This study evaluates the influence of the algorithm used to calculate conditional ionisation cluster size distributions (ICSD) and nanodosimetric parameters from proton track structures obtained with Geant4-DNA simulations. The Uniform Sampling (US) and Associated Volume (AV) sampling algorithms and the DBSCAN clustering algorithm were used to calculate the ICSD conditioned on cluster sizes $\nu \ge 1$. In the AV algorithm, we explored two configurations: one where sampling volumes could overlap ("Overlap") and one where volumes could not overlap ("No Overlap"). The Overlap configuration was corrected with the weight function $w(\nu)=\nu^{-1}$ to eliminate the bias towards regions of high density of ionisations. In sampling algorithms, clusters were defined as the number of ionisations in spheres of 3.4 nm in diameter. In DBSCAN, clusters were formed according to a proximity criterion (maximum distance of 3.4 nm) between two ionisations - no additional geometrical restrictions were applied. The conditional ICSD, the mean cluster size, and a set of complementary cumulative frequencies were compared. We considered differences in the mean difference larger than two standard deviations statistically significant. Overall, differences between the No Overlap and the Overlap configurations and between the US and AV algorithms were statistically significant but relatively small, except when statistical fluctuations dominated. DBSCAN always resulted in significantly larger mean cluster sizes. We showed that the fast and efficient AV can be used instead of the relatively inefficient US to calculate conditional ICSDs without significant loss of accuracy. The differences observed between DBSCAN and the other algorithms are understood and originate in the fact that while the scoring volume is fixed for the sampling algorithms, for DBSCAN, it evolves according to the distance between ionisations., Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures

Computational approaches, such as Monte Carlo (MC) radiation transport simulations, are used to estimate the dosimetric effects of GNPs, where results differing by orders of magnitudes have been reported by different investigators. This has motivated an intercomparison exercise, which was conducted as a joint activity of EURADOS Working Groups 6 "Computational Dosimetry" and 7 "Internal Dosimetry". The aim of this exercise was to determine the extent of such discrepancies between the results obtained by different researchers and different codes in a very simple simulation setup. Several individual EURADOS associate members and two code developer groups from outside Europe participated in this exercise applying seven different MC codes to perform the simulations of a simple defined geometry set-up of one single GNP irradiated in water by kilo-voltage X-rays. Two GNP diameters of 50 nm and 100 nm of were considered and two photon spectra as generated by X-ray tubes operated at 50 kV and 100 kV peak voltages. The geometry set-up and X-ray spectra were provided by the EURADOS task group. The participants were asked to determine for each combination of GNP size and X-ray spectrum the dose enhancement ratio (DER) of 10 nm-thick water shells up to 1000 nm and 1 $\mu$m-thick water shells up to 50 $\mu$m around the GNP. Furthermore, the electron spectra emitted from the GNP and the energy depositions in water shells around it were also to be reported. Organized by Working Group 6 "Computational Dosimetry" of the European Radiation Dosimetry Group (EURADOS), a group of intercomparison exercises was conducted in which participants were asked to solve predefined problems in computational dosimetry. The results of these comparisons were published in a series of articles in this virtual special issue of Radiation Measurements. Our understanding of radiation induced cellular damage has greatly improved over the past decades. Despite this progress, there are still many obstacles to fully understanding how radiation interacts with biologically relevant cellular components to form observable endpoints. One hurdle is the difficulty faced by members of different research groups in directly comparing results. Multiple Monte Carlo codes have been developed to simulate damage induction at the DNA scale, while at the same time various groups have developed models that describe DNA repair processes with varying levels of detail. These repair models are intrinsically linked to the damage model employed in their development, making it difficult to disentangle systematic effects in either part of the modelling chain. The modelling chain typically consists of track structure Monte Carlo simulations of the physics interactions creating direct damages to the DNA; followed by simulations of the production and initial reactions of chemical species causing indirect damages. After the DNA damage induction, DNA repair models combine the simulated damage patterns with biological models to determine the biological consequences of the damage. We propose a new Standard data format for DNA Damage to unify the interface between the simulation of damage induction and the biological modelling of cell repair processes. Such a standard greatly facilitates inter model comparisons, providing an ideal environment to tease out model assumptions and identify persistent, underlying mechanisms. Through inter model comparisons, this unified standard has the potential to greatly advance our understanding of the underlying mechanisms of radiation induced DNA damage and the resulting observable biological effects.

An intercomparison of microdosimetric and nanodosimetric quantities simulated Monte Carlo codes is in progress with the goal of assessing the uncertainty contribution to simulated results due to the uncertainties of the electron interaction cross-sections used in the codes. In the first stage of the intercomparison, significant discrepancies were found for nanodosimetric quantities as well as for microdosimetric simulations of a radiation source placed at the surface of a spherical water scoring volume. This paper reports insight gained from further analysis, including additional results for the microdosimetry case where the observed discrepancies in the simulated distributions could be traced back to the difference between track-structure and condensed-history approaches. Furthermore, detailed investigations into the sensitivity of nanodosimetric distributions to alterations in inelastic electron scattering cross-sections are presented which were conducted in the lead up to the definition of an approach to be used in the second stage of the intercomparison to come. The suitability of simulation results for assessing the sought uncertainty contributions from cross-sections is discussed and a proposed framework is described., Comment: 23 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables plus 3 supplementary figures

Organized by the European Radiation Dosimetry Group (EURADOS), a Monte Carlo code intercomparison exercise was conducted where participants simulated the emitted electron spectra and energy deposition around a single gold nanoparticle (GNP) irradiated by X-rays. In the exercise, the participants scored energy imparted in concentric spherical shells around a spherical volume filled with gold or water as well as the spectral distribution of electrons leaving the GNP. Initially, only the ratio of energy deposition with and without GNP was to be reported. During the evaluation of the exercise, however, the data for energy deposition in the presence and absence of the GNP were also requested. A GNP size of 50 nm and 100 nm diameter was considered as well as two different X-ray spectra (50 kVp and 100kVp). This introduced a redundancy that can be used to cross-validate the internal consistency of the simulation results. In this work, evaluation of the reported results is presented in terms of integral quantities that can be benchmarked against values obtained from physical properties of the radiation spectra and materials involved. Results of a Monte Carlo code intercomparison exercise for simulations of the dose enhancement from a gold nanoparticle (GNP) irradiated by X-rays have been recently reported. To highlight potential differences between codes, the dose enhancement ratios (DERs) were shown for the narrow-beam geometry used in the simulations, which leads to values significantly higher than unity over distances in the order of several tens of micrometers from the GNP surface. As it has come to our attention that the figures in our paper have given rise to misinterpretation as showing 'the' DERs of GNPs under diagnostic X-ray irradiation, this article presents estimates of the DERs that would have been obtained with realistic radiation field extensions and presence of secondary particle equilibrium (SPE). These DER values are much smaller than those for a narrow-beam irradiation shown in our paper, and significant dose enhancement is only found within a few hundred nanometers around the GNP. The approach used to obtain these estimates required the development of a methodology to identify and, where possible, correct results from simulations whose implementation deviated from the initial exercise definition. New data from GSI on the production-cross-section for fragmentation of the systems 56Fe+p and 56Fe+Ti at 1 A GeV revealed the appearance of even-odd staggering in the cross-section distribution for chains of isotopes with given N-Z. The staggering is strongly enhanced for the chain N=Z, it reduces as the production moves away from the N=Z chain, and it reverses for the most neutron-rich odd-A residues. The Geant4-DNA project proposes to develop an open-source simulation software based and fully included in the general-purpose Geant4 Monte Carlo simulation toolkit. The main objective of this software is to simulate biological damages induced by ionising radiation at the cellular and sub-cellular scale. This project was originally initiated by the European Space Agency for the prediction of deleterious effects of radiation that may affect astronauts during future long duration space exploration missions. In this paper, the Geant4-DNA collaboration presents an overview of the whole ongoing project, including its most recent developments already available in the last Geant4 public release (9.3 BETA), as well as an illustration example simulating the direct irradiation of a chromatin fibre. Expected extensions involving several research domains, such as particle physics, chemistry and cellular and molecular biology, within a fully interdiciplinary activity of the Geant4 collaboration are also discussed., Comment: presented by S. Production cross sections of medium-mass neutron-rich nuclei obtained in the fragmentation of 136Xe projectiles at 1 A GeV have been measured with the FRagment Separator (FRS) at GSI. 125Pd was identified for the first time. The measured cross sections are compared to 238U fission yields and model calculations in order to determine the optimum reaction mechanism to extend the limits of the chart of the nuclides around the r-process waiting point at N=82., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

This paper presents the nuclide cross sections and the longitudinal velocity distributions of residues produced in the reactions of 136Xe and 124Xe at 1 A GeV in a lead target, measured at the high-resolution magnetic spectrometer, the Fragment Separator (FRS) of GSI. The data cover a broad range of isotopes of the elements between Z = 3 and Z = 56 for 136Xe and between Z = 5 and Z = 55 for 124Xe, reaching down to cross sections of a few microbarns. The velocity distributions exhibit a Gaussian shape for masses above A = 20, while more complex behaviour is observed for lighter masses. We present an extensive overview of production cross sections and kinetic energies for the complete set of nuclides formed in the spallation of 136Xe by protons at the incident energy of 1 GeV per nucleon. The measurement was performed in inverse kinematics at the FRagment Separator (GSI, Darmstadt). Slightly below the Businaro-Gallone point, 136Xe is the stable nuclide with the largest neutron excess. The kinematic data and cross sections collected in this work for the full nuclide production are a general benchmark for modelling the spallation process in a neutron-rich nuclear system, where fission is characterised by predominantly mass-asymmetric splits., Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures

The spallation residues produced in the bombardment of 56}Fe at 1.5, 1.0, 0.75, 0.5 and 0.3 A GeV on a liquid-hydrogen target have been measured using the reverse kinematics technique and the Fragment Separator at GSI (Darmstadt). This technique has permitted the full identification in charge and mass of all isotopes produced with cross-sections larger than 10^{-2} mb down to Z=8. Their individual production cross-sections and recoil velocities at the five energies are presented. Production cross-sections are compared to previously existing data and to empirical parametric formulas, often used in cosmic-ray astrophysics. The experimental data are also extensively compared to different combinations of intra-nuclear cascade and de-excitation models. It is shown that the yields of the lightest isotopes cannot be accounted for by standard evaporation models. The GEMINI model, which includes an asymmetric fission decay mode, gives an overall good agreement with the data. These experimental data can be directly used for the estimation of composition modifications and damages in materials containing iron in spallation sources. New experimental results on the kinematics and the residue production are obtained for the interactions of 56Fe projectiles with protons and (nat)Ti target nuclei, respectively, at theincident energy of 1 A GeV. The titanium-induced reaction serves as a reference case for multifragmentation. Already in the proton-induced reaction, the characteristics of the isotopic cross sections and the shapes of the velocity spectra of light residues indicate that high thermal energy is deposited in the system during the collision. In the 56Fe+p system the high excitation seems to favour the onset of fast break-up decays dominated by very asymmetric partitions of the disassembling system.
