We consider a variational model of electrified liquid drops, involving competition between surface tension and charge repulsion. Since the natural model happens to be ill-posed, we show that by adding to the perimeter a Willmore-type energy, the problem turns back to be well-posed. We also prove that for small charge the droplets is spherical.

In this note we show existence and regularity of periodic tilings of the Euclidean space into equal cells containing a ball of fixed radius, which minimize either the classical or the fractional perimeter. We study periodic tessellations of the Euclidean space with unequal cells arising from the minimization of perimeter functionals. Existence results and qualitative properties of minimizers are discussed for different classes of problems, involving local and non-local perimeters. Regularity is then addressed in the general case under volume penalization, and in the planar case with the standard perimeter, prescribing the volumes of each cell. We show by a formal asymptotic expansion that level sets of solutions of a time-fractional Allen-Cahn equation evolve by a geometric flow whose normal velocity is a positive power of the mean curvature. This connection is quite intriguing, since the original equation is nonlocal and the evolution of its solutions depends on all previous states, but the associated geometric flow is of purely local type, with no memory effect involved.

Locally isoperimetric $N$-partitions are partitions of the space $\mathbb R^d$ into $N$ regions with prescribed, finite or infinite measure, which have minimal perimeter (which is the $(d-1)$-dimensional measure of the interfaces between the regions) among all variations with compact support preserving the total measure of each region. In the case when only one region has infinite measure, the problem reduces to the well known problem of isoperimetric clusters: in this case the minimal perimeter is finite, and variations are not required to have compact support. In a recent paper by Alama, Bronsard and Vriend, the definition of isoperimetric partition was introduced, and an example, namely the \emph{lens} partition, was shown to be locally isoperimetric in the plane. In the present paper we are able to give more examples of isoperimetric partitions: in any dimension $d\ge 2$ we have the \emph{lens}, the \emph{peanut} and the \emph{Releaux} triangle. For $d\ge 3$ we also have a \emph{thetrahedral} partition. To obtain these results we prove a \emph{closure} theorem which enables us to state that the $L^1_{loc}$-limit of a sequence of isoperimetric clusters is an isoperimetric partition, if the limit partition is composed by \emph{flat} interfaces outside a large ball. In this way we can make use of the known results about standard clusters. In the planar case $d=2$ we have a complete understanding of locally isoperimetric partitions: they exist if and only if the number of regions with infinite area is at most three. Moreover if the total number of regions is at most four then, up to isometries, there is a unique locally isoperimetric partition which is the lens, the peanut or the Releaux partition already mentioned., Comment: 25 pages, 4 figures

In this article we study the anisotropic curve shortening flow for a planar network of three curves with fixed endpoints and which meet in a triple junction. We show that the anisotropic curvature energy fulfills a Lojasiewicz-Simon gradient inequality and use this knowledge to derive stability results for the flow. Precisely, in our main theorem we show that for any initial data, which are $C^{2,\alpha}$-close to a (local) energy minimizer, the flow exists globally and converges to a possibly different energy minimum.

We study the formation of singularities for the curvature flow of networks when the initial data is symmetric with respect to a pair of perpendicular axes and has two triple junctions. We show that, in this case, the set of singular times is finite., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures

We prove the existence of periodic tessellations of $\mathbb{R}^N$ minimizing a general nonlocal perimeter functional, defined as the interaction between a set and its complement through a nonnegative kernel, which we assume to be either integrable at the origin, or singular, with a fractional type singularity. We reformulate the optimal partition problem as an isoperimetric problem among fundamental domains associated with discrete subgroups of $\mathbb{R}^N$ , and we provide the existence of a solution by using suitable concentrated compactness type arguments and compactness results for lattices. This paper addresses the ill-posedness of the classical Rayleigh variational model of conducting charged liquid drops by incorporating the discreteness of the elementary charges. Introducing the model that describes two immiscible fluids with the same dielectric constant, with a drop of one fluid containing a fixed number of elementary charges together with their solvation spheres, we interpret the equilibrium shape of the drop as a global minimizer of the sum of its surface energy and the electrostatic repulsive energy between the charges under fixed drop volume. For all model parameters, we establish existence of generalized minimizers that consist of at most a finite number of components ``at infinity''. We also give several existence and non-existence results for classical minimizers consisting of only a single component. In particular, we identify an asymptotically sharp threshold for the number of charges to yield existence of minimizers in a regime corresponding to macroscopically large drops containing a large number of charges. The obtained non-trivial threshold is significantly below the corresponding threshold for the Rayleigh model, consistently with the ill-posedness of the latter and demonstrating a particular regularizing effect of the charge discreteness. However, when a minimizer does exist in this regime, it approaches a ball with the charge uniformly distributed on the surface as the number of charges goes to infinity, just as in the Rayleigh model. We are interested in the gradient flow of a general first order convex functional with respect to the $L^1$-topology. By means of an implicit minimization scheme, we show existence of a global limit solution, which satisfies an energy-dissipation estimate, and solves a non-linear and non-local gradient flow equation, under the assumption of strong convexity of the energy. Under a monotonicity assumption we can also prove uniqueness of the limit solution, even though this remains an open question in full generality. We also consider a geometric evolution corresponding to the $L^1$-gradient flow of the anisotropic perimeter. When the initial set is convex, we show that the limit solution is monotone for the inclusion, convex and unique until it reaches the Cheeger set of the initial datum. We show existence of fundamental domains which minimize a general perimeter functional in a homogeneous metric measure space. In some cases, which include the usual perimeter in the universal cover of a closed Riemannian manifold, and the fractional perimeter in $\mathbb R^n$, we can prove regularity of the minimal domains. As a byproduct of our analysis we obtain that a countable partition which is minimal for the fractional perimeter is locally finite and regular, extending a result previously known for the local perimeter. Finally, in the planar case we provide a detailed description of the fundamental domains which are minimal for a general anisotropic perimeter., Comment: 22 pages, 1 figure

An infinite cluster $\mathbf E$ in $\mathbb R^d$ is a sequence of disjoint measurable sets $E_k\subset \mathbb R^d$, $k\in \mathbb N$, called regions of the cluster. Given the volumes $a_k\ge 0$ of the regions $E_k$, a natural question is the existence of a cluster $\mathbf E$ which has finite and minimal perimeter $P(\mathbf E)$ among all clusters with regions having such volumes. We prove that such a cluster exists in the planar case $d=2$, for any choice of the areas $a_k$ with $\sum \sqrt a_k < \infty$. We also show the existence of a bounded minimizer with the property $P(\mathbf E)=\mathcal H^1(\partial \mathbf E)$, where $\partial mathbf E$ denotes the measure theoretic boundary of the cluster. We also provide several examples of infinite isoperimetric clusters for anisotropic and fractional perimeters.

Reaction-diffusion models with nonlocal constraints naturally arise as limiting cases of coupled bulk-surface models of intracellular signalling. In this paper, a minimal, mass-conserving model of cell-polarization on a curved membrane is analyzed in the limit of slow surface diffusion. Using the tools of formal asymptotics and calculus of variations, we study the characteristic wave-pinning behavior of this system on three dynamical timescales. On the short timescale, generation of an interface separating high- and low-concentration domains is established under suitable conditions. Intermediate timescale dynamics is shown to lead to a uniform growth or shrinking of these domains to sizes which are fixed by global parameters. Finally, the long time dynamics reduces to area-preserving geodesic curvature flow that may lead to multi-interface steady state solutions. These results provide a foundation for studying cell polarization and related phenomena in biologically relevant geometries.

The motion by curvature of networks is the generalization to finite union of curves of the curve shortening flow. This evolution has several peculiar features, mainly due to the presence of junctions where the curves meet. In this paper we show that whenever the length of one single curve vanishes and two triple junctions coalesce, then the curvature of the evolving networks remains bounded. This topological singularity is exclusive of the network flow and it can be referred as a Type-0 singularity, in contrast to the well known Type-I and Type-II ones of the usual mean curvature flow of smooth curves or hypersurfaces, characterized by the different rates of blow up of the curvature. As a consequence, we are able to give a complete description of the evolution of tree-like networks till the first singular time, under the assumption that all the tangents flows have unit multiplicity. We consider the volume constrained fractional mean curvature flow of a nearly spherical set, and prove long time existence and asymptotic convergence to a ball. The result applies in particular to convex initial data, under the assumption of global existence. Similarly, we show exponential convergence to a constant for the fractional mean curvature flow of a periodic graph.

We consider a variational problem involving competition between surface tension and charge repulsion. We show that, as opposed to the case of weak (short-range) interactions where we proved ill-posedness of the problem in a previous paper, when the repulsion is stronger the perimeter dominates the capacitary term at small scales. In particular we prove existence of minimizers for small charges as well as their regularity. Combining this with the stability of the ball under small $C^{1,\gamma}$ perturbations, this ultimately leads to the minimality of the ball for small charges. We consider the minimization problem of the functional given by the sum of the fractional perimeter and a general Riesz potential, which is one generalization of Gamow's liquid drop model. We first show the existence of minimizers for any volumes if the kernel of the Riesz potential decays faster than that of the fractional perimeter. Secondly, we show the existence of generalized minimizers for any volumes if the kernel of the Riesz potential just vanishes at infinity. Finally, we study the asymptotic behavior of minimizers when the volume goes to infinity and we prove that a sequence of minimizers converges to the Euclidean ball up to translations if the kernel of the Riesz potential decays sufficiently fast., Comment: 37 pages

We show the existence of generalized clusters of a finite or even infinite number of sets, with minimal total perimeter and given total masses, in metric measure spaces homogeneous with respect to a group acting by measure preserving homeomorphisms, for a quite wide range of perimeter functionals. Such generalized clusters are a natural "relaxed'' version of a cluster and can be thought of as ``albums'' with possibly infinite pages, having a minimal cluster drawn on each page, the total perimeter and the vector of masses being calculated by summation over all pages, the total perimeter being minimal among all generalized clusters with the same masses. The examples include any anisotropic perimeter in a Euclidean space, as well as a hyperbolic plane with the Riemannian perimeter and Heisenberg groups with a canonical left invariant perimeter or its equivalent versions.

In this paper we discuss existence, uniqueness and some properties of a class of solitons to the anisotropic mean curvature flow, i.e., graphical translators, either in the plane or under an assumption of cylindrical symmetry on the anisotropy and the mobility. In these cases, the equation becomes an ordinary differential equation, and this allows to find explicitly the translators and describe their main features., Comment: 15 pages

We study the regularity of solutions to a nonlocal variational problem, which is related to the image denoising model, and we show that, in two dimensions, minimizers have the same H\"older regularity as the original image. We consider the anisotropic mean curvature flow of entire Lipschitz graphs. We prove existence and uniqueness of expanding self-similar solutions which are asymptotic to a prescribed cone, and we characterize the long time behavior of solutions, after suitable rescaling, when the initial datum is a sublinear perturbation of a cone. In the case of regular anisotropies, we prove the stability of self-similar solutions asymptotic to strictly mean convex cones, with respect to perturbations vanishing at infinity. We also show the stability of hyperplanes, with a proof which is novel also for the isotropic mean curvature flow.

The aim of this note is to prove that almost-minimizers of the perimeter are Reifenberg flat, for a very weak notion of minimality. The main observation is that smallness of the excess at some scale implies smallness of the excess at all smaller scales.

We consider the fractional mean curvature flow of entire Lipschitz graphs. We provide regularity results, and we study the long time asymptotics of the flow. In particular we show that in a suitable rescaled framework, if the initial graph is a sublinear perturbation of a cone, the evolution asymptotically approaches an expanding self-similar solution. We also prove stability of hyperplanes and of convex cones in the unrescaled setting.

We consider motion by anisotropic curvature of a network of three curves immersed in the plane meeting at a triple junction and with the other ends fixed. We show existence, uniqueness and regularity of a maximal geometric solution and we prove that, if the maximal time is finite, then either the length of one of the curves goes to zero or the $L^2$ norm of the anisotropic curvature blows up., Comment: 39 pages, 1 figure

We consider the evolution of sets by nonlocal mean curvature and we discuss the preservation along the flow of two geometric properties, which are the mean convexity and the outward minimality. The main tools in our analysis are the level set formulation and the minimizing movement scheme for the nonlocal flow. When the initial set is outward minimizing, we also show the convergence of the (time integrated) nonlocal perimeters of the discrete evolutions to the nonlocal perimeter of the limit flow.

We prove existence of weak solutions to the obstacle problem for semilinear wave equations (including the fractional case) by using a suitable approximating scheme in the spirit of minimizing movements. This extends the results in [9], where the linear case was treated. We consider a version of Gamow's liquid drop model with a short range attractive perimeter-penalizing potential and a long-range Coulomb interaction of a uniformly charged mass in $\R^3$. Here we constrain ourselves to minimizing among the class of shapes that are columnar, i.e., constant in one spatial direction. Using the standard perimeter in the energy would lead to non-existence for any prescribed cross-sectional area due to the infinite mass in the constant spatial direction. In order to heal this defect we use a connected perimeter instead. We prove existence of minimizers for this connected isoperimetric problem with long-range interaction and study the shapes of minimizers in the small and large cross section regimes. For an intermediate regime we use an Ohta-Kawasaki phase field model with connectedness constraint to study the shapes of minimizers numerically., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures

We study a geometric variational problem arising from modeling two-dimensional charged drops of a perfectly conducting liquid in the presence of an external potential. We characterize the semicontinuous envelope of the energy in terms of a parameter measuring the relative strength of the Coulomb interaction. As a consequence, when the potential is confining and the Coulomb repulsion strength is below a critical value, we show existence and partial regularity of volume-constrained minimizers. We consider a variational scheme for the anisotropic (including crystalline) mean curvature flow of sets with strictly positive anisotropic mean curvature. We show that such condition is preserved by the scheme, and we prove the strict convergence in BV of the time-integrated perimeters of the approximating evolutions, extending a recent result of De Philippis and Laux to the anisotropic setting. We also prove uniqueness of the flat flow obtained in the limit.

We introduce a notion of uniform convergence for local and nonlocal curvatures. Then, we propose an abstract method to prove the convergence of the corresponding geometric flows, within the level set formulation. We apply such a general theory to characterize the limits of $s$-fractional mean curvature flows as $s\to 0^+$ and $s\to 1^-$. In analogy with the $s$-fractional mean curvature flows, we introduce the notion of $s$-Riesz curvature flows and characterize its limit as $s\to 0^-$. We prove existence of partitions of an open set $\Omega$ with a given number of phases, which minimize the sum of the fractional perimeters of all the phases, with Dirichlet boundary conditions. In two dimensions we show that, if the fractional parameter $s$ is sufficiently close to $1$, the only singular minimal cone, that is, the only minimal partition invariant by dilations and with a singular point, is given by three half-lines meeting at $120$ degrees. For a given family of smooth closed curves $\gamma^1,...,\gamma^\alpha\subset\mathbb{R}^3$ we consider the problem of finding an elastic \emph{connected} compact surface $M$ with boundary $\gamma=\gamma^1\cup...\cup\gamma^\alpha$. This is realized by minimizing the Willmore energy $\mathcal{W}$ on a suitable class of competitors. While the direct minimization of the Area functional may lead to limits that are disconnected, we prove that, if the infimum of the problem is $<4\pi$, there exists a connected compact minimizer of $\mathcal{W}$ in the class of integer rectifiable curvature varifolds with the assigned boundary conditions. This is done by proving that varifold convergence of bounded varifolds with boundary with uniformly bounded Willmore energy implies the convergence of their supports in Hausdorff distance. Hence, in the cases in which a small perturbation of the boundary conditions causes the non-existence of Area-minimizing connected surfaces, our minimization process models the existence of optimal elastic connected compact generalized surfaces with such boundary data. We also study the asymptotic regime in which the diameter of the optimal connected surfaces is arbitrarily large. Under suitable boundedness assumptions, we show that rescalings of such surfaces converge to round spheres. The study of both the perturbative and the asymptotic regime is motivated by the remarkable case of elastic surfaces connecting two parallel circles located at any possible distance one from the other. The main tool we use is the monotonicity formula for curvature varifolds, that we extend to varifolds with boundary, together with its consequences on the structure of varifolds with bounded Willmore energy.

We study the rate of convergence of some nonlocal functionals recently considered by Bourgain, Brezis and Mironescu. In particular we establish the $\Gamma$-convergence of the corresponding rate functionals, suitably rescaled, to a limit functional of second order., Comment: 26 pages

We introduce a notion of connected perimeter for planar sets defined as the lower semi-continuous envelope of perimeters of approximating sets which are measure-theoretically connected. A companion notion of simply connected perimeter is also studied. We prove a representation formula which links the connected perimeter, the classical perimeter, and the length of suitable Steiner trees. This paper provides a unified point of view on fractional perimeters and Riesz potentials. Denoting by $H^\sigma$ - for $\sigma\in (0,1)$ - the $\sigma$-fractional perimeter and by $J^\sigma$ - for $\sigma\in (-d,0)$ - the $\sigma$-Riesz energies acting on characteristic functions, we prove that both functionals can be seen as limits of renormalized self-attractive energies as well as limits of repulsive interactions between a set and its complement. We also show that the functionals $H^\sigma$ and $J^\sigma$\,, up to a suitable additive renormalization diverging when $\sigma\to 0$, belong to a continuous one-parameter family of functionals, which for $\sigma=0$ gives back a new object we refer to as {\it $0$-fractional perimeter}. All the convergence results with respect to the parameter $\sigma$ and to the renormalization procedures are obtained in the framework of $\Gamma$-convergence. As a byproduct of our analysis, we obtain the isoperimetric inequality for the $0$-fractional perimeter.

We present a collection of results on the evolution by curvature of networks of planar curves. This paper establishes a theory of nonlinear spectral decompositions by considering the eigenvalue problem related to an absolutely one-homogeneous functional in an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space. This approach is both motivated by works for the total variation, where interesting results on the eigenvalue problem and the relation to the total variation flow have been proven previously, and by recent results on finite-dimensional polyhedral semi-norms, where gradient flows can yield spectral decompositions into eigenvectors. We provide a geometric characterization of eigenvectors via a dual unit ball and prove them to be subgradients of minimal norm. This establishes the connection to gradient flows, whose time evolution is a decomposition of the initial condition into subgradients of minimal norm. If these are eigenvectors, this implies an interesting orthogonality relation and the equivalence of the gradient flow to a variational regularization method and an inverse scale space flow. Indeed we verify that all scenarios where these equivalences were known before by other arguments - such as one-dimensional total variation, multidimensional generalizations to vector fields, or certain polyhedral semi-norms - yield spectral decompositions, and we provide further examples. We show existence of homothetically shrinking solutions of the fractional mean curvature flow, whose boundary consists in a prescribed numbers of concentric spheres. We prove that all these solutions, except from the ball, are dynamically unstable., Comment: 12 pages

We consider an energy functional combining the square of the local oscillation of a one--dimensional function with a double well potential. We establish the existence of minimal heteroclinic solutions connecting the two wells of the potential. This existence result cannot be accomplished by standard methods, due to the lack of compactness properties. In addition, we investigate the main properties of these heteroclinic connections. We show that these minimizers are monotone, and therefore they satisfy a suitable Euler-Lagrange equation. We also prove that, differently from the classical cases arising in ordinary differential equations, in this context the heteroclinic connections are not necessarily smooth, and not even continuous (in fact, they can be piecewise constant). Also, we show that heteroclinics are not necessarily unique up to a translation, which is also in contrast with the classical setting. Furthermore, we investigate the associated Dirichlet problem, studying existence, uniqueness and partial regularity properties, providing explicit solutions in terms of the external data and of the forcing source, and exhibiting an example of discontinuous solution.

This paper is concerned with the diffuse interface Ohta-Kawasaki energy in three space dimensions, in a periodic setting, in the parameter regime corresponding to the onset of non-trivial minimizers. We identify the scaling in which a sharp transition from asymptotically trivial to non-trivial minimizers takes place as the small parameter characterizing the width of the interfaces between the two phases goes to zero, while the volume fraction of the minority phases vanishes at an appropriate rate. The value of the threshold is shown to be related to the optimal binding energy solution of Gamow's liquid drop model of the atomic nucleus. Beyond the threshold the average volume fraction of the minority phase is demonstrated to grow linearly with the distance to the threshold. In addition to these results, we establish a number of properties of the minimizers of the sharp interface screened Ohta-Kawasaki energy in the considered parameter regime. We also establish rather tight upper and lower bounds on the value of the transition threshold., Comment: 25 pages

We develop a phase-field approximation of the relaxation of the perimeter functional in the plane under a connectedness constraint based on the classical Modica-Mortola functional and the connectedness constraint of (Dondl, Lemenant, Wojtowytsch 2017). We prove convergence of the approximating energies and present numerical results and applications to image segmentation.

We discuss fattening phenomenon for the evolution of planar curves according to their nonlocal curvature. More precisely, we consider a class of generalized curvatures which correspond to the first variation of suitable nonlocal perimeter functionals, defined in terms of an interaction kernel $K$, which is symmetric, nonnegative, possibly singular at the origin, and satisfies appropriate integrability conditions. We prove a general result about uniqueness of the geometric evolutions starting from regular sets with positive $K$-curvature and we discuss the fattening phenomenon for the evolution starting from the cross, showing that this phenomenon is very sensitive to the strength of the interactions. As a matter of fact, we show that the fattening of the cross occurs for kernels with sufficiently large mass near the origin, while for kernels that are sufficiently weak near the origin such a fattening phenomenon does not occur. We also provide some further results in the case of the fractional mean curvature flow, showing that strictly starshaped sets have a unique geometric evolution. Moreover, we exhibit two illustrative examples of closed nonregular curves, the first with a Lipschitz-type singularity and the second with a cusp-type singularity, given by two tangent circles of equal radius, whose evolution develops fattening in the first case, and is uniquely defined in the second, thus remarking the high sensitivity of the fattening phenomenon in terms of the regularity of the initial datum. The latter example is in striking contrast to the classical case of the (local) curvature flow, where two tangent circles always develop fattening. As a byproduct of our analysis, we provide also a simple proof of the fact that the cross is not a $K$-minimal set for the nonlocal perimeter functional associated to $K$.

We consider a potential $W:R^m\rightarrow R$ with two different global minima $a_-, a_+$ and, under a symmetry assumption, we use a variational approach to show that the Hamiltonian system \begin{equation} \ddot{u}=W_u(u), \hskip 2cm (1) \end{equation} has a family of $T$-periodic solutions $u^T$ which, along a sequence $T_j\rightarrow+\infty$, converges locally to a heteroclinic solution that connects $a_-$ to $a_+$. We then focus on the elliptic system \begin{equation} \Delta u=W_u(u),\;\; u:R^2\rightarrow R^m, \hskip 2cm (2) \end{equation} that we interpret as an infinite dimensional analogous of (1), where $x$ plays the role of time and $W$ is replaced by the action functional \[J_R(u)=\int_R\Bigl(\frac{1}{2}\vert u_y\vert^2+W(u)\Bigr)dy.\] We assume that $J_R$ has two different global minimizers $\bar{u}_-, \bar{u}_+:R\rightarrow R^m$ in the set of maps that connect $a_-$ to $a_+$. We work in a symmetric context and prove, via a minimization procedure, that (2) has a family of solutions $u^L:R^2\rightarrow R^m$, which is $L$-periodic in $x$, converges to $a_\pm$ as $y\rightarrow\pm\infty$ and, along a sequence $L_j\rightarrow+\infty$, converges locally to a heteroclinic solution that connects $\bar{u}_-$ to $\bar{u}_+$., Comment: 36 pages, 4 figures

We consider low energy configurations for the Heitmann-Radin sticky discs functional, in the limit of diverging number of discs. More precisely, we renormalize the Heitmann-Radin potential by subtracting the minimal energy per particle, i.e., the so called kissing number. For configurations whose energy scales like the perimeter, we prove a compactness result which shows the emergence of polycrystalline structures: The empirical measure converges to a set of finite perimeter, while a microscopic variable, representing the orientation of the underlying lattice, converges to a locally constant function. Whenever the limit configuration is a single crystal, i.e., it has constant orientation, we show that the $\Gamma$-limit is the anisotropic perimeter, corresponding to the Finsler metric determined by the orientation of the single crystal.
