We investigate the emergence of sustained spatio-temporal behaviors in reaction-phase separation systems. We focus on binary systems, in which either one or both species can phase separate, and we discuss the stability of the homogeneous state determining the conditions for the emergence of a Hopf-type bifurcation. We then examine the effects of a specific autocatalytic chemical reaction, and computationally determine the full solutions to the partial differential equations. We find that when both species phase separate, sustained pulsed dynamics arise in one dimension. When considered in two dimensions, the system generates persistent, complex dynamic droplets, which do not generally appear if only one of the species can phase separate. We finally discuss the emergence of dynamics with complex features, which can be understood using the framework of a cellular automata.

The growth and reconfiguration of polymer networks such as the cytoskeleton can generate forces that move objects and deform materials and membranes, even in the absence of molecular motors. Taking inspiration from this, we ask whether a dynamic polymer system can generate deformation forces by merely controlling the monomer structure and interactions, and the temporal schedule of monomer release, which can be considered a "molecular program" directing polymer assembly. Using simulations of patchy particles that are released into the interior of a vesicle at a given rate, we ask which molecular programs are most proficient at generating forces. We show that stiff polymers induce deformation by spontaneously bundling, and deforming the vesicle axially. The rate at which monomers are released controls whether the polymers can generate forces quickly, or deform the vesicle more slowly but with a larger maximal force. For softer polymers, which cannot ordinarily deform the vesicle, we demonstrate that introducing crosslinkers can be enough to promote the bundling of polymers required to deform vesicles, but that the details of how this crosslinking is implemented can significantly affect the outcome. Finally, we show that dynamic release of monomers and crosslinkers can increase the variance of this process, and that by making the polymers polar filaments one can obtain better force generation by suppressing nucleation. The interaction of phase-separating systems with chemical reactions is of great interest in various contexts, from biology to material science. In biology, phase separation is thought to be the driving force behind the formation of biomolecular condensates, i.e. organelles without a membrane that are associated with cellular metabolism, stress response, and development. RNA, proteins, and small molecules participating in the formation of condensates are also involved in a variety of biochemical reactions: how do the chemical reaction dynamics influence the process of phase separation? Here we are interested in finding chemical reactions that can arrest the growth of condensates, generating stable spatial patterns of finite size (microphase separation), in contrast with the otherwise spontaneous (unstable) growth of condensates. We consider a classical continuum model for phase separation coupled to a chemical reaction network (CRN), and we seek conditions for the emergence of stable oscillations of the solution in space. Given reaction dynamics with uncertain rate constants, but known structure, we derive easily computable conditions to assess whether microphase separation is impossible, possible for some parameter values, or robustly guaranteed for all parameter values within given bounds. Our results establish a framework to evaluate which classes of CRNs favor the emergence of condensates with finite size, a question that is broadly relevant to understanding and engineering life., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

The standard relationships of statistical mechanics are upended my the presence of active forces. In particular, it is no longer usually possible to simply write down what the stationary probability of a state of such a system will be, as can be done in ordinary statistical mechanics. While exact expressions are possible for harmonic systems, anharmonic systems tend to be much more difficult to treat. In this manuscript, we investigate how the microscopic probability for anharmonic systems is modified in the presence of non-conservative forces. We recount how non-conservative corrections to microscopic probabilities in generic systems can be represented as integrals over Green's function kernels, and that these Green's functions take the form of path integrals. We show how using analytically tractable form of these functions allows us to calculate corrections to the microscopic probability for a generic anharmonic system. These results are compared to active Brownian particles inside a harmonic or anharmonic well. From this it can be shown that accumulation of probability away from its equilibrium minima is a natural effect arising in anharmonic but not harmonic systems. Finally, we extend the microscopic results to study small active polymers with anharmonic backbone potentials. The interplay of the active driving with the anharmonic backbone potential can be used to understand how the end-to-end distance and mode space distributions of anharmonic active polymers scales with active driving. Chemical reactions that couple to systems that phase separate have been implicated in diverse contexts from biology to materials science. However, how a particular set of chemical reactions (chemical reaction network, CRN) would affect the behaviors of a phase separating system is difficult to fully predict theoretically. In this paper, we analyze a mean field theory coupling CRNs to phase separating materials and expound on how the properties of the CRNs affect different classes of non-equilibrium behaviors: the emergence of microphase separation or of temporally oscillating patterns. We examine the problem of achieving microphase separated condensates by first considering tractable problems and illustrating the mathematical conditions leading to microphase separation. We then identify CRN motifs that are likely to yield size control by examining randomly generated networks and parameters. By analyzing the probabilities to observe particular states, we define simple design rules of CRNs that lead to desired non-equilibrium behavior. We show that chemical interactions generating negative feedback facilitate microphase separation, moreover, we demonstrate that the parameters important for the emergence of microphase separation differ for systems with two or four components, due to frustration. Our results provide guidance toward the design of self-regulating material CRNs and provide instructions to manage the formation, dissolution, and organization of compartments., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

The mechanism for the formation of the $\Lambda(1405)$ resonance is studied in a chiral quark model that includes quark-meson as well as contact (four point) interactions. The negative-parity $S$-wave scattering amplitudes for strangeness $-1$ and $1$ are calculated within a unified coupled-channel framework that includes the $KN$, $\bar{K}N$, $\pi\Sigma$, $\eta\Lambda$, $K\Xi$, $\pi\Lambda$, and $\eta\Sigma$ channels and possible genuine three-quark bare singlet and octet states corresponding to $\frac12^-$ resonances. We show that in order to reproduce the scattering amplitudes in the $S_{01}$ partial wave it is important to include the pertinent three-quark octet states as well as the singlet state, while the inclusion of the contact term is not mandatory. The Laurent-Pietarinen expansion is used to determine the $S$-matrix poles. Following their evolution as a function of increasing interaction strength, the mass of the singlet state is strongly reduced due to the attractive self-energy in the $\pi\Sigma$ and $\bar{K}N$ channels; when it drops below the $KN$ threshold, the state acquires a dominant $\bar{K}N$ component which can be identified with a molecular state. The attraction between the kaon and the nucleon is generated through the $\bar{K}N\Lambda^*$ interaction rather than by meson-nucleon forces., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures. Control of self-propelled particles is central to the development of many microrobotic technologies, from dynamically reconfigurable materials to advanced lab-on-a-chip systems. However, there are few physical principles by which particle trajectories can be specified and can be used to generate a wide range of behaviors. Within the field of ray optics, a single principle for controlling the trajectory of light -- Snell's law -- yields an intuitive framework for engineering a broad range of devices, from microscopes to cameras and telescopes. Here we show that the motion of self-propelled particles gliding across a resistance discontinuity is governed by a variant of Snell's law, and develop a corresponding ray optics for gliders. Just as the ratio of refractive indexes sets the path of a light ray, the ratio of resistance coefficients is shown to determine the trajectories of gliders. The magnitude of refraction depends on the glider's shape, in particular its aspect ratio, which serves as an analog to the wavelength of light. This enables the demixing of a polymorphic, many-shaped, beam of gliders into distinct monomorphic, single-shaped, beams through a friction prism. In turn, beams of monomorphic gliders can be focused by spherical and gradient friction lenses. Alternatively, the critical angle for total internal reflection can be used to create shape-selective glider traps. Overall our work suggests that furthering the analogy between light and microscopic gliders will result in a wide range of new devices for sorting, concentrating, and analyzing self-propelled particles.

Experimental data for pion photoproduction including differential cross sections and various polarization observables from four reaction channels, $\gamma p \to \pi^0 p$, $\gamma p \to \pi^+n$, $\gamma n \to \pi^- p$ and $\gamma n \to \pi^0 n$ from threshold up to $W=2.2$ GeV have been used in order to perform a single-energy partial wave analysis with minimal model dependence by imposing constraints from unitarity and fixed-$t$ analyticity in an iterative procedure. Reaction models were only used as starting point in the very first iteration. We demonstrate that with this procedure partial wave amplitudes can be obtained which show only a minimal dependence on the initial model assumptions. The analysis has been obtained in full isospin, and the Watson theorem is enforced for energies below $W=1.3$ GeV but is even fulfilled up to $W\approx 1.6$ GeV in many partial waves. We propose to create a secondary beam of neutral kaons in Hall D at Jefferson Lab to be used with the GlueX experimental setup for strange hadron spectroscopy. The superior CEBAF electron beam will enable a flux on the order of $1\times 10^4~K_L/sec$, which exceeds the flux of that previously attained at SLAC by three orders of magnitude. The use of a deuteron target will provide first measurements ever with neutral kaons on neutrons. The experiment will measure both differential cross sections and self-analyzed polarizations of the produced $\Lambda$, $\Sigma$, $\Xi$, and $\Omega$ hyperons using the GlueX detector at the Jefferson Lab Hall D. The measurements will span CM $\cos\theta$ from $-0.95$ to 0.95 in the range W = 1490 MeV to 2500 MeV. The new data will significantly constrain the partial wave analyses and reduce model-dependent uncertainties in the extraction of the properties and pole positions of the strange hyperon resonances, and establish the orbitally excited multiplets in the spectra of the $\Xi$ and $\Omega$ hyperons. Comparison with the corresponding multiplets in the spectra of the charm and bottom hyperons will provide insight into he accuracy of QCD-based calculations over a large range of masses. The proposed facility will have a defining impact in the strange meson sector through measurements of the final state $K\pi$ system up to 2 GeV invariant mass. This will allow the determination of pole positions and widths of all relevant $K^\ast(K\pi)$ $S$-,$P$-,$D$-,$F$-, and $G$-wave resonances, settle the question of the existence or nonexistence of scalar meson $\kappa/K_0^\ast(700)$ and improve the constrains on their pole parameters. Certain types of active systems can be treated as an equilibrium system with excess non-conservative forces driving some of the microscopic degrees of freedom. We derive results for how many particles interacting with each other with both conservative and non-conservative forces will behave. Treating non-conservative forces perturbatevily, we show how the probability distribution of the microscopic degrees of freedom is modified from the Boltzmann distribution. We compare the perturbative expansion to an exactly solvable non-conservative system. We then derive approximate forms of this distribution through analyzing the nature of our perturbations. Finally, we consider how the approximate forms for the microscopic distributions we have derived lead to different macroscopic states when coarse grained, and compare it qualitatively to simulation of non-conservatively interacting particles. We investigate the formation of resonances in the P33 partial wave with the emphasis on possible emergence of dynamically generated quasi-bound states as a consequence of a strong $p$-wave pion attractive interaction in this partial wave, as well as their possible interaction with the genuine quark excited states. By using the Laurent-Pietarinen expansion we follow the evolution of the $S$-matrix poles in the complex energy plane as a function of the interaction strength. Already without introducing a genuine quark resonant state, two physically interesting resonances emerge with pole masses around 1200 MeV and 1400 MeV, with the dominant $\pi N$ and $\pi\Delta$ component, respectively. The added genuine resonant state in the $(1s)^3$ quark configuration mixes with the lower dynamically generated resonance forming the physical $\Delta(1232)$ resonance, and pushes the second dynamical resonance to around 1500 MeV, which allows it to be identified with the $\Delta(1600)$ resonance. Adding a second resonant state with one quark promoted to the $2s$ orbit generates another pole whose evolution remains well separated from the lower two poles. We calculate the helicity amplitudes at the pole and suggest that their $Q^2$ dependence could be a decisive test to discriminate between different models of the $\Delta(1600)$ resonance., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, to be published in Phys. The $\gamma n \to \pi^0 n$ differential cross section evaluated for 27 energy bins span the photon-energy range 290-813 MeV (W = 1.195-1.553 GeV) and the pion c.m. polar production angles, ranging from 18 deg to 162 deg, making use of model-dependent nuclear corrections to extract pi0 production data on the neutron from measurements on the deuteron target. Additionally, the total photoabsorption cross section was measured. The tagged photon beam produced by the 883-MeV electron beam of the Mainz Microtron MAMI was used for the 0-meson production. Our accumulation of 3.6 x 10^6 $\gamma n \to \pi^0 n$ events allowed a detailed study of the reaction dynamics. Our data are in reasonable agreement with previous A2 measurements and extend them to lower energies. The data are compared to predictions of previous SAID, MAID, and BnGa partial-wave analyses and to the latest SAID fit MA19 that included our data. We introduce a model of chemically active particles of a multi-component fluid that can change their interactions with other particles depending on their state. Since such switching of interactions can only be maintained by the input of chemical energy, the system is inherently non-equilibrium. Focusing on a scenario where the equilibrium interactions would lead to condensation into a liquid droplet, and despite the relative simplicity of the interaction rules, these systems display a wealth of interesting and novel behaviors such as oscillations of droplet size and molecular sorting, and raise the possibility of spatio-temporal control of chemical reactions on the nanoscale

The isobar model EtaMAID has been updated with new and high precision data for eta and etaprime photoproduction on protons and neutrons from MAMI, ELSA, GRAAL and CLAS. The background is described in a recently developed Regge-cut model, and for the resonance part the whole list of nucleon resonances has been investigated with 21 N* states contributing to eta photoproduction and 12 N* states contributing to etaprime photoproduction. A new approach is discussed to avoid double counting in the overlap region of Regge and resonances. A comparison is done among four newly updated partial waves analyses for observables and partial waves. Finally, the possibility of a narrow resonance near W=1900 MeV is discussed, that would be able to explain unexpected energy and angular dependence of observables in p(gamma,etaprime)p near etaprime threshold., Comment: 31 pages, 29 figures, replaced with revised version

It has recently been proven that the invariance of observables with respect to angle dependent phase rotations of reaction amplitudes mixes multipoles changing also their relative strength [1]. All contemporary partial wave analyses (PWA) in $\eta$ photoproduction on protons, either energy dependent (ED) [2-5] or single energy (SE) [6] do not take this effect into consideration. It is commonly accepted that there exist quite some similarity in the $E0+$ multipole for all PWA, but notable differences in this, but also in remaining partial waves still remain. In this paper we demonstrate that once this phase rotations are properly taken into account, all contemporary ED and SE partial wave analysis become almost identical for the dominant $E0+$ multipole, and the agreement among all other multipoles becomes much better. We also show that the the measured observables are almost equally well reproduced for all PWA, and the remaining differences among multipoles can be attributed solely to the difference of predictions for unmeasured observables. So, new measurements are needed.

Unconstrained partial-wave amplitudes obtained at discrete energies from fits to complete sets of eight independent observables which are required to uniquely reconstruct reaction amplitudes do not vary smoothly with energy, and are in principle non-unique. We demonstrate how this behavior can be ascribed to the continuum ambiguity. Starting from the spinless scattering case, we demonstrate how an unknown overall phase depending on energy and angle mixes the structures seen in the associated partial-wave amplitudes making the partial wave decomposition non-unique, and illustrate it on a simple toy model. We then apply these principles to pseudo-scalar meson photoproduction and show that the non-uniqueness effect can be removed through a phase rotation generating "up-to-a-phase" unique set of SE partial wave amplitudes. Extracting pole positions from partial wave amplitudes is the next step. Up to now, there was no reliable way to extract pole parameters from SE partial waves, but a new and simple single-channel method (Laurent + Pietarinen expansion) applicable for continuous and discrete data has been recently developed. It is based on applying the Laurent decomposition of partial wave amplitude, and expanding the nonresonant background into a power series of a conformal-mapping, quickly converging power series obtaining the simplest analytic function with well-defined partial wave analytic properties which fits the input. The generalization of this method to multi- channel case is also developed and presented. Data on the reaction $\gamma p\to K^+\Lambda$ from the CLAS experiments are used to derive the leading multipoles, $E_{0+}$, $M_{1-}$, $E_{1+}$, and $M_{1+}$, from the production threshold to 2180\,MeV in 24 slices of the invariant mass. The four multipoles are determined without any constraints. The multipoles are fitted using a multichannel $L+P$ model which allows us to search for singularities and to extract the positions of poles on the complex energy plane in an almost model-independent method. The multipoles are also used as additional constraints in an energy-dependent analysis of a large body of pion and photo-induced reactions within the Bonn-Gatchina (BnGa) partial wave analysis. The study confirms the existence of poles due to nucleon resonances with spin-parity $J^P = 1/2^-; 1/2^+$, and $3/2^+$ in the region at about 1.9\,GeV., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

In view of the recent results of lattice QCD simulation in the P11 partial wave that has found no clear signal for the three-quark Roper state we investigate a different mechanism for the formation of the Roper resonance in a coupled channel approach including the $\pi N$, $\pi\Delta$ and $\sigma N$ channels. We fix the pion-baryon vertices in the underlying quark model while the $s$-wave sigma-baryon interaction is introduced phenomenologically with the coupling strength, the mass and the width of the $\sigma$ meson as free parameters. The Laurent-Pietarinen expansion is used to extract the information about the $S$-matrix pole. The Lippmann-Schwinger equation for the $K$ matrix with a separable kernel is solved to all orders. For sufficiently strong $\sigma NN$ coupling the kernel becomes singular and a quasi-bound state emerges at around 1.4~GeV, dominated by the $\sigma N$ component and reflecting itself in a pole of the $S$-matrix. The alternative mechanism involving a $(1s)^22s$ quark resonant state is added to the model and the interplay of the dynamically generated state and the three-quark resonant state is studied. It turns out that for the mass of the three-quark resonant state above 1.6~GeV the mass of the resonance is determined solely by the dynamically generated state, nonetheless, the inclusion of the three-quark resonant state is imperative to reproduce the experimental width and the modulus of the resonance pole., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures; two figures added with some minor modifications of the text. Partial wave amplitudes of meson photoproduction reactions are an important source of information in baryon spectroscopy. We investigate a new approach in single-energy partial wave analyses of these reactions. Instead of using a constraint to theoretical models in order to achieve solutions which are continuous in energy, we enforce the analyticity of the amplitudes at fixed values of the Mandelstam variable $t$. We present an iterative procedure with successive fixed-$t$ amplitude analyses which constrain the single-energy partial wave analyses and apply this method to the $\gamma p \to \eta p$ reaction. We use pseudo data, generated by the EtaMAID model, to test the method and to analyze ambiguities. Finally, we present an analytically constrained partial wave analysis using experimental data for four polarization observables recently measured at MAMI and GRAAL in the energy range from threshold to $\sqrt{s}=1.85$ GeV., Comment: 46 pages, 24 figures

A significant part of the proteome is composed of intrinsically-disordered proteins (IDPs). These proteins do not fold into a well-defined structure and behave like ordinary polymers. In this work we consider IDPs which have the tendency to aggregate, model them as heteropolymers that contain a small number of associating monomers and use computer simulations in order to compare the aggregation of such IDPs that are grafted to a surface or free in solution. We then discuss how such grafting may affect the analysis of in-vitro experiments and could also be used to suppress harmful aggregation.

Current models of animal evolution focus on selection of individuals, ignoring the much faster selection of symbiotic bacteria. Here we take host-symbiont interactions into account by introducing a Population Genetics-like model of holobionts exposed to toxic stress. The stress can be alleviated by selection of resistant individuals (host and bacteria) and by secretion of a detoxification agent ("detox"). By defining a new measure, termed the Lamarckian, we show that selection of resistant bacteria over one generation of hosts leads to stress-dependent increase in the tolerance of the host's offspring. This benefit is mediated by co-alleviation of toxic and physiologic stress. Prolonged exposure leads to further adaptation by 'group selection' of bacterial communities with higher detox per bacterium. These findings show that Lamarckian adaptation can arise via interactions between two levels of Darwinian selection within a holobiont system. The conclusions and modelling framework are applicable to diverse types of holobiont systems.

All resonances, from hydrogen nuclei excited by the high-energy gamma rays in deep space to newly discovered particles produced in Large Hadron Collider, should be described by the same fundamental physical quantities. However, two distinct sets of properties are used to describe resonances: the pole parameters (complex pole position and residue) and the Breit-Wigner parameters (mass, width, and branching fractions). There is an ongoing decades-old debate on which of them should be abandoned. In this study of nucleon resonances emerging in the elastic pion-nucleon scattering we discover an intricate interplay of the parameters from both sets, and realize that neither set is completely independent or fundamental on its own., Comment: 7 pages, 1 table, 5 figures

We consider how active forces modeled as non-thermal random noise affect the average dynamical properties of a Rouse polymer. As the power spectrum of the noise is not known we keep the analytical treatment as generic as possible and then present results for a few examples of active noise. We discuss the connection between our results and recent experimental studies of dynamics of labeled DNA telomeres in living cells, and propose new chromatin tracking experiments that will allow one to determine the statistical properties of the active forces associated with chromatin remodeling processes.

Electromagnetic resonance properties are uniquely defined at the pole and do not depend on the separation of the resonance from background or the decay channel. Photon-nucleon branching ratios are nowadays often quoted at the pole, and we generalize the considerations to the case of virtual photons. We derive and compare relations for nucleon to baryon transition form factors both for the Breit-Wigner and the pole positions. Using the MAID2007 and SAID SM08 partial wave analyses of pion electroproduction data, we compare the $G_M$, $G_E$, and $G_C$ form factors for the $\Delta(1232)$ resonance excitation at the Breit-Wigner resonance and pole positions up to $Q^2=5$ GeV$^2$. We also explore the $E/M$ and $S/M$ ratios as functions of $Q^2$. For pole and residue extraction, we apply the Laurent + Pietarinen method., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

We introduce a simple model to describe the interplay between specific and non-specific interactions. We study the influence of various physical factors on the static and dynamic properties of the specific interactions of our model and show that contrary to intuitive expectations, non-specific interactions can assist in the formation of specific complexes and increase their stability. A method to extract resonance pole information from single-channel partial-wave amplitudes based on a Laurent (Mittag-Leffler) expansion and conformal mapping techniques has recently been developed. This method has been applied to a number of reactions and provides a model-independent extraction procedure which is particularly useful in cases where a set of amplitudes is available only at descrete energies. This method has been generalized and applied to the case of a multi-channel fit, where several sets of amplitudes are analysed simultaneously. The importance of unitarity constraints is discussed. The final result provides a powerful, model-independent tool for analyzing partial-wave amplitudes of coupled or connected channels based entirely on the concepts of analyticity and unitarity.

Protein distributions measured under a broad set of conditions in bacteria and yeast were shown to exhibit a common skewed shape, with variances depending quadratically on means. For bacteria these properties were reproduced by temporal measurements of protein content, showing accumulation and division across generations. Here we present a stochastic growth-and-division model with feedback which captures these observed properties. The limiting copy number distribution is calculated exactly, and a single parameter is found to determine the distribution shape and the variance-to-mean relation. Estimating this parameter from bacterial temporal data reproduces the measured distribution shape with high accuracy, and leads to predictions for future experiments., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

The statistical theory of polymers tethered around the inner surface of a cylindrical channel has traditionally employed the assumption that the equilibrium density of the polymers is independent of the azimuthal coordinate. However, simulations have shown that this rotational symmetry can be broken when there are attractive interactions between the polymers. We investigate the phases that emerge in these circumstances, and we quantify the effect of the symmetry assumption on the phase behavior of the system. In the absence of this assumption, one can observe large differences in the equilibrium densities between the rotationally symmetric case and the non-rotationally symmetric case. A simple analytical model is developed that illustrates the driving thermodynamic forces responsible for this symmetry breaking. Our results have implications for the current understanding of the polymer behavior in cylindrical nanopores.

We use molecular dynamics simulations in 2d to study multi-component fluid in the limiting case where {\it all the particles are different} (APD). The particles are assumed to interact via Lennard-Jones (LJ) potentials, with identical size parameters but their pair interaction parameters are generated at random from a uniform or from a peaked distribution. We analyze both the global and the local properties of these systems at temperatures above the freezing transition and find that APD fluids relax into a non-random state characterized by clustering of particles according to the values of their pair interaction parameters (particle-identity ordering)., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

The pole structure of the current GW/SAID partial-wave analysis of elastic $\pi N$ scattering and $\eta N$ production data is studied. Pole positions and residues are extracted from both the energy-dependent and single-energy fits, using two different methods. For the energy-dependent fits, both contour integration and a Laurent+Pietarinen approach are used. In the case of single-energy fits, the Laurent+Pietarinen approach is used. We have applied a new approach to determine the pole positions and residues from pion photoproduction multipoles. The method is based on a Laurent expansion of the partial wave T-matrices, with a Pietarinen series representing the regular part of energy-dependent and single-energy photoproduction solutions. The method has been applied to multipole fits generated by the MAID and GWU/SAID groups. We show that the number and properties of poles extracted from photoproduction data correspond very well to results from $\pi$N elastic data and values cited by Particle Data Group (PDG). The photoproduction residues provide new information for the electromagnetic current at the pole position, which are independent of background parameterizations, as opposed to the Breit-Wigner representation. Poles of partial wave scattering matrices have also in hadron spectroscopy recently been established as a sole link between experiment and QCD theories and models [1-4]. We have, however, noticed the fact that Karlsruhe-Helsinki (KH) partial wave analyses, one of the two partial wave analyses which have been "above the line" in PDG [1] for over three decades, does calculate and PDG compiles the abundance of Breit-Wigner (BW) parameters obtained by local BW fit, but has produced only a limited number of pole information obtained by using speed plot (SP) method [5]. We stress the fact that in KH method only Mandelstam analyticity is used as a theoretical constraint, so KH partial wave solutions are as model independent as possible. Therefore, they represent a very confident and valuable input, so it is of extreme importance to extract as many resonance pole parameters from them as possible. In addition, the troubling fact is that BW parameters given in PDG have been obtained from KH80 solution, while pole parameters have been obtained from KA84 version of KH solution. To remedy this, we have used newly developed Laurent+Pietarinen expansion method [6,7] for obtaining pole positions for all partial waves for KH80 and KA84 solutions, compared them, and shown that the differences in pole parameters are, with very few discussed exceptions, negligible for all partial waves. We finally give a full set of pole parameters for both solutions for all partial waves; results which are until now unpublished., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures, 7 tables

We present a new approach to quantifying pole parameters of single-channel processes based on a Laurent expansion of partial-wave T-matrices in the vicinity of the real axis. Instead of using the conventional power-series description of the non-singular part of the Laurent expansion, we represent this part by a convergent series of Pietarinen functions. As the analytic structure of the non-singular part is usually very well known (physical cuts with branch points at inelastic thresholds, and unphysical cuts in the negative energy plane), we find that one Pietarinen series per cut represents the analytic structure fairly reliably. The number of terms in each Pietarinen series is determined by the quality of the fit. The method is tested in two ways: on a toy model constructed from two known poles, various background terms, and two physical cuts, and on several sets of realistic piN elastic energy-dependent partial-wave amplitudes (GWU/SAID - [1, 2], and Dubna-Mainz-Taipei - [3, 4]). We present a new approach to quantifying pole parameters of single-channel processes based on Laurent expansion of partial wave T-matrices. Instead of guessing the analytical form of non-singular part of Laurent expansion as it is usually done, we represent it by the convergent series of Pietarinen functions. As the analytic structure of non-singular term is usually very well known (physical cuts with branhcpoints at inelastic thresholds, and unphysical cuts in the negative energy plane), we show that we need one Pietarinen series per cut, and the number of terms in each Pietarinen series is automatically determined by the quality of the fit. The method is tested on a toy model constructed from two known poles, various background terms, and two physical cuts, and shown to be robust and confident up to three Pietarinen series. We also apply this method to Zagreb CMB amplitudes for the N(1535) 1/2- resonance, and confirm the full success of the method on realistic data. Polymer-coated pores play a crucial role in nucleo-cytoplasmic transport and in a number of biomimetic and nanotechnological applications. Here we present Monte Carlo and Density Functional Theory approaches to identify different collective phases of end-grafted polymers in a nanopore and to study their relative stability as a function of intermolecular interactions. Over a range of system parameters that is relevant for nuclear pore complexes, we observe two distinct phases: one with the bulk of the polymers condensed at the wall of the pore, and the other with the polymers condensed along its central axis. The relative stability of these two phases depends on the interpolymer interactions. The existence of the two phases suggests a transport mechanism in which marginal changes in these interactions, possibly induced by nuclear transport receptors, cause the pore to transform between open and closed configurations.

In ref. [1] we have used the Zagreb realization of Carnegie-Melon-Berkeley coupled-channel, unitary model as a tool for extracting pole positions from the world collection of partial wave data, with the aim of eliminating model dependence in pole-search procedures. In order that the method is sensible, we in this paper discuss the stability of the method with respect to the strong variation of different model ingredients. We show that the Zagreb CMB procedure is very stable with strong variation of the model assumptions, and that it can reliably predict the pole positions of the fitted partial wave amplitudes., Comment: 25 pages, 12 figures, 19 tables

Each and every energy dependent partial-wave analysis is parameterizing the pole positions in a procedure defined by the way how the continuous energy dependence is implemented. These pole positions are, henceforth, inherently model dependent. To reduce this model dependence, we use only one, coupled-channel, unitary, fully analytic method based on the isobar approximation to extract the pole positions from the each available member of the worldwide collection of partial wave amplitudes which are understood as nothing more but a good energy dependent representation of genuine experimental numbers assembled in a form of partial-wave data. In that way, the model dependence related to the different assumptions on the analytic form of the partial-wave amplitudes is avoided, and the true confidence limit for the existence of a particular resonant state, at least in one model, is established.
