The homogenization procedure developed here is conducted on a laminate with periodic space-time modulation on the fine scale: at leading order, this modulation creates convection in the low-wavelength regime if both parameters are modulated. However, if only one parameter is modulated, which is more realistic, this convective term disappears and one recovers a standard diffusion equation with effective homogeneous parameters; this does not describe the non-reciprocity and the propagation of the field observed from exact dispersion diagrams. This inconsistency is corrected here by considering second-order homogenization which results in a non-reciprocal propagation term that is proved to be non-zero for any laminate and verified via numerical simulation. The same methodology is also applied to the case when the density is modulated in the heat equation, leading therefore to a corrective advective term which cancels out non-reciprocity at the leading order but not at the second order.

Laminated media with material properties modulated in space and time in the form of travelling waves have long been known to exhibit non-reciprocity. However, when using the method of low frequency homogenisation, it was so far only possible to obtain non-reciprocal effective media when both material properties are modulated in time, in the form of a Willis-coupling (or bi-anisotropy in electromagnetism) model. If only one of the two properties is modulated in time, while the other is kept constant, it was thought impossible for the method of homogenisation to recover the expected non-reciprocity since this Willis-coupling coefficient then vanishes. Contrary to this belief, we show that effective media with a single time-modulated parameter are non-reciprocal, provided homogenization is pushed to the second order. This is illustrated by numerical experiments (dispersion diagrams and time-domain simulations) for a bilayered modulated medium.

We analyze a spatially extended version of a well-known model of forest-savanna dynamics, which presents as a system of nonlinear partial integro-differential equations, and study necessary conditions for pattern-forming bifurcations. Analytically, we show that homogeneous solutions dominate the dynamics of the standard forest-savanna model, regardless of the length scales of the various spatial processes considered. However, several different pattern-forming scenarios are possible upon including spatial resource limitation, such as competition for water, soil nutrients, or herbivory effects. Using numerical simulations and continuation, we study the nature of the resulting patterns as a function of system parameters and length scales, uncovering subcritical pattern-forming bifurcations and observing significant regions of multistability for realistic parameter regimes. Finally, we discuss our results in the context of extant savanna-forest modeling efforts and highlight ongoing challenges in building a unifying mathematical model for savannas across different rainfall levels., Comment: 27 pages, 7 figures

High-frequency homogenization is used to study dispersive media, containing inclusions placed periodically, for which the properties of the material depend on the frequency (Lorentz or Drude model with damping, for example). Effective properties are obtained near a given point of the dispersion diagram in frequency-wavenumber space. The asymptotic approximations of the dispersion diagrams, and the wavefields, so obtained are then cross-validated via detailed comparison with finite element method simulations in both one and two dimensions.

Spatial systems with heterogeneities are ubiquitous in nature, from precipitation, temperature and soil gradients controlling vegetation growth to morphogen gradients controlling gene expression in embryos. Such systems, generally described by nonlinear dynamical systems, often display complex parameter dependence and exhibit bifurcations. The dynamics of heterogeneous spatially extended systems passing through bifurcations are still relatively poorly understood, yet recent theoretical studies and experimental data highlight the resulting complex behaviors and their relevance to real-world applications. We explore the consequences of spatial heterogeneities passing through bifurcations via two examples strongly motivated by applications. These model systems illustrate that studying heterogeneity-induced behaviors in spatial systems is crucial for a better understanding of ecological transitions and functional organization in brain development., Comment: 28 pages

The space mission MICROSCOPE dedicated to the test of the Equivalence Principle (EP) operated from April 25, 2016 until the deactivation of the satellite on October 16, 2018. In this analysis we compare the free-fall accelerations ($a_{\rm A}$ and $a_{\rm B}$) of two test masses in terms of the E\"otv\"os parameter $\eta({\rm{A, B}}) = 2 \frac{a_{\rm A}- a_{\rm B}}{a_{\rm A}+ a_{\rm B}}$. No EP violation has been detected for two test masses, made from platinum and titanium alloys, in a sequence of 19 segments lasting from 13 to 198 hours down to the limit of the statistical error which is smaller than $10^{-14}$ for $ \eta({\rm{Ti, Pt}})$. Accumulating data from all segments leads to $\eta({\rm{Ti, Pt}}) =[-1.5\pm{}2.3{\rm (stat)}\pm{}1.5{\rm (syst)}] \times{}10^{-15}$ showing no EP violation at the level of $2.7\times{}10^{-15}$ if we combine stochastic and systematic errors quadratically. This represents an improvement of almost two orders of magnitude with respect to the previous best such test performed by the E\"ot-Wash group. The reliability of this limit has been verified by comparing the free falls of two test masses of the same composition (platinum) leading to a null E\"otv\"os parameter with a statistical uncertainty of $1.1\times{}10^{-15}$., Comment: Class. The MICROSCOPE mission was designed to test the Weak Equivalence Principle (WEP), stating the equality between the inertial and the gravitational masses, with a precision of $10^{-15}$ in terms of the E\"otv\"os ratio $\eta$. Its experimental test consisted of comparing the accelerations undergone by two collocated test masses of different compositions as they orbited the Earth, by measuring the electrostatic forces required to keep them in equilibrium. This was done with ultra-sensitive differential electrostatic accelerometers onboard a drag-free satellite. The mission lasted two and a half years, cumulating five-months-worth of science free-fall data, two thirds with a pair of test masses of different compositions -- Titanium and Platinum alloys -- and the last third with a reference pair of test masses of the same composition -- Platinum. We summarize the data analysis, with an emphasis on the characterization of the systematic uncertainties due to thermal instabilities and on the correction of short-lived events which could mimic a WEP violation signal. We found no violation of the WEP, with the E\"otv\"os parameter of the Titanium and Platinum pair constrained to $\eta({\rm Ti, Pt})~=~ [-1.5 \pm 2.3~{\rm (stat)} \pm 1.5~{\rm (syst)}]~\times 10^{-15}$ at $1\sigma$ in statistical errors., Comment: Phys. A variety of nonlinear models of biological systems generate complex chaotic behaviors that contrast with biological homeostasis, the observation that many biological systems prove remarkably robust in the face of changing external or internal conditions. Motivated by the subtle dynamics of cell activity in a crustacean central pattern generator (CPG), this paper proposes a refinement of the notion of chaos that reconciles homeostasis and chaos in systems with multiple timescales. We show that systems displaying relaxation cycles while going through chaotic attractors generate chaotic dynamics that are regular at macroscopic timescales and are thus consistent with physiological function. We further show that this relative regularity may break down through global bifurcations of chaotic attractors such as crises, beyond which the system may also generate erratic activity at slow timescales. We analyze these phenomena in detail in the chaotic Rulkov map, a classical neuron model known to exhibit a variety of chaotic spike patterns. This leads us to propose that the passage of slow relaxation cycles through a chaotic attractor crisis is a robust, general mechanism for the transition between such dynamics. We validate this numerically in three other models: a simple model of the crustacean CPG neural network, a discrete cubic map, and a continuous flow.

Testing the Weak Equivalence Principle (WEP) to a precision of $10^{-15}$ requires a quantity of data that give enough confidence on the final result: ideally, the longer the measurement the better the rejection of thestatistical noise. The science sessions had a duration of 120 orbits maximum and were regularly repeated and spaced out to accommodate operational constraints but also in order to repeat the experiment in different conditions and to allow time to calibrate the instrument. Several science sessions were performed over the 2.5 year duration of the experiment. This paper aims to describe how the data have been produced on the basis of a mission scenario and a data flow process, driven by a tradeoff between the science objectives and the operational constraints. The mission was led by the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES) which provided the satellite, the launch and the ground operations. The ground segment was distributed between CNES and Office National d'Etudes et de Recherches A\'erospatiales (ONERA). CNES provided the raw data through the Centre d'Expertise de Compensation de Tra\^{i}n\'{e}e (CECT: Drag-free expertise centre). The science was led by the Observatoire de la C\^ote d{'}Azur (OCA) and ONERA was in charge of the data process. Since the MICROSCOPE instrument aims to measure accelerations as low as a few 10$^{-15}$\,m\,s$^{-2}$ and cannot operate on ground, it was obvious to have a large time dedicated to its characterization in flight. After its release and first operation, the characterization experiments covered all the aspects of the instrument design in order to consolidate the scientific measurements and the subsequent conclusions drawn from them. Over the course of the mission we validated the servo-control and even updated the PID control laws for each inertial sensor. Thanks to several dedicated experiments and the analysis of the instrument sensitivities, we have been able to identify a number of instrument characteristics such as biases, gold wire and electrostatic stiffnesses, non linearities, couplings and free motion ranges of the test-masses, which may first impact the scientific objective and secondly the analysis of the instrument good operation., Comment: This paper is part of set of articles dedicated to the final results of MICROSCOPE space mission and submitted to CQG

The MICROSCOPE experiment was designed to test the weak equivalence principle in space, by comparing the low-frequency dynamics of cylindrical "free-falling" test masses controlled by electrostatic forces. We use data taken during technical sessions aimed at estimating the electrostatic stiffness of MICROSCOPE's sensors to constrain a short-range Yukawa deviation from Newtonian gravity. We take advantage of the fact that in the limit of small displacements, the gravitational interaction (both Newtonian and Yukawa-like) between nested cylinders is linear, and thus simply characterised by a stiffness. By measuring the total stiffness of the forces acting on a test mass as it moves, and comparing it with the theoretical electrostatic stiffness (expected to dominate), it is a priori possible to infer constraints on the Yukawa potential parameters. However, we find that measurement uncertainties are dominated by the gold wires used to control the electric charge of the test masses, though their related stiffness is indeed smaller than the expected electrostatic stiffness. Moreover, we find a non-zero unaccounted for stiffness that depends on the instrument's electric configuration, hinting at the presence of patch-field effects. Added to significant uncertainties on the electrostatic model, they only allow for poor constraints on the Yukawa potential. This article is dedicated to the use the MICROSCOPE mission's data to test chameleon theory of gravity. We take advantage of the technical sessions aimed to characterize the electrostatic stiffness of MICROSCOPE's instrument intrinsic to its capacitive measurement system. Any discrepancy between the expected and measured stiffness may result from unaccounted-for contributors, i.e. extra-forces. This work considers the case of chameleon gravity as a possible contributor. It was previously shown that in situations similar to these measurement sessions, a chameleon fifth force appears and acts as a stiffness for small displacements. The magnitude of this new component of the stiffness is computed over the chameleon's parameter space. It allows us to derive constraints by excluding any force inconsistent with the MICROSCOPE data. As expected --since MICROSCOPE was not designed for the purpose of such an analysis--, these new bounds are not competitive with state-of-the-art constraints, but they could be improved by a better estimation of all effects at play in these sessions. In networks of nonlinear oscillators, symmetries place hard constraints on the system that can be exploited to predict universal dynamical features and steady-states, providing a rare generic organizing principle for far-from-equilibrium systems. However, the robustness of this class of theories to symmetry-disrupting imperfections is untested. Here, we develop a model experimental reaction-diffusion network of chemical oscillators to test applications of this theory in the context of self-organizing systems relevant to biology and soft robotics. The network is a ring of 4 identical microreactors containing the oscillatory Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction coupled to nearest neighbors via diffusion. Assuming perfect symmetry, theory predicts 4 categories of stable spatiotemporal phase-locked periodic states and 4 categories of invariant manifolds that guide and structure transitions between phase-locked states. In our experiments, we observed the predicted symmetry-derived synchronous clustered transients that occur when the dynamical trajectories coincide with invariant manifolds. However, we observe only 3 of the 4 phase-locked states that are predicted for the idealized homogeneous system. Quantitative agreement between experiment and numerical simulations is found by accounting for the small amount of experimentally determined heterogeneity. This work demonstrates that a surprising degree of the network's dynamics are constrained by symmetry in spite of the breakdown of the assumption of homogeneity and raises the question of why heterogeneity destabilizes some symmetry predicted states, but not others., Comment: *Ian and Mike contributed equally to this work. Dedicated accelerometers have been developed for the MICROSCOPE mission taking into account the specific range of acceleration to be measured on board the satellite. Considering one micro-g and even less as the full range of the instrument, leads to a customized concept and a high performance electronics for the sensing and servo-actuations of the accelerometer test-masses. In addition to a very accurate geometrical sensor core, a high performance electronics architecture provides the measurement of the weak electrostatic forces and torques applied to the test-masses. A set of capacitive sensors delivers the position and the attitude of the test-mass with respect to a very steady gold coated cage made in silica. The voltages applied on the electrodes surrounding each test-mass are finely controlled to generate the adequate electrical field and so the electrostatic pressures on the test-mass. This field maintains the test-mass motionless with respect to the instrument structure. Digital control laws are implemented in order to enable instrument operation flexibility and a weak position sensor noise. MICROSCOPE's space test of the weak equivalence principle (WEP) is based on the minute measurement of the difference of accelerations experienced by two test masses as they orbit the Earth. A detection of a violation of the WEP would appear at a well-known frequency $f_{\rm EP}$ depending on the satellite's orbital and spinning frequencies. Consequently, the experiment was optimised to miminise systematic errors at $f_{\rm EP}$. Glitches are short-lived events visible in the test masses' measured acceleration, most likely originating in cracks of the satellite's coating. In this paper, we characterise their shape and time distribution. Although intrinsically random, their time of arrival distribution is modulated by the orbital and spinning periods. They have an impact on the WEP test that must be quantified. However, the data available prevents us from unequivocally tackling this task. We show that glitches affect the test of the WEP, up to an a priori unknown level. Discarding the perturbed data is thus the best way to reduce their effect., Comment: References updated

After performing highly sensitive acceleration measurements during two years of drag-free flight around the Earth, MICROSCOPE provided the best constraint on the Weak Equivalence Principle (WEP) to date. Beside being a technological challenge, this experiment required a specialised data analysis pipeline to look for a potential small signal buried in the noise, possibly plagued by instrumental defects, missing data and glitches. This paper describes the frequency-domain iterative least-square technique that we developed for MICROSCOPE. In particular, using numerical simulations, we prove that our estimator is unbiased and provides correct error bars. This paper focus on the description of the design and performance of the MICROSCOPE satellite and its Drag-Free and Attitude Control System (DFACS). The satellite is derived from CNES' Myriade platform family, albeit with significant upgrades dictated by the unprecedented MICROSCOPE's mission requirements. The 300kg drag-free microsatellite has completed its 2-year flight with higher-than-expected performances. Its passive thermal concept allowed for variations smaller than 1 $\mu$K at the measurement frequency $f_{\rm{EP}}$. The propulsion system provided a 6 axis continuous and very low noise thrust from zero to some hundreds of micronewtons. Finally, the performance of its DFACS (aimed at compensating the disturbing forces and torques applied to the satellite) is the finest ever achieved in low Earth orbit, with residual accelerations along the three axes are lower than $10^{-12} {\rm m/s}^2$ at $f_{\rm{EP}}$ over 8 days., Comment: References updated

The MICROSCOPE mission aimed to test the Weak Equivalence Principle (WEP) to a precision of $10^{-15}$. The WEP states that two bodies fall at the same rate on a gravitational field independently of their mass or composition. Considering two random variables with different laws to which we only have access through finite size iid samples, we address how to reweight the first sample so that its empirical distribution converges towards the true law of the second sample as the size of both samples goes to infinity. We study an optimal reweighting that minimizes the Wasserstein distance between the empirical measures of the two samples, and leads to an expression of the weights in terms of Nearest Neighbors. The consistency and some asymptotic convergence rates in terms of expected Wasserstein distance are derived, and do not need the assumption of absolute continuity of one random variable with respect to the other. These results have some application in Uncertainty Quantification for decoupled estimation and in the bound of the generalization error for the Nearest Neighbor Regression under covariate shift.

Experimental characterization of neuronal dynamics involves recording both of spontaneous activity patterns and of responses to transient and sustained inputs. While much theoretical attention has been devoted to the spontaneous activity of neurons, less is known about the dynamic mechanisms shaping their responses to transient inputs, although these bear significant physiological relevance. Here, we study responses to transient inputs in a widely used class of neuron models (nonlinear adaptive hybrid models) well-known to reproduce a number of biologically realistic behaviors. We focus on responses to transient inputs that have been previously associated with Type III neurons, arguably the least studied category in Hodgkin's classification, which are those neurons that never exhibit continuous firing in response to sustained excitatory currents. The two phenomena that we study are post-inhibitory facilitation, in which an otherwise subthreshold excitatory input can induce a spike if it is applied with proper timing after an inhibitory pulse, and slope detection, in which a neuron spikes to a transient input only when the input's rate of change is in a specific, bounded range. We analyze the origin of these phenomena in nonlinear hybrid models and provide a geometric characterization of dynamical structures associated with PIF in the system and an analytical study of slope detection for tent inputs. While the necessary and sufficient conditions for these behaviors are easily satisfied in neurons with Type III excitability, our proofs are quite general and valid for neurons that do not exhibit Type III excitability as well. This study therefore provides a framework for the mathematical analysis of these responses to transient inputs associated with Type III neurons in other systems and for advancing our understanding of these systems' computational properties.

Many studies have found evidence that the brain operates at a critical point, a processus known as self-organized criticality. A recent paper found remarkable scalings suggestive of criticality in systems as different as neural cultures, anesthetized or awake brains. We point out here that the diversity of these states would question any claimed role of criticality in information processing. Furthermore, we show that two non-critical systems pass all the tests for criticality, a control that was not provided in the original article. We conclude that such false positives demonstrate that the presence of criticality in the brain is still not proven and that we need better methods that scaling analyses.

We use data from the T-SAGE instrument on board the MICROSCOPE space mission to search for Lorentz violation in matter-gravity couplings as described by the Lorentz violating Standard-Model Extension (SME) coefficients $(\bar{a}_\text{eff})_\mu^w$, where ($\mu = T,X,Y,Z$) and ($w = e,p,n$) for the electron, proton and neutron. One of the phenomenological consequences of a non-zero value of those coefficients is that test bodies of different composition fall differently in an external gravitational field. This is similar to "standard" tests of the universality of free fall, but with a specific signature that depends on the orbital velocity and rotation of the Earth. We analyze data from five measurement sessions of MICROSCOPE spread over a year finding no evidence for such a signature, but setting constraints on linear combinations of the SME coefficients that improve on best previous results by one to two orders of magnitude. Additionally, our independent linear combinations are different from previous ones, which increases the diversity of available constraints, paving the way towards a full decorrelation of the individual coefficients.

Deterministic models of vegetation often summarize, at a macroscopic scale, a multitude of intrinsically random events occurring at a microscopic scale. We bridge the gap between these scales by demonstrating convergence to a mean-field limit for a general class of stochastic models representing each individual ecological event in the limit of large system size. The proof relies on classical stochastic coupling techniques that we generalize to cover spatially extended interactions. The mean-field limit is a spatially extended non-Markovian process characterized by nonlocal integro-differential equations describing the evolution of the probability for a patch of land to be in a given state (the generalized Kolmogorov equations of the process, GKEs). We thus provide an accessible general framework for spatially extending many classical finite-state models from ecology and population dynamics. We demonstrate the practical effectiveness of our approach through a detailed comparison of our limiting spatial model and the finite-size version of a specific savanna-forest model, the so-called Staver-Levin model. There is remarkable dynamic consistency between the GKEs and the finite-size system, in spite of almost sure forest extinction in the finite-size system. To resolve this apparent paradox, we show that the extinction rate drops sharply when nontrivial equilibria emerge in the GKEs, and that the finite-size system's quasi-stationary distribution (stationary distribution conditional on non-extinction) closely matches the bifurcation diagram of the GKEs. Furthermore, the limit process can support periodic oscillations of the probability distribution, thus providing an elementary example of a jump process that does not converge to a stationary distribution. The Weak Equivalence Principle (WEP), stating that two bodies of different compositions and/or mass fall at the same rate in a gravitational field (universality of free fall), is at the very foundation of General Relativity. The MICROSCOPE mission aims to test its validity to a precision of $10^{-15}$, two orders of magnitude better than current on-ground tests, by using two masses of different compositions (titanium and platinum alloys) on a quasi-circular trajectory around the Earth. This is realised by measuring the accelerations inferred from the forces required to maintain the two masses exactly in the same orbit. Any significant difference between the measured accelerations, occurring at a defined frequency, would correspond to the detection of a violation of the WEP, or to the discovery of a tiny new type of force added to gravity. MICROSCOPE's first results show no hint for such a difference, expressed in terms of E\"otv\"os parameter $\delta(Ti,Pt)=[-1\pm{}9{\rm (stat)}\pm{}9{\rm (syst)}] \times{}10^{-15}$ (both 1$\sigma$ uncertainties) for a titanium and platinum pair of materials. This result was obtained on a session with 120 orbital revolutions representing 7\% of the current available data acquired during the whole mission. We study the statistical physics of a surprising phenomenon arising in large networks of excitable elements in response to noise: while at low noise, solutions remain in the vicinity of the resting state and large-noise solutions show asynchronous activity, the network displays orderly, perfectly synchronized periodic responses at intermediate level of noise. We show that this phenomenon is fundamentally stochastic and collective in nature. Indeed, for noise and coupling within specific ranges, an asymmetry in the transition rates between a resting and an excited regime progressively builds up, leading to an increase in the fraction of excited neurons eventually triggering a chain reaction associated with a macroscopic synchronized excursion and a collective return to rest where this process starts afresh, thus yielding the observed periodic synchronized oscillations. We further uncover a novel anti-resonance phenomenon: noise-induced synchronized oscillations disappear when the system is driven by periodic stimulation with frequency within a specific range. In that anti-resonance regime, the system is optimal for measures of information capacity. This observation provides a new hypothesis accounting for the efficiency of Deep Brain Stimulation therapies in Parkinson's disease, a neurodegenerative disease characterized by an increased synchronization of brain motor circuits. We further discuss the universality of these phenomena in the class of stochastic networks of excitable elements with confining coupling, and illustrate this universality by analyzing various classical models of neuronal networks. Altogether, these results uncover some universal mechanisms supporting a regularizing impact of noise in excitable systems, reveal a novel anti-resonance phenomenon in these systems, and propose a new hypothesis for the efficiency of high-frequency stimulation in Parkinson's disease.

We introduce one- and two-dimensional `exponential shapelets': orthonormal basis functions that efficiently model isolated features in data. They are built from eigenfunctions of the quantum mechanical hydrogen atom, and inherit mathematics with elegant properties under Fourier transform, and hence (de)convolution. For a wide variety of data, exponential shapelets compress information better than Gauss-Hermite/Gauss-Laguerre (`shapelet') decomposition, and generalise previous attempts that were limited to 1D or circularly symmetric basis functions. We investigate the dynamics of a limit of interacting FitzHugh-Nagumo neurons in the regime of large interaction coefficients. We consider the dynamics described by a mean-field model given by a nonlinear evolution partial differential equation representing the probability distribution of one given neuron in a large network. The case of weak connectivity previously studied displays a unique, exponentially stable, stationary solution. Here, we consider the case of strong connectivities, and exhibit the presence of possibly non-unique stationary behaviors or non-stationary behaviors. To this end, using Hopf-Cole transformation, we demonstrate that the solutions exponentially concentrate around a singular Dirac measure as the connectivity parameter diverges, centered at the zeros of a time-dependent continuous function. We next characterize the points at which this measure concentrates, and exhibit a particular solution corresponding to a Dirac measure concentrated on a time-dependent point satisfying an ordinary differential equation identical to the original FitzHugh-Nagumo system. This solution may thus feature multiple stable fixed points or periodic orbits, respectively corresponding to a clumping of the whole system at rest, or a synchronization of cells on a periodic solution. We illustrate these results with numerical simulations of neural networks with a relatively modest number of neurons and finite coupling strength, and show that away from the bifurcations of the limit system, the asymptotic equation recovers the main properties of more realistic networks., Comment: Added reference to the recent arxiv preprint [20]

According to the Weak Equivalence Principle, all bodies should fall at the same rate in a gravitational field. The MICROSCOPE satellite, launched in April 2016, aims to test its validity at the $10^{-15}$ precision level, by measuring the force required to maintain two test masses (of titanium and platinum alloys) exactly in the same orbit. A non-vanishing result would correspond to a violation of the Equivalence Principle, or to the discovery of a new long-range force. The existence of a light or massive scalar field with a coupling to matter weaker than gravitational strength is a possible source of violation of the weak equivalence principle. We use the first results on the E\"otv\"os parameter by the MICROSCOPE experiment to set new constraints on such scalar fields. For a massive scalar field of mass smaller than $10^{-12}$ eV (i.e. range larger than a few $10^5$ m) we improve existing constraints by one order of magnitude to $|\alpha|<10^{-11}$ if the scalar field couples to the baryon number and to $|\alpha|<10^{-12}$ if the scalar field couples to the difference between the baryon and the lepton numbers. We also consider a model describing the coupling of a generic dilaton to the standard matter fields with five parameters, for a light field: we find that for masses smaller than $10^{-12}$eV, the constraints on the dilaton coupling parameters are improved by one order of magnitude compared to previous equivalence principle tests., Comment: Matches publlished version. The MICROSCOPE space mission aims at testing the Equivalence Principle (EP) with an accuracy of $10^{-15}$. The test is based on the precise measurement delivered by a differential electrostatic accelerometer on-board a drag-free microsatellite which includes two cylindrical test masses submitted to the same gravitational field and made of different materials. The experiment consists in testing the equality of the electrostatic acceleration applied to the masses to maintain them relatively motionless at a well-known frequency. This high precision experiment is compatible with only very little perturbations. However, aliasing arises from the finite time span of the measurement, and is amplified by measurement losses. These effects perturb the measurement analysis. Numerical simulations have been run to estimate the contribution of a perturbation at any frequency on the EP violation frequency and to test its compatibility with the mission specifications. The MICROSCOPE space mission aims to test the Equivalence Principle with an accuracy of $10^{-15}$. The drag-free micro-satellite will orbit around the Earth and embark a differential electrostatic accelerometer including two cylindrical test masses submitted to the same gravitational field and made of different materials. The experience consists in testing the equality of the electrostatic acceleration applied to the masses to maintain them relatively motionless. The accuracy of the measurements exploited for the test of the Equivalence Principle is limited by our a priori knowledge of several physical parameters of the instrument. These parameters are partially estimated on-ground, but with an insufficient accuracy, and an in-orbit calibration is therefore required to correct the measurements. The calibration procedures have been defined and their analytical performances have been evaluated. In addition, a simulator software including the dynamics model of the instrument, the satellite drag-free system and the perturbing environment has been developed to numerically validate the analytical results. After an overall presentation of the MICROSCOPE mission, this paper will describe the calibration procedures and focus on the simulator. The MICROSCOPE space mission, launched on April 25, 2016, aims to test the weak equivalence principle (WEP) with a 10^-15 precision. To reach this performance requires an accurate and robust data analysis method, especially since the possible WEP violation signal will be dominated by a strongly colored noise. An important complication is brought by the fact that some values will be missing -therefore, the measured time series will not be strictly regularly sampled. Those missing values induce a spectral leakage that significantly increases the noise in Fourier space, where the WEP violation signal is looked for, thereby complicating scientific returns. Recently, we developed an inpainting algorithm to correct the MICROSCOPE data for missing values. This code has been integrated in the official MICROSCOPE data processing pipeline because it enables us to significantly measure an equivalence principle violation (EPV) signal in a model-independent way, in the inertial satellite configuration. In this work, we present several improvements to the method that may allow us now to reach the MICROSCOPE requirements for both inertial and spin satellite configurations. The main improvement has been obtained using a prior on the power spectrum of the colored-noise that can be directly derived from the incomplete data. We show that after reconstructing missing values with this new algorithm, a least-squares fit may allow us to significantly measure an EPV signal with a 0.96x10^-15 precision in the inertial mode and 1.2x10^-15 precision in the spin mode. Although, the inpainting method presented in this paper has been optimized to the MICROSCOPE data, it remains sufficiently general to be used in the general context of missing data in time series dominated by an unknown colored-noise. In a series of two papers, we investigate the mechanisms by which complex oscillations are generated in a class of nonlinear dynamical systems with resets modeling the voltage and adaptation of neurons. This first paper presents mathematical analysis showing that the system can support bursts of any period as a function of model parameters. In continuous dynamical systems with resets, period-incrementing structures are complex to analyze. In the present context, we use the fact that bursting patterns correspond to periodic orbits of the adaptation map that governs the sequence of values of the adaptation variable at the resets. Using a slow-fast approach, we show that this map converges towards a piecewise linear discontinuous map whose orbits are exactly characterized. That map shows a period-incrementing structure with instantaneous transitions. We show that the period-incrementing structure persists for the full system with non-constant adaptation, but the transitions are more complex. We investigate the presence of chaos at the transitions.

We present a Gaussian regression method for time series with missing data and stationary residuals of unknown power spectral density (PSD). The missing data are efficiently estimated by their conditional expectation as in universal Kriging, based on the circulant approximation of the complete data covariance. After initialization with an autoregessive fit of the noise, a few iterations of estimation/reconstruction steps are performed until convergence of the regression and PSD estimates, in a way similar to the expectation-conditional-maximization algorithm. The estimation can be performed for an arbitrary PSD provided that it is sufficiently smooth. The algorithm is developed in the framework of the MICROSCOPE space mission whose goal is to test the weak equivalence principle (WEP) with a precision of $10^{-15}$. We show by numerical simulations that the developed method allows us to meet three major requirements: to maintain the targeted precision of the WEP test in spite of the loss of data, to calculate a reliable estimate of this precision and of the noise level, and finally to provide consistent and faithful reconstructed data to the scientific community., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures

Although the Cassini Spacecraft and the Huygens lander provided numerous information about Titan atmospheric chemistry and the formation of its aerosols, the exact composition of these aerosols still remains unknown. A fruitful proxy to investigate these aerosols is the use of laboratory experiments that allow producing and studying analogs of Titan aerosol, the so35 called tholins. Even when produced in the laboratory, unveiling the exact composition of the aerosol remains problematic due to the high complexity of the material. Numerous advances have been recently made using high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) (Pernot et al. 2010, Somogyi et al. 2012, Gautier et al. 2014) that allowed the separation of isobaric compounds and a robust identification of chemical species composing tholins regarding their molecular formulae. Nevertheless isomeric species cannot be resolved by a simple mass measurement. We propose here an analysis of tholins by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled to HRMS to unveil this isomeric ambiguity for some of the major tholins compounds. By comparing chromatograms obtained when analyzing tholins and chemical standards, we strictly identified seven molecules in our tholins samples: melamine, cyanoguanidine, 6-methyl-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine, 2,4,6-triaminopyrimidine, 3-amino- 1,2,4-triazole, 3,5-Dimethyl-1,2,4-triazole and 2,4-diamino-1,3,5-triazine. Several molecules, including hexamethylenetriamine (HMT) were not present at detectable levels in our sample. The use for the first time of a coupled HPLC-HRMS technique applied to tholins study demonstrated the interest of such a technique compared to single high-resolution mass spectrometry for the study of tholins composition.

In the past 20 years, the study of real eigenvalues of non-symmetric real random matrices has seen important progress. Notwithstanding, central questions still remain open, such as the characterization of their asymptotic statistics and the universality thereof. In this letter we show that for a wide class of matrices, the number $k_n$ of real eigenvalues of a matrix of size $n$ is asymptotically Gaussian with mean $\bar k_n=\mathcal{O}(\sqrt{n})$ and variance $\bar k_n(2-\sqrt{2})$. Moreover, we show that the limit distribution of real eigenvalues undergoes a transition between bimodal for $k_n=o(\sqrt{n})$ to unimodal for $k_n=\mathcal{O}(n)$, with a uniform distribution at the transition. We predict theoretically these behaviours in the Ginibre ensemble using a log-gas approach, and show numerically that they hold for a wide range of random matrices with independent entries beyond the universality class of the circular law., Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures

The down regulation of CD3 protein present on the surface of a T-cell triggers the process of activation. A rapid decrease of CD3 from the surface is required to reach the threshold that is necessary for the continuation of the activation process. By flow cytometry technique, it is well established that an amount of down regulated CD3 proteins recycle and may come on the surface of T-cell. This article is dedicated to study the impact of recycled CD3 protein that is recruited into the immune synapse at different rates. The population density of T-cells is distributed over surface protein (CD3) concentration under the framework of population balance models by using coupled system of PDEs. Such problems need non-conventional population balance modeling so that classical numerical technique can be applied. A recently developed efficient numerical method is validated against the analytical and numerical solutions.

The progression of a cell population where each individual is characterized by the value of an internal variable varying with time (e.g. size, weight, and protein concentration) is typically modeled by a Population Balance Equation, a first order linear hyperbolic partial differential equation. The characteristics described by internal variables usually vary monotonically with the passage of time. A particular difficulty appears when the characteristic curves exhibit different slopes from each other and therefore cross each other at certain times. In particular such crossing phenomenon occurs during T-cells immune response when the concentrations of protein expressions depend upon each other and also when some global protein (e.g. Interleukin signals) is also involved which is shared by all T-cells. At these crossing points, the linear advection equation is not possible by using the classical way of hyperbolic conservation laws. Therefore, a new Transport Method is introduced in this article which allowed us to find the population density function for such processes. The newly developed Transport method (TM) is shown to work in the case of crossing and to provide a smooth solution at the crossing points in contrast to the classical PDF techniques., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures

The Efficient Global Optimization (EGO) algorithm uses a conditional Gaus-sian Process (GP) to approximate an objective function known at a finite number of observation points and sequentially adds new points which maximize the Expected Improvement criterion according to the GP. The important factor that controls the efficiency of EGO is the GP covariance function (or kernel) which should be chosen according to the objective function. Traditionally, a pa-rameterized family of covariance functions is considered whose parameters are learned through statistical procedures such as maximum likelihood or cross-validation. However, it may be questioned whether statistical procedures for learning covariance functions are the most efficient for optimization as they target a global agreement between the GP and the observations which is not the ultimate goal of optimization. Furthermore, statistical learning procedures are computationally expensive. The main alternative to the statistical learning of the GP is self-adaptation, where the algorithm tunes the kernel parameters based on their contribution to objective function improvement. After questioning the possibility of self-adaptation for kriging based optimizers, this paper proposes a novel approach for tuning the length-scale of the GP in EGO: At each iteration, a small ensemble of kriging models structured by their length-scales is created. All of the models contribute to an iterate in an EGO-like fashion. Then, the set of models is densified around the model whose length-scale yielded the best iterate and further points are produced. Numerical experiments are provided which motivate the use of many length-scales. The tested implementation does not perform better than the classical EGO algorithm in a sequential context but show the potential of the approach for parallel implementations.

Gaussian Processes (GPs) are a popular approach to predict the output of a parameterized experiment. They have many applications in the field of Computer Experiments, in particular to perform sensitivity analysis, adaptive design of experiments and global optimization. Nearly all of the applications of GPs require the inversion of a covariance matrix that, in practice, is often ill-conditioned. Regularization methodologies are then employed with consequences on the GPs that need to be better understood.The two principal methods to deal with ill-conditioned covariance matrices are i) pseudoinverse and ii) adding a positive constant to the diagonal (the so-called nugget regularization).The first part of this paper provides an algebraic comparison of PI and nugget regularizations. Redundant points, responsible for covariance matrix singularity, are defined. It is proven that pseudoinverse regularization, contrarily to nugget regularization, averages the output values and makes the variance zero at redundant points. However, pseudoinverse and nugget regularizations become equivalent as the nugget value vanishes. A measure for data-model discrepancy is proposed which serves for choosing a regularization technique.In the second part of the paper, a distribution-wise GP is introduced that interpolates Gaussian distributions instead of data points. Distribution-wise GP can be seen as an improved regularization method for GPs.

This work continues the analysis of large deviations for randomly connected neural networks models of the brain. The originality of the model relies on the fact that the directed impact of one particle onto another depends on the state of both particles, and (ii) have random Gaussian amplitude with mean and variance scaling as the inverse of the network size. Similarly to the spatially extended case, we show that under sufficient regularity assumptions, the empirical measure satisfies a large-deviation principle with good rate function achieving its minimum at a unique probability measure, implying in particular its convergence in both averaged and quenched cases, as well as a propagation of chaos property (in the averaged case only). The class of model we consider notably includes a stochastic version of Kuramoto model with random connections.

Missing data are a common problem in experimental and observational physics. They can be caused by various sources, either an instrument's saturation, or a contamination from an external event, or a data loss. In particular, they can have a disastrous effect when one is seeking to characterize a colored-noise-dominated signal in Fourier space, since they create a spectral leakage that can artificially increase the noise. It is therefore important to either take them into account or to correct for them prior to e.g. a Least-Square fit of the signal to be characterized. In this paper, we present an application of the {\it inpainting} algorithm to mock MICROSCOPE data; {\it inpainting} is based on a sparsity assumption, and has already been used in various astrophysical contexts; MICROSCOPE is a French Space Agency mission, whose launch is expected in 2016, that aims to test the Weak Equivalence Principle down to the $10^{-15}$ level. We then explore the {\it inpainting} dependence on the number of gaps and the total fraction of missing values. We show that, in a worst-case scenario, after reconstructing missing values with {\it inpainting}, a Least-Square fit may allow us to significantly measure a $1.1\times10^{-15}$ Equivalence Principle violation signal, which is sufficiently close to the MICROSCOPE requirements to implement {\it inpainting} in the official MICROSCOPE data processing and analysis pipeline. Together with the previously published KARMA method, {\it inpainting} will then allow us to independently characterize and cross-check an Equivalence Principle violation signal detection down to the $10^{-15}$ level., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review D. 12 pages, 6 figures

In a series of two papers, we investigate the large deviations and asymptotic behavior of stochastic models of brain neural networks with random interaction coefficients. In this first paper, we take into account the spatial structure of the brain and consider (i) the presence of interaction delays that depend on the distance between cells and (ii) Gaussian random interaction amplitude whose mean and variance depend on the neurons positions and scale as the inverse of the network size. We show that the empirical measure satisfies a large-deviation principle with good rate function reaching its minimum at a unique spatially extended probability measure. This result implies averaged convergence of the empirical measure and propagation of chaos. The limit is characterized through complex non-Markovian implicit equation in which the network interaction term is replaced by a non-local Gaussian process whose statistics depend on the solution over the whole neural field.

This work continues the analysis of complex dynamics in a class of bidimensional nonlinear hybrid dynamical systems with resets modeling neuronal voltage dynamics with adaptation and spike emission. We show that these models can generically display a form of mixed-mode oscillations (MMOs), which are trajectories featuring an alternation of small oscillations with spikes or bursts (multiple consecutive spikes). The mechanism by which these are generated relies fundamentally on the hybrid structure of the flow: invariant manifolds of the continuous dynamics govern small oscillations, while discrete resets govern the emission of spikes or bursts, contrasting with classical MMO mechanisms in ordinary differential equations involving more than three dimensions and generally relying on a timescale separation. The decomposition of mechanisms reveals the geometrical origin of MMOs, allowing a relatively simple classification of points on the reset manifold associated to specific numbers of small oscillations. We show that the MMO pattern can be described through the study of orbits of a discrete adaptation map, which is singular as it features discrete discontinuities with unbounded left- and right-derivatives. We study orbits of the map via rotation theory for discontinuous circle maps and elucidate in detail complex behaviors arising in the case where MMOs display at most one small oscillation between each consecutive pair of spikes.

Critical states are sometimes identified experimentally through power-law statistics or universal scaling functions. We show here that such features naturally emerge from networks in self-sustained irregular regimes away from criticality. In these regimes, statistical physics theory of large interacting systems predict a regime where the nodes have independent and identically distributed dynamics. We thus investigated the statistics of a system in which units are replaced by independent stochastic surrogates, and found the same power-law statistics, indicating that these are not sufficient to establish criticality. We rather suggest that these are universal features of large-scale networks when considered macroscopically. The analysis of physical measurements often copes with highly correlated noises and interruptions caused by outliers, saturation events or transmission losses. We assess the impact of missing data on the performance of linear regression analysis involving the fit of modeled or measured time series. We show that data gaps can significantly alter the precision of the regression parameter estimation in the presence of colored noise, due to the frequency leakage of the noise power. We present a regression method which cancels this effect and estimates the parameters of interest with a precision comparable to the complete data case, even if the noise power spectral density (PSD) is not known a priori. The method is based on an autoregressive (AR) fit of the noise, which allows us to build an approximate generalized least squares estimator approaching the minimal variance bound. The method, which can be applied to any similar data processing, is tested on simulated measurements of the MICROSCOPE space mission, whose goal is to test the Weak Equivalence Principle (WEP) with a precision of $10^{-15}$. In this particular context the signal of interest is the WEP violation signal expected to be found around a well defined frequency. We test our method with different gap patterns and noise of known PSD and find that the results agree with the mission requirements, decreasing the uncertainty by a factor 60 with respect to ordinary least squares methods. We investigate existence and uniqueness of solutions of a McKean-Vlasov evolution PDE representing the macroscopic behaviour of interacting Fitzhugh-Nagumo neurons. This equation is hypoelliptic, nonlocal and has unbounded coefficients. We prove existence of a solution to the evolution equation and non trivial stationary solutions. Moreover, we demonstrate uniqueness of the stationary solution in the weakly nonlinear regime. Eventually, using a semigroup factorisation method, we show exponential nonlinear stability in the small connectivity regime.

We consider the ensemble of Real Ginibre matrices with a positive fraction $\alpha>0$ of real eigenvalues. We demonstrate a large deviations principle for the joint eigenvalue density of such matrices and we introduce a two phase log-gas whose stationary distribution coincides with the spectral measure of the ensemble. Using these tools we provide an asymptotic expansion for the probability $p^n_{\alpha n}$ that an $n\times n$ Ginibre matrix has $k=\alpha n$ real eigenvalues and we characterize the spectral measures of these matrices., Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures

MICROSCOPE is a French Space Agency mission that aims to test the Weak Equivalence Principle in space down to an accuracy of $10^{-15}$. This is two orders of magnitude better than the current constraints, which will allow us to test General Relativity as well as theories beyond General Relativity which predict a possible Weak Equivalence Principle violation below $10^{-13}$. In this communication, we describe the MICROSCOPE mission, its measurement principle and instrument, and we give an update on its status. In such different domains as neurosciences, spin glasses, social science, economics and finance, large ensemble of interacting individuals following (mainstream) or opposing (hipsters) to the majority are ubiquitous. In these systems, interactions generally occur after specific delays associated to transport, transmission or integration of information. We investigate here the impact of anti-conformism combined to delays in the emergent dynamics of large populations of mainstreams and hipsters. To this purpose, we introduce a class of simple statistical systems of interacting agents composed of (i) mainstreams and anti-conformists in the presence of (ii) delays, possibly heterogeneous, in the transmission of information. In this simple model, each agent can be in one of two states, and can change state in continuous time with a rate depending on the state of others in the past. We express the thermodynamic limit of these systems as the number of agents diverge, and investigate the solutions of the limit equation, with a particular focus on synchronized oscillations induced by delayed interactions. We show that when hipsters are too slow in detecting the trends, they will consistently make the same choice, and realizing this too late, they will switch, all together to another state where they remain alike. Similar synchronizations arise when the impact of mainstreams on hipsters choices (and reciprocally) dominate the impact of other hipsters choices, and we show that these may emerge only when the randomness in the hipsters decisions is sufficiently large. Beyond the choice of the best suit to wear this winter, this study may have important implications in understanding synchronization of nerve cells, investment strategies in finance, or emergent dynamics in social science, domains in which delays of communication and the geometry of information accessibility are prominent.
