Search

Searches for the permanent electric dipole moment of the neutron (nEDM) provide strong constraints on theories beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. The TUCAN collaboration is constructing a source for ultracold neutrons (UCN) and an apparatus to search for the nEDM at TRIUMF, Vancouver, Canada. In this work, we estimate that the spallation-driven UCN source based on a superfluid helium converter will provide $(1.38\pm0.02) \times 10^7$ polarized UCN at a density of $217\pm3$~UCN/cm$^3$ to a room-temperature EDM experiment per fill. With $(1.51\pm0.02) \times 10^6$ neutrons detected after the Ramsey cycle, the statistical sensitivity for an nEDM search per storage cycle will be $(1.94\pm0.06) \times 10^{-25}\,e$cm (1$\sigma$). The TRIUMF Ultra-Cold Advanced Neutron (TUCAN) collaboration aims at a precision neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) measurement with an uncertainty of $10^{-27}\,e\cdot\mathrm{cm}$, which is an order-of-magnitude better than the current nEDM upper limit and enables us to test Supersymmetry. To achieve this precision, we are developing a new high-intensity ultracold neutron (UCN) source using super-thermal UCN production in superfluid helium (He-II) and a nEDM spectrometer. Various superconducting detector solenoids for particle physics have been developed in the world. The key technology is the aluminum-stabilized superconducting conductor for almost all the detector magnets in particle physics experiments. With the progress of the conductor, the coil fabrication technology has progressed as well, such as the inner coil winding technique, indirect cooling, transparent vacuum vessel, quench protection scheme using pure aluminum strips and so on. The detector solenoids design study is in progress for future big projects in Japan and Europe, that is, ILC, FCC and CLIC, based on the technologies established over many years. The combination of good mechanical properties and keeping a high RRR is a key point for the development of Al-stabilized conductor. The present concern for the detector solenoid development is to have been gradually losing the key technologies and experiences, because large-scale detector magnets with Al-stabilized conductor has not been fabricated after the success of CMS and ATLAS-CS in LHC. Complementary efforts are needed to resume an equivalent level of expertise, to extend the effort on research and to develop these technologies and apply them to future detector magnet projects. Especially, further effort is necessary for the industrial technology of Al-stabilized superconductor production. The worldwide collaboration with relevant institutes and industries will be critically important to re-realize and validate the required performances. Some detector solenoids for mid-scale experiment wound with conventional copper-stabilized Nb-Ti conductor require precise control of magnetic field distribution. We constrain anisotropic cosmic birefringence using four-point correlations of even-parity $E$-mode and odd-parity $B$-mode polarization in the cosmic microwave background measurements made by the POLARization of the Background Radiation (POLARBEAR) experiment in its first season of observations. We find that the anisotropic cosmic birefringence signal from any parity-violating processes is consistent with zero. The Faraday rotation from anisotropic cosmic birefringence can be compared with the equivalent quantity generated by primordial magnetic fields if they existed. The POLARBEAR nondetection translates into a 95% confidence level (C.L.) upper limit of 93 nanogauss (nG) on the amplitude of an equivalent primordial magnetic field inclusive of systematic uncertainties. This four-point correlation constraint on Faraday rotation is about 15 times tighter than the upper limit of 1380 nG inferred from constraining the contribution of Faraday rotation to two-point correlations of $B$-modes measured by Planck in 2015. Metric perturbations sourced by primordial magnetic fields would also contribute to the $B$-mode power spectrum. Using the POLARBEAR measurements of the $B$-mode power spectrum (two-point correlation), we set a 95% C.L. upper limit of 3.9 nG on primordial magnetic fields assuming a flat prior on the field amplitude. This limit is comparable to what was found in the Planck 2015 two-point correlation analysis with both temperature and polarization. We perform a set of systematic error tests and find no evidence for contamination. We propose a high thermal conductivity infrared (IR) filter using alumina for use in millimeter wave detection systems. We constructed a prototype two-layer anti-reflection (AR) coated alumina filter with a diameter of 100mm and a thickness of 2mm, and characterized its thermal and optical properties. The transmittance of this filter at 95GHz and 150GHz is 97% and 95% while the estimated 3dB cutoff frequency is at 450GHz. The high thermal conductivity of alumina minimizes thermal gradients. We measure a differential temperature of only 0.21K between the center and the edge of the filter when it is mounted on a thermal anchor of 77K. We also constructed a thermal model based on the prototype filter and analyzed the scalability of the filter diameter. We conclude that temperature increase at the center of alumina IR filter is less than 6K even with a large diameter of 500mm, when the temperature at the edge of the filter is 50K. This is suitable for an application to a large-throughput next-generation cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization experiment, such as POLARBEAR-2 (PB-2).
