A static limit analysis approach is proposed for assessing the collapse capacity of axisymmetric masonry domes subject to horizontal forces. The problem formulation is based on the sound theoretical framework provided by the classical statics of shells. After introducing the shell stress tensors on the dome mid-surface, integral equilibrium equations are enforced for its typical part. Heyman's assumptions of infinite compressive and vanishing tensile strengths are made, with cohesionless friction behavior governing the shear strength, to characterize the admissible stress states in the dome. An original computational strategy is developed to address the resulting static limit analysis problem, involving the introduction of a mesh on the dome mid-surface, the interpolation of the physical components of the shell stress tensors on the element boundaries, and the imposition of equilibrium and admissibility conditions respectively for the elements and at the nodes of the mesh. The descending discrete convex optimization problem is solved by standard and effective optimization tools, automatically providing collapse multiplier of horizontal forces, incipient collapse mechanism and expected crack pattern. Convergence analysis, validation with experimental results available in the literature, and parametric analyses with respect to geometric parameters and friction coefficient, are presented for spherical and ellipsoidal masonry domes, proving the reliability of the proposed approach for estimating the pseudo-static seismic resistance of masonry domes., Comment: 29 pages, 11 figures

We derive a homogenized mechanical model of a masonry-type structure constituted by a periodic assemblage of blocks with interposed mortar joints. The energy functionals in the model under investigation consist in (i) a linear elastic contribution within the blocks, (ii) a Barenblatt's cohesive contribution at contact surfaces between blocks and (iii) a suitable unilateral condition on the strain across contact surfaces, and are governed by a small parameter representing the typical ratio between the length of the blocks and the dimension of the structure. Using the terminology of Gamma-convergence and within the functional setting supplied by the functions of bounded deformation, we analyze the asymptotic behavior of such energy functionals when the parameter tends to zero, and derive a simple homogenization formula for the limit energy. Furthermore, we highlight the main mathematical and mechanical properties of the homogenized energy, including its non-standard growth conditions under tension or compression. The key point in the limit process is the definition of macroscopic tensile and compressive stresses, which are determined by the unilateral conditions on contact surfaces and the geometry of the blocks.

As inelastic structures are ubiquitous in many engineering fields, a central task in computational mechanics is to develop accurate, robust and efficient tools for their analysis. Motivated by the poor performances exhibited by standard displacement-based finite element formulations, attention is here focused on the use of mixed methods as approximation technique, within the small strain framework, for the mechanical problem of inelastic bidimensional structures. Despite a great flexibility characterizes mixed element formulations, several theoretical and numerical aspects have to be carefully taken into account in the design of a high-performance element. The present work aims at providing the basis for methodological analysis and comparison in such aspects, within the unified mathematical setting supplied by generalized standard material model and with special interest towards elastoplastic media. A critical review of the state-of-the-art computational methods is delivered in regard to variational formulations, selection of interpolation spaces, numerical solution strategies and numerical stability. Though those arguments are interrelated, a topic-oriented presentation is resorted to, for the very rich available literature to be properly examined. Finally, the performances of several significant mixed finite element formulations are investigated in numerical simulations.
