We combine the theory of Cartan-Tanaka prolongations with the Molien-Weyl integral formula and Hilbert-Poincar\'e series to compute the Spencer cohomology groups of the $D=11$ Poincar\'e superalgebra $\mathfrak p$, relevant for superspace formulations of $11$-dimensional supergravity in terms of nonholonomic superstructures. This includes novel fermionic Spencer groups, providing with new cohomology classes of $\mathbb Z$-grading $1$ and form number $2$. Using the Hilbert-Poincar\'e series and the Euler characteristic, we also explore Spencer cohomology contributions in higher form numbers. We then propose a new general definition of filtered deformations of graded Lie superalgebras along first-order fermionic directions and investigate such deformations of $\mathfrak p$ that are maximally supersymmetric. In particular, we establish a no-go type theorem for maximally supersymmetric filtered subdeformations of $\mathfrak p$ along timelike (i.e., generic) first-order fermionic directions., Comment: 44 pp. Latex2e

A class of globally scale-invariant scalar-tensor theories have been proposed to be invariant under a larger class of transformations that take the form of local Weyl transformations supplemented by a restriction that the conformal factor satisfies a covariant Klein-Gordon equation. The action of these theories indeed seems to be invariant under such transformations up to boundary terms, this property being referred to as ``restricted Weyl symmetry''. However, we find that corresponding equations of motion are not invariant under these transformations. This is a paradox, that is explained by realizing that the restriction condition on the conformal factor forces the restricted Weyl transformation to be a nonlocal transformation. For nonlocal transformations would-be boundary terms cannot in general be discarded from the action. Moreover, variations of trajectories cannot be assumed to vanish at boundaries of the action when deriving equations of motion. We illustrate both of these less known properties by considering a series of simple examples. This paper deals with quantitative spectral stability for Aharonov-Bohm operators with many colliding poles of whichever circulation. An equivalent formulation of the eigenvalue problem is derived as a system of two equations with real coefficients, coupled through prescribed jumps of the unknowns and their normal derivatives across the segments joining the poles with the collision point. Under the assumption that the sum of all circulations is not integer, the dominant term in the asymptotic expansion for eigenvalues is characterized in terms of the minimum of an energy functional associated with the configuration of poles. Estimates of the order of vanishing of the eigenvalue variation are then deduced from a blow-up analysis, yielding sharp asymptotics in some particular examples.

The ALICE collaboration is proposing a completely new detector, ALICE 3, for operation during the LHC Runs 5 and 6. One of the ALICE~3 subsystems is the Muon IDentifier detector (MID), which has to be optimised to be efficient for the reconstruction of $J/\psi$ at rest (muons down to $p_{\rm T}\approx1.5$ GeV/$c$) for $|\eta|<1.3$. Given the modest particle flux expected in the MID of a few Hz/cm$^2$, technologies like plastic scintillator bars ($\approx1$ m length) equipped with wavelength-shifting fibers and silicon photomultiplier readout, and lightweight Multi-Wire Proportional Chambers (MWPCs) are under investigation. To this end, different plastic scintillator paddles and MWPCs were studied at the CERN T10 test beam facility. This paper reports on the performance of the scintillator prototypes tested at different beam momenta (from 0.5 GeV/$c$ up to 6 GeV/$c$) and positions (horizontal, vertical, and angular scans). We deal with the following semilinear equation in exterior domains \[-\Delta u + u = a(x)|u|^{p-2}u,\qquad u\in H^1_0({A_R}), \] where ${A_R} := \{x\in\mathbb{R}^N:\, |x|>{R}\}$, $N\ge 3$, $R>0$. Assuming that the weight $a$ is positive and satisfies some symmetry and monotonicity properties, we exhibit a positive solution having the same features as $a$, for values of $p>2$ in a suitable range that includes exponents greater than the standard Sobolev critical one. In the special case of radial weight $a$, our existence result ensures multiplicity of nonradial solutions. The behavior of simple eigenvalues of Aharonov-Bohm operators with many coalescing poles is discussed. In the case of half-integer circulation, a gauge transformation makes the problem equivalent to an eigenvalue problem for the Laplacian in a domain with straight cracks, laying along the moving directions of poles. For this problem, we obtain an asymptotic expansion for eigenvalues, in which the dominant term is related to the minimum of an energy functional associated with the configuration of poles and defined on a space of functions suitably jumping through the cracks. Concerning configurations with an odd number of poles, an accurate blow-up analysis identifies the exact asymptotic behaviour of eigenvalues and the sign of the variation in some cases. We consider general torsion components in three-dimensional Einstein-Cartan gravity, providing a geometrical interpretation for matter, and find new solutions of the corresponding equations for the Riemann curvature and torsion. These geometries involve a peculiar interplay between the vector $(\beta_i)$ and the singlet $(\tau)$ irreducible components of the torsion which, under general conditions, feature a formal analogy with the equation for a Beltrami fluid. Interestingly, we find that the local AdS$_3$ geometry is now deformed by effect of the "Beltrami-torsion" $\beta_i$. Some of these new solutions describe deformations of the BTZ black hole due to the presence of torsion. We present the full Lagrangian and supersymmetry transformation rules for the gauged D=4, N=4 (half-maximal) supergravity coupled to an arbitrary number of vector multiplets. Using the embedding tensor formulation, the final results are universal and valid in arbitrary symplectic frames. We also analyze the conditions for the critical points of the scalar potential and specify the full spectrum of the quadratic fluctuations about Minkowski vacua. This allows us also to exclude the appearance of quadratic divergences in the 1-loop corrections to the scalar potential for any Minkowski vacuum fully breaking supersymmetry. Motivated by Sen's spacetime prescription for the construction of theories with self-dual field strengths, we present a rigid superspace Lagrangian describing noninteracting tensor multiplets living on a stack of M5-branes and containing all the physical constraints on the fields, yielding the on-shell matching of the degrees of freedom. The geometric superspace approach adopted here offers a natural realization of superdiffeomorphisms and is particularly well suited for the coupling to supergravity. However, within this formulation the (anti-)self-duality property of the 3-form field strengths is lost when the superspace Lagrangian is trivially restricted to spacetime. In this paper we deal with the equation \[-\Delta_p u+|u|^{p-2}u=|u|^{q-2}u\] for $1p$, under Neumann boundary conditions in the unit ball of $\mathbb R^N$. We focus on the three positive, radial, and radially non-decreasing solutions, whose existence for $q$ large is proved in [13]. We detect the limit profile as $q\to\infty$ of the higher energy solution and show that, unlike the minimal energy one, it converges to the constant $1$. We develop a three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ theory of rigid supersymmetry describing the dynamics of a set of hypermultiplets $(\Lambda^{\alpha\alpha'\dot{\alpha}'}_I,\,\phi^{\alpha A}_I)$ on a curved AdS$_3$ worldvolume background, whose supersymmetry is captured by the supergroup ${\rm D}^2(2,1;\, \boldsymbol{\alpha})$. To unveil some remarkable features of this model, we perform two twists, involving the SL$(2,\mathbb R)$ factors of the theory. After the first twist, our spacetime Lagrangian exhibits a Chern-Simons term associated with an odd one-form field, together with a fermionic "gauge-fixing'', in the spirit of the Rozansky-Witten model. The second twist allows to interpret the ${\rm D}^2(2,1;\, \boldsymbol{\alpha})$ setup as a framework capable of describing massive Dirac particles. In particular, this yields a generalisation of the Alvarez-Valenzuela-Zanelli model of ''unconventional supersymmetry''. We deal with eigenvalue problems for the Laplacian with varying mixed boundary conditions, consisting in homogeneous Neumann conditions on a vanishing portion of the boundary and Dirichlet conditions on the complement. By the study of an Almgren type frequency function, we derive upper and lower bounds of the eigenvalue variation and sharp estimates in the case of a strictly star-shaped Neumann region.

By a combination of variational and topological techniques in the presence of invariant cones, we detect a new type of positive axially symmetric solutions of the Dirichlet problem for the elliptic equation $$ -\Delta u + u = a(x)|u|^{p-2}u $$ in an annulus $A \subset \mathbb R^N$ ($N\ge3$). Here $p>2$ is allowed to be supercritical and $a(x)$ is an axially symmetric but possibly nonradial function with additional symmetry and monotonicity properties, which are shared by the solution $u$ we construct. We develop in detail the holographic framework for an $\mathcal{N}=2$ pure AdS supergravity model in four dimensions, including all the contributions from the fermionic fields and adopting the Fefferman-Graham parametrization. We work in the first order formalism, where the full superconformal structure can be kept manifest in principle, even if only a part of it is realized as a symmetry on the boundary, while the remainder has a non-linear realization. Our study generalizes the results presented in antecedent literature and includes a general discussion of the gauge-fixing conditions on the bulk fields which yield the asymptotic symmetries at the boundary. We construct the corresponding superconformal currents and show that they satisfy the related Ward identities when the bulk equations of motion are imposed. Consistency of the holographic setup requires the super-AdS curvatures to vanish at the boundary. This determines, in particular, the expression of the super-Schouten tensor of the boundary theory, which generalizes the purely bosonic Schouten tensor of standard gravity by including gravitini bilinears. The same applies to the superpartner of the super-Schouten tensor, the conformino. Two modules of the AD detector have been studied with the test beam at the T10 facility at CERN. The AD detector is made of scintillator pads read out by wave-length shifters (WLS)coupled to clean fibres that carry the produced light to photo-multiplier tubes (PMTs). In ALICE the AD is used to trigger and study the physics of diffractive and ultra-peripheral collisions as well as for a variety of technical tasks like beam-gas background monitoring or as a luminometer. The position dependence of the modules' efficiency has been measured and the effect of hits on the WLS or PMTs has been evaluated. The charge deposited by pions and protons has been measured at different momenta of the test beam. The time resolution is determined as a function of the deposited charge. These results are important ingredients to better understand the AD detector, to benchmark the corresponding simulations, and very importantly they served as a baseline for a similar device, the Forward Diffractive Detector (FDD), being currently built and that will be in operation in ALICE during the LHC Runs 3 and 4., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

In this work we consider the homogeneous Neumann eigenvalue problem for the Laplacian on a bounded Lipschitz domain and a singular perturbation of it, which consists in prescribing zero Dirichlet boundary conditions on a small subset of the boundary. We first describe the sharp asymptotic behaviour of a perturbed eigenvalue, in the case in which it is converging to a simple eigenvalue of the limit Neumann problem. The first term in the asymptotic expansion turns out to depend on the Sobolev capacity of the subset where the perturbed eigenfunction is vanishing. We define spin frames, with the aim of extending spin structures from the category of (pseudo-)Riemannian manifolds to the category of spin manifolds with a fixed signature on them, though with no selected metric structure. We derive a $2+1$ dimensional model with unconventional supersymmetry at the boundary of an ${\rm AdS}_4$ $\mathcal{N}$-extended supergravity, generalizing previous results. The (unconventional) extended supersymmetry of the boundary model is instrumental in describing, within a top-down approach, the electronic properties of graphene-like 2D materials at the two Dirac points, ${\bf K}$ and ${\bf K}'$. The two valleys correspond to the two independent sectors of the ${\rm OSp}(p|2)\times {\rm OSp}(q|2)$ boundary model in the $p=q$ case, which are related by a parity transformation. We consider the eigenvalue problem for the restricted fractional Laplacian in a bounded domain with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. We introduce the notion of fractional capacity for compact subsets, with the property that the eigenvalues are not affected by the removal of zero fractional capacity sets. The future of exoplanet detection lies in the mid-infrared (MIR). The MIR region contains the blackbody peak of both hot and habitable zone exoplanets, making the contrast between starlight and planet light less extreme. It is also the region where prominent chemical signatures indicative of life exist, such as ozone at 9.7 microns. At a wavelength of 4 microns the difference in emission between an Earth-like planet and a star like our own is 80 dB. However a jovian planet, at the same separation exhibits 60 dB of contrast, or only 20 dB if it is hot due to its formation energy or being close to its host star. A two dimensional nulling interferometer, made with chalcogenide glass, has been measured to produce a null of 20 dB, limited by scattered light. The goal of this report is to give a comprehensive overview of the rich field of forward physics, with a special attention to the topics that can be studied at the LHC. In this paper, we investigate the behavior of the eigenvalues of a magnetic Aharonov-Bohm operator with half-integer circulation and Dirichlet boundary conditions in a bounded planar domain. We establish a sharp relation between the rate of convergence of the eigenvalues as the singular pole is approaching a boundary point and the number of nodal lines of the eigenfunction of the limiting problem, i.e. of the Dirichlet Laplacian, ending at that point. In the regime $\lambda\to 0$, we study the radial bifurcations and we construct radial solutions by a gluing variational method. For any given natural positive number $n$, we build a solution having multiple layers at $r_1,\ldots,r_n$ by which we mean that the solutions concentrate on the spheres of radii $r_i$ as $\lambda\to 0$ (for all $i=1,\ldots,n$). A remarkable fact is that, in opposition to previous known results, the layers of the solutions do not accumulate to the boundary of $\Omega$ as $\lambda\to 0$. We continue the analysis started in [Noris,Terracini,Indiana Univ Math J,2010] and [Bonnaillie-No\"el,Noris,Nys,Terracini,Analysis & PDE,2014], concerning the behavior of the eigenvalues of a magnetic Schr\"odinger operator of Aharonov-Bohm type with half-integer circulation. We consider a planar domain with Dirichlet boundary conditions and we concentrate on the case when the singular pole approaches the boundary of the domain. The $k$-th magnetic eigenvalue converges to the $k$-th eigenvalue of the Laplacian. We can predict both the rate of convergence and whether the convergence happens from above or from below, in relation with the number of nodal lines of the $k$-th eigenfunction of the Laplacian. The proof relies on a detailed asymptotic analysis of the eigenfunctions, based on an Almgren-type frequency formula for magnetic eigenfunctions and on the blow-up technique., Comment: 39 pages, 7 figures

For the cubic Schr\"odinger system with trapping potentials in $\mathbb{R}^N$, $N\leq3$, or in bounded domains, we investigate the existence and the orbital stability of standing waves having components with prescribed $L^2$-mass. We provide a variational characterization of such solutions, which gives information on the stability through of a condition of Grillakis-Shatah-Strauss type. As an application, we show existence of conditionally orbitally stable solitary waves when: a) the masses are small, for almost every scattering lengths, and b) in the defocusing, weakly interacting case, for any masses., Comment: 29 pages

We study minimizers of a Gross--Pitaevskii energy describing a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a radially symmetric harmonic trap and set into rotation. We consider the case of coexistence of the components in the Thomas-Fermi regime, where a small parameter $\ep$ conveys a singular perturbation. The minimizer of the energy without rotation is determined as the positive solution of a system of coupled PDE's for which we show uniqueness. The limiting problem for $\ep =0$ has degenerate and irregular behavior at specific radii, where the gradient blows up. By means of a perturbation argument, we obtain precise estimates for the convergence of the minimizer to this limiting profile, as $\ep$ tends to 0. For low rotation, based on these estimates, we can show that the ground states remain real valued and do not have vortices, even in the region of small density.

We consider a magnetic operator of Aharonov-Bohm type with Dirichlet boundary conditions in a planar domain. We analyse the behavior of its eigenvalues as the singular pole moves in the domain. For any value of the circulation we prove that the k-th magnetic eigenvalue converges to the k-th eigenvalue of the Laplacian as the pole approaches the boundary. We show that the magnetic eigenvalues depend in a smooth way on the position of the pole, as long as they remain simple. In case of half-integer circulation, we show that the rate of convergence depends on the number of nodal lines of the corresponding magnetic eigenfunction. In addition, we provide several numerical simulations both on the circular sector and on the square, which find a perfect theoretical justification within our main results, together with the ones in [Bonnaillie-No\"el, V., Helffer, B., Exp. We study solutions of a semilinear elliptic equation with prescribed mass and Dirichlet homogeneous boundary conditions in the unitary ball. Such problem arises in the search of solitary wave solutions for nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations (NLS) with Sobolev subcritical power nonlinearity on bounded domains. Necessary and sufficient conditions are provided for the existence of such solutions. Moreover, we show that standing waves associated to least energy solutions are always orbitally stable when the nonlinearity is L^2-critical and subcritical, while they are almost always stable in the L^2-supercritical regime. The proofs are obtained in connection with the study of a variational problem with two constraints, of independent interest: to maximize the L^{p+1}-norm among functions having prescribed L^2 and H^1_0-norm., Comment: 31 pages, 1 figure

In this paper we report the results of a detailed investigation of the complete time evolution of massless fermion fields propagating in spacetimes of higher dimensional stringy black hole solutions, obtained from intersecting branes in string/$M$ theory. We write the Dirac equation in $D$-dimensional spacetime in a form suitable to perform a numerical integration of it, and using a Prony fitting of the time domain data, we determine the quasinormal frequencies that characterize the test field evolution at intermediary times. We also present the results obtained for the quasinormal frequencies using a sixth order WKB approximation, that are in perfect agreement with the numerical results. The power law exponents that describe the field relaxation at very late times are also determined, and we show that they depends upon the dimensionality of space-time, and are identical to that associated with the relaxation of boson fields for odd dimensions. The dependance of the frequencies and damping factor of the spinor field with the charges of the stringy black hole are studied., Comment: 32 pages, 8 figures

For a class of quasilinear elliptic equations involving the p-Laplace operator, we develop an abstract critical point theory in the presence of sub-supersolutions. Our approach is based upon the proof of the invariance under the gradient flow of enlarged cones in the $W^{1,p}_0$ topology. With this, we prove abstract existence and multiplicity theorems in the presence of variously ordered pairs of sub-supersolutions. For a regular functional J defined on a Hilbert space X, we consider the set N of points x of X such that the projection of the gradient of J at x onto a closed linear subspace V(x) of X vanishes. We study sufficient conditions for a constrained critical point of J restricted to N to be a free critical point of J, providing a unified approach to different natural constraints known in the literature, such as the Birkhoff-Hestenes natural isoperimetric conditions and the Nehari manifold. We study the existence of positive increasing radial solutions for superlinear Neumann problems in the ball. We do not impose any growth condition on the nonlinearity at infinity and our assumptions allow for interactions with the spectrum. In our approach we use both topological and variational arguments, and we overcome the lack of compactness by considering the cone of nonnegative, nondecreasing radial functions of H^1., Comment: 16 pages

We provide a sufficient condition for the existence of a positive solution to $-\Delta u+V(|x|) u=u^p$ in $B_1$, when p is large enough. Here $B_1$ is the unit ball of $R^n$, n greater or equal to 2, and we deal both with Neumann and Dirichlet homogeneous boundary conditions. The solution turns to be a constrained minimum of the associated energy functional. As an application we show that, in case $V(|x|)$ is smooth, nonnegative and not identically zero, and p is sufficiently large, the Neumann problem always admits a solution., Comment: 13 pages
