Search

We provide an overview of the status of Monte-Carlo event generators for high-energy particle physics. Guided by the experimental needs and requirements, we highlight areas of active development, and opportunities for future improvements. Particular emphasis is given to physics models and algorithms that are employed across a variety of experiments. These common themes in event generator development lead to a more comprehensive understanding of physics at the highest energies and intensities, and allow models to be tested against a wealth of data that have been accumulated over the past decades. A cohesive approach to event generator development will allow these models to be further improved and systematic uncertainties to be reduced, directly contributing to future experimental success. Event generators are part of a much larger ecosystem of computational tools. They typically involve a number of unknown model parameters that must be tuned to experimental data, while maintaining the integrity of the underlying physics models. Making both these data, and the analyses with which they have been obtained accessible to future users is an essential aspect of open science and data preservation. Trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) and Centaurs are remnants of our planetary system formation, and their physical properties have invaluable information for evolutionary theories. Stellar occultation is a ground-based method for studying these small bodies and has presented exciting results. These observations can provide precise profiles of the involved body, allowing an accurate determination of its size and shape. The goal is to show that even single-chord detections of TNOs allow us to measure their milliarcsecond astrometric positions in the reference frame of the Gaia second data release (DR2). Accurated ephemerides can then be generated, allowing predictions of stellar occultations with much higher reliability. We analyzed data from stellar occultations to obtain astrometric positions of the involved bodies. The events published before the Gaia era were updated so that the Gaia DR2 catalog is the reference. Previously determined sizes were used to calculate the position of the object center and its corresponding error with respect to the detected chord and the International Celestial Reference System (ICRS) propagated Gaia DR2 star position. We derive 37 precise astrometric positions for 19 TNOs and 4 Centaurs. Twenty-one of these events are presented here for the first time. Although about 68\% of our results are based on single-chord detection, most have intrinsic precision at the submilliarcsecond level. Lower limits on the diameter and shape constraints for a few bodies are also presented as valuable byproducts. Using the Gaia DR2 catalog, we show that even a single detection of a stellar occultation allows improving the object ephemeris significantly, which in turn enables predicting a future stellar occultation with high accuracy. Observational campaigns can be efficiently organized with this help, and may provide a full physical characterization of the involved object., Comment: 16 pages, 28 figures. In this presentation, we will focus on a recent applications of the GoSam 2.0 automated framework which goes beyond the official scope of this code, originally designed for one-loop fixed order calculations. In particular, we describe a customized version of GoSam that has been recently employed to study the production of a top-antitop pair in association with a vector boson or with the Higgs boson to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. In the context of these calculations, the modified version of GoSam was used to evaluate the NLO hard functions which are needed to carry out the resummation of soft gluon emission effects. We study the resummation of soft gluon emission corrections to the production of a top-antitop pair in association with a Z boson at the Large Hadron Collider to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We build a simple diagnostic criterion for approximate factor structure in large cross-sectional equity datasets. Given a model for asset returns with observable factors, the criterion checks whether the error terms are weakly cross-sectionally correlated or share at least one unobservable common factor. It only requires computing the largest eigenvalue of the empirical cross-sectional covariance matrix of the residuals of a large unbalanced panel. A general version of this criterion allows us to determine the number of omitted common factors. The panel data model accommodates both time-invariant and time-varying factor structures. The theory applies to random coefficient panel models with interactive fixed effects under large cross-section and time-series dimensions. The empirical analysis runs on monthly and quarterly returns for about ten thousand US stocks from January 1968 to December 2011 for several time-invariant and time-varying specifications. For monthly returns, we can choose either among time-invariant specifications with at least four financial factors, or a scaled three-factor specification. For quarterly returns, we cannot select macroeconomic models without the market factor.

In this presentation, we review the general features of integrand-reduction techniques, with a particular focus on their generalization beyond one loop. We start with a brief discussion of the one-loop scenario, a case in which integrand-reduction algorithms are well established and played over the past decade an important role in the development of automated tools for the theoretical evaluation of physical observables. The generalization of integrand-reduction techniques to all loops has been the subject of several efforts in the recent past, thus providing a better understanding of the universal properties of scattering amplitudes. We consider soft gluon emission corrections to the production of a top-antitop pair in association with a W boson at the Large Hadron Collider. We obtain a soft-gluon resummation formula for this production process which is valid up to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We evaluate the soft gluon resummation formula in Mellin space by means of an in-house parton level Monte Carlo code which allows us to obtain predictions for the total cross section as well as for several differential distributions. After a brief general introduction about the integrand-reduction method, we will review the main features of the GoSam 2.0 automated framework for one-loop calculations and illustrate its application to SM processes involving the production of massive particles in conjunction with jets and photons. These results have been obtained by interfacing GoSam with different Monte Carlo frameworks, thus combining the NLO calculation with parton shower effects. In the second part of the presentation, we will focus on the applications of GoSam beyond NLO. The code has already been used within NNLO calculations for the computation of real-virtual contributions and for the evaluation of the hard functions needed by approximate NNLO and resummation techniques. We present an interface between the multipurpose NLO Monte Carlo tool MadGraph5_aMC@NLO and the automated one-loop amplitude generator GoSam. As a first application of this novel framework, we compute the NLO corrections to $pp \to t\bar{t}H$ and $pp \to t\bar{t}\gamma\gamma$ matched to a parton shower. In this presentation we review the current status in the automated evaluation of scattering amplitudes, with particular attention to the developments related with NLO calculations, which led to the construction of powerful multi-purpose computational tools. After a general overview, we will devote a short section to describe the GoSam framework for NLO calculations and its application to the production of Higgs boson plus jets. We will then briefly comment on the challenges presented by NNLO calculations, whose structure is considerably more complicated. Weak radiative decays of the B mesons belong to the most important flavor changing processes that provide constraints on physics at the TeV scale. In the derivation of such constraints, accurate standard model predictions for the inclusive branching ratios play a crucial role. In the current Letter we present an update of these predictions, incorporating all our results for the O(alpha_s^2) and lower-order perturbative corrections that have been calculated after 2006. New estimates of nonperturbative effects are taken into account, too. For the CP- and isospin-averaged branching ratios, we find B_{s gamma} = (3.36 +_ 0.23) * 10^-4 and B_{d gamma} = 1.73^{+0.12}_{-0.22} * 10^-5, for E_gamma > 1.6GeV. Both results remain in agreement with the current experimental averages. Normalizing their sum to the inclusive semileptonic branching ratio, we obtain R_gamma = ( B_{s gamma} + B_{d gamma})/B_{c l nu} = (3.31 +_ 0.22) * 10^-3. A new bound from B_{s gamma} on the charged Higgs boson mass in the two-Higgs-doublet-model II reads M_{H^+} > 480 GeV at 95%C.L., Comment: journal version, 5 pages, no figures

We present the version 2.0 of the program GoSam, which is a public program package to compute one-loop corrections to multi-particle processes. The extended version of the "Binoth-Les-Houches-Accord" interface to Monte Carlo programs is also implemented. This allows a large flexibility regarding the combination of the code with various Monte Carlo programs to produce fully differential NLO results, including the possibility of parton showering and hadronisation. We present the version 2.0 of the program package GoSam for the automated calculation of one-loop amplitudes. GoSam is devised to compute one-loop QCD and/or electroweak corrections to multi-particle processes within and beyond the Standard Model. We present the application of a novel reduction technique for one-loop scattering amplitudes based on the combination of the integrand reduction and Laurent expansion. We describe the general features of its implementation in the computer code NINJA, and its interface to GoSam. We present recent developments on the topic of the integrand reduction of scattering amplitudes. Integrand-level methods allow to express an amplitude as a linear combination of Master Integrals, by performing operations on the corresponding integrands. This approach has already been successfully applied and automated at one loop, and recently extended to higher loops. We describe a coherent framework based on simple concepts of algebraic geometry, such as multivariate polynomial division, which can be used in order to obtain the integrand decomposition of any amplitude at any loop order. In the one-loop case, we discuss an improved reduction algorithm, based on the application of the Laurent series expansion to the integrands, which has been implemented in the semi-numerical library Ninja. At two loops, we present the reduction of five-point amplitudes in N=4 SYM, with a unitarity-based construction of the integrand. We present the calculation of the cross section for Higgs boson production in association with a top quark pair plus one jet, at next-to-leading-order (NLO) accuracy in QCD. All mass dependence is retained without recurring to any approximation. After including the complete NLO QCD corrections, we observe a strong reduction in the scale dependence of the result. We also show distributions for the invariant mass of the top quark pair, with and without the additional jet, and for the transverse momentum and the pseudorapidity of the Higgs boson. Results for the virtual contributions are obtained with a novel reduction approach based on integrand decomposition via Laurent expansion, as implemented in the library Ninja. We present the integrand reduction via multivariate polynomial division as a natural technique to encode the unitarity conditions of Feynman amplitudes. We derive a recursive formula for the integrand reduction, valid for arbitrary dimensionally regulated loop integrals with any number of loops and external legs, which can be used to obtain the decomposition of any integrand analytically with a finite number of algebraic operations. The general results are illustrated by applications to two-loop Feynman diagrams in QED and QCD, showing that the proposed reduction algorithm can also be seamlessly applied to integrands with denominators appearing with arbitrary powers., Comment: Published version. 5 pages, 2 figures

We report on the calculation of the cross section for Higgs boson production in association with three jets via gluon fusion, at next-to-leading-order (NLO) accuracy in QCD, in the infinite top-mass approximation. After including the complete NLO QCD corrections, we observe a strong reduction in the scale dependence of the result, and an increased steepness in the transverse momentum distributions of both the Higgs and the leading jets. The results are obtained with the combined use of GoSam, Sherpa, and the MadDipole/MadEvent framework., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

This Report summarizes the results of the activities in 2012 and the first half of 2013 of the LHC Higgs Cross Section Working Group. The main goal of the working group was to present the state of the art of Higgs Physics at the LHC, integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. This report follows the first working group report Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Inclusive Observables (CERN-2011-002) and the second working group report Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 2. Differential Distributions (CERN-2012-002). We present the calculation of the NLO QCD corrections to the associated production of a Higgs boson and two jets, in the infinite top-mass limit. We discuss the technical details of the computation and we show the numerical impact of the radiative corrections on several observables at the LHC. The results are obtained by using a fully automated framework for fixed order NLO QCD calculations based on the interplay of the packages GoSam and Sherpa. The evaluation of the virtual corrections constitutes an application of the d-dimensional integrand-level reduction to theories with higher dimensional operators. The integrand-level methods for the reduction of scattering amplitudes are well-established techniques, which have already proven their effectiveness in several applications at one-loop. In addition to the automation and refinement of tools for one-loop calculations, during the past year we observed very interesting progress in developing new techniques for amplitudes at two- and higher-loops, based on similar principles. In this presentation, we review the main features of integrand-level approaches with a particular focus on algebraic techniques, such as Laurent series expansion which we used to improve the one-loop reduction, and multivariate polynomial division which unveils the structure of multi-loop amplitudes., Comment: 7 pages, v2: fixed typos, added references. We describe the application of a novel approach for the reduction of scattering amplitudes, based on multivariate polynomial division, which we have recently presented. This technique yields the complete integrand decomposition for arbitrary amplitudes, regardless of the number of loops. It allows for the determination of the residue at any multiparticle cut, whose knowledge is a mandatory prerequisite for applying the integrand-reduction procedure. By using the division modulo Groebner basis, we can derive a simple integrand recurrence relation that generates the multiparticle pole decomposition for integrands of arbitrary multiloop amplitudes. We apply the new reduction algorithm to the two-loop planar and nonplanar diagrams contributing to the five-point scattering amplitudes in N=4 super Yang-Mills and N=8 supergravity in four dimensions, whose numerator functions contain up to rank-two terms in the integration momenta. We determine all polynomial residues parametrizing the cuts of the corresponding topologies and subtopologies. We obtain the integral basis for the decomposition of each diagram from the polynomial form of the residues. We show that the evaluation of scattering amplitudes can be formulated as a problem of multivariate polynomial division, with the components of the integration-momenta as indeterminates. We present a recurrence relation which, independently of the number of loops, leads to the multi-particle pole decomposition of the integrands of the scattering amplitudes. The recursive algorithm is based on the Weak Nullstellensatz Theorem and on the division modulo the Groebner basis associated to all possible multi-particle cuts. We apply it to dimensionally regulated one-loop amplitudes, recovering the well-known integrand-decomposition formula. Finally, we focus on the maximum-cut, defined as a system of on-shell conditions constraining the components of all the integration-momenta. The 2011 Les Houches workshop was the first to confront LHC data. In the two years since the previous workshop there have been significant advances in both soft and hard QCD, particularly in the areas of multi-leg NLO calculations, the inclusion of those NLO calculations into parton shower Monte Carlos, and the tuning of the non-perturbative parameters of those Monte Carlos. We present the full NLO QCD corrections to the production of a W^+W^- pair in association with two jets in hadronic collisions, which is an important background to New Physics and Higgs boson searches. We include leptonic decays of the W-bosons with full spin correlations. We find NLO corrections of the order of 10% for standard cuts at the LHC. In this presentation, we describe the GoSam (Golem/Samurai) framework for the automated computation of multi-particle scattering amplitudes at the one-loop level. We propose a first implementation of the integrand-reduction method for two-loop scattering amplitudes. We show that the residues of the amplitudes on multi-particle cuts are polynomials in the irreducible scalar products involving the loop momenta, and that the reduction of the amplitudes in terms of master integrals can be realized through polynomial fitting of the integrand, without any apriori knowledge of the integral basis. We discuss how the polynomial shapes of the residues determine the basis of master integrals appearing in the final result. We present a four-dimensional constructive algorithm that we apply to planar and non-planar contributions to the 4- and 5-point MHV amplitudes in N=4 SYM. The technique hereby discussed extends the well-established analogous method holding for one-loop amplitudes, and can be considered a preliminary study towards the systematic reduction at the integrand-level of two-loop amplitudes in any gauge theory, suitable for their automated semianalytic evaluation., Comment: 26 pages, 11 figures

We study, via Monte Carlo simulation, the dynamic critical behavior of the Chayes-Machta dynamics for the Fortuin-Kasteleyn random-cluster model, which generalizes the Swendsen-Wang dynamics for the q-state Potts ferromagnet to non-integer q \ge 1. We consider spatial dimension d=2 and 1.25 \le q \le 4 in steps of 0.25, on lattices up to 1024^2, and obtain estimates for the dynamic critical exponent z_{CM}. We present evidence that when 1 \le q \lesssim 1.95 the Ossola-Sokal conjecture z_{CM} \ge \beta/\nu is violated, though we also present plausible fits compatible with this conjecture. We show that the Li-Sokal bound z_{CM} \ge \alpha/\nu is close to being sharp over the entire range 1 \le q \le 4, but is probably non-sharp by a power. As a byproduct of our work, we also obtain evidence concerning the corrections to scaling in static observables., Comment: LaTeX2e, 75 pages including 26 Postscript figures

In this talk we present techniques for calculating one-loop amplitudes for multi-leg processes using Feynman diagrammatic methods in a semi-algebraic context. Our approach combines the advantages of the different methods allowing for a fast evaluation of the amplitude while monitoring the numerical stability of the calculation. In phase space regions close to singular kinematics we use a method avoiding spurious Gram determinants in the calculation. We present a new approach to the reduction of one-loop amplitudes obtained by reconstructing the tensorial expression of the scattering amplitudes. The reconstruction is performed at the integrand level by means of a sampling in the integration momentum. There are several interesting applications of this novel method within existing techniques for the reduction of one-loop multi-leg amplitudes: to deal with numerically unstable points, such as in the vicinity of a vanishing Gram determinant; to allow for a sampling of the numerator function based on real values of the integration momentum; to optimize the numerical reduction in the case of long expressions for the numerator functions., Comment: 20 pages, 2 figures

SAMURAI is a tool for the automated numerical evaluation of one-loop corrections to any scattering amplitudes within the dimensional-regularization scheme. It is based on the decomposition of the integrand according to the OPP-approach, extended to accommodate an implementation of the generalized d-dimensional unitarity-cuts technique, and uses a polynomial interpolation exploiting the Discrete Fourier Transform. SAMURAI can process integrands written either as numerator of Feynman diagrams or as product of tree-level amplitudes. We discuss some applications, among which the 6- and 8-photon scattering in QED, and the 6-quark scattering in QCD. SAMURAI has been implemented as a Fortran90 library, publicly available, and it could be a useful module for the systematic evaluation of the virtual corrections oriented towards automating next-to-leading order calculations relevant for the LHC phenomenology., Comment: 35 pages, 7 figures

We calculate the set of O(alpha_s^2) corrections to the branching ratio and to the photon energy spectrum of the decay process B -> X_s gamma originating from the interference of diagrams involving the electromagnetic dipole operator O_7 with diagrams involving the chromomagnetic dipole operator O_8. The corrections evaluated here are one of the elements needed to complete the calculations of the B -> X_s gamma branching ratio at next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD. We conclude that this set of corrections does not change the central value of the Standard Model prediction for Br(B -> X_s gamma) by more than 1 %., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures

In this paper we present a numerical implementation of the one-loop QED corrections to the hard-bremsstrahlung process e- e+ \to e- e+ gamma. These corrections can be included in the Monte Carlo event generators employed for simulating Bhabha scattering events at low-energy high-luminosity electron-positron colliders. The calculation is performed by employing the reduction method developed by Ossola, Papadopoulos and Pittau. Our results are implemented in a modular code for the numerical evaluation of the scattering amplitudes for any given phase-space point. In a similar way, we also evaluate the one-loop QED corrections to e- e+ \to mu- mu+ gamma, which represents an interesting application of the method in the presence of two different mass scales in the loops., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, v2 minor changes: comments and references added, matches PLB version

We present a calculation of the NLO QCD corrections for the production of three vector bosons at the LHC, namely Z Z Z, W+ W- Z, W+ Z Z, and W+ W- W+ production. The virtual corrections are computed using the recently proposed method of reduction at the integrand level (OPP reduction). Concerning the contributions coming from real emission we used the dipole subtraction to treat the soft and collinear divergences. We find that the QCD corrections for these electroweak processes are in the range between 70 and 100 percent. As such they have to be considered in experimental studies of triple vector boson production at the LHC.

We present an optimization of the reduction algorithm of one-loop amplitudes in terms of master integrals. It is based on the exploitation of the polynomial structure of the integrand when evaluated at values of the loop-momentum fulfilling multiple cut-conditions, as emerged in the OPP-method. The reconstruction of the polynomials, needed for the complete reduction, is rended very versatile by using a projection-technique based on the Discrete Fourier Transform. The novel implementation is applied in the context of the NLO QCD corrections to u d-bar --> W+ W- W+.

The various sources of Rational Terms contributing to the one-loop amplitudes are critically discussed. We show that the terms originating from the generic (n-4)-dimensional structure of the numerator of the one-loop amplitude can be derived by using appropriate Feynman rules within a tree-like computation. We present a program that implements the OPP reduction method to extract the coefficients of the one-loop scalar integrals from a user defined (sub)-amplitude or Feynman Diagram, as well as the rational terms coming from the 4-dimensional part of the numerator. The rational pieces coming from the epsilon-dimensional part of the numerator are treated as an external input, and can be computed with the help of dedicated tree-level like Feynman rules. We study the triple differential distribution of B-> Xu l nu, consistently including all perturbative and non-perturbative effects through O(alphas^2 beta_0) and O(1/mb^3). The Fermi motion is parameterized in terms of a single light-cone function for each structure function and for any value of q^2, accounting for all subleading effects. We discuss the problems and uncertainties related to the high-q^2 tail and to Weak Annihilation effects. We work in the kinetic scheme, a framework characterized by a Wilsonian treatment with a hard cutoff mu ~ 1GeV. We study the dynamic critical behavior of the Chayes-Machta dynamics for the Fortuin-Kasteleyn random-cluster model, which generalizes the Swendsen-Wang dynamics for the q-state Potts model to noninteger q, in two and three spatial dimensions, by Monte Carlo simulation. We show that the Li-Sokal bound z \ge \alpha/\nu is close to but probably not sharp in d=2, and is far from sharp in d=3, for all q.
