The CHIPS R&D project focuses on development of low-cost water Cherenkov neutrino detectors through novel design strategies and resourceful engineering. This work presents an end-to-end DAQ solution intended for a recent 5 kt CHIPS prototype, which is largely based on affordable mass-produced components. Much like the detector itself, the presented instrumentation is composed of modular arrays that can be scaled up and easily serviced. A single such array can carry up to 30 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) accompanied by electronics that generate high voltage in-situ and deliver time resolution of up to 0.69 ns. In addition, the technology is compatible with the White Rabbit timing system, which can synchronize its elements to within 100 ps. While deployment issues did not permit the presented DAQ system to operate beyond initial evaluation, the presented hardware and software successfully passed numerous commissioning tests that demonstrated their viability for use in a large-scale neutrino detector, instrumented with thousands of PMTs., Comment: 30 pages, 28 figures, submitted to MDPI Applied Sciences, Special Issue: Advanced Neutrino Detector Development and Application

Energy sustainability and interconnectivity are the two main pillars on which cutting-edge architecture is based and require the realisation of energy and intelligent devices that can be fully integrated into buildings, capable of meeting stringent regulatory requirements and operating in real-world conditions. Luminescent solar concentrators, particularly those based on near-infrared emitting reabsorption-free quantum dots, are considered good candidates for the realisation of semi-transparent photovoltaic glazing, but despite important advances in optical property engineering strategies, studies of finished devices suitable for real-world operation are still lacking. In this paper, we demonstrate the first example of a fully assembled quantum dot luminescent solar concentrator-based photovoltaic glazing that meets all international standards for photovoltaic and building elements. We also show that these devices are capable of functioning as efficient Visible Light Communication (VLC) receivers even under full sunlight, thus combining energy and wireless connectivity functions in a realistic solution for smart, sustainable buildings.

CHIPS (CHerenkov detectors In mine PitS) was a prototype large-scale water Cherenkov detector located in northern Minnesota. The main aim of the R&D project was to demonstrate that construction costs of neutrino oscillation detectors could be reduced by at least an order of magnitude compared to other equivalent experiments. This article presents design features of the CHIPS detector along with details of the implementation and deployment of the prototype. While issues during and after the deployment of the detector prevented data taking, a number of key concepts and designs were successfully demonstrated.

It is known that, for the algebra of functions on a Kleinian singularity, the parameter space of deformations and the parameter space of quantizations coincide. We prove that, for a Kleinian singularity of type $\mathbf{A}$ or $\mathbf{D}$, isomorphisms between the quantizations are essentially the same as Poisson isomorphisms between deformations. In particular, the group of automorphisms of the deformation and the quantization corresponding to the same deformation parameter are isomorphic. We additionally describe the groups of automorphisms as abstract groups: for type $\mathbf{A}$ they have an amalgamated free product structure, for type $\mathbf{D}$ they are subgroups of the groups of Dynkin diagram automorphisms. We introduce the notion of a $\hbar$-vertex algebra, which is an algebraic structure similar to a vertex algebra, with a deformed translation covariance axiom. We study the structure theory of $\hbar$-vertex algebras, highlighting similarities with the structure theory of vertex algebras. We prove results analogous to Goddard's Uniqueness Theorem, Reconstruction Theorem, Borcherds Identity and OPE Expansion Formula. We also introduce the related notions of a $\hbar$-Lie conformal algebra and of a $\hbar$-Poisson vertex algebra. The main example of $\hbar$-vertex algebras are vertex algebras with deformed vertex operators $Y_\hbar(a,z)=(1+\hbar z)^{\Delta_a}Y(a,z)$, where $\Delta_a$ is the eigenvalue of a Hamiltonian operator $H$. We simplify the construction of the Zhu algebra using the formalism of $\hbar$-vertex algebras. As a further application of the theory developed in the first part of the paper, we discuss the chiralization of classical star-products. We compute explicit formulae for the chiralization of a class of star-products, including the Moyal-Weyl and the Gutt star-products. We present a study of the soft transverse optic phonon mode in SnTe in comparison to the corresponding mode in PbTe using inelastic neutron scattering and ab-initio lattice dynamical calculations. In contrast to previous reports our calculations predict that the soft mode in SnTe features a strongly asymmetric spectral weight distribution qualitatively similar to that found in PbTe. Experimentally, we find that the overall width in energy of the phonon peaks is comparable in our neutron scattering spectra for SnTe and PbTe. We observe the well-known double-peak-like signature of the TO mode in PbTe even down to $T$ = 5 K questioning its proposed origin purely based on phonon-phonon scattering. The proximity to the incipient ferroelectric transition in PbTe likely plays an important role not included in current models.

Electron-phonon coupling, i.e., the scattering of lattice vibrations by electrons and vice versa, is ubiquitous in solids and can lead to emergent ground states such as superconductivity and charge-density wave order. Strong coupling of phonons to electrons near the Fermi surface, which reduces the phonon lifetimes and broadens the phonon peaks in scattering experiments, is often associated with Fermi surface nesting. Here, we show that strong phonon broadening can occur in the absence of both Fermi surface nesting and lattice anharmonicity, if electron-phonon coupling is strongly enhanced for specific values of electron-momentum, k. We use inelastic neutron scattering, soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements and ab-initio lattice dynamical and electronic band structure calculations to demonstrate this scenario in the highly anisotropic tetragonal electron-phonon superconductor YNi$_2$B$_2$C. This new scenario likely applies to a wide range of compounds.

Concurrent strategies based on event structures are examined from the viewpoint of 'may' and 'must' testing in traditional process calculi. In their pure form concurrent strategies fail to expose the deadlocks and divergences that can arise in their composition. This motivates an extension of the bicategory of concurrent strategies to treat the 'may' and 'must' behaviour of strategies under testing. One extension adjoins neutral moves to strategies but in so doing loses identities w.r.t. composition. This in turn motivates another extension in which concurrent strategies are accompanied by stopping configurations; the ensuing stopping strategies inherit the structure of a bicategory from that of strategies. The technical developments converge in providing characterisations of the 'may' and 'must' equivalences and preorders on strategies.

We propose a text classification tool based on support vector machines for the assessment of organizational leadership styles, as appearing to Twitter users. We collected Twitter data over 51 days, related to the first 30 Italian organizations in the 2015 ranking of Forbes Global 2000-out of which we selected the five with the most relevant volumes of tweets. We analyzed the communication of the company leaders, together with the dialogue among the stakeholders of each company, to understand the association with perceived leadership styles and dimensions. To assess leadership profiles, we referred to the 10-factor model developed by Barchiesi and La Bella in 2007. We maintain the distinctiveness of the approach we propose, as it allows a rapid assessment of the perceived leadership capabilities of an enterprise, as they emerge from its social media interactions. It can also be used to show how companies respond and manage their communication when specific events take place, and to assess their stakeholder's reactions.

Game semantics is a denotational semantics presenting compositionally the computational behaviour of various kinds of effectful programs. One of its celebrated achievement is to have obtained full abstraction results for programming languages with a variety of computational effects, in a single framework. This is known as the semantic cube or Abramsky's cube, which for sequential deterministic programs establishes a correspondence between certain conditions on strategies (''innocence'', ''well-bracketing'', ''visibility'') and the absence of matching computational effects. Outside of the sequential deterministic realm, there are still a wealth of game semantics-based full abstraction results; but they no longer fit in a unified canvas. In particular, Ghica and Murawski's fully abstract model for shared state concurrency (IA) does not have a matching notion of pure parallel program-we say that parallelism and interference (i.e. state plus semaphores) are entangled. In this paper we construct a causal version of Ghica and Murawski's model, also fully abstract for IA. We provide compositional conditions parallel innocence and sequentiality, respectively banning interference and parallelism, and leading to four full abstraction results. To our knowledge, this is the first extension of Abramsky's semantic cube programme beyond the sequential deterministic world.

Game semantics has proven to be a robust method to give compositional semantics for a variety of higher-order programming languages. However, due to the complexity of most game models, game semantics has remained unapproachable for non-experts. In this paper, we aim at making game semantics more accessible by viewing it as a syntactic translation into a session typed pi-calculus, referred to as metalanguage, followed by a semantics interpretation of the metalanguage into a particular game model. The syntactic translation can be defined for a wide range of programming languages without knowledge of the particular game model used. Simple reasoning on the model (soundness, and adequacy) can be done at the level of the metalanguage, escaping tedious technical proofs usually found in game semantics. We call this methodology programming game semantics. We design a metalanguage (PiDiLL) inspired from Differential Linear Logic (DiLL), which is concise but expressive enough to support features required by concurrent game semantics. We then demonstrate our methodology by yielding the first causal, non-angelic and interactive game model of CML, a higher-order call-by-value language with shared memory concurrency. We translate CML into PiDiLL and show that the translation is adequate. We give a causal and non-angelic game semantics model using event structures, which supports a simple semantics interpretation of PiDiLL. Combining both of these results, we obtain the first interactive model of a concurrent language of this expressivity which is adequate with respect to the standard weak bisimulation, and fully abstract for the contextual equivalence on second-order terms. We have implemented a prototype which can explore the generated causal object from a subset of OCaml.

Nematicity is ubiquitous in electronic phases of high-$T_c$ superconductors, particularly in the Fe-based systems. We used inelastic x-ray scattering to extract the temperature-dependent nematic correlation length $\xi$ from the anomalous softening of acoustic phonon modes in FeSe, underdoped Ba(Fe$_{0.97}$Co$_{0.03}$)$_2$As$_2$ and optimally doped Ba(Fe$_{0.94}$Co$_{0.06}$)$_2$As$_2$. In all cases, we find that $\xi$ is well described by a power law $(T-T_0)^{-1/2}$ extending over a wide temperature range. We attributed this mean-field behavior and the extended fluctuation regime to a sizable nemato-elastic coupling, which may be detrimental to superconductivity.

We show how the categorical logic of untyped, simply typed and dependently typed lambda calculus can be structured around the notion of category with family (cwf). To this end we introduce subcategories of simply typed cwfs (scwfs), where types do not depend on variables, and unityped cwfs (ucwfs), where there is only one type. We prove several equivalence and biequivalence theorems between cwf-based notions and basic notions of categorical logic, such as cartesian operads, Lawvere theories, categories with finite products and limits, cartesian closed categories, and locally cartesian closed categories. Some of these theorems depend on the restrictions of contextuality (in the sense of Cartmell) or democracy (used by Clairambault and Dybjer for their biequivalence theorems). Some theorems are equivalences between notions with strict preservation of chosen structure. Others are biequivalences between notions where properties are only preserved up to isomorphism. In addition to this we discuss various constructions of initial ucwfs, scwfs, and cwfs with extra structure.

Nematicity is ubiquitous in electronic phases of high-$T_c$ superconductors, particularly in the Fe-based systems. While several experiments have probed nematic fluctuations, they have been restricted to uniform or momentum averaged fluctuations. Here, we investigate the behavior of finite-momentum nematic fluctuations by utilizing the anomalous softening of acoustic phonon modes in optimally doped Ba(Fe$_{0.94}$Co$_{0.06}$)$_2$As$_2$. We determine the nematic correlation length and find that it sharply changes its $T$-dependence at $T_c$, revealing a strong connection between nematicity and superconductivity.

According to standard theory the magnetoresistance magnitude in ferromagnetic manganites crucially depends on the electron-phonon coupling strength. We showed that in La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 the phonon renormalization is strong, despite its relatively small magnetoresistance. Here, we report results of a similar inelastic neutron scattering investigation of a closely related compound, La0.8Sr0.2MnO3, where the magnetoresistance is enhanced. We find similar phonon renormalization and dynamic CE-type polaron correlations as in La0.7Sr0.3MnO3. However, quantitative comparison of the results for the two samples shows that only polaron lifetime is well correlated with the strength of the CMR., Comment: 5 figures

The heavy-fermion compound CeCu$_{6-x}$Au$_x$ has become a model system for unconventional magnetic quantum criticality. For small Au concentrations $0 \leq x < 0.16$, the compound undergoes a structural transition from orthorhombic to monoclinic crystal symmetry at a temperature $T_{s}$ with $T_{s} \rightarrow 0$ for $x \approx 0.15$. Antiferromagnetic order sets in close to $x \approx 0.1$. To shed light on the interplay between quantum critical magnetic and structural fluctuations we performed neutron-scattering and thermodynamic measurements on samples with $0 \leq x\leq 0.3$. The resulting phase diagram shows that the antiferromagnetic and monoclinic phase coexist in a tiny Au concentration range between $x\approx 0.1$ and $0.15$. The application of hydrostatic and chemical pressure allows to clearly separate the transitions from each other and to explore a possible effect of the structural transition on the magnetic quantum critical behavior. Our measurements demonstrate that at low temperatures the unconventional quantum criticality exclusively arises from magnetic fluctuations and is not affected by the monoclinic distortion., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

FeCrAs displays an unusual electrical response that is neither metallic in character nor divergent at low temperatures, as expected for an insulating response, and therefore it has been termed a "nonmetal-metal". We carried out neutron scattering experiments on powder and single crystal samples to study the magnetic dynamics and critical fluctuations in FeCrAs. Magnetic neutron diffraction measurements find Cr3+ magnetic order setting in at 115 K with the mean-field critical exponent. Neutron spectroscopy, however, observes gapless stiff magnetic fluctuations emanating from magnetic positions with propagation wave vector q_0=(1/3,1/3), which persists up to at least 80 meV. The magnetism in FeCrAs therefore displays a response which resembles that of itinerant magnets at high energy transfers, such as chromium alloys. We suggest that the presence of stiff high-energy spin fluctuations is the origin of the unusual temperature dependence of the resistivity., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

The origin of the effect of colossal magneto-resistance (CMR) remains still unexplained. In this work we revisit the spin dynamics of the pseudo-cubic La1-xSrxMnO3 along the Mn-O-Mn bond direction at four x doping values (x < 0.5) and various temperatures and report a new lattice dynamics study at x0=0.2, representative of the optimal doping for CMR. We propose an interpretation of the spin dynamics in terms of orbital polarons. This picture is supported by the observation of a discrete magnetic energy spectrum Enmag (q) characteristic of the internal excitations of "orbital polarons" defined by Mn3+ neighbors surrounding a Mn4+ center with a hole. Because of its hopping, the hole mixes up dynamically all the possible orbital configurations of its surrounding Mn3+ sites with degenerate energies. The Enmag values indicate a lift of orbital degeneracy by phonon excitations. The number n varies with the spatial dimension D of the polaron and the q-range determines its size. At x=0.125 and x=0.3 the spectrum reveals 2D polarons coupled by exchange and 3D "free" polarons respectively, with sizes l=1.67a < 2a in all bond directions. At x0=0.2, the spin and the lattice dynamics provide evidence for chains of orbital polarons of size l=2a with a periodic distribution over ~ 3a and an interaction energy ~ 3 meV. At T < Tc the charges propagate together with the longitudinal acoustic phonons along the chains enhancing their ferromagnetic character. The phase separation between metallic and ferromagnetic chains in a non-metallic matrix may be crucial for CMR.

Electron-phonon interaction in copper oxide superconductors is still enigmatic. Strong coupling for certain optic phonons is now well established experimentally, but theoretical understanding is challenging. Scattering of electrons near the Fermi surface by the longitudinal acoustic (LA) phonons is expected from basic theory because these phonons modulate electron density. We used inelastic neutron scattering on a large single crystal sample of optimally-doped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ to show that low-energy LA phonons could couple to electronic density fluctuations only at small phonon wavevectors, which naturally limits any interaction to forward scattering. Such scattering should not be pairbreaking in the case of the d-wave gap. Global sensitivity analysis is a set of methods aiming at quantifying the contribution of an uncertain input parameter of the model (or combination of parameters) on the variability of the response. We consider here the estimation of the Sobol indices of order 1 which are commonly-used indicators based on a decomposition of the output's variance. In a deterministic framework, when the same inputs always give the same outputs, these indices are usually estimated by replicated simulations of the model. In a stochastic framework, when the response given a set of input parameters is not unique due to randomness in the model, metamodels are often used to approximate the mean and dispersion of the response by deterministic functions. We propose a new non-parametric estimator without the need of defining a metamodel to estimate the Sobol indices of order 1. The estimator is based on warped wavelets and is adaptive in the regularity of the model. The convergence of the mean square error to zero, when the number of simulations of the model tend to infinity, is computed and an elbow effect is shown, depending on the regularity of the model. Applications in Epidemiology are carried to illustrate the use of non-parametric estimators.

Intermediate valence compounds containing rare earth or actinide ions are archetypal systems for the investigation of strong electron correlations. Their effective electron masses of 10 to 50 times the free electron mass result from a hybridization of the highly localized $f$-electrons with the more itinerant $d$-electrons, which is strong enough that their properties are dominated by on-site electron correlations. To a remarkable degree, this can be modeled by the Anderson Impurity Model, even though the $f$-electrons are situated on a periodic lattice. However, in recent years, there has been increasing evidence that the dynamic magnetic susceptibility of intermediate valence compounds is not purely local, but shows variations across the Brillouin zone that have been ascribed to $f$-band coherence. So far, this has been based on simplified qualitative models. In this article, we present a quantitative comparison of inelastic neutron scattering from a single crystal of CePd$_3$, measured in four-dimensional (Q,$\omega$)-space, with ab initio calculations, which are in excellent agreement on an absolute scale. Our results establish that the Q-dependence of the scattering is caused by particle-hole excitations within $f$-$d$ hybridized bands that grow in coherence with decreasing temperature., Comment: 8 page article with 6 figures, 4 page supplementary information with 8 figures

By means of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering at the Cu L$_3$ edge, we measured the spin wave dispersion along $\langle$100$\rangle$ and $\langle$110$\rangle$ in the undoped cuprate Ca$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$. The data yields a reliable estimate of the superexchange parameter $J$ = 135 $\pm$ 4 meV using a classical spin-1/2 2D Heisenberg model with nearest-neighbor interactions and including quantum fluctuations. Including further exchange interactions increases the estimate to $J$ = 141 meV. The 40 meV dispersion between the magnetic Brillouin zone boundary points (1/2,\,0) and (1/4,\,1/4) indicates that next-nearest neighbor interactions in this compound are intermediate between the values found in La$_{2}$CuO$_4$ and Sr$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$. Owing to the low-$Z$ elements composing Ca$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$, the present results may enable a reliable comparison with the predictions of quantum many-body calculations, which would improve our understanding of the role of magnetic excitations and of electronic correlations in cuprates., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

Nematic order is ubiquitous in liquid crystals and is characterized by a rotational symmetry breaking in an otherwise uniform liquid. Recently a similar phenomenon has been observed in some electronic phases of quantum materials related to high temperature superconductivity, particularly in the Fe-based superconductors. While several experiments have probed nematic fluctuations, they have been primarily restricted to the uniform nematic susceptibility, i.e. q = 0 fluctuations. Here, we investigate the behavior of finite-momentum nematic fluctuations by measuring transverse acoustic phonon modes with wavelengths of up to 25 unit cells in the prototypical Fe-based compound Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$. While the slope of the phonon dispersion gives information about the uniform nematic susceptibility, deviations from this linear behavior at finite but small wave-vectors are attributed to finite-momentum nematic fluctuations. Surprisingly, these non-zero q fluctuations lead to a softening of the phonon mode below the superconducting transition temperature, in contrast to the behavior of the phonon velocity at q = 0, which increases below $T_c$. Our work not only establishes a sound method to probe long wavelength nematic fluctuations, but also sheds light on the unique interplay between nematicity and superconductivity in Fe-based compounds.

In 2011, Rideau and Winskel introduced concurrent games and strategies as event structures, generalizing prior work on causal formulations of games. In this paper we give a detailed, self-contained and slightly-updated account of the results of Rideau and Winskel: a notion of pre-strategy based on event structures; a characterisation of those pre-strategies (deemed strategies) which are preserved by composition with a copycat strategy; and the construction of a bicategory of these strategies. Furthermore, we prove that the corresponding category has a compact closed structure, and hence forms the basis for the semantics of concurrent higher-order computation.

The single-layer perovskite cobaltates have attracted enormous attention due to the recent observation of hour-glass shaped magnetic excitation spectra which resemble the ones of the famous high-temperature superconducting cuprates. Here, we present an overview of our most recent studies of the spin and charge correlations in floating-zone grown cobaltate single crystals. We find that frustration and a novel kind of electronic and magnetic nano phase separation are intimately connected to the appearance of the hour-glass shaped spin excitation spectra. Among colossal magnetoresistive manganites the prototypical ferromagnetic manganite La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ has a relatively small magnetoresistance, and has been long assumed to have only weak electron-lattice coupling. Here we report that La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ has strong electron-phonon coupling: Our neutron and x-ray scattering experiments show strong softening and broadening of transverse acoustic phonons on heating through the Curie temperature T$_C$ = 350 K. Simultaneously, we observe two phases where metallic resistivity and polarons coexist. The ferromagnetic polaronic metal phase between 200 K and T$_C$ is characterized by quasielastic scattering from dynamic CE-type polarons with the relatively short lifetime of $\mathbf{\tau}\approx 1\,\rm{ps}$. This scattering is greatly enhanced above T$_C$ in the paramagnetic polaronic metal phase. Our results suggest that the strength of magnetoresistance in manganites scales with the inverse of polaron lifetime, not the strength of electron-phonon coupling.

A charge-density wave (CDW) state has a broken symmetry described by a complex order parameter with an amplitude and a phase. The conventional view, based on clean, weak-coupling systems, is that a finite amplitude and long-range phase coherence set in simultaneously at the CDW transition temperature T$_{cdw}$. Here we investigate, using photoemission, X-ray scattering and scanning tunneling microscopy, the canonical CDW compound 2H-NbSe$_2$ intercalated with Mn and Co, and show that the conventional view is untenable. We find that, either at high temperature or at large intercalation, CDW order becomes short-ranged with a well-defined amplitude that impacts the electronic dispersion, giving rise to an energy gap. The phase transition at T$_{cdw}$ marks the onset of long-range order with global phase coherence, leading to sharp electronic excitations. Our observations emphasize the importance of phase fluctuations in strongly coupled CDW systems and provide insights into the significance of phase incoherence in `pseudogap' states., Comment: main manuscript plus supplementary information

The magnetic excitations in the cuprate superconductors might be essential for an understanding of high-temperature superconductivity. In these cuprate superconductors the magnetic excitation spectrum resembles an hour-glass and certain resonant magnetic excitations within are believed to be connected to the pairing mechanism which is corroborated by the observation of a universal linear scaling of superconducting gap and magnetic resonance energy. So far, charge stripes are widely believed to be involved in the physics of hour-glass spectra. Here we study an isostructural cobaltate that also exhibits an hour-glass magnetic spectrum. Instead of the expected charge stripe order we observe nano phase separation and unravel a microscopically split origin of hour-glass spectra on the nano scale pointing to a connection between the magnetic resonance peak and the spin gap originating in islands of the antiferromagnetic parent insulator. We show that a version of Martin-L\"of type theory with an extensional identity type former I, a unit type N1 , Sigma-types, Pi-types, and a base type is a free category with families (supporting these type formers) both in a 1- and a 2-categorical sense. It follows that the underlying category of contexts is a free locally cartesian closed category in a 2-categorical sense because of a previously proved biequivalence. We show that equality in this category is undecidable by reducing it to the undecidability of convertibility in combinatory logic. Essentially the same construction also shows a slightly strengthened form of the result that equality in extensional Martin-L\"of type theory with one universe is undecidable.

We find excitations lower in energy than known phonon modes in underdoped La$\_{2-x}$Sr$\_x$CuO$\_{4+\delta}$ (x=0.08), with both inelastic X-Ray scattering (IXS) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS). A non dispersive excitation at 9 meV is identified and is also seen by INS in (La,Nd)$\_{2-x}$Sr$\_x$CuO$\_{4+\delta}$, with 40$\%$ Nd substitution. INS also identifies a still lower energy dispersive mode at low q in the Nd free sample. These modes are clearly distinct from the longitudinal acoustic phonon and correspond in energy to the Zone Centre modes measured by optical spectroscopy and associated with stripe dynamics.

Parent compounds of Fe-based superconductors undergo a structural phase transition from a tetragonal to an orthorhombic structure. We investigated the temperature dependence of the frequencies of transverse acoustic (TA) phonons that extrapolate to the shear vibrational mode at the zone center, which corresponds to the orthorhombic deformation of the crystal structure at low temperatures in BaFe 2 As 2 and SrFe 2 As 2 . We found that acoustic phonons at small wavevectors soften gradually towards the transition from high temperatures, tracking the increase of the size of slowly fluctuating magnetic domains. On cooling below the transition to base temperature the phonons harden, following the square of the magnetic moment. We build a cartesian closed category, called Cho, based on event structures. It allows an interpretation of higher-order stateful concurrent programs that is refined and precise: on the one hand it is conservative with respect to standard Hyland-Ong games when interpreting purely functional programs as innocent strategies, while on the other hand it is much more expressive. The interpretation of programs constructs compositionally a representation of their execution that exhibits causal dependencies and remembers the points of non-deterministic branching.The construction is in two stages. First, we build a compact closed category Tcg. It is a variant of Rideau and Winskel's category CG, with the difference that games and strategies in Tcg are equipped with symmetry to express that certain events are essentially the same. This is analogous to the underlying category of AJM games enriching simple games with an equivalence relations on plays. Building on this category, we construct the cartesian closed category Cho as having as objects the standard arenas of Hyland-Ong games, with strategies, represented by certain events structures, playing on games with symmetry obtained as expanded forms of these arenas.To illustrate and give an operational light on these constructions, we interpret (a close variant of) Idealized Parallel Algol in Cho.

The energy gap for electronic excitations is one of the most important characteristics of the superconducting state, as it directly refects the pairing of electrons. In the copper-oxide high temperature superconductors (HTSCs), a strongly anisotropic energy gap, which vanishes along high symmetry directions, is a clear manifestation of the d-wave symmetry of the pairing. There is, however, a dramatic change in the form of the gap anisotropy with reduced carrier concentration (underdoping). Although the vanishing of the gap along the diagonal to the square Cu-O bond directions is robust, the doping dependence of the large gap along the Cu-O directions suggests that its origin might be different from pairing. It is thus tempting to associate the large gap with a second order parameter distinct from superconductivity. We use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to show that the two-gap behavior, and the destruction of well defined electronic excitations, are not universal features of HTSCs, and depend sensitively on how the underdoped materials are prepared. Depending on cation substitution, underdoped samples either show two-gap behavior or not. In contrast, many other characteristics of HTSCs, such as the domelike dependence of Tc on doping, long-lived excitations along the diagonals to the Cu-O bonds, energy gap at the antinode (crossing of the underlying Fermi surface and the (pi, 0)-(pi, pi) line) decreasing monotonically with doping, while persisting above Tc (the pseudogap), are present in all samples, irrespective of whether they exhibit two-gap behavior or not. Our results imply that universal aspects of high Tc superconductivity are relatively insensitive to differences in the electronic states along the Cu-O bond directions., Comment: Accepted for publication at PNAS

The main feature of the spatial large-scale galaxy distribution is its intricate network of galaxy filaments. This network is spanned by the galaxy locations that can be interpreted as a three-dimensional point distribution. The global properties of the point process can be measured by different statistical methods, which, however, do not describe directly the structure elements. The morphology of the large scale structure, on the other hand, is an important property of the galaxy distribution. Here we apply an object point process with interactions (the Bisous model) to trace and extract the filamentary network in the presently largest galaxy redshift survey, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We search for filaments in the galaxy distribution that have a radius of about 0.5 Mpc/h. We divide the detected network into single filaments and present a public catalogue of filaments. We study the filament length distribution and show that the longest filaments reach the length of 60 Mpc/h. The filaments contain 35-40% of the total galaxy luminosity and they cover roughly 5-8% of the total volume, in good agreement with N-body simulations and previous observational results., Comment: 21 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present an investigation of the lattice dynamics of the charge-density-wave compound 2H-NbSe2. We analyze the precise nature of the wave vector dependent electron-phonon coupling (EPC) and derive the bare dispersion of the charge-density-wave (CDW) soft phonon mode using inelastic x-ray scattering combined with ab-initio calculations. Experimentally, phonon modes along the {\Gamma} - M line, i.e. q = (h, 0, 0) with 0 <= h <= 0.5, with the same longitudinal symmetry ({\Sigma}1) as the CDW soft mode were investigated up to 32 meV. In agreement with our calculations we observe significant EPC in the optic modes at h <= 0.2. We analyze the EPC in the optic as well as acoustic modes and show that the q dependences stem from scattering processes between two bands at the Fermi surface both having Nb 4d character. Finally, we demonstrate that the soft mode dispersion at T = 33 K (= {T_{CDW}}) can be well described on the basis of a strongly q dependent EPC matrix element and an acoustic-like bare phonon dispersion in agreement with observations near room temperature., Comment: accepted as regular article in Physical Review B

A theory of superconductivity in the iron-based materials requires an understanding of the phase diagram of the normal state. In these compounds, superconductivity emerges when stripe spin density wave (SDW) order is suppressed by doping, pressure or atomic disorder. This magnetic order is often pre-empted by nematic order, whose origin is yet to be resolved. One scenario is that nematic order is driven by orbital ordering of the iron 3d-electrons that triggers stripe SDW order. Another is that magnetic interactions produce a spin-nematic phase, which then induces orbital order. In this article, we report the observation by neutron powder diffraction of an additional four- fold-symmetric phase in Ba1-xNaxFe2As2 close to the suppression of SDW order, which is consistent with the predictions of magnetically-driven models of nematic order., Comment: Article (6 pages, 3 figures) + Supplementary Information (5 pages, 3 figures)

We report an inelastic neutron scattering investigation of phonons with energies up to 159 meV in the conventional superconductor YNi$_2$B$_2$C. Using the SWEEP mode, a newly developed time-of-flight technique involving the continuous rotation of a single crystal specimen, allowed us to measure a four dimensional volume in (Q,E) space and, thus, determine the dispersion surface and linewidths of the $A_{1g}$ (~ 102 meV) and $A_u$ (~ 159 meV) type phonon modes for the whole Brillouin zone. Despite of having linewidths of $\Gamma = 10 meV$, $A_{1g}$ modes do not strongly contribute to the total electron-phonon coupling constant $\lambda$. However, experimental linewidths show a remarkable agreement with ab-initio calculations over the complete phonon energy range demonstrating the accuracy of such calculations in a rare comparison to a comprehensive experimental data set., Comment: accepted for publication in PRL

We report the results of a systematic investigation of the phase diagram of the iron-based superconductor, Ba1-xKxFe2As2, from x = 0 to x = 1.0 using high resolution neutron and x-ray diffraction and magnetization measurements. The polycrystalline samples were prepared with an estimated compositional variation of \Deltax <~ 0.01, allowing a more precise estimate of the phase boundaries than reported so far. At room temperature, Ba1-xKxFe2As2 crystallizes in a tetragonal structure with the space group symmetry of I4/mmm, but at low doping, the samples undergo a coincident first-order structural and magnetic phase transition to an orthorhombic (O) structure with space group Fmmm and a striped antiferromagnet (AF) with space group Fcmm'm'. The transition temperature falls from a maximum of 139K in the undoped compound to 0K at x = 0.252, with a critical exponent as a function of doping of 0.25(2) and 0.12(1) for the structural and magnetic order parameters, respectively. The onset of superconductivity occurs at a critical concentration of x = 0.130(3) and the superconducting transition temperature grows linearly with x until it crosses the AF/O phase boundary. Below this concentration, there is microscopic phase coexistence of the AF/O and superconducting order parameters, although a slight suppression of the AF/O order is evidence that the phases are competing. At higher doping, superconductivity has a maximum Tc of 38 K at x = 0.4 falling to 3 K at x = 1.0. It was recently discovered that the low temperature, charge ordered phase of 1T-TiSe2 has a chiral character. This unexpected chirality in a system described by a scalar order parameter could be explained in a model where the emergence of relative phase shifts between three charge density wave components breaks the inversion symmetry of the lattice. Here, we present experimental evidence for the sequence of phase transitions predicted by that theory, going from disorder to non-chiral and finally to chiral charge order. Employing X-ray diffraction, specific heat, and electrical transport measurements, we find that a novel phase transition occurs ~7 K below the main charge ordering transition in TiSe2, in agreement with the predicted hierarchy of charge ordered phases., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures; includes additional experimental and theoretical results; fixed typos

We report an inelastic neutron scattering study of acoustic phonons in the charge and orbitally ordered bilayer manganite LaSr$_2$Mn$_2$O$_7$. For excitation energies less than $15\,\rm{meV}$, we observe an abrupt increase (decrease) of the phonon energies (linewidths) of a transverse acoustic phonon branch at $\mathbf{q} = (h, h, 0)$, $h\le0.3$, upon entering the low temperature charge and orbital ordered state ($T_{COO} = 225\,\rm{K}$). This indicates a reduced electron-phonon coupling due to a decrease of electronic states at the Fermi level leading to a partial removal of the Fermi surface below $T_{COO}$ and provides direct experimental evidence for a link between electron-phonon coupling and charge order in manganites., Comment: accepted in Physical Review Letters

We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the resonant spin excitations in Ba1-xKxFe2As2 over a broad range of electron band filling. The fall in the superconducting transi- tion temperature with hole doping coincides with the magnetic excitations splitting into two incom- mensurate peaks because of the growing mismatch in the hole and electron Fermi surface volumes, as confirmed by a tight-binding model with s+- symmetry pairing. The reduction in Fermi surface nesting is accompanied by a collapse of the resonance binding energy and its spectral weight caused by the weakening of electron-electron correlations., Comment: 4 pages 4 figures

We report high-resolution inelastic x-ray measurements of the soft phonon mode in the charge-density-wave compound TiSe$_2$. We observe a complete softening of a transverse optic phonon at the L point, i.e. q = (0.5, 0, 0.5), at T ~ T_{CDW}. Renormalized phonon energies are observed over a large wavevector range $(0.3, 0, 0.5) \le \mathbf{q} \le (0.5, 0, 0.5)$. Detailed ab-initio calculations for the electronic and lattice dynamical properties of TiSe2 are in quantitative agreement with experimental frequencies for the phonon branch involving the soft mode. The observed broad range of renormalized phonon frequencies is directly related to a broad peak in the electronic susceptibility stabilizing the charge-density-wave ordered state. Our analysis demonstrates that a conventional electron-phonon coupling mechanism can explain a structural instability and the charge-density-wave order in TiSe_2 although other mechanisms might further boost the transition temperature.

We report inelastic x-ray scattering measurements of the temperature dependence of phonon dispersion in the prototypical charge-density-wave (CDW) compound NbSe2. Surprisingly, acoustic phonons soften to zero frequency and become overdamped over an extended region around the CDW wavevector. This extended phonon collapse is dramatically different from the sharp cusp in the phonon dispersion expected from Fermi surface nesting. Instead, our experiments combined with ab initio calculations, show that it is the wavevector dependence of the electron-phonon coupling that drives the CDW formation in NbSe$_2$ and determines its periodicity. This mechanism explains the so far enigmatic behavior of CDW in NbSe$_2$ and may provide a new approach to other strongly correlated systems where electron-phonon coupling is important.

We report a high resolution neutron diffraction investigation of the coupling of structural and magnetic transitions in Ba1xKxFe2As2. The tetragonal-orthorhombic and antiferromagnetic transitions are suppressed with potassium-doping, falling to zero at x <~ 0.3. However, unlike Ba(Fe1xCox)2As2, the two transitions are first-order and coincident over the entire phase diagram, with a biquadratic coupling of the two order parameters. The phase diagram is refined showing that the onset of superconductivity is at x = 0.133 with all three phases coexisting until x >~ 0.24., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

We report a high resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering investigation of the bilayer manganites La$_{2-2x}$Sr$_{1+2x}$Mn$_2$O$_7$ with $x = 0.36$ and $0.5$. The momentum dependence along the crystallographic $(110)$ direction for energy losses $1\,\rm{eV} \leq \Delta E \leq 15\,\rm{eV}$ has been measured in detail with the data analysis focusing on the energy loss region $1\,\rm{eV} \leq \Delta E \leq 5\,\rm{eV}$, which includes a strong peak located at $\Delta E \approx 2\,\rm{eV}$. We observe a clear dispersion of up to $0.5\,\rm{eV}$ in the measured $\textbf{q}$ range, which is direct evidence of the non-local character of this excitation. Further, we found that the intensity in this low energy region strongly depends on both the reduced wave vector $\textbf{q} = (h, h, 0)$, $h = 0.1 - 0.5$, and temperature, i.e. different ordered phases. Results can be explained via an intersite $d-d$ charge transfer excitation, proposed for pseudo-cubic manganites, where the hopping rate is strongly increased (decreased) by ferromagnetic (antiferromagnetic) alignment of neighboring in-plane Mn ion core spins.

The magnetic structure for the newly discovered iron-arsenide compound \CaFeAs has been studied by neutron powder diffraction. Long-range magnetic order is detected below 85K, with an incommensurate modulation described by the propagation vector k=(0,$\delta$,0), $\delta\sim$ 0.39. Below $\sim$ 25K, our measurements detect a first-order phase transition where $\delta$ locks into the commensurate value 3/8. A model of the magnetic structure is proposed for both temperature regimes, based on Rietveld refinements of the powder data and symmetry considerations. The structures correspond to longitudinal spin-density-waves with magnetic moments directed along the \textit{b}-axis. A Landau analysis captures the change in thermodynamic quantities observed at the two magnetic transitions, in particular the drop in resistivity at the lock-in transition.

We have performed x-ray scattering measurements on single crystals of the doped spin-Peierls compound Ti(1-x)Sc(x)OCl (x = 0, 0.01, 0.03). These measurements reveal that the presence of non-magnetic dopants has a profound effect on the unconventional spin-Peierls behavior of this system, even at concentrations as low as 1%. Sc-doping suppresses commensurate fluctuations in the pseudogap and incommensurate spin-Peierls phases of TiOCl, and prevents the formation of a long-range ordered spin-Peierls state. Broad incommensurate scattering develops in the doped compounds near Tc2 ~ 93 K, and persists down to base temperature (~ 7 K) with no evidence of a lock-in transition. The width of the incommensurate dimerization peaks indicates short correlation lengths on the order of ~ 12 angstroms below Tc2. The intensity of the incommensurate scattering is significantly reduced at higher Sc concentrations, indicating that the size of the associated lattice displacement decreases rapidly as a function of doping., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We have studied structural phase transitions in high quality underdoped La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$ single crystals using high resolution x-ray scattering techniques. Critical properties associated with the continuous High Temperature Tetragonal (HTT, $I4/mmm$) to Middle Temperature Orthorhombic (MTO, $Cmca$) phase transition were investigated in single crystal samples with x=0.125, 0.095, and 0.08 and we find that all behavior is consistent with three dimensional XY criticality, as expected from theory. Power law behavior in the orthorhombic strain, 2(a-b)/(a+b), is observed over a remarkably wide temperature range, spanning most of the MTO regime in the phase diagram. Low temperature measurements investigating the Low Temperature Tetragonal (LTT, $P4_{2}/ncm$) phase, below the strongly discontinuous MTO$\to$LTT phase transition, in x=0.125 and x=0.095 samples show that the LTT phase is characterized by relatively broad Bragg scattering, compared with that observed at related wavevectors in the HTT phase. This shows that the LTT phase is either an admixture of tetragonal and orthorhombic phases, or that it is orthorhombic with very small orthorhombic strain, consistent with the ``less orthorhombic" low temperature structure previously reported in mixed La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x-y}$Ba$_y$CuO$_4$ single crystals. We compare the complex temperature-composition phase diagram for the location of structural and superconducting phase transitions in underdoped La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$ and find good agreement with results obtained on polycrystalline samples., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

High resolution X-ray scattering measurements on single crystal Tb2Ti2O7 reveal finite structural correlations at low temperatures. This geometrically frustrated pyrochlore is known to exhibit a spin liquid, or cooperative paramagnetic state, at temperatures below ~ 20 K. Parametric studies of structural Bragg peaks appropriate to the Fd$\bar{3}$m space group of Tb2Ti2O7 reveal substantial broadening and peak intensity reduction in the temperature regime 20 K to 300 mK. We also observe a small, anomalous lattice expansion on cooling below a density maximum at ~ 18 K. These measurements are consistent with the development of fluctuations above a cooperative Jahn-Teller, cubic-tetragonal phase transition at very low temperatures., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted for publication

X-ray scattering measurements on single crystals of TiOCl reveal the presence of commensurate dimerization peaks within both the incommensurate spin-Peierls phase and the so-called pseudogap phase above T_c2. This scattering is relatively narrow in Q-space indicating long correlation lengths exceeding ~ 100 A below T* ~ 130 K. It is also slightly shifted in Q relative to that of the commensurate long range ordered state at the lowest temperatures, and it coexists with the incommensurate Bragg peaks below T_c2. The integrated scattering over both commensurate and incommensurate positions evolves continuously with decreasing temperature for all temperatures below T* ~ 130 K., Comment: To appear in Physical Review B: Rapid Communications. 5 pages
