Search

Strong gravitational lenses provide unique laboratories for cosmological and astrophysical investigations, but they must first be discovered - a task that can be met with significant contamination by other astrophysical objects and asterisms. Here we review strong lens searches, covering various sources (quasars, galaxies, supernovae, FRBs, GRBs, and GWs), lenses (early- and late-type galaxies, groups, and clusters), datasets (imaging, spectra, and lightcurves), and wavelengths. We first present the physical characteristics of the lens and source populations, highlighting relevant details for constructing targeted searches. Search techniques are described based on the main lensing feature that is required for the technique to work, namely one of: (i) an associated magnification, (ii) multiple spatially-resolved images, (iii) multiple redshifts, or (iv) a non-zero time delay between images. To use the current lens samples for science, and for the design of future searches, we list several selection biases that exist due to these discovery techniques. Binary supermassive black holes (BSBHs) are expected to be a generic byproduct from hierarchical galaxy formation. The final coalescence of BSBHs is thought to be the loudest gravitational wave (GW) siren, yet no confirmed BSBH is known in the GW-dominated regime. While periodic quasars have been proposed as BSBH candidates, the physical origin of the periodicity has been largely uncertain. Here we report discovery of a periodicity (P=1607$\pm$7 days) at 99.95% significance (with a global p-value of ~$10^{-3}$ accounting for the look elsewhere effect) in the optical light curves of a redshift 1.53 quasar, SDSS J025214.67-002813.7. Combining archival Sloan Digital Sky Survey data with new, sensitive imaging from the Dark Energy Survey, the total ~20-yr time baseline spans ~4.6 cycles of the observed 4.4-yr (restframe 1.7-yr) periodicity. The light curves are best fit by a bursty model predicted by hydrodynamic simulations of circumbinary accretion disks. The periodicity is likely caused by accretion rate modulation by a milli-parsec BSBH emitting GWs, dynamically coupled to the circumbinary accretion disk. A bursty hydrodynamic variability model is statistically preferred over a smooth, sinusoidal model expected from relativistic Doppler boost, a kinematic effect proposed for PG1302-102. Furthermore, the frequency dependence of the variability amplitudes disfavors Doppler boost, lending independent support to the circumbinary accretion variability hypothesis. Given our detection rate of one BSBH candidate from circumbinary accretion variability out of 625 quasars, it suggests that future large, sensitive synoptic surveys such as the Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time may be able to detect hundreds to thousands of candidate BSBHs from circumbinary accretion with direct implications for Laser Interferometer Space Antenna., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS, 17 pages, 9 figures

We present XMM-Newton X-ray observations and analysis of three DES $z>6.5$ quasars (VDES J0020$-$3653 at $z=6.824$, VDES J0244$-$5008 at $z=6.724$ and VDES J0224$-$4711 at $z=6.526$) and six other quasars with $6.438 < z < 6.747$ from the XMM-Newton public archive. Two of the nine quasars are detected at a high ($>$4$\sigma$) significance level: VDES J0224$-$4711(z=6.53) at $9\sigma$ and PSO J159$-$02 ($z=6.38$) at $8\sigma$. They have a photon index of $\Gamma=1.82^{+0.29}_{-0.27}$ and $\Gamma=1.94^{+0.31}_{-0.29}$ respectively, which is consistent with the mean value of $\sim1.9$ found for quasars at all redshifts. The rest-frame $2-10$ keV luminosity of VDES J0224$-$4711, is $L_{2-10\mathrm{keV}} = (2.92\pm0.43)\times10^{45}\;\mathrm{erg\;s^{-1}}$, which makes this quasar one of the most X-ray luminous quasars at $z>5.5$ and the most X-ray luminous quasar at $z>6.5$, with a luminosity 6 times and 2.5 times larger than ULAS J1120+0641 ($z=7.08$) and ULAS J1342+0928 ($z=7.54$) respectively. The X-ray-to-optical power-law slopes of the nine quasars are consistent with the previously observed anti-correlation of $\alpha_{ox}$ with UV luminosity $L_{2500\mathrm{\AA}}$. We find no evidence for evolution of $\alpha_{ox}$ with redshift when the anti-correlation with UV luminosity is taken into account. Similar to previous studies at z$\sim$6 we have found remarkably consistent X-ray spectral properties between low (z$\sim$1) and high-redshift quasars. Our results add further evidence to the picture that the observable properties of high luminosity quasars over the UV to X-ray spectral region have not evolved significantly from $z\sim7$ to the present day and that quasars comparable to local versions existed 800 million years after the big bang., Comment: 8 pages; resubmitted to MNRAS

We present two catalogues of active galactic nucleus (AGN) candidates selected from the latest data of two all-sky surveys -- Data Release 2 (DR2) of the \emph{Gaia} mission and the unWISE catalogue of the \emph{Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer} (\emph{WISE}). We train a random forest classifier to predict the probability of each source in the \emph{Gaia}-unWISE joint sample being an AGN, $P_{\rm RF}$, based on \emph{Gaia} astrometric and photometric measurements and unWISE photometry. The two catalogues, which we designate C75 and R85, are constructed by applying different $P_{\rm RF}$ threshold cuts to achieve an overall completeness of 75\% ($\approx$90\% at \emph{Gaia} $G\leq20$ mag) and reliability of 85\% respectively. The C75 (R85) catalogue contains 2,734,464 (2,182,193) AGN candidates across the effective 36,000 deg$^2$ sky, of which $\approx$0.91 (0.52) million are new discoveries. Photometric redshifts of the AGN candidates are derived by a random forest regressor using \emph{Gaia} and \emph{WISE} magnitudes and colours. The estimated overall photometric redshift accuracy is 0.11. Cross-matching the AGN candidates with a sample of known bright cluster galaxies, we identify a high-probability strongly-lensed AGN candidate system, SDSS\,J1326$+$4806, with a large image separation of 21\farcs06. All the AGN candidates in our catalogues will have $\sim$5-year long light curves from \emph{Gaia} by the end of the mission, and thus will be a great resource for AGN variability studies. Our AGN catalogues will also be helpful in AGN target selections for future spectroscopic surveys, especially ones in the southern hemisphere. We present the discovery of a new $z \sim 6.8$ quasar discovered with the near-IR VISTA Hemisphere Survey (VHS) which has been spectroscopically confirmed by the ESO New Technology Telescope (NTT) and the Magellan telescope. This quasar has been selected by spectral energy distribution (SED) classification using near infrared data from VISTA, optical data from Pan-STARRS, and mid-IR data from WISE. The SED classification algorithm is used to statistically rank two classes; foreground Galactic low-mass stars and high redshift quasars, prior to spectroscopic observation. Forced photometry on Pan-STARRS pixels for VHS J0411-0907 allows to improve the SED classification reduced-$\chi^2$ and photometric redshift. VHS J0411-0907 ($z=6.82$, $y_{AB} = 20.1$ mag, $J_{AB} = 20.0$ mag) has the brightest J-band continuum magnitude of the nine known quasars at $z > 6.7$ and is currently the highest redshift quasar detected in the Pan-STARRS survey. This quasar has one of the lowest black hole mass ($M_{\rm{BH}}= (6.13 \pm 0.51)\times 10^8\:\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$) and the highest Eddington ratio ($2.37\pm0.22$) of the known quasars at $z>6.5$. The high Eddington ratio indicates that some very high-$z$ quasars are undergoing super Eddington accretion. We also present coefficients of the best polynomials fits for colours vs spectral type on the Pan-STARRS, VISTA and WISE system for MLT dwarfs and present a forecast for the expected numbers of quasars at $z>6.5$., Comment: 14 pages, accepted for publication by MNRAS

We report the discovery and spectroscopic confirmation of 22 new gravitationally lensed quasars found using $\textit{Gaia}$ data release 2. The selection was made using several techniques: multiple $\textit{Gaia}$ detections around objects in quasar candidate catalogues, modelling of unWISE coadd pixels using $\textit{Gaia}$ astrometry, and $\textit{Gaia}$ detections offset from photometric and spectroscopic galaxies. Spectra of 33 candidates were obtained with the William Herschel Telescope, 22 of which are lensed quasars, 2 highly probably lensed quasars, 5 nearly identical quasar pairs, 1 inconclusive system, and 3 contaminants. Of the 3 confirmed quadruply imaged systems, J2145+6345 is a 2.1 arcsecond separation quad with 4 bright images ($G$=16.86, 17.26, 18.34, 18.56), making it ideal for time delay monitoring. Analysing this new sample alongside known lenses in the Pan-STARRS footprint, and comparing to expected numbers of lenses, we show that, as expected, we are biased towards systems with bright lensing galaxies and low source redshifts. We discuss possible techniques to remove this bias from future searches. A |b|>20 complete sample of lensed quasars detected by $\textit{Gaia}$ and with image separations above 1 arcsecond will provide a valuable statistical sample of around 350 systems. Currently only 96 known lenses satisfy these criteria, yet promisingly, our unWISE modelling technique is able to recover all of these with simple WISE-$\textit{Gaia}$ colour cuts that remove $\sim$80 per cent of previously followed-up contaminants. We report the discovery, spectroscopic confirmation and preliminary characterisation of 24 gravitationally lensed quasars identified using Gaia observations. Candidates were selected in the Pan-STARRS footprint with quasar-like WISE colours or as photometric quasars from SDSS, requiring either multiple detections in Gaia or a single Gaia detection near a morphological galaxy. The Pan-STARRS grizY images were modelled for the most promising candidates and 60 candidate systems were followed up with the William Herschel Telescope. 13 of the lenses were discovered as Gaia multiples and 10 as single Gaia detections near galaxies. We also discover 1 lens identified through a quasar emission line in an SDSS galaxy spectrum. The lenses have median image separation 2.13 arcsec and the source redshifts range from 1.06 to 3.36. 4 systems are quadruply-imaged and 20 are doubly-imaged. Deep CFHT data reveal an Einstein ring in one double system. We also report 12 quasar pairs, 10 of which have components at the same redshift and require further follow-up to rule out the lensing hypothesis. We compare the properties of these lenses and other known lenses recovered by our search method to a complete sample of simulated lenses to show the lenses we are missing are mainly those with small separations and higher source redshifts. The initial Gaia data release only catalogues all images of ~ 30% of known bright lensed quasars, however the improved completeness of Gaia data release 2 will help find all bright lensed quasars on the sky., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, accepted by MNRAS

Gaia's exceptional resolution (FWHM $\sim$ 0.1$^{\prime\prime}$) allows identification and cataloguing of the multiple images of gravitationally lensed quasars. We investigate a sample of 49 known lensed quasars in the SDSS footprint, with image separations less than 2$^{\prime\prime}$, and find that 8 are detected with multiple components in the first Gaia data release. In the case of the 41 single Gaia detections, we generally are able to distinguish these lensed quasars from single quasars when comparing Gaia flux and position measurements to those of Pan-STARRS and SDSS. This is because the multiple images of these lensed quasars are typically blended in ground-based imaging and therefore the total flux and a flux-weighted centroid are measured, which can differ significantly from the fluxes and centroids of the individual components detected by Gaia. We compare the fluxes through an empirical fit of Pan-STARRS griz photometry to the wide optical Gaia bandpass values using a sample of isolated quasars. The positional offsets are calculated from a recalibrated astrometric SDSS catalogue. Applying flux and centroid difference criteria to spectroscopically confirmed quasars, we discover 4 new sub-arcsecond-separation lensed quasar candidates which have two distinct components of similar colour in archival CFHT or HSC data. Our method based on single Gaia detections can be used to identify the $\sim$ 1400 lensed quasars with image separation above 0.5$^{\prime\prime}$, expected to have only one image bright enough to be detected by Gaia., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 10 pages, 10 figures

We report the discovery, spectroscopic confirmation, and mass modelling of the gravitationally lensed quasar system PS J0630-1201. The lens was discovered by matching a photometric quasar catalogue compiled from Pan-STARRS and WISE photometry to the Gaia DR1 catalogue, exploiting the high spatial resolution of the latter (FWHM $\sim $0.1") to identify the three brightest components of the lens. Follow-up spectroscopic observations with the WHT confirm the multiple objects are quasars at redshift $z_{q}=3.34$. Further follow-up with Keck AO high-resolution imaging reveals that the system is composed of two lensing galaxies and the quasar is lensed into a $\sim$2.8" separation four-image cusp configuration with a fifth image clearly visible, and a 1.0" arc due to the lensed quasar host galaxy. The system is well-modelled with two singular isothermal ellipsoids, reproducing the position of the fifth image. We present ALMA band 3 observations of the CO(6-5), CO(7-6), and [CI] 369micron emission lines in three of the highest redshift quasar host galaxies at 6.62", or >14kpc) CO emission in all three quasar hosts. In two sources, we detect the continuum emission around 400micron (rest-frame), and in one source we detect [CI] at low significance. We derive molecular gas reservoirs of (1-3)x10^10 M_sun in the quasar hosts, i.e. approximately only 10 times the mass of their central supermassive black holes. The extrapolated [CII]-to-CO(1-0) luminosity ratio is 2500-4200, consistent with measurements in galaxies at lower redshift. The detection of the [CI] line in one quasar host galaxy and the limit on the [CI] emission in the other two hosts enables a first characterization of the physical properties of the interstellar medium in z~7 quasar hosts. In the sources, the derived global CO/[CII]/[CI] line ratios are consistent with expectations from photodissociation regions (PDR), but not X-ray dominated regions (XDR). This suggest that quantities derived from the molecular gas and dust emission are related to ongoing star-formation activity in the quasar hosts, providing further evidence that the quasar hosts studied here harbor intense starbursts in addition to their active nucleus., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures. We perform a systematic search for long-term extreme variability quasars (EVQs) in the overlapping Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and 3-Year Dark Energy Survey (DES) imaging, which provide light curves spanning more than 15 years. We identified ~1000 EVQs with a maximum g band magnitude change of more than 1 mag over this period, about 10% of all quasars searched. The EVQs have L_bol~10^45-10^47 erg/s and L/L_Edd~0.01-1. Accounting for selection effects, we estimate an intrinsic EVQ fraction of ~30-50% among all g<~22 quasars over a baseline of ~15 years. These EVQs are good candidates for so-called "changing-look quasars", where a spectral transition between the two types of quasars (broad-line and narrow-line) is observed between the dim and bright states. We performed detailed multi-wavelength, spectral and variability analyses for the EVQs and compared to their parent quasar sample. We found that EVQs are distinct from a control sample of quasars matched in redshift and optical luminosity: (1) their UV broad emission lines have larger equivalent widths; (2) their Eddington ratios are systematically lower; and (3) they are more variable on all timescales. The intrinsic difference in quasar properties for EVQs suggest that internal processes associated with accretion are the main driver for the observed extreme long-term variability. However, despite their different properties, EVQs seem to be in the tail of a continuous distribution of quasar properties, rather than standing out as a distinct population. We speculate that EVQs are normal quasars accreting at relatively low accretion rates, where the accretion flow is more likely to experience instabilities that drive the factor of few changes in flux on multi-year timescales., Comment: submitted to ApJ; comments welcome

We present a search for metal absorption line systems at the highest redshifts to date using a deep (30h) VLT/X-Shooter spectrum of the z = 7.084 quasi-stellar object (QSO) ULAS J1120+0641. We detect seven intervening systems at z > 5.5, with the highest-redshift system being a C IV absorber at z = 6.51. We find tentative evidence that the mass density of C IV remains flat or declines with redshift at z < 6, while the number density of C II systems remains relatively flat over 5 < z < 7. These trends are broadly consistent with models of chemical enrichment by star formation-driven winds that include a softening of the ultraviolet background towards higher redshifts. We find a larger number of weak ( W_rest < 0.3A ) Mg II systems over 5.9 < z < 7.0 than predicted by a power-law fit to the number density of stronger systems. This is consistent with trends in the number density of weak Mg II systems at z = 2.5, and suggests that the mechanisms that create these absorbers are already in place at z = 7. Finally, we investigate the associated narrow Si IV, C IV, and N V absorbers located near the QSO redshift, and find that at least one component shows evidence of partial covering of the continuum source., Comment: 18 pages, 23 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present ALMA observations of the [CII] fine structure line and the underlying far-infrared (FIR) dust continuum emission in J1120+0641, the most distant quasar currently known (z=7.1). We also present observations targeting the CO(2-1), CO(7-6) and [CI] 369 micron lines in the same source obtained at the VLA and PdBI. We find a [CII] line flux of F_[CII]=1.11+/-0.10 Jy km/s and a continuum flux density of S_227GHz=0.53+/-0.04 mJy/beam, consistent with previous unresolved measurements. No other source is detected in continuum or [CII] emission in the field covered by ALMA (~25"). At the resolution of our ALMA observations (0.23", or 1.2 kpc, a factor ~70 smaller beam area compared to previous measurements), we find that the majority of the emission is very compact: a high fraction (~80%) of the total line and continuum flux is associated with a region 1-1.5 kpc in diameter. The remaining ~20% of the emission is distributed over a larger area with radius <4 kpc. The [CII] emission does not exhibit ordered motion on kpc-scales: applying the virial theorem yields an upper limit on the dynamical mass of the host galaxy of (4.3+/-0.9)x10^10 M_sun, only ~20x higher than the central black hole. The other targeted lines (CO(2-1), CO(7-6) and [CI]) are not detected, but the limits of the line ratios with respect to the [CII] emission imply that the heating in the quasar host is dominated by star formation, and not by the accreting black hole. The star-formation rate implied by the FIR continuum is 105-340 M_sun/yr, with a resulting star-formation rate surface density of ~100-350 M_sun/yr/kpc^2, well below the value for Eddington-accretion-limited star formation., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. We present the Data Release 12 Quasar catalog (DR12Q) from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) of the SDSS-III. This catalog includes all SDSS-III/BOSS objects that were spectroscopically targeted as quasar candidates during the full survey and that are confirmed as quasars via visual inspection of the spectra, have luminosities Mi[z=2]<-20.5 (in a LCDM cosmology with H_0 = 70 km/s/Mpc, Omega_M = 0.3, and Omega _L=0.7), and either display at least one emission line with a full width at half maximum (FWHM)larger than 500 km/s or, if not, have interesting/complex absorption features. The catalog also includes previously known quasars (mostly from SDSS-I and II) that were reobserved by BOSS. The catalog contains 297,301 quasars detected over 9,376 square degrees with robust identification and redshift measured by a combination of principal component eigenspectra. The number of quasars with z>2.15 is about an order of magnitude greater than the number of z>2.15 quasars known prior to BOSS. Redshifts and FWHMs are provided for the strongest emission lines (CIV, CIII], MgII). The catalog identifies 29,580 broad absorption line quasars and lists their characteristics. For each object, the catalog presents five-band (u, g, r, i, z) CCD-based photometry together with some information on the optical morphology and the selection criteria. When available, the catalog also provides information on the optical variability of quasars using SDSS and PTF multi-epoch photometry. The catalog also contains X-ray, ultraviolet, near-infrared, and radio emission properties of the quasars, when available, from other large-area surveys. We present the discovery and preliminary characterization of a gravitationally lensed quasar with a source redshift $z_{s}=2.74$ and image separation of $2.9"$ lensed by a foreground $z_{l}=0.40$ elliptical galaxy. Since the images of gravitationally lensed quasars are the superposition of multiple point sources and a foreground lensing galaxy, we have developed a morphology independent multi-wavelength approach to the photometric selection of lensed quasar candidates based on Gaussian Mixture Models (GMM) supervised machine learning. Using this technique and $gi$ multicolour photometric observations from the Dark Energy Survey (DES), near IR $JK$ photometry from the VISTA Hemisphere Survey (VHS) and WISE mid IR photometry, we have identified a candidate system with two catalogue components with $i_{AB}=18.61$ and $i_{AB}=20.44$ comprised of an elliptical galaxy and two blue point sources. Spectroscopic follow-up with NTT and the use of an archival AAT spectrum show that the point sources can be identified as a lensed quasar with an emission line redshift of $z=2.739\pm0.003$ and a foreground early type galaxy with $z=0.400\pm0.002$. We model the system as a single isothermal ellipsoid and find the Einstein radius $\theta_E \sim 1.47"$, enclosed mass $M_{enc} \sim 4 \times 10^{11}$M$_{\odot}$ and a time delay of $\sim$52 days. We present the discovery of a z=0.65 low-ionization broad absorption line (LoBAL) quasar in a post-starburst galaxy in data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) and spectroscopy from the Australian Dark Energy Survey (OzDES). LoBAL quasars are a minority of all BALs, and rarer still is that this object also exhibits broad FeII (an FeLoBAL) and Balmer absorption. This is the first BAL quasar that has signatures of recently truncated star formation, which we estimate ended about 40 Myr ago. The characteristic signatures of an FeLoBAL require high column densities, which could be explained by the emergence of a young quasar from an early, dust-enshrouded phase, or by clouds compressed by a blast wave. The age of the starburst component is comparable to estimates of the lifetime of quasars, so if we assume the quasar activity is related to the truncation of the star formation, this object is better explained by the blast wave scenario., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, and 1 table; Submitted to MNRAS. We use near infrared integral field unit (IFU) spectroscopy to search for H$\alpha$ emission associated with star formation in a sample of 28 heavily reddened ($E(B-V)\simeq$0.5-1.9), hyperluminous ($log(L_{bol}/ergs^{-1})\simeq$47-48) broad-line quasars at $z\simeq$1.4-2.7. Sixteen of the 28 quasars show evidence for star formation with an average extinction-corrected star formation rate (SFR) of 320$\pm$70M$_\odot$yr$^{-1}$. A stacked spectrum of the detections shows weak [NII], consistent with star formation as the origin of the narrow H$\alpha$ emission. The star-forming regions are spatially unresolved in 11 of the 16 detections and constrained to lie within $\sim$6kpc of the quasar emission. In the five resolved detections we find the star-forming regions are extended on scales of $\sim$8kpc around the quasar emission. The prevalence of high SFRs is consistent with the identification of the heavily reddened quasar population as representing a transitional phase from apparent `starburst galaxies' to optically-luminous quasars. Upper limits are determined for 10 quasars in which star formation is undetected. In two of the quasars the SFR is constrained to be relatively modest, $<$50M$_\odot$yr$^{-1}$, but significantly higher levels of star formation could be present in the other eight quasars. The combination of the 16 strong star formation detections and the eight high SFR limits means that high levels of star formation may be present in the majority of the sample. Higher spatial resolution data, of multiple emission lines, will allow us to better understand the interplay between star formation and Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) activity in these transitioning quasars., Comment: 20 pages, 26 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present spectroscopic confirmation of two new lensed quasars via data obtained at the 6.5m Magellan/Baade Telescope. The lens candidates have been selected from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) and WISE based on their multi-band photometry and extended morphology in DES images. Images of DES J0115-5244 show two blue point sources at either side of a red galaxy. Our long-slit data confirm that both point sources are images of the same quasar at $z_{s}=1.64.$ The Einstein Radius estimated from the DES images is $0.51$". DES J2200+0110 is in the area of overlap between DES and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Two blue components are visible in the DES and SDSS images. The SDSS fiber spectrum shows a quasar component at $z_{s}=2.38$ and absorption compatible with Mg II and Fe II at $z_{l}=0.799$, which we tentatively associate with the foreground lens galaxy. The long-slit Magellan spectra show that the blue components are resolved images of the same quasar. The Einstein Radius is $0.68$" corresponding to an enclosed mass of $1.6\times10^{11}\,M_{\odot}.$ Three other candidates were observed and rejected, two being low-redshift pairs of starburst galaxies, and one being a quasar behind a blue star. As part of the OzDES spectroscopic survey we are carrying out a large scale reverberation mapping study of $\sim$500 quasars over five years in the 30 deg$^2$ area of the Dark Energy Survey (DES) supernova fields. These quasars have redshifts ranging up to 4 and have apparent AB magnitudes between $16.8

We present a new population of z>2 dust-reddened, Type 1 quasars with 0.510^{13}L_0), high-redshift dusty quasars to 38. There is no evidence for reddened quasars having significantly different H$\alpha$ equivalent widths relative to unobscured quasars. The average black-hole masses (~10^9-10^10 M_0) and bolometric luminosities (~10^{47} erg/s) are comparable to the most luminous unobscured quasars at the same redshift, but with a tail extending to very high luminosities of ~10^{48} erg/s. Sixty-six per cent of the reddened quasars are detected at $>3\sigma$ at 22um by WISE. The average 6um rest-frame luminosity is log10(L6um/erg/s)=47.1+/-0.4, making the objects among the mid-infrared brightest AGN currently known. The extinction-corrected space-density estimate now extends over three magnitudes (-30 < M_i < -27) and demonstrates that the reddened quasar luminosity function is significantly flatter than that of the unobscured quasar population at z=2-3. At the brightest magnitudes, M_i < -29, the space density of our dust-reddened population exceeds that of unobscured quasars. A model where the probability that a quasar becomes dust-reddened increases at high luminosity is consistent with the observations and such a dependence could be explained by an increase in luminosity and extinction during AGN-fuelling phases. The properties of our obscured Type 1 quasars are distinct from the heavily obscured, Compton-thick AGN that have been identified at much fainter luminosities and we conclude that they likely correspond to a brief evolutionary phase in massive galaxy formation., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures (+ 2 appendices), Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The third generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-III) took data from 2008 to 2014 using the original SDSS wide-field imager, the original and an upgraded multi-object fiber-fed optical spectrograph, a new near-infrared high-resolution spectrograph, and a novel optical interferometer. All the data from SDSS-III are now made public. In particular, this paper describes Data Release 11 (DR11) including all data acquired through 2013 July, and Data Release 12 (DR12) adding data acquired through 2014 July (including all data included in previous data releases), marking the end of SDSS-III observing. Relative to our previous public release (DR10), DR12 adds one million new spectra of galaxies and quasars from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) over an additional 3000 sq. deg of sky, more than triples the number of H-band spectra of stars as part of the Apache Point Observatory (APO) Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE), and includes repeated accurate radial velocity measurements of 5500 stars from the Multi-Object APO Radial Velocity Exoplanet Large-area Survey (MARVELS). The APOGEE outputs now include measured abundances of 15 different elements for each star. In total, SDSS-III added 2350 sq. deg of ugriz imaging; 155,520 spectra of 138,099 stars as part of the Sloan Exploration of Galactic Understanding and Evolution 2 (SEGUE-2) survey; 2,497,484 BOSS spectra of 1,372,737 galaxies, 294,512 quasars, and 247,216 stars over 9376 sq. deg; 618,080 APOGEE spectra of 156,593 stars; and 197,040 MARVELS spectra of 5,513 stars. We present optical and near-infrared imaging of the field of the z=7.0842 quasar ULAS J112001.48+064124.3 taken with the Hubble Space Telescope. We use these data to search for galaxies that may be physically associated with the quasar, using the Lyman break technique, and find three such objects, although the detection of one in Spitzer Space Telescope imaging strongly suggests it lies at z~2. This is consistent with the field luminosity function and indicates that there is no excess of >L* galaxies within 1 Mpc of the quasar. A detection of the quasar shortward of the Ly-alpha line is consistent with the previously observed evolution of the intergalactic medium at z>5.5., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 8 pages

We present Herschel and XMM-Newton observations of ULASJ1234+0907 ($z=2.503$), the reddest broad-line Type 1 quasar currently known with (i-K)>7.1. Herschel observations indicate that the quasar host is a hyperluminous infrared galaxy (HyLIRG) with a total infrared luminosity of log10(LIR/L0)=13.90+/-0.02. A greybody fit gives a dust temperature of Td=60+/-3K assuming an emissivity index of beta=1.5, considerably higher than in submillimeter bright galaxies observed at similar redshifts. The star formation rate is estimated to be >2000M0/yr even accounting for a significant contribution from an AGN component to the total infrared luminosity or requiring that only the far infra-red luminosity is powered by a starburst. XMM-Newton observations constrain the hard X-ray luminosity to be L(2-10keV)=1.3e45 erg/s putting ULASJ1234+0907 among the brightest X-ray quasars known. Through very deep optical and near infra-red imaging of the field at sub-arcsecond seeing, we demonstrate that despite its extreme luminosity, it is highly unlikely that ULASJ1234+0907 is being lensed. We measure a neutral hydrogen column density of NH=9e21/cm^2 corresponding to AV~6 mags. The observed properties of ULASJ1234+0907 - high luminosity and Eddington ratio, broad lines, moderate column densities and significant infra-red emission from re-processed dust - are similar to those predicted by galaxy formation simulations for the AGN blowout phase. The high Eddington ratio combined with the presence of significant amounts of dust in this quasar, is expected to drive strong outflows due to the effects of radiation pressure on dust. We present the Data Release 10 Quasar (DR10Q) catalog from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III. The catalog includes all BOSS objects that were targeted as quasar candidates during the first 2.5 years of the survey and that are confirmed as quasars via visual inspection of the spectra. The catalog also includes known quasars (mostly from SDSS-I and II) that were reobserved by BOSS. The catalog contains 166,583 quasars (74,454 are new discoveries since SDSS-DR9) detected over 6,373 deg$^{2}$ with robust identification and redshift measured by a combination of principal component eigenspectra. The number of quasars with $z>2.15$ (117,668) is $\sim$5 times greater than the number of $z>2.15$ quasars known prior to BOSS. Redshifts and FWHMs are provided for the strongest emission lines (CIV, CIII, MgII). The catalog identifies 16,461 broad absorption line quasars and gives their characteristics. For each object, the catalog presents five-band (u, g, r, i, z) CCD-based photometry with typical accuracy of 0.03 mag and information on the optical morphology and selection method. The catalog also contains X-ray, ultraviolet, near-infrared, and radio emission properties of the quasars, when available, from other large-area surveys. The calibrated digital spectra cover the wavelength region 3,600-10,500\AA\ at a spectral resolution in the range 1,300$<$R$<$2,500; the spectra can be retrieved from the SDSS Catalog Archive Server. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) has been in operation since 2000 April. This paper presents the tenth public data release (DR10) from its current incarnation, SDSS-III. This data release includes the first spectroscopic data from the Apache Point Observatory Galaxy Evolution Experiment (APOGEE), along with spectroscopic data from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) taken through 2012 July. The APOGEE instrument is a near-infrared R~22,500 300-fiber spectrograph covering 1.514--1.696 microns. The APOGEE survey is studying the chemical abundances and radial velocities of roughly 100,000 red giant star candidates in the bulge, bar, disk, and halo of the Milky Way. DR10 includes 178,397 spectra of 57,454 stars, each typically observed three or more times, from APOGEE. Derived quantities from these spectra (radial velocities, effective temperatures, surface gravities, and metallicities) are also included.DR10 also roughly doubles the number of BOSS spectra over those included in the ninth data release. We present the first sample of spectroscopically confirmed heavily reddened broad-line quasars selected using the new near infra-red VISTA Hemisphere Survey and WISE All-Sky Survey. Observations of four candidates with (J-K)>2.5 and K<=16.5 over ~180 sq deg, leads to confirmation that two are highly dust-reddened broad-line Type 1 quasars at z~2. The typical dust extinctions are AV ~ 2-2.5 mags. We measure black-hole masses of ~10^9 M0 and extinction corrected bolometric luminosities of ~10^47 erg/s, making these among the brightest Type 1 quasars currently known. Despite this, these quasars lie well below the detection limits of wide-field optical surveys like the SDSS with iAB > 22. We also present WISE photometry at 3--22um, for our full sample of spectroscopically confirmed reddened quasars including those selected from the UKIDSS Large Area Survey (Banerji et al. 2012a). We demonstrate that the rest-frame infrared SEDs of these reddened quasars are similar to UV-luminous Type 1 quasars with significant hot dust emission and starburst quasar hosts like Mrk231. The average 12um flux density of our reddened quasars is similar to that of the recently discovered HyLIRG WISE1814+3412 (z=2.452) at similar redshifts, with two of our reddened quasars also having comparable 22um flux densities to this extreme HyLIRG. We present the Data Release 9 Quasar (DR9Q) catalog from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III. The catalog includes all BOSS objects that were targeted as quasar candidates during the survey, are spectrocopically confirmed as quasars via visual inspection, have luminosities Mi[z=2]<-20.5 (in a $\Lambda$CDM cosmology with H0 = 70 km/s/Mpc, $\Omega_{\rm M}$ = 0.3, and $\Omega_{\Lambda}$ = 0.7) and either display at least one emission line with full width at half maximum (FWHM) larger than 500 km/s or, if not, have interesting/complex absorption features. It includes as well, known quasars (mostly from SDSS-I and II) that were reobserved by BOSS. This catalog contains 87,822 quasars (78,086 are new discoveries) detected over 3,275 deg$^{2}$ with robust identification and redshift measured by a combination of principal component eigenspectra newly derived from a training set of 8,632 spectra from SDSS-DR7. The number of quasars with $z>2.15$ (61,931) is ~2.8 times larger than the number of z>2.15 quasars previously known. Redshifts and FWHMs are provided for the strongest emission lines (CIV, CIII], MgII). The catalog identifies 7,533 broad absorption line quasars and gives their characteristics. For each object the catalog presents five-band (u,g,r,i,z) CCD-based photometry with typical accuracy of 0.03 mag, and information on the morphology and selection method. The Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) is designed to measure the scale of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) in the clustering of matter over a larger volume than the combined efforts of all previous spectroscopic surveys of large scale structure. BOSS uses 1.5 million luminous galaxies as faint as i=19.9 over 10,000 square degrees to measure BAO to redshifts z<0.7. Observations of neutral hydrogen in the Lyman alpha forest in more than 150,000 quasar spectra (g<22) will constrain BAO over the redshift range 2.15

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey III (SDSS-III) presents the first spectroscopic data from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS). This ninth data release (DR9) of the SDSS project includes 535,995 new galaxy spectra (median z=0.52), 102,100 new quasar spectra (median z=2.32), and 90,897 new stellar spectra, along with the data presented in previous data releases. These spectra were obtained with the new BOSS spectrograph and were taken between 2009 December and 2011 July. In addition, the stellar parameters pipeline, which determines radial velocities, surface temperatures, surface gravities, and metallicities of stars, has been updated and refined with improvements in temperature estimates for stars with T_eff<5000 K and in metallicity estimates for stars with [Fe/H]>-0.5. DR9 includes new stellar parameters for all stars presented in DR8, including stars from SDSS-I and II, as well as those observed as part of the SDSS-III Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration-2 (SEGUE-2). The astrometry error introduced in the DR8 imaging catalogs has been corrected in the DR9 data products. The next data release for SDSS-III will be in Summer 2013, which will present the first data from the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) along with another year of data from BOSS, followed by the final SDSS-III data release in December 2014., Comment: 9 figures; 2 tables. The 4MOST consortium is currently halfway through a Conceptual Design study for ESO with the aim to develop a wide-field (>3 square degree, goal >5 square degree), high-multiplex (>1500 fibres, goal 3000 fibres) spectroscopic survey facility for an ESO 4m-class telescope (VISTA). 4MOST will run permanently on the telescope to perform a 5 year public survey yielding more than 20 million spectra at resolution R~5000 ({\lambda}=390-1000 nm) and more than 2 million spectra at R~20,000 (395-456.5 nm & 587-673 nm). The 4MOST design is especially intended to complement three key all-sky, space-based observatories of prime European interest: Gaia, eROSITA and Euclid. Initial design and performance estimates for the wide-field corrector concepts are presented. We consider two fibre positioner concepts, a well-known Phi-Theta system and a new R-Theta concept with a large patrol area. The spectrographs are fixed configuration two-arm spectrographs, with dedicated spectrographs for the high- and low-resolution. A full facility simulator is being developed to guide trade-off decisions regarding the optimal field-of-view, number of fibres needed, and the relative fraction of high-to-low resolution fibres. Mock catalogues with template spectra from seven Design Reference Surveys are simulated to verify the science requirements of 4MOST. We present a new sample of purely near infra-red selected KVega<16.5 extremely red ((J-K)>2.5) quasar candidates at z~2 from 900 sq deg of data in the UKIDSS Large Area Survey (LAS). Five of these are spectroscopically confirmed to be heavily reddened Type 1 AGN with broad emission lines bringing our total sample of reddened quasars from the UKIDSS-LAS to 12 at z=1.4-2.7. At these redshifts, Ha (6563A) is in the K-band. However, the mean Ha equivalent width of the reddened quasars is only ten per cent larger than that of the optically selected population and cannot explain the extreme colours. Instead, dust extinction of Av~2-6 mags is required to reproduce the continuum colours of our sources. This is comparable to the dust extinctions seen in submillimetre galaxies at similar redshifts. We argue that the AGN are likely being observed in a relatively short-lived breakout phase when they are expelling gas and dust following a massive starburst, subsequently turning into UV-luminous quasars. Some of our quasars show direct evidence for strong outflows (v~800-1000 km/s) affecting the Ha line consistent with this scenario. We predict that a larger fraction of reddened quasar hosts are likely to be submillimetre bright compared to the UV-luminous quasar population. We use our sample to place new constraints on the fraction of obscured Type 1 AGN likely to be missed in optical surveys. Taken at face-value our findings suggest that the obscured fraction depends on quasar luminosity. The space density of obscured quasars is ~5x that inferred for UV-bright quasars from the SDSS luminosity function at Mi<-30 but seems to drop at lower luminosities even accounting for various sources of incompleteness in our sample (abridged)., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The intergalactic medium was not completely reionized until approximately a billion years after the Big Bang, as revealed by observations of quasars with redshifts of less than 6.5. It has been difficult to probe to higher redshifts, however, because quasars have historically been identified in optical surveys, which are insensitive to sources at redshifts exceeding 6.5. Here we report observations of a quasar (ULAS J112001.48+064124.3) at a redshift of 7.085, which is 0.77 billion years after the Big Bang. ULAS J1120+0461 had a luminosity of 6.3x10^13 L_Sun and hosted a black hole with a mass of 2x10^9 M_Sun (where L_Sun and M_Sun are the luminosity and mass of the Sun). The measured radius of the ionized near zone around ULAS J1120+0641 is 1.9 megaparsecs, a factor of three smaller than typical for quasars at redshifts between 6.0 and 6.4. The near zone transmission profile is consistent with a Ly alpha damping wing, suggesting that the neutral fraction of the intergalactic medium in front of ULAS J1120+0641 exceeded 0.1., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures; source data available at http://astro.ic.ac.uk/~mortlock/ulas_j1120+0641/

The quasar ULAS J1120+0641 at redshift z=7.085 has a highly ionised near zone which is smaller than those around quasars of similar luminosity at z~6. The spectrum also exhibits evidence for a damping wing extending redward of the systemic Lya redshift. We use radiative transfer simulations in a cosmological context to investigate the implications for the ionisation state of the inhomogeneous IGM surrounding this quasar. Our simulations show that the transmission profile is consistent with an IGM in the vicinity of the quasar with a volume averaged HI fraction of f_HI>0.1 and that ULAS J1120+0641 has been bright for 10^6--10^7 yr. The observed spectrum is also consistent with smaller IGM neutral fractions, f_HI ~ 10^-3--10-4, if a damped Lya system in an otherwise highly ionised IGM lies within 5 proper Mpc of the quasar. This is, however, predicted to occur in only ~5 per cent of our simulated sight-lines for a bright phase of 10^6--10^7 yr. Unless ULAS J1120+0641 grows during a previous optically obscured phase, the low age inferred for the quasar adds to the theoretical challenge of forming a 2x10^9 M_sol black hole at this high redshift., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted to MNRAS letters

We describe a technique for simultaneously classifying and estimating the redshift of quasars. It can separate quasars from stars in arbitrary redshift ranges, estimate full posterior distribution functions for the redshift, and naturally incorporate flux uncertainties, missing data, and multi-wavelength photometry. We build models of quasars in flux-redshift space by applying the extreme deconvolution technique to estimate the underlying density. By integrating this density over redshift one can obtain quasar flux-densities in different redshift ranges. This approach allows for efficient, consistent, and fast classification and photometric redshift estimation. This is achieved by combining the speed obtained by choosing simple analytical forms as the basis of our density model with the flexibility of non-parametric models through the use of many simple components with many parameters. We show that this technique is competitive with the best photometric quasar classification techniques---which are limited to fixed, broad redshift ranges and high signal-to-noise ratio data---and with the best photometric redshift techniques when applied to broadband optical data. We demonstrate that the inclusion of UV and NIR data significantly improves photometric quasar--star separation and essentially resolves all of the redshift degeneracies for quasars inherent to the ugriz filter system, even when included data have a low signal-to-noise ratio. For quasars spectroscopically confirmed by the SDSS 84 and 97 percent of the objects with GALEX UV and UKIDSS NIR data have photometric redshifts within 0.1 and 0.3, respectively, of the spectroscopic redshift; this amounts to about a factor of three improvement over ugriz-only photometric redshifts. Our code to calculate quasar probabilities and redshift probability distributions is publicly available.

We present near-IR spectroscopy of a sample of luminous (Lbol >10^14 Lsun), sub-millimeter-detected, dusty (M_dust~10^9 Msun), radio-quiet QSOs at z~2. We measure the redshift, width, and luminosity of the Halpha line, and the continuum luminosity near Ha. The Halpha emission line was strongly detected in all sources. Two components -- a very broad (>~5000 km/s) Gaussian and an intermediate-width (>~1500 km/s) Gaussian, were required to fit the Halpha profile of all observed QSOs. Narrow (<~1000 km/s) lines were not detected in the sample QSOs. Relative to the Halpha-derived QSO redshift, the rest-frame UV emission lines in these sub-mm bright QSOs show larger than average blue-shifted velocities, potentially tracing strong -- up to 3000 km/s -- outflows in the Broad Line Region. With the exception of the one QSO which shows exceptionally broad Halpha lines, the black hole masses of the QSO sample are in the range log Mbh = 9.0--9.7 and the Eddington fractions are between 0.5 and ~1. In black hole mass and accretion rate, this sub-mm bright QSO sample is indistinguishable from the Shemmer et al. (2004) optically-bright QSO sample at z~2; the latter is likely dominated by sub-mm dim QSOs. Previous authors have demonstrated a correlation, over six orders of magnitude, between SFR and accretion rate in active galaxies: the sub-mm bright QSOs lie at the upper extremes of both quantities and their SFR is an order of magnitude higher than that predicted from the correlation, Comment: to appear in A&A

The SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), a five-year spectroscopic survey of 10,000 deg^2, achieved first light in late 2009. One of the key goals of BOSS is to measure the signature of baryon acoustic oscillations in the distribution of Ly-alpha absorption from the spectra of a sample of ~150,000 z>2.2 quasars. Along with measuring the angular diameter distance at z\approx2.5, BOSS will provide the first direct measurement of the expansion rate of the Universe at z > 2. One of the biggest challenges in achieving this goal is an efficient target selection algorithm for quasars over 2.2 < z < 3.5, where their colors overlap those of stars. During the first year of the BOSS survey, quasar target selection methods were developed and tested to meet the requirement of delivering at least 15 quasars deg^-2 in this redshift range, out of 40 targets deg^-2. To achieve these surface densities, the magnitude limit of the quasar targets was set at g <= 22.0 or r<=21.85. While detection of the BAO signature in the Ly-alpha absorption in quasar spectra does not require a uniform target selection, many other astrophysical studies do. We therefore defined a uniformly-selected subsample of 20 targets deg^-2, for which the selection efficiency is just over 50%. This "CORE" subsample will be fixed for Years Two through Five of the survey. In this paper we describe the evolution and implementation of the BOSS quasar target selection algorithms during the first two years of BOSS operations. We analyze the spectra obtained during the first year. 11,263 new z>2.2 quasars were spectroscopically confirmed by BOSS. Our current algorithms select an average of 15 z > 2.2 quasars deg^-2 from 40 targets deg^-2 using single-epoch SDSS imaging. Multi-epoch optical data and data at other wavelengths can further improve the efficiency and completeness of BOSS quasar target selection. High redshift quasars (HZQs) with redshifts of z >~ 6 are so rare that any photometrically-selected sample of sources with HZQ-like colours is likely to be dominated by Galactic stars and brown dwarfs scattered from the stellar locus. It is impractical to reobserve all such candidates, so an alternative approach was developed in which Bayesian model comparison techniques are used to calculate the probability that a candidate is a HZQ, P_q, by combining models of the quasar and star populations with the photometric measurements of the object. This method was motivated specifically by the large number of HZQ candidates identified by cross-matching the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Large Area Survey (LAS) to the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS): in the ~1900 deg^2 covered by the LAS in the UKIDSS Seventh Data Release (DR7) there are ~10^3 real astronomical point-sources with the measured colours of the target quasars, of which only ~10 are expected to be HZQs. Applying Bayesian model comparison to the sample reveals that most sources with HZQ-like colours have P_q <~ 0.1 and can be confidently rejected without the need for any further observations. In the case of the UKIDSS DR7 LAS, there were just 88 candidates with P_q >= 0.1; these object were prioritized for reobservation by ranking according to P_q (and their likely redshift, which was also inferred from the photometric data). Most candidates were rejected after one or two (moderate depth) photometric measurements by recalculating P_q using the new data. That left seven confirmed HZQs, three of which were previously identified in the SDSS and four of which were new UKIDSS discoveries. Building on the legacy of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-I and II), SDSS-III is a program of four spectroscopic surveys on three scientific themes: dark energy and cosmological parameters, the history and structure of the Milky Way, and the population of giant planets around other stars. In keeping with SDSS tradition, SDSS-III will provide regular public releases of all its data, beginning with SDSS DR8 (which occurred in Jan 2011). This paper presents an overview of the four SDSS-III surveys. BOSS will measure redshifts of 1.5 million massive galaxies and Lya forest spectra of 150,000 quasars, using the BAO feature of large scale structure to obtain percent-level determinations of the distance scale and Hubble expansion rate at z<0.7 and at z~2.5. SEGUE-2, which is now completed, measured medium-resolution (R=1800) optical spectra of 118,000 stars in a variety of target categories, probing chemical evolution, stellar kinematics and substructure, and the mass profile of the dark matter halo from the solar neighborhood to distances of 100 kpc. APOGEE will obtain high-resolution (R~30,000), high signal-to-noise (S/N>100 per resolution element), H-band (1.51-1.70 micron) spectra of 10^5 evolved, late-type stars, measuring separate abundances for ~15 elements per star and creating the first high-precision spectroscopic survey of all Galactic stellar populations (bulge, bar, disks, halo) with a uniform set of stellar tracers and spectral diagnostics. MARVELS will monitor radial velocities of more than 8000 FGK stars with the sensitivity and cadence (10-40 m/s, ~24 visits per star) needed to detect giant planets with periods up to two years, providing an unprecedented data set for understanding the formation and dynamical evolution of giant planet systems. A large sub-mm survey with Herschel will enable many exciting science opportunities, especially in an era of wide-field optical and radio surveys and high resolution cosmic microwave background experiments. The Herschel-SPIRE Legacy Survey (HSLS), will lead to imaging data over 4000 sq. degrees at 250, 350, and 500 micron. Major Goals of HSLS are: (a) produce a catalog of 2.5 to 3 million galaxies down to 26, 27 and 33 mJy (50% completeness; 5 sigma confusion noise) at 250, 350 and 500 micron, respectively, in the southern hemisphere (3000 sq. degrees) and in an equatorial strip (1000 sq. degrees), areas which have extensive multi-wavelength coverage and are easily accessible from ALMA. Two thirds of the of the sources are expected to be at z > 1, one third at z > 2 and about a 1000 at z > 5. (b) Remove point source confusion in secondary anisotropy studies with Planck and ground-based CMB data. (c) Find at least 1200 strongly lensed bright sub-mm sources leading to a 2% test of general relativity. (d) Identify 200 proto-cluster regions at z of 2 and perform an unbiased study of the environmental dependence of star formation. The quest to discover the most distant galaxies has developed rapidly in the last decade. We are now exploring redshifts of 6 and beyond, when the Universe was less than a billion years old, an epoch when the previously-neutral intergalactic medium was reionized. The continuing discovery of galaxies at progressively higher and higher redshifts has been driven by the availability of large telescopes on the ground and in space, improvements in detector technology, and new search strategies. Over the past 4 years, the Lyman break technique has been shown to be effective in isolating z~6 star-forming i'-drop galaxies through spectroscopic confirmation with large ground-based telescopes (Keck, Gemini and the ESO VLTs). Narrow-band imaging, notably with the wide field of the Subaru telescope, has also produced samples of Lyman-alpha emitters at these redshifts. A The discovery of this i'-drop galaxy population has been used to infer the global star formation rate density at this epoch (z~6), and we are now beginning to constrain the contribution to reionization of the UV flux from these galaxies. Infrared data from the Spitzer Space Telescope has been used to determine the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) from the rest-frame UV to the optical, and constrain the previous star formation histories, masses and ages. The indications are that much of the stellar mass of these galaxies might have formed in vigorous bursts at z>6. The next big advances would be to test the population synthesis modelling of these z~6 galaxies through spectroscopy of the rest-frame optical (rather than crude broad-band SEDs), and also to push the observational horizon for galaxies further to directly explore star formation during the reionization epoch. The UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Large Area Survey (LAS) has the necessary combination of filters (Y, J, H and K), depth (Y <~ 20.2) and area coverage (~4000 deg^2) to detect several redshift z >~ 6.4 quasars. The Third Data Release (DR3) included ~1000 deg^2 of LAS observations which have so far yielded two previously known z ~= 6 quasars and two new discoveries: ULAS J0203+0012, at z = 5.72; and ULAS J1319+0950, at z = 6.13., Comment: to appear in Proceedings of the XXth Moriond Meeting: Cosmology, J. An accurate method to measure the abundance of high-redshift galaxies consists in the observation of absorbers along the line of sight toward a background quasar. Here, we present abundance measurements of 13 z>3 sub-Damped Lyman-alpha Systems (quasar absorbers with HI column density 19 < log N(HI) < 20.3 cm^-2) based on the high resolution observations with VLT UVES spectrograph. These observations more than double the metallicity information for sub-DLAs previously available at z>3. This new data, combined with other sub-DLA measurements from the literature, confirm the stronger metallicity redshift evolution than for the classical Damped Lyman-alpha absorbers. Besides, these observations are used to compute for the first time the fraction of gas ionised from photo-ionisation modelling in a sample of sub-DLAs. Based on these results, we calculate that sub-DLAs contribute no more than 6% of the expected amount of metals at z~2.5. We therefore conclude that even if sub-DLAs are found to be more metal-rich than classical DLAs, they are insufficient to close the so-called ``missing metals problem''., Comment: 30 figures, 24 tables. We determine the abundance of i'-band drop-outs in the HST/ACS GOODS surveys and the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (UDF). The majority of these sources are likely to be z~6 galaxies whose flux decrement arises from Lyman-alpha absorption. We have shown with Keck/DEIMOS spectroscopy that this technique does indeed select high redshift galaxies, and we discovered Lyman-alpha emission for about a third of the galaxies with z'_AB<25.6 The increased depth of UDF enables us to reach a ~10sigma limiting magnitude of z'_AB=28.5 (equivalent to 1.5M_sun/yr at z=6.1, or 0.1L*_UV for the z~3 U-drop population). The star formation rate at z~6 was approximately x6 LESS than at z~3. This declining comoving star formation rate poses an interesting challenge for models which suggest that L_UV>0.1L* star forming galaxies at z~6 reionized the universe. The short-fall in ionizing photons might be alleviated by galaxies fainter than our limit, or a radically different IMF. Alternatively, the bulk of reionization might have occurred at z>>6. We have recently discovered evidence of an early epoch of star formation in some of the i'-drops at z~6. Spitzer images with IRAC at 3.6-4.5microns show evidence of the age-sensitive Balmer/4000Ang break, dominated by stars older than 100Myr (and most probably 400Myr old). This pushes the formation epoch for these galaxies to z_form=7.5-13.5. There are at least some galaxies already assembled with stellar masses ~3x10^10M_sun (equivalent to 0.2M* today) within the first billion years. Absorbers seen in the spectrum of background quasars are a unique tool to select HI-rich galaxies at all redshifts. In turns, these allow to determine the cosmological evolution of the HI gas, Omega_HI+HeII, a possible indicator of gas consumption as star formation proceeds. The Damped Lyman-alpha systems (DLAs with N(HI) > 10^20.3 cm^-2), in particular, are believed to contain a large fraction of the HI gas but there are also indications that lower column density systems, named ``sub-Damped Lyman-alpha'' systems play a role at high-redshift. Here we present the discovery of high-redshift sub-DLAs based on 17 z>4 quasar spectra observed with the Ultraviolet-Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) on VLT. This sample is composed of 21 new sub-DLAs which, together with another 10 systems from previous ESO archive studies, make up a homogeneous sample. The redshift evolution of the number density of several classes of absorbers is derived and shows that all systems seem to be evolving in the redshift range from z=5 to z~3. This is further used to estimate the redshift evolution of the characteristic radius of these classes of absorbers assuming a Holmberg relation and one unique underlying parent population. DLAs are found to have R_* ~ 20 h_100^-1 kpc, while sub-DLAs have R_* ~ 40 h_100^-1 kpc. The redshift evolution of the column density distribution, f(N,z), down to N(HI) = 10^19 cm^-2 is also presented. A departure from a power law due to a flattening of f(N,z) in the sub-DLA regime is present in the data. f(N,z) is further used to determine the HI gas mass contained in sub-DLAs at z>2. The complete sample shows that sub-DLAs are important at all redshifts from z=5 to z=2. DAzLE is an near infrared narrowband differential imager being built by the Institute of Astronomy, Cambridge, in collaboration with the Anglo-Australian observatory. It is a special purpose instrument designed with a sole aim; the detection of redshifted Lyman-alpha emission from star forming galaxies at z>7. DAzLE will use pairs of high resolution (R=1000) narrowband filters to exploit low background `windows' in the near infrared sky emission spectrum. This will enable it to reach sensitivities of ~2E-21 W/m^2, thereby allowing the detection of z>7 galaxies with star formation rates as low as a few solar masses per year. The design of the instrument, and in particular the crucial narrowband filters, are presented. The predicted performance of DAzLE, including the sensitivity, volume coverage and expected number counts, is discussed. The Cambridge Infra-red Panoramic Survey Spectrograph (CIRPASS) is described. This near-infrared (NIR) spectrograph has been used on the 8m Gemini-South Telescope, the 3.9m Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT) and the 4.2m William Herschel Telescope (WHT). Its performance in both integral field mode and multi-object mode is discussed and some scientific highlights are presented. We present a deep XMM-Newton observation of the z=6.30 QSO SDSS J1030+0524, the second most distant quasar currently known. The data contain sufficient counts for spectral analysis, demonstrating the ability of XMM-Newton to measure X-ray spectral shapes of z~6 QSOs with integration times >100ks. The X-ray spectrum is well fit by a power law with index Gamma=2.12 +/- 0.11, an optical-X-ray spectral slope of a_{ox}=-1.80, and no absorption excess to the Galactic value, though our data are also consistent with a power law index in the range 2.02 < Gamma < 2.5 and excess absorption in the range 0 < N_H(cm^-2) < 8x10^22. There is also a possible detection (2 sigma) of FeKa emission. The X-ray properties of this QSO are, overall, similar to those of lower-redshift radio-quiet QSOs. This is consistent with the statement that the X-ray properties of radio-quiet QSOs show no evolution over 0

We report on submillimetre observations of three high redshift (z>6) quasars, made using the SCUBA camera on the JCMT. Only one of the sample was detected at 850um-- SDSS J1148+5251 (z=6.43). It was also detected (>3 sigma significance) at 450um, one of the few z>4 quasars for which this is the case. In combination with existing millimetric data, the submm detections allow us to place limits on the temperature of the submm-emitting dust, hence on the mass of dust to be synthesized under the time constraint imposed by the quasar's redshift., Comment: 5 pages, MNRAS, in press

We analyse near-infrared HST/NICMOS F110W (J) and F160W (H) band photometry of a sample of 27 i'-drop candidate z~6 galaxies in the central region of the HST/ACS Ultra Deep Field (HUDF). The infrared colours of the 20 objects not affected by near neighbours are consistent with a high redshift interpretation. This suggests that the low redshift contamination of this i'-drop sample is smaller than that observed at brighter magnitudes where values of 10-40% have been reported. The J-H colours are consistent with a slope flat in f_nu (f_lam \propto lam^{-2}), as would be expected for an unreddened starburst. There is, however, evidence for a marginally bluer spectral slope (f_lam propto lam^{-2.2) which is perhaps indicative of an extremely young starburst (~10 Myr old) or a top heavy initial mass function and little dust. The low levels of contamination, median photometric redshift of z~6.0 and blue spectral slope, inferred using the near-infrared data, supports the validity of the assumptions in our earlier work in estimating the star formation rates and, that the majority of the i-drop candidates galaxies lie at z~6., Comment: Replaced to match accepted version

Hard X-ray surveys have uncovered a large population of heavily obscured AGN. They also reveal a population of quasars with moderate obscuration at both visible and X-ray wavelengths. We use Chandra selected samples of quasars from the ELAIS Deep X-ray Survey (EDXS) and CDF-N to investigate the obscuration towards the nuclei of moderately obscured AGN. We find an inverse correlation between the optical to X-ray flux ratio and the X-ray hardness ratio which can be interpreted as due to obscuration at visible and X-ray wavelengths. We present detailed optical and near-infrared data for a sample of optically-faint (R>23) quasars from the EDXS. These are used to constrain the amount of rest-frame UV/optical reddening towards these quasars. It is found that optically-faint quasars are mostly faint due to obscuration, not because they are intrinsically weak. After correcting for reddening, the optical magnitudes of most of these quasars are similar to the brighter quasars at these X-ray fluxes. Combining with gas column densities inferred from the X-ray observations we consider the gas-to-dust ratios of the obscuring matter. We find that the quasars generally have higher gas-to-dust absorption than that seen in the Milky Way - similar to what has been found for nearby Seyfert galaxies. We consider the possible existence of a large population of X-ray sources which have optical properties of Type 1 (unobscured) quasars, but X-ray properties of Type 2 (obscured) quasars.
