Intermediate mass black holes (10^2 < M_BH< 10^5 Msun) are an open question in our understanding of black hole evolution and growth. They have long been linked to dense star cluster environments thanks to cluster dynamics, but there are a limited number of secure detections. We leverage existing X-ray observations from Chandra X-ray Observatory and optical catalogs from Hubble Space Telescope with new radio observations from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array to search for any evidence of accreting black holes in young massive clusters in the nearby galaxy M51. We find that of 43 bright ($L_X > 10^{38}$ erg/s) X-ray point sources in M51, 24 had probable matches to objects including possible associated star clusters in the HST Legacy Extragalactic UV Survey catalog, seven of which were classified as contaminants (background galaxies or foreground stars). We explore the optical properties of the remaining 17 sources, including cluster age and mass estimates, and search for radio counterparts in the 8-12 GHz band. The lack of radio counterparts to X-ray sources we know to be associated with young massive clusters in M51 suggests that we do not significantly detect hard-state IMBHs ~ 10^4 Msun or above. Chemical staining methods are dependable but require extensive time, expensive chemicals, and raise environmental concerns. These challenges highlight the need for alternative solutions like virtual staining, which accelerates the diagnostic process and enhances stain application flexibility. Generative AI technologies are pivotal in addressing these issues. However, the high-stakes nature of healthcare decisions, especially in computational pathology, complicates the adoption of these tools due to their opaque processes. Our work introduces the use of generative AI for virtual staining, aiming to enhance performance, trustworthiness, scalability, and adaptability in computational pathology. The methodology centers on a singular H&E encoder supporting multiple stain decoders. This design focuses on critical regions in the latent space of H&E, enabling precise synthetic stain generation. Our method, tested to generate 8 different stains from a single H&E slide, offers scalability by loading only necessary model components during production. We integrate label-free knowledge in training, using loss functions and regularization to minimize artifacts, thus improving paired/unpaired virtual staining accuracy. To build trust, we use real-time self-inspection with discriminators for each stain type, providing pathologists with confidence heat-maps. Automatic quality checks on new H&E slides ensure conformity to the trained distribution, ensuring accurate synthetic stains. Recognizing pathologists' challenges with new technologies, we have developed an open-source, cloud-based system, that allows easy virtual staining of H&E slides through a browser, addressing hardware/software issues and facilitating real-time user feedback. We also curated a novel dataset of 8 paired H&E/stains related to pediatric Crohn's disease, comprising 480 WSIs to further stimulate computational pathology research.

Employee well-being is a critical concern in the contemporary workplace, as highlighted by the American Psychological Association's 2021 report, indicating that 71% of employees experience stress or tension. This stress contributes significantly to workplace attrition and absenteeism, with 61% of attrition and 16% of sick days attributed to poor mental health. A major challenge for employers is that employees often remain unaware of their mental health issues until they reach a crisis point, resulting in limited utilization of corporate well-being benefits. This research addresses this challenge by presenting a groundbreaking stress detection algorithm that provides real-time support preemptively. Leveraging automated chatbot technology, the algorithm objectively measures mental health levels by analyzing chat conversations, offering personalized treatment suggestions in real-time based on linguistic biomarkers. The study explores the feasibility of integrating these innovations into practical learning applications within real-world contexts and introduces a chatbot-style system integrated into the broader employee experience platform. This platform, encompassing various features, aims to enhance overall employee well-being, detect stress in real time, and proactively engage with individuals to improve support effectiveness, demonstrating a 22% increase when assistance is provided early. Overall, the study emphasizes the importance of fostering a supportive workplace environment for employees' mental health.

The flurry of theoretical and experimental studies following the report of room-temperature superconductivity at ambient pressure in Cu-substituted lead apatite Cu$_x$Pb$_{10-x}$(PO$_4$)$_6$O (`LK99') have explored whether and how this system might host strongly correlated physics including superconductivity. While first-principles calculations at low doping ($x\approx1$) have indicated a Cu-$d^{9}$ configuration coordinated with oxygen giving rise to isolated, correlated bands, its other structural, electronic, and magnetic properties diverge significantly from those of other known cuprate systems. Here we find that higher densities of ordered Cu substitutions can result in the formation of contiguous edge-sharing Cu-O chains, akin to those found in some members of the cuprate superconductor family. Interestingly, while such quasi-one-dimensional edge-sharing chains are typically ferromagnetically coupled along the chain, we find an antiferromagnetic ground-state magnetic order for our cuprate fragments which is in proximity to a ferromagnetic quantum critical point. This is a result of the elongated Cu-Cu distance in Cu-substituted apatite that leads to larger Cu-O-Cu angles supporting antiferromagnetism, which we demonstrate to be controllable by strain. Finally, our electronic structure calculations confirm the low-dimensional nature of the system and show that the bandwidth is driven by the Cu-O plaquette connectivity, resulting in an intermediate correlated regime., Comment: 6 pages plus Supplemental. Using well-calibrated experimental data we validate theoretical X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) as well as X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) calculations for titanium (Ti), titanium oxide (TiO), and titanium dioxide (TiO$_2$) at the Ti K- and L-edges as well as O K-edge. XAS and XES in combination with a multi-edge approach offer a detailed insight into the electronic structure of materials since both the occupied and unoccupied states, are probed. The experimental results are compared with ab initio calculations from the OCEAN package which uses the Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) approach. Using the same set of input parameters for each compound for calculations at different edges, the transferability of the OCEAN calculations across different spectroscopy methods and energy ranges is validated. Thus, the broad applicability for analysing and interpreting the electronic structure of materials with the OCEAN package is shown.

Flare frequency distributions represent a key approach to addressing one of the largest problems in solar and stellar physics: determining the mechanism that counter-intuitively heats coronae to temperatures that are orders of magnitude hotter than the corresponding photospheres. It is widely accepted that the magnetic field is responsible for the heating, but there are two competing mechanisms that could explain it: nanoflares or Alfv\'en waves. To date, neither can be directly observed. Nanoflares are, by definition, extremely small, but their aggregate energy release could represent a substantial heating mechanism, presuming they are sufficiently abundant. One way to test this presumption is via the flare frequency distribution, which describes how often flares of various energies occur. If the slope of the power law fitting the flare frequency distribution is above a critical threshold, $\alpha=2$ as established in prior literature, then there should be a sufficient abundance of nanoflares to explain coronal heating. We performed $>$600 case studies of solar flares, made possible by an unprecedented number of data analysts via three semesters of an undergraduate physics laboratory course. This allowed us to include two crucial, but nontrivial, analysis methods: pre-flare baseline subtraction and computation of the flare energy, which requires determining flare start and stop times. We aggregated the results of these analyses into a statistical study to determine that $\alpha = 1.63 \pm 0.03$. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is an element-specific materials characterization technique that is sensitive to structural and electronic properties. First-principles simulated XAS has been widely used as a powerful tool to interpret experimental spectra and draw physical insights. Recently, there has also been growing interest in building computational XAS databases to enable data analytics and machine learning applications. However, there are non-trivial differences among commonly used XAS simulation codes, both in underlying theoretical formalism and in technical implementation. Reliable and reproducible computational XAS databases require systematic benchmark studies. In this work, we benchmarked Ti K-edge XAS simulations of ten representative Ti-O binary compounds, which we refer to as the Ti-O-10 dataset, using three state-of-the-art codes: xspectra, ocean and exciting. We systematically studied the convergence behavior with respect to the input parameters and developed a workflow to automate and standardize the calculations to ensure converged spectra. Our benchmark comparison shows: (1) the two Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) codes (ocean and exciting) have excellent agreement in the energy range studied (up to 35 eV above the onset) with an average Spearman's rank correlation score of 0.998; (2) good agreement is obtained between the core-hole potential code (xspectra) and BSE codes (ocean and exciting) with an average Spearman's rank correlation score of 0.990. First-principles computational spectroscopy is a critical tool for interpreting experiment, performing structure refinement, and developing new physical understanding. Systematically setting up input files for different simulation codes and a diverse class of materials is a challenging task with a very high barrier-to-entry, given the complexities and nuances of each individual simulation package. This task is non-trivial even for experts in the electronic structure field and nearly formidable for non-expert researchers. Lightshow solves this problem by providing a uniform abstraction for writing computational x-ray spectroscopy input files for multiple popular codes, including FEFF, VASP, OCEAN, EXCITING and XSPECTRA. Computer architecture design space is vast and complex. Tools are needed to explore new ideas and gain insights quickly, with low efforts and at a desired accuracy. We propose Calipers, a criticality-based framework to model key abstractions of complex architectures and a program's execution using dynamic event-dependence graphs. By applying graph algorithms, Calipers can track instruction and event dependencies, compute critical paths, and analyze architecture bottlenecks. By manipulating the graph, Calipers enables architects to investigate a wide range of Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) and microarchitecture design choices/"what-if" scenarios during both early- and late-stage design space exploration without recompiling and rerunning the program. Calipers can model in-order and out-of-order microarchitectures, structural hazards, and different types of ISAs, and can evaluate multiple ideas in a single run. Modeling algorithms are described in detail. We apply Calipers to explore and gain insights in complex microarchitectural and ISA ideas for RISC and EDGE processors, at lower effort than cycle-accurate simulators and with comparable accuracy. For example, among a variety of investigations presented in the paper, experiments show that targeting only a fraction of critical loads can help realize most benefits of value prediction.

There is growing interest in the role of sentiment in economic decision-making. However, most research on the subject has focused on positive and negative valence. Conviction Narrative Theory (CNT) places Approach and Avoidance sentiment (that which drives action) at the heart of real-world decision-making, and argues that it better captures emotion in financial markets. This research, bringing together psychology and machine learning, introduces new techniques to differentiate Approach and Avoidance from positive and negative sentiment on a fundamental level of meaning. It does this by comparing word-lists, previously constructed to capture these concepts in text data, across a large range of semantic features. The results demonstrate that Avoidance in particular is well defined as a separate type of emotion, which is evaluative/cognitive and action-orientated in nature. Refining the Avoidance word-list according to these features improves macroeconomic models, suggesting that they capture the essence of Avoidance and that it plays a crucial role in driving real-world economic decision-making.

Qubits made from superconducting materials are a mature platform for quantum information science application such as quantum computing. However, materials-based losses are now a limiting factor in reaching the coherence times needed for applications. In particular, knowledge of the atomistic structure and properties of the circuit materials is needed to identify, understand, and mitigate materials-based decoherence channels. In this work we characterize the atomic structure of the native oxide film formed on Nb resonators by comparing fluctuation electron microscopy experiments to density functional theory calculations, finding that an amorphous layer consistent with an Nb$_2$O$_5$ stoichiometry. Comparing X-ray absorption measurements at the Oxygen K edge with first-principles calculations, we find evidence of d-type magnetic impurities in our sample, known to cause impedance in proximal superconductors. This work identifies the structural and chemical composition of the oxide layer grown on Nb superconductors, and shows that soft X-ray absorption can fingerprint magnetic impurities in these superconducting systems., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. A standard method to detect thermal neutrons is the nuclear interaction $^3$He(n,p)$^3$H. The spin-dependence of this interaction is also the basis of a neutron spin-polarization filter using nuclear polarized $^3$He. We consider the corresponding interaction for neutrons placed in an intrinsic orbital angular momentum (OAM) state. We derive the relative polarization-dependent absorption cross-sections for neutrons in an $L=1$ OAM state. The absorption of those neutrons results in compound states $J^\pi=0^-$, $1^-$, and $2^-$. Varying the three available polarizations tests that an OAM neutron has been absorbed and probes which decay states are physically possible. We describe the energetically likely excited states of $^4$He after absorption, due to the fact that the compound state has odd parity. This provides a definitive method for detecting neutron OAM states and suggests that intrinsic OAM states offer the possibility to observe new physics, including anomalous cross-sections and new channels of radioactive decay.

Models based on the transformer architecture, such as BERT, have marked a crucial step forward in the field of Natural Language Processing. Importantly, they allow the creation of word embeddings that capture important semantic information about words in context. However, as single entities, these embeddings are difficult to interpret and the models used to create them have been described as opaque. Binder and colleagues proposed an intuitive embedding space where each dimension is based on one of 65 core semantic features. Unfortunately, the space only exists for a small dataset of 535 words, limiting its uses. Previous work (Utsumi, 2018, 2020, Turton, Vinson & Smith, 2020) has shown that Binder features can be derived from static embeddings and successfully extrapolated to a large new vocabulary. Taking the next step, this paper demonstrates that Binder features can be derived from the BERT embedding space. This provides contextualised Binder embeddings, which can aid in understanding semantic differences between words in context. It additionally provides insights into how semantic features are represented across the different layers of the BERT model.

We propose a model of incomplete \textit{twofold multiprior preferences}, in which an act $f$ is ranked above an act $g$ only when $f$ provides higher utility in a worst-case scenario than what $g$ provides in a best-case scenario. The model explains failures of contingent reasoning, captured through a weakening of the state-by-state monotonicity (or dominance) axiom. Our model gives rise to rich comparative statics results, as well as extension exercises, and connections to choice theory. We present an application to second-price auctions.

Realizing a quantum spin liquid (QSL) ground state in a real material is a leading issue in condensed matter physics research. In this pursuit, it is crucial to fully characterize the structure and influence of defects, as these can significantly affect the fragile QSL physics. Here, we perform a variety of cutting-edge synchrotron X-ray scattering and spectroscopy techniques, and we advance new methodologies for site-specific diffraction and L-edge Zn absorption spectroscopy. The experimental results along with our first-principles calculations address outstanding questions about the local and long-range structures of the two leading kagome QSL candidates, Zn-substituted barlowite Cu$_3$Zn$_{x}$Cu$_{1-x}$(OH)$_6$FBr and herbertsmithite Cu$_3$Zn(OH)$_6$Cl$_2$. On all length scales probed, there is no evidence that Zn substitutes onto the kagome layers, thereby preserving the QSL physics of the kagome lattice. Our calculations show that antisite disorder is not energetically favorable and is even less favorable in Zn-barlowite compared to herbertsmithite. Site-specific X-ray diffraction measurements of Zn-barlowite reveal that Cu$^{2+}$ and Zn$^{2+}$ selectively occupy distinct interlayer sites, in contrast to herbertsmithite. Using the first measured Zn L-edge inelastic X-ray absorption spectra combined with calculations, we discover a systematic correlation between the loss of inversion symmetry from pseudo-octahedral (herbertsmithite) to trigonal prismatic coordination (Zn-barlowite) with the emergence of a new peak. Overall, our measurements suggest that Zn-barlowite has structural advantages over herbertsmithite that make its magnetic properties closer to an ideal QSL candidate: its kagome layers are highly resistant to nonmagnetic defects while the interlayers can accommodate a higher amount of Zn substitution., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

Stabilizing high-valent redox couples and exotic electronic states necessitate an understanding of the stabilization mechanism. In oxides, whether they are being considered for energy storage or computing, highly oxidized oxide-anion species rehybridize to form short covalent bonds and are related to significant local structural distortions. In intercalation oxide electrodes for batteries, while such reorganization partially stabilizes oxygen redox, it also gives rise to substantial hysteresis. In this work, we investigate oxygen redox in layered Na2-XMn3O7, a positive electrode material with ordered Mn vacancies. We show that coulombic interactions between oxidized oxide-anions and the interlayer Na vacancies can disfavor rehybridization and stabilize hole polarons on oxygen at 4.2 V vs. Na/Na+. These coulombic interactions provide thermodynamic energy saving as large as O-O covalent bonding and enable ~ 40 mV voltage hysteresis over multiple electrochemical cycles with negligible voltage fade. Our results establish a complete picture of redox energetics by highlighting the role of coulombic interactions across several atomic distances and suggest avenues to stabilize highly oxidized oxygen for applications in energy storage and beyond., Comment: 19 pages, 4 Figures, Research Article

The refractive index of a y-cut SiO$_2$ crystal surface is reconstructed from polarization dependent soft X-ray reflectometry measurements in the energy range from 45 eV to 620 eV. Due to the anisotropy of the crystal structure in the (100) and (001) directions, we observe a significant deviation of the measured reflectance at the Si-L$_{2,3}$ and O-K absorption edges. The anisotropy in the optical constants reconstructed from these data is also confirmed by ab initio Bethe-Salpeter Equation calculations of the O-K edge. This new experimental dataset expands the existing literature data for quartz optical constants significantly, particularly in the near-edge regions.

Density-functional theory simplifies many-electron calculations by approximating the exchange and correlation interactions with a one-electron operator that is a functional of the density. Hybrid functionals incorporate some amount of exact exchange, improving agreement with measured electronic and structural properties. However, calculations with hybrid functionals require substantial computational resources, limiting their use. By calculating the exchange interaction of periodic systems with single-precision arithmetic, the computation time is cut nearly in half with a negligible loss in accuracy. This improvement makes exact exchange calculations quicker and more feasible, especially for high-throughput calculations. Example hybrid density-functional theory calculations of band energies, forces, and x-ray absorption spectra show that this single-precision implementation maintains accuracy with significantly reduced runtime and memory requirements.

We present Fe K$\beta$ X-ray emission (XES) and Fe K X-ray absorption spectra (XAS) of Iron(II)sulfide (FeS) and Iron(II)disulfide (FeS$_2$). While XES and XAS offer different discrimination capabilities for chemical speciation, depending on the valence states of the compounds probed, XES allows for using different excitation sources. The XES data was measured using polychromatic X-ray radiation with a full-cylinder von Hamos spectrometer being characterized by an energy window of up to 700 eV and a spectral resolving power of $E/ \Delta E = 800$. The large energy window at a single position of the spectrometer components is made profit of to circumvent the instrumental sensitivity of wavelength-dispersive spectrometers to sample positioning. This results in a robust energy scale which is used to compare experimental data with ab initio valence-to-core calculations, which are carried out using the OCEAN package. To validate the reliability of the OCEAN package for the two sample systems, near edge X-ray absorption fine structure measurements of the Fe K absorption edge are compared to theory using the same input parameters as in the case of the X-ray emission calculations. Based on the example of iron sulfide compounds, the combination of XES experiments and OCEAN calculations allows unravelling the electronic structure of different transition metal sulfides and qualifying XES investigations for the speciation of different compounds.

Various many-body perturbation theory techniques for calculating electron behavior rely on {\it W}, the screened Coulomb interaction. Computing {\it W} requires complete knowledge of the dielectric response of the electronic system, and the fidelity of the calculated dielectric response limits the reliability of predicted electronic and structural properties. As a simplification, calculations often begin with the random-phase approximation (RPA). However, even RPA calculations are costly and scale poorly, typically as $N^4$ ($N$ representing the system size). A local approach has been shown to be efficient while maintaining accuracy for screening core-level excitations [Ultramicroscopy {\bf 106}, 986 (2006)]. We extend this method to valence-level excitations. We present improvements to the accuracy and execution of this scheme, including reconstruction of the all-electron character of the pseudopotential-based wave functions, improved $N^2\log N$ scaling, and a parallelized implementation. We discuss applications to Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) calculations of core and valence spectroscopies.

The binary star Par 1802 in the Orion Nebula presents an interesting puzzle in the field of stellar dynamics and evolution. Binary systems such as Par 1802 are thought to form from the same natal material and thus the stellar members are expected to have very similar physical attributes. However, Par 1802's stars have significantly different temperatures despite their identical (within $3\%$) masses of about $0.39$ solar mass. The leading proof-of-concept idea is that a third companion gravitationally induced the two stars to orbit closer than their Roche-limit, which facilitated heating through tidal effects. Here we expand on this idea and study the three-body dynamical evolution of such a system, including tidal and pre-main-sequence evolution. We also include tidal heating and mass transfer at the onset of Roche-limit Crossing. We show, as a proof-of-concept, that mass transfer combined with tidal heating can naturally explain the observed temperature discrepancy. We also predict the orbital configuration of the possible tertiary companion. Finally we suggest that the dynamical evolution of such a system has pervasive consequences. This paper investigates bandwidth-efficient DRAM caching for hybrid DRAM + 3D-XPoint memories. 3D-XPoint is becoming a viable alternative to DRAM as it enables high-capacity and non-volatile main memory systems; however, 3D-XPoint has 4-8x slower read, and worse writes. As such, effective DRAM caching in front of 3D-XPoint is important to enable a high-capacity, low-latency, and high-write-bandwidth memory. There are two major approaches for DRAM cache design: (1) a Tag-Inside-Cacheline (TIC) organization that optimizes for hits, by storing tag next to each line such that one access gets both tag and data, and (2) a Tag-Outside-Cacheline (TOC) organization that optimizes for misses, by storing tags from multiple data-lines together such that one tag-access gets info for several data-lines. Ideally, we desire the low hit-latency of TIC, and the low miss-bandwidth of TOC. To this end, we propose TicToc, an organization that provisions both TIC and TOC to get hit and miss benefits of both. However, we find that naively combining both actually performs worse than TIC, because one needs to pay bandwidth to maintain both metadata. The main contribution of this work is developing architectural techniques to reduce the bandwidth of maintaining both TIC and TOC metadata. We find the majority of the bandwidth cost is due to maintaining TOC dirty bits. We propose DRAM Cache Dirtiness Bit, which carries DRAM cache dirty info to last-level caches, to prune repeated dirty-bit checks for known dirty lines. We then propose Preemptive Dirty Marking, which predicts which lines will be written and proactively marks dirty bit at install time, to amortize the initial dirty-bit update. Our evaluations on a 4GB DRAM cache with 3D-XPoint memory show that TicToc enables 10% speedup over baseline TIC, nearing 14% speedup possible with an idealized DRAM cache w/ 64MB of SRAM tags, while needing only 34KB SRAM.

This paper investigates intelligent replacement policies for improving the hit-rate of gigascale DRAM caches. Cache replacement policies are commonly used to improve the hit-rate of on-chip caches. The most effective replacement policies often require the cache to track per-line reuse state to inform their decision. A fundamental challenge on DRAM caches, however, is that stateful policies would require significant bandwidth to maintain per-line DRAM cache state. As such, DRAM cache replacement policies have primarily been stateless policies, such as always-install or probabilistic bypass. Unfortunately, we find that stateless policies are often too coarse-grain and become ineffective at the size and associativity of DRAM caches. Ideally, we want a replacement policy that can obtain the hit-rate benefits of stateful replacement policies, but keep the bandwidth-efficiency of stateless policies. In our study, we find that tracking per-line reuse state can enable an effective replacement policy that can mitigate common thrashing patterns seen in gigascale caches. We propose a stateful replacement/bypass policy called RRIP Age-On-Bypass (RRIP-AOB), that tracks reuse state for high-reuse lines, protects such lines by bypassing other lines, and Ages the state On cache Bypass. Unfortunately, such a stateful technique requires significant bandwidth to update state. To this end, we propose Efficient Tracking of Reuse (ETR). ETR makes state tracking efficient by accurately tracking the state of only one line from a region, and using the state of that line to guide the replacement decisions for other lines in that region. ETR reduces the bandwidth for tracking replacement state by 70%, and makes stateful policies practical for DRAM caches. Our evaluations with a 2GB DRAM cache, show that our RRIP-AOB and ETR techniques provide 18% speedup while needing less than 1KB of SRAM.

The TRAPPIST-1 system has 7 known terrestrial planets arranged compactly in a mean motion resonant chain around an ultra-cool central star, some within the estimated habitable zone. Given their short orbital periods of just a few days, it is often presumed that the planets are tidally locked such that the spin rate is equal to that of the orbital mean motion. However, the compact, and resonant, nature of the system implies that there can be significant variations in the mean motion of these planets due to their mutual interactions. We show that such fluctuations can then have significant effects on the spin states of these planets. In this paper, we analyze, using detailed numerical simulations, the mean motion histories of the three planets that are thought to lie within or close to the habitable zone of the system: planets d, e, and f. We demonstrate that, depending on the strength of the mutual interactions within the system, these planets can be pushed into spin states which are effectively non-synchronous. We find that it can produce significant libration of the spin state, if not complete circulation in the frame co-rotating with the orbit. We also show that these spin states are likely to be unable to sustain long-term stability, with many of our simulations suggesting that the spin evolves, under the influence of tidal synchronization forces, into quasi-stable attractor states, which last on timescales of thousands of years., Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures. X-ray absorption and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering measurements are carried out on lithium nitrate LiNO$_3$. The $\sigma$ orbitals around the nitrogen atoms exhibit a large lifetime effect. Experimentally, this is manifest as an apparent weakening of the x-ray emission signal from these states, but a closer examination shows that instead it is due to extreme broadening. This echos previous studies on ammonium nitrate, which, despite large differences in the cation and space group, showed a similar effect associated with the nitrate. Using first-principles $GW$ self-energy and Bethe-Salpeter equation calculations we show that this effect is due in part to short quasi-hole lifetimes for the orbitals constituting the NO $\sigma$ bonds.

Recent debates on the oxygen redox behaviors in battery electrodes have triggered a pressing demand for the reliable detection and understanding of non-divalent oxygen states beyond conventional absorption spectroscopy. Here, enabled by high-efficiency mapping of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (mRIXS) coupled with first-principles calculations, we report distinct mRIXS features of the oxygen states in Li2O, Li2CO3, and especially, Li2O2, which are successfully reproduced and interpreted theoretically. mRIXS signals are dominated by valence-band decays in Li2O and Li2CO3. However, the oxidized oxygen in Li2O2 leads to partially unoccupied O-2p states that yield a specific intra-band excitonic feature in mRIXS. Such a feature displays a specific emission energy in mRIXS, which disentangles the oxidized oxygen states from the dominating transition-metal/oxygen hybridization features in absorption spectroscopy, thus providing critical hints for both detecting and understanding the oxygen redox reactions in transition-metal oxide based battery materials., Comment: 25 pages, 4 figures, plus 11 pages of Supplementary Information with 4 figures

We propose a framework for the completely unsupervised learning of latent object properties from their interactions: the perception-prediction network (PPN). Consisting of a perception module that extracts representations of latent object properties and a prediction module that uses those extracted properties to simulate system dynamics, the PPN can be trained in an end-to-end fashion purely from samples of object dynamics. The representations of latent object properties learned by PPNs not only are sufficient to accurately simulate the dynamics of systems comprised of previously unseen objects, but also can be translated directly into human-interpretable properties (e.g., mass, coefficient of restitution) in an entirely unsupervised manner. Crucially, PPNs also generalize to novel scenarios: their gradient-based training can be applied to many dynamical systems and their graph-based structure functions over systems comprised of different numbers of objects. Our results demonstrate the efficacy of graph-based neural architectures in object-centric inference and prediction tasks, and our model has the potential to discover relevant object properties in systems that are not yet well understood., Comment: UAI 2018 (oral)

This paper investigates hardware-based memory compression designs to increase the memory bandwidth. When lines are compressible, the hardware can store multiple lines in a single memory location, and retrieve all these lines in a single access, thereby increasing the effective memory bandwidth. However, relocating and packing multiple lines together depending on the compressibility causes a line to have multiple possible locations. Therefore, memory compression designs typically require metadata to specify the compressibility of the line. Unfortunately, even in the presence of dedicated metadata caches, maintaining and accessing this metadata incurs significant bandwidth overheads and can degrade performance by as much as 40%. Ideally, we want to implement memory compression while eliminating the bandwidth overheads of metadata accesses. This paper proposes CRAM, a bandwidth-efficient design for memory compression that is entirely hardware based and does not require any OS support or changes to the memory modules or interfaces. CRAM uses a novel implicit-metadata mechanism, whereby the compressibility of the line can be determined by scanning the line for a special marker word, eliminating the overheads of metadata access. CRAM is equipped with a low-cost Line Location Predictor (LLP) that can determine the location of the line with 98% accuracy. Furthermore, we also develop a scheme that can dynamically enable or disable compression based on the bandwidth cost of storing compressed lines and the bandwidth benefits of obtaining compressed lines, ensuring no degradation for workloads that do not benefit from compression. Our evaluations, over a diverse set of 27 workloads, show that CRAM provides a speedup of up to 73% (average 6%) without causing slowdown for any of the workloads, and consuming a storage overhead of less than 300 bytes at the memory controller.

The behavior of an interior test particle in the secular 3-body problem has been studied extensively. A well-known feature is the Lidov-Kozai resonance in which the test particle's argument of periapse librates about $\pm 90^\circ$ and large oscillations in eccentricity and inclination are possible. Less explored is the inverse problem: the dynamics of an exterior test particle and an interior perturber. We survey numerically the inverse secular problem, expanding the potential to hexadecapolar order and correcting an error in the published expansion. Four secular resonances are uncovered that persist in full $N$-body treatments (in what follows, $\varpi$ and $\Omega$ are the longitudes of periapse and of ascending node, $\omega$ is the argument of periapse, and subscripts 1 and 2 refer to the inner perturber and outer test particle): (i) an orbit-flipping quadrupole resonance requiring a non-zero perturber eccentricity $e_1$, in which $\Omega_2-\varpi_1$ librates about $\pm 90^\circ$; (ii) a hexadecapolar resonance (the "inverse Kozai" resonance) for perturbers that are circular or nearly so and inclined by $I \simeq 63^\circ/117^\circ$, in which $\omega_2$ librates about $\pm 90^\circ$ and which can vary the particle eccentricity by $\Delta e_2 \simeq 0.2$ and lead to orbit crossing; (iii) an octopole "apse-aligned" resonance at $I \simeq 46^\circ/107^\circ$ wherein $\varpi_2 - \varpi_1$ librates about $0^\circ$ and $\Delta e_2$ grows with $e_1$; and (iv) an octopole resonance at $I \simeq 73^\circ/134^\circ$ wherein $\varpi_2 + \varpi_1 - 2 \Omega_2$ librates about $0^\circ$ and $\Delta e_2$ can be as large as 0.3 for small $e_1 \neq 0$. The more eccentric the perturber, the more the particle's eccentricity and inclination vary; also, more polar orbits are more chaotic. One longstanding problem for the potential habitability of planets within M dwarf systems is their likelihood to be tidally locked in a synchronously rotating spin state. This problem thus far has largely been addressed only by considering two objects: the star and the planet itself. However, many systems have been found to harbor multiple planets, with some in or very near to mean-motion resonances. The presence of a planetary companion near a mean-motion resonance can induce oscillatory variations in the mean-motion of the planet, which we demonstrate can have significant effects on the spin-state of an otherwise synchronously rotating planet. In particular, we find that a planetary companion near a mean-motion resonance can excite the spin states of planets in the habitable zone of small, cool stars, pushing otherwise synchronously rotating planets into higher amplitude librations of the spin state, or even complete circulation resulting in effective stellar days with full surface coverage on the order of years or decades. This increase in illuminated area can have potentially dramatic influences on climate, and thus on habitability. We also find that the resultant spin state can be very sensitive to initial conditions due to the chaotic nature of the spin state at early times within certain regimes. Photoelectron emission microscopy PEEM is a powerful tool to spectroscopically image dynamic surface processes at the nanoscale but is traditionally limited to ultra high or moderate vacuum conditions. Here, we develop a novel grapheme capped multichannel array sample platform that extends the capabilities of photoelectron spectromicroscopy to routine liquid and atmospheric pressure studies with standard PEEM setups. Using this platform, we show that graphene has only a minor influence on the electronic structure of water in the first few layers and thus will allow for the examination of minimally perturbed aqueous phase interfacial dynamics. Analogous to microarray screening technology in biomedical research, our platform is highly suitable for applications in tandem with large-scale data mining, pattern recognition, and combinatorial methods for spectro temporal and spatiotemporal analyses at solid liquid interfaces. Constrained-occupancy self-consistent-field ($\Delta$SCF) methods and many-body perturbation theories (MBPT) are two strategies for obtaining electronic excitations from first-principles. Using the two distinct approaches, we study the O $1s$ core excitations that have become increasingly important for characterizing transition metal oxides and developing theory of strong correlations. Interestingly, we find that the $\Delta$SCF approach, in its current single-particle form, systematically underestimates the pre-edge intensity for chosen oxides, despite its success in weakly correlated systems. By contrast, the Bethe-Salpeter equation within MBPT predicts much better lineshapes. This inspires us to reexamine the many-electron dynamics of X-ray excitations. We find that the single-particle $\Delta$SCF approach can be rectified by explicitly calculating many-body transition amplitudes, producing X-ray spectra in excellent agreement with experiments. Our study paves the way to accurately predict X-ray near-edge spectral fingerprints for physics and materials science beyond the Bethe-Salpether equation.

Future collider detectors, including silicon tracking detectors planned for the High Luminosity LHC, will require components and mechanical structures providing unprecedented strength-to-mass ratios, thermal conductivity, and radiation tolerance. We present an efficient implementation of the Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) method for obtaining core-level spectra including x-ray absorption (XAS), x-ray emission (XES), and both resonant and non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectra (N/RIXS). Calculations are based on density functional theory (DFT) electronic structures generated either by abinit or Quantumespresso, both plane-wave basis, pseudopotential codes. This electronic structure is improved through the inclusion of a GW self energy. The projector augmented wave technique is used to evaluate transition matrix elements between core-level and band states. Final two-particle scattering states are obtained with the NIST core-level BSE solver (NBSE). We have previously reported this implementation, which we refer to as ocean (Obtaining Core Excitations from Ab initio electronic structure and NBSE) [Phys. Rev. B 83, 115106 (2011)]. Here, we present additional efficiencies that enable us to evaluate spectra for systems ten times larger than previously possible; containing up to a few thousand electrons. These improvements include the implementation of optimal basis functions that reduce the cost of the initial DFT calculations, more complete parallelization of the screening calculation and of the action of the BSE Hamiltonian, and various memory reductions. Scaling is demonstrated on supercells of SrTiO_3 and example spectra for the organic light emitting molecule Tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminum (Alq_3 ) are presented. The ability to perform large-scale spectral calculations is particularly advantageous for investigating dilute or non-periodic systems such as doped materials, amorphous systems, or complex nano-structures., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

Semiconductor materials that can be doped both n-type and p-type are desirable for diode-based applications and transistor technology. Copper nitride (Cu3N) is a metastable semiconductor with a solar-relevant bandgap that has been reported to exhibit bipolar doping behavior. However, deeper understanding and better control of the mechanism behind this behavior in Cu3N is currently lacking in the literature. In this work, we use combinatorial growth with a temperature gradient to demonstrate both conduction types of phase-pure, sputter-deposited Cu3N thin films. Room temperature Hall effect and Seebeck effect measurements show n-type Cu3N with 10^17 electrons/cm^3 for low growth temperature (~35 degrees C) and p-type with 10^15-10^16 holes/cm^3 for elevated growth temperatures (50-120 degrees C). Mobility for both types of Cu3N was ~0.1-1 cm^2/Vs. Additionally, temperature- dependent Hall effect measurements indicate that ionized defects are an important scattering mechanism in p-type films. By combining X-ray absorption spectroscopy and first-principles defect theory, we determined that V_Cu defects form preferentially in p-type Cu3N while Cu_i defects form preferentially in n-type Cu3N. Based on these theoretical and experimental results, we propose a kinetic defect formation mechanism for bipolar doping in Cu3N, that is also supported by positron annihilation experiments. Overall, the results of this work highlight the importance of kinetic processes in the defect physics of metastable materials, and provide a framework that can be applied when considering the properties of such materials in general., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, accepted manuscript

We study the distribution of the minimum spacing between eigenvalues of a random n by n unitary matrix. The minimum spacing scales as $n^{-4/3}$, not $n^{-2}$ as would be the case for n independent points on the unit circle, illustrating the well known phenomenon that the eigenvalues of random matrices 'repel each other'. We derive the distribution for the rescaled minimum spacing in the limit as $n\to\infty$. To find the minimum spacing, we count the number of eigenvalue pairs closer than $xn^{-4/3}$. We use heuristics to guess that this integer-valued random variable is Poisson, calculate the actual moments of the limiting distribution, and find that the actual moments match those of the guess. The matching moments prove that the heuristic guess is correct, and lead directly to the main result. We prove analogous results for the Gaussian unitary ensemble (GUE) and, with restrictions, a universal class of unitary ensembles (UUE) studied by Deift, Kreicherbauer, McLaughlin, Venakides, and Zhou., Comment: This is my Ph.D. thesis from 2001. Theoretical optical and x-ray spectra of model structures of water and ice are calculated using a many-body perturbation theory, Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) approach implemented in the valence- and core-excitation codes AI2NBSE and OCEAN. These codes use ab initio density functional theory wave functions from a plane-wave, pseudopotential code, quasi-particle self energy corrections, and a BSE treatment of particle-hole interactions. The approach improves upon independent-particle methods through the inclusion of a complex, energy-dependent self energy and screened particle-hole interactions to account for inelastic losses and excitonic effects. These many-body effects are found to be crucial for quantitative calculations of ice and water spectra.

We present a hybrid approach for GW/Bethe-Salpeter Equation (BSE) calculations of core excitation spectra, including x-ray absorption (XAS), electron energy loss spectra (EELS), and non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (NRIXS). The method is based on {\it ab initio} wavefunctions from the plane-wave pseudopotential code ABINIT; atomic core-level states and projector augmented wave (PAW) transition matrix elements; the NIST core-level BSE solver; and a many-pole GW self-energy model to account for final-state broadening and self-energy shifts. Multiplet effects are also accounted for. The approach is implemented using an interface dubbed OCEAN (Obtaining Core Excitations using ABINIT and NBSE). To demonstrate the utility of the code we present results for the K-edges in LiF as probed by XAS and NRIXS, the K-edges of KCl as probed by XAS, the Ti L_2,3-edge in SrTiO_3 as probed by XAS, and the Mg L_2,3-edge in MgO as probed by XAS. We compare the results to experiments and results obtained using other theoretical approaches.

Unfamiliar, large-scale virtual environments are difficult to navigate. This paper presents design guidelines to ease navigation in such virtual environments. The guidelines presented here focus on the design and placement of landmarks in virtual environments. Moreover, the guidelines are based primarily on the extensive empirical literature on navigation in the real world.
