Search

The magnetic fields that emerge from beneath the solar surface and permeate the solar atmosphere are the key drivers of space weather and, thus, understanding them is important to human society. Direct observations, used to measure magnetic fields, can only probe the magnetic fields in the photosphere and above, far from the regions the magnetic fields are being enhanced by the solar dynamo. Solar gamma rays produced by cosmic rays interacting with the solar atmosphere have been detected from GeV to TeV energy range, and revealed that they are significantly affected by solar magnetic fields. However, much of the observations are yet to be explained by a physical model. Using a semi-analytic model, we show that magnetic fields at and below the photosphere with a large horizontal component could explain the $\sim$1 TeV solar gamma rays observed by HAWC. Many well motivated dark matter (DM) particle candidates can decay into detectable X-ray photons. We analyze the Final Equatorial Depth Survey (eFEDS) data from eROSITA early data release to search for unidentified X-ray lines that could indicate DM signals. Having discovered no anomalous signal, we set limits on DM decay rate in mass range between 1.8-18 keV, and constrain the parameter space of two DM particles: sterile neutrino and axion-like particles. The particle nature of dark matter (DM) has been a long-lasting mystery. Many models suggest that DM could decay or self annihilate into standard model particles, and thus could be a source of gamma rays in the sky. The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory has yielded some of the strongest limits in searches of DM decay or annihilation. Building on the flux limits provided by the HAWC collaboration in 2018, we consider the effects of additional components from Galactic secondary Inverse-Compton scatterings and extragalactic DM distributions. We find that these effects can significantly improve the DM constraints, up to an order of magnitude in some cases. Primordial black holes~(PBHs) formed in the early Universe are well-motivated dark matter~(DM) candidates over a wide range of masses. These PBHs could emit detectable signals in the form of photons, electrons, and neutrinos through Hawking radiation. We consider the null observations of astrophysical $\bar{\nu}_{e}$ flux from several neutrino detectors and set new constraints on the PBHs as the dominant DM component to be above $6.4\times10^{15}\,{\rm g}$. We also estimate the expected constraints with JUNO for the prospects in the near future. Lastly, we note that the diffuse supernova neutrino background~(DSNB) is an unavoidable isotropic background. We thus estimate the sensitivity floor for PBH parameter space due to the DSNB and show that it is challenging for neutrino detectors to identify PBHs as they constitute 100\% of the DM above a mass of 9$\times10^{15}$g., Comment: It matches with the published version

Interactions between photons and electrons are ubiquitous in astrophysics. Photons can be down scattered (Compton scattering) or up scattered (inverse Compton scattering) by moving electrons. Inverse Compton scattering, in particular, is an essential process for the production of astrophysical gamma rays. Computations of inverse Compton emission typically adopts an isotropic or an ultrarelativistic assumption to simplify the calculation, which makes them unable to broadcast the formula to the whole phase space of source particles. In view of this, we develop a numerical scheme to compute the interactions between anisotropic photons and electrons without taking ultrarelativistic approximations. Compared to the ultrarelativistic limit, our exact results show major deviations when target photons are down scattered or when they possess energy comparable to source electrons. We also consider two test cases of high-energy inverse Compton emission to validate our results in the ultrarelativistic limit. We present two complementary NuSTAR x-ray searches for keV-scale dark matter decaying to mono-energetic photons in the Milky Way halo. In the first, we utilize the known intensity pattern of unfocused stray light across the detector planes -- the dominant source of photons from diffuse sources -- to separate astrophysical emission from internal instrument backgrounds using ${\sim}$7-Ms/detector deep blank-sky exposures. In the second, we present an updated parametric model of the full NuSTAR instrument background, allowing us to leverage the statistical power of an independent ${\sim}$20-Ms/detector stacked exposures spread across the sky. Finding no evidence of anomalous x-ray lines using either method, we set limits on the active-sterile mixing angle $\sin^2(2\theta)$ for sterile-neutrino masses 6--40 keV. The first key result is that we strongly disfavor a ${\sim}$7-keV sterile neutrino decaying into a 3.5-keV photon. The second is that we derive leading limits on sterile neutrinos with masses ${\sim}$15--18 keV and ${\sim}$25--40 keV, reaching or extending below the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis limit. Warm dark matter (WDM) can potentially explain small-scale observations that currently challenge the cold dark matter (CDM) model, as warm particles suppress structure formation due to free-streaming effects. Observing small-scale matter distribution provides a valuable way to distinguish between CDM and WDM. In this work, we use observations from the Dark Energy Survey and PanSTARRS1, which observe 270 Milky-Way satellites after completeness corrections. We test WDM models by comparing the number of satellites in the Milky Way with predictions derived from the Semi-Analytical SubHalo Inference ModelIng (SASHIMI) code, which we develop based on the extended Press-Schechter formalism and subhalos' tidal evolution prescription. We robustly rule out WDM with masses lighter than 4.4 keV at 95% confidence level for the Milky-Way halo mass of $10^{12} M_\odot$. The limits are a weak function of the (yet uncertain) Milky-Way halo mass, and vary as $m_{\rm WDM}>3.6$-$5.1$ keV for $(0.6$-$2.0) \times 10^{12} M_\odot$. For the sterile neutrinos that form a subclass of WDM, we obtain the constraints of $m_{\nu_s}>11.6$ keV for the Milky-Way halo mass of $10^{12} M_{\odot}$. These results based on SASHIMI do not rely on any assumptions of galaxy formation physics or are not limited by numerical resolution. The models, therefore, offer a robust and fast way to constrain the WDM models. Dwarf spheroidal galaxies are dark matter dominated systems, and as such, ideal for indirect dark matter searches. If dark matter decays into high-energy photons in the dwarf galaxies, they will be a good target for current and future generations of X-ray and gamma-ray telescopes. By adopting the latest estimates of density profiles of dwarf galaxies in the Milky Way, we revise the estimates dark matter decay rates in dwarf galaxies; our results are more robust, but weaker than previous estimates. Applying these results, we study the detectability of dark matter decays with X-ray and very-high-energy gamma-ray telescopes, such as eROSITA, XRISM, Athena, HAWC, and CTA. Our projection shows that all of these X-ray telescopes will be able to critically assess the claim of the 7 keV sterile neutrino decays from stacked galaxy clusters and nearby galaxies. For TeV decaying dark matter, we can constrain its lifetime to be longer than $\sim$10$^{27}$-10$^{28}$ s. We also make projections for future dwarf galaxies that would be newly discovered with the Vera Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time, which will further improve the expected sensitivity to dark matter decays both in the keV and PeV mass ranges., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures; comments welcome

Dark matter might be made of "warm" particles, such as sterile neutrinos in the keV mass range, which can decay into photons through mixing and are consequently detectable by X-ray telescopes. Axionlike particles (ALPs) are detectable by X-ray telescopes too when coupled to standard model particles and decay into photons in the keV range. Both particles could explain the unidentified 3.5 keV line and, interestingly, XENON1T observed an excess of electron recoil events most prominent at 2-3 keV. One explanation could be an ALPs origin, which is not yet excluded by X-ray constraints in an anomaly-free symmetry model in which the photon production is suppressed. We study the diffuse emission coming from the Galactic halo, and calculate the sensitivity of all-sky X-ray survey performed by eROSITA to identify a sterile neutrino or ALP dark matter. We estimate bounds on the mixing angle of the sterile neutrinos and coupling strength of the ALPs. After four years of data-taking by eROSITA, we expect to set stringent constraints, and in particular, we expect to firmly probe mixing angle $\sin^2(2\theta)$ up to nearly two orders magnitude below the best-fit value for explaining the unidentified 3.5 keV line. Cosmic rays can interact with the solar atmosphere and produce a slew of secondary messengers, making the Sun a bright gamma-ray source in the sky. Detailed observations with Fermi-LAT have shown that these interactions must be strongly affected by solar magnetic fields in order to produce the wide range of observational features, such as high flux and hard spectrum. However, the detailed mechanisms behind these features are still a mystery. In this work, we tackle this problem by performing particle interaction simulations in the solar atmosphere in the presence of coronal magnetic fields modelled using the potential field source surface (PFSS) model. We find that the low-energy (~GeV) gamma-ray production is significantly enhanced by the coronal magnetic fields, but the enhancement decreases rapidly with energy. The enhancement is directly correlated with the production of gamma rays with large deviation angles relative to the input cosmic-ray direction. We conclude that coronal magnetic fields are essential for correctly modeling solar disk gamma rays below 10GeV, but above that the effect of coronal magnetic fields diminishes. Other magnetic field structures are needed to explain the high-energy disk emission.

The discovery of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos by IceCube has opened a new window to the Universe. However, the origin of these neutrinos is still a mystery, and some of them could be a result of dark matter interactions such as decay. Next generation gigaton water-Cherenkov neutrino telescope, KM3NeT, is expected to offer significantly improved energy resolution in the cascade channel, and advantageous viewing condition to the Galactic Center; both important for searches of dark matter decay signals. We study the sensitivity of KM3NeT on dark matter decays by performing a mock likelihood analysis for both cascade and track type events, taking into account both angular and energy information. We find that, combining both channels, KM3NeT is expected to produce world leading limits on dark matter decay lifetime in the PeV mass range, and could test some of the dark matter hints in the current IceCube data., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures. We analyze two dedicated NuSTAR observations with exposure ${\sim}190$ ks located ${\sim}10^\circ$ from the Galactic plane, one above and the other below, to search for x-ray lines from the radiative decay of sterile-neutrino dark matter. These fields were chosen to minimize astrophysical x-ray backgrounds while remaining near the densest region of the dark matter halo. We find no evidence of anomalous x-ray lines in the energy range 5--20 keV, corresponding to sterile neutrino masses 10--40 keV. Interpreted in the context of sterile neutrinos produced via neutrino mixing, these observations provide the leading constraints in the mass range 10--12 keV, improving upon previous constraints in this range by a factor ${\sim}2$. We also compare our results to Monte Carlo simulations, showing that the fluctuations in our derived limit are not dominated by systematic effects. Future space-based laser interferometry experiments such as LISA are expected to detect $\cal O$(100--1000) stellar-mass compact objects (e.g., black holes, neutron stars) falling into massive black holes in the centers of galaxies, the so-called extreme-mass-ratio inspirals (EMRIs). If dark matter forms a "spike" due to the growth of the massive black hole, it will induce a gravitational drag on the inspiraling object, changing its orbit and gravitational-wave signal. We show that detection of even a single dark matter spike from the EMRIs will severely constrain several popular dark matter candidates, such as ultralight bosons, keV fermions, MeV--TeV self-annihilating dark matter, and sub-solar mass primordial black holes, as these candidates would flatten the spikes through various mechanisms. We use a combined 1.2 Ms of $NuSTAR$ observations of M31 to search for X-ray lines from sterile neutrino dark matter decay. For the first time in a $NuSTAR$ analysis, we consistently take into account the signal contribution from both the focused and unfocused fields of view. We also reduce the modeling systematic uncertainty by performing spectral fits to each observation individually and statistically combining the results, instead of stacking the spectra. We find no evidence of unknown lines, and thus derive limits on the sterile neutrino parameters. Our results place stringent constraints for dark matter masses $\gtrsim 12$ keV, which reduces the available parameter space for sterile neutrino dark matter produced via neutrino mixing ($e.g.$, in the $\nu$MSM) by approximately one-third. Additional $NuSTAR$ observations, together with improved low-energy background modeling, could probe the remaining parameter space in the future. Sub-GeV dark matter candidates are of increasing interest, because long-favored candidates such as GeV-scale WIMPs have not been detected. For low-mass dark matter, model-independent constraints are weak or nonexistent. We show that for such candidates, because the number density is high, cosmic ray propagation can be affected by elastic scattering with dark matter. We call this type of search `reverse direct detection,' because dark matter is the target and Standard Model particles are the beam. Using a simple propagation model for galactic cosmic rays, we calculate how dark matter affects cosmic ray spectra at Earth, and set new limits on the dark matter-proton and dark matter-electron cross sections. For protons, our limit is competitive with cosmological constraints, but is independent. For electrons, our limit covers masses not yet probed, and improves on cosmological constraints by one to two orders of magnitude. Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) have long reigned as one of the leading classes of dark matter candidates. The observed dark matter abundance can be naturally obtained by freezeout of weak-scale dark matter annihilations in the early universe. This "thermal WIMP" scenario makes direct predictions for the total annihilation cross section that can be tested in present-day experiments. While the dark matter mass constraint can be as high as $m_\chi\gtrsim100$ GeV for particular annihilation channels, the constraint on the total cross section has not been determined. We construct the first model-independent limit on the WIMP total annihilation cross section, showing that allowed combinations of the annihilation-channel branching ratios considerably weaken the sensitivity. For thermal WIMPs with s-wave $2\rightarrow2$ annihilation to visible final states, we find the dark matter mass is only known to be $m_\chi\gtrsim20$ GeV. This is the strongest largely model-independent lower limit on the mass of thermal-relic WIMPs, together with the upper limit on the mass from the unitarity bound ($m_\chi\lesssim 100$ TeV), it defines what we call the "WIMP window". The solar disk is a bright source of multi-GeV gamma rays, due to the interactions of hadronic cosmic rays with the solar atmosphere. However, the underlying production mechanism is not understood, except that its efficiency must be greatly enhanced by magnetic fields that redirect some cosmic rays from ingoing to outgoing before they interact. To elucidate the nature of this emission, we perform a new analysis of solar atmospheric gamma rays with 9 years of Fermi-LAT data, which spans nearly the full 11-year solar cycle. We detect significant gamma-ray emission from the solar disk from 1 GeV up to $\gtrsim200$ GeV. The overall gamma-ray spectrum is much harder ($\sim E_{\gamma}^{-2.2}$) than the cosmic-ray spectrum ($\sim E_{\rm CR}^{-2.7}$). We find a clear anticorrelation between the solar cycle phase and the gamma-ray flux between 1-10 GeV. Surprisingly, we observe a spectral dip between $\sim$30-50 GeV in an otherwise power-law spectrum. This was not predicted, is not understood, and may provide crucial clues to the gamma-ray emission mechanism. The flux above 100 GeV, which is brightest during the solar minimum, poses exciting opportunities for HAWC, LHAASO, IceCube, and KM3NeT., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures. The observed multi-GeV gamma-ray emission from the solar disk --- sourced by hadronic cosmic rays interacting with gas, and affected by complex magnetic fields --- is not understood. Utilizing an improved analysis of the Fermi-LAT data that includes the first resolved imaging of the disk, we find strong evidence that this emission is produced by two separate mechanisms. Between 2010-2017 (the rise to and fall from solar maximum), the gamma-ray emission is dominated by a polar component. Between 2008-2009 (solar minimum) this component remains present, but the total emission is instead dominated by a new equatorial component with a brighter flux and harder spectrum. Most strikingly, although 6 gamma rays above 100 GeV are observed during the 1.4 years of solar minimum, none are observed during the next 7.8 years. These features, along with a 30-50 GeV spectral dip which will be discussed in a companion paper, were not anticipated by theory. As is well known, dark matter direct detection experiments will ultimately be limited by a "neutrino floor," due to the scattering of nuclei by MeV neutrinos from, e.g., nuclear fusion in the Sun. Here we point out the existence of a new "neutrino floor" that will similarly limit indirect detection with the Sun, due to high-energy neutrinos from cosmic-ray interactions with the solar atmosphere. We have two key findings. First, solar atmospheric neutrinos $\lesssim 1$ TeV cause a sensitivity floor for standard WIMP scenarios, for which higher-energy neutrinos are absorbed in the Sun. This floor will be reached once the present sensitivity is improved by just one order of magnitude. Second, for neutrinos $\gtrsim 1$ TeV, which can be isolated by muon energy loss rate, solar atmospheric neutrinos should soon be detectable in IceCube. Discovery will help probe the complicated effects of solar magnetic fields on cosmic rays. Dark matter capture and annihilation in the Sun can produce detectable high-energy neutrinos, providing a probe of the dark matter-proton scattering cross section. We consider the case when annihilation proceeds via long-lived dark mediators, which allows gamma rays to escape the Sun and reduces the attenuation of neutrinos. For gamma rays, there are exciting new opportunities, due to detailed measurements of GeV solar gamma rays with Fermi, and unprecedented sensitivities in the TeV range with HAWC and LHAASO. For neutrinos, the enhanced flux, particularly at higher energies ($\sim$TeV), allows a more sensitive dark matter search with IceCube and KM3NeT. The Sun is a bright source of GeV gamma rays, due to cosmic rays interacting with solar matter and photons. Key aspects of the underlying processes remain mysterious. The emission in the TeV range, for which there are neither observational nor theoretical studies, could provide crucial clues. The new experiments HAWC (running) and LHAASO (planned) can look at the Sun with unprecedented sensitivity. In this paper, we predict the very high-energy (up to 1000 TeV) gamma-ray flux from the solar disk and halo, due to cosmic-ray hadrons and electrons ($e^++e^-$), respectively. We neglect solar magnetic effects, which is valid at TeV energies; at lower energies, this gives a theoretical lower bound on the disk flux and a theoretical upper bound on the halo flux. We show that the solar-halo gamma-ray flux allows the first test of the $\sim 5$--70 TeV cosmic-ray electron spectrum. Further, we show that HAWC can immediately make an even stronger test with nondirectional observations of cosmic-ray electrons. Together, these gamma-ray and electron studies will provide new insights about the local density of cosmic rays and their interactions with the Sun and its magnetic environment. Indirect detection of dark matter is a major avenue for discovery. However, baryonic backgrounds are diverse enough to mimic many possible signatures of dark matter. In this work, we study the newly proposed technique of dark matter velocity spectroscopy\,\cite{speckhard2016}. The non-rotating dark matter halo and the Solar motion produce a distinct longitudinal dependence of the signal which is opposite in direction to that produced by baryons. Using collisionless dark matter only simulations of Milky Way like halos, we show that this new signature is robust and holds great promise. We develop mock observations by high energy resolution X-ray spectrometer on a sounding rocket, the Micro-X experiment, to our test case, the 3.5 keV line. We show that by using six different pointings, Micro-X can exclude a constant line energy over various longitudes at $\geq$ 3$\sigma$. The halo triaxiality is an important effect and it will typically reduce the significance of this signal. We emphasize that this new {\it smoking gun in motion} signature of dark matter is general, and is applicable to any dark matter candidate which produces a sharp photon feature in annihilation or decay., Comment: v2: 11 pages, 8 figures. We use NuSTAR observations of the Galactic Center to search for X-ray lines from the radiative decay of sterile neutrino dark matter. Finding no evidence of unknown lines, we set limits on the sterile neutrino mass and mixing angle. In most of the mass range 10-50 keV, these are now the strongest limits, at some masses improving upon previous limits by a factor of ~10. In the neutrino minimal standard model framework, where additional constraints from dark matter production and structure formation apply, the allowed parameter space is reduced by more than half. The solar disk is a bright gamma-ray source. Surprisingly, its flux is about one order of magnitude higher than predicted. As a first step toward understanding the physical origin of this discrepancy, we perform a new analysis in 1-100 GeV using 6 years of public Fermi-LAT data. Compared to the previous analysis by the Fermi Collaboration, who analyzed 1.5 years of data and detected the solar disk in 0.1-10 GeV, we find two new and significant results: 1. In the 1-10 GeV flux (detected at $>5\sigma$), we discover a significant time variation that anticorrelates with solar activity. 2. We detect gamma rays in 10-30 GeV at $>5\sigma$, and in 30-100 GeV at $> 2\sigma$. The time variation strongly indicates that solar-disk gamma rays are induced by cosmic rays and that solar atmospheric magnetic fields play an important role. Our results provide essential clues for understanding the underlying gamma-ray production processes, which may allow new probes of solar atmospheric magnetic fields, cosmic rays in the solar system, and possible new physics. Dark matter decays or annihilations that produce line-like spectra may be smoking-gun signals. However, even such distinctive signatures can be mimicked by astrophysical or instrumental causes. We show that velocity spectroscopy-the measurement of energy shifts induced by relative motion of source and observer-can separate these three causes with minimal theoretical uncertainties. The principal obstacle has been energy resolution, but upcoming experiments will reach the required 0.1% level. As an example, we show that the imminent Astro-H mission can use Milky Way observations to separate possible causes of the 3.5-keV line. A sterile neutrino of ~keV mass is a well motivated dark matter candidate. Its decay generates an X-ray line that offers a unique target for X-ray telescopes. For the first time, we use the Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) onboard the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope to search for sterile neutrino decay lines; our analysis covers the energy range 10-25 keV (sterile neutrino mass 20-50 keV), which is inaccessible to X-ray and gamma-ray satellites such as Chandra, Suzaku, XMM-Newton, and INTEGRAL. The extremely wide field of view of the GBM enables a large fraction of the Milky Way dark matter halo to be probed. After implementing careful data cuts, we obtain ~53 days of full sky observational data. We observe an excess of photons towards the Galactic Center, as expected from astrophysical emission. We search for sterile neutrino decay lines in the energy spectrum, and find no significant signal. From this, we obtain upper limits on the sterile neutrino mixing angle as a function of mass. In the sterile neutrino mass range 25-40 keV, we improve upon previous upper limits by approximately an order of magnitude. For the first time, we use the Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) on-board the Fermi satellite to search for sterile neutrino decay lines in the energy range 10-25 keV corresponding to sterile neutrino mass range 20-50 keV. This energy range has been out of reach of traditional X-ray satellites such as Chandra, Suzaku, XMM-Newton, and gamma-ray satellites such as INTEGRAL. Furthermore, the extremely wide field of view of the GBM opens a large fraction of the Milky Way dark matter halo to be probed. We start with 1601 days worth of GBM data, implement stringent data cuts, and perform two simple line search analyses on the reduced data: in the first, the line flux is limited without background modeling, and in the second, the background is modeled as a power-law. We find no significant excess lines in both our searches. We set new limits on sterile neutrino mixing angles, improving on previous limits by approximately an order of magnitude. The first detection of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos by IceCube provides new opportunities for tests of neutrino properties. The long baseline through the Cosmic Neutrino Background (C$\nu$B) is particularly useful for directly testing secret neutrino interactions ($\nu$SI) that would cause neutrino-neutrino elastic scattering at a larger rate than the usual weak interactions. We show that IceCube can provide competitive sensitivity to $\nu$SI compared to other astrophysical and cosmological probes, which are complementary to laboratory tests. We study the spectral distortions caused by $\nu$SI with a large s-channel contribution, which can lead to a dip, bump, or cutoff on an initially smooth spectrum. Consequently, $\nu$SI may be an exotic solution for features seen in the IceCube energy spectrum. More conservatively, IceCube neutrino data could be used to set model-independent limits on $\nu$SI. The extragalactic dark matter (DM) annihilation signal depends on the product of the clumping factor, <\delta^2>, and the velocity-weighted annihilation cross section, \sigma v. This "clumping factor-\sigma v" degeneracy can be broken by comparing DM annihilation signals from multiple sources. In particular, one can constrain the minimum DM halo mass, M_min, which depends on the mass of the DM particles and the kinetic decoupling temperature, by comparing observations of individual DM sources to the diffuse DM annihilation signal. We demonstrate this with careful semi-analytic treatments of the DM contribution to the diffuse Isotropic Gamma-Ray Background (IGRB), and compare it with two recent hints of DM from the Galactic Center, namely, ~130 GeV DM annihilating dominantly in the \chi\chi\ to \gamma\gamma\ channel, and (10-30) GeV DM annihilating in the \chi\chi\ to b\bar{b} or \chi\chi\ to \tau^{+}\tau^{-} channels. We show that, even in the most conservative analysis, the Fermi IGRB measurement already provides interesting sensitivity. A more detailed analysis of the IGRB, with new Fermi IGRB measurements and modeling of astrophysical backgrounds, may be able to probe values of M_min up to 1 M_sun for the 130 GeV candidate and 10^{-6} M_sun for the light DM candidates.
