Cerebral aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations are life-threatening hemodynamic pathologies of the brain. While surgical intervention is often essential to prevent fatal outcomes, it carries significant risks both during the procedure and in the postoperative period, making the management of these conditions highly challenging. Parameters of cerebral blood flow, routinely monitored during medical interventions, could potentially be utilized in machine learning-assisted protocols for risk assessment and therapeutic prognosis. To this end, we developed a linear oscillatory model of blood velocity and pressure for clinical data acquired from neurosurgical operations. Using the method of Sparse Identification of Nonlinear Dynamics (SINDy), the parameters of our model can be reconstructed online within milliseconds from a short time series of the hemodynamic variables. The identified parameter values enable automated classification of the blood-flow pathologies by means of logistic regression, achieving an accuracy of 73 %. Large systems are often coarse-grained in order to study their low-dimensional macroscopic dynamics, yet microscopic complexity can in principle disrupt these predictions in many ways. We first consider one form of fine-grained complexity, heterogeneity in the time scales of microscopic dynamics, and show by an algebraic approach that it can stabilize macroscopic degrees of freedom. We then show that this time scale heterogeneity can arise from other forms of complexity, in particular disordered interactions between microscopic variables, and that it can drive the system's coarse-grained dynamics to transition from nonequilibrium attractors to fixed points. These mechanisms are demonstrated in a model of many-species ecosystems, where we find a quasi-decoupling between the low- and high-dimensional facets of the dynamics, interacting only through a key feature of ecological models, the fact that species' dynamical time scales are controlled by their abundances. This study proposes a novel, contrast-free Magnetic Resonance Fingerprinting (MRF) method using balanced Steady-State Free Precession (bSSFP) sequences for the quantification of cerebral blood volume (CBV), vessel radius (R), and relaxometry parameters (T1, T2 T2*) in the brain. The technique leverages the sensitivity of bSSFP sequences to intra-voxel frequency distributions in both transient and steady-state regimes. A dictionary-matching process is employed, using simulations of realistic mouse microvascular networks to generate the MRF dictionary. The method is validated through in silico studies and in vivo experiments on six healthy subjects, comparing results with standard MRF methods and literature values. The proposed method shows strong correlation and agreement with standard MRF methods for T1 and T2 values. High-resolution maps provide detailed visualizations of CBV and microvascular structures, highlighting differences in white matter (WM) and grey matter (GM) regions. The measured GM/WM ratio for CBV is 1.91, consistent with literature values. This contrast-free bSSFP-based MRF method offers an innovative approach for quantifying CBV, vessel radius, and relaxometry parameters. Matrix denoising is central to signal processing and machine learning. Its analysis when the matrix to infer has a factorised structure with a rank growing proportionally to its dimension remains a challenge, except when it is rotationally invariant. In this case the information theoretic limits and a Bayes-optimal denoising algorithm, called rotational invariant estimator [1,2], are known. Beyond this setting few results can be found. The reason is that the model is not a usual spin system because of the growing rank dimension, nor a matrix model due to the lack of rotation symmetry, but rather a hybrid between the two. In this paper we make progress towards the understanding of Bayesian matrix denoising when the hidden signal is a factored matrix $XX^\intercal$ that is not rotationally invariant. Monte Carlo simulations suggest the existence of a denoising-factorisation transition separating a phase where denoising using the rotational invariant estimator remains Bayes-optimal due to universality properties of the same nature as in random matrix theory, from one where universality breaks down and better denoising is possible by exploiting the signal's prior and factorised structure, though algorithmically hard. We also argue that it is only beyond the transition that factorisation, i.e., estimating $X$ itself, becomes possible up to sign and permutation ambiguities. On the theoretical side, we combine mean-field techniques in an interpretable multiscale fashion in order to access the minimum mean-square error and mutual information. Interestingly, our alternative method yields equations which can be reproduced using the replica approach of [3]. Using numerical insights, we then delimit the portion of the phase diagram where this mean-field theory is reliable, and correct it using universality when it is not. Our ansatz matches well the numerics when accounting for finite size effects.

We study the binary symmetric perceptron model, and in particular its atypical solutions. While the solution-space of this problem is dominated by isolated configurations, it is also solvable for a certain range of constraint density $\alpha$ and threshold $\kappa$. We provide in this paper a statistical measure probing sequences of solutions, where two consecutive elements shares a strong overlap. After simplifications, we test its predictions by comparing it to Monte-Carlo simulations. We obtain good agreement and show that connected states with a Markovian correlation profile can fully decorrelate from their initialization only for $\kappa>\kappa_{\rm no-mem.\, state}$ ($\kappa_{\rm no-mem.\, state}\sim \sqrt{0.91\log(N)}$ for $\alpha=0.5$ and $N$ being the dimension of the problem). For $\kappa<\kappa_{\rm no-mem.\, state}$, we show that decorrelated sequences still exist but have a non-trivial correlations profile. To study this regime we introduce an $Ansatz$ for the correlations that we label as the nested Markov chain.

We report the investigation of electronic collective modes in rare-earth-based magnets (Mo$_{2/3}$RE$_{1/3}$)$_2$AlC (also known as RE-$i$-MAX phases), where RE=Gd, Yb, and Dy, using single crystal samples. A detailed investigation of the Raman spectra of Gd-$i$-MAX samples at low temperatures, with a focus on the phonon behavior in relation to the antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase transition at 26 K is presented. Significant shifts in the central frequencies of several low-frequency phonon modes were observed below 25 K, correlating with the N\'{e}el transition. Integrated Raman intensity measurements indicated a reduction in the electronic background below the AFM transition temperature, suggesting the opening of a magnetic gap. Our analysis showed no new phonon modes. Therefore, we do not see any indication of a Brillouin zone folding of phonon mode to the $\Gamma$-point in our measurement. However, the hardening of all phonon modes at low temperatures points to a strong spin-phonon coupling effect. Using a temperature-dependent model of phonon frequency, we determined the spin-phonon coupling constant $\lambda$ to be less than 0.1 cm$^{-1}$ for all frequencies, which is of the same order of magnitude as found in other antiferromagnetic materials such as MnF$_{2}$ and FeF$_{2}$ with $T_N=68~K$ and $T_N=78~K$, respectively, but significantly lower than that of $CuO$ with $T_N=213~K$., Comment: 9 pages, 13 figures

Noiseless compressive sensing is a two-steps setting that allows for undersampling a sparse signal and then reconstructing it without loss of information. The LASSO algorithm, based on $\lone$ regularization, provides an efficient and robust to address this problem, but it fails in the regime of very high compression rate. Here we present two algorithms based on $\lzero$-norm regularization instead that outperform the LASSO in terms of compression rate in the Gaussian design setting for measurement matrix. These algorithms are based on the Approximate Survey Propagation, an algorithmic family within the Approximate Message Passing class. In the large system limit, they can be rigorously tracked through State Evolution equations and it is possible to exactly predict the range compression rates for which perfect signal reconstruction is possible. We also provide a statistical physics analysis of the $\lzero$-norm noiseless compressive sensing model. We show the existence of both a replica symmetric state and a 1-step replica symmmetry broken (1RSB) state for sufficiently low $\lzero$-norm regularization. We summarize our exploratory investigation into whether Machine Learning (ML) techniques applied to publicly available professional text can substantially augment strategic planning for astronomy. We find that an approach based on Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) using content drawn from astronomy journal papers can be used to infer high-priority research areas. While the LDA models are challenging to interpret, we find that they may be strongly associated with meaningful keywords and scientific papers which allow for human interpretation of the topic models. Significant correlation is found between the results of applying these models to the previous decade of astronomical research ("1998-2010" corpus) and the contents of the science frontier panel report which contains high-priority research areas identified by the 2010 National Academies' Astronomy and Astrophysics Decadal Survey ("DS2010" corpus). Significant correlations also exist between model results of the 1998-2010 corpus and the submitted whitepapers to the Decadal Survey ("whitepapers" corpus). Importantly, we derive predictive metrics based on these results which can provide leading indicators of which content modeled by the topic models will become highly cited in the future. Using these identified metrics and the associations between papers and topic models it is possible to identify important papers for planners to consider. This paper introduces monoidal (super)categories resembling the Brauer category. For all categories, we can construct bases of the hom-spaces using Brauer diagrams. These categories include the Brauer category, its deformation the BWM-category, the periplectic Brauer category, and its deformation the periplectic $q$-Brauer category but also some new exotic categories. We show that the BWM-category is the unique deformation of the Brauer category in this framework, while the periplectic Brauer category has two deformations, which are each other monoidal opposite., Comment: 44 pages

The AAS Strategic Plan for 2021-26 called for the creation of a task force to identify how the AAS can meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. The AAS and its membership recognize the danger climate change represents to humanity and our world, and to astronomy -- as a profession, a hobby, and a cultural good. Our profession in general -- and the AAS in particular -- should work to make it possible for all astronomers to have an equal opportunity to be successful without needing to incur high carbon emissions, and to preserve astronomy for future generations. A study was completed of the carbon emissions associated with the AAS, finding that 84% of total AAS-related emissions are from in-person conferences. We also conducted a survey of AAS members to determine their attitudes about climate change. Respondents overwhelmingly (97%) think that the AAS should reduce its carbon footprint. Our task force created a list of fourteen recommendations, with two ranked as top priorities: The AAS should not schedule additional in-person meetings before 2030 and it should work to innovate the AAS conference model. Based upon our analysis it is clear that online interaction is the only way to increase participation while meaningfully decreasing emissions. Our recommendations are aligned with the Astro2020 Decadal Survey as well as AAS values to disseminate our scientific understanding of the universe, and to do our work in an ethically responsible way. Because of their other benefits -- particularly in making our society more welcoming to those who traditionally have been excluded -- we feel that these are sound decisions, worthy of implementation even if the AAS wasn't trying to reduce its carbon footprint. They simply make sense as steps towards a professional society that better serves a broader membership, as our profession evolves to be greener, more inclusive, and more productive., Comment: 46 pages

The Kramers escape problem is a paradigmatic model for the kinetics of rare events, which are usually characterized by Arrhenius law. So far, analytical approaches have failed to capture the kinetics of rare events in the important case of non-Markovian processes with long-term memory, as occurs in the context of reactions involving proteins, long polymers, or strongly viscoelastic fluids. Here, based on a minimal model of non-Markovian Gaussian process with long-term memory, we determine quantitatively the mean FPT to a rare configuration and provide its asymptotics in the limit of a large energy barrier $E$. Our analysis unveils a correction to Arrhenius law, induced by long-term memory, which we determine analytically. This correction, which we show can be quantitatively significant, takes the form of a second effective energy barrier $E'

We consider a prototypical problem of Bayesian inference for a structured spiked model: a low-rank signal is corrupted by additive noise. While both information-theoretic and algorithmic limits are well understood when the noise is a Gaussian Wigner matrix, the more realistic case of structured noise still proves to be challenging. To capture the structure while maintaining mathematical tractability, a line of work has focused on rotationally invariant noise. However, existing studies either provide sub-optimal algorithms or are limited to special cases of noise ensembles. In this paper, using tools from statistical physics (replica method) and random matrix theory (generalized spherical integrals) we establish the first characterization of the information-theoretic limits for a noise matrix drawn from a general trace ensemble. Remarkably, our analysis unveils the asymptotic equivalence between the rotationally invariant model and a surrogate Gaussian one. Finally, we show how to saturate the predicted statistical limits using an efficient algorithm inspired by the theory of adaptive Thouless-Anderson-Palmer (TAP) equations.

The near-infrared calibration unit (NI-CU) on board Euclid's Near-Infrared Spectrometer and Photometer (NISP) is the first astronomical calibration lamp based on light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to be operated in space. Euclid is a mission in ESA's Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 framework, to explore the dark universe and provide a next-level characterisation of the nature of gravitation, dark matter, and dark energy. Calibrating photometric and spectrometric measurements of galaxies to better than 1.5% accuracy in a survey homogeneously mapping ~14000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky requires a very detailed characterisation of near-infrared (NIR) detector properties, as well their constant monitoring in flight. To cover two of the main contributions - relative pixel-to-pixel sensitivity and non-linearity characteristics - as well as support other calibration activities, NI-CU was designed to provide spatially approximately homogeneous (<12% variations) and temporally stable illumination (0.1%-0.2% over 1200s) over the NISP detector plane, with minimal power consumption and energy dissipation. NI-CU is covers the spectral range ~[900,1900] nm - at cryo-operating temperature - at 5 fixed independent wavelengths to capture wavelength-dependent behaviour of the detectors, with fluence over a dynamic range of >=100 from ~15 ph s^-1 pixel^-1 to >1500 ph s^-1 pixel^-1. For this functionality, NI-CU is based on LEDs. We describe the rationale behind the decision and design process, describe the challenges in sourcing the right LEDs, as well as the qualification process and lessons learned. We also provide a description of the completed NI-CU, its capabilities and performance as well as its limits. The Near-Infrared Spectrometer and Photometer (NISP) on board the Euclid satellite provides multiband photometry and R>=450 slitless grism spectroscopy in the 950-2020nm wavelength range. In this reference article we illuminate the background of NISP's functional and calibration requirements, describe the instrument's integral components, and provide all its key properties. We also sketch the processes needed to understand how NISP operates and is calibrated, and its technical potentials and limitations. Links to articles providing more details and technical background are included. NISP's 16 HAWAII-2RG (H2RG) detectors with a plate scale of 0.3" pix^-1 deliver a field-of-view of 0.57deg^2. In photo mode, NISP reaches a limiting magnitude of ~24.5AB mag in three photometric exposures of about 100s exposure time, for point sources and with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 5. For spectroscopy, NISP's point-source sensitivity is a SNR = 3.5 detection of an emission line with flux ~2x10^-16erg/s/cm^2 integrated over two resolution elements of 13.4A, in 3x560s grism exposures at 1.6 mu (redshifted Ha). Our calibration includes on-ground and in-flight characterisation and monitoring of detector baseline, dark current, non-linearity, and sensitivity, to guarantee a relative photometric accuracy of better than 1.5%, and relative spectrophotometry to better than 0.7%. The wavelength calibration must be better than 5A. NISP is the state-of-the-art instrument in the NIR for all science beyond small areas available from HST and JWST - and an enormous advance due to its combination of field size and high throughput of telescope and instrument. During Euclid's 6-year survey covering 14000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky, NISP will be the backbone for determining distances of more than a billion galaxies. The current standard model of cosmology successfully describes a variety of measurements, but the nature of its main ingredients, dark matter and dark energy, remains unknown. Euclid is a medium-class mission in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) that will provide high-resolution optical imaging, as well as near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, over about 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky. In addition to accurate weak lensing and clustering measurements that probe structure formation over half of the age of the Universe, its primary probes for cosmology, these exquisite data will enable a wide range of science. This paper provides a high-level overview of the mission, summarising the survey characteristics, the various data-processing steps, and data products. Using standard results from statistics, we show that for any continuous quantum system (Gaussian or otherwise) and any observable $\widehat{A}$ (position or otherwise), the distribution $\pi_{a}\left(t\right)$ of time measurement at a fixed state $a$ can be inferred from the distribution $\rho_{t}\left( a\right)$ of a state measurement at a fixed time $t$ via the transformation $\pi_{a}(t) \propto \left\vert \frac{\partial }{\partial t} \int_{-\infty }^a \rho_t(u) du \right\vert$. This finding suggests that the answer to the long-lasting time-of-arrival problem is in fact secretly hidden within the Born rule, and therefore does not require the introduction of a time operator or a commitment to a specific (e.g., Bohmian) ontology. The generality and versatility of the result are illustrated by applications to the time-of-arrival at a given location for a free particle in a superposed state and to the time required to reach a given velocity for a free-falling quantum particle. Gravitational waves from black-hole merging events have revealed a population of extra-galactic BHs residing in short-period binaries with masses that are higher than expected based on most stellar evolution models - and also higher than known stellar-origin black holes in our Galaxy. It has been proposed that those high-mass BHs are the remnants of massive metal-poor stars. Gaia astrometry is expected to uncover many Galactic wide-binary systems containing dormant BHs, which may not have been detected before. The study of this population will provide new information on the BH-mass distribution in binaries and shed light on their formation mechanisms and progenitors. As part of the validation efforts in preparation for the fourth Gaia data release (DR4), we analysed the preliminary astrometric binary solutions, obtained by the Gaia Non-Single Star pipeline, to verify their significance and to minimise false-detection rates in high-mass-function orbital solutions. The astrometric binary solution of one source, Gaia BH3, implies the presence of a 32.70 \pm 0.82 M\odot BH in a binary system with a period of 11.6 yr. Gaia radial velocities independently validate the astrometric orbit. Broad-band photometric and spectroscopic data show that the visible component is an old, very metal-poor giant of the Galactic halo, at a distance of 590 pc. The BH in the Gaia BH3 system is more massive than any other Galactic stellar-origin BH known thus far. The low metallicity of the star companion supports the scenario that metal-poor massive stars are progenitors of the high-mass BHs detected by gravitational-wave telescopes. The Galactic orbit of the system and its metallicity indicate that it might belong to the Sequoia halo substructure. Accurate trajectory forecasting is crucial for the performance of various systems, such as advanced driver-assistance systems and self-driving vehicles. These forecasts allow to anticipate events leading to collisions and, therefore, to mitigate them. Deep Neural Networks have excelled in motion forecasting, but issues like overconfidence and uncertainty quantification persist. Deep Ensembles address these concerns, yet applying them to multimodal distributions remains challenging. In this paper, we propose a novel approach named Hierarchical Light Transformer Ensembles (HLT-Ens), aimed at efficiently training an ensemble of Transformer architectures using a novel hierarchical loss function. HLT-Ens leverages grouped fully connected layers, inspired by grouped convolution techniques, to capture multimodal distributions, effectively. Through extensive experimentation, we demonstrate that HLT-Ens achieves state-of-the-art performance levels, offering a promising avenue for improving trajectory forecasting techniques., Comment: acknowledgement added

We consider a statistical model for symmetric matrix factorization with additive Gaussian noise in the high-dimensional regime where the rank $M$ of the signal matrix to infer scales with its size $N$ as $M = o(N^{1/10})$. Allowing for a $N$-dependent rank offers new challenges and requires new methods. Working in the Bayesian-optimal setting, we show that whenever the signal has i.i.d. entries the limiting mutual information between signal and data is given by a variational formula involving a rank-one replica symmetric potential. In other words, from the information-theoretic perspective, the case of a (slowly) growing rank is the same as when $M = 1$ (namely, the standard spiked Wigner model). The proof is primarily based on a novel multiscale cavity method allowing for growing rank along with some information-theoretic identities on worst noise for the Gaussian vector channel. We believe that the cavity method developed here will play a role in the analysis of a broader class of inference and spin models where the degrees of freedom are large arrays instead of vectors.

Current techniques of neuroimaging, including electrical devices, are either of low spatiotemporal resolution or invasive, impeding multiscale monitoring of brain activity at both single cell and network levels. Overcoming this issue is of great importance to assess brain's computational ability and for neurorehabilitation projects that require real-time monitoring of neurons and concomitant networks activities. Currently, that information could be extracted from functional MRI when combined with mathematical models. Novel methods enabling quantitative and long-lasting recording at both single cell and network levels will allow to correlate the MRI data with intracortical activity at single cell level, and to refine those models. Here, we report the fabrication and validation of ultra-thin, optically transparent and flexible intracortical microelectrode arrays for combining extracellular multi-unit and fMRI recordings. The sensing devices are compatible with large-scale manufacturing, and demonstrate both fMRI transparency at 4.7 T, and high electrical performance, and thus appears as a promising candidate for simultaneous multiscale neurodynamic measurements.

Entropy maximization and free energy minimization are general physical principles for modeling the dynamics of various physical systems. Notable examples include modeling decision-making within the brain using the free-energy principle, optimizing the accuracy-complexity trade-off when accessing hidden variables with the information bottleneck principle (Tishby et al., 2000), and navigation in random environments using information maximization (Vergassola et al., 2007). Built on this principle, we propose a new class of bandit algorithms that maximize an approximation to the information of a key variable within the system. To this end, we develop an approximated analytical physics-based representation of an entropy to forecast the information gain of each action and greedily choose the one with the largest information gain. This method yields strong performances in classical bandit settings. Motivated by its empirical success, we prove its asymptotic optimality for the two-armed bandit problem with Gaussian rewards. Owing to its ability to encompass the system's properties in a global physical functional, this approach can be efficiently adapted to more complex bandit settings, calling for further investigation of information maximization approaches for multi-armed bandit problems.

Gaia's readout window strategy is challenged by very dense fields in the sky. Therefore, in addition to standard Gaia observations, full Sky Mapper (SM) images were recorded for nine selected regions in the sky. A new software pipeline exploits these Service Interface Function (SIF) images of crowded fields (CFs), making use of the availability of the full two-dimensional (2D) information. This new pipeline produced half a million additional Gaia sources in the region of the omega Centauri ($\omega$ Cen) cluster, which are published with this Focused Product Release. We discuss the dedicated SIF CF data reduction pipeline, validate its data products, and introduce their Gaia archive table. Our aim is to improve the completeness of the {\it Gaia} source inventory in a very dense region in the sky, $\omega$ Cen. An adapted version of {\it Gaia}'s Source Detection and Image Parameter Determination software located sources in the 2D SIF CF images. We validated the results by comparing them to the public {\it Gaia} DR3 catalogue and external Hubble Space Telescope data. With this Focused Product Release, 526\,587 new sources have been added to the {\it Gaia} catalogue in $\omega$ Cen. Apart from positions and brightnesses, the additional catalogue contains parallaxes and proper motions, but no meaningful colour information. While SIF CF source parameters generally have a lower precision than nominal {\it Gaia} sources, in the cluster centre they increase the depth of the combined catalogue by three magnitudes and improve the source density by a factor of ten. This first SIF CF data publication already adds great value to the {\it Gaia} catalogue. It demonstrates what to expect for the fourth {\it Gaia} catalogue, which will contain additional sources for all nine SIF CF regions.

Context. Strongly lensed quasars are fundamental sources for cosmology. The Gaia space mission covers the entire sky with the unprecedented resolution of $0.18$" in the optical, making it an ideal instrument to search for gravitational lenses down to the limiting magnitude of 21. Nevertheless, the previous Gaia Data Releases are known to be incomplete for small angular separations such as those expected for most lenses. Aims. We present the Data Processing and Analysis Consortium GravLens pipeline, which was built to analyse all Gaia detections around quasars and to cluster them into sources, thus producing a catalogue of secondary sources around each quasar. We analysed the resulting catalogue to produce scores that indicate source configurations that are compatible with strongly lensed quasars. Methods. GravLens uses the DBSCAN unsupervised clustering algorithm to detect sources around quasars. The resulting catalogue of multiplets is then analysed with several methods to identify potential gravitational lenses. We developed and applied an outlier scoring method, a comparison between the average BP and RP spectra of the components, and we also used an extremely randomised tree algorithm. These methods produce scores to identify the most probable configurations and to establish a list of lens candidates. Results. We analysed the environment of 3 760 032 quasars. A total of 4 760 920 sources, including the quasars, were found within 6" of the quasar positions. This list is given in the Gaia archive. In 87\% of cases, the quasar remains a single source, and in 501 385 cases neighbouring sources were detected. We propose a list of 381 lensed candidates, of which we identified 49 as the most promising. The third Gaia Data Release (DR3) provided photometric time series of more than 2 million long-period variable (LPV) candidates. Anticipating the publication of full radial-velocity (RV) in DR4, this Focused Product Release (FPR) provides RV time series for a selection of LPVs with high-quality observations. We describe the production and content of the Gaia catalog of LPV RV time series, and the methods used to compute variability parameters published in the Gaia FPR. Starting from the DR3 LPVs catalog, we applied filters to construct a sample of sources with high-quality RV measurements. We modeled their RV and photometric time series to derive their periods and amplitudes, and further refined the sample by requiring compatibility between the RV period and at least one of the $G$, $G_{\rm BP}$, or $G_{\rm RP}$ photometric periods. The catalog includes RV time series and variability parameters for 9\,614 sources in the magnitude range $6\lesssim G/{\rm mag}\lesssim 14$, including a flagged top-quality subsample of 6\,093 stars whose RV periods are fully compatible with the values derived from the $G$, $G_{\rm BP}$, and $G_{\rm RP}$ photometric time series. The RV time series contain a mean of 24 measurements per source taken unevenly over a duration of about three years. We identify the great most sources (88%) as genuine LPVs, with about half of them showing a pulsation period and the other half displaying a long secondary period. The remaining 12% consists of candidate ellipsoidal binaries. Quality checks against RVs available in the literature show excellent agreement. We provide illustrative examples and cautionary remarks. The publication of RV time series for almost 10\,000 LPVs constitutes, by far, the largest such database available to date in the literature. We study the random binary symmetric perceptron problem, focusing on the behavior of rare high-margin solutions. While most solutions are isolated, we demonstrate that these rare solutions are part of clusters of extensive entropy, heuristically corresponding to non-trivial fixed points of an approximate message-passing algorithm. We enumerate these clusters via a local entropy, defined as a Franz-Parisi potential, which we rigorously evaluate using the first and second moment methods in the limit of a small constraint density $\alpha$ (corresponding to vanishing margin $\kappa$) under a certain assumption on the concentration of the entropy. This examination unveils several intriguing phenomena: i) We demonstrate that these clusters have an entropic barrier in the sense that the entropy as a function of the distance from the reference high-margin solution is non-monotone when $\kappa \le 1.429 \sqrt{-\alpha/\log{\alpha}}$, while it is monotone otherwise, and that they have an energetic barrier in the sense that there are no solutions at an intermediate distance from the reference solution when $\kappa \le 1.239 \sqrt{-\alpha/ \log{\alpha}}$. The critical scaling of the margin $\kappa$ in $\sqrt{-\alpha/\log\alpha}$ corresponds to the one obtained from the earlier work of Gamarnik et al. (2022) for the overlap-gap property, a phenomenon known to present a barrier to certain efficient algorithms. ii) We establish using the replica method that the complexity (the logarithm of the number of clusters of such solutions) versus entropy (the logarithm of the number of solutions in the clusters) curves are partly non-concave and correspond to very large values of the Parisi parameter, with the equilibrium being reached when the Parisi parameter diverges., Comment: 26 pages, 6 figures

We carry out an information-theoretical analysis of a two-layer neural network trained from input-output pairs generated by a teacher network with matching architecture, in overparametrized regimes. Our results come in the form of bounds relating i) the mutual information between training data and network weights, or ii) the Bayes-optimal generalization error, to the same quantities but for a simpler (generalized) linear model for which explicit expressions are rigorously known. Our bounds, which are expressed in terms of the number of training samples, input dimension and number of hidden units, thus yield fundamental performance limits for any neural network (and actually any learning procedure) trained from limited data generated according to our two-layer teacher neural network model. The proof relies on rigorous tools from spin glasses and is guided by ``Gaussian equivalence principles'' lying at the core of numerous recent analyses of neural networks. With respect to the existing literature, which is either non-rigorous or restricted to the case of the learning of the readout weights only, our results are information-theoretic (i.e. are not specific to any learning algorithm) and, importantly, cover a setting where all the network parameters are trained., Comment: 30 pages, 1 figure

This paper addresses the exploration-exploitation dilemma inherent in decision-making, focusing on multi-armed bandit problems. The problems involve an agent deciding whether to exploit current knowledge for immediate gains or explore new avenues for potential long-term rewards. We here introduce a novel algorithm, approximate information maximization (AIM), which employs an analytical approximation of the entropy gradient to choose which arm to pull at each point in time. AIM matches the performance of Infomax and Thompson sampling while also offering enhanced computational speed, determinism, and tractability. Empirical evaluation of AIM indicates its compliance with the Lai-Robbins asymptotic bound and demonstrates its robustness for a range of priors. Its expression is tunable, which allows for specific optimization in various settings.

In this paper, we propose an optimization-based adversarial attack against Neural Machine Translation (NMT) models. First, we propose an optimization problem to generate adversarial examples that are semantically similar to the original sentences but destroy the translation generated by the target NMT model. This optimization problem is discrete, and we propose a continuous relaxation to solve it. With this relaxation, we find a probability distribution for each token in the adversarial example, and then we can generate multiple adversarial examples by sampling from these distributions. Experimental results show that our attack significantly degrades the translation quality of multiple NMT models while maintaining the semantic similarity between the original and adversarial sentences. Furthermore, our attack outperforms the baselines in terms of success rate, similarity preservation, effect on translation quality, and token error rate. Finally, we propose a black-box extension of our attack by sampling from an optimized probability distribution for a reference model whose gradients are accessible.

The shot noise in tunneling experiments reflects the Poissonian nature of the tunneling process. The shot noise power is proportional to both the magnitude of the current and the effective charge of the carrier. Shot noise spectroscopy thus enables, in principle, to determine the effective charge q of the charge carriers that tunnel. This can be used to detect electron pairing in superconductors: in the normal state, the noise corresponds to single electron tunneling (q = 1e), while in the paired state, the noise corresponds to q = 2e. Here, we use a newly developed amplifier to reveal that in typical mesoscopic superconducting junctions, the shot noise does not reflect the signatures of pairing and instead stays at a level corresponding to q = 1e. We show that transparency can control the shot noise and this q = 1e is due to the large number of tunneling channels with each having very low transparency. Our results indicate that in typical mesoscopic superconducting junctions one should expect q = 1e noise, and lead to design guidelines for junctions that allow the detection of electron pairing.

The inference of a large symmetric signal-matrix $\mathbf{S} \in \mathbb{R}^{N\times N}$ corrupted by additive Gaussian noise, is considered for two regimes of growth of the rank $M$ as a function of $N$. For sub-linear ranks $M=\Theta(N^\alpha)$ with $\alpha\in(0,1)$ the mutual information and minimum mean-square error (MMSE) are derived for two classes of signal-matrices: (a) $\mathbf{S}=\mathbf{X}\mathbf{X}^\intercal$ with entries of $\mathbf{X}\in\mathbb{R}^{N\times M}$ independent identically distributed; (b) $\mathbf{S}$ sampled from a rotationally invariant distribution. Surprisingly, the formulas match the rank-one case. Two efficient algorithms are explored and conjectured to saturate the MMSE when no statistical-to-computational gap is present: (1) Decimation Approximate Message Passing; (2) a spectral algorithm based on a Rotation Invariant Estimator. For linear ranks $M=\Theta(N)$ the mutual information is rigorously derived for signal-matrices from a rotationally invariant distribution. Close connections with scalar inference in free probability are uncovered, which allow to deduce a simple formula for the MMSE as an integral involving the limiting spectral measure of the data matrix only. An interesting issue is whether the known information theoretic phase transitions for rank-one, and hence also sub-linear-rank, still persist in linear-rank. Our analysis suggests that only a smoothed-out trace of the transitions persists. Furthermore, the change of behavior between low and truly high-rank regimes only happens at the linear scale $\alpha=1$.

MR vascular Fingerprinting proposes to use the MR Fingerprinting framework to quantitatively and simultaneously map several microvascular characteristics at a sub-voxel scale. The initial implementation assessed the local blood oxygenation saturation (SO 2), blood volume fraction (BVf) and vessel averaged radius (R) in humans and rodent brains using simple 2D representations of the vascular network during dictionary generation. In order to improve the results and possibly extend the approach to pathological environments and other biomarkers, we propose in this study to use 3D realistic vascular geometries in the numerical simulations. 28,000 different synthetic voxels containing vascular networks segmented from whole brain healthy mice microscopy images were created. A Bayesian-based regression model was used for map reconstruction. We show on 8 healthy and 9 tumor bearing rats that realistic vascular representations yield microvascular estimates in better agreement with the literature than 2D or 3D cylindrical models. Furthermore, tumoral blood oxygenation estimates obtained with the proposed approach are the only ones correlating with in vivo optic-fiber measurements performed in the same animals.

Noiseless compressive sensing is a protocol that enables undersampling and later recovery of a signal without loss of information. This compression is possible because the signal is usually sufficiently sparse in a given basis. Currently, the algorithm offering the best tradeoff between compression rate, robustness, and speed for compressive sensing is the LASSO (l1-norm bias) algorithm. However, many studies have pointed out the possibility that the implementation of lp-norms biases, with p smaller than one, could give better performance while sacrificing convexity. In this work, we focus specifically on the extreme case of the l0-based reconstruction, a task that is complicated by the discontinuity of the loss. In the first part of the paper, we describe via statistical physics methods, and in particular the replica method, how the solutions to this optimization problem are arranged in a clustered structure. We observe two distinct regimes: one at low compression rate where the signal can be recovered exactly, and one at high compression rate where the signal cannot be recovered accurately. In the second part, we present two message-passing algorithms based on our first results for the l0-norm optimization problem. The proposed algorithms are able to recover the signal at compression rates higher than the ones achieved by LASSO while being computationally efficient.

Kantor pairs, (quadratic) Jordan pairs, and similar structures have been instrumental in the study of $\mathbb{Z}$-graded Lie algebras and algebraic groups. We introduce the notion of an operator Kantor pair, a generalization of Kantor pairs to arbitrary (commutative, unital) rings, similar in spirit as to how quadratic Jordan pairs and algebras generalize linear Jordan pairs and algebras. Such an operator Kantor pair is formed by a pair of $\Phi$-groups $(G^+,G^-)$ of a specific kind, equipped with certain homogeneous operators. For each such a pair $(G^+,G^-)$, we construct a $5$-graded Lie algebra $L$ together with actions of $G^\pm$ on $L$ as automorphisms. Moreover, we can associate a group $G(G^+,G^-) \subset \operatorname{Aut}(L)$ to this pair generalizing the projective elementary group of Jordan pairs. If the non-$0$-graded part of $L$ is projective, we can uniquely recover $G^+,G^-$ from $G(G^+,G^-)$ and the grading on $L$ alone. We establish, over rings $\Phi$ with $1/30 \in \Phi$, a one to one correspondence between Kantor pairs and operator Kantor pairs. Sparse regression codes (SPARCs) are a promising coding scheme that can approach the Shannon limit over Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channels. Previous works have proven the capacity-achieving property of SPARCs with Gaussian design matrices. We generalize these results to right orthogonally invariant ensembles that allow for more structured design matrices. With the Vector Approximate Message Passing (VAMP) decoder, we rigorously demonstrate the exponentially decaying error probability for design matrices that satisfy a certain criterion with the exponentially decaying power allocation. For other spectra, we design a new power allocation scheme to show that the information theoretical threshold is achievable.

In this paper we describe an approach to generalise minimal representations to the super setting for Lie superalgebras obtained from Jordan superalgebras using the TKK construction. This approach was used successfully to construct a Fock model, a Schr\"odinger model and intertwining Segal-Bargmann transform for the orthosymplectic Lie supergroup $\mathop{OSp}(p,q|2n)$ and the exceptional Lie supergroup $\mathbb{D}(2,1;\alpha)$. We study the performance of a Bayesian statistician who estimates a rank-one signal corrupted by non-symmetric rotationally invariant noise with a generic distribution of singular values. As the signal-to-noise ratio and the noise structure are unknown, a Gaussian setup is incorrectly assumed. We derive the exact analytic expression for the error of the mismatched Bayes estimator and also provide the analysis of an approximate message passing (AMP) algorithm. The first result exploits the asymptotic behavior of spherical integrals for rectangular matrices and of low-rank matrix perturbations; the second one relies on the design and analysis of an auxiliary AMP. The numerical experiments show that there is a performance gap between the AMP and Bayes estimators, which is due to the incorrect estimation of the signal norm.

Ecosystems represent archetypal complex dynamical systems, often modelled by coupled differential equations of the form $$ \frac{d x_i}{d t} = x_i \varphi_i(x_1,\cdots, x_N)\ , $$ where $N$ represents the number of species and $x_i$, the abundance of species $i$. Among these families of coupled diffential equations, Lotka-Volterra (LV) equations $$ \frac{d x_i}{d t} = x_i ( r_i - x_i +(\Gamma \mathbf{x})_i)\ , $$ play a privileged role, as the LV model represents an acceptable trade-off between complexity and tractability. Here, $r_i$ represents the intrinsic growth of species $i$ and $\Gamma$ stands for the interaction matrix: $\Gamma_{ij}$ represents the effect of species $j$ over species $i$. For large $N$, estimating matrix $\Gamma$ is often an overwhelming task and an alternative is to draw $\Gamma$ at random, parametrizing its statistical distribution by a limited number of model features. Dealing with large random matrices, we naturally rely on Random Matrix Theory (RMT). The aim of this review article is to present an overview of the work at the junction of theoretical ecology and large random matrix theory. It is intended to an interdisciplinary audience spanning theoretical ecology, complex systems, statistical physics and mathematical biology.

Quantum backflow refers to the counterintuitive fact that the probability can flow in the direction opposite to the momentum of a quantum particle. This phenomenon has been seen to be small and fragile for one-dimensional systems, in which the maximal amount of backflow has been found to be bounded. Quantum backflow exhibits dramatically different features in two-dimensional systems that, contrary to the one-dimensional case, allow for degenerate energy eigenstates. Here we investigate the case of a charged particle that is confined to move on a finite disk punctured at the center and that is pierced through the center, and normally to the disk, by a magnetic flux line. We demonstrate that quantum backflow can be unbounded (in a certain sense), which makes this system a promising physical platform regarding the yet-to-be-performed experimental observation of this fundamental quantum phenomenon., Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure

The NISP (Near Infrared Spectrometer and Photometer) is one of the two Euclid instruments. It operates in the near-IR spectral region (950-2020nm) as a photometer and spectrometer. The instrument is composed of: a cold (135 K) optomechanical subsystem consisting of a Silicon carbide structure, an optical assembly, a filter wheel mechanism, a grism wheel mechanism, a calibration unit, and a thermal control system, a detection system based on a mosaic of 16 H2RG with their front-end readout electronic, and a warm electronic system (290 K) composed of a data processing / detector control unit and of an instrument control unit that interfaces with the spacecraft via a 1553 bus for command and control and via Spacewire links for science data. How do statistical dependencies in measurement noise influence high-dimensional inference? To answer this, we study the paradigmatic spiked matrix model of principal components analysis (PCA), where a rank-one matrix is corrupted by additive noise. We go beyond the usual independence assumption on the noise entries, by drawing the noise from a low-order polynomial orthogonal matrix ensemble. The resulting noise correlations make the setting relevant for applications but analytically challenging. We provide the first characterization of the Bayes-optimal limits of inference in this model. If the spike is rotation-invariant, we show that standard spectral PCA is optimal. However, for more general priors, both PCA and the existing approximate message passing algorithm (AMP) fall short of achieving the information-theoretic limits, which we compute using the replica method from statistical mechanics. We thus propose a novel AMP, inspired by the theory of Adaptive Thouless-Anderson-Palmer equations, which saturates the theoretical limit. This AMP comes with a rigorous state evolution analysis tracking its performance. Although we focus on specific noise distributions, our methodology can be generalized to a wide class of trace matrix ensembles at the cost of more involved expressions. Finally, despite the seemingly strong assumption of rotation-invariant noise, our theory empirically predicts algorithmic performance on real data, pointing at remarkable universality properties.

Tracking detectors are of vital importance for collider-based high energy physics (HEP) experiments. The primary purpose of tracking detectors is the precise reconstruction of charged particle trajectories and the reconstruction of secondary vertices. The performance requirements from the community posed by the future collider experiments require an evolution of tracking systems, necessitating the development of new techniques, materials and technologies in order to fully exploit their physics potential. Euclid is a major ESA mission scheduled for launch in 2023-2024 to map the geometry of the dark Universe using two primary probes, weak gravitational lensing and galaxy clustering. \Euclid's instruments, a visible imager (VIS) and an infrared spectrometer and photometer (NISP) have both been designed and built by Euclid Consortium teams. The NISP instrument will hold a large focal plane array of 16 near-infrared H2RG detectors, which are key elements to the performance of the NISP, and therefore to the science return of the mission. Euclid NISP H2RG flight detectors have been individually and thoroughly characterized at Centre de Physique des Particules de Marseille (CPPM) during a whole year with a view to producing a reference database of performance pixel maps. Analyses have been ongoing and have shown the relevance of taking into account spatial variations in deriving performance parameters. This paper will concentrate on interpixel capacitance (IPC) and conversion gain. First, per pixel IPC coefficient maps will be derived thanks to single pixel reset (SPR) measurements and a new IPC correction method will be defined and validated. Then, the paper will look into correlation effects of IPC and their impact on the derivation of per super-pixel IPC-free conversion gain maps. For the next multi-megawatt accelerator generation, targets and other beam-intercepting components will face even more severe challenges due to the higher power densities, higher energy, and higher radiation. A comprehensive research and development program must be implemented to address the challenges. International collaborations such as RaDIATE or High Power Targetry Workshop should be leveraged and expanded to accelerate knowledge gain and avoid duplicated efforts. The next generation of high power targets will need novel designs allowing better high heat flux cooling methods, novel materials, advanced simulations, and better instrumentation. Four main R&D tracks were identified and discussed for targets. For electron sources, current state of art and challenges we are facing for key components such as cathodes, guns and injector design for sources R&D are presented for highly polarized electrons and unpolarized high current high brightness beams. For ion sources such as electron cyclotron resonance ion source (ECRIS), laser ion source (LIS), charge breeders, status of development are reviewed, and areas require investment for future R&D are discussed separately. We introduce per-halfedge texturing (Htex) a GPU-friendly method for texturing arbitrary polygon-meshes without an explicit parameterization. Htex builds upon the insight that halfedges encode an intrinsic triangulation for polygon meshes, where each halfedge spans a unique triangle with direct adjacency information. Rather than storing a separate texture per face of the input mesh as is done by previous parameterization-free texturing methods, Htex stores a square texture for each halfedge and its twin. We show that this simple change from face to halfedge induces two important properties for high performance parameterization-free texturing. First, Htex natively supports arbitrary polygons without requiring dedicated code for, e.g, non-quad faces. Second, Htex leads to a straightforward and efficient GPU implementation that uses only three texture-fetches per halfedge to produce continuous texturing across the entire mesh. We demonstrate the effectiveness of Htex by rendering production assets in real time.

In this work, we explore a change of paradigm to build Precomputed Radiance Transfer (PRT) methods in a data-driven way. This paradigm shift allows us to alleviate the difficulties of building traditional PRT methods such as defining a reconstruction basis, coding a dedicated path tracer to compute a transfer function, etc. Our objective is to pave the way for Machine Learned methods by providing a simple baseline algorithm. More specifically, we demonstrate real-time rendering of indirect illumination in hair and surfaces from a few measurements of direct lighting. We build our baseline from pairs of direct and indirect illumination renderings using only standard tools such as Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) to extract both the reconstruction basis and transfer function.

We consider the problem of estimating a rank-1 signal corrupted by structured rotationally invariant noise, and address the following question: how well do inference algorithms perform when the noise statistics is unknown and hence Gaussian noise is assumed? While the matched Bayes-optimal setting with unstructured noise is well understood, the analysis of this mismatched problem is only at its premises. In this paper, we make a step towards understanding the effect of the strong source of mismatch which is the noise statistics. Our main technical contribution is the rigorous analysis of a Bayes estimator and of an approximate message passing (AMP) algorithm, both of which incorrectly assume a Gaussian setup. The first result exploits the theory of spherical integrals and of low-rank matrix perturbations; the idea behind the second one is to design and analyze an artificial AMP which, by taking advantage of the flexibility in the denoisers, is able to "correct" the mismatch. Armed with these sharp asymptotic characterizations, we unveil a rich and often unexpected phenomenology. For example, despite AMP is in principle designed to efficiently compute the Bayes estimator, the former is outperformed by the latter in terms of mean-square error. We show that this performance gap is due to an incorrect estimation of the signal norm. In fact, when the SNR is large enough, the overlaps of the AMP and the Bayes estimator coincide, and they even match those of optimal estimators taking into account the structure of the noise.
