Search

Weak momentum dissipation in ultra-clean metals gives rise to novel non-Ohmic current flow, including ballistic and hydrodynamic regimes. Recently, hydrodynamic flow has attracted intense interest because it presents a valuable window into the electronic correlations and the longest lived collective modes of quantum materials. However, diagnosing viscous flow is difficult as the macroscopic observables of ballistic and hydrodynamic transport such as the average current distribution can be deceptively similar, even if their respective microscopics deviate notably. Based on kinetic Boltzmann theory, here we propose to address this issue via the transverse channel voltage at zero magnetic field, which can efficiently detect hydrodynamic flow in a number of materials. To this end, we show that the transverse voltage is sensitive to the interplay between anisotropic fermiology and boundary scattering, resulting in a non-trivial behavior in narrow channels along crystalline low-symmetry directions. We discuss several materials where the channel-size dependent stress of the quantum fluid leads to a characteristic sign change of the transverse voltage as a new hallmark of the cross-over from the ballistic to the hydrodynamic regime.

Chirality is a pervasive form of symmetry that is intimately connected to the physical properties of solids, as well as the chemical and biological activity of molecular systems. However, its control with light is challenging, because inducing chirality in a non-chiral material requires that all mirrors and all roto-inversions be simultaneously broken. Electromagnetic fields exert only oscillatory forces that vanish on average, mostly leading to entropy increase that does not break symmetries, per se. Here, we show that chirality of either handedness can be generated in the non-chiral piezoelectric material BPO$_4$, in which two compensated sub-structures of opposite handedness coexist within the same unit cell. By resonantly driving either one of two orthogonal, doubly degenerate vibrational modes at Terahertz frequency, we rectify the lattice distortion and exert a displacive force onto the crystal. The staggered chirality is in this way uncompensated in either direction, inducing chiral structure with either handedness. The rotary power of the photo-induced phases is comparable to the static value of prototypical chiral alpha-quartz, limited by the strength of the pump laser pulse., Comment: 27 pages, including Supplementary Materials

The charge-density wave (CDW) mechanism and resulting structure of the AV3Sb5 family of kagome metals has posed a puzzling challenge since their discovery four years ago. In fact, the lack of consensus on the origin and structure of the CDW hinders the understanding of the emerging phenomena. Here, by employing a non-perturbative treatment of anharmonicity from first-principles calculations, we reveal that the charge-density transition in CsV3Sb5 is driven by the large electron-phonon coupling of the material and that the melting of the CDW state is attributed to ionic entropy and lattice anharmonicity. The calculated transition temperature is in very good agreement with experiments, implying that soft mode physics are at the core of the charge-density wave transition. Contrary to the standard assumption associated with a pure kagome lattice, the CDW is essentially three-dimensional as it is triggered by an unstable phonon at the L point. The absence of involvement of phonons at the M point enables us to constrain the resulting symmetries to six possible space groups. The unusually large electron-phonon linewidth of the soft mode explains why inelastic scattering experiments did not observe any softened phonon. Our understanding of quantum materials is commonly based on precise determinations of their electronic spectrum by spectroscopic means, most notably angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Both require atomically clean and flat crystal surfaces which traditionally are prepared by in-situ mechanical cleaving in ultrahigh vacuum chambers. We present a new approach that addresses three main issues of the current state-of-the-art methods: 1) Cleaving is a highly stochastic and thus inefficient process; 2) Fracture processes are governed by the bonds in a bulk crystal, and many materials and surfaces simply do not cleave; 3) The location of the cleave is random, preventing data collection at specified regions of interest. Our new workflow is based on Focused Ion Beam (FIB) machining of micro-stress lenses in which shape (rather than crystalline) anisotropy dictates the plane of cleavage, which can be placed at a specific target layer. As proof-of-principle we show ARPES results from micro-cleaves of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ along the ac plane and from two surface orientations of SrTiO$_3$, a notoriously difficult to cleave cubic perovskite.

Diode effects are of great interest for both fundamental physics and modern technologies. Electrical diode effects (nonreciprocal transport) have been observed in Weyl systems. Optical diode effects arising from the Weyl fermions have been theoretically considered but not probed experimentally. Here, we report the observation of a nonlinear optical diode effect (NODE) in the magnetic Weyl semimetal CeAlSi, where the magnetization introduces a pronounced directionality in the nonlinear optical second-harmonic generation (SHG). We show demonstrate a six-fold change of the measured SHG intensity between opposite propagation directions over a bandwidth exceeding 250 meV. Supported by density-functional theory, we establish the linearly dispersive bands emerging from Weyl nodes as the origin of this broadband effect. We further demonstrate current-induced magnetization switching and thus electrical control of the NODE. Despite much experimental and theoretical work, the nature of the charge order in the kagome metals belonging to the family of materials AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A=Cs,Rb,K) remains controversial. A crucial ingredient for the identification of the ordering in these materials is their response to external perturbations, such as strain or magnetic fields. To this end, we provide a comprehensive symmetry classification of the possible charge orders in kagome materials with a $2\times2$ increase of the unit cell. Motivated by the experimental reports of time-reversal-symmetry breaking and rotational anisotropy, we consider the interdependence of flux and bond orders. Deriving the relevant Landau free energy for possible orders, we study the effect of symmetry-breaking perturbations such as strain and magnetic fields. The kagome metals AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A=K,Rb,Cs) present an ideal sandbox to study the interrelation between multiple coexisting correlated phases such as charge order and superconductivity. So far, no consensus on the microscopic nature of these states has been reached as the proposals struggle to explain all their exotic physical properties. Among these, field-switchable electric magneto-chiral anisotropy (eMChA) in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ provides intriguing evidence for a rewindable electronic chirality, yet the other family members have not been likewise investigated. Here, we present a comparative study of magneto-chiral transport between CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ and KV$_3$Sb$_5$. Despite their similar electronic structure, KV$_3$Sb$_5$ displays negligible eMChA, if any, and with no field switchability. This is in stark contrast to the non-saturating eMChA in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ even in high fields up to 35 T. In light of their similar band structures, the stark difference in eMChA suggests its origin in the correlated states. Clearly, the V kagome nets alone are not sufficient to describe the physics and the interactions with their environment are crucial in determining the nature of their low-temperature state.

We report on the high-pressure growth, structural characterization, and investigation of the electronic properties of single-crystalline LaFeAsO co-substituted by Sm and P, in both its normal- and superconducting states. Here, the appearance of superconductivity is attributed to the inner chemical pressure induced by the smaller-size isovalent substituents. X-ray structural refinements show that the partial substitution of La by Sm and As by P in the parent LaFeAsO compound leads to a contraction in both the conducting Fe2(As,P)2 layers and the interlayer spacing. The main parameters of the superconducting state, including the critical temperature, the lower- and upper critical fields, as well as the coherence length, the penetration depth, and their anisotropy, were determined from magnetometry measurements on a single-crystalline La0.87Sm0.13FeAs0.91P0.09O sample. The critical current density (jc), as resulting from loops of magnetization hysteresis in the self-generated magnetic field, is 2 x 106 A/cm2 at 2 K. Overall, our findings illustrate a rare and interesting case of how superconductivity can be induced by co-substitution in the 1111 family. Such approach delineates new possibilities in the creation of superconductors by design, thus stimulating the exploration of related systems under multi-chemical pressure conditions.

Spontaneously broken symmetries are at the heart of many phenomena of quantum matter and physics more generally. However, determining the exact symmetries broken can be challenging due to imperfections such as strain, in particular when multiple electronic orders form complex interactions. This is exemplified by charge order in some kagome systems, which are speculated to show nematicity and flux order from orbital currents. We fabricated highly symmetric samples of a member of this family, CsV$_3$Sb$_5$, and measured their transport properties. We find the absence of measurable anisotropy at any temperature in the unperturbed material, however, a striking in-plane transport anisotropy appears when either weak magnetic fields or strains are present. A symmetry analysis indicates that a perpendicular magnetic field can indeed lead to in-plane anisotropy by inducing a flux order coexisting with more conventional bond order. Our results provide a unifying picture for the controversial charge order in kagome metals and highlight the need for microscopic materials control in the identification of broken symmetries.

First and foremost, we note that the aim of our paper is to report a methodology to diagnose topological (semi)metals using magnetic quantum oscillations. Thus far, such diagnosis has been based on the phase offset of quantum oscillations, which is extracted from a "Landau fan plot". A thorough analysis of the Onsager-Lifshitz-Roth quantization rules has shown that the famous $\pi$-phase shift can equally well arise from orbital- or spin magnetic moments in topologically trivial systems with strong spin-orbit coupling or small effective masses. Therefore, the "Landau fan plot" does not by itself constitute a proof of a topologically nontrivial Fermi surface. In the paper at hand, we report an improved analysis method that exploits the strong energy-dependence of the effective mass in linearly dispersing bands. This leads to a characteristic temperature dependence of the oscillation frequency which is a strong indicator of nontrivial topology, even for multi-band metals with complex Fermi surfaces. Three materials, Cd$_3$As$_2$, Bi$_2$O$_2$Se and LaRhIn$_5$ served as test cases for this method. In materials, certain approximated symmetry operations can exist in a lower-order approximation of the effective model but are good enough to influence the physical responses of the system, and these approximated symmetries were recently dubbed "quasi-symmetries" \cite{guo_arxiv_2021}. In this work, we reveal a hierarchy structure of the quasi-symmetries and the corresponding nodal structures that they enforce via two different approaches of the perturbation expansions for the effective model in the chiral crystal material CoSi. In the first approach, we treat the spin-independent linear momentum (k) term as the zero-order Hamiltonian. Its energy bands are four-fold degenerate due to an SU(2)$\times$SU(2) quasi-symmetry. We next consider both the k-independent spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and full quadratic-k terms as the perturbation terms and find that the first-order perturbation leads to a model described by a self-commuting "stabilizer code" Hamiltonian with a U(1) quasi-symmetry that can protect nodal planes. In the second approach, we treat the SOC-free linear-k term and k-independent SOC term as the zero-order. They exhibit an SU(2) quasi-symmetry, which can be reduced to U(1) quasi-symmetry by a choice of quadratic terms. Correspondingly, a two-fold degeneracy for all the bands due to the SU(2) quasi-symmetry is reduced to two-fold nodal planes that are protected by the U(1) quasi-symmetry. For both approaches, including higher-order perturbation will break the U(1) quasi-symmetry and induce a small gap $\sim$ 1 meV for the nodal planes. When electric conductors differ from their mirror image, unusual chiral transport coefficients appear that are forbidden in achiral metals, such as a non-linear electric response known as electronic magneto-chiral anisotropy (eMChA). While chiral transport signatures are by symmetry allowed in many conductors without a center of inversion, it reaches appreciable levels only in rare cases when an exceptionally strong chiral coupling to the itinerant electrons is present. So far, observations of chiral transport have been limited to materials in which the atomic positions strongly break mirror symmetries. Here, we report chiral transport in the centro-symmetric layered Kagome metal CsV$_3$Sb$_5$, observed via second harmonic generation under in-plane magnetic field. The eMChA signal becomes significant only at temperatures below $T'\sim$ 35 K, deep within the charge-ordered state of CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ ($T_{\mathrm{CDW}}\sim$ 94 K). This temperature dependence reveals a direct correspondence between electronic chirality, unidirectional charge order, and spontaneous time-reversal-symmetry breaking due to putative orbital loop currents. We show that the chirality is set by the out-of-plane field component and that a transition from left- to right-handed transport can be induced by changing the field sign. CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ is the first material in which strong chiral transport can be controlled and switched by small magnetic-field changes, in stark contrast to structurally chiral materials -- a prerequisite for their applications in chiral electronics.

The cascade of electronic phases in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ raises the prospect to disentangle their mutual interactions in a clean, strongly interacting Kagome lattice. When the Kagome planes are stacked into a crystal, its electronic dimensionality encodes how much of the Kagome physics and its topological aspects survive. The layered structure of CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ reflects in Brillouin-zone-sized quasi-2D Fermi surfaces and a significant transport anisotropy. Yet here we demonstrate that CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ is a three-dimensional metal within the charge-density-wave (CDW) state. Small 3D pockets play a crucial role in its low-temperature magneto- and quantum transport. Their emergence at $T_{CDW}\sim 93$ K results in an anomalous sudden increase of the in-plane magnetoresistance by 4 orders of magnitude. The presence of these 3D pockets is further confirmed by quantum oscillations under in-plane magnetic fields - demonstrating their closed nature. These results emphasize the impact of interlayer coupling on the Kagome physics in 3D materials.

Superconductor/metal interfaces are usually fabricated in heterostructures that join these dissimilar materials. A conceptually different approach has recently exploited the strain sensitivity of heavy-fermion superconductors, selectively transforming regions of the crystal into the metallic state by strain gradients. The strain is generated by differential thermal contraction between the sample and the substrate. Here, we present an improved finite-element model that reliably predicts the superconducting transition temperature in CeIrIn$_5$ even in complex structures. Different substrates are employed to tailor the strain field into the desired shapes. Using this approach, both highly complex and strained as well as strain-free microstructures are fabricated to validate the model. This enables full control over the microscopic strain fields, and forms the basis for more advanced structuring of superconductors as in Josephson junctions., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Functional materials can offer new paradigms for miniaturized and energy-efficient electronics, providing a complementary or even alternative platform to metal-oxide-semiconductors. Here we report on electronically accessible long-lived structural states in Vanadium Dioxide that can offer a scheme for data storage and processing. We show that such states can be electrically manipulated and tracked beyond 10,000 seconds after excitation, exhibiting similar features of glasses, which are beyond the classic metastability in Mott systems. Glass-like electronics can potentially overcome some of the fundamental limitations in conventional metal-oxide-semiconductor electronics, and open avenues for neuromorphic computation and multi-level memories.

Skyrmionic materials hold the potential for future information technologies, such as racetrack memories. Key to that advancement are systems that exhibit high tunability and scalability, with stored information being easy to read and write by means of all-electrical techniques. Topological magnetic excitations such as skyrmions and antiskyrmions, give rise to a characteristic topological Hall effect. However, the electrical detection of antiskyrmions, in both thin films and bulk samples has been challenging to date. Here, we apply magneto-optical microscopy combined with electrical transport to explore the antiskyrmion phase as it emerges in crystalline mesoscale structures of the Heusler magnet Mn$_{1.4}$PtSn. We reveal the Hall signature of antiskyrmions in line with our theoretical model, comprising anomalous and topological components. We examine its dependence on the vertical device thickness, field orientation, and temperature. Our atomistic simulations and experimental anisotropy studies demonstrate the link between antiskyrmions and a complex magnetism that consists of competing ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, and chiral exchange interactions, not captured by micromagnetic simulations., Comment: 30 pages, 4 figures, Supplementary Information with additional 22 pages and 16 figures

In this work, we combine two previously-incompatible techniques for defining electronic devices: shaping three-dimensional crystals by focused ion beam (FIB), and two-dimensional electrostatic accumulation of charge carriers. The principal challenge for this integration is nanometer-scale surface damage inherent to any FIB-based fabrication. We address this by using a sacrificial protective layer to preserve a selected pristine surface. The test case presented here is accumulation of 2D carriers by ionic liquid gating at the surface of a micron-scale SrTiO$_3$ lamella. Preservation of surface quality is reflected in superconductivity of the accumulated carriers. This technique opens new avenues for realizing electrostatic charge tuning in materials that are not available as large or exfoliatable single crystals, and for patterning the geometry of the accumulated carriers.

Intense work studying the ballistic regime of electron transport in two dimensional systems based on semiconductors and graphene had been thought to have established most of the key experimental facts of the field. In recent years, however, new forms of ballistic transport have become accessible in the quasi-two-dimensional delafossite metals, whose Fermi wavelength is a factor of 100 shorter than those typically studied in the previous work, and whose Fermi surfaces are nearly hexagonal in shape, and therefore strongly faceted. This has some profound consequences for results obtained from the classic ballistic transport experiment of studying bend and Hall resistances in mesoscopic squares fabricated from delafossite single crystals. We observe pronounced anisotropies in bend resistances and even a Hall voltage that is strongly asymmetric in magnetic field. Although some of our observations are non-intuitive at first sight, we show that they can be understood within a non-local Landauer-B\"uttiker analysis tailored to the symmetries of the square/hexagonal geometries of our combined device/Fermi surface system. Signatures of non-local transport can be resolved for squares of linear dimension of nearly 100 $\mu$m, approximately a factor of 15 larger than the bulk mean free path of the crystal from which the device was fabricated., Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures (including supplementary information)

The crystal symmetry of a material dictates the type of topological band structures it may host, and therefore symmetry is the guiding principle to find topological materials. Here we introduce an alternative guiding principle, which we call 'quasi-symmetry'. This is the situation where a Hamiltonian has an exact symmetry at lower-order that is broken by higher-order perturbation terms. This enforces finite but parametrically small gaps at some low-symmetry points in momentum space. Untethered from the restraints of symmetry, quasi-symmetries eliminate the need for fine-tuning as they enforce that sources of large Berry curvature will occur at arbitrary chemical potentials. We demonstrate that a quasi-symmetry in the semi-metal CoSi stabilizes gaps below 2 meV over a large near-degenerate plane that can be measured in the quantum oscillation spectrum. The application of in-plane strain breaks the crystal symmetry and gaps the degenerate point, observable by new magnetic breakdown orbits. The quasi-symmetry, however, does not depend on spatial symmetries and hence transmission remains fully coherent. These results demonstrate a class of topological materials with increased resilience to perturbations such as strain-induced crystalline symmetry breaking, which may lead to robust topological applications as well as unexpected topology beyond the usual space group classifications., Comment: Nat. The quest to improve transparent conductors balances two key goals: increasing electrical conductivity and increasing optical transparency. To improve both simultaneously is hindered by the physical limitation that good metals with high electrical conductivity have large carrier densities that push the plasma edge into the ultra-violet range. Transparent conductors are compromises between electrical conductivity, requiring mobile electrons, and optical transparency based on immobile charges to avoid screening of visible light. Technological solutions reflect this trade-off, achieving the desired transparencies by reducing the conductor thickness or carrier density at the expense of a lower conductance. Here we demonstrate that highly anisotropic crystalline conductors offer an alternative solution, avoiding this compromise by separating the directions of conduction and transmission. Materials with a quasi-two-dimensional electronic structure have a plasma edge well below the range of visible light while maintaining excellent in-plane conductivity. We demonstrate that slabs of the layered oxides Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ and Tl$_2$Ba$_2$CuO$_{6+\delta}$ are optically transparent even at macroscopic thicknesses >2$\mu$m for c-axis polarized light. Underlying this observation is the fabrication of out-of-plane slabs by focused ion beam milling. This work provides a glimpse into future technologies, such as highly polarized and addressable optical screens, that advancements in a-axis thin film growth will enable.

A wide range of unconventional transport phenomena have recently been observed in single-crystal delafossite metals. Here, we present a theoretical framework to elucidate electron transport using a combination of first-principles calculations and numerical modeling of the anisotropic Boltzmann transport equation. Using PdCoO$_2$ as a model system, we study different microscopic electron and phonon scattering mechanisms and establish the mean free path hierarchy of quasiparticles at different temperatures. We treat the anisotropic Fermi surface explicitly to numerically obtain experimentally-accessible transport observables, which bridge between the "diffusive", "ballistic", and "hydrodynamic" transport regime limits. We illustrate that distinction between the "quasi-ballistic", and "quasi-hydrodynamic" regimes is challenging and often needs to be quantitative in nature. From first-principles calculations, we populate the resulting transport regime plots, and demonstrate how the Fermi surface orientation adds complexity to the observed transport signatures in micro-scale devices. Our work provides key insights into microscopic interaction mechanisms on open hexagonal Fermi surfaces and establishes their connection to the macroscopic electron transport in finite-size channels.

Whereas electron-phonon scattering typically relaxes the electron's momentum in metals, a perpetual exchange of momentum between phonons and electrons conserves total momentum and can lead to a coupled electron-phonon liquid with unique transport properties. This theoretical idea was proposed decades ago and has been revisited recently, but the experimental signatures of an electron-phonon liquid have been rarely reported. We present evidence of such a behavior in a transition metal ditetrelide, NbGe$_2$, from three different experiments. First, quantum oscillations reveal an enhanced quasiparticle mass, which is unexpected in NbGe$_2$ due to weak electron-electron correlations, hence pointing at electron-phonon interactions. Second, resistivity measurements exhibit a discrepancy between the experimental data and calculated curves within a standard Fermi liquid theory. Third, Raman scattering shows anomalous temperature dependence of the phonon linewidths which fits an empirical model based on phonon-electron coupling. We discuss structural factors, such as chiral symmetry, short metallic bonds, and a low-symmetry coordination environment as potential sources of coupled electron-phonon liquids., Comment: Preprint, 18 pages, 4 figures

In an idealized infinite crystal, the material properties are constrained by the symmetries of its unit cell. Naturally, the point-group symmetry is broken by the sample shape of any finite crystal, yet this is commonly unobservable in macroscopic metals. To sense the shape-induced symmetry lowering in such metals, long-lived bulk states originating from anisotropic Fermi surfaces are needed. Here we show how strongly facetted Fermi surfaces and long quasiparticle mean free paths present in microstructures of PdCoO2 yield an in-plane resistivity anisotropy that is forbidden by symmetry on an infinite hexagonal lattice. Bar shaped transport devices narrower than the mean free path are carved from single crystals using focused ion beam (FIB) milling, such that the ballistic charge carriers at low temperatures frequently collide with both sidewalls defining a channel. Two symmetry-forbidden transport signatures appear: the in-plane resistivity anisotropy exceeds a factor of 2, and transverse voltages appear in zero magnetic field. We robustly identify the channel direction as the source of symmetry breaking via ballistic Monte- Carlo simulations and numerical solution of the Boltzmann equation.

We report a scanning superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) microscope in a cryogen-free dilution refrigerator with a base temperature at the sample stage of at least 30 mK. The microscope is rigidly mounted to the mixing chamber plate to optimize thermal anchoring of the sample. The microscope housing fits into the bore of a superconducting vector magnet, and our design accommodates a large number of wires connecting the sample and sensor. Through a combination of vibration isolation in the cryostat and a rigid microscope housing, we achieve relative vibrations between the SQUID and sample that allow us to image with micrometer resolution over a 150 $\mu$m range while the sample stage temperature remains at base temperature. To demonstrate the capabilities of our system, we show images acquired simultaneously of the static magnetic field, magnetic susceptibility, and magnetic fields produced by a current above a superconducting micrometer-scale device.

As conductors in electronic applications shrink, microscopic conduction processes lead to strong deviations from Ohm's law. Depending on the length scales of momentum conserving ($l_{MC}$) and relaxing ($l_{MR}$) electron scattering, and the device size ($d$), current flows may shift from ohmic to ballistic to hydrodynamic regimes and more exotic mixtures thereof. So far, an in situ, in-operando methodology to obtain these parameters self-consistently within a micro/nanodevice, and thereby identify its conduction regime, is critically lacking. In this context, we exploit Sondheimer oscillations, semi-classical magnetoresistance oscillations due to helical electronic motion, as a method to obtain $l_{MR}$ in micro-devices even when $l_{MR}\gg d$. This gives information on the bulk $l_{MR}$ complementary to quantum oscillations, which are sensitive to all scattering processes. We extract $l_{MR}$ from the Sondheimer amplitude in the topological semi-metal WP$_2$, at elevated temperatures up to $T\sim 50$~K, in a range most relevant for hydrodynamic transport phenomena. Our data on micrometer-sized devices are in excellent agreement with experimental reports of the large bulk $l_{MR}$ and thus confirm that WP$_2$ can be microfabricated without degradation. Indeed, the measured scattering rates match well with those of theoretically predicted electron-phonon scattering, thus supporting the notion of strong momentum exchange between electrons and phonons in WP$_2$ at these temperatures. These results conclusively establish Sondheimer oscillations as a quantitative probe of $l_{MR}$ in micro-devices in studying non-ohmic electron flow., Comment: 14 pages with 4 figures

Structural phase transitions in $f$-electron materials have attracted sustained attention both for practical and basic science reasons, including that they offer an environment to directly investigate relationships between structure and the $f$-state. Here we present results for UCr$_2$Si$_2$, where structural (tetragonal $\rightarrow$ monoclinic) and antiferromagnetic phase transitions are seen at $T_{\rm{S}}$ $=$ 205 K and $T_{\rm{N}}$ $=$ 25 K, respectively. We also provide evidence for an additional second order phase transition at $T_{\rm{X}}$ = 280 K. We show that $T_{\rm{X}}$, $T_{\rm{S}}$, and $T_{\rm{N}}$ respond in distinct ways to the application of hydrostatic pressure and Cr $\rightarrow$ Ru chemical substitution. In particular, hydrostatic compression increases the structural ordering temperature, eventually causes it to merge with $T_{\rm{X}}$ and destroys the antiferromagnetism. In contrast, chemical substitution in the series UCr$_{2-x}$Ru$_x$Si$_2$ suppresses both $T_{\rm{S}}$ and $T_{\rm{N}}$, causing them to approach zero temperature near $x$ $\approx$ 0.16 and 0.08, respectively. The distinct $T-P$ and $T-x$ phase diagrams are related to the evolution of the rigid Cr-Si and Si-Si substructures, where applied pressure semi-uniformly compresses the unit cell and Cr $\rightarrow$ Ru substitution results in uniaxial lattice compression along the tetragonal $c$-axis and an expansion in the $ab$-plane. In RuCl$_3$, inelastic neutron scattering and Raman spectroscopy reveal a continuum of non-spin-wave excitations that persists to high temperature, suggesting the presence of a spin liquid state on a honeycomb lattice. In the context of the Kitaev model, magnetic fields introduce finite interactions between the elementary excitations, and thus the effects of high magnetic fields - comparable to the spin exchange energy scale - must be explored. Here we report measurements of the magnetotropic coefficient - the second derivative of the free energy with respect to magnetic field orientation - over a wide range of magnetic fields and temperatures. We find that magnetic field and temperature compete to determine the magnetic response in a way that is independent of the large intrinsic exchange interaction energy. While electrons moving perpendicular to a magnetic field are confined to cyclotron orbits, they can move freely parallel to the field. This simple fact leads to complex current flow in clean, low carrier density semi-metals, such as long-ranged current jets forming along the magnetic field when currents pass through point-like constrictions. Occurring accidentally at imperfect current injection contacts, the phenomenon of "current jetting" plagues the research of longitudinal magneto-resistance which is particularly important in topological conductors. Here we demonstrate the controlled generation of tightly focused electron beams in a new class of micro-devices machined from crystals of the Dirac semi-metal Cd3As2. The current beams can be guided by tilting a magnetic field and their range tuned by the field strength. Finite element simulations quantitatively capture the voltage induced at faraway contacts when the beams are steered towards them, supporting the picture of controlled electron jets. These experiments demonstrate the first direct control over the highly nonlocal signal propagation unique to 3D semi-metals in the current jetting regime, and may lead to novel applications akin to electron optics in free space., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures

Zirconium pentatetelluride, ZrTe5, shows remarkable sensitivity to hydrostatic pressure. In this work we address the high-pressure transport and optical properties of this compound, on samples grown by flux and charge vapor transport. The high-pressure resistivity is measured up to 2 GPa, and the infrared transmission up to 9 GPa. The dc conductivity anisotropy is determined using a microstructured sample. Together, the transport and optical measurements allow us to discern band parameters with and without the hydrostatic pressure, in particular the Fermi level, and the effective mass in the less conducting, out-of-plane direction. The results are interpreted within a simple two-band model characterized by a Dirac-like, linear in-plane band dispersion, and a parabolic out-of-plane dispersion.

Weyl semimetals such as the TaAs family (TaAs, TaP, NbAs, NbP) host quasiparticle excitations resembling the long sought after Weyl fermions at special band-crossing points in the band structure denoted as Weyl nodes. They are predicted to exhibit a negative longitudinal magnetoresistance (LMR) due to the chiral anomaly if the Fermi energy is sufficiently close to the Weyl points. However, current jetting effects, i.e. current inhomogeneities caused by a strong, field-induced conductivity anisotropy in semimetals, have a similar experimental signature and therefore have hindered a determination of the intrinsic LMR in the TaAs family so far. This work investigates the longitudinal magnetoresistance of all four members of this family along the crystallographic $a$ and $c$ direction. Our samples are of similar quality as those previously studied in the literature and have a similar chemical potential as indicated by matching quantum oscillation (QO) frequencies. Care was taken to ensure homogeneous currents in all measurements. As opposed to previous studies where this was not done, we find a positive LMR that saturates in fields above 4 T in TaP, NbP and NbAs for $B||c$. Using Fermi-surface geometries from band structure calculations that had been confirmed by experiment, we show that this is the behaviour expected from a classical purely orbital effect, independent on the distance of the Weyl node to the Fermi energy. The TaAs family of compounds is the first to show such a simple LMR without apparent influences of scattering anisotropy. In configurations where the orbital effect is small, i.e. for $B||a$ in NbAs and NbP, we find a non-monotonous LMR including regions of negative LMR. We discuss a weak antilocalisation scenario as an alternative interpretation than the chiral anomaly for these results, since it can fully account for the overall field dependence.

The phase offset of quantum oscillations is commonly used to experimentally diagnose topologically non-trivial Fermi surfaces. This methodology, however, is inconclusive for spin-orbit-coupled metals where $\pi$-phase-shifts can also arise from non-topological origins. Here, we show that the linear dispersion in topological metals leads to a $T^2$-temperature correction to the oscillation frequency that is absent for parabolic dispersions. We confirm this effect experimentally in the Dirac semi-metal Cd$_3$As$_2$ and the multiband Dirac metal LaRhIn$_5$. Both materials match a tuning-parameter-free theoretical prediction, emphasizing their unified origin. For topologically trivial Bi$_2$O$_2$Se, no frequency shift associated to linear bands is observed as expected. However, the $\pi$-phase shift in Bi$_2$O$_2$Se would lead to a false positive in a Landau-fan plot analysis. Our frequency-focused methodology does not require any input from ab-initio calculations, and hence is promising for identifying correlated topological materials.

Layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are commonly classified as quasi-two-dimensional materials, meaning that their electronic structure closely resembles that of an individual layer, which results in resistivity anisotropies reaching thousands. Here, we show that this rule does not hold for 1T-TaS2 - a compound with the richest phase diagram among TMDs. While the onset of charge density wave order makes the in-plane conduction non-metallic, we reveal that the out-of-plane charge transport is metallic and the resistivity anisotropy is close to one. We support our findings with ab-initio calculations predicting a pronounced quasi-one-dimensional character of the electronic structure. Consequently, we interpret the highly debated metal-insulator transition in 1T-TaS2 as a quasi-one-dimensional instability, contrary to the long-standing Mott localisation picture. In the Ca$_{1-x}$La$_x$FeAs$_2$ (112) family of pnictide superconductors, we have investigated a highly overdoped composition (x = 0.56), prepared by high-pressure, high-temperature synthesis. Magnetic measurements show an antiferromagnetic transition at TN = 120K, well above the one at lower doping (0.15 < x < 0.27). Below the onset of long-range magnetic order at TN, the electrical resistivity is strongly reduced and is dominated by electron-electron interactions, as evident from its temperature dependence. The Seebeck coefficient shows a clear metallic behavior as in narrow band conductors. The temperature dependence of the Hall coefficient and the violation of Kohler's rule agree with the multiband character of the material. No superconductivity was observed down to 1.8 K. The success of the high-pressure synthesis encourages further investigations of the so far only partially explored phase diagram in this family of Iron-based high temperature superconductors.

Transport of electrons in a bulk metal is usually well captured by their particle-like aspects, while their wave-like nature is commonly harder to observe. Microstructures can be are fully designed to reveal the quantum phase, for example mesoscopic metal rings resembling interferometers. Here we report a new type of phase coherent oscillation of the out-of-plane magnetoresistance in the layered delafossites PdCoO$_2$ and PtCoO$_2$. The oscillation period is equivalent to that determined by the magnetic flux quantum, $h/e$, threading an area defined by the atomic interlayer separation and the sample width. The phase of the electron wave function in these crystals appears remarkably robust over macroscopic length scales exceeding 10$\mu$m and persisting up to elevated temperatures of $T$>50K. We show that, while the experimental signal cannot be explained in a standard Aharonov-Bohm analysis, it arises due to periodic field-modulation of the out-of-plane hopping. These results demonstrate extraordinary single-particle quantum coherence lengths in the delafossites, and identify a new form of quantum interference in solids.

Geometric electron optics may be implemented in solid state when transport is ballistic on the length scale of a device. Currently, this is realized mainly in 2D materials characterized by circular Fermi surfaces. Here we demonstrate that the nearly perfectly hexagonal Fermi surface of PdCoO2 gives rise to highly directional ballistic transport. We probe this directional ballistic regime in a single crystal of PdCoO2 by use of focused ion beam (FIB) micro-machining, defining crystalline ballistic circuits with features as small as 250nm. The peculiar hexagonal Fermi surface naturally leads to electron self-focusing effects in a magnetic field, well below the geometric limit associated with a circular Fermi surface. This super-geometric focusing can be quantitatively predicted for arbitrary device geometry, based on the hexagonal cyclotron orbits appearing in this material. These results suggest a novel class of ballistic electronic devices exploiting the unique transport characteristics of strongly faceted Fermi surfaces.

CeRhIn$_5$ provides a textbook example of quantum criticality in a heavy fermion system: Pressure suppresses local-moment antiferromagnetic (AFM) order and induces superconductivity in a dome around the associated quantum critical point (QCP) near $p_{c} \approx 23\,$kbar. Strong magnetic fields also suppress the AFM order at a field-induced QCP at $B_{\rm c}\approx 50\,$T. In its vicinity, a nematic phase at $B^*\approx 28\,$T characterized by a large in-plane resistivity anisotropy emerges. Here, we directly investigate the interrelation between these phenomena via magnetoresistivity measurements under high pressure. As pressure increases, the nematic transition shifts to higher fields, until it vanishes just below $p_{\rm c}$. While pressure suppresses magnetic order in zero field as $p_{\rm c}$ is approached, we find magnetism to strengthen under strong magnetic fields due to suppression of the Kondo effect. The Ce(Co,Rh,Ir)In$_5$ family of ``Ce-115'' materials hosts an abundance of correlated electron behavior, including heavy-fermion physics, magnetism, superconductivity and nematicity. The complicated behavior of these entangled phenomena leads to a variety of exotic physical properties, which, despite the seemingly simple crystal structure of these compounds, remain poorly understood. It is generally accepted that the interplay between the itinerant and local character of Ce-$4f$ electrons is the key to their exotic behavior. Here, we report theoretical evidence that the Ce-115 materials are also topological semi-metals, with Dirac fermions around well-separated nodes. Dirac nodes in each compound are present on the $\Gamma-Z$ plane close to the Fermi level. As the Dirac bands are derived from In-orbitals, they occur in all family members irrespective of the transition metal (Co,Rh,Ir). We present the expected Fermi-arc surface state patterns and show the close proximity of a topological Lifshitz transition, which possibly explains the high field physics of Ce-115 materials. Experimentally, we highlight the surprising similarity of Ce(Co,Rh,Ir)In$_5$ in high magnetic fields, despite the distinctly different states of the Ce-$4f$ electrons. These results raise questions about the role Dirac fermions play in exotic transport behavior, and we propose this class of materials as a prime candidate for unconventional topological superconductivity.

The ability to spatially modulate the electronic properties of solids has led to landmark discoveries in condensed matter physics as well as new electronic applications. Although crystals of strongly correlated metals exhibit a diverse set of electronic ground states, few approaches to spatially modulating their properties exist. Here we demonstrate spatial control over the superconducting state in mesoscale samples of the canonical heavy-fermion superconductor CeIrIn5. We use a focused ion beam (FIB) to pattern crystals on the microscale, which tailors the strain induced by differential thermal contraction into specific areas of the device. The resulting non-uniform strain fields induce complex patterns of superconductivity due to the strong dependence of the transition temperature on the strength and direction of strain. Electrical transport and magnetic imaging of devices with different geometry show that the obtained spatial modulation of superconductivity agrees with predictions based on finite element simulations. Quantum materials are epitomized by the influence of collective modes upon their macroscopic properties. Relatively few examples exist, however, whereby coherence of the ground-state wavefunction directly contributes to the conductivity. Notable examples include the quantizing effects of high magnetic fields upon the 2D electron gas, the collective sliding of charge density waves subject to high electric fields, and perhaps most notably the macroscopic phase coherence that enables superconductors to carry dissipationless currents. Here we reveal that the low temperature hidden order state of URu$_2$Si$_2$ exhibits just such a connection between the quantum and macroscopic worlds -- under large voltage bias we observe non-linear contributions to the conductivity that are directly analogous to the manifestation of phase slips in one-dimensional superconductors [1], suggesting a complex order parameter for hidden order, Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures, supplementary included

We have studied magneto transport in the single-band, quasi-two-dimensional metals PdCoO2 and PtCoO2, which have extremely long mean free paths. We observer a strong temperature dependence of the Hall resistivity in small applied, fields, linked to a large violation of Kohler's rule in the magnetoresistance. We discuss the extent to which these observations can be accounted for by standard transport theory, and describe other possible, unconventional contributions to magnetotransport in very high purity metals.

The Fermi surface topology of a Weyl semimetal (WSM) depends strongly on the position of the chemical potential. If it resides close to the band touching points (Weyl nodes), as it does in TaAs, separate Fermi surfaces of opposite chirality emerge, leading to novel phenomena such as the chiral magnetic effect. If the chemical potential lies too far from the nodes, however, the chiral Fermi surfaces merge into a single large Fermi surface with no net chirality. This is realized in the WSM NbP, where the Weyl nodes lie far below the Fermi energy and where the transport properties in low magnetic fields show no evidence of chiral Fermi surfaces. Here we show that the behavior of NbP in high magnetic fields is nonetheless dominated by the presence of the Weyl nodes. Torque magnetometry up to 60 tesla reveals a change in the slope of $\tau/B$ at the quantum limit B$^\star$ ($\approx 32\,\rm{T}$), where the chemical potential enters the $n=0$ Landau level. Numerical simulations show that this behaviour results from the magnetic field pulling the chemical potential to the chiral $n=0$ Landau level belonging to the Weyl nodes. These results show that high magnetic fields can uncover topological singularities in the underlying band structure of a potential WSM, and can recover topologically non-trivial experimental properties, even when the position of the chemical potential precludes their observation in zero magnetic field., Comment: 6 pages including 5 figures

Unusual behavior of quantum materials commonly arises from their effective low-dimensional physics, which reflects the underlying anisotropy in the spin and charge degrees of freedom. Torque magnetometry is a highly sensitive technique to directly quantify the anisotropy in quantum materials, such as the layered high-T$_c$ superconductors, anisotropic quantum spin-liquids, and the surface states of topological insulators. Here we introduce the magnetotropic coefficient $k=\partial^2 F/\partial \theta^2$, the second derivative of the free energy F with respect to the angle $\theta$ between the sample and the applied magnetic field, and report a simple and effective method to experimentally detect it. A sub-$\mu$g crystallite is placed at the tip of a commercially available atomic force microscopy cantilever, and we show that $k$ can be quantitatively inferred from a shift in the resonant frequency under magnetic field. While related to the magnetic torque $\tau=\partial F/\partial \theta$, $k$ takes the role of torque susceptibility, and thus provides distinct insights into anisotropic materials akin to the difference between magnetization and magnetic susceptibility. The thermodynamic coefficient $k$ is discontinuous at second-order phase transitions and subject to Ehrenfest relations with the specific heat and magnetic susceptibility. Broadband, efficient and fast conversion of light to electricity is crucial for sensing and clean energy. Here we reveal the largest observed bulk photo-voltaic effect (BPVE), an intrinsic mechanism predicted to be ultrafast and exceed the Shockley-Quiesser limit. This discovery results from combining recent developments in the connection of BPVE to topology, Weyl semimetals and focused-ion beam fabrication. Our room temperature observation of the first BPVE in the mid-IR, is enabled by microscopic devices of the Weyl semimetal TaAs. Detailed symmetry analysis enables unambiguous separation of this response from competing photo-thermal effects. The size and wavelength range of the shift current offers new opportunities in optical detectors, clean energy, and topology, while directly demonstrating the utility of Weyl semimetals for applications., Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures

We present the crystal structure, electronic structure, and transport properties of the material YbMnSb$_2$, a candidate system for the investigation of Dirac physics in the presence of magnetic order. Our measurements reveal that this system is a low-carrier-density semimetal with a 2D Fermi surface arising from a Dirac dispersion, consistent with the predictions of density functional theory calculations of the antiferromagnetic system. The low temperature resistivity is very large, suggesting scattering in this system is highly efficient at dissipating momentum despite its Dirac-like nature., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

We report growth of single crystals of the non-magnetic metallic delafossite PdRhO_{2}, comparing the results from three different methods. Complete crystallographic data were obtained from single crystal X-ray diffraction, and electronic structure calculations made using the refined structural parameters. Focused-ion beam microstructuring was used to prepare a sample for measurements of the in- and out-of-plane electrical resistivity, and the large observed anisotropy is qualitatively consistent with the cylindrical Fermi surface predicted by the calculations., Comment: 25 pages, 10 figures

Electronic nematics are exotic states of matter where electronic interactions break a rotational symmetry of the underlying lattice, in analogy to the directional alignment without translational order in nematic liquid crystals. Intriguingly such phases appear in the copper- and iron-based superconductors, and their role in establishing high-temperature superconductivity remains an open question. Nematicity may take an active part, cooperating or competing with superconductivity, or may appear accidentally in such systems. Here we present experimental evidence for a phase of nematic character in the heavy fermion superconductor CeRhIn5. We observe a field-induced breaking of the electronic tetragonal symmetry of in the vicinity of an antiferromagnetic (AFM) quantum phase transition at Hc~50T. This phase appears in out-of-plane fields of H*~28T and is characterized by substantial in-plane resistivity anisotropy. The anisotropy can be aligned by a small in-plane field component, with no apparent connection to the underlying crystal structure. Furthermore no anomalies are observed in the magnetic torque, suggesting the absence of metamagnetic transitions in this field range. These observations are indicative of an electronic nematic character of the high field state in CeRhIn5. The appearance of nematic behavior in a phenotypical heavy fermion superconductor highlights the interrelation of nematicity and unconventional superconductivity, suggesting nematicity to be a commonality in such materials.

Weyl fermions are a new ingredient for correlated states of electronic matter. A key difficulty has been that real materials also contain non-Weyl quasiparticles, and disentangling the experimental signatures has proven challenging. We use magnetic fields up to 95 tesla to drive the Weyl semimetal TaAs far into its quantum limit (QL), where only the purely chiral 0th Landau levels (LLs) of the Weyl fermions are occupied. We find the electrical resistivity to be nearly independent of magnetic field up to 50 tesla: unusual for conventional metals but consistent with the chiral anomaly for Weyl fermions. Above 50 tesla we observe a two-order-of-magnitude increase in resistivity, indicating that a gap opens in the chiral LLs. Above 80 tesla we observe strong ultrasonic attenuation below 2 kelvin, suggesting a mesoscopically-textured state of matter. These results point the way to inducing new correlated states of matter in the QL of Weyl semimetals.

By introducing a superconducting gap in Weyl- or Dirac semi-metals, the superconducting state inherits the non-trivial topology of their electronic structure. As a result, Weyl superconductors are expected to host exotic phenomena such as non-zero-momentum pairing due to their chiral node structure, or zero- energy Majorana modes at the surface. These are of fundamental interest to improve our understanding of correlated topological systems, and moreover practical applications in phase coherent devices and quantum applications have been proposed. Proximity-induced superconductivity promises to allow such experiments on non-superconducting Weyl semi-metals. Here we show a new route to reliably fabricating superconducting microstructures from the non-superconducting Weyl semi-metal NbAs under ion irradiation. The significant difference in the surface binding energy of Nb and As leads to a natural enrichment of Nb at the surface during ion milling, forming a superconducting surface layer (Tc~3.5K). Being formed from the target crystal itself, the ideal contact between the superconductor and the bulk may enable an effective gapping of the Weyl nodes in the bulk due to the proximity effect. Simple ion irradiation may thus serve as a powerful tool to fabricating topological quantum devices from mono-arsenides, even on an industrial scale., Comment: accepted by Science Advances

Understanding the role of electron correlations in strong spin-orbit transition-metal oxides is key to the realisation of numerous exotic phases including spin-orbit assisted Mott insulators, correlated topological solids, and prospective new high-temperature superconductors. To date, most attention has been focussed on the $5d$ iridium-based oxides. Here, we instead consider the Pt-based delafossite oxide PtCoO$_2$. Our transport measurements, performed on single-crystal samples etched to well-defined geometries using focussed ion-beam techniques, yield a room-temperature resistivity of only 2.1~$\mu\Omega$cm, establishing PtCoO$_2$ as the most conductive oxide known. From angle-resolved photoemission and density-functional theory, we show that the underlying Fermi surface is a single cylinder of nearly hexagonal cross-section, with very weak dispersion along k$_z$. Despite being predominantly composed of $d$-orbital character, the conduction band is remarkably steep, with an average effective mass of only 1.14$m_e$. Moreover, the sharp spectral features observed in photoemission remain well-defined with little additional broadening for over 500~meV below E$_F$, pointing to suppressed electron-electron scattering.
