newton linearization. On the theoretical front, we derive recovery guarantees for GNMR in both the matrix sensing and matrix completion settings. Some of these results improve upon the best currently known for other methods. A key property of GNMR is that it implicitly keeps the factor matrices approximately balanced throughout its iterations. On the empirical front, we show that for matrix completion with uniform sampling, GNMR performs better than several popular methods, especially when given very few observations close to the information limit.

Repulsive soft-core atomic systems may undergo clustering if their density is high enough that core overlap is unavoidable. In one-dimensional quantum systems, it has been shown that this instability triggers a transition from a Luttinger liquid to various cluster Luttinger liquids. Here, we focus on the Luttinger liquid regime and theoretically study the evolution of key observables related to density fluctuations, that manifest a striking dependence on density. We tune the interaction so that the low-density regime corresponds to a Tonks-Girardeau gas, and show that as the density is increased the system departs more and more from Tonks-Girardeau behavior, displaying a much larger compressibility as well as rotonic excitations that finally drive the clustering transition. We compare various theoretical approaches, which are accurate in different regimes. Using quantum Monte Carlo methods and analytic continuation as a benchmark, we investigate the regime of validity of the mean-field Bogoliubov and the real-time multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree-Fock approaches. Part of the behavior that we describe should be observable in ultracold Rydberg-dressed gases, provided that system losses are prevented., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

Gesture recognition is a fundamental tool to enable novel interaction paradigms in a variety of application scenarios like Mixed Reality environments, touchless public kiosks, entertainment systems, and more. Recognition of hand gestures can be nowadays performed directly from the stream of hand skeletons estimated by software provided by low-cost trackers (Ultraleap) and MR headsets (Hololens, Oculus Quest) or by video processing software modules (e.g. Google Mediapipe). Despite the recent advancements in gesture and action recognition from skeletons, it is unclear how well the current state-of-the-art techniques can perform in a real-world scenario for the recognition of a wide set of heterogeneous gestures, as many benchmarks do not test online recognition and use limited dictionaries. This motivated the proposal of the SHREC 2021: Track on Skeleton-based Hand Gesture Recognition in the Wild. For this contest, we created a novel dataset with heterogeneous gestures featuring different types and duration. These gestures have to be found inside sequences in an online recognition scenario. This paper presents the result of the contest, showing the performances of the techniques proposed by four research groups on the challenging task compared with a simple baseline method., Comment: 12 pages, to be published on Computers & Graphics

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
We consider the $\mathcal{N}=2$ SYM theory with gauge group SU($N$) and a matter content consisting of one multiplet in the symmetric and one in the anti-symmetric representation. This conformal theory admits a large-$N$ 't Hooft expansion and is dual to a particular orientifold of $AdS_{5}\times S^{5}$. We analyze this gauge theory relying on the matrix model provided by localization a la Pestun. Even though this matrix model has very non-trivial interactions, by exploiting the full Lie algebra approach to the matrix integration, we show that a large class of observables can be expressed in a closed form in terms of an infinite matrix depending on the 't Hooft coupling $\lambda$. These exact expressions can be used to generate the perturbative expansions at high orders in a very efficient way, and also to study analytically the leading behavior at strong coupling. We successfully compare these predictions to a direct Monte Carlo numerical evaluation of the matrix integral and to the Pad\'e resummations derived from very long perturbative series, that turn out to be extremely stable beyond the convergence disk $|\lambda|<\pi^2$ of the latter., Comment: v2:37 pages, 7 figures, a comment and a few references added

We analyse the Higgs branch of 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SQCD gauge theories with non-connected gauge groups $\widetilde{\mathrm{SU}}(N) = \mathrm{SU}(N) \rtimes_{I,II} \mathbb{Z}_2$ whose study was initiated in arXiv:1804.01108. We derive the Hasse diagrams corresponding to the Higgs mechanism using adapted characters for representations of non-connected groups. We propose 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ magnetic quivers for the Higgs branches in the type $I$ discrete gauging case, in the form of recently introduced wreathed quivers, and provide extensive checks by means of Coulomb branch Hilbert series computations.

We calculate the pair susceptibility of an attractive spin-polarized Fermi gas in the normal phase, as a function of the pair momentum. Close to unitarity, we find a strong enhancement of Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) pairing fluctuations over an extended region of the temperature-polarization phase diagram, which manifests itself as a pronounced peak in the pair-momentum distribution at a finite pair momentum. This peak should be amenable to experimental observation at achievable temperatures in a box-like trapping potential, as a fingerprint of FFLO pairing. Our calculations rest on a self-consistent t-matrix approach which, for the unitary balanced Fermi gas, has been validated against experimental data for several thermodynamic quantities., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures; includes calculations for a realistic box-like trapping potential

The COVID-19 pandemic considerably affects public health systems around the world. The lack of knowledge about the virus, the extension of this phenomenon, and the speed of the evolution of the infection are all factors that highlight the necessity of employing new approaches to study these events. Artificial intelligence techniques may be useful in analyzing data related to areas affected by the virus. The aim of this work is to investigate any possible relationships between air quality and confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Italian districts. Specifically, we report an analysis of the correlation between daily COVID-19 cases and environmental factors, such as temperature, relative humidity, and atmospheric pollutants. Our analysis confirms a significant association of some environmental parameters with the spread of the virus. This suggests that machine learning models trained on the environmental parameters to predict the number of future infected cases may be accurate. Predictive models may be useful for helping institutions in making decisions for protecting the population and contrasting the pandemic.

Motivated by the analysis of spectrometric data, we introduce a Gaussian graphical model for learning the dependence structure among frequency bands of the infrared absorbance spectrum. The spectra are modeled as continuous functional data through a B-spline basis expansion and a Gaussian graphical model is assumed as a prior specification for the smoothing coefficients to induce sparsity in their precision matrix. Bayesian inference is carried out to simultaneously smooth the curves and to estimate the conditional independence structure between portions of the functional domain. The proposed model is applied to the analysis of infrared absorbance spectra of strawberry purees.

A detailed description is given of the phase diagram for a two-component unitary Fermi gas with mass and population imbalance, for both homogeneous and trapped systems. This aims at providing quantitative benchmarks for the normal-to-superfluid phase transition of a mass-imbalanced Fermi gas in the temperature-polarization parameter space. A self-consistent t-matrix approach is adopted, which has already proven to accurately describe the thermodynamic properties of the mass and population balanced unitary Fermi gas. Even though for generic $\mathcal{N}=1$ theories it is not possible to separate distinct branches of supersymmetric vacua, in this paper we study a special class of $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs, these of Class $\mathcal{S}_k$ for which it is possible to define Coulomb and Higgs branches precisely as for the $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories of Class $\mathcal{S}$ from which they descend. We study the BPS operators that parameterise these branches of vacua using the different limits of the superconformal index as well as the Coulomb and Higgs branch Hilbert Series. High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
Building on arXiv:1911.05827, we uncover new properties of type-B conformal anomalies for Coulomb-branch operators in continuous families of 4D $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs. We study a large class of such anomalies on the Higgs branch, where conformal symmetry is spontaneously broken, and compare them with their counterpart in the CFT phase. In Lagrangian theories, the non-perturbative matching of the anomalies can be determined with a weak coupling Feynman diagram computation involving massive multi-loop banana integrals. We extract the part corresponding to the anomalies of interest. Our calculations support the general conjecture that the Coulomb-branch type-B conformal anomalies always match on the Higgs branch when the IR Coulomb-branch chiral ring is empty. In the opposite case, there are anomalies that do not match. An intriguing implication of the mismatch is the existence of a second covariantly constant metric on the conformal manifold (other than the Zamolodchikov metric), which imposes previously unknown restrictions on its holonomy group., Comment: 49 pages and supplementary Mathematica notebook; v2: references added; v3: typos corrected and comments added; v4: minor corrections and references added

Condensed Matter - Soft Condensed Matter - Abstract
Soft matter systems are renowned for being able to display complex emerging phenomena such as clustering phases. Recently, a surprising quantum phase transition has been revealed in a one-dimensional (1D) system composed of bosons interacting via a pairwise soft potential in the continuum. It was shown that the spatial coordinates undergoing two-particle clustering could be mapped into quantum spin variables of a 1D transverse Ising model. In this work we investigate the manifestation of an analogous critical phenomenon in 1D classical fluids of soft particles in the continuum. In particular, we study the low-temperature behavior of three different classical models of 1D soft matter, whose inter-particle interactions allow for clustering. The same string variables highlight that, at the commensurate density for the two-particle cluster phase, the peculiar pairing of neighboring soft particles can be nontrivially mapped onto a 1D discrete classical Ising model. We also observe a related phenomenon, namely the presence of an anomalous peak in the low-temperature specific heat, thus indicating the emergence of Schottky phenomenology in a non-magnetic fluid., Comment: 18 figures, 12 pages Accepted by Phys. We provide rigorous evidence that the ordered ground state configurations of a system of parallel oriented, ellipsoidal particles, interacting via a Gaussian interaction (termed in literature as Gaussian core nematics) {\it must} be infinitely degenerate: we have demonstrated that these configurations originate from the related ground state configuration of the corresponding symmetric Gaussian core system via a suitable stretching operation of this lattice in combination with an arbitrary rotation. These findings explain related observations in former investigations, which then remained unexplained. Our conclusions have far reaching consequences for the search of ground state configurations of other nematic particles.

In this paper we investigate the property of engulfing for $H$-convex functions defined on the Heisenberg group ${\mathbb{H}}^n$. Starting from the horizontal sections introduced by Capogna and Maldonado, we consider a new notion of section, called ${\mathbb{H}}^n$-section, as well as a new condition of engulfing associated to the ${\mathbb{H}}^n$-sections, for an $H$-convex function defined in ${\mathbb{H}}^n.$ These sections, that arise as suitable unions of horizontal sections, are dimensionally larger; as a matter of fact, the ${\mathbb{H}}^n$-sections, with their engulfing property, will lead to the definition of a pseudo-metric in ${\mathbb{H}}^n$ in a way similar to Aimar, Forzani and Toledano in the Euclidean case. A key role is played by the property of round $H$-sections for an $H$-convex function, and by its connection with the engulfing properties.

We study many-particle transport in heterogeneous, crowded environments at different particle P\'{e}clet numbers ($Pe^*$). We demonstrate that a modified Nakagami-$m$ function describes particle velocity probability distributions when particle deposition occurs. We assess the universality of said function through comparison against new Lagrangian simulations of various particle types as well as experimental data from the literature. We construe the function's physical meaning as its ability to explain particle deposition in terms of $Pe^*$ and the competition between distributions of energy barriers for particle release and particles' diffusive energy.

We present a new, simple and computationally efficient iterative method for low rank matrix completion. Our method is inspired by the class of factorization-type iterative algorithms, but substantially differs from them in the way the problem is cast. Precisely, given a target rank $r$, instead of optimizing on the manifold of rank $r$ matrices, we allow our interim estimated matrix to have a specific over-parametrized rank $2r$ structure. Our algorithm, denoted R2RILS for rank $2r$ iterative least squares, has low memory requirements, and at each iteration it solves a computationally cheap sparse least-squares problem. We motivate our algorithm by its theoretical analysis for the simplified case of a rank-1 matrix. Empirically, R2RILS is able to recover ill conditioned low rank matrices from very few observations -- near the information limit, and it is stable to additive noise.

In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. Here, we present a theoretical account of these experimental results in terms of an ab-initio self-consistent $t$-matrix calculation, which emphasizes the role of the pair-correlation function between opposite-spin fermions at equilibrium. In many machine learning scenarios, looking for the best classifier that fits a particular dataset can be very costly in terms of time and resources. Moreover, it can require deep knowledge of the specific domain. We propose a new technique which does not require profound expertise in the domain and avoids the commonly used strategy of hyper-parameter tuning and model selection. Our method is an innovative ensemble technique that uses voting rules over a set of randomly-generated classifiers. Given a new input sample, we interpret the output of each classifier as a ranking over the set of possible classes. We then aggregate these output rankings using a voting rule, which treats them as preferences over the classes. We show that our approach obtains good results compared to the state-of-the-art, both providing a theoretical analysis and an empirical evaluation of the approach on several datasets.

The Airy distribution (AD) describes the probability distribution of the area under a Brownian excursion. The AD is prominent in several areas of physics, mathematics and computer science. Here we use a dilute colloidal system to directly measure, for the first time, the AD in experiment. We also show how two different techniques of theory of large deviations - the Donsker-Varadhan formalism and the optimal fluctuation method - manifest themselves in the AD. We advance the theory of the AD by calculating, at large and small areas, the position distribution of a Brownian excursion conditioned on a given area, and measure its mean in the experiment. For large areas, we uncover two singularities in the large deviation function, which can be interpreted as dynamical phase transitions of third order. For small areas the position distribution coincides with the Ferrari-Spohn distribution, and we identify the reason for this coincidence., Comment: 5 pages plus appendices
