Wannier90 is an open-source computer program for calculating maximally-localised Wannier functions (MLWFs) from a set of Bloch states. It is interfaced to many widely used electronic-structure codes thanks to its independence from the basis sets representing these Bloch states. In the past few years the development of Wannier90 has transitioned to a community-driven model; this has resulted in a number of new developments that have been recently released in Wannier90 v3.0. In this article we describe these new functionalities, that include the implementation of new features for wannierisation and disentanglement (symmetry-adapted Wannier functions, selectively-localised Wannier functions, selected columns of the density matrix) and the ability to calculate new properties (shift currents and Berry-curvature dipole, and a new interface to many-body perturbation theory); performance improvements, including parallelisation of the core code; enhancements in functionality (support for spinor-valued Wannier functions, more accurate methods to interpolate quantities in the Brillouin zone); improved usability (improved plotting routines, integration with high-throughput automation frameworks), as well as the implementation of modern software engineering practices (unit testing, continuous integration, and automatic source-code documentation). We demonstrate computationally the existence of magnetoelectric multipoles, arising from the second order term in the multipole expansion of a magnetization density in a magnetic field, in noncentrosymmetric magnetic metals. While magnetoelectric multipoles have long been discussed in the context of the magnetoelectric effect in noncentrosymmetric magnetic insulators, they have not previosuly been identified in metallic systems, in which the mobile carriers screen any electrical polarization. Using first-principles density functional calculations we explore three specific systems: First, a conventional centrosymmetric magnetic metal, Fe, in which we break inversion symmetry by introducing a surface, which both generates magnetoelectric monopoles and allows a perpendicular magnetoelectric response. Next, the hypothetical cation-ordered perovskite, SrCaRu$_2$O$_6$, in which we study the interplay between the magnitude of the polar symmetry breaking and that of the magnetic dipoles and multipoles, finding that both scale proportionally to the structural distortion. Finally, we identify a hidden antiferromultipolar order in the noncentrosymmetric, antiferromagnetic metal Ca$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$, and show that, while its competing magnetic phases have similar magnetic dipolar structures, their magnetoelectric multipolar structures are distinctly different, reflecting the strong differences in transport properties., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

The lifetimes of the $2^+_1$, the $2^+_2$ and the $3^-_1$ states of $^{210}$Po have been measured in the $^{208}$Pb($^{12}$C,$^{10}$Be)$^{210}$Po transfer reaction by the Doppler-shift attenuation method. The results for the lifetime of the $2^+_1$ state is about three times shorter than the adopted value. However, the new value still does not allow for consistent description of the properties of the yrast $2^+_1$, $4^+_1$, $6^+_1$, and $8^+_1$ states of $^{210}$Po in the framework of nuclear shell models. The Quasi-particle Phonon Model (QPM) calculations also cannot overcome this problem thus indicating the existence of a peculiarity which is neglected in both theoretical approaches.

Arrays of aligned nanorods oriented perpendicular to a support, which are accessible by top-down lithography or by means of shape-defining hard templates, have received increasing interest as sensor components, components for nanophotonics and nanoelectronics, substrates for tissue engineering, sur-faces having specific adhesive or antiadhesive properties and as surfaces with customized wettability. Agglomeration of the nanorods deteriorates the performance of components based on nanorod arrays. A comprehensive body of literature deals with mechanical failure mechanisms of nanorods and design criteria for mechanically stable nanorod arrays. However, the structural integrity of nanorod arrays is commonly evaluated only visually and qualitatively. We use real-space analysis of microscopic images to quantify the fraction of condensed nanorods in nanorod arrays. We suggest the number of array elements apparent in the micrographs divided by the number of array elements a defect-free array would contain in the same area, referred to as integrity fraction, as a measure of structural array integrity. Reproducible procedures to determine the imaged number of array elements are introduced. Thus, quantitative comparisons of different nanorod arrays, or of one nanorod array at different stages of its use, are possible. Structural integrities of identical nanorod arrays differing only in the length of the nanorods are exemplarily analyzed.

We present a formalism to calculate the macroscopic magnetoelectric monopolization from first principles within the density functional theory framework. An expression for the monopolization in the case of insulating collinear magnetism is derived first in terms of spin-polarized Wannier functions then recast as a Berry phase. We propose an extension to the general, non-collinear case which we implement computationally in the Wannier function form and use to calculate the magnetoelectric monopolizations of LiMnPO$_4$ and Cr$_2$O$_3$. We find that, while the former is well approximated by a summation over the formal local spin moments, the latter shows significant deviations from this approximation. We suggest that equating the Berry phase value with a sum over local moments provides an unambiguous route to defining the size of the local magnetic moment in magnetoelectric antiferromagnets containing only one type of magnetic ion., Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure

The electromagnetic structure of $^{140}$Sm was studied in a low-energy Coulomb excitation experiment with a radioactive ion beam from the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN. The $2^+$ and $4^+$ states of the ground-state band and a second $2^+$ state were populated by multi-step excitation. The analysis of the differential Coulomb excitation cross sections yielded reduced transition probabilities between all observed states and the spectroscopic quadrupole moment for the $2_1^+$ state. The experimental results are compared to large-scale shell model calculations and beyond-mean-field calculations based on the Gogny D1S interaction with a five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian formalism. Simpler geometric and algebraic models are also employed to interpret the experimental data. The results indicate that $^{140}$Sm shows considerable $\gamma$ softness, but in contrast to earlier speculation no signs of shape coexistence at low excitation energy. We introduce a mechanism in which coupling between fluctuating spin magnetic dipole moments and polar optical phonons leads to a non-zero ferroic ordering of quasi-static magnetoelectric multipoles. Using first-principles calculations within the LSDA$+U$ method of density functional theory, we calculate the magnitude of the effect for the prototypical cuprate superconductor, HgBa$_2$CuO$_4$. We show that our proposed mechanism is consistent, to our knowledge, with all experimental data for the onset of the pseudo-gap phase and therefore propose the quasi-static magnetoelectric multipole as a possible pseudo-gap order parameter. Finally, we show that our mechanism embraces some key aspects of previous theoretical models, in particular the description of the pseudo-gap phase in terms of orbital currents., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures
