The very shallow marine basin of Puck Lagoon in the southern Baltic Sea, on the Northern coast of Poland, hosts valuable benthic habitats and cultural heritage sites. These include, among others, protected Zostera marina meadows, one of the Baltic's major medieval harbours, a ship graveyard, and likely other submerged features that are yet to be discovered. Prior to this project, no comprehensive high-resolution remote sensing data were available for this area. This article describes the first Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) derived from a combination of airborne bathymetric LiDAR, multibeam echosounder, airborne photogrammetry and satellite imagery. These datasets also include multibeam echosounder backscatter and LiDAR intensity, allowing determination of the character and properties of the seafloor. Combined, these datasets are a vital resource for assessing and understanding seafloor morphology, benthic habitats, cultural heritage, and submerged landscapes. Given the significance of Puck Lagoon's hydrographical, ecological, geological, and archaeological environs, the high-resolution bathymetry, acquired by our project, can provide the foundation for sustainable management and informed decision-making for this area of interest.

Scaling model sizes to scale performance has worked remarkably well for the current large language models paradigm. The research and empirical findings of various scaling studies led to novel scaling results and laws that guides subsequent research. High training costs for contemporary scales of data and models result in a lack of thorough understanding of how to tune and arrive at such training setups. One direction to ameliorate the cost of pretraining large models is to warmstart the large-scale training from smaller models that are cheaper to tune. In this work, we attempt to understand if the behavior of optimal hyperparameters can be retained under warmstarting for scaling. We explore simple operations that allow the application of theoretically motivated methods of zero-shot transfer of optimal hyperparameters using {\mu}Transfer. We investigate the aspects that contribute to the speedup in convergence and the preservation of stable training dynamics under warmstarting with {\mu}Transfer. We find that shrinking smaller model weights, zero-padding, and perturbing the resulting larger model with scaled initialization from {\mu}P enables effective warmstarting of $\mut{}$.

Finetuning is a common practice widespread across different communities to adapt pretrained models to particular tasks. Text classification is one of these tasks for which many pretrained models are available. On the other hand, ensembles of neural networks are typically used to boost performance and provide reliable uncertainty estimates. However, ensembling pretrained models for text classification is not a well-studied avenue. In this paper, we present a metadataset with predictions from five large finetuned models on six datasets, and report results of different ensembling strategies from these predictions. Ensemble methods are known for enhancing the accuracy and robustness of machine learning models by combining multiple base learners. However, standard approaches like greedy or random ensembles often fall short, as they assume a constant weight across samples for the ensemble members. This can limit expressiveness and hinder performance when aggregating the ensemble predictions. In this study, we explore employing neural networks as ensemble methods, emphasizing the significance of dynamic ensembling to leverage diverse model predictions adaptively. Motivated by the risk of learning low-diversity ensembles, we propose regularizing the model by randomly dropping base model predictions during the training. We demonstrate this approach lower bounds the diversity within the ensemble, reducing overfitting and improving generalization capabilities. The datasets of most image quality assessment studies contain ratings on a categorical scale with five levels, from bad (1) to excellent (5). For each stimulus, the number of ratings from 1 to 5 is summarized and given in the form of the mean opinion score. In this study, we investigate families of multinomial probability distributions parameterized by mean and variance that are used to fit the empirical rating distributions. To this end, we consider quantized metric models based on continuous distributions that model perceived stimulus quality on a latent scale. The probabilities for the rating categories are determined by quantizing the corresponding random variables using threshold values. Furthermore, we introduce a novel discrete maximum entropy distribution for a given mean and variance. We compare the performance of these models and the state of the art given by the generalized score distribution for two large data sets, KonIQ-10k and VQEG HDTV. Given an input distribution of ratings, our fitted two-parameter models predict unseen ratings better than the empirical distribution. In contrast to empirical ACR distributions and their discrete models, our continuous models can provide fine-grained estimates of quantiles of quality of experience that are relevant to service providers to satisfy a target fraction of the user population., Comment: 5 pages

Accurate, detailed, and high-frequent bathymetry, coupled with complex semantic content, is crucial for the undermapped shallow seabed areas facing intense climatological and anthropogenic pressures. Current methods exploiting remote sensing images to derive bathymetry or seabed classes mainly exploit non-open data. This lack of openly accessible benchmark archives prevents the wider use of deep learning methods in such applications. To address this issue, in this paper we present the MagicBathyNet, which is a benchmark dataset made up of image patches of Sentinel2, SPOT-6 and aerial imagery, bathymetry in raster format and annotations of seabed classes. MagicBathyNet is then exploited to benchmark state-of-the-art methods in learning-based bathymetry and pixel-based classification. Speech is a natural interface for humans to interact with robots. Yet, aligning a robot's voice to its appearance is challenging due to the rich vocabulary of both modalities. Previous research has explored a few labels to describe robots and tested them on a limited number of robots and existing voices. Here, we develop a robot-voice creation tool followed by large-scale behavioral human experiments (N=2,505). First, participants collectively tune robotic voices to match 175 robot images using an adaptive human-in-the-loop pipeline. Then, participants describe their impression of the robot or their matched voice using another human-in-the-loop paradigm for open-ended labeling. The elicited taxonomy is then used to rate robot attributes and to predict the best voice for an unseen robot. Hyperparameters of Deep Learning (DL) pipelines are crucial for their downstream performance. While a large number of methods for Hyperparameter Optimization (HPO) have been developed, their incurred costs are often untenable for modern DL. Consequently, manual experimentation is still the most prevalent approach to optimize hyperparameters, relying on the researcher's intuition, domain knowledge, and cheap preliminary explorations. To resolve this misalignment between HPO algorithms and DL researchers, we propose PriorBand, an HPO algorithm tailored to DL, able to utilize both expert beliefs and cheap proxy tasks. Empirically, we demonstrate PriorBand's efficiency across a range of DL benchmarks and show its gains under informative expert input and robustness against poor expert beliefs

Hyperparameter optimization is an important subfield of machine learning that focuses on tuning the hyperparameters of a chosen algorithm to achieve peak performance. Recently, there has been a stream of methods that tackle the issue of hyperparameter optimization, however, most of the methods do not exploit the dominant power law nature of learning curves for Bayesian optimization. In this work, we propose Deep Power Laws (DPL), an ensemble of neural network models conditioned to yield predictions that follow a power-law scaling pattern. Our method dynamically decides which configurations to pause and train incrementally by making use of gray-box evaluations. We compare our method against 7 state-of-the-art competitors on 3 benchmarks related to tabular, image, and NLP datasets covering 59 diverse tasks. Modern video streaming services require quality assurance of the presented audiovisual material. Quality assurance mechanisms allow streaming platforms to provide quality levels that are considered sufficient to yield user satisfaction, with the least possible amount of data transferred. A variety of measures and approaches have been developed to control video quality, e.g., by adapting it to network conditions. These include objective matrices of the quality and thresholds identified by means of subjective perceptual judgments. The former group of matrices has recently gained the attention of (multi)media researchers. They call this area of study ``Quality of Experience'' (QoE). In this paper, we present a review of QoE's theoretical models together with a discussion of their properties and implications for the field. We argue that most of them represent the bottom-up approach to modeling. Such models focus on describing as many variables as possible, but with a limited ability to investigate the causal relationship between them; therefore, the applicability of the findings in practice is limited. To advance the field, we therefore propose a structural, top-down model of video QoE that describes causal relationships among variables. In this paper we reproduce experimental results presented in our earlier work titled "Describing Subjective Experiment Consistency by $p$-Value P-P Plot" that was presented in the course of the 28th ACM International Conference on Multimedia. The paper aims at verifying the soundness of our prior results and helping others understand our software framework. We present artifacts that help reproduce tables, figures and all the data derived from raw subjective responses that were included in our earlier work. Using the artifacts we show that our results are reproducible. A class of discrete probability distributions contains distributions with limited support. A typical example is some variant of a Likert scale, with response mapped to either the $\{1, 2, \ldots, 5\}$ or $\{-3, -2, \ldots, 2, 3\}$ set. An interesting subclass of discrete distributions with finite support are distributions limited to two parameters and having no more than one change in probability monotonicity. The main contribution of this paper is to propose a family of distributions fitting the above description, which we call the Generalised Score Distribution (GSD) class. The proposed GSD class covers the whole set of possible mean and variances, for any fixed and finite support. Furthermore, the GSD class can be treated as an underdispersed continuation of a reparametrized beta-binomial distribution. The GSD class parameters are intuitive and can be easily estimated by the method of moments. We also offer a Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) algorithm for the GSD class and evidence that the class properly describes response distributions coming from 24 Multimedia Quality Assessment experiments. At last, we show that the GSD class can be represented as a sum of dichotomous zero-one random variables, which points to an interesting interpretation of the class., Comment: All authors contributed equally. 21 pages, 15 figures

The notion of experiment precision quantifies the variance of user ratings in a subjective experiment. Although there exist measures that assess subjective experiment precision, there are no systematic analyses of these measures available in the literature. To the best of our knowledge, there is also no systematic framework in the Multimedia Quality Assessment field for comparing subjective experiments in terms of their precision. Therefore, the main idea of this paper is to propose a framework for comparing subjective experiments in the field of MQA based on appropriate experiment precision measures. We present three experiment precision measures and three related experiment precision comparison methods. We systematically analyse the performance of the measures and methods proposed. We do so both through a simulation study (varying user rating variance and bias) and by using data from four real-world Quality of Experience (QoE) subjective experiments. In the simulation study we focus on crowdsourcing QoE experiments, since they are known to generate ratings with higher variance and bias, when compared to traditional subjective experiment methodologies. We conclude that our proposed measures and related comparison methods properly capture experiment precision (both when tested on simulated and real-world data). One of the measures also proves capable of dealing with even significantly biased responses. We believe our experiment precision assessment framework will help compare different subjective experiment methodologies. Subjective responses from Multimedia Quality Assessment (MQA) experiments are conventionally analysed with methods not suitable for the data type these responses represent. Furthermore, obtaining subjective responses is resource intensive. A method allowing reuse of existing responses would be thus beneficial. Applying improper data analysis methods leads to difficult to interpret results. This encourages drawing erroneous conclusions. Building upon existing subjective responses is resource friendly and helps develop machine learning (ML) based visual quality predictors. We show that using a discrete model for analysis of responses from MQA subjective experiments is feasible. We indicate that our proposed Generalised Score Distribution (GSD) properly describes response distributions observed in typical MQA experiments. We highlight interpretability of GSD parameters and indicate that the GSD outperforms the approach based on sample empirical distribution when it comes to bootstrapping. We evidence that the GSD outcompetes the state-of-the-art model both in terms of goodness-of-fit and bootstrapping capabilities. To do all of that we analyse more than one million subjective responses from more than 30 subjective experiments. We present the first analytic ${\cal O}(\alpha_s)$-computation at twist-$1$,$2$ of the $\bar B_{u,d,s} \to \gamma$ form factors within the framework of sum rules on the light-cone. These form factors describe the charged decay $\bar B_u \to \gamma \ell^- \bar{\nu}$, contribute to the flavour changing neutral currents $\bar B_{d,s} \to \gamma \ell^+ \ell^-$ and serve as inputs to more complicated processes. We provide a fit in terms of a $z$-expansion with correlation matrix and extrapolate the form factors to the kinematic endpoint by using the $g_{BB^*\gamma}$ couplings as a constraint. Analytic results are available in terms of multiple polylogarithms as ancillary files. We give binned predictions for the $\bar B_u \to \gamma \ell^- \bar{\nu}$ branching ratio along with the associated correlation matrix. By comparing with three SCET-computations we extract the inverse moment $B$-meson distribution amplitude parameter $\lambda_B = 360 (110) \text{MeV}$. The uncertainty thereof could be improved by a more dedicated analysis. In passing, we extend the photon distribution amplitude to include quark mass corrections with a prescription for the magnetic vacuum susceptibility, $\chi_q$, compatible with the twist-expansion. Recent studies have shown that it is possible to characterize subject bias and variance in subjective assessment tests. Apparent differences among subjects can, for the most part, be explained by random factors. Building on that theory, we propose a subjective test design where three to four team members each rate the stimuli multiple times. The results are comparable to a high performing objective metric. We calculate the coupling between a vector resonance and two Goldstone bosons in $SU(2)$ gauge theory with $N_f=2$ Dirac fermions in the fundamental representation. The considered theory can be used to construct a minimal Composite Higgs models. The coupling is related to the width of the vector resonance and we determine it by simulating the scattering of two Goldstone bosons where the resonance is produced. The resulting coupling is $g_{\rm{VPP}}=7.8\pm 0.6$, not far from $g_{\rho\pi \pi}\simeq 6$ in QCD. This is the first lattice calculation of the resonance properties for a minimal UV completion. This coupling controls the production cross section of the lightest expected resonance at the LHC and enters into other tests of the Standard Model, from Vector Boson Fusion to electroweak precision tests. Our prediction is crucial to constrain the model using lattice input and for understanding the behavior of the vector meson production cross section as a function of the underlying gauge theory. We also extract the coupling $g_{\rm{VPP}}^{\rm{KSRF}} =9.4 \pm 0.6$ assuming the vector-dominance and find that this phenomenological estimate slightly overestimates the value of the coupling., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures - v2: minor changes, version accepted for publication

All datasets contain some biases, often unintentional, due to how they were acquired and annotated. These biases distort machine-learning models' performance, creating spurious correlations that the models can unfairly exploit, or, contrarily destroying clear correlations that the models could learn. With the popularity of deep learning models, automated skin lesion analysis is starting to play an essential role in the early detection of Melanoma. The ISIC Archive is one of the most used skin lesion sources to benchmark deep learning-based tools. Bissoto et al. experimented with different bounding-box based masks and showed that deep learning models could classify skin lesion images without clinically meaningful information in the input data. Their findings seem confounding since the ablated regions (random rectangular boxes) are not significant. The shape of the lesion is a crucial factor in the clinical characterization of a skin lesion. In that context, we performed a set of experiments that generate shape-preserving masks instead of rectangular bounding-box based masks. A deep learning model trained on these shape-preserving masked images does not outperform models trained on images without clinically meaningful information. That strongly suggests spurious correlations guiding the models. We propose use of general adversarial network (GAN) to mitigate the underlying bias.

There are phenomena that cannot be measured without subjective testing. However, subjective testing is a complex issue with many influencing factors. These interplay to yield either precise or incorrect results. Researchers require a tool to classify results of subjective experiment as either consistent or inconsistent. This is necessary in order to decide whether to treat the gathered scores as quality ground truth data. Knowing if subjective scores can be trusted is key to drawing valid conclusions and building functional tools based on those scores (e.g., algorithms assessing the perceived quality of multimedia materials). We provide a tool to classify subjective experiment (and all its results) as either consistent or inconsistent. Additionally, the tool identifies stimuli having irregular score distribution. The approach is based on treating subjective scores as a random variable coming from the discrete Generalized Score Distribution (GSD). The GSD, in combination with a bootstrapped G-test of goodness-of-fit, allows to construct $p$-value P-P plot that visualizes experiment's consistency. The tool safeguards researchers from using inconsistent subjective data. In this way, it makes sure that conclusions they draw and tools they build are more precise and trustworthy. In a subjective experiment to evaluate the perceptual audiovisual quality of multimedia and television services, raw opinion scores collected from test subjects are often noisy and unreliable. To produce the final mean opinion scores (MOS), recommendations such as ITU-R BT.500, ITU-T P.910 and ITU-T P.913 standardize post-test screening procedures to clean up the raw opinion scores, using techniques such as subject outlier rejection and bias removal. In this paper, we analyze the prior standardized techniques to demonstrate their weaknesses. As an alternative, we propose a simple model to account for two of the most dominant behaviors of subject inaccuracy: bias and inconsistency. We further show that this model can also effectively deal with inattentive subjects that give random scores. We propose to use maximum likelihood estimation to jointly solve the model parameters, and present two numeric solvers: the first based on the Newton-Raphson method, and the second based on an alternating projection (AP). We show that the AP solver generalizes the ITU-T P.913 post-test screening procedure by weighing a subject's contribution to the true quality score by her consistency (thus, the quality scores estimated can be interpreted as bias-subtracted consistency-weighted MOS). We compare the proposed methods with the standardized techniques using real datasets and synthetic simulations, and demonstrate that the proposed methods are the most valuable when the test conditions are challenging (for example, crowdsourcing and cross-lab studies), offering advantages such as better model-data fit, tighter confidence intervals, better robustness against subject outliers, the absence of hard coded parameters and thresholds, and auxiliary information on test subjects. Composite Higgs models are promising candidate models to address the long-standing naturalness problem in the Standard Model. Among them, the most minimal one is the SU(2) with 2 flavours of fermions in the fundamental representation of the gauge group. An important prediction in these models is the existence of resonance spectrum in vector boson scattering. Here we study the lowest such resonance, which is the equivalent of rho resonance in QCD. In order to reach (sub-)per cent level precision in lattice calculations of the hadronic vacuum polarisation, isospin breaking corrections must be included. This requires introducing QED on the lattice, and the associated finite-size effects are potentially large due to the absence of a mass gap. This means that the finite-size effects scale as an inverse polynomial in $L$ rather than being exponentially suppressed. Considering the $\mathcal{O}(\alpha)$ corrected hadronic vacuum polarisation in QED$_{\mathrm{L}}$ with scalar QED as an effective theory, we show that the first possible term, which is of order $1/L^{2}$, vanishes identically so that the finite-size effects start at order $1/L^{3}$. This cancellation is understood from the neutrality of the currents involved, and we show that this cancellation is universal by also including form factors for the pions. A class of discrete probability distributions contains distributions with limited support, i.e. possible argument values are limited to a set of numbers (typically consecutive). Examples of such data are results from subjective experiments utilizing the Absolute Category Rating (ACR) technique, where possible answers (argument values) are $\{1, 2, \cdots, 5\}$ or typical Likert scale $\{-3, -2, \cdots, 3\}$. An interesting subclass of those distributions are distributions limited to two parameters: describing the mean value and the spread of the answers, and having no more than one change in the probability monotonicity. In this paper we propose a general distribution passing those limitations called Generalized Score Distribution (GSD). The proposed GSD covers all spreads of the answers, from very small, given by the Bernoulli distribution, to the maximum given by a Beta Binomial distribution. We also show that GSD correctly describes subjective experiments scores from video quality evaluations with probability of 99.7\%. In order to reduce the current hadronic uncertainties in the theory prediction for the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, lattice calculations need to reach sub-percent accuracy on the hadronic-vacuum-polarization contribution. This requires the inclusion of $\mathcal{O}(\alpha)$ electromagnetic corrections. The inclusion of electromagnetic interactions in lattice simulations is known to generate potentially large finite-size effects suppressed only by powers of the inverse spatial extent. In this paper we derive an analytic expression for the $\mathrm{QED}_{\mathrm{L}}$ finite-volume corrections to the two-pion contribution to the hadronic vacuum polarization at next-to-leading order in the electromagnetic coupling in scalar QED. The leading term is found to be of order $1/L^{3}$ where $L$ is the spatial extent. A $1/L^{2}$ term is absent since the current is neutral and a photon far away thus sees no charge and we show that this result is universal. Our analytical results agree with results from the numerical evaluation of loop integrals as well as simulations of lattice scalar $U(1)$ gauge theory with stochastically generated photon fields. In the latter case the agreement is up to exponentially suppressed finite-volume effects. For completeness we also calculate the hadronic vacuum polarization in infinite volume using a basis of 2-loop master integrals., Comment: 42 pages, 11 figures

It is believed that consistent notation helps the research community in many ways. First and foremost, it provides a consistent interface of communication. Subjective experiments described according to uniform rules are easier to understand and analyze. Additionally, a comparison of various results is less complicated. In this publication we describe notation proposed by VQEG (Video Quality Expert Group) working group SAM (Statistical Analysis and Methods).

We discuss an alternate scheme, or a 'line of constant physics', which can be used when computing isospin breaking corrections to hadronic quantities. We present preliminary results on the lattice simulation of an SU(2) gauge theory with two fermion flavors and one strongly interacting scalar field, all in the fundamental representation of SU(2). The motivation for this study comes from the recent proposal of "fundamental" partial compositeness models featuring strongly interacting scalar fields in addition to fermions. Here we describe the lattice setup for our study of this class of models and a first exploration of the lattice phase diagram. In particular we then investigate how the presence of a strongly coupled scalar field affects the properties of light meson resonances previously obtained for the SU(2) model.

We present a non perturbative study of SU(2) gauge theory with two fundamental Dirac flavours. This theory provides a minimal template which is ideal for a wide class of Standard Model extensions featuring novel strong dynamics, such as a minimal realization of composite Higgs models. We compute the leading QED corrections to the hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) of the photon, relevant for the determination of leptonic anomalous magnetic moments, $a_\ell$. We work in the electroquenched approximation and use dynamical QCD configurations generated by the CLS initiative with two degenerate flavors of non-perturbatively O($a$)-improved Wilson fermions. We consider QED$_{\rm L}$ and QED$_{\rm M}$ to deal with the finite-volume zero modes. We compare results for the Wilson loops with exact analytical determinations. In addition we make sure that the volumes and photon masses used in QED$_{\rm M}$ are such that the correct dispersion relation is reproduced by the energy levels extracted from the charged pions two-point functions. Finally we compare results for pion masses and the HVP between QED$_{\rm L}$ and QED$_{\rm M}$. We determine the phase diagram of complete asymptotically free SU($N_c$) gauge theories featuring $N_s$ complex scalars and $N_f$ Dirac quarks transforming according to the fundamental representation of the gauge group. The analysis is performed at the maximum known order in perturbation theory. We unveil a very rich dynamics and associated phase structure. Intriguingly we discover that the complete asymptotically free conditions guarantee that the infrared dynamics displays long distance conformality, and in a regime when perturbation theory is applicable. We conclude our analysis by determining the quantum corrected potential of the theory and summarising the possible patterns of radiative symmetry breaking. These theories are of potential phenomenological interest as either elementary or composite ultraviolet finite extensions of the Standard Model., Comment: 37 pages, 16 figures, including several appendices

SU(2) gauge theories with two quark flavours in the fundamental representation are among the most promising theories of composite dynamics describing the electroweak sector. Three out of five Goldstone bosons in these models become the longitudinal components of the W and Z bosons giving them mass. Like in QCD, we expect a spectrum of excitations which appear as resonances in vector boson scattering, in particular the vector resonance corresponding to the rho-meson in QCD. In this talk I will present the preliminary results of the first calculation of the rho-meson decay width in this theory, which is analogous to rho to two pions decay calculation in QCD. The results presented were calculated in a moving frame with total momentum (0,0,1) on two ensembles. We calculate two- and three-body decays of the (lightest) vector glueball into (pseudo)scalar, (axial-)vector, as well as pseudovector and excited vector mesons\textbf{ }in the framework of a model of QCD. While absolute values of widths cannot be predicted because the corresponding coupling constants are unknown, some interesting branching ratios can be evaluated\textbf{ }by setting the mass of the yet hypothetical vector glueball to $3.8$ GeV as predicted by quenched Lattice QCD\textbf{.} We find that the decay mode $\omega\pi\pi$ should be one of the largest (both through the decay chain $\mathcal{O}\rightarrow b_{1}\pi\rightarrow$ $\omega\pi\pi$ and through the direct coupling $\mathcal{O}\rightarrow\omega\pi\pi$)$.$ Similarly, the (direct and indirect) decay into $\pi KK^{\ast}(892)$ is sizable. Moreover, the decays into $\rho\pi$ and $K^{\ast}(892)K$ are, although subleading, possible and could play a role in explaining the $\rho\pi$ puzzle of the charmonium state $\psi(2S)$ thank to a (small) mixing with the vector glueball. The vector glueball can be directly formed at the ongoing BESIII experiment as well as at the future PANDA experiment at the FAIR facility. If the width is sufficiently small ($\lesssim100$ MeV) it should not escape future detection. It should be stressed that the employed model is based on some inputs and simplifying assumptions: the value of glueball mass (at present, the quenched lattice value is used), the lack of mixing of the glueball with other quarkonium states, and the use of few interaction terms. It then represents a first step toward the identification of the main decay channels of the vector glueball, but shall be improved when corresponding experimental candidates and/or new lattice results will be available., Comment: 17 pages, 6 tables. We present new results for the amplitude $A_2$ for a kaon to decay into two pions with isospin $I=2$: Re$A_2 = 1.50(4)_\mathrm{stat}(14)_\mathrm{syst}\times 10^{-8}$ GeV; Im$A_2 = -6.99(20)_\mathrm{stat}(84)_\mathrm{syst}\times 10^{-13}$ GeV. These results were obtained from two ensembles generated at physical quark masses (in the isospin limit) with inverse lattice spacings $a^{-1}=1.728(4)$ GeV and $2.358(7)$ GeV. We are therefore able to perform a continuum extrapolation and hence largely to remove the dominant systematic uncertainty from our earlier results, that due to lattice artefacts. The only previous lattice computation of $K\to\pi\pi$ decays at physical kinematics was performed using an ensemble at a single, rather coarse, value of the lattice spacing ($a^{-1}\simeq 1.37(1)$ GeV). We confirm the observation that there is a significant cancellation between the two dominant contributions to Re$A_2$ which we suggest is an important ingredient in understanding the $\Delta I=1/2$ rule, Re$A_0$/Re$A_2\simeq 22.5$, where the subscript denotes the total isospin of the two-pion final state. Our result for $A_2$ implies that the electroweak penguin contribution to $\epsilon^\prime/\epsilon$ is Re($\epsilon^\prime/\epsilon)_\textrm{EWP}=-(6.6\pm 1.0)\times 10^{-4}$., Comment: 46 pages, 12 figures

We present results for several light hadronic quantities ($f_\pi$, $f_K$, $B_K$, $m_{ud}$, $m_s$, $t_0^{1/2}$, $w_0$) obtained from simulations of 2+1 flavor domain wall lattice QCD with large physical volumes and nearly-physical pion masses at two lattice spacings. We perform a short, O(3)%, extrapolation in pion mass to the physical values by combining our new data in a simultaneous chiral/continuum `global fit' with a number of other ensembles with heavier pion masses. We use the physical values of $m_\pi$, $m_K$ and $m_\Omega$ to determine the two quark masses and the scale - all other quantities are outputs from our simulations. We obtain results with sub-percent statistical errors and negligible chiral and finite-volume systematics for these light hadronic quantities, including: $f_\pi$ = 130.2(9) MeV; $f_K$ = 155.5(8) MeV; the average up/down quark mass and strange quark mass in the $\bar {\rm MS}$ scheme at 3 GeV, 2.997(49) and 81.64(1.17) MeV respectively; and the neutral kaon mixing parameter, $B_K$, in the RGI scheme, 0.750(15) and the $\bar{\rm MS}$ scheme at 3 GeV, 0.530(11)., Comment: 131 pages, 30 figures. We study the three-flavor chirally and dilatation invariant extended Linear Sigma Model with (pseudo)scalar and (axial-)vector mesons as well as a scalar dilaton field whose excitations are interpreted as a glueball. The model successfully describes masses and decay widths of quark-antiquark mesons in the low-energy region up to 1.6 GeV. Here we study in detail the vacuum properties of the scalar-isoscalar channel and find that (i) a narrow glueball is only possible if the vacuum expectation value of the dilaton field is (at tree-level) quite large (i.e., larger than what lattice QCD and QCD sum rules suggest) and (ii) that only solutions in which f0(1710) is predominantly a glueball are found. Moreover, the resonance f0(1370) turns out to be mainly nonstrange quark-antiquark state and thus corresponds to the chiral partner of the pion, while the resonance f0(1500) is mainly strange quark-antiquark state., Comment: 16 pages, 4 tables, 1 figure

In the framework of the extended Linear Sigma Model (eLSM) we investigate the masses and decays of the three scalar-isoscalar resonances $f_{0}(1370)$, $f_{0}(1500)$ and $f_{0}(1710)$. The degrees of freedom of the eLSM are (pseudo)scalars and (axial)vectors as well as the scalar glueball. Although still preliminary, present results, based on the physical masses of the above mentioned resonances, show that $f_{0}(1710)$ is the predominantly glueball state. We review the status of recent calculations by the RBC-UKQCD collaboration of the complex amplitude $A_2$, corresponding to the decay of a kaon to a two pion state with total isospin 2. In particular, we present preliminary results from two new ensembles: $48^3 \times 96$ with $a^{-1}=1.73$ GeV and $64^3 \times 128$ with $a^{-1}=2.3$ GeV, both at physical kinematics. Both ensembles were generated Iwasaki gauge action and domain wall fermion action with 2+1 flavours. These results, in comparison to our earlier ones on a $32^3$ DSDR lattice with $a^{-1}=1.36$ GeV, enable us to significantly reduce the discretization errors. Using the U(3)R x U(3)L extended Linear Sigma Model with the ordinary (pseudo)scalar and (axial)vector mesons as well as a scalar glueball, we study the vacuum phenomenology of the scalar-isoscalar resonances f0(1370), f0(1500) and f0(1710). We consider a $N_f=3$ chiral Lagrangian which describes the interaction between the pseudoscalar glueball, $J^{PC}=0^{-+}$, and scalar and pseudoscalar mesons. We calculate the decay widths of the pseudoscalar glueball, where we fixed its mass to 2.6 GeV, as predicted by lattice QCD simulations, and take a closer look in the scalar-isoscalar decaying channel. There has been much speculation as to the origin of the \Delta I = 1/2 rule (Re A_0/Re A_2 \simeq 22.5). We find that the two dominant contributions to the \Delta I=3/2, K \to \pi \pi{} correlation functions have opposite signs leading to a significant cancellation. This partial cancellation occurs in our computation of Re A_2 with physical quark masses and kinematics (where we reproduce the experimental value of A_2) and also for heavier pions at threshold. For Re A_0, although we do not have results at physical kinematics, we do have results for pions at zero-momentum with m_\pi{} \simeq 420 MeV (Re A_0/Re A_2=9.1(2.1)) and m_\pi{} \simeq 330 MeV (Re A_0/Re A_2=12.0(1.7)). The contributions which partially cancel in Re A_2 are also the largest ones in Re A_0, but now they have the same sign and so enhance this amplitude. The emerging explanation of the \Delta I=1/2 rule is a combination of the perturbative running to scales of O(2 GeV), a relative suppression of Re A_2 through the cancellation of the two dominant contributions and the corresponding enhancement of Re A_0. We study a chiral Lagrangian which describes the two- and three-body decays of a pseudoscalar glueball into scalar and pseudoscalar mesons. The various branching ratios are a parameter-free prediction of our approach. We compute the decay channels for a pseudoscalar glueball with a mass of 2.6 GeV, as predicted by Lattice QCD in the quenched approximation, which is in the reach of the PANDA experiment at the upcoming FAIR facility. In the framework of the $U(2)_{R}\times U(2)_{L}$ symmetric linear sigma model with (axial)vector mesons generalized by including a dilaton field we study the phenomenology of the scalar-isoscalar resonances below 2 GeV. It turns out that, in our favoured scenario, the resonance $f_{0}(1370)$ is predominantly a $\bar{q}q$ state and $f_{0}(1500)$ is predominantly a glueball state. Two observational campaigns were carried out during the eclipses of EE Cep in 2003 and 2008/9 to verify whether the eclipsing body in the system is indeed a dark disk and to understand the observed changes in the depth and durations of the eclipses. Multicolour photometric data and spectroscopic observations at both low and high resolution were collected. We numerically modelled the variations in brightness and colour during the eclipses. We tested models with different disk structure. We considered the possibility of disk precession. The complete set of observational data collected during the last three eclipses are made available to the astronomical community. Two blue maxima in the colour indices were detected during these two eclipses, one before and one after the photometric minimum. The first (stronger) blue maximum is simultaneous with a "bump" that is very clear in all the UBVRI light curves. Variations in the spectral line profiles seem to be recurrent during each cycle. NaI lines always show at least three absorption components during the eclipse minimum and strong absorption is superimposed on the H_alpha emission. These observations confirm that the eclipsing object in EE Cep system is indeed a dark, dusty disk around a low luminosity object. The primary appears to be a rapidly rotating Be star that is strongly darkened at the equator and brightened at the poles. Some of the conclusions of this work require verification in future studies: (i) a complex, possibly multi-ring structure of the disk in EE Cep; (ii) our explanation of the "bump" observed during the last two eclipses in terms of the different times of obscuration of the hot polar regions of the Be star by the disk; and (iii) our suggested period of the disk precession (~11-12 P_orb) and predicted depth of about 2 mag the forthcoming eclipse in 2014., Comment: 43 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present a two-flavour linear sigma model with global chiral symmetry and (axial-)vector mesons as well as an additional glueball degree of freedom. We study the structure of the well-established scalar resonances f0(1370) and f0(1500): by a fit to experimentally known decay widths we find that f0(1370) is predominantly a \bar{q}q state and f0(1500) is predominantly a glueball state. The overall phenomenology of these two resonances can be well described. Other assignments for our mixed quarkonium-glueball states are also tested, but turn out to be in worse agreement with the phenomenology. We present UBVRI photometry of three symbiotic stars ZZ CMi, TX CVn and AG Peg carried out from 1997 to 2008 in Piwnice Observatory near Torun. To search orbital periods of these stars Fourier analysis was used. For two of them, TX CVn and AG Peg, we have confirmed the earlier known periods. For ZZ CMi we found a relatively short period 218.59 days. Assuming, that the orbital period is twice longer (P=437.18 days), the double sine wave in the light curve can be interpreted by ellipsoidal effect., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, Conference: Interacting Binaries: Accretion and Synchronization

We present our multicolour photometric data of the primary and secondary eclipses of OW Gem that took place in 1995, 2002, and 2006, as well as the new radial-velocity data collected since 1993 by R. F. Griffin and A. Duquennoy. The Wilson-Devinney code was used for the simultaneous solution of both photometric and spectroscopic data. A complete set of orbital and physical parameters of the components was obtained. The pair of values, eccentricity e=0.5286 and argument of periastron omega=140.73 degree, give better compatibility of the moment of the secondary minimum with the observations compared to previous estimates.
